We are pioneers of sport research, cutting through traditional disciplinary boundaries and drawing together the leading minds from across a vast range of research centres, themes and specialisms. The result is an incredible concentration of expertise, with a scope that’s unique in the UK – an institute founded to be a global leader in the academic study of sport.

From the science of human movement and elite competition, to the structures that define sport’s role in our society and economy, to areas like fashion, 3d printing and sustainability, we’re exploring our world through the lens of sport. But we’re also making an impact. Our work is influencing policies and performance at the highest level, shifting the conversation well beyond academia and touching lives across the globe.

Our Research Expertise

Human health and movement.

The human body is incredible. A complex, organic machine that’s in a constant state of change – from growth throughout childhood and development through conditioning, to the challenges of disease and advancing older age.

The structure and function of the human body is a vast area of study, encompassing physiology, biomechanics, motor control and psychology, engineering, computer science and cell biology, among other areas. We’re in a prime place to explore it all. With the facilities at our disposal across the Manchester Metropolitan University Institute of Sport, we have the technology to scan, track, model and analyse the mechanisms controlling human movement to a level of depth and detail that’s unique in the UK.

With physiology labs, 3D movement capture, 3 Tesla MRI and x-ray body scanners, we have the equipment to examine muscles, tendons, bones, the nervous system, visual gaze behaviour and brain function. It’s everything we need to understand how these systems work together to enable humans to function – whether living with a pathological condition or competing at an international level (or both). How and where we apply these tools is where our impact lies.

In recent years, we’ve worked to understand how astronauts react to the micro-gravity environment of space. With ever-longer missions comes an ever-greater impact on muscle mass, blood volume and bone density. Understanding how this happens helps us combat these and related issues – whether by harnessing technology or by developing exercise techniques. Yet the impact of that work goes well beyond the few who go into space.  

Back on the ground, our research has helped to develop guideline recommendations for older people to improve balance, combat frailty and reduce falls. This kind of impact is not unique. Tracking the movement of athletes in training has informed the way we assess the health of children in the playground, while our work measuring swimmers’ movement in the water has both helped us change the classifications in disability sport and is having an impact on swimwear design.

Our work has helped shape the design of exercise equipment, developed responses to a range of clinical conditions that impair human movement and broadly align with the UK’s Industrial Strategy – how the body works has a profound impact on how long an ageing population goes to work. We also have international impact, including our influence on policy reports with the World Health Organisation.

Across the spectrum of challenges for human health and movement, we’re a world leader in delivering real impact.

Sports Medicine and Elite Performance

Competitive sport pushes boundaries – challenging and testing the limits of what humans can achieve, whether it’s in terms of speed or strength, endurance or accuracy. Manchester provides a fitting backdrop for exploring this pursuit, as the base for top-tier clubs, national governing bodies and international and club athletes across a range of sports.

Manchester offers a rich environment for partnerships that can pave the way to ground-breaking discovery. The Institute’s exceptional facilities enhance our setting, giving us the resources to optimise the performance of swimmers, runners, cyclists, weightlifters and many more.

Our work not only helps athletes prepare for success – optimising their training, diet and development – but also ensures that they protect and maintain their long-term health. For example, we’ve conducted research on the Female Athlete Triad, where overtraining and poor nutrition management can lead to low bone density, disturbed menstrual cycles and low energy availability.

We look beyond the purely physical aspects, investigating the relationship between physical activity, competition and mental health, while working to understand the psychology of elite sportspeople. We are recognised across the world for our pioneering work in movement simulation and mental practice techniques – having developed the PETTLEP model for motor imagery which is now globally accepted across academic programmes in sport psychology. We have also done extensive work with bodybuilders to understand the impact of their psychosocial environment on their performance, while our work with Olympians from the past 65 years is exploring the importance of social factors in their careers.

Our expertise in the genetics of elite performance has paved the way to a wide range of projects working with footballers, rugby players and marathon runners. We’ve not only worked to identify the genotypes that can predict performance but have also developed our understanding of differences in sex development – work which underpinned evidence our experts gave as part of Caster Semenya’s appeal at the Court of Arbitration for Sport against the International Association of Athletics Federations’ ban from competition.

Our research expertise comes with real impact at the top of sport. For Dame Sarah Storey, support from our team, together with work in our environmental chamber mimicking high-altitude training, played its part in her record-setting medal haul in the velodrome. Alongside our work on the biomechanics of para swimming, we’ve not only had an impact on the sport’s classification system but have also provided the scientific evidence behind the coaching and training plans critical to a GB medal haul of 47 at the 2016 Rio Paralympics.

