A user persona is a semi-fictional character based on psychographic and demographic data from people who use websites and products similar to your own. Observational research involves taking notes while watching someone use your product (or a similar product).

Overt vs. covert observation

Overt observation involves asking customers if they’ll let you watch them use your product. This method is often used for user testing and it provides a great opportunity for collecting live product or customer feedback .

Covert observation means studying users ‘in the wild’ without them knowing. This method works well if you sell a type of product that people use regularly, and it offers the purest observational data because people often behave differently when they know they’re being watched.

Record an entry in your field notes, along with a timestamp, each time an action or event occurs.

Make note of the users' workflow, capturing the ‘what,’ ‘why,’ and ‘for whom’ of each action.

Don’t record identifiable video or audio data without consent. If recording people using your product is helpful for achieving your research goal, make sure all participants are informed and agree to the terms.

Don’t forget to explain why you’d like to observe them (for overt observation). People are more likely to cooperate if you tell them you want to improve the product.

How Smallpdf did it: here’s how Smallpdf observed two different user personas both covertly and overtly.

Observing students (covert): Kristina Wagner, Principle Product Manager at Smallpdf, went to cafes and libraries at two local universities and waited until she saw students doing PDF-related activities. Then she watched and took notes from a distance. One thing that struck her was the difference between how students self-reported their activities vs. how they behaved (i.e, the self-reporting bias). Students, she found, spent hours talking, listening to music, or simply staring at a blank screen rather than working. When she did find students who were working, she recorded the task they were performing and the software they were using (if she recognized it).

Observing administrative assistants (overt): Kristina sent emails to admins explaining that she’d like to observe them at work, and she asked those who agreed to try to batch their PDF work for her observation day. While watching admins work, she learned that they frequently needed to scan documents into PDF-format and then convert those PDFs into Word docs. By observing the challenges admins faced, Smallpdf knew which products to target for improvement.

3. Conduct individual interviews

Interviews are one-on-one conversations with members of your target market. They allow you to dig deep and explore their concerns, which can lead to all sorts of revelations.

Listen more, talk less. Be curious.

Act like a journalist, not a salesperson. Rather than trying to talk your company up, ask people about their lives, their needs, their frustrations, and how a product like yours could help.

Ask "why?" so you can dig deeper. Get into the specifics and learn about their past behavior.

Avoid asking leading questions , which reveal bias on your part and pushes respondents to answer in a certain direction (e.g. “Have you taken advantage of the amazing new features we just released?).

Don't ask loaded questions , which sneak in an assumption which, if untrue, would make it impossible to answer honestly. For example, we can’t ask you, “What did you find most useful about this article?” without asking whether you found the article useful in the first place.

Be cautious when asking opinions about the future (or predictions of future behavior). Studies suggest that people aren’t very good at predicting their future behavior. This is due to several cognitive biases, from the misguided exceptionalism bias (we’re good at guessing what others will do, but we somehow think we’re different), to the optimism bias (which makes us see things with rose-colored glasses), to the ‘illusion of control’ (which makes us forget the role of randomness in future events).

How Smallpdf did it: Kristina explored her teacher user persona by speaking with university professors at a local graduate school. She learned that the school was mostly paperless and rarely used PDFs, so for the sake of time, she moved on to the admins.

Interviews are one-on-one conversations with members of your target market. Nothing beats a face-to-face interview for diving deep (and reading non-verbal cues), but if an in-person meeting isn’t possible, video conferencing is a solid second choice.

4. Observation: the most powerful

During a customer observation session, someone from the company takes notes while they watch an ideal user engage with their product (or a similar product from a competitor).

What makes observation so clever and powerful?

‘Fly-on-the-wall’ observation is a great alternative to focus groups. It’s not only less expensive, but you’ll see people interact with your product in a natural setting without influencing each other. The only downside is that you can’t get inside their heads, so observation still isn't a recommended replacement for customer surveys and interviews.

The following questions will help you get to know your users on a deeper level when you interview them. They’re general questions, of course, so don’t be afraid to make them your own.

