SPEECH WRITING ABOUT THE ENVIRONMENT

Let’s break this speech writing guide on the environment into four different sections:

1. Tips to Remember Before You Write Your Speech

2. speech writing lessons on the environment: complete guide , 3. drawing inspiration from ‘great speeches on the environment’  , 4. a sample speech on the environment .

Hold on till the very end of this blog as we have a bonus tip to simplify this process, just for you.

1. Tips to Remember Before You Write your Speech

Crafting a movie requires the crew to plan everything with utmost precision and that’s exactly where the pre-production stage comes to play.

Likewise, before drafting a speech on the environment, you need to focus upon a few things to enhance the speech’s impact on your audience.

At the same time, these tips will help you to stand out in the crowd.

A) Understanding your True Purpose

know your true purpose as a speaker

You possibly cannot deliver a speech about the environment without feeling deeply about the issue.

Firstly, start by questioning yourself, ‘Why should I be concerned about  our environment ?’

Now, start looking for even the slightest changes in your lifestyle in terms of the environment.

These changes can be as evident as the scarcity of water and as ignored as the less appreciation of nature by humans.

This will provide you with the reasons as to how is the issue affecting you?

These reasons can be listed by you during the course of your speech to establish trust, credibility and relatability factor.

Get yourself aware of the urgency of the situation

Go on the internet, research the issue at hand and make yourself aware of the worst-case scenario, that is, ‘what would happen if human beings do not respond now?’

This way, you will connect with the issue emotionally and this will reflect in your voice as you deliver your speech.

You simply cannot expect your audience to feel deeply about the issue unless you yourself feel that emotional connect.

Because somewhere down the corner, we all are responsible for environmental degradation in our own ways.

This realization must first hit you before you convey this idea through your speech.

This emotional connect will reflect in the form of:

  • the content of your speech
  • vocal variety
  • body language

B) Brainstorming Session

mind mapping technique

A speech as informative as this needs to have right facts in just the right amount and at the right places.

The major issue with most of the environmental speeches is that the right facts are not incorporated in the right way.

  • So, begin with researching the issue and note down the environmental facts.
  • Prepare a mind map to better organize your thoughts . Jot down the main points and make a rough skeleton of your speech.
  • Once you have done this, try thinking from an audiences’ perspective . Ask yourself, ‘If I were the audience, what would be my expectations from a speech about the environment?’ Note down those thoughts as well.

Try not to be generic while doing the brainstorming session, include the pointers other speakers have missed out on.

In order to stand unique as an orator speaking about the environment, one must learn from the mistakes made by other speakers.

Understand what exactly is your audience looking for and frame your speech accordingly.

We have written an article on How to add facts in a speech? Check it out to balance your speech about the environment with just the right facts.

C) Who is your audience?

audience analysis

A speech about the environment has a dynamic audience . Thus, it can be delivered at a school, college or even a workplace for that matter.

Understand the demographics of your audience, like age and level of education, to mold your speech accordingly.

For instance, if you are delivering a speech about the environment at school, you might want to include less jargon and break down the content in a much simpler way for the students to understand.

Similarly, if you are delivering an environmental speech at a workplace, you can incorporate jargon along with relatable lifestyle experiences to convey your ideas better.

In a nutshell, formulate the content of your speech according to the audience you are catering to.

D) Duration of the speech

Instead of beating around the bush, a good orator tries to make a long-lasting impact without taking too much time of the audience.

Thus, try to keep your speech short and precise without falling into the trap of possible digressions.

After listening to so many speeches on the environment, we all know our expectations from the next speech we listen about the environment.

Thus, most important of all, prioritize the information and interestingly present that information. This way, you give away the essential information while retaining the attention of your audience.

We have written an article on How to deliver a 1-minute speech: Tips, Examples, Topics & More . Have a look at it to make your speech memorable within a short time frame.

Once you’ve learned this, the next step is to have smooth transitions in your speech. This is done to avoid any sort of blabber and convey the ideas effectively.

To know more about smooth speech transitions, check out Effective Speech Transitions: How to Make Your Speech Flow .

A) Out-Of-The-World Title

A speech about the environment can create a certain monotony in the minds of the audience, even before you actually deliver it.

As an audience, we expect that monotony in the environmental speeches.

Thus, a boring speech title can bore your audience to sleep.

Many a times, we stumble upon a speech title we haven’t ever heard of and are naturally drawn to know more about the speech.

The major issue with most of the environmental speeches in current times is a boring title. Titles like  Speech on Save Environment and Speech on Environmental Degradation  can seem pretty daunting to the audience and might disinterest them.

Instead, consider having a thought-provoking title that doesn’t give the speech idea away so that when the audience actually listens to your speech, they pay more attention and start connecting the dots.

This way, something unusual yet related to your speech can assist you to hold the attention of your audience.

Let’s look at a few interesting speech titles. All based on the environment!

Admit it, we’ve grown old reading that water is an essential pre-requisite for the crops to survive and grow.

But, what happens when a speech title tells you otherwise? You obviously get drawn to listen to the speech.

I’m sure after reading this speech title, you are now wondering, ‘which country is she talking about?’

So, the moment you come across a speech title like this, a sense of conflict has been created in your mind and you naturally want to know more about it.

B) Catchy Introduction

A catchy introduction begins with a strong opening line while bringing into light the main idea of the speech.

The attention span of the audience is at its peak at the beginning of a speech. So, now that you know this, make sure you capitalize it!

Instead of starting your speech with something as bland as a  Good Morning , attempt hitting new approaches to grip the attention of the audience throughout the speech.

The last thing a speech topic as common as the environment needs is a bland introduction.

Thus, working on a strong beginning is the most crucial element when it comes to speech writing about environment.

Here are a few interesting ways to jump start your speech:

Start with a story

We all love listening to stories! Be it fictional or real . It’s a personality trait which we all share in common.

You can start your speech on the environment with a story inspired from your own personal experience or you can create your own story.

But, remember even while creating a story from scratch, you need to sound realistic and establish relatability . So, it’s ideal to avoid any sort of exaggeration on your part.

Once you have decided on the story you wish to tell, remember to connect your story with the environment, in general.

To assist you in this process of crafting a story, we have written an article on 9 Storytelling Approaches for Your Next Speech . Check it out to know more!

In this TED Talk, the speaker begins by telling a story about camping by revisiting his childhood days. This gripped the attention of the audience all the way more.

Bringing the Element of Creativity

Use of adequate props and placards can assist you to add real value to the audiences’ experiences, particularly in a speech about the environment.

Think out-of-the-box and bring this element of creativity the next time you deliver a speech.

By bringing this visual element, you make your speech all the more memorable.

Let’s understand this better with the help of an example.

In this TED Talk about the environment, the orator decides to begin her speech by bringing a small jar. Have a look at how well she connects this prop with the essence of her speech.

C) Relatable Anecdotes

Well, what is the point of delivering a great speech if your audience can’t relate to it?

By stating relatable life experiences, you sound more realistic and believable . As a result, the audience starts respecting your thoughts.

For instance, while delivering a speech about environmental problems and solutions, start discussing how the environmental problems have affected you and your family and what solutions you are considering to deal with it.

Essentially, convey these anecdotes in the form of a story and make sure that these anecdotes are relatable.

D) Body of the speech

Here lies the main purpose of your speech!

It is at this point that you start supporting your ideas with relevant facts and evidence .

In this case, while delivering a speech about the environment, be aware of the real purpose of your speech.

If your speech about the environment is required to list down the solutions to save the environment, try leading the solutions with the micro-level steps which we all can practice in our day-to-day lives and then move onto the solutions at a community level.

Because the major flaw with most of the environmental speeches is that we focus a lot more upon the changes at a government level rather than bringing into light the changes at the individual and community level.

It all begins at home and then the awareness is spread at a community level.

Steer clear of stating the obvious while citing supporting shreds of evidence and think innovatively to come up with information that can actually add value to audiences’ experiences.

E) Drafting a Memorable Conclusion

A captivating conclusion keeps your speech alive in the minds of the audience.

First things first, avoid ending your speech with a bland ‘thank you’.

Instead, in the concluding statement, sum up the gist of your speech and provide the audience with a key takeaway.

To maximize the impact of your concluding remarks, end your speech with a poem or an intriguing question, and leave your audience awestruck by providing them with something to ponder upon.

Check this article to learn effective ways to end your speech with maximum impact.

F) Set the Right Mood

Setting the right tone of the speech is extremely crucial.

This way, you guide your audience to perceive your thoughts in just the intended manner.

You can set the right tone with the help of effective body language , facial expressions and voice modulation.

For instance, while delivering a speech about the environment which demands you to cite the solutions, a sense of hope must be reflected throughout the course of your speech. You can achieve this by sounding optimistic in your voice and having open body language.

In a similar fashion, a speech about the environmental problems would require you to sound empathetic in your voice.

3. Drawing Inspiration from ‘Great Speeches on the Environment’

4. A Sample Speech on the Environment

“Why should I be studying for a future that soon may be no more, when no one is doing anything to save that future?”, asked Greta Thunberg, and I’m sure we all are in search of an answer to this question, more so in these unprecedented times when the entire world is at a standstill. Environmental depletion, a term we take so lightly, has been increasing with each year passing by. This year (2020 as of writing), Earth Overshoot Day was observed on August 22, exhausting nature’s budget for the year in just seven months. Even as I speak and you listen to this speech, The residents of Goa are raising their voices against an infrastructure plan which is all set to cut through Mollem National Park and destroy the habitat of thousands of animals. Even as I speak, 10,000 clothing items are being sent to landfills every 5 minutes. All because of Fast Fashion! Even as I speak, more than 80 percent of the world population is living under light-polluted skies. All because of light pollution!  And, when we actually reflect upon all of these things, there’s no one to blame but us.  Yet, we choose to remain silent.  So, I ask you today,   Why are we silent? Why don’t we care about the planet we live on?  I believe that by choosing to remain silent over the environmental issues, we are doing a disgrace to the very act of humanity.  Ain’t we ought to save this environment while we still can?  I know that since time immemorial, we have grown up learning about sustainability. In the most literal sense, we PREACH sustainability. But when it comes to bringing that into practice, our values shy away.  All of a sudden, we start to run short of time. You know why? The reason is we don’t appreciate our environment, anymore. And, that’s the root cause that is holding us back in the pathway towards sustainability.  I still remember when I was 10 years old, my father and I had this really nice ritual of going to the park for evening walks. Back then, it just didn’t matter what headspace we’re in, the air of calmness that surrounded the park would just put us at ease. It was THAT therapeutic!   But, coming back to this so-called modern mechanized era, we’ve parted our ways with this ritual. Now, in these times, even the thought of going to a park sounds cliché to all of us!   We need to learn to appreciate, nurture, and love our environment in order to save it. Because it all begins at home! You and I CAN make the difference and now is the time to inculcate sustainable lifestyle habits. The first step here can be as simple as cutting down the waste we produce in the environment. Be it in terms of buying packaged fruits and vegetables from a farmers’ market or making the area you live in litter-free. Moving ahead, the next step might sound a bit difficult because let’s face it- We ALL love shopping! But, when it comes to leading a sustainable lifestyle, minimalism is the key. Start prioritizing every single time you shop for something. When you do this, you value things you own and don’t end up wasting so much.  Gladly, to our relief, the world isn’t that pessimistic. In this age of globalization, we now have people as ‘environmental influencers’ initiating a call for action. Let’s shower our love and support towards them by drawing inspiration from them.  Therefore, I now say,  Let’s pledge to align our values and actions.  Let’s pledge to spend more time in nature.  And most important of all, let’s pledge to save this planet while we are on this planet.

