Transportation business in Ghana is still growing with the increase in population which is estimated at about 180,000 million as at 2018.   • Commercial luxury bus and mini-bus : These are used for both town and inter-city services to carry passengers. Workers that commute to work or others travelling outside the state use this means.
  • Car town service (taxi) : This is also used to convey passengers within and out of the state. It is a more secure means of transport than the unregistered and unpainted “kabu-kabu” because each owner registers the car with the state government agency . There is also another form of car service known as “kabu-kabu”, also used to carry passenger but for a short distance journey.
  • Haulage transport service : This is the use of different types of automobile to carry goods for a charge. Different types of vehicles include, tanker, trailer, tipper, etc. are used to convey different kinds of goods.
  • Offer hire purchase services : This type of business is spreading to all the states of the federation. It is a new way to transportation business in which you get regular income, more or less, it is a guaranteed income. It works in this way: you buy whatever type of would be commercial vehicle at a particular price and hire them out to different type of drivers at higher prices. The driver will pay for the price agreed installmentally. For example, an entrepreneur buys ten tri-cycle at GHC10,000 each and hire each one out at GHC70,000 each with ten months instalment of GHC70,000 each month, after which the hirer becomes the owner. So with the instalment payment of GHC70,000 per month, the total amount payable at the end of the 10th month is GHC700,000. Assuming the entrepreneur received all the instalments, he makes GHC200,000 from each of the tri-cycle. It is a cool business, is it not?
  • Other classes of transportation business such as the use of aircraft, train, ship or canoe and pipeline are outside the purview of this article. Since the article is designed for an average Nigerian who want to be an entrepreneur as a transporter.

Effective transport systems are critical in the socio-economic development of nations. Globally, there is a wide recognition of the need to put in place adequate measures to achieve sustainable transport systems for the greater good of society. To do this, requires an awareness of the myriad of challenges faced by stakeholders in the transport sector. Against this background, the researchers sought to explore the transportation challenges companies in Ghana face using Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis (STM) as a case. The study adopted the mixed methods approach with descriptive survey as the design. A total of 85 employees of three companies in the Metropolis was involved in the study through census data collection method. The research instruments used were questionnaire and interview guide whilst percentages, means, standard deviation and thematic analytical tools were employed for the study. The study discovered that the greatest transport management challenge in the Metropolis is the general lack of transport management experts. Other challenges include high cost of transport operations, poor vehicle maintenance, ineffective transport policies in organizations and weak transport infrastructure in the Metropolis. It is recommended that companies in STM should put in place proper training and development programs to address the skill gaps in inherent in their transport management systems.

The Problem

Accra is a growing city with increasing congestion and longer commute times. The city has experienced an average growth rate of 2% over the past ten years and is expected to continue growing from its current population of around 2.4 million. In the past few years, owning and operating a vehicle has become more affordable to a larger portion of Ghana’s population. In Accra, this has increased the number of vehicles leading to higher levels of congestion. The city has also experienced significant urban sprawl and people have continued to move further from the central business district (CBD). As a result, people must commute longer distances as the CBD accounts for the main source of Accra’s economic activity (Brookins 2019). In addition to creating large time costs and reduced safety for travelers, these factors have had an adverse impact on the environment. 

Due to rapid population growth and the struggle to update urban planning to accommodate traffic volumes, most of Accra’s population is served by the informal transport sector, which consists mainly of mini-buses, often referred to as tro-tros. Tro-tros are often older vehicles and it is customary for riders to fill them past capacity. The market remains mostly unregulated and creates safety risks, damages the environment, and contributes to congestion. Approximately 70% of the population use the informal system as their means of transport due to its flexibility and low cost. Tro-tros are a low-cost option for people to travel and have flexible routes that adjust according to demand. The second choice for transport is privately owned vehicles, which increases congestion and carbon emissions. Investments towards improving Accra’s public transport have been made, but further solutions are needed in order to solve the issues caused by the higher volumes of traffic.

In order to reduce congestion, increase safety, and reduce emissions, there must be a change in the state of urban transport. This paper will investigate possible solutions to improve urban transport in Accra. Possible solutions include investment in infrastructure, urban planning, and a public transport system. This paper will highlight the costs and benefits of investing in a public transport system. This paper will also identify possible solutions that could improve the public transport system and identify alternative transport solutions if public transport is financially unsustainable. Although the costs and benefits of these alternative solutions have not been calculated due to lack of data, they should be considered before project implementation. This will enable the city to optimally incorporate urban planning and infrastructure improvements into the design of a new public transport system. 

