From Nigeria to Boston

When you first meet Oluwagbeminiyi Osidipe, you encounter a very vibrant, friendly, and unique personality. Oluwagbeminiyi or Niyi – as she shortened her name for simplicity – was named by her mother, who had a “very personal experience” when she had her, Niyi explained. Niyi is a Yoruba Nigerian transplant who arrived in the U.S. in 2006. As one of the most densely populated (West) African countries, Nigeria derives its name from the river that spans its land. To the South, it borders the Gulf of Guinea to the Atlantic Ocean. Originally colonized by the British, Nigeria gained independence in 1960. Its main ethnic groups are the Hausa, Igbo and Yoruba, who speak English and their own respective languages, while major religions include Islam, Christianity and indigenous beliefs. Niyi shares her story, her views on politics, cultural differences she’s embraced with humor, and what we can learn from each other by expressing curiosity. Her message is simple: travel enriches us through its exposure to new cultures, and enables us to grow.

Today’s Culture with Travel guest post is by Mani Mughal

Sri Lanka looks like a large drop of water, or an avocado slice with a yellowish core (that is the mountainous part of Sri Lanka), and green edges. The region stretches 270 miles in length and is 150 miles wide and is reminiscent of India. However, I find it to be a bit cozier, cleaner and slightly richer (y ou will rarely notice any beggars along the roads).

A month ago, I took a whirlwind trip to Sri Lanka, a place of unbelievable beauty and peacefulness.

Located cozily amidst green mountains, Kandy is a stunning city. The last bastion of the Sinhalese dominion prior to the British took control of the entire island in 1815, the city has been able to sustain much of its culture and traditions and is known as the cultural capital of Sri Lanka. You will discover an interesting mix of the Kandyan style of living, blending in with colonial buildings and roads. The streets are neat, and there is a whiff of freshness in the air–you’ll instantly like the city.

How to get there from Colombo?

Since I am based in Dubai, it’s easy for me to move around. There are three different ways to get to Kandy from Colombo including by train, car & bus. Since the Sri Lankan train is very comfortable and easy to catch, I decided to go by train. Read about my Colombo to Kandy train trip experience here .

Visit to Kandy Lake

This is the place where you should start your Kandy trip. Kandy lake is located in the middle of the city and adds some quietness to the hurly-burly surrounding it. I found interesting bird life, great photo opportunities, and enjoyed walking around experiencing the local atmosphere. 

Visit to the Botanic Garden

After getting back from Kandy lake, I visited the Botanic Garden which features various unique plants but I got caught up photographing animals. I even got very close to a snake. She appeared poisonous, but being in a botanic garden, I felt safe. But, on second thought, a botanic garden is just a forest with a wall around it. I Googled the snake, and discovered it was not even a little bit venomous. So, I ended up being safe.

Kandy is famous for its culture. There are so many things you can do in Kandy. 

The Temple of the Tooth Relic

My next stop was the most famous monument of Kandy-Sri Dalada Maligawa (also known as The Temple of the Tooth Relic) located in the Royal Palace complex of Kandy. This World Heritage Site provides the tooth relic of Lord Buddha within a milky white façade with tiled roofs, and is a spectacular site to see.

• Kandyan Cultural Centre

During the  evening, I walked to the Kandyan Cultural Centre to see the famed Kandyan Dance. The show starts on a daily basis at 5:30 PM and keeps going for an hour, demonstrating local tradition.

I recall the entire building was lighted magnificently and stood majestically. Inside, in the main hall, priests were doing the evening prayers as monks sat meditating. All around, there were intricate wood-carved terraces, balconies, and walls decorated with artwork.

As we entered the main chamber, the evening prayers were being offered. Many devotees lined up with offerings of flowers (lotus being the most prominent) among other things.

This was my last stop on my short Kandy trip. After that, I took a train and returned home.

Best Time to Visit Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka is generally warm with the rainy season from May to August. Temperatures can get to 35 °C in June at 75% humidity, and drop to around 16 °C while in the mountains. But, I can hardly name a place where you can encounter that low digits. Typically, November to March is the peak tourist season in Sri Lanka, and prices of hotels are bit higher.

Originally built in 1864 by the colonial British to transport tea from the hills to the capital city, the railway has since become a super affordable way to see the picturesque countryside. Today, the 94-mile train ride is the highlight of any visit to Sri Lanka.

During the last school vacation, I went on a pilgrimage to Kandy, Anuradhapura and some of the ancient cities with my school mates and teachers. On the first day, we went to Kandy to see and worship the Temple of the Tooth Relic, Devadas and Shrines. There we lit Joss sticks, poured coconut oil in to the oil lamps, offered flowers and worshipped. Then we watched the Thevawa Ceremony and listen to an Anusasana delivered by a member of the Sangha. After around 1 p.m. we had our lunch. And walked towards the lake. We had a quiet evening. We spent that night in the pilgrims rest.

On the second day we reached Anuradhapura. First, we worshipped the sacred "Bo Tree" Jaya Sri Maha Bodhiya. Then we went to see the Ruwanvaliya, the Maha Stupa. On the way we saw a lot of sacred places and were fortunate to visit and worship eight other places called Atamasthana. Thereafter we went to Polonnaruwa. On our way we visited Dambulla where we saw the beautiful Rock Temple, Dambulla Viharaya.

Afterwards we went to Sigiriya. When we climbed up the stairs to Sigiriya, we saw the world-famous wonderful entrance which is called the " lion's mouth " which had been made in that shape.

In Polonnaruwa we visited many sacred places. We saw many large tanks which were built by ancient kings. We spent that night in an inn at Polonnaruwa.

The following day we come to Badulla. We saw the glamorous Dunhinda waterfall. After seeing the waterfall, we came to Muththiyangana Mahaviharaya. At least we came to Colombo at 7.30 p.m.

We were so happy and I will never forget our pilgrimage. If I get another chance to visit those places, I will never miss it.

Kandy in Sri Lanka: The Ultimate Travel Guide

Kandy, the last royal capital of ancient Sri Lanka, is a beautiful city nestled in the hills of the country’s central province. These are the same hills where The Second Jungle Book: Mowgli and Baloo, was shot. 

Known for its rich heritage, stunning natural beauty and iconic landmarks, Kandy is a must-visit destination for anyone traveling to Sri Lanka.

Kandy really gives you a glimpse into what life in Sri Lanka is really like. It’s definitely a place less traveled, which makes it an even better destination to visit.

In this guide, you will get some ideas and recommendations on how to spend your time in Kandy, Sri Lanka. Read on to find out the best that this vibrant Sri Lankan city has to offer.

How many days in Kandy in Sri Lanka?

I would suggest spending 2 to 3 days in Kandy during your travels in Sri Lanka. In this way, you will be able to have enough time to explore what Kandy has to offer.

How to get to Kandy?

The main airport of Sri Lanka, called Bandaranaike International Airport in Colombo, is around 100 kms away from Kandy. However, there are several ways to get to Kandy: 

One of the most popular ways to reach Kandy is by train. The city is connected to major cities such as Colombo, Galle, and beautiful Ella by a scenic train route that passes through the lush green hills and tea plantations of Sri Lanka’s central highlands.

You can book train tickets online or at the train station, but it’s recommended to book in advance as trains can get crowded during peak season. 

Kandy is also well-connected by road, with frequent bus services available from major cities such as Colombo, Galle, and Matara. 

you can also get a taxi to Kandy from your previous destination. Personally, we got a private taxi from the underrated city of Negombo which took us 3 hours and cost us 10600 Sri Lankan Rupees in total (around 28-29 euros).

We used the taxi app Pickme for this (which is like a version of Uber in Sri Lanka). I highly recommend using this app, as it makes getting a ride a lot easier and hassle-free.

Where to stay in Kandy?

There are many things to do in Kandy, Sri Lanka. To get the most out of your time in Kandy, I recommend visiting the following places: 

Visit the Sacred Tooth Temple

The Sacred Tooth Temple, also known as Sri Dalada Maligawa, is a must-visit while you’re in Kandy! The area is really beautiful and I would highly recommend going here.

The temple is believed to house the relic of the tooth of the Buddha, which is considered to be one of the most sacred objects in Buddhism. 

Do keep the following mind: if someone inside of the temple suddenly starts talking to you and gives you information about the temple itself, you’ll be expected to pay them at the end. 

Wander around Peradeniya University

Established in 1942, Peradeniya University is one of the oldest universities in Sri Lanka and is considered to be a leading institution of higher education in the country.

The campus is spread across a beautiful and lush green landscape, covering an area of over 700 hectares. 

Walk around the Royal Botanical Gardens

Another great place to visit in Kandy are the Royal Botanical Gardens. They are located 5.5 kms away from the city centre of Kandy.

These beautiful gardens are actually situated very nearby Peradeniya University, so you could easily combine a visit to the two.

It’s lovely to have a walk here for a couple of hours. At the time of writing, an entrance ticket to the Royal Botanical Gardens as a foreigner costs 1500 Sri Lankan Rupees. 

Shop at Kandy Municipality Central Market

If you don’t mind a little chaos, head over to the Kandy Municipality Central Market. This is a local market where you can buy fresh products, spices, clothes, shawls, teas and much more. This place is ideal if you’re looking to buy some souvenirs.

However, don’t expect this place to be the cleanest, do expect a more authentic and local experience. 

Walk around Kandy Lake

Kandy Lake is definitely one of the highlights of your trip to Kandy. It’s a beautiful lake located in the heart of the city. The lake is also known as Kiri Muhuda or the Sea of Milk and was built in 1807 by King Sri Wickrama Rajasinghe.

It’s situated nearby the Sacred Tooth Temple, which makes it ideal to go for a stroll along the lake after you’ve visited the temple. You can also go on a short boat trip around the lake.

Where to eat and drink in Kandy, Sri Lanka?

There are lots of places to eat and drink in Kandy. A couple of places which I highly recommend visiting in Kandy, are: 

Mandiya: for authentic Sri Lankan cuisine

For authentic Sri Lankan cuisine in a cosy setting, definitely head over to Mandiya. This place is owned by a brother and sister and they make really delicious food at very affordable prices. I would highly recommend visiting this small restaurant during your stay in Kandy.