Excessive Use of Natural Resources Leads to Depletion In The End.

Radioactive materials are – without exception I would state – firm persuasive environmental speech topics and essay discourse themes for students. E.g.:

Radio Active Waste Management.

Intensive farming has many pros and cons. In the next example I deal with the cons. Note that each of them could be used as single persuasive environmental speech topics for a debate or essay:

The Disadvantages of Intensive Farming.

You also could take the opposite side and defend the pro-intensive farming arguments by attacking and replacing them for reasons in favor of the supporters of intensive farming. That will provoke immediate discussion among your listeners. Furthermore I would like to share alternative options for persuasive environmental speech topics:

  • Endangered species;
  • Marine debris and microplastics;
  • The sea level rise.

Endangered species – The international list of protected animals. E.g. the Red List of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature IUCN. Sharpen your persuasive communication skills and judge the conditions for protection.

Marine debris and microplastics – More and more are our ocean, seas, lakes and rivers polluted. Littering: plastic bottles, bags, and so on. Persuade your audience to act. Let them support coastal volunteer operations to remove and prevent debris.

The sea level rise – What is bad about it? What are the predictions of meteorologists regarding the reported weather and climate changes? What should we do to stop it? Is it possible to stop the rise of the sea level anyway?

10 Great Speeches on Saving the Environment

It seems to me that the natural world is the greatest source of excitement; the greatest source of visual beauty; the greatest source of intellectual interest. It is the greatest source of so much in life that makes life worth living. – David Attenborough

Sometimes all you need is a good leader.

Someone to rally the troops and give you a whisper of hope that what you believe is true and is indeed tied to your very soul.  For me that is the sustainability of our environment and being as green as possible during my time on Planet Earth.

Unfortunately not everyone has the ability nor the access to become a leader but ever so often a a gem manages to shine through and put into words everything the rest of us have so often thought but could never say so well.

A speech is often the mouth piece for the rest of us, something to refer to when we feel sad or alone in our quest for a better place or time.

Of course I’m already talking to the converted over here.  We already know how important our environment is, the effort we put into growing our own crops, using less plastic, recycling more or just deciding not to own a car make us the troops that put our fragile environment on the top of our lists.

However I was wondering (apart from the famous Al Gore speech), whether there were any more great speeches I was missing out on?  So I went and had a look and found these really inspiring talks and speeches from people who are as passionate as we are about the environment.

Hope you like them.

Speaking Environment Part 1: The Room, Setup, and Other Considerations

Speaking environment

As a presenter, it’s crucial that you give your speaking environment the same kind of attention you give to the content of your talk . Presentation logistics – including the room, the seating layout, the temperature, your audio and video tools, and more – play a critical role in the success of your presentation.

In most cases, you’ll have at least some influence over those considerations, and you should exert it to ensure the audience is as comfortable and receptive to your ideas as possible.

This post begins a four-part series that focuses on how to best prepare for and approach your speaking environment – from the room setup to your timing, as well as other considerations – so that your presentation is heard and experienced exactly as you intended.

We begin with some space-related elements that can affect the way your audience experiences your talk.

4 Ways to Improve Your Speaking Environment

1. choose the right room.

I once saw a band play at New York City’s 21,000-seat Madison Square Garden. The group was past their peak popularity and, unfortunately for them, they performed in an arena that was more than half empty. It was sad to see the one-time radio staple reduced to playing for thousands of empty plastic chairs.

Imagine if they had booked a smaller venue instead? The concert hall would have been sold out, the audience would have felt electrified, and the fans would have left feeling good that their favorite musicians could still pack a room.

That example highlights the decisive factor when selecting a room – you want one that places people as closely together as possible , but with just enough space between each person to ensure their comfort. (We look forward to being able to do that again post-pandemic!) It’s difficult to build an intimate rapport in a vast room with hundreds of square feet of unused space. (If you don’t have any say regarding the room selection, you may be able to influence the seating arrangement, which can help. We’ll say more about that in the next post.)

2. Be Wary of Environmental Factors

You’re probably familiar with the dreaded “war of the thermostat.” You like it cold; your co-worker likes it warm. You crank the heater in the autumn; your roommate throws open the windows to bring in crisp outside air.

While you may not be able to create the ideal room temperature for everyone, your goal is to create a space as conducive to the audience’s ability to receive your message as possible. High temperatures can negatively impact people’s moods, even triggering anger and hostile thoughts . Low temperatures, which multiple studies find are more uncomfortable for women than men, can come at the cost of productivity.

Rooms set to between 71- and 76-degrees Fahrenheit (about 22- to 24-degrees Celsius) are usually right on the money.

3. Head off Distractions

I once gave a talk in a hotel conference room. One room over, the guests were being led in a drum circle (long story). With only a thin wall separating us, it was virtually impossible to stick to my original plan – so we called for a break, migrated into the hallway, and finished our session there.

Hopefully, you won’t face such a massive distraction. But anticipating what could go wrong allows you to help mitigate risks, as the examples below demonstrate:

  • If loud sounds such as construction work or hallway music pose a threat to audience attention, ask the building manager or hotel staff to help halt the noises.
  • If the room in which you’re speaking has a beverage station, ask the catering manager not to refresh or clean it during your talk (I’ve had audiences distracted by banging glasses and poured ice).
  • If you’re speaking in a room that has large glass walls or windows, stand on the opposite side so audience attention remains on you, not the passersby on the other side of the pane.

Finally, avoid standing near the exit or entryway. It’s like being near the kitchen or bathroom in a restaurant. Every time someone arrives late or leaves to take a break, you must reengage your audience’s attention.

4. Adjust the Lighting

In general, avoid putting the audience in the dark or semi-darkness. Doing so makes it easy for them to zone out and makes it difficult for you to encourage interaction or elicit questions.

The lighting should allow the audience to see you clearly and, if appropriate for your event, have enough illumination to take notes or read handouts. If you’re displaying visuals, test your slides before the audience arrives to make sure the lighting isn’t washing out the screen. If necessary, dim the lights near the screen to create a sharper image.

Finally, technology allows most presentations to be displayed without the need for a projector. But if you do need one, ask that it be placed toward the front of the room. If it is too far back, you run the risk of being awash in light, blocking the screen, and having light beaming into your eyes.

Presentation Preparation is Key

You may have a greater influence in the way your public speaking environment is organized if you think about the setup you want to create as far in advance as possible.

Questions that will influence your decisions about such elements as seating arrangements, equipment, and timing include:

  • What’s the audience size?
  • Is this a short presentation or an hours-long training?
  • Are you providing a one-way flow of information or seeking regular participation and feedback?
  • Are you a keynote speaker, presenting to a small group, or moderating a discussion?
  • Do you want audience members to interact with one another?
  • Are you doing small-group exercises or breakout sessions?
  • Do you plan on using slides or other visuals?
  • Will your audience need or want to take notes?
  • Do they have space to comfortably rest their notepads, laptops, refreshments, etc.?

We’ll go into more depth on your answers to those preparation questions during this four-part series. But, for now, here are a few high-level pointers:

a speech environment

  • Arrive early on the day of your talk. Doing so gives you time to organize and prepare (and if necessary, clean) the room before you speak. You’ll often find me kneeling on the floor to tape down wires, clearing a conference room table of unnecessary wires, and moving chairs closer to the front of the room.
  • Coordinate with the audiovisual technician. A/V pros, if available to you on site, are crucial allies in getting your presentation up and running. However, their go-to best practices may not match your best practices for your specific talk. You are the person in the front of the room. Consider their ideas – they’re often right – but don’t automatically yield to their expertise.

Ultimately, audience members won’t notice when the setup is just right. They’re unlikely to comment on the crisp sound of a new microphone, for example – but you’ll hear about it if your words are incomprehensible due to reverberating echoes bouncing off the walls of a cavernous ballroom.

Here’s what we’ll cover in this series:

Save Environment Speech For Students

Speech on Save Environment is an important topic for students. Students can avail a well-written speech on the topic ‘save environment speech’ and learn how to write the speech that will impress the audience.

Long Speech

Good morning to one and all present here. I am glad to be given the opportunity to present a speech on Save Environment. Our environment is where we live. There must be harmony between the environment and living beings. In the present scenario, due to overpopulation, the environment is under distress. The situation is alarming as our natural environment is overexploited to meet human needs. It is because of many human activities that we are not able to maintain a healthy balance with nature.

The threat we are facing includes manmade disasters and global warming. These threats are real and have raised an alarming situation. We need to come together to save our environment. This speech on saving nature throws light on why it is needed by mankind to protect and preserve the environment. Our environment offers everything from clothing, water, food to shelter. All living beings are a part of the ecosystem. Hence, it becomes our responsibility to take care of the natural habitat.

Environmental pollution is one of the biggest issues that the modern world faces today. To meet the wants of society, we are putting too much pressure on the natural environment. This leads to damage to nature. The soil is losing its fertility, and in most places, soil pollution makes it difficult to grow crops. Even air and water pollution is the effect of mass urbanization and industrialisation. Controlling the pollution is a need of the hour, however, this still gets neglected by us. I am delivering the speech to save the earth to make you aware of what can be done by each one of us sitting here. We can make our earth a better place to live by taking simple steps like planting a tree, throwing waste in proper bins, saying no to plastic bags, etc. Rather than complaining about pollution, such small steps must be taken to make our environment sustainable.

Environmental problems are also the result of vast technological advancements in the last few years. The overuse of resources to build IT infrastructure is responsible for the loss of the natural environment. Government and international organizations must take proper steps to control pollution and save our mother earth. Environmental protection policies must be strictly enforced. Everyone has to come together to save our mother nature.

Saving our environment is much more important today than ever before. The degrading quality of earth life is what we all are familiar with. However, the early signs of the upcoming destruction are visible. The harsh weather conditions, increased carbon dioxide emissions, melting of glaciers, etc. are the major concerns that needed immediate attention. Let us all do what we can to save our environment and preserve our resources for future generations.

Short Speech

Good morning to all. Today, I am going to give a short speech on saving the environment. We are all aware of how the environment is important to us. We cannot afford to harm the environment any longer. In today’s modern world, our planet earth is affected significantly. However, if we want to live in harmony with nature, we cannot put the entire pressure on the environment. Living beings, for their survival, depend completely on the natural and manmade environment. It is impossible to live without the resources that the atmosphere provides. In such a situation, it becomes critical to save mother nature from getting over-exploited due to the increasing population.

We all know that factors like overpopulation, deforestation, etc. are responsible for environmental destruction. Small steps taken by us can go a long way. We must try to use as much public transport as possible to protect the air we breathe. We must throw garbage in the right bins so that proper disposal of waste and waste management can be done. We need to make efforts in the right direction to conserve our natural resources and habitat. Some of the ways by which we can achieve this are to use renewable energy, avoid plastic bags, plant more trees etc.

Mother nature offers so much to us. We must protect the environment and nature and be a part of sustainable development programmes.

10 Lines Speech

A heartfelt welcome to each one present here. I am here to deliver a speech on saving the environment and saving a life. It is no hidden fact that our environment is affected largely due to human activities. It is facing a threat at an alarming rate. We have over-exploited nature due to our greed. This has caused a natural imbalance. However, we can still do something and protect our environment from all the damages. We must plant more and more trees, throw garbage in the dustbins, avoid using plastic bags, etc. It cannot be denied that our natural environment is such an important part of our ecosystem. It is important to educate people about how the environment is getting damaged. Then only we can have green earth to live in.