The Cost of the Traffic in Accra

While traffic congestion currently creates a large time cost, it also represents a large potential benefit if travelling times can be reduced. To calculate this time cost, we assume that the average daily distance travelled is 27 kilometers (km) (UNEP 2016). The World Bank Implementation and Completion Results Report (ICR 2017) found that average traffic speed on the main arterial roads of Accra is 28 km per hour. This results in an average commute time of 58 minutes every day. The value of a project that can increase traffic speed to a flow rate of 36 km per hour and creates an estimated present value of $311,630,758 USD (GHS 1.73 billion) over 30 years with an 8% discount rate. Although the speed of Accra’s traffic is limited by many factors, it can be improved. We will investigate factors causing this congestion and comment on how these might be improved to increase the flow of traffic and reduce the time costs associated with traffic. Another cost of Accra’s transport system is attributed to a lack of safety. According to the Pedestrian Safety Action Plan for the Accra Metropolitan Assembly, the average annual number of accidents is near the average for African cities (AMA 2019). However, the number of accidents causing fatalities and injuries affecting pedestrians is much higher than most other African cities, and it has some of the most dangerous streets in the world for pedestrians (AMA 2019). Increasing the safety of pedestrians would benefit the large proportion of the population who either commute by walking or walk to access public transport. A project that could improve safety would have large potential benefits in terms of injuries and fatalities avoided. 

Intervention 1: Bus Rapid Transport System

The project being analyzed will include investment in infrastructure for a BRT system, traffic management in order to support the system, and institutional strengthening to coordinate all the ministries involved in the planning, management, and monitoring of the BRT system. Investing in this project would have benefits including decreased time savings, increased safety for all road users, and reduced vehicle operation costs.

The World Bank and the Government of Ghana have made investments to improve the infrastructure in Accra and create institutions to support a public transport system.  Since 2016, buses have been purchased for Accra’s bus system. By adding the additional components that make a BRT, including the construction and enforcement of a separate bus lane and institutional strengthening to support the BRT, buses can avoid being stuck in congestion with the rest of traffic, making it a more attractive choice for passengers.

Implementation Considerations

This analysis is performed on one possible solution to address Accra’s urban transport issues. While the goal of this report is to highlight the costs and benefits of implementing a bus rapid transport system there are many other solutions and considerations policymakers should evaluate apart from a BRT. Assessing the most cost-effective solution would require more data than the authors had available at the time of writing this report. 

To conduct this analysis, updated data on traffic flow, vehicle operational costs, use of the tro-tro system, and pedestrian traffic should be collected and analyzed. This would allow project implementers to improve traffic management such as optimizing turning lanes for buses, coordinating the public transport services to include complementary bus routes and tro-tros as a feeder system to the BRT, and implement required infrastructure improvements. This would also allow for a more complete analysis of the benefits of the project. 

Costs and Benefits

The costs associated with this project include investment and operational cost of the BRT system. The value of the investment and operational costs are presented below in Table 1, assuming an 8% discount rate. The investment and operational costs are presented Table 1 below. This is looking at an investment period of 4 years and operational period of 30 years.

The benefits included in the cost benefit model are time savings from reduced congestion and reduced carbon emissions from decreased vehicle operation costs in Accra. Another potential benefit of the BRT system is increased safety. Although this benefit was not quantified in the model, it will be further discussed in the analysis. The benefits for the BRT are presented in the Table 2 below. These figures are based on an operational period of 30 years. We assume that time is valued at the rate of urban hourly wages and that carbon is valued in the first year (2020) at 29.9 USD and that the value of carbon emissions will grow by 2% each year.

The following tables provide summaries of the BCR for the proposed project with the frist presented in U.S. dollars and second presented in Ghanaian Cedi. Although the BCR is greater than 1.0 at both a 5% and 8% discount rate, it is less than 1.0 when the discount rate is increased to 14%. The quality of evidence for each of the discount rates is rated as “Medium”. Similarly, Figure 1 provides a visual representation of the costs and benefits by type.