The influence of our research goes beyond providing the marginal gains for top athletes – what we learn in the elite forum has significant impact in the wider world. Our work on injury prevention has shaped our input to healthy ageing, while projects investigating wrist guards for snowboarders and mouth guards for boxers has helped set new standards for sporting equipment across Europe. We’ve also made strides in sport fashion to see how our apparel can impact our performance.

Our work at the very highest levels of sport – working hand in hand with elite athletes, national governing bodies and a range of other organisations – opens the doors to incredible impact, from medals on the podium to developments in governance, healthcare, fashion and beyond.

Policy, Society and Community

Consider some of the biggest issues facing our society today: an ageing population, sustainable development, social cohesion, national identity, international relations and the global economy. Sport has a role to play in all of it, but the importance of its contribution can often go unrecognised.

We’re working to give it a voice in the conversation – with a portfolio of evidence-based work that cuts across a range of different areas, stretching well beyond physical activity and into our community health, economic prosperity and environmental sustainability. With the largest social science group of sport-related researchers in the UK, together with an impressive network across the sporting landscape, we’re in a prime position to make a real impact.

Our research investigates sport’s power not just as healthy recreation but also as a tool for creating bonds within hard-to-reach communities and for reducing the social and economic impact of poverty. That starts with understanding participation. As such, we’ve examined the barriers to disabled participation, looked at the causes and impacts of British-Asian Muslim male participation and built enviable expertise in women’s sport – particularly around the growing participation and professionalisation within women’s football, not just in the UK but also in China.

From professional athletes and coaches, to major leagues, clothing manufacturers and events businesses, there is a complex economic ecosystem that relies on the world of sport. Our expertise on the economics of sport, both in the UK and across the Middle East, East Asia and Europe, covers every angle. With our work on mega events, we’ve investigated sport’s impact far beyond the stadium – the legacy of wider participation, the benefits for local economies and the geopolitical implications for nation states ‘sportwashing’ tarnished reputations. Our expertise in this area is not only helping organisers all over the world adapt to evolving commercial conditions but is also informing policy on ticket touting and has helped us become a leading voice in the conversations around the national and international benefits of hosting mega events.

As environmental sustainability becomes an increasingly urgent issue for the planet, we have an opportunity to play a leading role in positioning sport as part of the answer. We are therefore looking ahead to a range of work in this field – from the use and impact of greenspaces to active transport infrastructure.

Fighting Frailty and Falls Through Active Ageing

Over the past 20 years, our researchers have built an impressive body of work around the biomechanics and physiology of bones and muscles. Using gold standard techniques, from MRI and ultrasound scanning to biopsies and muscle fibre characterisation, our team have worked to better understand how exercise can keep people healthy throughout their lives – in particular, looking at how sedentary behaviour leads to sarcopenia, osteoporosis, falls, fractures and frailty in old age.

It’s work that has not only fed into a broad range of original publications but has also had a lasting impact on practice and policy – informing health interventions locally, nationally and internationally. The team’s efforts have provided vital evidence to steer public health initiatives and recommendations from both the UK Chief Medical Officer and the Canadian Chief Public Health Officer, as well as the World Health Organization. Locally, our work has shaped local evidence-based policy and healthy ageing provision across Greater Manchester and Cheshire, while the British Master Athletic Federation adopted our findings into practice – advising older athletes to engage in strengthening and balance training to prevent falls and injury.

Working with the Sports Industry to Run Better, Safer Events

Sporting events are an important feature of modern society – not only entertainment for millions of people every year, but a large and growing sector of our economy. Ensuring that these events are both safe and profitable is difficult, with a range of societal, regulatory and commercial pressures. The largest events even come with geopolitical issues, as nations see opportunities for wielding soft power through hosting.

Our team’s work looks at sports events from various angles, from how emerging states are seeking to use mega-events, to the legal issues around ticket resales. Starting in 2012, it’s a body of work that puts Manchester Met at the forefront of this specialised field. Today, our research is not only helping organisers around the world adapt to changing commercial conditions and maximise the value of events, but is also informing key policy-making decisions.

Ethics and Evidence in the Genetics of Sport

Our work into the genetics of human physiology and physical performance was thrust onto the world stage in the “sporting trial of the century”, as the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) ruled on Caster Semenya vs the IAAF over new rules around athletes with difference in sex development (DSD). When her lawyers needed a leader in the field to be an expert witness, they turned to Manchester Met.

Few others understand the complexities of genetic characteristics of athletes better – our team has spent years on research to help shape athletes’ selection, training and rehabilitation from injury. At the case, an 80-page report and oral deposition – citing more than 30 of our team’s publications – provided crucial scientific evidence. So, while CAS ruled against Semenya, it also acknowledged that the rules were discriminatory. Widespread debate followed the case and continues today, as the world of sport wrestles with the ethics of genetic testing of athletes.