Main Causes of Environmental Degradation

Pollution, in any form, is destructive to the environment, whether it be in the form of air, water, land, or noise.

Rapid population increase limits natural resources, resulting in environmental degradation.

Increasing population equals more need for food, clothing, and housing. More land is needed to grow food and provide housing for people. Deforestation occurs, as a result, contributing to environmental degradation.

Deforestation is also caused by using forest areas for agriculture, livestock grazing, fuelwood harvesting, and logging. When forest size decreases, deforestation contributes to global warming by releasing carbon into the atmosphere.

The exhaust gas released by industries is one of the primary sources of pollution. Lead is found in large concentrations in the environment due to a range of substances such as gasoline, paints, ceramics, and batteries.

In recent years, there has been a massive increase in the number of private vehicles. The higher the number of cars, the higher the rate of pollution that causes smog. Lower-level ozone, which is detrimental, is caused by hydrocarbons emitted by engines.

Speech on plant trees, saving mother earth is important for students as it will make them aware of how to use natural resources and how a healthy balance can be maintained between the environment and human life.

FAQs on Speech on Save Environment

1. What is the best way to prepare a speech?

Giving a speech in class pushes students to step outside of their comfort zone, especially if they are required to take a stand on a social issue. Students gain courage, conviction, and fluency when they learn to face their insecurities and reply articulately to opposition with practice. The following tips will help students in delivering a great speech:

The size of the audience is one of the most primary considerations when giving a speech. High school students should consider the audience and the context for the speech before digging into stacks of research resources.

Students should slim down their attention and write a clear thesis statement that will act as a road map for the rest of the presentation. The speakers should then choose two or three major topics that they can address in the time allocated.

Decide the basic goal of your speech or presentation if you're informing, presenting, or entertaining.

When practising, keep track of your time from beginning to end and read the complete speech numerous times.

It can be beneficial to incorporate hand gestures to explain points in your speech. Hand gestures will not only help you communicate with the audience, but they will also assist you to remember important points.

A few people in the audience will have questions about your speech. Consider some of the products you might receive. Then jot down your responses and practice expressing them aloud.

2. How to create awareness about environmental pollution among people?

You must first ensure that you have a good understanding of environmental-related issues before you can begin promoting environmental consciousness in your community. Do some online research to learn about the root of pollution in your neighbourhood. Share your information with as many people as possible so that they are aware of the effects of pollution and how to avoid them. Creating an environmental group is another way to raise awareness. Various social media platforms can be used as tools to assist you in educating more people. The number of environmental challenges appears to be infinite, and while they are all crucial, it is easy to become overwhelmed. Choose one subject to concentrate on at a time.

3. What are the most important methods to conserve the environment?

Reduce the amount of waste you generate. Conserve natural resources and landfill space by following the three "R's" that are – Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.

Deforestation must be controlled or, ultimately, stopped.

The less water you consume, the less drainage and wastewater end up in the ocean.

Afforestation must be fostered, and public awareness must be promoted.

Energy-efficient light bulbs reduce greenhouse gas release. Also, flip the light switch off when you leave the room.

Fuelwood and timber wood should be used wisely.

In your house and office, use non-toxic materials.

We should maintain grazing lands and produce cover crops to keep soils from blowing away.

Using public transportation, walking, or riding a bike to class are all preferable options that assist the environment, save money, and provide exercise.

A Speech on the Environment

(The following speeches were updated 25/05/2020)

Dear Ladies and Gentlemen,

The following speeches are on the important subject of ‘environment’. Before we examine the topic of environment I would like to give credit that, 13,629,563,106+ trees have been planted as of the 4 th of February 2024 toward the Plant 1 Trillion Trees initiative. While scientists agree it’s not the first choice method for offering a world where heating … with CO2 does not spin out of control, (after all we would love The Indonesian rain forest and the Amazon rain forest to be preserved – and to see the end of CFC’s in air conditioning units) but it’s currently our best back up plan and achievable.

1. Speech on the Environment

The environment plays a pivotal role in the existence and growth of all living things on earth and importantly to humankind’s daily lives.  The condition of the environment is very important for the quality of life that humans lead.

Speech on Environment

Speech on the Environment

The definition of ‘Environment’ by the Cambridge English dictionary: ‘The air, water, and land in or on which people, animals, and plants live.’

The environment is extremely important for the growth of all life on the earth. It is the duty of human beings to protect the environment for all species and for our own future.

The abuse of the environment is a hot topic for discussion in the recent times. Several human activities and the high growth of populations are the most important factors causing harmful affects to the environment.

Let us explore some of humankind’s destructive activities: humankind has always cut down trees to make way for farming and or to use the wood and plants. A few great forests remain, namely the Amazon and Indonesia’s great forests. These are under threat by humankind who are exploiting them for logging or to clear them for farming palm oil which is highly sought after world wide. Brazil and Indonesia should be helped by the international community to save these precious resources from deforestation.

Humankind is filling the atmosphere with green house gasses like CO2 and other harmful emissions from industry and fossil fuel use. Hydrofluorocarbons and CFC’s from cooling found in air conditioners cause global warming.

The oceans are being polluted by plastic waste which causes sea life like dolphins to die from stomach problems. According to Nola:

‘plastic six-pack rings can do to marine life. They tangle the wings of sea birds, choke seals and warp the shells of growing sea turtles.

What are the impending dangers: Staggering CO2 emissions are higher than the previous 400,000 years according to the official NASA website.   With other  harmful emissions such as green house gasses released by coal and natural gas and HFC’s the earth heated up by .8 degrees since 1880.

According to Business Insider and NASA some scientists believe the earth may heat up by an incredible 6 degrees by the end of the century. Nations have pledged to keep global warming down to 1.5 % under the Paris Accord. The last 20 years have been the most warming on record. What does this mean for life on Earth? The outlook is gloomy to say the least unless attitudes change. An unprecedented list of animals will become extinct as habitats shrink and oceans encroach the land.

According to National Geographic , Greenland’s coast revealed it lost 280 billion tons of ice between 2002 and 2016. Newer research revealed by scientists and the BBC is that melting from underneath the surface of Greenland ice is much more severe than thought, causing run offs in to the ocean. Ice caps around the world are melting four times faster in the last decade according to NASA.

360 billion tonnes adds 1 mm to world sea levels. However Greenland’s ice sheets will continue to melt at more alarming speeds while temperatures rise. If it were to completely melt it would raise sea levels by 7 meters. The Greenland ice sheets are a fraction of the world’s ice. All of the major ice sheets are showing alarming rates of melting. Antarctic ice melting is speeding up at 6 times more than 4 decades ago according to National Geographic. In short the tipping point is nearer than first imagined. 13 years is an estimate by many scientists. By the end of the century if current heating of the planet rises as predicted large areas of every major city will be flooded. Crops will be flooded and human kind will be in a perilous position (will be on very thin ice – excuse my inappropriate pun).

In November 2019 Australia recorded Australia’s 2 hottest days since records began. Weather of 42 degrees was recorded in Sydney. Fires have raged across the nation amid the catastrophic heatwave. More than 100 fires broke out in South Australia.

The status quo of the environment is on a slippery downward path and mankind should try its level best to protect the destruction of the environment. To save the environment is the need of the hour and some active steps or actions should be taken immediately as the world teeters on the brink of environmental doom.

The best way to protect and save the environment is that human beings should be made aware of the fact that what the environment provides us and what effects the degradation of the environment will have on us. The heating of the planet by activities of mankind is a major cause for concern. As the earth gets hotter, ice melts and water levels rise, Illness, hunger and flooding will be a major problem this century if nothing is done. Swathes of farming land will be flooded. If all human beings learn the importance of the environment we can actively participate in the campaign of saving the Earth.

What can we do to help?

Some good news: with humankind’s innovation it’s not too late to even reverse global warming and pollution of the environment. Lets look at some cases for the good of the environment. A Florida brewery has unveiled six-pack rings that feed sea turtles rather than kill them. After years of research and development, the rings -made of wheat and barley are now entering south Florida stores. CO2 storage research is making headlines in Science. A team of researchers have found a way of storing CO2 harmlessly under the ocean floor. It will need a change of attitudes and large investment to make this CCS vision practical.

We can help in personal ways and governments should help nationwide and globally. On a personal level we can stop using plastic bags and reusable plastic straws. We can use cloth and other reusable bags when we go shopping. We can try to use less products with palm oil which is prompting widespread deforestation. We can lower our carbon footprint by eating less meat – large scale farming creates huge amounts of CO2 from the emissions and upkeep of cattle.

If we live in cold climates we can switch from gas boilers to heat pumps which are more energy efficient. If we live in warmer climates we can use ceiling fans which are more energy efficient than air conditioning units until industry stops using HFC’s which are warming the planet.

Governments can should stop projects for greatly increase population growths for economic gains as populations are using resources and encroaching on nature and causing CO2. Governments should protect habitats which are almost never given back to nature. Governments can phase out use of Hydro fluorocarbons and CFC’s in refrigerators and all air conditioners as they have a staggeringly high green house warming affects.  Governments should promote the conditions for use of electric cars and electric flight.

2. Environment short speech

The environment is precious and has existed in a remarkable state to allow humans to thrive. We are dependent on the environment for our basic needs. There is a balanced natural cycle that exists between the environment and human beings.

Human beings have started overusing natural resources and have broken this natural balance. Human societies are playing a vital role in upsetting the conditions for wildlife and the wellbeing of the environment that allows humans, sea life and mammals to thrive. The result:  the planet we live in is suffering deforestation, pollution, extinction of various species and rising temperatures.

Human actions directly affect the planet in general. The indiscriminate exploitation of the environment has led to an ecological crisis. With the improvement of technology and medical care, the interaction with the environment has changed. Humankind has in it’s power the skills to halt the problem. Firstly, it will take a change of attitudes.  Populations are growing at rapid rates in some countries, adding to the sad plight of the environment in general.

Many countries have  problems protecting the environment. China is the biggest user of plastic in the world and alarmingly the country’s largest rubbish dump – the size of around 100 football fields – is already full, 25 years ahead of schedule. Past mass population drives have helped cause the problem.

In a positive move to help the environment, China, announced on the 20 th of January, 2024 it is banning single use non-degradable plastic bags in major cities by the end of 2024 and in all towns by 2024. Restaurants will also not be able to use single use plastic straws.

With the growth of populations natural resources are getting depleted. This will cause a huge problem in our future generations. Some effects of this are soil erosion, exhaustion of underground water, shortage of fresh drinking water, rise in atmospheric temperature, melting of ice caps, rise of sea level and the list goes on.

Effect on human beings:

The deterioration of the environment inherently affects human beings. The depletion of the ozone layer causes skin cancer. Moreover, excess pollution leads to various respiratory problems like asthma or lung cancer. It is also said to affect the agriculture. If those causes are not bad enough, if the ice fields melt sea levels will rise causing widespread disasters.

According to research, the perennial snow mountains in Tibet were covered in thick layers of snow. In the recent years it has started melting and is getting thinner day by day. This is a serious issue as it will lead to the rise in the sea level and will also lead to an increase in the average temperature of the planet. As the temperature of the oceans increase, hurricanes and typhoons become more frequent.

Speeches on the Environment

It is time to get past the stage of denial and ignorance. The world is heading towards an inevitable result, and we need to take matters in to our own hands. It is imperative to abide by recommendations issued by The World Health Organization.