1. Who are you and what do you do?

How you ask this question, and what you want to know, will vary depending on your business model (e.g. business-to-business marketing is usually more focused on someone’s profession than business-to-consumer marketing).

It’s a great question to start with, and it’ll help you understand what’s relevant about your user demographics (age, race, gender, profession, education, etc.), but it’s not the be-all-end-all of market research. The more specific questions come later.

2. What does your day look like?

This question helps you understand your users’ day-to-day life and the challenges they face. It will help you gain empathy for them, and you may stumble across something relevant to their buying habits.

3. Do you ever purchase [product/service type]?

This is a ‘yes or no’ question. A ‘yes’ will lead you to the next question.

4. What problem were you trying to solve or what goal were you trying to achieve?

This question strikes to the core of what someone’s trying to accomplish and why they might be willing to pay for your solution.

5. Take me back to the day when you first decided you needed to solve this kind of problem or achieve this goal.

This is the golden question, and it comes from Adele Revella, Founder and CEO of Buyer Persona Institute . It helps you get in the heads of your users and figure out what they were thinking the day they decided to spend money to solve a problem.

If you take your time with this question, digging deeper where it makes sense, you should be able to answer all the relevant information you need to understand their perspective.

Not to buy my product, that’s not the day. We want to go back to the day that when you thought it was urgent and compelling to go spend money to solve a particular problem or achieve a goal. This question isn’t just a nice way to wrap it up—it might just give participants the opportunity they need to tell you something you really need to know.

However, researching just one of those areas can make you more intuitive to who your buyers are and how to deliver value that no other business is offering them right now.

How? Consider these two things:

  • Your competitors also have experienced individuals in the industry and a customer base. It‘s very possible that your immediate resources are, in many ways, equal to those of your competition’s immediate resources. Seeking a larger sample size for answers can provide a better edge.
  • Your customers don't represent the attitudes of an entire market. They represent the attitudes of the part of the market that is already drawn to your brand.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration is moving toward reclassifying marijuana as a less dangerous drug. The Justice Department proposal would recognize the medical uses of cannabis , but wouldn’t legalize it for recreational use.

The proposal would move marijuana from the “Schedule I” group to the less tightly regulated “Schedule III.”

So what does that mean, and what are the implications?

WHAT HAS ACTUALLY CHANGED? WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?

Technically, nothing yet. The proposal must be reviewed by the White House Office of Management and Budget, and then undergo a public-comment period and review from an administrative judge, a potentially lengthy process.

Still, the switch is considered “paradigm-shifting, and it’s very exciting,” Vince Sliwoski, a Portland, Oregon-based cannabis and psychedelics attorney who runs well-known legal blogs on those topics, told The Associated Press when the federal Health and Human Services Department recommended the change.

“I can’t emphasize enough how big of news it is,” he said.

It came after President Joe Biden asked both HHS and the attorney general, who oversees the DEA, last year to review how marijuana was classified. Schedule I put it on par, legally, with heroin, LSD, quaaludes and ecstasy, among others.

Biden, a Democrat, supports legalizing medical marijuana for use “where appropriate, consistent with medical and scientific evidence,” White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said Thursday. “That is why it is important for this independent review to go through.”

IF MARIJUANA GETS RECLASSIFIED, WOULD IT LEGALIZE RECREATIONAL CANNABIS NATIONWIDE?

AP correspondent Haya Panjwani reports on a proposal for the federal government to reclassify marijuana in what would be a historic shift that could have wide ripple effects across the country.

No. Schedule III drugs — which include ketamine, anabolic steroids and some acetaminophen-codeine combinations — are still controlled substances.

They’re subject to various rules that allow for some medical uses, and for federal criminal prosecution of anyone who traffics in the drugs without permission.

No changes are expected to the medical marijuana programs now licensed in 38 states or the legal recreational cannabis markets in 23 states, but it’s unlikely they would meet the federal production, record-keeping, prescribing and other requirements for Schedule III drugs.