Slightly Chilled: for a great view of Kandy

I would especially recommend visiting Slightly Chilled if you’re into having a nice view of Kandy. This rooftop bar is a good place to hang out for a couple of drinks after exploring Kandy. Besides, they offer a range of cuisines here. 

Balaji Dosai: for delicious vegetarian / Indian meals

Hideout Lounge: for a laid-back atmosphere

The Hideout Lounge is definitely one of my favorite places in Kandy. It really offers a place to relax amidst the busy streets of Kandy.

In conclusion

Kandy is a must-visit destination during your travels in Sri Lanka. It’s a city known for its rich cultural heritage, Sacred Tooth Temple and its serene Kandy Lake.

Wander through its Royal Botanical Gardens and visit the Peradeniya University to see a different side of Kandy. Also explore its authentic cuisine and shop at its local market.

Kandy looks lovely, so lush and green! I love visiting this kind of area where you get a better feel for the local way of life.

The only part that would be a bit annoying is the guide at Sacred Tooth Temple demanding money. It does sound a bit like a scam! I would find it pretty odd if someone affiliated with the temple behaved in that way!

i haven’t been to Sri Lanka but I have heard it is a very interesting and beautiful place to visit. Thanks for all the first-hand advice, it will definitely help everyone with Sri Lanka on their radar.

A trip to Kandy

We reached Kegalle at about 8.30 a.m. First, we went to the Elephant orphanage in Pinnawala. We had our breakfast there. At Pinnawela we saw baby elephants bathing and playing in the river. There was a caretaker for them. Baby elephants were fed with fresh milk from a bottle.

Then we reached Kandy and visited the Sacred Dalada Maligawa. It is a historical place of worship for Buddhists. The Sacred Tooth Relic of Lord Buddha is kept there. We saw the massive Polgolla dam which irrigates the paddy crops in the Kandy district.

From there we reached the Botanical Gardens. As we entered we saw a large board for visitors which read, “DO NOT LITTER, DO NOT TOUCH.” We walked on the gravel path and not on the grass. We saw many varieties of flowers in different colours and shapes.

The caretakers were busy with their work – watering, weeding, fertilizing and pruning the bushes. There was a big playground where we played. We had our lunch there and returned in the evening.

Visit Kandy, Sri Lanka: Your Travel Guide

From the west coast of Sri Lanka, we headed inland to Kandy, the second-largest city in the country, and the gateway to the hills. We had spent 4 days in Colombo, the financial capital; and Kandy, the historic and cultural capital of Sri Lanka, was next on our agenda.

What I found most interesting about Kandy is that due to its geographic advantage and difficult terrain, the erstwhile Kingdom of Kandy was able to fight off Portuguese and Dutch advancements for centuries after the rest of the country succumbed to foreign rule. It was the last standing bastion of then-independent Ceylon, which is why it is the area that is richest in art, history, and culture. While Kandy has become synonymous with its #1 attraction – the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, it also has colonial architecture, beautiful gardens, and the serene Kandy Lake for those who have the time to see them.

Getting to Kandy

Colombo is the only point of entry to the country, and from here, you can travel to Kandy by train, a/c bus, or by taxi. Kandy does not have an airport and the city is located 84 km away from the nearest one. A cab would charge you around LKR 22,000. If you love road trips as much as I do, you can book a self-drive car and make the 2.5-hour (70 km) journey at your own pace. The roads are simply beautiful and the scenery along the way will keep you in good spirits. We couldn’t help but comment on how the drive felt like therapy, thanks to the endless stretches of greenery, the blue skies, and the warm sunshine. I rented a car from ShineAway Cars.

Where to stay in Kandy

Being a city, Kandy has plenty of accommodation options for all budgets. We stayed 45 minutes outside the city in the idyllic village of Gurudeniya, so in terms of sightseeing and convenience, it was quite out of the way, but if you’re looking for peace and relaxation, read on.

My experience at our hotel, Jetwing Kandy Gallery enhanced my trip to Kandy tenfold. This luxury hotel is located on the banks of the Mahawelli Ganga River, the perfect place to come back to after exploring the marvels of the city. Having just 26 rooms and suites, the hotel manages to offer each room its personal butler – taking personalized service to the next level. A gorgeous pool, large balcony, peaceful location, great spa, and amenities make it one of the best choices in these parts.

I was floored when I saw my stunning room at Jetwing Kandy Gallery. Shrouded in greenery and overlooking the Mahawelli Ganga River, the longest river in Sri Lanka, the rooms are inviting and plush – a true sanctuary. My favourite experiences were breakfast by the pool and river, an evening swim, and a fabulous spa sesh to wind down after a long day of workcationing. The traditional song sung by the staff, the lighting of the lamp ceremony, and the local sweets we received upon arrival made this gorgeous luxury hotel feel so welcoming. The staff is absolutely wonderful – did I mention every room has a personal butler? Ours was the lovely Kivindi, who was always a call away.

An offbeat activity we did in Kandy was to do a short walking tour in the village, led by the naturalist at Jetwing Kandy Gallery. It was on the walk that we were shown an ancient statue of the sleeping Buddha under a tree. Just behind it is a stupa and caves with ancient carvings that date back to 2 BC. While the caves have been ravaged by treasure hunters and the head of the Buddha statue was likely washed away by the river, it is a fascinating place for those who like archeology and have an interest in historical findings. Things to do in Kandy

The hotel staff at Jetwing Kandy Gallery happened to mention in conversation that there wasn’t much to do in Kandy apart from the 2-3 attractions in the city, and after experiencing the place and actively looking for offbeat things to do, I would agree. Kandy, they said, is often a stopover on the drive between Colombo and Nuwara Eliya – a more attractive destination, according to locals. And hence, if you aren’t a slow traveler or don’t have to work alongside your travel, one day in Kandy would suffice to see the major sights. If you do like to slow down and really soak in a new place or are working remotely like I was, then two days in Kandy are ideal.

Visit The Temple of The Tooth

It is said that Buddha’s tooth was snatched from the flames of his funeral pyre way back in 483 BC. It was smuggled to Sri Lanka by Princess Hemmamali, who hid it in her hair. The tooth was moved and hidden for many years before finally settling in Kandy, where no expense is spared to protect it at the Temple of the Tooth. It is enclosed inside several gold boxes covered in jewels and has been worshipped ever since. Over the years, the tooth grew in importance and was a symbol of sovereignty. Whoever had custody of the tooth had the right to rule the island. Sri Lankan Buddhists pay at least one visit here during their lifetime, and all of this makes this little tooth mighty impressive.

If you’re wearing off-shoulder tees, barebacked and sleeveless dresses, shorts, mini-skirts, see-through clothing, and distressed jeans you won’t be allowed to enter. Fortunately, at the entrance of the temple, you will find vendors selling sarongs, and for a price of LKR 300, you can rent one to wrap around your legs or upper body. It is also worth noting that most locals wear white at the temple, and while it is not mandatory to do so, if you want to blend in and look like a local to avoid tour guides zeroing in on you, you could do the same.

Speaking of tour guides, you don’t need to look out for one if you need one. They will find you. Conveniently for them, there are no signs leading foreigners to the designated counters from where they should buy a ticket (at LKR 1500 each ). Most foreigners simply follow the crowd until they reach the counters meant for Sri Lankans to keep their footwear, and that’s when a guide will ‘helpfully’ show you to the counters meant for foreigners.

For us, it was 11 AM when our self-appointed guide took us to the counter meant for foreigners and according to him, the chamber where the tooth is kept open for public viewing closes at 11:15. He hastily ushered us in at top speed so we could get a glimpse of the chamber before it closed, and then proceeded to show us where to place our flower offerings, where we could and could not take pictures, all the rooms we could visit and the significance of what we were seeing. And that was that – he’d got his customer for the day. Although I must say, the temple was extremely crowded and the points of interest are all over the place. He helped us get out of there in 30 minutes flat while showing us the shortcuts and making our way through the crowd by speaking the local language, Sinhalese. We would have probably taken 2 hours in there, just finding our way and being pushed around by the crowds.

Overall, this was definitely a beautiful experience and I was blown away by the ornate carvings and colorful depictions of Buddha. I was also very intrigued by the room full of gifts and gold (that we weren’t allowed to see, but it sounded like something out of an adventure novel). Keep in mind, you can’t actually see the tooth – it’s locked inside a box and held behind glass.

P.S. During our trip to Kandy, we only visited the Temple of the Tooth and no other attractions simply because they were not of interest to us or we found them to be too expensive for the experience. The information listed below may help you plan your itinerary but is not from personal experience.

Spend a few hours at the Royal Botanical Garden

We made our way to the Royal Botanical Gardens and found out that the entry fee was quite steep at LKR 2000 per head (foreigner price), and decided to leave without seeing it. This sprawling park is said to be ultra grand as it was made for Kandyan royals to saunter through. It is spread over 60 hectares and holds 10,000 trees. You’ll find orchids, spice plants, Insta-worthy palm trees, and more. Plan to spend at least 3 hours to see it all. If I’m ever in Kandy again (and I suspect I will be when I pass through to go to Nuwara Eliya on a future trip), I may decide to check it out. After all, I’ve already seen the Temple… so why not?

Kandy to Ella Train Ride

The Kandy to Ella Train Ride is said to be among the most picturesque train journeys in the world. You’ve probably seen photos of people posing while hanging out of the train doors over the tea plantations. I really wanted to get on that epic journey and get a photo like that, but tickets have to be booked way in advance, and we didn’t do it in time. Secondly, we had the self-drive car that we’d picked up from Colombo, so making the 6-hour train journey to Ella meant we would have to figure out what to do with the car and how to transport it to our next destination. After days of deliberation, we decided to give that a pass, too. I did spot the train at Ella though!