What can we do to help the environment?

Planting a trillion trees across the planet is one of the best and cheapest ways of taking 25 percent of CO2 out of the atmosphere and helping tackle the crisis of global warming. The need for urgent action is clear, as rapid climate change is progressing apace.

Speech on Environmental Awareness

A speech on environmental awareness is an important topic for everyone to address environmental challenges. This speech topic can highlight the causes and consequences of global warming, GFGs, groundwater depletion, melting of ice caps and glaciers, etc. Here we have highlighted some samples of speech on environmental awareness for students.

This Blog Includes:

1-minute speech on environmental awareness, 2-minute speech on environmental awareness, 10 lines on environmental awareness.

‘Good morning to everyone present her. Today, I stand before you to present my speech on environmental awareness. Environment refers to the world around us. If we have to keep ourselves safe, we must keep our environment safe. Therefore, environmental awareness is an important topic and we must take our decision in the right direction.

Overpopulation, degradation of the natural environment, pollution of rivers and water bodies, deforestation, etc. are major factors affecting our natural environment. Nature is paying the price of careless human activities.

From individuals to large organizations,  everyone must work hand in hand to enact and enforce policies that prioritize environmental sustainability. Using public transport can help reduce air pollution. Using the blue dustbin for dry waste and the green dustbin for wet waste can help in waste management. Avoiding single-use plastics, switching off appliances when not in use, using renewable energy like solar and wind energy, and planting more trees can greatly improve environmental health.’

‘So let’s take care of our mother nature and work on a greener, healthier, and sustainable environment because our environment’s health is our health.’

‘Good morning my teacher and my friends. Today, I stand before you to present my speech on environmental awareness. We only have one home; our environment. Yet, we are damaging it at an alarming rate. According to a report released by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), 881 animal species have gone extinct since 1900.’

‘Environment awareness is important because it helps us understand the current state of the environment, including the causes and consequences of environmental problems, is fundamental to environmental awareness.’

‘The environment is losing its natural strength. The average surface temperature is rising, trees are cut down, animal habitats are lost, and smoke is released into the air and water bodies. Our environment has gifted us with everything we needed; food, clothes, shelter, etc. Yet, today, we are the biggest threat to the natural environment. It is all because of our careless attitude towards Mother Nature.’

‘Taking care of our natural environment is our primary responsibility. Small steps like banning single-use plastics, switching off-lights appliances when not in use, closing water taps, etc. Also, adopting sustainable practices in daily life, such as reducing waste, conserving energy, using eco-friendly products, and supporting environmentally friendly initiatives can significantly improve environmental health.’

In 2019, the government of India banned single-use plastics like polyethylene bags and plastic bottles. Experts suggest that instead of using plastic bags, we can look for alternatives and eco-friendly options like paper bags or jute bags.

‘In the end, I would like to conclude by saying that adapting to environmentally friendly activities should be our top-most priority. By polluting the air that we breathe, water that we drink, and food that we eat, we are not only damaging the environment but our health too.’

Here are 10 lines on environmental awareness. Feel free to add them to your speech writing topics.

  • Environmental awareness means understanding the impact of human activities on the planet.

Climate Action: It’s time to make peace with nature, UN chief urges

The UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, has described the fight against the climate crisis as the top priority for the 21st Century, in a passionate, uncompromising speech delivered on Wednesday at Columbia University in New York.

The landmark address marks the beginning of a month of UN-led climate action, which includes the release of major reports on the global climate and fossil fuel production, culminating in a climate summit on 12 December, the fifth anniversary of the 2015 Paris Climate Agreement.

Nature always strikes back

Mr. Guterres began with a litany of the many ways in which nature is reacting, with “growing force and fury”, to humanity’s mishandling of the environment, which has seen a collapse in biodiversity, spreading deserts, and oceans reaching record temperatures.

The link between COVID-19 and man-made climate change was also made plain by the UN chief, who noted that the continued encroachment of people and livestock into animal habitats, risks exposing us to more deadly diseases.

And, whilst the economic slowdown resulting from the pandemic has temporarily slowed emissions of harmful greenhouse gases, levels of carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide and methane are still rising, with the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere at a record high. Despite this worrying trend, fossil fuel production – responsible for a significant proportion of greenhouse gases – is predicted to continue on an upward path.

Secretary-General António Guterres (left) discusses the State of the Planet with Professor Maureen Raymo at Columbia University in New York City.

‘Time to flick the green switch’

The appropriate global response, said the Secretary-General, is a transformation of the world economy, flicking the “green switch” and building a sustainable system driven by renewable energy, green jobs and a resilient future.

One way to achieve this vision, is by achieving net zero emissions (read our feature story on net zero for a full explanation, and why it is so important). There are encouraging signs on this front, with several developed countries, including the UK, Japan and China, committing to the goal over the next few decades.

Mr. Guterres called on all countries, cities and businesses to target 2050 as the date by which they achieve carbon neutrality – to at least halt national increases in emissions - and for all individuals to do their part.

With the cost of renewable energy continuing to fall, this transition makes economic sense, and will lead to a net creation of 18 million jobs over the next 10 years. Nevertheless, the UN chief pointed out, the G20, the world’s largest economies, are planning to spend 50 per cent more on sectors linked to fossil fuel production and consumption, than on low-carbon energy.

Put a price on carbon

Food and drinking supplies are delivered by raft to a village in Banke District, Nepal, when the village road was cut off due to heavy rainfall.

For years, many climate experts and activists have called for the cost of carbon-based pollution to be factored into the price of fossil fuels, a step that Mr. Guterres said would provide certainty and confidence for the private and financial sectors.

Companies, he declared, need to adjust their business models, ensuring that finance is directed to the green economy, and pension funds, which manage some $32 trillion in assets, need to step and invest in carbon-free portfolios.

Lake Chad has lost up to ninety per cent of its surface in the last fifty years.

Far more money, continued the Secretary-General, needs to be invested in adapting to the changing climate, which is hindering the UN’s work on disaster risk reduction. The international community, he said, has “both a moral imperative and a clear economic case, for supporting developing countries to adapt and build resilience to current and future climate impacts”.

Everything is interlinked

The COVID-19 pandemic put paid to many plans, including the UN’s ambitious plan to make 2020 the “super year” for buttressing the natural world. That ambition has now been shifted to 2021, and will involve a number of major climate-related international commitments.

These include the development of a plan to halt the biodiversity crisis; an Oceans Conference to protect marine environments; a global sustainable transport conference; and the first Food Systems Summit, aimed at transforming global food production and consumption.

Mr. Guterres ended his speech on a note of hope, amid the prospect of a new, more sustainable world in which mindsets are shifting, to take into account the importance of reducing each individual’s carbon footprint.

Far from looking to return to “normal”, a world of inequality, injustice and “heedless dominion over the Earth”, the next step, said the Secretary-General, should be towards a safer, more sustainable and equitable path, and for mankind to rethink our relationship with the natural world – and with each other.

Long and Short Speech on Environment in English

Environment speech 1.

Good Morning Principal, Teachers, and My Dear Friends!

As of today, the whole school has been assembled here for this beautiful occasion of World Environment Day, which is celebrated on 5 th June every year; I would like to say a few words dedicated to the environment.

The environment is the surroundings made from five elements: Air, Water, Land, Sky, and Fire for us to flourish. It has always been said that only earth has the most favorable climatic conditions to help us survive. We should be very grateful to the earth that we have been provided with such a great environment with everything in its nature that helps us thrive. But day by day, we are ruining it on the highest pitch that will eventually lead us towards our destruction.

We should understand the importance of the natural environment, try to deduce our non-eco-friendly activities, and imperatively plant as many trees as possible and save water, which are the two biggest issues.

Thank you, and have a nice day!

Environment Speech 2

Hon’ble Principal, Teachers, and My Dear Friends!

As this special assembly has been called to address the biggest issue these days regarding our environment, I would like to express my views on it. The world has recognized that our environment is not as it was before. Drastic changes have occurred in a few years, such as climatic changes, increment in natural disasters, etc., all due to our changing lifestyle.

Our environment consists of 5 elements- Air, Water, Land, Fire, and Sky and we have disturbed the process of the entire ecosystem by cutting the vast amount of trees that contribute the most to balancing the environmental cycle, installment of large polluting industries, hunting/poaching of animals leading towards their endangerment, etc.

Out of this, the question arises what kind of future we want or what kind of future we will hand over to our next generations? Is this the kind of development we all have dreamt about? Walking with a mask on our faces, struggling in floods and earthquakes, destruction of animals who aren’t even aware of what’s happening.

Now, this is high time we need to recognize the importance of our natural environment and try every possible action towards saving it, from saving water to planting trees.

Environment Speech 3

Good morning to the Excellencies, my respected teachers, and my dear friends. The topic of my speech is Environment. The environment is the surrounding in which we live. It is the source of life. Our whole life is dependent on the environment. It directs our life and determines our proper growth and development.

The good or bad quality of social life depends on our natural environment. Human beings need food, water, shelter, and other things depending on their environment. A balanced natural cycle exists between the environment and the lives of humans, plants, and animals. Human society plays a vital role in degenerating the natural environment, negatively affecting this planet’s lives. All the human actions in this modern world directly impact the whole ecosystem.

All the actions have brought a big change to this planet, resulting in many environmental problems. The increasing demand for technologies and industries in modern times impacts nature. The growing invention for new technologies has changed the interaction of people with an environment, which permits more populations to grow.

Modern technologies have immense power and have altered the whole environment in an unimagined way. The indiscriminate use of the environment is the root of the ecological crisis. Such continuous increases in technologies and human behavior are correspondingly very serious. Such amazing technologies became the reason for economic growth in the 20 th century; however, they dramatically affected natural resources.

Environmental problems include rapid growth in world population, deteriorating natural resources, diminishing forests and wetlands, erosion of soil and coral reefs, depleting underground water, regular shortage of fresh drinking water, vanishing plants, and salinization in Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East. Some other issues are loss of biodiversity, rapid extinction of some important animal species, collapse of fisheries, rising air and water pollution, rise in atmospheric temperature, thinning of ozone layer, spoiling rivers, seas and underground resources.

Even though science and technology have radically altered the terms of adaptation to the nature, we still need to adapt to the environment. Human society is embedded in an environment. We must not forget that the human being is first and foremost an animal, sharing living space with other animal species in an environment on which they are mutually dependent. It is our responsibility to save our environment and earth and make the possibility of healthy and happy life here.

Environment Speech 4

Good morning to the Excellencies, my respected teachers, and my dear friends. As we have gathered here to celebrate this occasion, I would like to speech over Environment. To run life in a healthy, happy way, we all need a healthy and natural environment. Continuously increasing the human population adversely affects the forests. Human beings are cutting forests to a great extent to make their home live securely; however, they do not think of the problems arising from the lack of forests.

It completely disturbs the natural cycle between the environment and life on the earth. Because of the over-population, the number of various chemical elements is increasing in the atmosphere which ultimately causes irregular rainfall and global warming. We cannot imagine the negative effects of global warming on the climate and the lives of human beings and other living species.

According to the research, it is found that the perennial snow mountains of Tibet were covered by thick snow in the past; however, those thick snows are getting very thin day by day over the last few decades because of global warming. Such a condition is a very dangerous situation and an indication of the end of life on earth, which needs to be taken very seriously by all countries worldwide. It is very true that climate change goes very slow; the however, slow continuous process is very dangerous.

