In-text Citations

When you reference another source use an  in-text citation  in the body of your paper.

Basic Format: (Author's Last Name(s) or Organization, Year).

I'm using...

Summarizing or Paraphrasing

Paraphrasing or summarizing the main findings or takeaways from a research article is the preferred method of citing sources in an APA paper. Always include the last name of the author(s) and the year of the article, so your reader can find the full citation in the reference list.

According to Shavers (2007), limitations of studying socioeconomic status in research on health disparities include difficulties in collecting data on socioeconomic status and the complications of classifying women, children, and employment status.
Direct Quotes  If you're quoting the exact words of someone else, introduce the quote with an in-text citation in parentheses. Any sentence punctuation goes after the closing parenthesis. According to Brown (2019), "Direct quote" (p. 1021). Brown (2019) found that "Direct quote" (p. 1021). [Some other introduction] "Direct quote" (Brown, 2019, p. 1021).   If you're directly quoting more than 40 words, use a  blockquote . Block quotes don't need quotation marks. Instead, indent the text 1/2" as a visual cue that you are citing. The in-text citation in parentheses goes after the punctuation of the quote. Shavers (2007) study found the following: While research studies have established that socioeconomic status influences disease incidence, severity and access to healthcare, there has been relatively less study of the specific manner in which low SES influences receipt of quality care and consequent morbidity and mortality among patients with similar disease characteristics, particularly among those who have gained access to the healthcare system. (p. 1021)
Use direct quotes sparingly! Focus on summarizing the findings from multiple research studies. In the sciences and social sciences, only use the exact phrasing or argument of an individual when necessary.
I'm citing a work with... 1 Author  You only need the author's last name comma year in parentheses. (Abrams, 2018) 2 Authors  Connect both authors' last names with & (ampersand) comma and the year. (Wegener & Petty, 1994) 3 or More Authors  If there are 3 or more authors use et al., which means "and others," comma and the year. (Harris et al., 2018) Group Authors  First time with an abbreviation: (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2019) Then all subsequent citations: (CDC, 2019)

APA 7 DOI Guidelines

  • It is not necessary to include the words “Retrieved from” or “Accessed from” before a DOI or URL in the Reference List.
  • Although older works use previous DOI formats (e.g., “http:/dx.doi.org/” or “doi:” or “DOI:” before the DOI number), in your reference list, standardize DOIs into the current preferred format for all entries. For example, use https://doi.org/10.1037/a0040251 in your reference list even though that article, published in 2016, presented the number in an older format.
  • Do I use a DOI or URL?

" For works without DOIs from most academic research databases , do not include a URL or database information... Provide the name [and URL] of the database or archive when it publishes original, proprietary works available only in that database or archive...."

Clark databases with proprietary works (provide name of database and URL for database home page):

What Is APA Style?

Apa resources, citing sources in apa style, cite right in apa, microsoft word templates, apa publication manual in the library.

Cover of the APA Manual

  • Each academic discipline has its own rules for citing ideas and words borrowed from other writers and researchers.
  • The Social Sciences use the   American Psychological Association  style rules.
  • The  Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association   contains comprehensive rules and examples for citing.
  • APA 7 Guide

  • How to Create a Hanging Indent in Word
  • How to Create a Hanging Indent in Google Docs
  • How to Cite the DSM-V and DSM-V Entries
  • ZoteroBib Citation Generator

How does citing in APA work?

Step 1: Create a References page

  • Include a reference list at the end of your paper. The list should contain a full citation for each source included among your in-text citations.
  • The references list should begin on a new page at the end of your paper with the word "References" bold and centered at the top of the page.
  • Organize citations alphabetically by the first word. Usually this will be the author's last name, but, if the source has no author, you'll use the title of the source.
  • The information these full citations should include depends on the type of source you're citing - for example, whether it's a book, an encyclopedia entry, or an article in a periodical. You'll find the formulas for the most common source types in our APA 7 Quick Guide . If you're having difficulty identifying the type of source you're using, consult a librarian.