There haven’t been many federal prosecutions for simply possessing marijuana in recent years, even under marijuana’s current Schedule I status, but the reclassification wouldn’t have an immediate impact on people already in the criminal justice system.

“Put simple, this move from Schedule I to Schedule III is not getting people out of jail,” said David Culver, senior vice president of public affairs at the U.S. Cannabis Council.

But rescheduling in itself would have some impact, particularly on research and marijuana business taxes.

WHAT WOULD THIS MEAN FOR RESEARCH?

Because marijuana is on Schedule I, it’s been very difficult to conduct authorized clinical studies that involve administering the drug. That has created something of a Catch-22: calls for more research, but barriers to doing it. (Scientists sometimes rely instead on people’s own reports of their marijuana use.)

Schedule III drugs are easier to study, though the reclassification wouldn’t immediately reverse all barriers to study.

“It’s going to be really confusing for a long time,” said Ziva Cooper, director of the University of California, Los Angeles Center for Cannabis and Cannabinoids. “When the dust has settled, I don’t know how many years from now, research will be easier.”

Among the unknowns: whether researchers will be able to study marijuana from state-licensed dispensaries and how the federal Food and Drug Administration might oversee that.

Some researchers are optimistic.

“Reducing the schedule to schedule 3 will open up the door for us to be able to conduct research with human subjects with cannabis,” said Susan Ferguson, director of University of Washington’s Addictions, Drug & Alcohol Institute in Seattle.

WHAT ABOUT TAXES (AND BANKING)?

Under the federal tax code, businesses involved in “trafficking” in marijuana or any other Schedule I or II drug can’t deduct rent, payroll or various other expenses that other businesses can write off. (Yes, at least some cannabis businesses, particularly state-licensed ones, do pay taxes to the federal government, despite its prohibition on marijuana.) Industry groups say the tax rate often ends up at 70% or more.

The deduction rule doesn’t apply to Schedule III drugs, so the proposed change would cut cannabis companies’ taxes substantially.

They say it would treat them like other industries and help them compete against illegal competitors that are frustrating licensees and officials in places such as New York .

“You’re going to make these state-legal programs stronger,” says Adam Goers, of The Cannabist Company, formerly Columbia Care. He co-chairs a coalition of corporate and other players that’s pushing for rescheduling.

It could also mean more cannabis promotion and advertising if those costs could be deducted, according to Beau Kilmer, co-director of the RAND Drug Policy Center.

Rescheduling wouldn’t directly affect another marijuana business problem: difficulty accessing banks, particularly for loans, because the federally regulated institutions are wary of the drug’s legal status. The industry has been looking instead to a measure called the SAFE Banking Act . It has repeatedly passed the House but stalled in the Senate.

ARE THERE CRITICS? WHAT DO THEY SAY?

Indeed, there are, including the national anti-legalization group Smart Approaches to Marijuana. President Kevin Sabet, a former Obama administration drug policy official, said the HHS recommendation “flies in the face of science, reeks of politics” and gives a regrettable nod to an industry “desperately looking for legitimacy.”

Some legalization advocates say rescheduling weed is too incremental. They want to keep the focus on removing it completely from the controlled substances list, which doesn’t include such items as alcohol or tobacco (they’re regulated, but that’s not the same).

Paul Armentano, the deputy director of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws, said that simply reclassifying marijuana would be “perpetuating the existing divide between state and federal marijuana policies.” Kaliko Castille, a past president of the Minority Cannabis Business Association, said rescheduling just “re-brands prohibition,” rather than giving an all-clear to state licensees and putting a definitive close to decades of arrests that disproportionately pulled in people of color.

“Schedule III is going to leave it in this kind of amorphous, mucky middle where people are not going to understand the danger of it still being federally illegal,” he said.

What marijuana reclassification means and the effects of rescheduling

Marijuana would no longer be considered one of the most risky and tightly controlled drugs, under a recommendation by Attorney General Merrick Garland to loosen restrictions on cannabis.

Garland is calling for the reclassification of marijuana from its long-criticized status as a Schedule I substance. This would not legalize or decriminalize cannabis, but it would ease barriers to research and boost the bottom lines of legal businesses.