Stroll around Kandy Lake

One of the things you can do if you have time to spare is spend a bit of time at the picturesque Kandy Lake. Entry is free and a walk around the 3 km circumference of the lake would take you an hour – a good way to get your step count up. The lake is a backdrop to the Temple of the Tooth Relic as well as the Udawattakele Forest Reserve, so it’s safe to say that you’ll spot plenty of wildlife around.

Other Things to Do

If you’re in the mood to visit more temples, the Gadaladeniya Viharaya, Embekke, and Lankathilaka called the ‘three temple loop’, is said to serve as a living history of Sri Lanka’s Buddhist heritage and craftsmanship. Many people recommend visiting the Elephant Orphanage, but I’d advise against it. Similar to the elephant sanctuary I visited in Coorg where one is led to believe that elephants are taken care of (partly true), they are used more as a form of entertainment and for tourists’ dollars.

Sigiriya, known as the eighth wonder of the world is a 3-hour drive from Kandy, and the Bahiravokanda Vihara Buddha Statue, the biggest Buddha statue in Sri Lanka is also a short drive away. If you would like to see all of these things as well, budget for 2 more days in Kandy.

That pretty much wraps up my visit to Kandy. Among all the places I visited, I feel like I have the least to write about Kandy. Hi Bernadette! 5 days should be good to visit 1-2 places located in close proximity to each other. If you like beaches, head south to Galle, Mirissa, Weligama. Or if you’re more of a nature-person, then Kandy and Ella. I found Sri Lanka to be super safe with several transport options (Uber, trains, local rickshaws) so you don’t have to worry about getting around. All these places I mentioned are touristy and you’re just one in the crowd – so as long as you dress modestly, you wont draw any attention. There’s always people around even at night – although if you can avoid going out alone at night, that would be better.

7 Places to See and Best Things to do in the Sacred City of Kandy

Sacred City of Kandy is one of the 8 UNESCO world heritage sites in Sri Lanka. We will start the journey here where, one of the important pilgrimage for Buddhism in Sri Lanka, is located. The Sacred City of Kandy is situated just at the foothills of Udawatta Kele Forest Reserve.

Marvel at the Old Royal Palace Complex of Kandy

The Royal Palace of Kandy, located right next to the Sacred Tooth Relic Temple, was the official residence of all the Kandyan kings till British colonized Sri Lanka in 1815.

The palace complex includes several buildings, courtyards, and gardens, all of which are adorned with intricate carvings and murals. The palace is also home to a museum that showcases artifacts and exhibits related to the history and culture of the Kandyan kingdom. Visit Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, Sri Dalada Maligawa

Sri Dalada Maligawa or the Tooth Relic Temple is the Sacred temple in which the tooth relic which was brought to Sri Lanka under mysterious and adventurous circumstances. It is said when Buddha attained samadhi or parinirvana, almost 2000 pieces of his skeleton were collected and later distributed to various Buddhist monasteries for worshiping. It is said that this particular tooth relic was in the safe-keeping of the successive Kalinga rulers until about 4th century CE. Kalinga was under siege and the tooth relic was secretly smuggled into Sri Lanka by the then princess, named Hemamala, who hid it in her hair during her difficult and risky passage from Odisha to Sri Lanka.

The relic then became the sign of monarchy. Whoever possessed it, was the king! The relic has had many viharas as its homes. First Anuradhapura, then Polonnaruwa, other places, and finally Kandy when it became the capital. The then king of Kandy built this famous temple, with a moat and an octagonal gallery and consecrated the tooth relic, kept in a golden casket, with great pomp and show.

Thrice everyday, the casket is taken out for worshiping and, what a sight it was! The Kandyan drummers slowly start beating the Kandyan drum (hewisi horane wadana) and after some time increase the speed and soon it borders on frenetic crescendo. In fact our hearts beat at the same frequency! About that time the solid doors, which are framed by a pair of huge elephant tusks, are opened for the devotees with special permits for their darshan at close quarters, most of whom are wearing white. It is a sight to behold!

Once a year, the golden casket is taken out of the temple during Esala Perahera festival, and paraded around the temple complex on caparisoned temple elephant. It is also called Sri Dalada Perahara or the festival of the sacred tooth.

Visit Sri Kataragama Devalaya Temple (Kateragama Dewale)

Kataragama Temple along with Sri Maha Natha Temple, Sri Maha Paththini temple and Sri Vishnu temple form the guardian quartet deities who protect the city of Kandy. So it is normal for devotees to visit these temples also when they visit Sri Dalada Maligawa. Kataragama Dewale is located a bit further away in the commercial area, than the other 3, which are right opposite Dalada Malegawa.

The principle deity of this temple is Kartikeyan or Murugan as he is called in Tamil. The deity here has several head and hands and rides a peacock. This beautiful mix can only be seen in Kandy. Hindu gods are protecting the city of Kandy where, mostly Buddhism is being practiced.

Offer Prayers at the temple Sri Maha Natha Devalaya

Sri Maha Natha Dewale is located in the gated square in front of the Tooth Relic Temple. We were informed that this temple has been in existence since the 14th century, making it older than Tooth Relic Temple by a couple of centuries.

It is now believed that the presiding deity is a form of Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara. People pray here for health and curing of sickness. The Mandapa of Sri Natha Dewale is lined with many shiny carved stone pillars. It is also one of the four deities protecting the city from Mara , the mythical evil form opposing Buddhism.

Opening Times : Open 24 hours on all days however the sanctum sanctorum maybe closed at specific times, coinciding with prayer times of the Tooth Relic Temple.

Visit Sri Maha Pattini Devalaya

The presiding deity of Sri Maha Pattini Devalaya , (temple of the Goddess of Chastity), is the third deity who is the protector of the Sacred City of Kandy. This temple is located in the same premises as Sri Maha Natha Devalaya.

The main deity of this temple is a deified common Tamil woman during the first few centuries of the Common Era. It is based on the Tamil literary masterpiece, Silappadikaram (the story of the anklet). It is a long story but the essence is the poor husband of this woman, Kannagi, was trying to sell one of the anklets of his wife at the market where he is accused of stealing the queen’s anklet and executed by the Pandyan King, without following the due process of justice.

When Kannagi finds out about this mishap, she is furious beyond words, goes to the king, breaks the anklet and shows that it contained less precious stones, where as the Queen’s anklet had pearls. King realizes his mistake but nothing could be done. Kannagi then throws the anklet at the king cursing him that he will die soon and also curses the people of Madurai, the capital of Pandyan Kingdom, that their city will be destroyed.

Madurai starts to burn and the king contracts a dangerous disease and dies (alternately it is said he was so ashamed that he committed suicide). After this episode Kannagi goes to Chera Kingdom. Where the Gods above, who were observing all this, calms her down and escorts her to the heaven and people build a temple and start to worship her.

Pattini (paththini) means a wife or a chaste woman in Tamil (and many other Indian languages).

Pray at Sri Maha Vishnu Devalaya

Maha Vishnu is the fourth deity who forms the quartet protecting the city of Kandy.

The temple building looks quite ordinary with a corridor around the building. We are told that the insides are quite ornate, much different than the unassuming structure. We could visit this for want of time.

This museum is located just next to the Sacred Sri Dalada Maligawa (Tooth Relic Palace).

International Buddhist Museum or Museum of World Buddhism is the first of its kind in the world, set up with the help 17 countries including Sri Lanka and India amongst others. In fact all the countries where Buddhism was being practiced in the ancient times.

The exhibits include rare manuscripts, Palm Leaf writings, Scrolls, other artefacts pertaining to Buddhism. It spans 20 rooms in two floors.

Listen to and Enjoy the Kandyan Cultural Performance

Kandyan cultural performance is a mix of Kandyan dance, different types of Instruments such as conches, drums performing acrobatics and dances sucah as Peacock dance, Demon dance, Tea plucking dance etc. The grand finale is walking on fire!

It is definitely worth a visit if you are interested in cultural shows. It is held at a few places everyday. We went for the one at the YMBA hall (Young Men’s Buddhist Association) at Rajapihilla Mawatha, Kandy, Sri Lanka which is near the lake.

Cool off at the Kandy Lake

Kandy lake is an artificial lake near the Tooth Relic temple built in the early 19th Century CE by the then King Sri Wickrama Rajasinghe. As per the guide, there used to be a paddy field with a pond in the middle named Kiri Muhuda meaning , Sea of Milk. The lake carries the same name even now.

There is a 3 KM promenade all around for people to walk and enjoy the cool breeze.

Take a Healthy Stroll in the Royal Botanical Gardens, Peradeniya

The Royal Botanical Garden is surrounded by a winding Mahaweli river on 3 sides. In the early decades of the 19th Century a Botanical Garden was created which also was used for cultivating Cinnamon and Coffee.

The Royal Botanical Garden at Peradeniya now is home to 4000 + species plants such as including orchids, spices, medicinal plants, palms, and other tropical plants. It is spread over almost 150 Acres (60 Hectares). One can make use of an electric buggy for additional charge.

There are a few Palm Trees Lined avenues, which are very photogenic. They make a beautiful background for portraits 🙂 There is also an Orchid house in a temperature controlled enclosure with many varieties of Orchids.

This botanical garden is very popular with the local as well as foreign tourists. Peradeniya botanical garden also has a section with trees planted by world leaders.

Another claim to fame is this Garden was used as one of the location for the epic movie The Bridge on the River Kwai.

The Gems Museum and Jewellery Store is a museum and retail outlet that showcases a wide variety of precious and semi-precious gems and minerals not only from the Kandy region but also from whole of Sri Lanka.

There are many Gems Museum and Jewellery Stores and we are given to understand that all follow a similar pattern of display, guides and stores. We visited the Handuni Gems and Jewellery Museum .

Not for nothing, Sri Lanka was (and probably still is) known as Ratna Dweepa meaning Island of Gems! It is said that about 25% of Sri Lanka is gems bearing land! Whew!

Arabs called the island of Sri Lanka as Serendib (Serendip), and recorded in 362 CE about the rubies and sapphires found there. In fact the English word Serendipity ( unexpected fortunate discoveries ), owes its existence to the Arab-Persian word Serendip!