Major mail delivery delays raise concerns about voting in the 2024 elections

In Virginia, hundreds of veterans had their colon cancer screening tests invalidated after the results took months to arrive by mail. An Atlanta college student missed an academic trip to Ghana when their passport with two-day shipping took a month to show up. A bride in Texas had to rent a dress for her wedding after hers spent weeks stuck in a Houston postal facility.

Across the country, residents and businesses have been reporting widespread slowdowns in mail and package delivery by the U.S. Postal Service. The delays have become so persistent that members of Congress have gotten involved, urging the Postal Service to drastically correct course and raising concern about what impact the disruptions could have on mail-in ballots in the upcoming election.

The delays appear to largely stem from a new system the Postal Service began rolling out last fall that will eventually funnel all the nation’s letters and packages through a consolidated network of 60 regional distribution centers — similar to the airlines’ hub-and-spoke model. The change is part of a wider $40 billion, 10-year overhaul of the network that Postmaster General Louis DeJoy has said will reduce costs, improve reliability and make the Postal Service more competitive. But in some instances, the plan has done the opposite, according to the Office of the Inspector General for the Postal Service, members of Congress and Postal Service advocacy groups.

“It’s just a dumpster fire right now,” said Leo Raymond, a former Postal Service manager and managing director of Mailers Hub, an industry group for direct mail companies. He said his members have had everything from customer bills to strategically timed marketing material caught up in the delays. “If you’re a business, you’re going to be discouraged from using the mail because you want your stuff to actually get there.”

Nationwide, 87% of first class, two-day mail arrived on time during the last three months of 2023, a 2.5 percentage-point decrease from the same period a year earlier, according to data published by the Postal Service inspector general. For mail intended to take three to five days, just 70% arrived on time, a decrease of 11 percentage points, the data showed.

A top senator with oversight of the Postal Service, Gary Peters, called on the agency last month to pause any further changes to its distribution network over fears the delays could worsen and spread. But an official with Peters’ office said there has been no indication the Postal Service plans to do so.

“The nature of USPS’s network changes has now raised significant concerns including the potential for degraded rural service due to fewer facilities, delayed delivery of election mail that would be processed at out-of-state facilities, and critical health information such as laboratory tests not being processed same-day due to decreased transportation trips,” said Peters, a Michigan Democrat, in a March letter to DeJoy.

Delays have been the most significant in some of the first regions to roll out the new regional distribution system, including Richmond, Virginia, Houston and the metro Atlanta area.

Mail delays have become so prevalent in Richmond, which implemented one of the first regional distribution centers in October, that Richmond General Registrar Keith Balmer told residents in February not to send their ballots for the March presidential primary by mail and to instead use one of three drop boxes in the city or to vote in person at an early voting location or a polling site on Election Day. For the upcoming election, Balmer said he will be strongly urging voters to use drop boxes.

“I understand that these issues extend beyond mere inconvenience; they represent a fundamental threat to our democracy,” Balmer said in a blog post on Feb. 26.

The Postal Service has attributed the issues it has had over the past six months in Atlanta, Houston, Kansas City and Richmond to a range of factors, including a weather-related roof collapse, the transition to new processing equipment, the loss of a transportation vendor and “executional complications arising from operational transitions,” the Postal Service said in a statement to NBC News. But it said the disruptions have been improving.

“We readily acknowledge and regret that there have been service performance issues in several major metropolitan areas in the past six months,” the statement said. “In each of these site-specific disruptions, we have moved quickly to understand the local issue and stabilize the situation. As a result, service performance is improving or has returned to expected performance in these local communities.”

For the November election, the Postal Service said in its statement that it will “employ a robust and proven process to ensure proper handling and delivery of all Election Mail, including ballots.” During the November 2022 midterm elections, 98.96% of ballots sent by voters to election officials were delivered within three days, 99.82% were delivered within five days, and 99.93% were delivered within seven days, according to the Postal Service.

While the Postal Service said it is working to correct the issues that have occurred over the past several months, a report released this month by the inspector general for the Postal Service highlighted the complexities of the problems in Richmond.

The Postal Service had spent $25 million converting an existing facility near Richmond into one that would serve as a central hub for mail traveling from more than 100 miles away in Rocky Mount, North Carolina. As the new system rolled out, residents in Richmond began reporting significant disruptions to their mail starting in October. In the final three months of 2023, just 66% of mail there arrived on time, the worst rate in the country, according to data from the inspector general.