NCAA International Student-Athletes' Psychological Wellbeing During COVID-19

In the immediate aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, international collegiate student-athletes (ISAs) experienced cultural adjustments, language barriers, isolation, and psychological distress related to their status as students and athletes in the U.S. (Charitonidi & Kaburakis, 2022). Thus, we examined the prevalence of depression, psychological distress, sleep disturbances, and problematic drinking among 509 ISAs (Mage = 20.39 years, SD = 1.52; women = 63.1%) drawn from NCAA Division I (77%), II (15.3%), and III (7.7%) institutions; data were collected April/May 2020. Clinical point prevalence rates were: 27.9% (depression), 9.2% (psychological distress), 2.4% (sleep disturbance), and 12.4% (risky drinking). We examined each mental health concern by athletes' gender (men and women), academic year (1st year versus all other years), and country of citizenship (English as an official language vs. not). For distress, a gender by year interaction was significant (F(1, 501) = 7.33, p = .007, ηp2 = .014); women, regardless of year, reported higher levels than men in 2nd year or above. Compared to men ISAs, women reported higher levels of depression (F(1, 501) = 12.55, p < .001, ηp2 = .024) and sleep (F(1, 501) = 20.59, p < .001, ηp2 = .039). ISAs from official English-speaking countries reported higher levels of psychological distress (F(1, 501) = 7.07, p = .008, ηp2 = .014) and sleep disturbance (F(1, 501) = 6.53, p = .011, ηp2 = .013) than non-English speaking countries. Athletic departments should continue to facilitate dialogue and provide resources about how psychological struggles may present themselves for ISAs.

College Student-Athletes' Depression and Anxiety: Intersection of Gender, Race, and Sexual Orientation

College student-athletes face multiple academic, physical, and social stressors, to name a few, which can contribute to mental health concerns (Edwards &amp; Froehle, 2021). Mental health prevalence appears to vary by gender, race, and sexual orientation (SO; e.g., Kroshus & Davoren, 2016; Neal et al., 2013; Tran, 2021; Wolanin et al., 2016). Although such concerns are likely to differ based on athlete identities, limited research examines their intersection. Thus, we (a) determined the overall prevalence of depression (PHQ-2) and anxiety (GAD-2) among 388 collegiate athletes [68.8% women; 52.8% athletes of color (AOCs), 83.5% heterosexual] drawn from two NCAA institutions, and (b) examined the relationship of each mental health concern to athletes' gender (men; women), race (White; AOC), and SO (heterosexual; LGBQ+). Clinical point prevalence rates were: 7.2% depression and 23.7% anxiety. For depression scores, we found a significant gender by SO interaction, where LGBQ+ women athletes scored higher than all other groups (F (1, 380) = 7.51, p = .006, ηp2 = .019), and a main effect of gender (women scoring higher), F (1, 380) = 14.60, p < .001, ηp2 = .037. For anxiety, we found significant main effects for gender, F (1, 380) = 11.18, p < .001, ηp2 = .029, with women reporting higher than men, and for SO, (F (1, 380) = 4.05, p = .045, ηp2 = .011) such that LGBQ+ athletes had higher scores than heterosexual athletes. That two historically marginalized groups, women and athletes who identified as LGBQ+, reported experiencing higher levels of anxiety and depression suggests there potentially remains underlying structural and institutionalized discrimination. AOCs, another historically marginalized group, reported levels of anxiety and depression that were similar to all others. Given our findings, sport psychologists and researchers must attend to athlete identities to better understand their mental health concerns.

International Collegiate Athlete's Self-Compassion, Social Support, COVID-19 Worry and Psychological Distress: A Mediational Analysist-Athletes