From a documentary on the mining history and process to the craftsmen cutting the gems and making the final product, all aspects are covered. They end the tour at the store where the visitors may purchase jewellery . There is no obligation though.

Shopping in Kandy is a real treat! With its wide selection of Gems, Jewelleries, tea, souvenirs and the enchanting aromas of local spices wafting through the air, it’s no wonder people come from far and wide to explore its offerings! Not to mention, the friendly locals make it a pleasure to bargain for a deal.

For authentic items, we suggest either the manufacturers store or Laksala , the only State owned Gift and Souvenir Shop established under the National Crafts Council. There are Laksala shops in all major cities.

Other places to shop as the locals do are the Central Market, Kandy City Centre and Cargill Food City.

There are umpteen things to do in Kandy region. However we will stick to the most important ones.

Enjoy the Spice Garden

An invigorating bouquet of fragrances wafts across and greets you as you enter the spice garden. This is yet another must visit place.

The spice gardens have live plants and trees of Spices and medicinal plants like turmeric, vanilla, cocoa, cardamom, ginger, nutmeg trees, pepper etc. including, what is Sri Lanka well known for, the Cinnamon and tea. Kandy is famous for its lush greenery, tea plantations, and rich cultural heritage.

We visited Ranweli Spice Garden, a bit far from Kandy, however there are many spice gardens dotting the region. You can have your pick. The employees of any of the many spice gardens will be happy to show you around and let you taste some exotic varieties of tea and probably have a quick head massage! These knowledgeable guides provide interesting insights into the history of each spice, its medicinal properties, and its uses in traditional Sri Lankan cuisine.

There is also a spice store if you are interested in buying spices. I was surprised to see that they were accepting Indian Rupees too as a mode of payment in addition to the usual suspects. Over it was an excellent sensory experience!

Take in the Aroma of Fresh Tea at a Tea Factory!

Like the Spice gardens, there are many tea manufacturers. We went to Geragama Tea Factory .

There is an enriching guided tour where they explain the various types of tea, from Gold, silver to other cheaper varieties. Also when and how to pluck the leaves, sort them, dry , curl and how the enzymatic oxidation takes place.

The mix of aroma from the shop floor and the packing area can leave you wanting to taste them now 🙂

Yes you can do that too on the top floor. The hostesses will courteously serve you small quanitities of various teas. If tea is your thing then there is a shop counter where you can order from the wide choices available.

If you have never been to a tea factory and tea tasting in Sri Lanka, then this is not to be missed.

Explore the three temple circuit at Kandy Sri Lanka

The following three temple located a bit away from the city and lies almost in a straight are more examples of how Buddhism and Hindu thrives here together.

Embekke Devalaya Temple, Kandy

Embekke Devalaya of Kandy is located about 18 KM North of the Sacred City of Kandy. The presiding deity is again Karthikeya, similar to Kataragama Devalaya.

Embekke temple was built by King Vikramabahu III sometime in the latter half of 14th century CE. The temple is divided into 3 parts. The sanctum sanctorum, the Digge or the dancing hall and hewisi drummers hall. The temple looks very ordinary till you enter it.

The temple is made of wood and carries some most intricate carvings on its pillars. As per our guide UNESCO has deemed the cravings on the wooden pillars at Embekke Devale as the finest piece of wood carvings to be found anywhere in the world.

When we went, the sculpture of the god was hidden behind a curtain with an image of Karthikeya as Shanmugam (meaning, one having 6 faces).

This is truly one of the best hidden places of Kandy.

Gadaladeniya Raja Maha Viharaya

Gadaladeniya Raja Maha Viharaya (Temple of the King of Gadaladeniya), as the name suggests, is a Buddhist temple built in the first half of 14th century CE. It has a few features from South Indain Hindu temples and Polonnaruwa style.

The sanctum has a sculpture of Seated Buddha in Dyana Mudra and is about 8 Feet tall.

Sri Lankathilake Raja Maha Viharaya

Sri Lankathilake Raja Maha Viharaya (Temple of the King of Lankathilaka), is also the same period as Gadaladeniya temple and is also a Buddhist Vihara or temple.

This was originally a 4 storeyed building, as per the inscriptions found here. Walls and ceilings have paintings, probably from Kandyan era.

In addition to Buddha, there are 6 hindu shrines around dedicated to Ganesha, Karthikeya, Vibhishana amongst others.

How to reach Kandy, Sri Lanka?

By Road: Kandy is about 113 KM from Colombo Airport, CMB ( Bandaranaike International Airport ) and can take about 2.5 to 3 Hours. This, as per us, is the most convenient form of transport but is expensive. it could cost about USD 60 or so (LKR 22000).

By Bus: Bus takes about 4 hours and costs LKR 1200 or so. It may require change of buses.

By Train: You are in luck! There are many trains which may take between 2.5 hours to 3.5 hours. The scenic Kandy to Ella, train route actually starts from Colombo Fort Station. The cost ranges between LKR 240 to LKR 1000 (USD 5 only) depending on the train and class of travel. This makes it the cheapest option. You would need to provide for time to reach the station and waiting for the train etc. However I know of people who swear by train travel!

We stayed at the luxurious “Mahaweli Reach” hotel right in the city about 7 KM from the Tooth Relic Temple. It had an old charm about it but it was total modern from inside. The highlight is that it is right on the banks of Mahaweli river.

On the second night we stayed at a Bungalow probably used by Lord Mountbatten on the hills over looking Kandy. It is aptly named the Mountbatten Bungalow. You are literally in the midst of the nature when you stay here. There are a few cottages too a bit away from the main building.

Is one day enough for Kandy

Short answer is no! However if you have only one day then best would be to visit Dalada Maligawa and a few temples nearby, the botanical garden and either the tea factory or the Spice garden or both.

For nature lovers, there are a lot more things to do in and around Kandy, including some great hiking trails.

This post has given me new goals. I wasn’t aware that Buddha’s skeleton pieces were kept in different monasteries. Would certainly like to see the tooth relic. I would certainly like to walk down the palm trees avenue. And you actually saw a snake.

These relics are leftovers after the cremation. The relic itself cannot be seen as they are in a casket within casket. I have seen a tooth relic on live TV feed in Singapore Buddhist temple where the relic televised 24 hours.

I have been to Kandy back in 2019, when I first visited Sri Lanka. I would have loved to see the interior of the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic but my visit there was at the same time as the annual Perehera so I didn’t get a chance to go inside, only to see it from the outside. I remember visiting a spice garden, as well as the botanical garden which was such a nice oasis in the middle of the buzzing city. The Gems Museum was pretty insightful as well, especially the reproduction of the mine inside it.

Perehara time must have been crazy with all the crowd :). I sure would like to visit it during that time for the experience.

I can see why people would visit Kanda in Sri Lanka. We would certainly want to enjoy all the things to see and do in the Sacred City, Kandy city and in the region. The tusks really are amazing in the Tooth Relic Room at Dalada Maligawa. We would certainly plan to attend a cultural performance. Good to know there are different places to see this. Great to include a visit to the Botanical Gardens to relax and take a break. I can see why Kandy is considered the cultural capital of Sri Lanka.

Kandy is also central and you can visit a lot more places within 200 KM radius.

I like that tourists in Kandy can go to worship at the temples, too. I think it’s part of the attraction in the city. Palm Tree Avenue in the Botanical Garden is very beautiful. Everyone must see it. And I think a visit to Tea Factory is a must too. I can imagine the sweet smell of tea inside the factory.

Recently, Thierry and I had the opportunity to meet up in Sri Lanka. “The Pearl of the Indian Ocean” is about halfway between Europe and Australia, and I didn’t want to travel too far at the time. Because it had been a long while since I’d visited a new country, I jumped at this unique chance. Sri Lanka is rightfully described as a gem, with its eight UNESCO World Heritage sites. It is incredibly diverse, with a rich and lively culture. One of the most prominent sites in Sri Lanka is “Dalada Maligawa”, the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic. If you are up for a day of discovering new things and experiencing Buddhist life, here are 7 reasons to visit the Temple of the Tooth in Kandy, Sri Lanka.

A UNESCO World Heritage Site

The Temple of Sacred Tooth Relic is a UNESCO World Heritage Site , one of 8 in Sri Lanka, alongside Sigiriya, Anuradhapura, Galle, Polonnaruwa, the Cave Temple in Dambulla, the Sinharaja Forest and the Central Highlands.

It is a place of great historic, cultural and spiritual significance, a place to visit but also experience. And the gorgeous Sri Lankan wildlife is never far away!

One of the Most Sacred Buddhist Sites in the World

The Temple of the Tooth is one of the most sacred Buddhist sites in the world, and the most visited in Sri Lanka. Sitting within the royal palace complex of the former Kingdom of Kandy, the temple holds the tooth relic of Buddha, which was smuggled from India in the IVth Century CE. The Tooth Relic has played an important role in local politics since ancient times because it is believed that whoever holds the relic holds the governance of the country.

Enshrined in 7 Golden Caskets

The Tooth Relic is enshrined in no less than 7 golden caskets. The shrine opens briefly at certain times of the day, so you may catch a glimpse of it.

Women visit the Relic during pregnancy or with young children.

A Live Experience

My experience of Buddhist sites has mostly been limited to deserted open-air museums in India. When we visited the Temple of the Tooth in Kandy Sri Lanka, we very much felt it was a live experience, with crowds of worshippers making flower offerings, happily moving from one area to another or reflecting quietly. This made the visit really enjoyable. The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic is not just a museum, but a place of pilgrimage for Sri Lankans. Hence, it makes for a very enjoyable and enriching experience.

Our presence as tourists was very well accepted, we could take photos freely, so long as we did it respectfully.

The Design Details

The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic is full of beautiful visual details, in frescoes, moonstones and wooden frames.

The Royal Hall is located near the temple. Its structure is completed without a single nail and offers some beautiful wood carvings.

The Kandy Esala Perahera

If you plan to visit the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic around July or August, don’t miss the Perahera , a parade where the golden casket walks the street on elephant back. A very unique celebration, the festival hosts fire dances and various cultural events, with elephants dressed in unique garments.