The report detailed poorly supervised staff, including workers idly waiting for the mail to arrive and one mail handler sleeping on a parked forklift, along with sloppy handling of the mail, including packages scattered around the facility floor, pieces of mail that had fallen under equipment, and 2-month-old mail found sitting in a container in the truck yard.

Poorly planned vehicle routes, which were being constantly changed, also added to delays, with a lack of drivers and vehicles sitting idle while they waited for mail to be sorted. Some trucks left with just a small fraction of the mail they could carry. As a result, the number of extra trips to the facility increased eightfold and late trips were up by 30%, according to the report.

While the Postal Service had estimated the new facility would reduce costs by $14 million in 2024, the facility paid out an extra $5 million in unauthorized overtime in 2023 and had $3 million in questionable transportation costs, the report said.

Among the pieces of mail caught up in the delays where colon cancer screening results for veterans. The Richmond Veterans Affairs Medical Center told members of Congress in late January that 870 at-home colon cancer tests used to indicate whether a patient needs further screening took so long to arrive that they were invalid, with some tests taking months to be delivered.

A spokesman for the VA said the delivery of tests has improved since local congressional leaders raised the issue with Postal Service officials earlier this year, but the medical center is exploring other options for delivering the tests in case there are future problems.

Hundreds of thousands of dollars in donations to the Virginia Museum of History and Culture in Richmond were also snarled up in the delays, said museum President Jamie Bosket. He said the museum saw a drop-off in the number of donations it was receiving by mail in October, just as it normally would see a surge in year-end contributions. By December, the museum had received just 10 pieces of mail from donors compared to the hundreds it would normally get in that month.

“We were missing at least 600 pieces of mail that represented at least a quarter of a million dollars in donations,” said Bosket. “For us, when there’s a disruption to memberships and charitable giving it’s a disruption to every element of our operation.”

Then in late January, bundles of mail began showing up with hundreds of donations, many of them postmarked in October, he said. Bosket said he believes most of the mail from 2023 has been delivered, but the museum’s mail remains sporadic.

“Something is wrong,” said Bosket. “We don’t know what it is and we don’t know how to find relief long term or have any reassurance that we can reliably use the Postal Service.”

In Atlanta, residents have experienced similar delays since a new regional distribution center opened there in late February. After the facility opened, on-time delivery service in the region went from 60%-70%, which was already below average, to as low as 20%, according to Raymond. Local news organizations reported on hundreds of complaints from residents and long lines of trucks backed up at the facility waiting to drop off and pick up mail.

“Atlanta has been a complete house on fire,” said Raymond.

The HBCU Green Fund, which organizes an annual trip to Africa for students at historically Black colleges and universities, said it had nine passports stuck in the mail in Atlanta for more than a month before a trip to Ghana. The group had to scramble to get new passports and visas issued for the students less than 48 hours before they were scheduled to depart last month, but one student was unable to get a new passport and had to miss the trip.

In Houston, the delays began in December following the opening of a new regional distribution center there. During a January press conference by Rep. Al Green, a Texas Democrat, one bride said her $1,600 dress didn’t arrive in time for her wedding and she had to rent one at the last minute. Irene Ramirez said her 89-year-old father’s heart medication from the VA spent more than 18 days stuck in the mail in Houston. She said she even tried calling the White House to get help after spending hours on the phone with the Postal Service, only to be repeatedly disconnected.

“I understand we are all fallible humans,” Ramirez said. “But when the failures are ongoing and administrative and put people’s lives at risk, I feel we need to stop and quickly reverse course.”

Rep. Sylvia Garcia, a Democrat who represents portions of the Houston area, said the delays seem to have improved and she didn’t hear of any significant mail-in ballot issues during the March presidential primary. But she remains concerned about the upcoming November election.

“We’re approaching a major November election,” Garcia said during a call with reporters last month. “We need to make sure that we iron out any difficulties, any obstacles, any barriers, any issues now, so that we don’t end up in a situation much like we were in with the November ballots.”

In prior elections, the Postal Service has used special procedures to ensure mail-in ballots are promptly delivered. But any disruptions near the election, even relatively isolated ones, could have wide-ranging implications.