Because of the regular changes in the environment physical structure of human beings and other living species has been changed from generation to generation. Increasing human population needs more land for agricultural cultivation and living purpose, which force them to cut more trees and forests, so deforestation has its dangerous side effects.

The increasing the level of industrialization has countless harmful effects on the atmosphere because of the poisonous chemical emissions and dangerous waste drainage in the big water resources such as the Yamuna, Ganga, and other rivers. The ever-changing (negatively) environment is not the issue of only some countries or government; it is the issue of whole human fraternity because we all are the reason of this negatively declining environment, so we all are responsible to save our natural environment for the healthy survival of life on the earth.

Protecting the atmosphere is a matter of high importance for all the present and future generations of mankind. The main purpose of my speech today over the environment is only to increase the public awareness among common people about the reasons of declining environment as well as need of healthy and natural environment for the life on earth. So, it is my humble request to all of you that you please contribute to saving your environment.

Environment Speech 5

Good morning to my respected teachers and my dear friends. As we have gathered here to celebrate this occasion, I would like to give a speech on the Environment to increase awareness among the public about the negatively changing environment. An environment is the natural surrounding which covers and protects us from the natural disasters.

However, our healthy and natural environment is getting worse daily and taking the form of demons affecting everything from non-living to living being we know is two types of environ: natural environment and built environment. The natural environment is one that exists naturally, and the one for which man is responsible such as cities etc., is called the built environment. There are many natural and unnatural factors polluting the whole natural atmosphere.

Some of the natural factors like volcanoes, floods, etc. are the reasons for the declining environment. However, manmade reasons are more rampant caused due to reckless and caustic human nature are highly responsible for the environmental pollution. Self centred human activities are highly responsible for the destruction of the environment. Other environmental threats like forest degradation, global warming, pollution, etc. are the reasons for environmental degradation. Continuous increasing temperature of the earth’s surface in the atmosphere because of the many human-made and natural means calls to the various natural calamities causing disturbance to a great extent to the healthy and common life of human and all other living beings.

Our natural environment has become hugely changed in the last few decades and has taken the form of a big and powerful demon affecting the lives of people every single moment. Nature has made everything to run in balance with the natural cycle however many factors causes environmental corrosion. The factors like population growth and economic advancement are considered as the major factors giving rise to many other secondary factors.

We must understand the importance of ecological balance and try our best to run it naturally to prevent the effects of environmental disasters and promote a a healthy environment. We should promote common public in our surroundings for a clean and green environment to prove the meaning of proverbs life “won’t have a society if we destroy the environment.”

Environment Speech 6

Hi all, I would like to say good morning to the Excellencies, respected teachers, and my dear friends. As we all know that we have gathered here to celebrate this auspicious occasion, I would like to speak over the environment of our continuously declining environment so that we all together can be successful in saving our environment by taking some effective steps. As we know that we live on the planet of the earth, having different types of surroundings called environments within which we can eat healthily, breathe freshly, and live safely.

However, what happens to our lives if any means of natural or manmade causes of environment degradation occurs? We cannot imagine the extent of loss to the human and other living beings’ existence. The ecology balance and natural cycles has become disturbed which is very hard to bring back and give it a natural shape. However, there is a common “saying that “prevention is better than cure,” so we never get tired of trying our best to save the environment.

The physical environment on this planet provides all of us a favorable required condition and supports the existence and growth of various forms of life The nature provides natural or physical environment however all forms of the living beings together constitute another environment called biological environment. Both environments are closely connected and make a unique natural system for the life survival. If the biological environment gets disturbed, the physical environment automatically gets disturbed, and both hugely affect human lives together.

Another environment that is completely dependent on human is the socio-cultural environment made by human beings. Whatever environment is, it must be healthy, safe and secure to continue the evergreen life on the earth in present and future.

We should realize our mistakes and concern about the environment in order to keep it clean, safe and secure for a healthy life. Many human activities like deforestation, industrialization, technological improvements, and so many others are leading our environment towards danger and keeping lives at risk by influencing the growth, development, and survival of all organisms.

Various types of environmental pollution, such as water pollution, air pollution, noise pollution, soil pollution, etc., are disturbing the ecosystem and causing a variety of health hazards to human beings and animals. Environmental pollution damages the ecosystem and destroying the delicate balance of the natural ecosystem. So, nowadays environmental pollution is a matter of great concern and consideration for which we all together follow some effective steps and carry on until problems get solved completely.

Effect of Speaking Environment on Speech Production and Perception

Peter howell.

1) Division for Psychology and Language Sciences, Faculty of Life Sciences, University College, London

Environments affect speaking and listening performance. This contribution reviews some of the main ways in which all sounds are affected by the environment they propagate into. These influences are used to assess how environments affect speakers and listeners. The article concludes with a brief consideration of factors that designers may wish to take into account to address the effects.

1. Introduction

This work considers how environments affect speech behavior. The principal effect environments have on produced speech is that they modify its acoustic structure and, when a speaker hears this altered speech, it can influence the properties of the speech that is uttered. The changes to the speech sound and noise sources that are present in the environment can affect how listeners process the speech sounds. This contribution starts with a brief review of the way environments alter sounds. It then considers how psychologists have determined how the environment influences speech production and perception. Where speech production and/or perception are adversely affected, designers may wish to modify the environment to reduce the impact of these influences.

2. How environments affect sounds

In free field conditions there are no walls or objects to affect sound as there are in enclosed spaces. When a sound enters an enclosed space or a space with obstacles, it is affected in several ways. Three ways in which sounds are affected by environments are discussed: timing, frequency and intensity structure.

The temporal properties of sounds are altered in different ways which depend on the dimensions of the room, its contents and the material on the walls. Perhaps the most obvious effect is when an echo occurs. This is a single repetition of the sound source caused by the sound-wave coming against an opposing surface which reflects it. Echoes occur when there is more than one repetition. Some buildings (such as mosques) have been specifically designed to enhance echoes.

The time the echoes arrive after the direct sound depends on the room’s dimensions. The delay between the original sound and the first echo can be calculated using the distance between the sound source and the reflecting object divided by the speed of sound. For example, if a wall is 17 meters from a sound source and the speed of sound is 340 meters per second, the echo will be heard at the origin after a delay of 0.1 seconds (2 × 17/340 seconds). The strength of an echo depends on room contents and dimensions. Strength is specified in dB sound pressure level relative to the directly transmitted wave.

Psychologists often use a procedure where a speaker hears the sound of his or her voice after a delay (commonly called delayed auditory feedback, DAF, which is discussed further in see section 3.1). It is often assumed that the delayed signal is the only sound the speaker hears. Although the voice may be heavily attenuated, it is unlikely that the speaker does not hear any of the direct voice (i.e. at zero delay). Thus the speaker hears a mixture of sound with no delay and after one or more echo.

2.2 Frequency

Rooms are resonant structures though the material in the room damps these resonances to different extents. Each room has its particular frequency response. Sounds are filtered in their passage through a room space (some frequencies pass easily into the room and others do not). For speakers using amplification signals, the equipment itself can alter the frequency content.

2.3 Intensity

Effects such as echoes, discussed earlier, and amplifiers affect the intensity of any perceived or produced sound. A sound traveling directly from its source to a receiver will be attenuated as distance increases, which will be affected by the transmission medium. In real environments, sound sources will enter environments where there may be other noises (including echoes from past sounds). Speech production is affected when there are sounds in the environment other than that which the speaker makes. These extraneous sounds disrupt the speaker’s intensity control. Section 3.3 describes how a speaker’s vocal intensity depends on whether they are speaking while hearing their own speech or other noises. The behavior of a reception device (including a listener) that needs to detect or identify a speech sound will be affected when there are extraneous sound sources (in psychoacoustics, the extra sounds are said to mask the signal; see section 4.1). Another example of how extraneous sounds affect listeners is the cocktail party phenomenon where a listener needs to distinguish one voice so as to be able to follow a conversation. Extraneous sounds can be other voices or non-speech noises.

3. How environments affect speech production

The effects environments have on speech production are considered before the effects on perception. This is because if the speaker is present in the environment, listening performance will be affected by how speech is changed by the environment as well as by the way the environment affects listening. The listener will receive the altered sound the speaker makes and the environment will affect processing by the listener too.

During the 1950s, the rapid growth in phone use raised interest in how hearing a delayed sound affected speech control ( CCITT, 1989a , 1989b ). Speaking along with a delayed version of the voice (DAF) is an on-going problem in telephony with the introduction of cellular phones and satellite technology. Many of the findings have relevance for speaking in rooms with echo. It was found that speaking along with a delayed version of the voice (DAF) caused drawling (usually on the medial vowels), led to a Lombard effect (increased voice level), while pitch became monotone, speech errors arose and messages took longer to complete than messages produced in normal listening conditions ( Fairbanks, 1955 ). It should be noted that in addition to time alterations, telephones can transmit a limited range of frequencies, and the voice can be masked by noise on the equipment.

One question that arises is whether the delayed sound during DAF has to be speech to produce the disruptions to fluent speakers’ speech? Howell and Archer (1984) addressed this question by transforming speech into a noise that had the same temporal structure as speech, but none of the phonetic content. Then they delayed the noise sound and compared performance of this with performance under standard DAF. The two conditions produced equivalent disruption over a range of delays. This suggests that the DAF signal does not need to be a speech sound to affect control in the same way as observed under DAF. It appears from these results that speech does not go through the speech comprehension system where its message content is determined and which is then used as feedback to the linguistic processes. The disruption could arise instead if asynchronous inputs affect operation of lower level mechanisms involved in motor control.

Not all speakers are adversely affected by DAF. For instance, fluent speakers vary in their susceptibility to DAF. Howell and Archer (1984) went on to show that susceptibility depended on loudness of the voice, which determined level of feedback (in their experiments feedback could be speech or non-speech noises). A second surprising finding was that the fluency of people who stutter improved when they were played DAF. Researchers who investigated the fluency-enhancing effects of DAF on people who stutter in the 1950s and 1960s include Nessel (1958) , Soderberg (1960) , Chase et al., (1961) , Lotzmann (1961) , Neelley (1961) , Goldiamond (1965) , Ham and Steer (1967) and Curlee and Perkins (1969) .

A further important claim that was made at this time that was embraced by several eminent workers was that DAF produces similar effects in fluent speakers to those that people who stutter ordinarily experience - in particular drawling and speech errors. This prompted Lee (1951) to refer to DAF as a form of ‘simulated’ stutter. In an extension of this point of view, Cherry and Sayers (1956) used DAF as a way of simulating stuttering in fluent speakers to establish the basis of the problem. They generated two different sources of sound that are heard whilst speaking normally (the sound transmitted over air and that transmitted through bone). They then examined separately which of these ‘feedback’ components led to increased stuttering rates in fluent speakers when each of them was delayed. The bone-conducted component seemed to be particularly effective in increasing ‘simulated’ stuttering; and they proposed that this source of feedback also led to the problem in speakers who stutter. They then designed a therapy that involved playing noise to speakers who stutter that was intended to mask out the problematic bone-conducted component of vocal ‘feedback’. They reported that fluency improved when the voice was masked in this way. Although there is some disagreement about whether speakers who stutter have problems processing bone-conducted sounds ( Howell & Powell, 1984 ), the effects of masking sounds on the fluency of speakers who stutter has not been disputed. In summary, altering speech timing affects the behavior of fluent speakers adversely but can improve the speech of speakers who stutter.