Participate in Rituals

There are flower sellers at the entrance, and you can make offerings at the various altars throughout the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic.

Visitors’ Rules

Visiting the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic is a unique experience, which can satisfy many curiosities about architecture, religion, history, culture and spirituality. Whilst you are free to wander at your leisure, there are some simple rules to respect:

You should dress appropriately: cover your shoulders and don’t wear anything too revealing. If you are wearing shorts on the day, you can borrow a sarong onsite.

You shouldn’t wear shoes or headwear in the temple. There is a shoe room, where you can safely leave your belongings at the entrance.

Buddhists wear white when visiting a temple, so I recommend light colours, however, it’s not compulsory.

The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic is a place of worship and not just a museum. While the presence of tourists is completely accepted and photos are fine you need to be respectful.

Don’t have your photo taken with your back to the temple, or any figuration of the Buddha, as it is a sign of disrespect to the divinity.

A Must-See in Sri Lanka

A visit to the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic will leave you with unforgettable memories of Sri Lankan life, Buddhist worship and ancient history. The highlights of my visit were the colours, sounds and smiles I came across. Coming so close to the shrine is a true privilege and it’s been a highlight of my time in Sri Lanka. Of course, there are other things for Kandy sightseeing , such as the nearby Peradeniya Botanical Gardens , visiting a spice garden or a tea factory . Kandy is also a good place to look for local crafts , especially the art of batik .

13 Best One-Day Trips from Kandy

One of the biggest reasons why long-term travelers love staying in Kandy is because they have easy access to other areas of Sri Lanka as well! There are several famous attractions and landmarks just a bus, train, or car ride away from the city.

When creating this list of Kandy day trips, we decided that we would not include places that are more than 4 hours away each way. If there are places you are interested in visiting past the 4-hour threshold, consider taking an overnight trip instead of trying to travel there and back in just one day.

Here we go.. 13 places to visit from Kandy, Sri Lanka:

#1 – Lion’s Rock in Sigiriya

Lion’s Rock is an ancient royal palace dating back to the 5th century. It’s amazing that in a region that is almost completely flat, this palace is at the top of a 200-meter (650-foot) rock. Similar to a lot of other natural wonders, this rock has been a sacred place to the Sri Lankan people for much of history.

Lion’s Rock is the focal point of the Sigiriya Rock Fortress in Sigiriya, Sri Lanka. The town of Sigiriya is roughly two and a half hours from Kandy, and you can even pair a day trip here with a wildlife Safari at Minneriya or Habarana National Park or a visit to Dambulla city.

The entrance fee for Sigiriya is $30/per person, and in order to hike to the top, you will need to climb about 1200 steps. The total climb takes only about an hour roundtrip, and it will have you breathing pretty hard by the end!

At the top, you will find gorgeous views of the valley and the ancient artifacts and ruins that have been preserved all these years.

Best Time To Visit Sigiriya Rock

Sigiriya, along with the neighboring city of Dambulla , is in the driest region of Sri Lanka. This region’s best weather is from January through September.

Be sure to start early because Sigiriya can get VERY HOT later in the day!

#2 – Ramboda Falls

Ramboda Falls is over 109 meters tall (357 feet) and spread across three separate tiers of the Sri Lankan hill country. The waterfalls are located right off of the Kandy to Nuwara Eliya highway. This makes for a very fun Kandy day trip to the falls!

The Ramboda Falls area is 2 hours from Kandy, but they are definitely worth the drive. Each tier of the falls deserves to be explored on its own, and there are a decent amount of restaurants and cafes around the area as well!

The highest tier is the most impressive part of the falls. The hike is about 1 mile (2 kilometers) and easy to reach from the road.

If you take a tour, the guide will show you the best route.

If you rent a motorbike to drive yourself to the trailhead, find the bridge next to the middle tier of the falls. Next to this bridge is a small pull-off where you can park your scooter or tuk-tuk and venture up the falls.

Best Time to Visit Ramboda Falls

To avoid rainfall, try to visit between December and May , but the waterfalls will be the most powerful (and beautiful) in January or February .

A tour to Ramboda Falls is rarely offered on its own as a one-day trip from Kandy. If you want to ONLY visit Ramboda Falls for a day, then rent a scooter and visit the falls on your own.

Most tours either pair Ramboda Falls with Ambuluwawa Tower or a trip to the city of Nuwara Eliya.

#3 – Lookouts from Kandy

There are two famous mountains that are popular tourist lookouts near Kandy. If you are into climbing mountain peaks, then a day trip to one of these lookouts deserves a place on your itinerary!

Peacock Hill (Monaragala)

Peacock hill is the most popular lookout in Kandy. The mountain peak is 4980 feet tall and is located in Pussellawa town. Local people called this mountain; “Monaragala”. The peak got its name because, from certain angles, it looks like a peacock.

There are tourists visiting Peacock Hill every day to enjoy the views and take photos.

This peak is about 1 hour and 20 minutes from the city, so it is an easy day trip from Kandy and can be paired very easily with Ambuluwawa Tower since they are close in proximity.

Kondagala (A less touristy alternative)

Kondagala Mountain is much less touristy than Peacock Hill, but it is even more jaw-droppingly beautiful. It is actually the mountain where James Taylor started the very first tea plantation estate in Sri Lanka. The peak is situated right behind James Taylor Cottage.

Kondagala Mountain peak is a little farther from Kandy than Peacock Hill. It takes about 1 hour and 40 minutes each way to get there, but the views are breathtaking and fewer crowds are always a plus!

Best Time to Visit Kandy’s Mountain View Points

Do your best to check the weather and look for a sunny day. Both mountains are prone to fog in the afternoon/evening. It is best to go in the morning to avoid the heat as well! The worst thing would be to travel all the way there only to have trouble seeing the view from the lookout.

Unfortunately, after a lot of research, it seems like there are very few tours to Kondagala. We could not find one that you can book online, but maybe you can ask around while you are in Kandy. The best way to see the mountain peak is to rent your own transportation or hire a private driver for the day .

#4 – Dambulla Cave Temple & Golden Temple

One of the top attractions in northern Sri Lanka is the Dambulla Cave & Golden Temple.

These neighboring temples are a part of the same complex. They have gained a lot of fame because of their uniqueness and proximity to a lot of the best cities in Sri Lanka (like Kandy).

The Royal Temple is home to one of the largest Buddha statues on the island, and the Cave Temple is built right into the caves on the outskirts of Dambulla.

Dambulla is less than two hours from Kandy, and there are several day trip options from Kandy to Dambulla. Travelers are even able to take an extended one-day trip from Kandy that includes Sigiriya, Pidurangala, or a safari at Minneriya National Park!

It is only a few dollars to get into the temple complex. The entrance fee is usually included with any day tour.

The best season to be in Dambulla is January – September . Try to visit the cave temple in the early morning for cool weather and fewer crowds.

If you are up for a long day trip from Kandy, this guided tour also includes Minneriya National Park and Pidurangala Rock, so it’s a slightly better bang for your buck!

#6 – The ancient capital of Anuradhapura

Anuradhapura is the oldest city in Sri Lanka and has been preserved for over 2000 years. There are massive stupas, intricate moonstones, and other remnants of bathhouses, wells, and other buildings from the first venture B.C.

Another place to visit in Anuradhapura is a mountain peak and temple called Mintahale . A lot of day trips from Kandy will pair this peak with a tour of the ancient city.

This is one of the farthest Kandy day trips on this list. You may want to make this a multi-day trip in order to see everything that Anuradhapura has to offer.

However, if you are short on time, there are tours that leave from Kandy every day to the ruins of Anuradhapura.

The entry fee for Anuradhapura is $25 per person for the whole day.

Best Time to Visit Anuradhapura

January – September are all great months to visit Anuradhapura. Just keep in mind that June and July are the hottest months of the year.

#7 – Ambuluwawa Biodiversity Complex

Ambluwawa Tower is a beautiful multi-religious Biodiversity Complex just outside of Kandy. The tower sits high over Gampola, Sri Lanka–a small town southeast of Kandy–and the tower has been gaining a lot of popularity over the past couple of years!

Sri Lanka built the Ambuluwawa Tower as a way to represent the unity of Sri Lanka, and it was only recently completed in 2009 (the year the civil war officially ended).

Climbing to the top was one of the most exhilarating parts of our time in Kandy.

From Kandy, Ambuluwawa is only 54 minutes by car (slightly longer if you are taking a tuk-tuk). It is very easy to come and go in the morning or afternoon from Kandy.

Best Time to Visit Ambuluwawa Tower

The seasons near Ambuluwawa Tower are similar to Kandy, so you should come and visit the tower between December and April.

It may sound a little counter-intuitive, but we recommend visiting later in the evening. The tower is only open between 8:30 am – 5 pm. Almost everyone goes in the morning, and it can get very crowded. If you go in the evening (around 4:00 pm), then when the complex closes at 5:00, people will filter out, and you will have the park all to yourself for the sunset! (The gates to the complex do not lock until 7:00 pm)

You can take a tour from Kandy to Ambuluwawa Tower , but if you are renting a scooter in Kandy, we recommend just driving yourself.

#8 – Pidurangala Rock

Hiking Pidurangala Rock is, to this day, our most treasured experience from our time in Dambulla & Sigiriya. Watching the sunrise over Sigiriya Rock was absolutely incredible.

If you take a day trip to Sigiriya or Dambulla from Kandy, try to find one that includes a hike up Pidurangala Rock. A sunrise hike is well worth the effort!

The hike itself is not long at all. It is only a little less than a mile and takes about 20-30 minutes to get to the summit. This is definitely a crowded experience, but Pidurangala Rock has a bunch of space at the top to find a secluded area for sunrise.

Best Time to Visit Pidurangala Rock

Pidurangala Rock is very close to the Sigiriya Rock Fortress and follows the same seasonal pattern as the rest of northern Sri Lanka. Travelers will experience mostly dry and hot weather between December and September . Avoid visiting during the short monsoon season in October and November !