Step 2: Use in-text citations throughout your paper

  • Use an in-text citation to acknowledge that you are quoting or paraphrasing another author's words, ideas or data in the text of your research paper.
  • Add in-text citations in parentheses at the end of the sentence but before the final punctuation (like this).
  • the last name of the author(s)
  • the year of publication
  • the number of the page(s) where you found the information, preceded by the abbreviation p. for a single page or pp. for a range of pages
  • example:  (Rivera, 2019, p. 28)
  • Include the year of publication in parentheses after the author's name and the page number(s) in separate parentheses at the end of the sentence.
  • example:   Rivera (2019) asserts that... (p. 28).
  • Use the title of the source in place of the author's name. Titles of longer works such as books should be italicized. Titles of shorter works, such as a chapter from a book or an article from a magazine or journal should be placed in quotation marks. All titles should appear in standard title case (i.e. capitalize all major words).
  • example:   ("Using Citations," 2019, p. 28)
  • Use the last names of both authors, separated by an ampersand (&)
  • example:   (Rivera & Rodriguez, 2019, p. 28)
  • Use the last name of the first author followed by "et al."
  • example:   (Rivera et al., 2019, p. 28)
  • Use the abbreviation n.d. (for "no date") in place of the year
  • example:  (Rivera, n.d., p. 28).
  • Use the number of the paragraph the information came from preceded by the abbreviation para. in place of the page number
  • example:   (Rivera, 2019, para. 4)

Step 3: Double-check your paper and citation formatting

  • The APA Manual dictates the rules for formatting your in-text citations, References page, and your final research paper.
  • Review the links in the " APA Resources " box on this page to see formatting examples.

  • Take the Quiz: Cite Right in APA Complete this online quiz after watching the video above. A certificate of completion will be emailed to you.

Use APA templates in Word and Google Docs

  • When creating a new Microsoft Word document (or Google Doc), search for "APA" to see APA-style research paper templates.

Checklist for preparing your paper for publication

You can use this list to carry out a final check of your submission before you send it to the journal for review.

Is your manuscript adhere to the minimum standards? (English is recommended; the length of submitted paper is at least 4 pages and no more than 15 pages; use of a tool such as EndNote or Mendeley , for reference management and formatting , and choose APA style)

Is your manuscript written in Jurnal Ekonomi dan Pembangunan format?  At this stage, it is essential that you follow every detail of the Jurnal Ekonomi dan Pembangunan format. Please try to follow the format as closely as possible.

Is your title adequate and is your abstract correctly written? The title of paper is max 10 words, without Acronym or abbreviation. The Abstract (MAX 200 WORDS) should be informative and completely self-explanatory (no citation in abstract) , provide a clear statement of the problem , the proposed approach or solution, and point out major findings and conclusions, or contributions (not necessary).

Authors are suggested to present their articles in the sections structure : Introduction - Literature Review - Research Method - Results and Discussion – Conclusion .

Introduction section: explain the context of the study and state the precise objective. An Introduction should contain the following three parts:

Background: Authors have to make clear what the context is. Ideally, authors should give an idea of the state-of-the art of the field the report is about.

The Problem: If there was no problem, there would be no reason for writing a manuscript, and definitely no reason for reading it. So, please tell readers why they should proceed reading. Experience shows that for this part a few lines are often sufficient.

The Proposed Solution: Now and only now! - authors may outline the contribution of the manuscript. Here authors have to make sure readers point out what are the novel aspects of authors work.

Authors should place the paper in proper context by citing relevant papers. At least, 5 references (recently journal articles) are used in this section.

Method section: the presentation of the experimental methods should be clear and complete in every detail facilitating reproducibility by other scientists.

Results and discussion section: The presentation of results should be simple and straightforward in style. This section report the most important findings, including results of statistical analyses as apropriate and comparisons to other research results. Results given in figures should not be repeated in tables. This is where the author(s) should explain in words what he/she/they discovered in the research. It should be clearly laid out and in a logical sequence. This section should be supported suitable references.

Conclusion section: Summarize sentences the primary outcomes of the study in a paragraph. Are the claims in this section supported by the results, do they seem reasonable? Have the authors indicated how the results relate to expectations and to earlier research? Does the article support or contradict previous theories? Does the conclusion explain how the research has moved the body of scientific knowledge forward?

Language . If an article is poorly written due to grammatical errors, while it may make it more difficult to understand the science.

Please be sure that the manuscript is up to date. It is expected that 10% to 20%  of references are to recent papers.