The move, if enacted, would mark a historic shift in federal policy toward a drug that a majority of Americans can now legally buy in their states. But the implications of rescheduling are still murky, and cannabis advocates contend it would not end the War on Drugs or eliminate the regulatory challenges.

What is a controlled substance?

The Controlled Substances Act regulates drugs and categorizes them into one of five “schedules,” depending on their medical benefits and potential for abuse.

The schedules aren’t a ranking of how bad the drugs are for users or society, but instead are a guide for how limited access to the drug should be for doctors, pharmacists and patients.

What is the difference between Schedule I and Schedule III?

Schedule I status, including heroin and LSD, means the federal government thinks there is no accepted medical use and a high potential for abuse. Federal law prohibits the cultivation and possession of Schedule I drugs, except for approved research studies.

Schedule III substances, including prescription drugs such as anabolic steroids, ketamine and testosterone, are considered to have medical use and moderate to low potential for physical and psychological dependence.

Marijuana being grouped with heroin has long been a source of outrage. Still, it’s important to note that this doesn’t mean the federal government is saying the drugs are equally dangerous but rather that they should both be tightly controlled. Deadlier and more addictive drugs such as opioid painkillers are in less restrictive categories, for example, because they have established therapeutic uses in mainstream medicine.

What would de-scheduling marijuana mean?

Cannabis advocates and some members of Congress hailed reclassification of marijuana as a positive step forward. But they also say it doesn’t go far enough and that the drug should be de-scheduled outright and no longer deemed a controlled substance. That would treat marijuana like alcohol and tobacco, formally giving states the leeway to regulate markets, like they are already doing.

Senate Majority Leader Charles E. Schumer (N.Y.) and other Democrats are advocating for legislation to remove marijuana as a controlled substance.

When would marijuana be rescheduled?

The White House’s Office of Management and Budget must review the measure, according to people familiar with the issue who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss internal administrative matters. The proposal, if accepted, would be formally published and would not go into effect for months until the public has a chance to comment.

There could also be legal challenges that could further delay the change. Donald Trump, the likely Republican presidential nominee, has not taken a position on rescheduling, leaving open the possibility of further complications if he defeats President Biden and returns to the White House.

Would marijuana still be illegal?

Marijuana is illegal at the federal level regardless of how it’s classified, and rescheduling alone would not change penalties for major federal marijuana cases.

Possession of Schedule I substances is a federal crime, but few people go to prison just for having marijuana, and most prosecutions happen at the state level.

What would reclassification mean for the marijuana industry?

Reclassifying marijuana would be good for cannabis companies, which face challenges with falling prices, competition with an illicit market and high taxes.

Under Internal Revenue Code Section 280E, businesses that sell Schedule I substances cannot deduct business expenses, resulting in a substantially higher tax rate for companies that grow and sell marijuana. But with marijuana reclassified, they will be eligible for the tax breaks.

Industry groups say the shift could propel some businesses into profitability when they no longer have to pay an effective tax rate of roughly 70 percent or more.

Some marijuana organizations fear the Food and Drug Administration would prohibit recreational marijuana and hold therapeutic products to the high bar needed to sell medicine if the drug is reclassified — requirements they say only large pharmaceutical companies may realistically be able to overcome. But other experts dismiss that concern as unfounded, arguing it is unlikely the FDA will suddenly crack down on marijuana after taking a largely hands-off approach for years.

What does rescheduling mean for research?

Removing marijuana’s Schedule I status would ease some restrictions on studying the drug, but researchers caution barriers would still remain.

To gain access to pot now, researchers need to register with the Drug Enforcement Administration under rules that would not apply if they studied Schedule II substances such as cocaine and fentanyl. They must submit research protocols to the DEA that need to be reviewed by the FDA . And they must meet stringent requirements for drug storage in electronic safes or vaults that some researchers say are too expensive and burdensome to follow.