Booking a tour to Pidurangala Rock usually includes more than just one hike. There are tours that add Sigiriya Rock, Matale, Minneriya National Park, and other temples/attractions in the area.

If you are only interested in visiting Pidurangala Rock and Sigiriya, this tour would be perfect for you!

However, if you are up for a full day of exploring, this tour includes Pidurangala Rock, Lion’s Rock, Dambulla Cave & Royal Temple, AND a Minneriya National Park Safari.

#9 – Take a National Park Safari

Minneriya National Park / Kaudulla National Park / Habarana National Park:

There are 3 national parks accessible for a day trip from Kandy; Kaudulla National Park, Minneriya National Park, and Habarana National Park.

These three parks are known for having some of the densest elephant populations in Asia! The most popular park of the three is Minneriya National Park. In July, you can experience what Sri Lankans call ‘the gathering.’ This is the time of the year when most of Sri Lanka dries up, so all of the elephants migrate to Minneriya & Kaudulla National Park for food and water.

Best Time to Visit For A Wildlife Safari

If you want to be there for the gathering for the best chance of seeing the most elephants on safari, then come in July/August . That being said, anytime between December and September is a good time to see wildlife in these northern National Parks!

You can visit Sigiriya yourself and book a safari, but there are a lot of day trips from Kandy available as well. Usually, this includes a couple of other stops along the way.

#10 – Take the Train to Ella

There are a lot of different methods for getting around in Sri Lanka, but taking the train is one way everyone should travel through the hill country of Sri Lanka.

The famous train route runs from Kandy to Ella, with the most scenic part of the journey between Haptule and Demadora Station. You can read all about our experience on this train journey here.

In full transparency, taking the train would not necessarily be a ‘day trip.’ However, we added it to the list because if you are many tourists travel south after visiting Kandy to explore the popular mountain town of Ella. This is a great opportunity to take the day to travel between the two cities by train!

The views are incredible, and this experience is on almost every Sri Lankan traveler’s itinerary.

Best Time to Visit Ella

The best weather in the hill country of Sri Lanka is from January to March, but December and April are fine as well. If it does rain, it will be in the afternoon, so to make sure you get all those scenic views, book a train that leaves early in the morning!

You can book train tickets ahead of time on 12go.Asia . It is important to buy a ticket early, as the trains sell out very quickly. If they are sold out, you can always buy a ticket for unreserved seating, but the cars are much less comfortable than the 1st-3rd class reserved seating.

#11 – Adam’s Peak Sunrise Hike (overnight)

Apart from the Temple of the Sacred Tooth in Kandy, the Sri Pada Footprint at the top of Adam’s Peak is the most sacred place in all of Sri Lanka.

Millions of local people make the pilgrimage to the top each year to honor the traditions of their faith. Travelers from around the world also make the pilgrimage to the top both for a cultural experience and to see the best sunrise in Sri Lanka.

The sunrise hike for Adam’s Peak begins before 2:00 am. Therefore overnight trips from Kandy will pick tourists up at their hotel around 10 pm.

The hike is not necessarily an easy hike (at over 5000 steps), but if you are in good shape (and in good spirits), it is certainly something that you should do while in Sri Lanka.

Even though the hike was grueling at times, it was 100% worth the effort! Just make sure you have a day to rest once you return to Kandy.

Best Time to Visit Adam’s Peak

Adam’s Peak is safe to climb between December and April each year. This is considered the ‘pilgrimage season.’ Outside of this window, it is still possible to climb Adam’s Peak but highly discouraged because of rapidly changing weather and poor visibility.

Adam’s Peak is three to four hours from Kandy (depending on traffic). We recommend booking transportation ahead of time to base camp, Nallathaniya .

The hike is actually very well-lit and easy to follow. The tour guide will wait in Nallathaniya , which functions as a ‘base camp’ for Adam’s Peak. When you get to the bottom, the driver will take you back to Kandy, and you can sleep off the long night’s hike!

#12 – Nuwara Eliya (Little England) & Bomburu Ella Waterfall

Nuwara Eliya is the highest city in Sri Lanka! Sri Lankans love coming to Nuwara Eliya to escape the heat of Colombo and other coastal towns around the island. Nuwara Eliya is a nice day trip from Kandy because it has such a different vibe from other parts of Sri Lanka. You can also explore the history of producing and exporting Sri Lanka’s famous tea around the world.

The city of Nuwara Eliya was also the European base during the time of British colonization in Sri Lanka. This is very apparent in all of the colonial-era architecture throughout the town. There are several luxury hotels, restaurants, golf courses, and even a horse track in town!

The reason we were really excited to spend time in Nuwara Eliya was so we could visit the waterfalls surrounding the city . We used Nuwara Eliya as a base to explore several waterfalls, including one of our favorites in all of Sri Lanka; Bomburu Ella.

Best Time to Visit Nuwara Eliya

December to April is a good time to visit the hill country of Sri Lanka. For the absolute BEST weather, take a day trip to Nuwara Eliya between January and March .

If you book a day trip from Kandy to Nuwara Eliya, make sure that it swings by Ramboda Falls on the way.

This tour is a great option!

It stops by Ramboda Falls, a Tea Factory, and then allows you to enjoy Gregory Lake, one of the best places to visit in Nuwara Eliya, before heading back to Kandy.

#13 – Laxapana & Aberdeen Waterfalls

Two neighboring waterfalls that are worth the effort from Kandy are Laxapana and Aberdeen Waterfalls. These two waterfalls are both 300-400 feet tall and absolutely stunning natural wonders in Sri Lanka.

Not a lot of tourists make an effort to visit these waterfalls. They are not super convenient to get to from the major cities of Sri Lanka, but you are able to reach them from Kandy.

Laxapana Falls is about 2 hours and 30 minutes from Kandy. Aberdeen Waterfall is a little closer at 2 hours and 15 minutes. Since the two waterfalls are only 30 minutes from one another, you can visit both on the same day trip from Kandy!

The hikes to the base of the falls are both moderate hikes, doable for anyone who is relatively healthy! You can also swim in the pools below the falls! At Aberdeen Waterfall, there is even a local who takes tourists right up to the base of the waterfall in a kayak!

Best Time to Visit Laxapana & Aberdeen Waterfall

These two waterfalls are located in the Peak Wilderness Sanctuary, along with Adam’s Peak. Therefore, they are affected in similar ways by the two monsoon seasons. The best time to visit Laxapana Falls and Aberdeen Waterfall is between December and April!

How to book a tour for a day trip in kandy.

We use three different websites to book day trips from Kandy.

Viator is the first website we check. Viator.com is a product of TripAdvisor and has the largest inventory of tours in Sri Lanka. We try to find a tour with good ratings and a company that seems professional and trustworthy. Viator has a great selection.

If we can’t find what we are looking for on Viator, then we turn to Klook.com. Klook used to be our favorite website for tour guides and rentals in Asia. These days, a lot of the guides are still temporarily discontinued or unavailable, making it hard to find what we are looking for sometimes.

When all else fails, we turn to GetYourGuide.com . This company is actually wonderful. The only reason they are our last resort is that the prices run a little higher than the other two booking websites. However, if you book with Get Your Guide, you can be certain that you are getting a quality tour guide from a reputable company.

What If I Don’t Want to Take a Tour?

If you are the kind of traveler who is against traditional tours, you can always rent a scooter/tuk-tuk and drive yourself to these day trip destinations. You could also consider hiring a private driver for the day . With a private driver, you are in control of the itinerary and are able to stay as long as you like in each location.

Where To Stay in Kandy

The best area to stay in Kandy is near Kandy Lake, at the heart of the city. This location allows you to be within walking distance of the Queens Hotel and Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, as well as hundreds of shops and restaurants in Kandy city.

It is also nice to stay slightly outside of the city. This requires a bit of extra transportation to and from the best things to do in Kandy, but the hills on the outskirts of Kandy have some nice hotels with incredible views of the mountains!

We will share our most recommend places in Kandy for each travel budget, that way you can decide which place is best for your style of travel.

Budget Homestay in Kandy – Villa Serene

We stayed at Villa Serene for over a week during our time in Kandy. The owners were exceptionally helpful to us, helping us get petrol for our bike when there was a shortage, giving recommendations for where to go around Kandy, and helping us find transportation.

The villa has really large rooms and a nice living area that is shared among guests. The best part is that the hospitality here does not come with a high price tag. A room is less than $15/night to stay in Villa Serene.

Mid-Range Hotel in kandy – Skyloft Kandy

Skyloft Kandy is a very unique and beautiful hotel south of Kandy central. The hotel is located in the center of Kandy, with several close dining options for meals, and rooms come with complimentary breakfast. The rooms are very spacious, clean, and comfortable–complete with wifi, a private bathroom, and a terrace.

Luxury Hotel in Kandy – Earl’s Regency

Earl’s Regency is a gorgeous 5-star hotel close to the heart of Kandy. The room’s interior is stunning and clean, and the hotel has several highly praised amenities. There is a fitness center and a pool with lounge chairs for relaxing in the afternoons, as well as a highly-rated restaurant/bar and nightclub for hanging out in the evenings.

Earl’s Regency would be a great option for couples looking for some luxury in the mountains. Enjoy breakfast on the terrace together and end the day with a lovely drink by the pool!

There are so many delicious places to eat in Kandy . Together we spent almost two weeks in the city and had plenty of time to explore all of the Kandy cuisines! Some of our top favorite cafes in Sri Lanka were located in Kandy, and we enjoyed trying something new every day.

How to Get Around Kandy

If you are staying in central Kandy, you should be able to get to most of the top places in Kandy on foot. However, many hotels and homestays are located a little bit outside of town, and you may need to find a way to get to and from your hotel when visiting other parts of the city

We personally prefer to rent a car in Sri Lanka , or we like to rent our own tuk-tuk because it allows us to be really flexible with our time.

If you do not feel comfortable driving yourself around in a foreign country, then hiring a private driver or taking local taxis/tuk-tuks are also available to drive you around Kandy.

Rent a scooter.