“Hopefully this won’t turn into a problem,” said Steve Hutkins, who runs the website Save the Post Office. “But if the election is really close and a couple of key states have mail ballot issues, it could be a nightmare.”

Weeks after learning that North Texas secured more 2026 FIFA World Cup matches than any other host city, Michael Morris credits his transportation plan — and its “special sauce” — as the reason the region scored high with the organizing agency.

Morris, who heads the North Central Texas Council of Governments’ transportation department, revealed the special ingredient is nothing more than a “bus bridge,” or a bus service that serves as a backup if trains are full.

The bus bridge is part of a range of transportation options, focused on repetition and planning for all scenarios, that impressed FIFA, Morris said.

“We think we have nine events because they must have liked the stadium, the region, the hotels and, I think, the transportation plan,” Morris said. “They quickly realized how comprehensive this particular vision is, which I think is what sort of blew them away.”

Regional planners have tested the use of managed lanes and buses over several major events, including WrestleMania 38 and Super Bowl XLV, to bridge the trackless expanse between the TRE CentrePort station in Fort Worth and Arlington’s Entertainment District.

“We went to four Super Bowls before we put the transportation plan together for our Super Bowl, Super Bowl 45,” Morris said. “So (FIFA’s) hearing from someone who’s done this before, versus they go to a lot of U.S. cities and those plans haven’t even been put in place in those cities.”

The road to 2026 focused on four areas: getting people to the stadium, risk management, other services, and a gap analysis of which services are missing. Morris compared the analysis to a college relay race.

“Is there enough wayfinding? Is there enough shade? Is there water? (Are) there restrooms? You don’t want to lose anything in a baton pass,” Morris said.

The Regional Transportation Council, the independent transportation policy body of NCTCOG, will use $17.5 million from the city of Arlington to fund improvements around the Entertainment District that include updating signs, sidewalks and streets. 

Driving personal vehicles remains an option. Using toll lanes and premium parking at AT&T Stadium are ways to improve that experience, but Morris said he doesn’t expect many people will be driving, given the international audience of this major sporting event. 

“These (people) are from other countries; they drive on a different side of the road. They’ll be nervous driving anyways, and we hit that really hard in our presentation, and I think (FIFA) agrees with that,” he said.

Instead, North Texas plans to capitalize on public transit in a city where there is no established transit agency.

The solution? Charter buses. 

At this time, a request is out with the U.S. Department of Transportation for a national waiver that would allow public sector transit vehicles to run outside their designated routes during the event to supplement the charter buses that will move people. 

However, Morris said, the Council of Governments will prioritize securing more charter buses rather than relying upon existing public transit buses, given the shortage of workers and buses in that sector at the moment. 

“Even if granted a waiver, you may not have enough public sector people to provide that particular service,” Morris said. “Given where we are with the transit agencies desperately trying to get regular bus drivers. I’m not sure we will be exercising public sector fleets to substitute on transit routes when the transit agencies are desperately trying to serve the transit reps they currently have.”

During the Super Bowl, Morris said, 800 charter buses were used to move 30,000 people.

Similar to the Super Bowl, World Cup charter buses will have to adhere to a predetermined route from the hotels to the stadium. However, in the past, charter buses tried to deviate from predetermined routes. That will be remedied in the contracts.

“I’ve already told the (Dallas) Sports Commission, if (the buses) don’t run the route that we tell you, you’re not gonna get paid,” Morris said. “That’s why you test these events. What do you learn from these events? We learned the drivers didn’t follow the route.”

The buses will also supplement the Trinity Railway Express rail line, bringing people coming from Fort Worth or Dallas to the CenterPort station onto the stadium.

“This is the special sauce we added to our presentation, and we call it a bus bridge,” Morris said. “We will stack public sector buses at our rail stations, so if the rail vehicles get full because we anticipate a significant international presence, we will put them directly on public sector buses and run them on the managed lanes just like the motorcoaches.”

Following the allocation of matches Feb. 4 , many pointed to Arlington’s lack of public transportation as the main reason why North Texas did not win the final game. At this time, North Texas has not received feedback from FIFA on why AT&T Stadium did not receive the final game, said Monica Paul, executive director of the Dallas Sports Commission.

However, that has not stopped the commission and its partners from continuing with preparations. A lot has been done since the Feb. 4 match announcement, Paul said.