Despite these restrictions, there is still plenty of research done on marijuana without ever handling the physical drug, such as observational studies comparing the effects of marijuana use on those who use and those who don’t.

Researchers say it’s crucial to directly study marijuana as it’s being sold and marketed to consumers, particularly edibles, vape cartridges and highly concentrated forms such as waxes. That would still be challenging under Schedule III because the drug would continue to be treated as a therapeutic rather than an increasingly popular recreational product.

The Research Error That Gave Us the Phrase ‘Missionary Position’

Missionaries have no direct involvement in this origin story. Alfred Kinsey, on the other hand ...

In his 1972 sex manual The Joy of Sex , author Alex Comfort described “matrimonial” sex, in which a man is on top of a supine woman, as “the good old Adam and Eve missionary position.”

Though missionary is by no means exclusive to that gender pairing, the fact that some people just recently learned so while watching 2023’s Red, White & Royal Blue proves that Comfort’s representation from over half a century ago still has some gas in the cultural relevance tank.

Missionary position, if in stereotype only, is the kind of vanilla sex favored by husbands and wives either too in love to unlock eyes or too lazy to try something else. It’s chaste enough to have made the final cut of a Marvel movie and so strongly associated with baby-making ( sans scientific evidence , mind you) that even the medieval Catholic Church gave it a gold stamp .

With that perception in mind, you can see how the position, in all its Adam-and-Eve glory, ended up with a religious nickname.

But that’s not how it happened. In fact, missionaries were mostly involved in this christening by mistake.

“The Way Squares Peg Round Holes”

Many a modern reader could glance at some datasets from Alfred Kinsey ’s 1948 book Sexual Behavior in the Human Male or its 1953 follow-up, Sexual Behavior in the Human Female , and spot flaws in the research (e.g. nearly all the survey participants were white). But for an American society starved for candid discussions about sex , the Kinsey reports were easy to take at face value when they first hit shelves. Both volumes achieved something not many statistical studies ever aspire to, let alone accomplish: They became bestsellers.

Even as researchers turned a critic’s eye on Kinsey’s work during the back half of the 20th century, certain details escaped further interrogation. One of them was the origin of the phrase missionary position .

In Sexual Behavior in the Human Male , to illustrate that the missionary position—or “the English-American position”—was far from global, Kinsey referenced anthropologist Bronisław Malinowski’s 1929 text about the Indigenous communities of Papua New Guinea’s Trobriand Islands. Malinowski, Kinsey wrote , “notes that caricatures of the English-American position are performed around the communal campfires, to the great amusement of the natives who refer to the position as the ‘missionary position.’” The implication was that the Indigenous islanders had learned this ridiculous copulation formation from Christian missionaries.

By the time English speakers embraced the term missionary position in full force during the sexual revolution, some had also begun to scorn the thing itself. Plenty of sexually liberated women continued to favor the bottom spot, but reactionaries tended to fixate on the notion that all this experimentation made missionary seem stuffy and uncool. One 1970 piece in The Guardian called it “the tatty old missionary position,” while a 1973 one in The Montreal Star described it as “the way squares peg round holes.”

It wasn’t just the phrase that got picked up from the Kinsey reports. Its origin story did, too, repeated (and often embellished) in everything from academic articles to newspaper advice columns. In a 1976 edition of The Ottawa Citizen , for example, advisor Dr. Aaron Rutledge asserted that missionary “was taught to Pacific Islanders and African tribespeople as the one religiously approved approach to husband-wife sexuality.”

But even if the good doctor hadn’t botched Kinsey’s account, he still would have accidentally been spreading misinformation —because Kinsey’s account wasn’t accurate in the first place.

“Sketchy and Flabby Movements”

Around the early 2000s, anthropologist and missiologist Robert J. Priest did something that countless scholars before him apparently hadn’t troubled to do: He read Malinowski’s 1929 book to locate the original reference to missionary position .

Curiously, not once does that exact term appear in the text. What Priest did find, which he laid out in a 2001 paper published in Current Anthropology , were other elements of Kinsey’s anecdote.