3.2 Frequency

There are relatively few studies on what effects altering the frequency content of speech has on speech control which is unfortunate as those that there are can be extrapolated to environments that affect the frequency content of sound. Early studies examined the effect of filtering speech ( Garber & Moller, 1979 ). Elman (1981) examined the effects of shifting the speech spectrum (frequency shifted feedback, FSF) on voice pitch, and reported that speakers partially compensate for these shifts. That is, speakers shifted their voice pitch in the opposite direction to the shift made by the experimenter. Subsequent studies have shown that FSF also has little effect on voice level ( Howell, 1990 ). The incomplete compensation for shifts in frequency of voice pitch in fluent speakers has also been confirmed ( Burnett et al., 1997 ), as well as being reported for upward shifts in speakers who stutter ( Natke et al., 2001 ) although no compensation occurs for downward shifts in people who stutter ( Natke et al., 2001 ).

Howell et al. (1987) created a frequency-shifted version of the speaker’s voice that was synchronous with the speaker’s voice, and assessed its effects on speakers who stutter. These authors used a speed-changing method (that produces a frequency shift in the same way that playing a tape recorder at different speeds does). The method they developed produces a virtually synchronous frequency shift. Other features to note about FSF are that the signal level in the shifted version varies with speech level (when speakers produce low intensity sounds, the FSF is also low in intensity, and vice versa). Also, no sound occurs when the speaker is silent (the latter is a feature that is shared with the Edinburgh masker). The two preceding factors limit the noise dose the speaker receives.

The effects on fluency of this (almost real-time) alteration was a marked improvement in fluency in people who stutter even when speakers were instructed to speak at normal rate. The first study reported by Howell et al. (1987) showed that FSF resulted in more fluent speech than DAF or a portable device called the Edinburgh masker ( Dewar et al., 1979 ). Later studies have argued that FSF does not produce speech that is superior to DAF speech at short delays ( Kalinowski et al., 1993 ; Macleod et al., 1995 ). However, these studies have used fast Fourier transform (FFT) techniques to produce frequency shifts. FFT techniques produce significant delays that are somewhat variable ( Howell & Sackin, 2002 ). Therefore, the studies that claim FSF has the same effect on fluency as DAF have compared FSF plus a short delay, with short-delay DAF. Thus the delay they include under FSF may account for why these studies failed to find a difference between it and DAF, whereas Howell et al. (1987) did. Kalinowski’s group claims the paucity of secondary effects on aspects of speech control other than fluency makes FSF acoustically ‘invisible’ on speakers who stutter (and they maintain that the same applies to short-duration DAF). They also claim that the minimal changes in speech control under these two forms of altered sound lead speakers to produce fluent, or near fluent, speech ( Kalinowski & Dayalu, 2002 ).

A second important point about the Howell et al. (1987) study was that, as mentioned, the effects on fluency were observed even though speakers were told to speak at a normal rate. Therefore, to the extent to which they obeyed instructions, the effects of FSF seem to be independent of rate. This argues against Costello-Ingham’s (1993) view that altered feedback techniques (DAF in particular) work on people who stutter because they slow overall speech rate. Direct tests of whether fluency-enhancing effects occur when speech rate is varied were made by Kalinowski et al. (1996) for DAF, and by Hargrave et al. (1994) , and Natke et al. (2001) for FSF. These studies reported that fluency was enhanced whether or not rate was slow (relative to normal speaking conditions). One proviso about the Kalinowski studies is that a global measure of speech rate was taken. It is possible for speakers to speed up global (mean) speech rate while, at the same time, reducing rate locally within an utterance. See Howell and Sackin (2000) for an empirical study that shows fluent speakers display local slowing in singing and local and global slowing under FSF. Until local measures are taken under FSF in people who stutter, it cannot be firmly concluded whether fluency changes are associated with rate change or not, since the speakers might have increased global rate but reduced local rate around the points where disfluencies would have occurred ( Howell & Sackin, 2000 ).

In Howell et al.’s (1987) fourth experiment, the effects of presenting FSF at sound onset only (where speakers who stutter have most problems) were compared with those in continuous FSF speech. The effects on fluency did not differ significantly between the two conditions, suggesting that having FSF at sound onset only was as effective as having it on throughout the utterance. This shows that it may be possible to get as much enhancement in fluency when alteration is made to selected areas in an utterance as opposed for when alteration is made to the whole utterance.

Another factor of interest is that Kalinowski’s group has investigated how FSF operates in more natural environments such as over the telephone ( Zimmerman, et al., 1997 ), or when speakers have to speak in front of audiences ( Armson et al., 1997 ). They reported that, in both these environments, there are marked improvements in fluency and, therefore, that these procedures may operate in natural environments.

3.3 Intensity

Speaking is affected when the voice is amplified ( Fletcher et al., 1918 ) or when noise is present ( Lombard, 1911 ). Laboratory studies have shown that when voice level is amplified, speakers reduce voice level and when voice level is reduced, they increase it (called the Fletcher effect). Conversely, when noise level increases, speakers increase their voice level and when noise level reduces, speakers reduce their voice level (called the Lombard effect). It is possible that these compensations could be the result of a negative feedback mechanism for regulating voice level. If speakers need to hear their voice to control it but cannot do so, either because noise level is high or voice level is low, they compensate by increasing level. Speakers would compensate in the opposite way if their speech is too loud (low noise level or when the voice is amplified). Note, however, that explanations other than a feedback account, are also possible. For instance, Lane and Tranel (1971) discuss the view that voice level changes are made so that the audience, rather than the speaker himself or herself, does not receive speech at too high or too low a level.

Speakers who stutter change their voice level in the same direction as fluent speakers when noise is present and when their voice is amplified or attenuated ( Howell, 1990 ). The effects of non-speech noises on the fluency of speakers who stutter has been examined. In one imaginative study, Sutton and Chase (1961) arranged whether noise was on or off using a voice-activated relay while subjects read aloud. They compared the fluency-enhancing effects of noise that was on continuously, noise that was presented only while the speaker was speaking and noise presented only during the silent periods between speech. They found that all these conditions were equally effective. It appears from this that the operative effect is not simply masking as there is no sound to mask when noise is presented during silent periods. However, Webster and Lubker (1968) pointed out that voice-activated relays take time to operate and so some noise would have been present at the onset of words. Therefore a masking effect cannot be ruled out. Portable masking devices such as the Edinburgh masker ( Dewar et al., 1979 ) have been developed for treating stuttering.

3.4 Cognitive influences of speaking environment

Non-auditory influences can affect a speaker’s behavior too. The view that speakers can adapt their speech when they know something about the audience has been discussed in connection with Lane and Tranel’s interpretation of the Lombard effect. Another practically important example of non-auditory effects is the clear speech phenomenon. When producing clear speech, speakers can make a conscious effort about how to control their voice, overriding environmental influences. It has been shown that if speakers speak clearly, there are substantial intelligibility gains relative to conversational speech for hearing impaired individuals ( Picheny et al., 1989 ). Clear speech differs from conversational speech in a variety of ways, including speaking rate, consonant power and the occurrence of phonological phenomena ( Picheny et al., 1989 ). Speakers frequently make attempts to speak clearly in auditoria, although the influences of this have not been studied much outside the hearing impaired field. An exception is the work of Lindblom (1990) who has embodied the idea in his H and H theory that speakers place themselves on a continuum between clear and casual speech based on the perceived importance of getting the message across.

4. How environments affect speech perception

Topics were arranged in parallel ways in the two previous sections. Perceptual studies have been conducted under perceptual themes rather than parameters that have been manipulated to simulate the effects which occur in real environments. It should be borne in mind that in the case where the speaker, as well as listener, is in the same space, the sound the perceptual system is dealing with will also have been changed by the environment. In this section, a selection of the perceptual factors that affect listeners is outlined.

4.1 Masking

When there are noises (speech or non-speech) in the environment these sounds act as maskers. The effects of masking on listeners’ performance have been studied extensively and would take many volumes to describe fully. Here the important effects of masking on listeners’ performance are merely noted.

4.2 Clear speech

The studies on clear speech described in the preceding section were undertaken with the intention of establishing what benefit these would have to listeners (in the MIT group’s work, specifically what effect they would have on hearing impaired listeners). Intelligibility tests suggest around 10% more test words can be identified when speech is spoken clearly.

4.3 Location of an object in space

Speakers can localize the origin of a sound in a room. Researchers have examined cues to locales in controlled environments (not room specific) although some important influences that operate in room environments have been studied. A brief description of binaural and monaural cues is given and then some effects that operate in rooms are described.

Sound localization is a listener’s ability to identify the location or origin of a detected sound usually in a three-dimensional space (although localization has also been studied in virtual environments). Binaural cues (using both ears) are important in localization ability. The time of arrival at the two ears is different for a sound which is not directly in front of the listener because the length of the path to the near ear is less than that to the far ear. This time delay is the primary binaural cue to sound localization and is called the interaural time difference (ITD).

A secondary binaural cue is the reduction in loudness when the sound reaches the far ear. This is called the interaural intensity difference (IID). IID is frequency dependent as low frequency sounds can bend round the head. Thus IID cues operate at these frequencies whilst high frequencies are blocked by the head and never reach the far ear (IID does not operate for these frequencies). Note that these cues will only aid in localizing the sound source’s azimuth (the angle between the source and the sagittal plane), not its elevation (the angle between the source and the horizontal plane through both ears).

Monaural localization depends primarily on the filtering effects of external structures like the head, shoulders, torso, and outer ear or pinna. The sound frequencies are filtered depending on the angle from which they strike the various external structures. The main such effect arises from the pinna notch, which arises when the pinna attenuates frequencies in a narrow frequency band. The band of frequencies in the notch depends on the angle from which the sound strikes the outer ear and provides information about the direction of the source.

It has already been mentioned that sound intensity decays with increasing distance form the source. Thus intensity provides a cue to distance but generally speaking, this is not a reliable cue, because it is not known how loud the sound source is. However in the case of a familiar sound such as speech, there is an implicit knowledge of how loud the sound source should be, which enables a rough distance judgment to be made.

Echoes provide reasonable cues to the distance of a sound source, in particular because the strength of echoes does not depend on the distance of the source, while the strength of the sound that arrives directly from the sound source becomes weaker with distance. As a result, the ratio of direct-to-echo strength alters the quality of the sound. In this way consistent, although not very accurate, distance judgments are possible.

The final topic discussed is the precedence effect ( Wallach et al., 1949 ). This states that only the first of multiple identical sounds is used to determine the sound’s location. Echoes, which otherwise could cause confusion about locale, are effectively ignored by the listener’s perceptual system.

4.4 Auditory stream segregation

A large amount of work has been done on auditory stream segregation since the publication of Bregman’s (1990) book. Obviously, one cannot hope to do justice to this in a short paper like this. The main difference between this approach and classic psychoacoustics is in the emphasis placed on top-down cognitive influences. Listeners use a lot of stored information on what they know about the structure of sounds to interpret incoming sounds.

One example is the harmonic sieve model which collects together those frequency components that belong to a particular sound source ( Duifhuis et al., 1982 ). Voiced speech has a harmonic structure. The basic idea behind a harmonic sieve is that if the auditory system performs a spectral analysis and only those frequencies near to harmonics are taken, only the components from a single speaker would be obtained and other sounds would be sieved out. In this case, listeners make use of information about harmonic structure to segregate sounds.