“Right now, we’re really planning around the match schedule as best we can in all the standard areas that you would to put on an event from a staffing standpoint,” Paul said.

The main challenge at this moment is updating the baseline budget for the nine matches while finding various revenue streams to help cover some of the costs of hosting the event, including transportation to and from the stadium.

“We’re definitely in the process of figuring (it) out because while we had some baselines, one of the things on a budget standpoint we never put together was nine matches. We had six, four, five, eight, but never nine,” Paul said.

As North Texas waits to hear whether it will be hosting any national team’s base camp, the international broadcast center and the referees’ headquarters, one thing is certain: Dallas-Fort Worth is keen on making the most of their match allocation.

“I think nine matches shows that FIFA wants Dallas to be a central location, a hub. I think it makes their overall operation dealing with 16 different host cities and three different countries maybe be a little bit easier from a connectivity standpoint,” Paul said.

Over the last two years, my journey as a travel enthusiast and Business Insider's travel reporter in Singapore has brought me to almost every country in Southeast Asia.

In total, there are 10 countries in Southeast Asia , and I've traveled to nine of them — Singapore, Philippines, Malaysia, Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, Cambodia, Laos, and Brunei. Myanmar remains the only country in the region I have not visited, and while I am keen to explore it, I have held off on visiting because of the country's ongoing civil war.

I've watched the sun rise in Angkor Wat in Cambodia and cared for elephants in Chiang Mai, Thailand. I've explored the Bornean jungle in Brunei and crawled the Cu Chi Tunnels in southern Vietnam.

But it hasn't always been easy. I've made several mistakes traveling across the region , especially as a solo traveler. Here are five mistakes I made and how to avoid them.

1. Going during monsoon season and not planning for the weather.

In July, I traveled to Thailand on a reporting trip to cover the budding cannabis industry . There, I was met with heavy rain nearly every day. In Bangkok, I was staying in a hostel in Chakkrawat , a district with narrow, meandering streets, which made it difficult to walk anywhere in the pouring rain.

I didn't plan for the weather, so I didn't have an umbrella or poncho with me and had to rush to get one at the last minute. I also had a packed itinerary with a lot of travel between meetings, which was a hassle in the constant downpour.

Before traveling to Southeast Asia, make sure to avoid two seasons — the monsoon season, which often comes with strong typhoons in countries like the Philippines, and the burning season, where farmers burn land for fertile soil. This is a common occurrence in countries like Laos, Thailand, and the island of Borneo, which is shared between Brunei, Indonesia, and Malaysia.

When I traveled to Laos in April last year during the burning season , most of my plans — including a hot air balloon ride — were canceled because of the thick smog. I also didn't have an N95 mask with me, and I ended up with a sore throat.

If you do plan to come during these seasons, make sure to pack accordingly and plan a flexible schedule.

2. Traveling during Ramadan and expecting the same practices everywhere.

Having grown up in Singapore, I'm familiar with the practices during Ramadan , the holy month for Muslims, where they fast for most of the day. I studied Malay for seven years, and in school, I often fasted with my Muslim classmates and ate only in private.

Still, in many cities in Singapore, Malaysia, and Indonesia , non-Muslims are free to dine in public, so long as they do so respectfully. But on my trip to Brunei in April — at the height of the burning season and in the middle of Ramadan — there were more practices I needed to observe.

Most restaurants were closed, and diners weren't allowed to eat there even if they were open — only take-out was allowed. Eating in public was a major faux pas even for non-Muslims, and if you want to drink some water, you can only do so when nobody is around.

It wasn't easy, especially as Brunei was sweltering at 100 degrees Fahrenheit on some days. I made do by returning to the hotel for lunch and grabbing a big dinner with the locals at the night market after they had broken their fast.

3. Not packing enough modest outfits when visiting temples and mosques.

Southeast Asia is pretty liberal, and you can wear whatever you want in many places. In popular destinations like Phuket, Thailand, and Bali, Indonesia, lots of tourists walk around in bikini tops and shorts, and locals mostly tolerate it.

But there are certain places you do need to cover up, like places of worship, which include temples and mosques. When I visited Angkor Wat — the famed temple complex in Cambodia — in February last year, I found some tourists being told off by the local tour guides for wearing shorts and tank tops — "Tomb Raider" style.