At one point, Malinowski chronicled the Trobriand people convening under a full moon (not around campfires, as Kinsey said) to play games and sing songs that sometimes involved sexual jokes . At another point, while outlining the islanders’ customary sex positions, Malinowski mentioned that they “despise the European position and consider it unpractical and improper.” He wasn’t talking about all arrangements wherein a woman is lying on her back—many of which were popular in the community—but specifically the one where the man subjects her to his whole body weight. In their words, per Malinowski, “he presses her heavily downwards, she cannot respond.”

“Altogether the natives are certain that white men do not know how to carry out intercourse effectively,” he wrote. They did, as Kinsey alluded to, enjoy caricaturing what Malinowski described as “the sketchy and flabby movements” and “the brevity and lack of vigour of the European performance.” 

Though they reportedly learned those ways from “white traders, planters, or officials,” Malinowski did mention missionaries in a later section about public displays of affection like “holding hands, leaning against each other, [and] embracing.” A man named Tokolibeba told him that this frowned-upon behavior, which some Trobriander couples had adopted from missionaries, was called “ misinari si bubunela ,” or “missionary fashion.”

In short, it seems that Kinsey may have conflated several true stories into one succinct and specious one. As Priest put it, “Kinsey apparently invented a legend while believing himself to be reporting historical fact and coined a new expression while thinking he was reporting an old one.”

It’s a mark of Kinsey’s influence that the expression’s origin went more or less unquestioned for so long. And also an indicator that most people thinking about sex probably aren’t too hung up on how any given position got its name.

An artificial intelligence-fueled stock market bubble will burst in 2026, according to Capital Economics.

The research firm has said that a stock market bubble, driven by investor excitement towards artificial intelligence, would drive the S&P 500 to as high as 6,500 by 2025, led by technology stocks.

But starting in 2026, those stock market gains should unwind precipitously as higher interest rates and an elevated inflation rate start to weigh down equity valuations.

"Ultimately, we anticipate that returns from equities over the next decade will be poorer than over the previous one. And we think that the long-running outperformance of the US stock market may come to an end," Capital Economics' Diana Iovanel and James Reilly said.

Their bearish stock market call is somewhat counter-intuitive, as the economists expect the growing adoption of AI will spark a boost in economic growth driven by increases in productivity. That economic boost should result in higher inflation than most expect and, in tandem, higher interest rates.

Higher interest rates and inflation are ultimately bad news for stock prices, as evidenced by the recent stock market decline , which was sparked by a surprisingly hot March CPI inflation report.

"We suspect that the bubble will ultimately burst beyond the end of next year, causing a correction in valuations. After all, this dynamic played out around both the dot-com bubble of the late 1990s and early 2000s and the Great Crash of 1929," Iovanel and Reilly said. 

The expected bursting of the stock market bubble should lead to a decade of investment returns that favor bonds over stocks. 

"We expect stronger returns as government bond yields settle at higher levels," Capital Economics said of the fixed-income market. 

Capital Economics forecasts that between now and the end of 2033, US stocks will deliver average annual returns of just 4.3%, which is well below the long-term average return of about 7% after inflation. Meanwhile, Capital Economics said it expects US Treasurys will return 4.5% in the same period, slightly edging out equity gains. 

Those projected returns are in stark contrast to the average annual returns of 13.1% delivered by US stocks over the past decade.

"American exceptionalism may end in the coming years," Iovanel and Reilly said.

But there is one major risk to their outlook, according to the analysts, and that's the inherent difficulty of accurately timing the top of a stock market bubble, and how long the unwinding of the bubble might last.

"When and how the AI-fueled equity bubble bursts is a key risk to our forecast. In particular, one downside risk is that the aftermath of the bursting of the bubble lasts longer than one year, as was the case following the dot com bubble," Iovanel and Reilly said.

US job market shows signs of cooling, with just 175,000 jobs added in April

Leisure and hospitality jobs still not back to pre-pandemic levels

The leisure and hospitality sector was the poster child of the employment devastation wreaked by the pandemic, losing half of its workforce (a whopping 8 million jobs) in two months.