Is the manuscript clearly written?  Is the article exciting? Does the content flow well from one section to another? Please try to keep your manuscript on the proper level.  It should be easy to understand by well qualified professionals, but at the same time please avoid describing well known facts (use proper references instead). Often manuscripts receive negative reviews because reviewers are not able to understand the manuscript and this is authors' (not reviewers') fault.  Notice, that if reviewers have difficulties, then other readers will face the same problem and there is no reason to publish the manuscript.

Do you have enough references?  We will usually expect a minimum of 10 to 25 references primarily to journal papers, depending on the length of the paper. Citations of textbooks should be used very rarely and citations to web pages should be avoided. All cited papers should be referenced within the text of the manuscript.

Figures and Tables. Relation of Tables or Figures and Text: Because tables and figures supplement the text, all tables and figures should be referenced in the text. Authors also must explain what the reader should look for when using the table or figure. Focus only on the important point the reader should draw from them, and leave the details for the reader to examine on her own. Authors are recommended to provide editable figures and table separately to ease editing process. Figures: a.    All figures appearing in article must be numbered in the order that they appear in the text. b.    Each figure must have a caption fully explaining the content c.    Figure captions are presented as a paragraph starting with the figure number i.e. Figure 1, Figure 2, etc. d.    Figure captions appear below the figure e.    Each figure must be fully cited if taken from another article f.    All figures must be referred to in the body of the article Tables: a.    Material that is tabular in nature must appear in a numbered captioned table. b.    All tables appearing in article must be numbered in the order that they appear in the text. c.    Each table must have a caption fully explaining the content with the table number  i.e. Table 1, Table 2, etc. d.    Each column must have a clear and concise heading. e.    Tables are to be presented with single horizontal line under: the table caption, the column headings and at the end of the table. f.    All tables must be referred to in the body of the article. g.    Each table must be fully cited if taken from another article

Each citation should be written in the order of appearance in the text. Citations and references must sequential

Please be aware that for the final submission of regular paper you will be asked to tailor your paper so the last page is not half empty.

In-Text Citations Basics:

  • APA format uses an author/date format   for in text citations. This means that you are required to include the author's name and the date of publication in your writing.
  • For each in text citation you include in your paper, you also include a full citation in the "Reference List" section of your paper.

Summary and Paraphrase:

When   summarizing or paraphrasing   ideas, you must use the author's last name and the year of publication .  It is suggested that you also include the page number(s):

  • Summary or paraphrase of idea (Jones, 2022) .
  • Summary or paraphrase of idea from a single page (Jones, 2022, p.1) .
  • Summary or paraphrase of idea from multiple pages  (Jones, 2022, pp. 1-2) .

If you use the author's name in your text, you just include a year in parenthesis.

  • According to  Jones (2022) , summary or paraphrase of idea.
  • According to Jones (2022) , summary or paraphrase of idea from specific page (p. 1) .
  • According to Jones (2022) , summary or paraphrase of idea from specific pages (pp. 1-2) .

Direct Quote:

When  directly quoting  another (less than 40 words), you include the author's last name, the year of publication and the page number (required).

  • "Direct quote" (Jones, 2022, p.1) .
  • "Direct quote" (Jones, 2022. pp. 1-3) .
  • According to Jones (2022) , "direct quote" (p.1) .

When Directly quoting for more than 40 words, use a block quote (see: Block Quotes/Extracts )

Two Authors:

If there are two authors for a single source you are citing, include both and use "and" between names within a text, and "&" between names in parenthesis

  • According to Jones and Smith
  • (Jones & Smith, 2022)

Follow all other rules for in-text citations when you paraphrase, summarize or quote directly. (See other tabs in this box.)

More Than Two Authors:

For a work with three or more authors, use the first author listed and " et al. "

  • (Jones et al. , 2022)
  • According to Jones et al. , (2022)...

Multiple works in the same parenthesis:

  • Alphabetize by author and separate each entry with a semi-colon.

Basic Formatting: APA Student Paper

  • Block Quotes/Extracts
  • Reference List
  • Sample Papers
  • Your essay should be typed and double-spaced on standard-sized paper (8.5" x 11"), with 1" margins on all sides.
  • The APA does not require a specific font, but does suggest that you choose a font that is easily readable and widely accessible.
  • While not required, APA does suggest 12pt Times New Roman (or another similar/common font)

Page Header/Running Header (Student Paper)

  • For a student paper, this only includes the page number.
  • To create a page header/running head, insert page numbers flush right.
