Academic Dress (Regalia)

A student being capped at graduation

Description of Regalia items

Members of the University must appear at its public ceremonies in their prescribed dress. For graduation you must hire, borrow, or buy the appropriate academic regalia as listed below:

University of Otago Bachelors regalia sample

  • Cap – the cap for all Masters' and Bachelors' degrees is a black trencher or 'mortar board' (as pictured right). Doctoral graduates wear a black velvet cap
  • Hood – this hangs around your neck and down your back and the colour of the hood lining denotes the degree

Regalia is worn for only one degree at a time, for instance you should not mix a Master's gown with a Bachelor's hood.

Only one hood is worn at a time, therefore if you are receiving two degrees, you should choose which hood you will wear at the ceremony. While you do not need the second hood for ceremony itself, you may still wish to hire this for photographs.

Regalia hire volunteers and graduation marshals will advise you on wearing your regalia correctly.

Which Regalia items to wear

Graduating with a degree.

If you are receiving a degree (including a doctoral degree) you need a trencher (or cap), gown, and hood. You must wear your gown and hood to the ceremony, and carry your trencher (or cap) until you have received your degree.

Graduating with a Second or Postgraduate Degree

If you are receiving a second or postgraduate degree, you wear the regalia appropriate to your new degree. As you will be capped again, you carry your trencher (or cap) until after you receive this degree.

Graduating with a Postgraduate Diploma

If you are receiving a postgraduate diploma, you wear the regalia appropriate to your degree (even if you obtained your degree from another institution), as diplomas do not have their own unique regalia.

As you are not being "capped", you must wear your trencher (or cap) while you are crossing the stage. Men should remove their trencher (or cap) for the National Anthem.

Graduating with a Diploma (including a Postgraduate Diploma), No Previous Degree

If you are receiving a diploma (including a postgraduate diploma) and do not hold a degree, you wear a black Bachelor's gown, without a hood or trencher.

What to wear with your Regalia

Graduate wearing korowai

Korowai and equivalent ceremonial garments of other cultures may be worn with academic regalia.

Hiring Regalia

Academic regalia is normally hired from Graduate Women New Zealand (Otago Branch). Proceeds provide funds for fellowships, awards, and grants.

You will select the regalia that you wish to hire and pay the associated charge by credit card within your eVision student portal. Please ensure that you make your payment at least five weeks before your graduation ceremony.

If you are graduating with a diploma or a postgraduate diploma, and obtained your degree from another institution, please note that we cannot guarantee the availability of regalia from anywhere other than the University of Otago.

If you have other family members who hold a degree and wish to hire regalia for photographic purposes, they must contact one of the regalia conveners for your ceremony directly to arrange this.

Information about collecting and returning your regalia, and contact details for the regalia conveners will be sent to you via email approximately 6 weeks prior to your graduation ceremony.

Payment for Regalia hire

You will be able to see how much you need to pay for regalia within your eVision student portal, and pay by credit card.

Purchasing Regalia

If you are wanting to purchase regalia to wear at your ceremony, please ensure that you allow plenty of time for this to be made and sent to you.

For further information about purchasing regalia including the cost, please contact Étude Classique (located in Auckland), directly. A link to their contact details is below.

If you are traveling from outside of the Los Angeles area for Commencement, it is highly recommended to reserve accommodations early. Regardless of the plans you make, please review cancellation policies closely. Commencement schedules could be subject to change based on health and safety considerations.

  • The hotel adjacent to the USC main campus is the  USC Hotel .
  • Visit  Discover Los Angeles for a handy listing of hotels by price, location, and amenities. When searching, select “Downtown/LA Metro” for the nearest adjacent neighborhood to USC.

Other popular visitor neighborhoods—Beverly Hills, Santa Monica, and Pasadena, offer a variety of hotels at different price points.

What commencement events will require a ticket?

All commencement events taking place both on and off campus from May 8-11 th will require a ticket. You can find the complete list of commencement events requiring a ticket on our commencement website.

Graduates and their guests will need separate tickets for each day. Graduates will receive their tickets through USC Ticket Office My Account no later than Friday, May 3. After claiming their mobile tickets, they may transfer event tickets to up to eight named guests for the commencement ceremonies and celebrations that they are registered to attend.

Will commencement tickets be made available free of charge?

Yes, a graduating student can reserve up to nine tickets (one for themselves and up to eight for their named guests) at no charge for the commencement ceremonies and celebrations that they are registered to attend.

How do I reserve tickets?

Graduating students will receive a detailed memo, sent to their USC email address, to inform them when their commencement tickets are available to download. The memo will provide information on how to download their ticket – and distribute their eight guest tickets – for the commencement ceremonies and celebrations that they are registered to attend. Graduating students will need to use their USC email account to access these tickets. Children under 2 years of age do not need a ticket to attend.

All tickets transferred to family members and other guests will be linked back to the graduate who reserved them.

Is it possible to reserve more than nine tickets?

Graduating students may request additional tickets by completing the Additional Ticket Request Form . All requests for additional tickets will be reviewed, and we will do our best to accommodate these requests within reason and in consideration of space limitations. Graduating students may only request additional guest tickets for ceremonies/celebrations they are currently registered to attend.

Will guests have the option to print tickets?

No, all tickets are mobile and printed tickets will not be accepted. Tickets should be downloaded to a mobile device prior to arriving to campus. On-campus Wi-Fi service may be limited or unavailable due to the large crowd.

When and where will I need to show my mobile ticket for entry?