The March jobs report this year seemed to indicate that this sector had finally reached its pre-pandemic employment levels .

Not so fast, my friend.

Following revisions to recent months' employment estimates, the key consumer-facing industry is back to being just shy of pre-pandemic form. As of April, there were an estimated 16.897 million leisure and hospitality workers versus 16.899 million in February 2020, according to Bureau of Labor Statistics data.

The leisure and hospitality industry, which was one of the key employment drivers in 2022 and 2023, saw a net gain of only 5,000 jobs last month .

Federal data is frequently subject to change as more detailed and accurate information becomes readily available. The monthly jobs report is no exception: The initial monthly estimates are revised twice more (and subject to later annual benchmarking revisions ).

The overall revisions seen in April were comparatively mild to those seen in the past. February's and March's estimated gains were revised down by a combined 22,000 jobs. February's estimates dropped by 34,000 to 236,000 net jobs added, while March's strong job gains of 303,000 were revised up by 12,000 to 315,000.

Labor force participation of prime working age women is at a record high

The employment rate of women in their prime working years just hit an all-time high in April.

The labor force participation rate for women between the ages of 25 and 54 climbed 0.3 percentage points to 78% last month, Bureau of Labor Statistics data shows.

In recent years, women’s labor force participation rebounded from a pandemic “she-cession”  and returned to  its pre-pandemic form  of making progressively historic labor market gains.

Prior to the pandemic, women’s labor force participation rates rose faster than their male counterparts as female-dominated industries such as health care and caregiving saw rapid growth; educational attainment for women rose substantially; and there were greater inroads by women into traditionally male-dominated fields such as construction, agriculture, and maintenance.

Since the pandemic, other developments helped serve as further drivers: increased work flexibility and strong job gains in female-dominated industries such as health care.

Bill Adams, chief economist for Comerica Bank, said better labor force participation was one of the main reasons why the overall unemployment rate ticked higher in April to 3.9%.

"The employment-population ratio for workers ages 25-54 was near the highest since 2022 and for workers 16-24 was near the highest since 2008," Adams wrote in a note on Friday.

Still, the overall labor force participation rate (workers 16 and older) was unchanged at 62.7%, nearing its post-pandemic high. Labor force participation rates have been on the decline since 2000 due to demographic shifts (largely, aging Baby Boomers). The pandemic effects (early retirements, deaths, long-Covid, caregiving needs) have played a role as well.

Black unemployment rate falls after unexpected spike in March

Friday's jobs report helped to quell concerns that Black Americans were seeing a steady rise of unemployment.

The jobless rate for Black workers in April fell back down to 5.6%, a rate last seen in February, after suddenly spiking to 6.4% in March , the highest since August 2022.

When that rate rocketed higher, economists cautioned that it was likely (and hopefully) a statistical anomaly. The household survey that feeds into the jobs report is typically more volatile, so it was possible that sudden leap wasn't fully representative.

The return to 5.6% in April was reassuring, Elise Gould, senior economist for the Economic Policy Institute, told CNN in an interview.

It's certainly a measure to keep watching she said, adding that it's viewed as a "canary in the coal mine."

"When things are going to get soft in the labor market, historically disadvantaged groups are often going to feel that first," she said. "It's still important to keep an eye on, but I think it's promising that it has dropped."

How 175,000 monthly job gains stacks up historically

Since the pandemic started to ease, US employers have added hundreds of thousands of jobs each month. For instance, in 2022, employers added an average of nearly 400,000 jobs each month and in 2023, they added around 225,000.

So, compared to that, April's 175,000 gains may sound paltry. But it's certainly nothing to sneeze at, looking back in time.

Though it's slightly below the 183,000 average monthly gains in the decade before the pandemic, it's well above the 125,000 average gains from 1939 to 2019. It's also above 2019's average monthly gains of 166,000 jobs.

Chicago Fed President: April jobs report was "very solid"

Chicago Federal Reserve President Austan Goolsbee views April's 175,000 job gains as "very solid."