I've learned to err on the right side of caution and bring a sarong wherever I go. It's an easy way to cover up and make an outfit more modest when you need to.

4. Forgetting to pack medication, especially when I plan to eat street food.

Southeast Asia has some of the world's most flavorful food. In every country, you can find food that is cheap and delicious, and that includes Singapore , the world's most expensive city. In countries like Malaysia and Vietnam, street food dishes can cost as little as a dollar.

I eat mostly street food when I travel in Southeast Asia, so medicine for tummy-related illnesses is a must. I've only gotten sick twice from eating street food — and it was the same dish both times— and unfortunately, those were the few times I didn't have medicine with me.

I'm a pretty adventurous eater. I've eaten everything from pufferfish stew to frog porridge and dishes made with intestines off the street. I've learned to wash the utensils provided before digging in and make sure the food is cooked to order and heated up before being served.

5. Relying on my card and not bringing enough cash with me.

In Singapore, I don't really use cash and often use Apple Pay, mobile payments, and cards. But I've found that many stores in other countries in Southeast Asia only accept cash.

For example, on my third trip to Vietnam, I spent an hour trying to make payment via bank transfer after the staff at a luxury perfume shop — which was selling items priced upwards of $200 — informed me at the last minute that they didn't accept card or contactless payment.

I've also found the majority of street vendors in the region only accept mobile payment — which is limited to local banks — or cash. I've learned to change a considerable amount of money before leaving the airport and keep whatever I didn't use for my next trip.

Razing I-794 has its appeal. But Third Ward business operators worry about traffic impact

Jim Plaisted understands the appeal of replacing part of downtown Milwaukee's Interstate 794 with a surface street.

But he also has to "deal with the reality" faced by his constituents: Historic Third Ward business operators who are worried about increased neighborhood traffic.

Those concerns should be eased by the likelihood that razing part of I-794 between the Hoan Bridge and just west of the Milwaukee River will more evenly disperse traffic throughout downtown, says Taylor Korslin, a freeway removal advocate.

Plaisted, Historic Third Ward Association executive director, and Korslin, an architect who's a representative of Rethink I-794, spoke at a Monday meeting of the Greater Milwaukee Committee. More than 100 members of the civic group were in the audience.

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation in 2023 disclosed seven conceptual plans to repair I-794 and two plans to remove it.

Along with a freeway removal option, the agency by fall plans to narrow those plans to one option to rebuild freeway bridges within I-794's current alignment and keep all existing freeway access ramps, and another option to rebuild bridges with a tightened alignment that consolidates ramps.

After gathering additional public input, WisDOT plans to choose a preferred alternative by the end of 2024.

Final design work is to occur in 2025 and 2026, with construction work starting in 2027 or 2028 if the $300 million project obtains federal and state funding.

Plaisted told the Greater Milwaukee Committee group that the Third Ward is "on fire" with development that includes the new 333 Water apartment tow er , 333 N. Water St., and plans for Foxtown Landing , a taproom, distillery and restaurant at 412-420 N. Plankinton Ave.

He said Third Ward businesses have learned to handle I-794's barrier between the neighborhood and downtown through such efforts as Brighten the Passage , which created murals and new lighting beneath the freeway; Riverwalk Commons , which added pickleball courts and other public space underneath the freeway along North Water Street, and the off-leash dog park that will be built just north of Foxtown Landing.

"We've figured out how to deal with this," Plaisted said. "We're very concerned about messing that up."

Korslin cited WisDOT estimates that just one-third of the I-794 traffic would continue to use the two-way, four-lane boulevard version of Clybourn Street that would be upgraded if the freeway is razed.

Others cars would be dispersed to such streets as St. Paul Avenue, Michigan Street and Wisconsin Avenue, he said.

Plaisted also raised concerns about increased traffic on Water Street. Third Ward business operators hope to see it narrowed from four lanes to two lanes, with wider sidewalks, to create an environment more friendly to people walking and biking.

One possible remedy, Korslin said, would be to make Plankinton Avenue a two-way street to provide an alternative to Water Street.

Along with removing a barrier between downtown, the Third Ward and the lakefront, I-794's removal would free up 15 acres for development − creating more economic vitality and a more attractive downtown , Korslin said.

And that leads to an issue that's bigger than solving a transportation problem, he said.

"What do we want to become as a city?" Korslin asked.