Scooter rentals in Kandy are very affordable. We rented our scooter from Rent-A-Bike Kandy and were very pleased with the rental for the duration of our time in Kandy. We also used our scooter to visit some of the surrounding attractions outside of Kandy, like Ambuluwawa Tower and Aberdeen Falls! If you can’t find a rental shop on your own, simply ask your accommodation host to set you up with a scooter for a decent price! Our homestay was able to get a scooter for us for just $5/day.

Use Pick.me or local taxis

Since Kandy is one of the largest cities in Sri Lanka, local taxis and tuk-tuks are very easy to find. You can hail a tuk-tuk driver from the main road or use the local ride-sharing app, Pick.me, to call a taxi. Pick.me is very easy to use, but you will need a Sri Lankan phone number to sign up. When you first arrive at the airport in Sri Lanka, consider getting a SIM card for your phone.

Weather in Kandy

The peak travel season in Kandy is between December and April . The weather during this season will be hot and sunny most days, and all of the tour guides, restaurants, and hotels will be open for business.

Kandy is one of the more temperate places in Sri Lanka, but it is still affected by the Southeast monsoon from May to November. During this time, Mountain Peaks and rivers are inaccessible, and places like Adam’s Peak and Kitugala are way too dangerous to climb.

However, if you do find yourself in Kandy during the rainy season, you can still find good weather by taking day trips up north to the cultural triangle to places like Sigiriya, Dambulla, and Anuradhapura. This area has a less severe rainy season that doesn’t start until October.

What to Bring on a Kandy Day Trip

As usual, what to pack for your day trip from Kandy will highly depend on where you go…

If you are traveling north to the cultural triangle, you will want to bring lots of water, lightweight clothing, and things to protect you from the sun (hat/sunscreen). This region stays hot all year long, especially in June/July. You will probably want to pack as light as possible!

If you are traveling deeper into the hill country, then you will need to prepare for the temperature to be cool in the morning/evening, but moderately warm during the day. You will be most comfortable with a pair of pants, a t-shirt, and a jacket to throw on as the sun starts to go down. A rain jacket might be a good idea as well. Some day trips into the hill country include Nuwara Eliya, Ella, Adam’s Peak, or any of the waterfalls in Sri Lanka .

A Hiker's Guide to Sri Lanka's Knuckles Mountain Range

Named after its uncanny likeness to human knuckles, the Knuckles Mountain Range is a gorgeous UNESCO World Heritage Site and a popular spot for hikers.

The dense forest, surrounded by 34 mystical mountains that range from 900 to 2,000 metres, is home to stunning hiking trails. With cascading waterfalls in every clearing, quaint villages hidden amid the mountains, many a terraced rice fields as well as numerous rare and elusive animals, this 234-square-kilometre range displays the best of Sri Lanka’s diverse natural beauty.

How to hike the Knuckles Mountain Range

The Knuckles Mountain Range is considered one of the toughest hiking trails in the country and is best attempted by those with prior experience in hiking. That being said, no matter how experienced you are, it’s mandatory to have a guide. Besides the area’s vastness and the possibility of getting lost, hikers are only allowed to enter the protected reserve with a qualified guide. Failure to do so will land you in trouble with the authorities.

While this hiker’s paradise features as many as 34 trails, finding information on most of them can be difficult. It’s always best to ask your hotel or guide for suggestions. Be sure to let them know what you expect to see; some trails meander through rural villages while others go past waterfalls and lush vegetation.

Dothalugala nature trail

A popular trek is the Dothalugala nature trail, which winds its way up the Dothalugala Mountain and offers the most breathtaking of views from the south of the range. When descending, climb down from the other side so to complete a full circle of the mountain. The entire trail is 5.8 kilometres and starts at the Knuckles Conservation Centre in Deanston. A permit, which can be obtained at the centre, is needed to enter the area.

Nitro Caves

Another popular choice for hikers is the nature trail that leads to Nitro Caves , a massive cave inhabited by hundreds of bats. The 11-kilometre path starts at Corbett’s Gap and will take about five hours to complete. The caves do make for a great, albeit slightly unnerving, sight. Corbett’s Gap is itself a noteworthy attraction. Sitting at an elevation of 1,216 metres, it offers spectacular panoramic views of the mountain range, which makes for perfect Instagram shots.

Mini World’s End

Located towards the south of the mountains is Mini World’s End, a dramatic 1,192-metre cliff that offers sweeping views of the mountains. The trail to Mini World’s End is one of the two trails in the mountain range. It begins at the Knuckles Conservation Centre (KCC) and is approximately 1.5 kilometres in length. Again, a permit is required. On a cloud-free day, you can make out several villages and settlements dotted below in the valleys. There aren’t any barriers at Mini World’s End, so mind your footing at all times.

Duwili Ella trail

While all the trails are impressive, the crown goes to the Duwili Ella trail, a 40-metre waterfall hidden deep within the forest. What makes Duwili Ella special is the cave inside the waterfall, allowing hikers to get behind the waterfall, akin to the entrance of the Bat Cave.

Most opt for one-day excursions into the woods, but an overnight hike is recommended for the full experience. Huddling next to a crackling campfire away from digital distractions, with a luminous star-studded sky above and your closest friends around, is an experience not to be missed.

Pro tips: Streams are aplenty but there is a chance some of them might have dried up, especially during the dry season. Bring enough water bottles and refill them at every passing stream. The water here is completely safe to drink.

Since the range is teeming with leeches, be sure to bring anti-leech spray, anti-leech socks and other forms of protection with you to avoid any unpleasant surprises.

Other recreational activities in the area and attractions to visit

Although hiking is the biggest lure in Knuckles, the conservation site has plenty of other noteworthy attractions to visit.

Meemure is a lazy rural village deep inside the forests. With beautiful streams and waterfalls, it offers mesmerising views and photograph-worthy vistas. It is a little-known attraction, even among locals, so it’s easy to have an experience minus the selfie sticks and loud tourists. Mingle with the villagers, who are more than happy to converse, and discover Sri Lanka’s much-famed hospitality.

Kandy , the cultural capital of the tiny nation, is an hour’s drive from Knuckles. It is the perfect place to discover Sri Lanka’s kaleidoscopic culture. Visit the Temple of The Tooth or sip on the finest tea in the various luxury hotels perched upon the hills.

Make a trip down to the Aluvihara Rock Cave Temple in Matale and gain a first-hand experience of Sri Lanka’s famed rock temples. Built in the third century, the temple consists of multiple caves, which have religious frescoes on the walls and ceilings. Numerous statues of Lord Buddha can be seen throughout the site, including a massive reclining statue that makes for an impressive sight.

Places to eat

Since the Knuckles Mountain Range is a protected reserve, the construction of hotels and restaurants is not allowed. This means there aren’t many options in terms of food within the range other than the occasional convenience store in the villages.

Stock up on food and essentials in nearby towns, such as Kandy and Matale, before the hike.

How to get to the Knuckles Mountain Range

Getting into Knuckles is mainly dependent on where your lodging is. The most popular entrance to the reserve is via Matale. There isn’t any public transportation into Knuckles from this point onwards.

The other entrance is via Hunnasgiriya, which is closer to Kandy. Many buses travel to Hunnasgiriya but from there onwards, private transportation is required.

The roads are paved and are suitable for cars and other private vehicles. However, the winding roads can be quite narrow in some spots with steep drops, so it pays to be careful while driving here.

A Day Trip to Knuckles Mountain Range: Waterfalls, Rice Paddies and Mini World’s End

Experience an action-packed day trip to the UNESCO-listed Knuckles Range in Sri Lanka – perfect for hikers and non-hikers alike!

Named after the ridges along the mountain range that resemble knuckles of a closed fist, the Knuckles Mountain Range in Central Sri Lanka is a UNESCO Heritage Site that features stunning viewpoints, a cloud forest, waterfalls and hiking trails; the entire region is considered a super biodiversity hotspot.

According to UNESCO, “ the forests are globally important and provide habitat for an exceptional number of endemic species of flora and fauna ” including the shy and rare purple-faced langur monkey, leaf-nosed horn lizard from Knuckles, Asian elephants and even the Sri Lankan leopard. It also features almost all major climate zones including a dense “ cloud forest ” that helps to purify moisture in the air to form nutrient-rich streams and rivers that flow back towards the ocean.

There are dozens of trails and entry points into the Knuckles Mountain Range, and avid hikers and nature lovers could easily spend days upon days exploring the wonders of the region. However, if you are unsure of where to go and what to see in Knuckles, here is a good place to start!

Together with our experienced guide, we experienced a magical day trip to Knuckles forest reserve and hiked to the Mini World’s End near Riverston (or Riverstone), visited a local village and had a home-cooked Sri Lankan meal overlooking lush rice terraces and went swimming at the base of a roaring waterfall. Where to stay near Knuckles Mountain Range

The Knuckles Range can be accessed from Kandy or Matale, about 4 hours by car from Colombo . There are several options for where to stay if you are visiting the Knuckles Mountain Range, here are some of my recommendations:

1 day itinerary for Knuckles Mountain Range

This 1-day Knuckles itinerary is perfect for avid hikers and non-hikers alike – even though I am not a big fan of trekking (I’d much rather embark on a wildlife safari or cool down by the beach with a cheeky cocktail), the outrageous views and easy trails made this a highlight of my latest trip back to Sri Lanka. The best time to visit Knuckles in Sri Lanka is during the dry season from November to April – the other months experience more rain and trails can get muddy, and viewpoints may become very foggy. We got an early start at 7 AM and finished the itinerary in the late afternoon, though you can easily modify this itinerary by letting Aravinda know what you’re looking for; the best part about working with a local expert like Aravinda is that you aren’t signing up for a set itinerary that hundreds of other people have already been on.

Wondering what to do in Knuckles? Here is how we spent our perfect day in the Knuckles Mountain Range!

1. But first…breakfast

Before any physical activity it’s important to fill your belly! On our way to Riverston we stopped at a roadside family-run stall serving up freshly made hoppers and lentil vadai, and don’t forget the steaming hot tea.