The auditory stream segregation approach makes extensive use of Gestalt notions. Two related examples from Darwin (1984) and Nakajima et al. (2000) that involve the Gestalt notion of capture are discussed briefly. Darwin’s studies showed that a tone that starts or stops at a different time from a steady state vowel was less likely to be heard as part of that vowel than if it was simultaneous with it. In Nakajima et al.’s study, the stimuli consisted of two glides that crossed each other at a point in time (one of which started before and finished after the shorter glide). The shorter glide was continuous, but the longer one was interrupted at the crossover point. However listeners perceived this in the opposite way (the longer one was perceived as continuous and the shorter one as interrupted). This powerful illusion again points to the importance of the Gestalt grouping notions.

4.5 Cognitive influences on listeners

As with speech production, there are also cognitive influences in the environment that affect listeners. The ideas stemming form Bregman’s work include cognitive influences. The linguistic context is one factor that affects speech dysfluencies produced by fluent speakers ( Shriberg, 2001 ). Judgments about sounds are also affected by what the listener sees. One example of this is the well-known McGurk effect ( McGurk & MacDonald, 1976 ). This is an illusion in which a listener sees a video of a speaker saying the syllable /ga/ whilst hearing the syllable /ba/. The initial plosive in these sounds has different places of articulation (velar and bilabial respectively). Listeners do not report either of these sounds, but report hearing /da/ which has a place of articulation intermediate between /ga/ and /ba/. Another example is where a visual object that moves in synchrony with the sound source (e.g. a ventriloquist’s dummy) biases a sound’s judged location. The ventriloquism effect has been studied by asking for judgments about sound source location when dummy loudspeakers are visible ( Radeau & Bertelson, 1976 ).

5. Conclusion including considerations about room design

This short review does not claim to be comprehensive but, hopefully, raises some considerations about how speakers will be affected by environments with different acoustic properties, and some of the perceptual mechanisms that listeners have available to offset the deleterious effects of some of these influences. Delay and intensity are disruptive on fluent speakers, but frequency alterations less so. Speakers who stutter show similar responses to fluent speakers in these environments although the manipulations alleviate their fluency problem (FSF, DAF and masking of the voice). This shows that the way in which environments affect sound is not necessarily bad for all types of speaker.

Studies are needed which examine together the changes a speaker makes in an environment and how a listener in that same environment processes the altered speech. Speaking clearly can potentially offset poor acoustic characteristics in environments, although this needs to be checked. The precedence effect suggests that the disruptive effects of echoes can be reduced by listeners’ perceptual mechanisms. Listeners may use harmonic sieve’s to help them track a single voice in noisy environments. Besides these mechanisms that offset problems, there are cases where speakers can be misled (McGurk and ventriloquism effects).

Speech On Environment - 10 Lines, Short and Long Speech

Speech on environment.

The environment is made up of biotic and abiotic components. For the survival of humanity in peace and health, the environment must be kept clean. Environmental damage like the extinction of animals, global warming, and pollution etc is caused by human activity.

10 Line Speech On Environment

The existence and growth of all living organisms on earth, and especially in the daily lives of humans, depend critically on the environment.

Speech On Environment - 10 Lines, Short and Long Speech

We rely on the environment for our fundamental requirements.

The relationship between the environment and all living things are maintained in a healthy natural cycle.

The well-being of the environment, which supports the survival of humans, marine life, and mammals, is significantly impacted by human societies.

The world we live in is affected by deforestation, pollution, the extinction of many species, and rising temperatures.

Uncontrolled environmental exploitation is a result of an ecological disaster.

Everyone must prioritise keeping the environment clean.

One must propagate information about the value of a clean, green environment and plant more trees.

Utilising products from recycled sources is one of the finest methods to keep our environment clean.

Oil, natural gas, coal, and other resources must not be used. Instead of using finite resources, we can employ renewable resources like wind, biomass, and sunlight.

Short Speech On Environment

Our natural surroundings are referred to as our environment; life originates there. Environment has an impact on every aspect of our lives. It determines how to live and grow and develop in the right ways. Our social lives can be good or awful depending on how well our natural environment is maintained. The atmosphere in which we live has an impact on the needs that humans have for food, water, shelter, and other necessities. Between the environment and the life of people, plants, and animals, there is a balanced natural cycle. The degradation of the natural environment, which harms life on our planet, is due primarily to human society. Every human action directly impacts modern society's entire ecosystem.

Issues like urbanization, deforestation, etc., cause environmental damage. We can make a big difference with our small actions. To conserve the air we breathe, we must make an effort to use public transportation as much as feasible. We must take the proper steps to preserve our natural resources and habitat. Using renewable energy, avoiding plastic bags, planting more trees, and other measures are a few ways we may do this. Nature has so much to offer us. We must participate in programmes for sustainable development while preserving the environment and nature.

Long Speech On Environment

All living things and the habitat in which they live make up our environment. Long-lasting sustainability is a sign of a healthy environment. Everybody's life comes from it. It sets everyone's course in life and dictates how they should develop and flourish. Our environment comprises the five elements of air, water, land, fire, and sky. We have harmed the ecosystem by cutting down the massive number of trees essential to maintaining the environmental cycle, putting up huge polluting industries, hunting and poaching animals that put them in danger, and other things.

Environmental Issues

These include rapid population expansion, decreasing natural resources, disappearing species, salinization in Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East, shrinking wetlands and forests, soil erosion, and coral reef destruction. Other problems include a decline in biodiversity, the quick extinction of some significant animal species, the collapse of fisheries, an increase in air and water pollution, an increase in global temperature, a thinning of the ozone layer, and the degradation of rivers, seas, and underground resources.

The dangerous chemical emissions and hazardous waste discharge into primary water resources like the Yamuna, Ganga, and other rivers are two of the many adverse effects that increasing industry has on the environment. The issue of an environment that is constantly changing (in a negative way) affects all nations and all levels of government because we are all to blame for this environment's negative decline. Moreover, we are all responsible for preserving our natural environment to ensure life's continued health. Protecting the environment is of utmost importance for today's and tomorrow's generations of humans.

We still need to adapt to our surroundings, despite the profound changes brought about by science and technology regarding how we interact with the natural world. Environment is a part of human society. In an ecosystem where they are interdependent, it is essential to remember that humans are, first and foremost, animals who share a habitat with other animal species. It is up to us to protect the planet and our ecosystem so that people can live here in peace and health.

Our Contribution

The best way to preserve the environment is to educate people about the benefits of the ecosystem and the effects that environmental deterioration will have on us. A significant cause for concern is the earth's warming due to human activity. As the world grows hotter, ice melts, and water levels rise, diseases, famine, and flooding will become serious issues this century if nothing is done. Significant portions of agricultural land will be flooded.

On an individual level, we can stop using plastic straws and bags. We can carry fabric bags and other reusable bags with us while we go shopping. Using palm oil, we can use less merchandise that contributes to extensive deforestation. As large-scale farming produces massive CO2 from livestock emissions and maintenance, consuming less meat will help us leave a smaller carbon footprint. If we all decide to protect the environment, we can leave behind a healthy environment for the next generation.

Writing a speech

Topic outline.

The purpose of a speech is often to inform or persuade an audience.

Speeches are usually written to be spoken directly to an audience and can be used to entertain, influencing the listeners that the viewpoint of the speaker is correct.

Speeches can also be used to encourage the audience to take action or to change their behaviour in some way; for example, to join a particular school club or society, or to recycle more.

The ways you use language and vocabulary when writing the words of a speech will depend on the audience and the purpose you are writing for; for example, in a speech to a group of teachers and parents giving your views on a recent proposal, formal language is most appropriate.

  • think about the audience that the speech is for  – are you giving your speech to a group of people you know, or do not know, or a mixture of both? If you know your audience well, you may be able to relax a little, but a speech is still a formal kind of talk and would usually not include slang
  • whether your audience are likely to disagree with what you say – you will need to consider any possible objections and deal with them. Use language carefully to make objections seem less significant; for example, using phrases like ‘A few people may still think, however’
  • the reason you are giving this speech and how you feel about this topic  – try to imagine the words of your speech as you would speak them out loud. Your tone of voice must match your message, so choose words that appeal to the emotions of your listeners. Focus on what you want your audience to know and feel by the end of your speech
  • how to engage your listeners  – f or example, you might use inclusive words or phrases like ‘we’, ‘all of us’ and ‘our’ to make your listeners feel that you are all on the same side.
  • Plan where you want to finish your speech and how you will get there before you start writing – t h e structure of a speech is usually in three parts. For example:
  • An opening that grabs your audience's attention and makes the overall topic of your speech clear  – for example, pose a question to the audience where you can predict the answer.
  • A well-structured, supported and developed argument –  for example, to support your argument you might use real life examples or anecdotes.
  • A powerful conclusion  –  for example, group your final words or ideas in threes to help make them memorable or end with a thought- provoking question or image and thank your audience for listening.
  • Organise your ideas into paragraphs as appropriate – this will help you to develop and support your points convincingly, to build your argument and/or offer a full explanation of a particular point of view.
  • S how the connectio ns between ideas in sentences and paragraphs  –  where a new point or idea follows on from what you have already said you might use linking words or phrases such as, ‘in addition’, ‘likewise’ or ‘similarly’.

Speech on World Environment Day for Students and Children

Short speech on world environment day.

World Environment Day is celebrated every year on June 5 globally. It is a day on which we spread awareness about the environment and the need to conserve it. Moreover, it is essential to advocate for a greener environment and conservation of nature. It is quite simple as when we conserve the environment today, the future generations will be able to lead a healthier life. We cannot be so selfish and use up all the resources for ourselves. World Environment Day is the perfect opportunity to make people aware of the issues we are facing and how one can contribute to saving it. Thus, it is quite important in its own way.

speech on world environment day

Importance of World Environment Day

World Environment Day reminds us to strengthen the world and ensure that nature is preserved at all costs. It throws light on the causes which are causing serious harm to our environment. For instance, industries and factories are contributing largely to pollution. They are deteriorating the quality of air that we breathe and the water we consume.

Thus, this day serves as an eye-opener for many citizens who aren’t aware of all this. In other words, it spreads awareness amongst the common people which the environment is facing right now. Moreover, it also encourages the public from different societies and communities to take active participation in celebrating the day.

Further, it also urges them to become active agents in developing environmental safety methods. Not just that, it also encourages everyone to keep their nearby surroundings safe and clean so that everyone can have a cleaner, greener and more prosperous future.

Every Little Deed Matters

On the occasion of World Environment Day, it is essential for all to realize that every little deed matters when it comes to saving the environment. No matter how small a step you are taking to lead a greener lifestyle, it does make a difference. Because, if everyone starts doing little deeds one by one, it will turn into something big. As the saying goes every drop makes an ocean, it is true in this case as well.

As there are a lot of diseases that originate due to unhygienic living conditions and dirty water, we must begin there. For instance, when water remains stagnant or unclean for long, various insects and bacteria start growing there. This results in deadly diseases like Malaria, Dengue and more. So, we must make sure to cover the tanks, pots, coolers and more which may become a breeding ground for such insects and diseases.

Similarly, we have to talk about the issues of garbage disposal. Especially in our country, people litter around everywhere. It is essential to firstly dispose of waste properly and also segregate the wet and dry waste accordingly.

These little deeds will make you realize how wholesome your life will become. It is not always about the money and luxury, the little fulfilling things and change in habits can also prove to be very effective.

Thus, we have the World Environment Day which serves as a reminder to protect the environment at all costs. All the resources of nature from forests to oceans and soil to air, we must conserve.

To sum it up, always remember that the gifts and blessings which nature endows on us are priceless. It is rather essential to conserve them all for a better future and life for all. Always remember that small steps will help you reach your goal.