It's a sign the economy is shifting back toward pre-Covid "conventional times," he said Friday in a Bloomberg TV interview.

"In a previous world, if you said you know you're getting jobs numbers in the 175,000 to 200,000 range, people would be quite happy with that," he said.

Goolsbee, who isn't voting on monetary policy decisions this year, didn't want to say whether or not this jobs report would make him more supportive of rate cuts this year — or rate hikes, which some of his colleagues have floated recently .

But jobs reports like April's are a positive development in that they give officials more confidence that the economy is not overheating, he added.

Biden touts "great American comeback"

President Joe Biden acknowledged that America's job market remains strong, saying in a statement that "the great American comeback continues," even after the latest batch of employment figures came in below expectations.

"When I took office, I inherited an economy on the brink, with the worst economic crisis in a century," he said in a statement Friday.

"Now we are seeing that plan in action, with well over 15 million jobs created since I took office, working-age women employed at a record high rate, wages rising faster than prices, and unemployment below 4 percent for a record 27 months in a row."

Wage growth cooled further in April

Americans' paychecks grew at a slower pace last month, but wage growth remains strong and April's softer earnings figures could be viewed favorably by the Federal Reserve, which is still fighting inflation.

Private-sector workers earned $34.75 an hour in April, on average. That was up 7 cents from March, or 0.2%. From a year earlier, wages grew 3.9% in April, which was the weakest annual rate since May 2021. That's not particularly concerning because workers are still commanding historically strong wage gains — by a very comfortable margin, too.

Annual wage growth never rose above 3.6% from 2007 (the earliest available data) to the spring of 2020, when the Covid-19 pandemic distorted economic data. Wage gains still have a way to go before even returning to pre-pandemic levels — and they're still outpacing inflation.

But the steady slowdown over the past few years, since reaching a peak in March 2022, is generally seen as a good thing by the Fed. The central bank has been fighting inflation for about two years now and a tight labor market is seen by officials as a potential source of inflationary pressure. They want wage growth to "be consistent" with their inflation target of 2%, so cooling wage gains could help them tug inflation lower. Workers can still command robust wages — if productivity growth is at the very least keeping up. It remains to be seen if 2023's burst of productivity will persist.

US stocks soared higher on Friday morning after new data showed that US job growth slowed considerably last month.

The Dow opened more than 530 points higher, the S&P was up 1.2% and the Nasdaq Composite gained 1.8%.

The US added just 175,000 new jobs in April, according to Bureau of Labor Statistics data released Friday. That's far below economists expectations for 235,000 jobs and the 315,000 jobs added in March. The unemployment rate ticked higher as well, to 3.9% from 3.8% the month before.

While that's bad news for Main Street, Wall Street celebrated the news.

That's because the Federal Reserve is working to slow the economy by hiking interest rates — the only tool it has to fight inflation. A still-robust job market means the central bank could continue to keep rates elevated without fear of sending the economy into a recession. If the labor market weakens, the Fed is more likely to consider a rate cut.

Here's why the Fed likely isn't worried about this jobs report

For the first time in a while, the latest US employment figures came in below economists' expectations. Job growth in April was sharply weaker than in the prior month and the unemployment rate edged higher, instead of holding steady as economists projected. The job market clearly slowed down this spring, but it remains robust.

Fed officials have said they want to see the job market come "into better balance" to help bring inflation lower. They got that with the April jobs report. But they're not necessarily popping champagne bottles, either.

For starters, this is just one month's data, so it remains to be seen whether this softening momentum will continue. Fed Chair Jerome Powell also said in his latest news conference — after the central bank held interest rates steady for the sixth-straight meeting — that policymakers would be concerned to see an "unexpected weakening in the labor market."

That means officials prefer to see a steady and orderly slowdown.

A string of unexpectedly weak labor data in the coming months could force officials to consider cutting rates sooner than expected, since the Fed is also mandated by Congress to maximize employment, in addition to stabilizing prices.

It's too soon to tell whether April was just noise or the start of a trend, but at least the Fed doesn't have worry about the job market heating back up.