All graduates and guests will be required to show a mobile ticket when entering campus or one of the off-campus venues (Galen Center, USC Village Great Lawn, Shrine Auditorium, Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum).

Do I need to scan my ticket when leaving campus/commencement ceremony?

If you plan on returning for another commencement activity [in the same day], you must have your ticket scanned when exiting campus. If scanned when exiting, you can return later [that day], and your ticket will still be valid.

Why has the university moved to a ticketing system for this year’s commencement?

With an expected 65,000 students, families, and friends planning to attend numerous ceremonies and celebrations, USC – like most large research universities – has made the decision to transition to a ticketed system to ensure a safe and secure celebration.

Why are you putting in place these new security measures?

Our focus remains on the safety of all of our guests as we gather to celebrate our 2024 graduating class. The university is implementing the same security protocols we use at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. Our hope is guests will be familiar with the procedures they have experienced at Trojan football games.

What time will campus open for commencement events on May 9, 10 and 11?

Commencement event guests can access campus beginning at 8:00 a.m.

How far in advance should I arrive before my ceremony?

To avoid potential delays, we recommend you arrive on campus at least two hours prior to your ceremony. There will be hospitality areas in a variety of places to sit, rest and hydrate in the shade.

Similar to security checks at Trojan football and basketball games, all persons and their belongings will be subject to metal detector screening and bag inspection prior to entering campus.

Will you supply clear bags if I don’t have one?

Please plan to bring your own clear bag. We will make some available to guests on a first come, first served basis.

Will there be a place to store my bag?

We plan to have a limited number of spaces available on a first come, first served basis to store belongings that do not pass security. We recommend storing your items in your car or elsewhere.

Celebrating Iowa’s spring 2024 grads

detail of Iowa graduation regalia

This spring, more than 5,300 University of Iowa undergraduate, graduate, and professional students will earn degrees. These Hawkeyes have engaged, excelled, and stretched to reach their goals.

Abbi Shekleton always knew she wanted to be a Hawkeye; it was a happy coincidence that Iowa has a highly ranked program in speech pathology, her academic area of interest. With master’s degree in hand, Shekleton will begin a clinical fellowship in Cedar Rapids, followed by a full-time position there as a speech-language pathologist .

Brian Damman, a senior legal counsel at a financial technology company in Des Moines and father of three, was able to add valuable perspective to his job while also maintaining a busy home life by completing Iowa’s online MBA program .

Sushma Santhana, a biomedical engineering graduate, worked in a campus lab to help create hydrogels to prevent skin wound infections and now is headed to a job at Boston Scientific .

Benton Renaud combined his academic work in finance and political science with his extracurricular work serving as a resident assistant and on the University Lecture Committee to pave a career path that is taking him to a two-year financial rotation with Boeing.

And Maggie McQuillen found the perfect fit for her active lifestyle in Iowa’s exercise science program — the Anamosa, Iowa, native will help others reach and maintain their own fitness goals through her work as a personal trainer.

Year after year, our students have pushed to achieve more and to come together for the greater good — that’s the Hawkeye Way. As this cohort of new graduates enters the next stage of their lives, they leave campus full of potential and promise.

If you or a loved one is graduating this spring, find ceremony information at the UI Commencement website .

Acclaimed astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson and CNN news anchor Abby Phillip will share their insight with Kean University graduates as the featured speakers for the University’s 2024 undergraduate and graduate commencements.

“At Kean University our goal is to launch our graduates onto successful career paths, and Neil deGrasse Tyson and Abby Phillip are both inspiring examples of success and excellent role models for our students,” said Kean University President Lamont O. Repollet, Ed.D. “We are extremely proud to welcome these two stellar individuals to speak to our 2024 Kean graduating classes.”

Tyson, the director of New York’s Hayden Planetarium and a highly-respected scientist known for his work on PBS Nova , Discovery and numerous documentary and news appearances, will address undergraduates and their families on Thursday, May 16, at Kean’s Undergraduate Commencement at the Prudential Center in Newark.

Tyson, who holds a Doctorate of Astrophysics from Columbia University, will also be presented with an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters for his outstanding contributions as an astrophysicist.

Phillip, anchor of the cable network’s NewsNight with Abby Phillip and a former senior political correspondent and anchor of Inside Politics Sunday , will deliver her address to post-baccalaureate students at Graduate Commencement on Tuesday, May 14 at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark. Phillip is making her second appearance before a Kean audience after serving as a President’s Distinguished Lecturer in 2022.

Steve Fastook ’H06, president of the Kean University Board of Trustees, said Tyson and Phillip will shine as memorable Commencement speakers.

“Our Undergraduate and Graduate commencements are the pinnacle of our academic year at Kean and a time that we celebrate the hard work and dedication of our graduates,” Fastook said. “We look forward to the added excitement these speakers will bring to our ceremonies.”

Tyson is an oft-quoted and world-renowned scientist, who has shared his knowledge on TV programs on PBS, NatGeo and other outlets; in numerous documentaries, films and podcasts; and even played himself in television comedies, including The Big Bang Theory and the animated series The Simpsons . He has also written numerous books, and currently serves as astrophysicist and Frederick P. Rose director of the Hayden Planetarium, American Museum of Natural History.

Phillip anchors NewsNight with Abby Phillip, airing weeknights at 10 p.m., covering the day’s biggest stories with a sharp, insightful approach. During her meteoric rise at CNN, she has moderated presidential debates; covered the White House during the Trump administration; and anchored special coverage of Election Night in America surrounding the 2020 election.