These types of traditional stalls run on a trust-based system: you walk in, eat what you want from the table and tell them what you had at the end.

Remember this spot because you’ll want to stop for some post-hike treats to refuel at the end of the day!

2. Hike to the Mini World’s End (Pitawala Pathana) near Riverston

After breakfast, start your morning with this Knuckles hike: this hike is short and sweet and is one of several “Mini” World’s End spots around the island. The hike is no more than 2 KM-or-so and shouldn’t take more than 20 minutes each way, just watch your step because there is a lot of buffalo dung lying around!

The best part about this hike is the unobstructed views and jaw-dropping cliffs over Riverston – you’ll want to check out the various viewpoints for some seriously stunning photos! It goes without saying that you absolutely must be careful when approaching the edge of the viewpoints – there are a few where the drop is no joke. If you are uncomfortable or afraid of heights your safest bet is to stick to some of the earlier viewpoints along the trail that are a bit wider and further in from the edge.

Entry costs 650 LKR per person (approximately US$2-3 or 2 Euros).

Ready for your epic Knuckles day trip? I recommend staying at Madulkelle Tea and Eco Lodge for a luxury glamping experience high up in the hills with killer views, Rukgala Retreat for a peaceful yoga retreat experience, or The Grand Mountain Hotel in Matale for easy access to Knuckles.

3. Visit a local village for lunch

Most first-time visitors to Sri Lanka travel around the island for 1-2 weeks. The issue is, the vast majority of people visit the exact same spots and tourism spending is heavily concentrated on a handful of areas. One goal of the Sri Lankan tourism authorities is to spread that tourism load around more evenly, and to ensure that more communities are able to benefit not only financially, but also experience more cultural exchange with visitors. This is why the community-based tourism visit to a local village in Knuckles was unforgettable.

After trekking to Mini World’s End, we hiked another 30 minutes along a mostly-flat trail to a serene village nestled among lush rice paddies and terraces. In this village there are 32 families and homes who take turns hosting visitors and cooking delicious meals.

Here, our host walked to his king coconut tree and plucked coconuts for us to drink, before serving up the most scrumptious and lovingly-prepared vegetarian meal. Pumpkin curry, anyone?

We each plopped ourselves down in a chair and wolfed down our lunch while watching flocks of birds fly over the emerald-green rice paddies. Bliss!

I can’t recommend this experience highly enough, so make sure you get in touch with Aravinda early enough to make sure you are able to visit this village. Sri Lankan people are famous for their hospitality, and this type of homecooked meal and community-based tourism will make your trip to Sri Lanka one to remember for all time.

4. Sera Ella Waterfall

Finally, cool off from your Knuckles day trip by swimming in the pool at the base of the Sera Ella waterfall! The twin falls are located at the base of a few flights of rock steps and is best visited from November to about March during a weekday, as it can get busy over the weekends and school holidays.

Make sure you bring your swimsuit and towel so that you can hop in the water for a swim, and step behind the veil of the waterfall into the cave behind the plunging stream.

What to bring and what to wear to Knuckles

Weather in the Knuckles Mountain Range is unpredictable, so bring a light sweater or scarf . Though the hikes are not strenuous, make sure you wear proper walking shoes with long socks and pants – these will come in handy when you inevitably run into a pesky leech or two. You may also want to bring a bottle of salt water to get rid of them if they latch onto you.

Though some areas are shaded, you will still need sunscreen and/or a hat . Bring your swimsuit and towel if you plan on visiting the waterfall, a bag for any rubbish (leave no trace!) and a bottle of drinking water for the day.

While I’m not a fan of simply going somewhere for an Instagram shot it would almost be worth it for that viewpoint photo sitting on the wall edge in this case. The overall trip does sound fantastic, though, but then again, you always seem to have fantastic trips. I love the idea of spreading that tourism around and sharing the love.

Definitely worth it for the experience alone! The hike is relatively quiet and the air is fresh and cool – I loved it!

Train Journey from Kandy to Ella, Sri Lanka

T his was my solo travel to another country, there were surprises every day when I step out and fear crawling through my nerves from head to toe! Highlight on this one full week’s travel was this train journey from Kandy to Ella that everyone kept talking about.

I stayed for a night in Kandy only to board this train to Ella. The next day morning, I left for the railway station and bought a second class ticket.

This was the first railway station where I saw the ending or a beginning point for the trains to take off. I sat on the bench, watching this train slowly moving its wheels and resting on the tracks.

It was painted all green with birds, waterfalls, trees on it; I sat there admiring the painting’s beauty on the train. It was time for this train to leave, and the train I had to board arrived.

As the train started moving, I kept my Camera handy, my eyes wide open with the excitement to see what the hype is all about in this train journey.

I was seated with a family, requested them if I could sit by the window, and they happily said yes.

I leaned myself on the window gazing at the mountains stretching, breeze cuddling my face, tall pinus trees surrounding the tea plantations.

My eyes had turned green with the reflection of what I was seeing. Any corner I turn around, I see lush green trees, tea plantations, banana plantations, fields, and as an icing on the cake, rivers were flowing.

While the clouds begin to quarrel, raindrops started to romance with trees. The cold breeze, the romance of nature, slow train journey through tunnels were all an unforgettable experience.

Trains that do not function were left out in the corner in many places. Trees were growing through them as well. It’s either my love towards antique pieces or the way they appeared even if they are rusted; it just looked like a piece of art that I could have kept staring for hours.

From Kandy to Ella, the minute train left and reached; the journey was more than incredible. I have always loved train journeys, and I can say this one is the best journey I have been in so far!

An Unforgettable Pilgrimage to Anuradhapura – Sri Lanka

When we are in Sri Lanka we always love to arrange pilgrimages with family members. As a country with a lot of sacred cities, temples and historical sites, Sri Lanka offers many reasons for us to plan pilgrimages each year. It can be a pilgrimage to see temples and ruins of ancient city Polonnaruwa or it can be a pilgrimage to see Anuradhapura attractions, we always find these tours as a way to bond with family members while spending time in religious activities. Our trips to Kandy are also pilgrimages most of the time as temples are the main attractions, not only for visiting but also to spend time with religious and spiritual activities.

So, here is a travelogue of one of our recent pilgrimages to Anuradhapura which is one of the sacred cities in Sri Lanka.

It was last June that we were on another holiday in Sri Lanka. During this period, we spent time visiting Anuradhapura which is one of the sacred cities in Sri Lanka. I’ve visited Anuradhapura Buddhist attractions many times, but I still plan to visit the same places again simply due to the Buddhist beliefs and to spend time in spiritual activities.

As for most pilgrimages, we left our home early in the morning with the hope of reaching Anuradhapura in the noon. On the way to Anuradhapura, we stopped in a few places for breakfast and for short breaks. As there are fruit stalls along the road to Anuradhapura, it is always enjoyable to taste different fruits that are also fresh.

Finally, we reached Anuradhapura. After having lunch, our first visit was to the ‘Sri Maha Bodhi Tree’ which is one of the sacred places for Buddhists in Sri Lanka.

It is believed that the ‘Sri Maha Bodhi tree” is a sapling of Bodhi tree that Buddha was sitting during his enlightenment.

As usual, we always like to visit Ruwanwalisaya in the evening to avoid the sun. During the daytime, it can be really hot and it is not easy to go around the stupa and do the offerings with proper concentration.

In Thuparamaya , we also could see and join another Buddhist offering which is called ‘Kap ruk Poojawa’.After visiting both Thuparamaya and Ruwanwelisaya which are must-visit attractions in Anuradhapura, we reached our accommodation.

It was the day before June Full moon day which is also called ‘Poson Poya’.In Sri Lanka, full moon day is a holiday and it is a day for Buddhist activities. As a Major poya day, Pososn Poya is a crowded day for Anuradhapura and temples were full of devotees.

We also spent time having meals and drinks from ‘Dan sal’.Dan Sal are the places where people offer food and drinks for anyone without any charge. It is completely free to drink or eat from a ‘Dansala’ and these events are mostly organized during the major full moon days.

As the city was fully crowded, we also experienced huge traffic jams. However, we could visit the major attractions including Abhayagiriya and Jethwanaramaya .

We had great two days in Anuradhapura spending in spiritual activities. It was a pilgrimage that we like to remind again and again.

Useful tips for planning a pilgrimage to Anuradhapura

Leave early and reach Anuradhapura early morning to save time. So, you can visit more attractions during the few days of your stay.

Follow the rules when you enter the sacred city and the temples. Check this post on how to behave in a Buddhist temple if you are not sure.

Avoid bathing in lakes if you don’t know the designated places to have a bath or to enjoy water activities. Always read the signboards and warnings before you go to the water/lakes.

Hiring a van from a car rental service is always our preferred way to reach Anuradhapura when we plan pilgrimages. This is a stress-free way to reach Anuradhapura.

Accommodation in Anuradhapura

Book your accommodation before you reach Anuradhapura. During crowded days, it is not easy to find proper accommodation.

We booked Creston Park Accommodation through Agoda which is a decent budget hotel that is great for family holidays. The good thing about Creston Park Accommodation is that their food is really delicious. Also, the staff is friendly. The location is strategic and near to the sacred city of Anuradhapura. I’ve never been but I would like to be able to travel to Sri Lanka one day and explore the culture and places to visit.

Sri Lanka is still on my list! I was based in Maldives for sometime and met some Sri Lankans. From what they told me, it seems like a great place!

Our trip started with hiking through a dense forest. The forest was full of tall trees, colorful flowers, and chirping birds. The trail was steep and rocky, and we had to be careful while walking. The forest was so dense that we could hardly see the sun, and the air was full of freshness. We had to take breaks in between to catch our breath and hydrate ourselves. As we walked, we could hear the sound of a river, and after a few hours of hiking, we finally reached the river. The river was wide and had a strong current, and we had to cross it to continue our journey. We had to be careful while crossing the river, and we held hands to maintain our balance. The water was cold, and we could feel the current pushing us, but we made it to the other side, feeling proud of ourselves.