Speech on Clean Environment

You live in an environment, right? It’s everything around you – the air you breathe, the water you drink, and the ground you walk on. Now, imagine if all these were clean and free from pollution.

A clean environment is not just nice to have, it’s a must. It’s vital for your health, happiness, and overall well-being.

1-minute Speech on Clean Environment

Dear friends,

A clean environment is like a dream home. It’s where we feel happy, healthy, and safe. Imagine living in a place where the air is fresh, the water is clear, and trees surround us. That’s what a clean environment feels like. But, we need to work hard to keep it that way.

We all know how important trees are. They give us shade, fruits, and most importantly, clean air. They are like big, green, air-cleaning machines. So, let’s promise to plant more trees and take care of the ones we have.

Next, let’s talk about garbage. We all create it, but we need to manage it better. Throwing it here and there makes our surroundings dirty and unhealthy. It’s like inviting illness to our homes. We can change this by using dustbins and recycling as much as we can.

Water is life. But dirty water can harm us. So, let’s keep our rivers, lakes, and oceans clean. Let’s not throw waste into them. Instead, let’s treat our waste water so that it doesn’t harm our water bodies.

Air is what keeps us alive. But, if we keep on polluting it, it will make us sick. We can keep our air clean by using less vehicles, and saying no to firecrackers.

Friends, a clean environment is not just a gift to us, but also to our future generations. Just like we enjoy a clean home, let’s make sure they get a clean world. Let’s make a promise today to keep our environment clean. It’s not difficult. We just need to care a little more. Let’s start today. Thank you.

2-minute Speech on Clean Environment

Ladies and Gentlemen,

A clean environment is like a big, happy family. It’s a place where the air is fresh, the water is clear, and the trees are green. It’s a place where birds sing, flowers bloom, and children play. It’s a place where we all can live happily and healthily. But, sadly, our environment is not as clean as it should be.

Let’s talk about air first. When we breathe in dirty air, it’s like eating spoiled food. It can make us sick. It can give us coughs and colds. It can even make it hard for us to breathe. And just like us, animals and plants also need clean air to live. Dirty air can make them sick too. So, we need to keep our air clean. We can do this by not burning trash, not smoking, and not using too many cars.

Now, let’s talk about water. Clean water is like a magic potion. It can quench our thirst. It can clean our bodies. It can help plants grow. But dirty water can’t do these things. It can make us sick. It can kill plants and animals. So, we need to keep our water clean. We can do this by not throwing trash in rivers and lakes, not wasting water, and not using harmful chemicals.

Next, let’s talk about land. Clean land is like a comfy bed. It’s a place where we can build our homes. It’s a place where plants can grow. But dirty land can’t be a home or a bed. It can’t grow plants. So, we need to keep our land clean. We can do this by not littering, not cutting down too many trees, and not using harmful pesticides.

Lastly, let’s talk about noise. A quiet environment is like a peaceful sleep. It helps us relax. It helps us think. But a noisy environment can’t do these things. It can make us stressed. It can make it hard for us to sleep or study. So, we need to keep our environment quiet. We can do this by not making too much noise, not playing loud music, and not honking our car horns too much.

In conclusion, a clean environment is not just about clean air, water, and land. It’s also about quiet surroundings. It’s about living in a place where we can breathe easily, drink safely, eat healthily, sleep peacefully, and think clearly. It’s about living in a place where we can be happy and healthy. Let’s work together to keep our environment clean. Let’s make our big, happy family even bigger and happier. Thank you.

English Summary

1 Minute Speech on the Importance of the Environment In English

A very good morning to one and all present here. Today, I will be giving a short speech on the topic of the importance of the environment.

Google defines the environment to be “the surroundings or conditions in which a person, animal, or plant lives or operates.” It, in fact, comprises of both living and non-living elements within it.

Every single one of us here would surely have come across the various concerns that have been raised for the protection of the environment. However, have we ever paused to think why our environment is important and ought to be saved?

Firstly, without the environment, there would be no renewable and non-renewable resources our lives are impossible without. Secondly, the environment includes air, water, sunlight, and soil- which are crucial for our very existence. Again, our very food, be it plants or animals or cereals or pulses, will be non-existent in the absence of the environment!

The environment is thus what sustains life.

Speech on Environmental Pollution

Environmental pollution is an issue of grave concern. Day by day, the condition is getting worse, and it’s high time to take action. Read the following article, collect maximum ideas, and develop a comprehensive speech about pollution in our environment – one of the interesting speech topics for kids .

Table of Contents

Environmental pollution speech in english, two-minute speech on environmental pollution, one-minute speech on environmental pollution, top quotes to use in a speech on environmental pollution, frequently asked questions on environmental pollution, sample speeches on environmental pollution.

A couple of sample speeches are given below. Go through them and utilise the resource to prepare a short speech on pollution.

What is pollution? Pollution can be defined as the introduction of unwanted harmful substances into the earth that brings adverse effects on the environment and living organisms. It destroys the ecological balance. There are mainly six types of environmental pollution and they are air pollution, water pollution, soil pollution, noise pollution, thermal pollution, and radioactive pollution.

Air pollution can be defined as the mixing of external harmful gases and particles in the atmosphere. It is caused by the release of contaminants like toxic gases, chemicals, and other particulate matter. The impact of air pollution can be severe; it varies from person to person. Air pollution impoverishes our lives by causing global warming, acid rain, ozone depletion and increasing the risk of cancer, respiratory diseases, skin diseases, etc.

Water pollution is caused by the illogical waste management of human beings. Contaminants are introduced into the water bodies by human activities like disposing of untreated industrial sewages, agricultural runoffs with fertilisers and pesticides, dumping of solid wastes, etc. Water pollution is a great threat to marine life. Disrupting marine life affects our food cycle and damages our ecosystem.

The contamination of soil due to the presence of chemicals or other harmful particles is called soil pollution. It, directly and indirectly, affects our lives. Excessive use of chemicals like pesticides and fertilisers for agricultural production, mining, improper waste disposal, and acid rain are some of the major causes of soil pollution. As a result of soil pollution, the soil loses its fertility and deteriorates natural vegetation. It adversely affects the organisms residing in the soil, degrades agricultural productivity, and even results in famine.

Noise pollution is caused by the excessive amounts of noise in our environment. Noise pollution is generally man-made, and it badly affects the natural balance of our ecosystem. Any sound which is over 85 decibels is harmful to human health. Due to globalisation and industrialisation, the level of noise pollution in our environment has increased drastically. Some of the main contributors to noise pollution are machinery used in industries, noise emitted by vehicles, sounds produced during construction work, noise during public festivals and social events, etc. Noise pollution has become a major issue for many developed and developing nations. As a consequence, people are facing sleeping disorders, hearing loss, hypertension, stress-related illnesses, etc.

Thermal pollution is caused by the sudden increase or decrease of the temperature of a natural body of water. Industrial machinery and power plants are the major contributors to thermal pollution. For the process of cooling machinery, water from nature is collected and used. But after this mechanism, the temperature of the water gets altered. By pumping back the water, the thermal balance of the natural source of water becomes affected and results in thermal pollution. It changes the oxygen level and destroys ecosystems.

The pollution caused by the release of radioactive substances into the environment during nuclear explosions, nuclear weapon production and decommissioning, mining of radioactive ores, and disposal of radioactive wastes are called radioactive pollution.

All this pollution has had a great impact on our lives. Many environmental catastrophes like global warming, acid rain, famine, drought, earthquakes, etc., are the returns given to us by earth for our greed. If we continue to pollute, then be ready to face the end.

Environmental pollution is one of the most troubling global issues. It is caused by the harmful effect of pollutants that are discharged into the environment by the irrational actions of human beings. The actions of such pollutants badly affect our environment and transform it into an unhealthy place to live. Environmental pollution can be stated as the unfavourable alteration of our environment with severe long term consequences. Improper waste management, exploitation of natural resources, and urban-industrial technological revolutions are considered some of the main causes for environmental pollution.

Environmental pollution is a global issue, and it is not at all a new term to any of us. The phenomenon has been here for many decades, but the solution still remains obscure. The wheel of time is spinning over human beings and nature. Nature will always find its way to survive, and it’s our only hope. Like the words of John James Audubon, “A true conservationist is a man who knows that his fathers do not give the world, but borrowed from his children”, let’s realise that the conservation of our environment is never a choice but an urgency for our future.

The aftereffects of environmental pollution are intolerable. It results in the loss of vegetation, irregular functioning of the ecosystem, loss of biodiversity, and poses a threat to human life. Any pollution that brings undesirable changes to the environment can be listed as environmental pollution. The types of pollution vary depending on the nature and the component on which the pollutant marks its effect.

Nitrogen oxide, sulphur oxide, mercury, CFC (Chlorofluorocarbon), particulate matter, and volatile organic compounds are some of the harmful pollutants that cause environmental pollution.

  • “Environmental pollution is an incurable disease. It can only be prevented.” – Barry Commoner.
  • “Sooner or later, we will have to recognise that the Earth has rights, too, to live without pollution. What mankind must know is that human beings cannot live without Mother Earth, but the planet can live without humans.” – Evo Morales.
  • “Where the quality of life goes down for the environment, the quality of life goes down for humans.” – George Holland.
  • “Earth provides enough to satisfy every man’s needs, but not every man’s greed.” – Mahatma Gandhi.
  • “The only way forward, if we are going to improve the quality of the environment, is to get everybody involved.” – Richard Rogers.
  • “Water and air, the two essential fluids on which all life depends, have become global garbage cans.” – Jacques Yves Cousteau.
  • “Pollution is nothing but the resources we are not harvesting. We allow them to be dispersed because we’ve been ignorant of their value.” – R. Buckminster Fuller.
  • “Pollution is a serious one: water pollution, air pollution, and then solid hazardous waste pollution. And then, beyond that, we also have the resources issue. Not just water resources but other natural resources, the mining resources being consumed, and the destruction of our ecosystem.” – Ma Jun.
  • “We abuse land because we regard it as a commodity belonging to us. When we see land as a community to which we belong, we may begin to use it with love and respect.” – Aldo Leopold.
  • “The ecological crisis is doing what no other crisis in history has ever done — challenging us to a realisation of a new humanity.” – Jean Houston.

What is environmental pollution, and what are the main pollutants?

Environmental pollution can be stated as the unfavourable alteration of our environment with severe long term consequences. It is caused by the harmful effect of pollutants that are discharged into the environment by the irrational actions of human beings. Any pollution that brings undesirable changes to the environment can be listed as environmental pollution. Nitrogen oxide, sulphur oxide, mercury, CFC (Chlorofluorocarbon), particulate matter, and volatile organic compounds are some of the harmful pollutants that cause environmental pollution.

Doctors’ Covid-19 Speech Suit Rendered Moot by California Repeal

By Mary Anne Pazanowski

Mary Anne Pazanowski

California doctors can no longer pursue a lawsuit challenging a now-repealed law that threatened them with professional sanctions for spreading false information about Covid-19.

Claims that AB 2098 violated doctors’ free speech rights under the First Amendment are moot, Judge William B. Shubb, of the US District Court for the Eastern District of California, said Tuesday. Shubb dismissed the lawsuit, saying the plaintiff doctors hadn’t shown that there’s a reasonable expectation that state lawmakers will reenact it or adopt a similar new provision.

Shubb cited McDonald v. Lawson in his ruling. There, the US Court of Appeals for the Ninth ...