In the immediate aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic and cancellation of NCAA sports, international student-athletes (ISAs) were affected in two important ways. Along with the loss of sport, ISAs had to decide whether to remain in the U.S. or return home, without knowing the health and sport eligibility ramifications of their decisions (Charitonidi & Kaburakis, 2022). Thus, we examined ISAs' psychological distress in the immediate aftermath of COVID-19 and the roles that their COVID worry, self-compassion, and social support played. ISAs (N = 514; women = 63%; 74 countries; 22 sports) drawn from NCAA Division I, II, and III institutions completed measures of these constructs in April/May 2020. Through the PROCESS macro, we found that worry (b = .646), self-compassion (b = -.367), and social support (b = -.128) were related directly and significantly to their psychological distress, explaining 44% of the variance. Self-compassion (b = -.029, 95% CI [-.048, -.013]) and social support (b = .018, SE = .008, 95% CI [.003, .036]) also were related indirectly to distress through athletes' reported worry about COVID. The ISAs used both internal and external psychological resources during the COVID-19 pandemic. ISAs who were self-compassionate experienced less worry about COVID and were less distressed. Although ISAs' social support was directly related to less distress, it indirectly increased their distress through more worry. Being connected to others is a buffering resource for athletes (Simons & Bird, 2022), but in the face of COVID, and all the associated health risks, such connections also may have raised the ISAs worries about how they and their loved ones might be affected. Thus, these psychological resources appear to have played a key role in how ISAs coped in the immediate aftermath of COVID, suggesting that they should be taught to athletes in the future.

The Relationship of Division I Collegiate Athletes' Race, Gender, and Sexual Orientation to Their Mental Health Help-Seeking

Despite relatively high levels of mental health (MH) concerns, collegiate student-athletes generally underutilize the psychological services that are available to them (e.g., Davoren & Hwang, 2014). Prior literature has shown gender differences in collegiate athletes' help-seeking and use of MH counseling, with male, compared to female, athletes being less likely to seek or use individual counseling services (e.g., Moreland et al., 2018; Slavin et al., 2023). However, less is known about how other identities, specifically race and sexual orientation, relate to athlete help-seeking. Thus, we determined the overall prevalence of help-seeking among 391 Division I and II athletes and examined how help-seeking might vary by race (Athletes of Color [AOC] = 206; White = 185), sexual orientation (LGBQ+ = 67; heterosexual = 324), and gender (women = 267; men = 121). As part of their annual MH screening, athletes provided information on their identities and indicated (YES/NO) if they were interested in seeking individual counseling services for personal or mental health concerns from their schools' sport psychologists. Overall, 88 student-athletes (22.8%) expressed interest in MH services. Due to small cell sizes (i.e., n < 5), we could not analyze interactions. However, in regard to main effects, gender was significant, χ2(1) = 21.15, p = < .001; women athletes (29.4%) were more likely to request MH counseling compared to men (8.3%). No statistically significant differences existed for MH help-seeking between AOC (25.0%) and White athletes (20.3%), or between LGBQ+ athletes (30.2%) and heterosexual athletes (21.4%). Our results corroborate extant research that has documented this gender effect (e.g., Moreland et al., 2018). Furthermore, although not significantly different, athletes with marginalized identities reported more help-seeking, which may be related to greater distress or need. Athletic departments and sport psychology professionals must continue to increase their efforts to destigmatize counseling services.

NCAA Student-Athletes Comfort Making Mental Health Disclosures: Implications of Gender, Race, and Who They Are Telling

Collegiate athletes experience mental health (MH) concerns, yet their comfort in seeking care is limited (Guillver et al., 2012). Further, such help-seeking may vary based on athlete race and gender (Wang et al., 2005), though research on such disclosure is limited. Thus, we examined athletes' gender and race in relation to their comfort telling different individuals about seeking counseling. Participants were 391 collegiate athletes (Athletes of Color (AOC): n = 199; 52.4%; Women: n= 258, 68.3%). During annual MH screening, athletes were presented with seven key individuals (e.g., head coach, family) and asked if they would be comfortable sharing that they had a MH concern or were seeking counseling (YES/NO). Athletes' frequencies of disclosures were: families (81.5%), athletic trainers (57.1%), strength coaches (47.1%), and academic advisors (38.4%). The athletes' rates of disclosing differed by race and gender, but only for head coaches, assistant coaches, and teammates. Female AOCs reported higher frequencies of sharing with their head coaches, χ2(1) = 10.51, p = .001 and assistant coaches, χ2(1) = 5.92, p = .015 than male AOC. Further, independent of race, women athletes were more likely to share with their head (χ2(1) = 18.08, p = <.001) and assistant (χ2(1) = 5.73, p= .017) coaches. For teammates, women athletes again shared more frequently than men athletes, χ2(1) = 4.78, p = .029, regardless of race. Overall, the percentage of athletes who were comfortable disclosing was based on gender and race. Women athletes generally, and women AOC specifically, feel more comfortable talking to their coaches about help-seeking, which is consistent with past research suggesting women are more likely to disclose about MH than men (Woodhead et al., 2021). Continued work needs to be done within athletic departments to develop more comfort in disclosing, particularly with individuals who hold power over the athletes.

Athletic Identity and Psychological Distress: The Moderating Roles of Social Support and Self-Compassion.

Despite research having examined athletic identity (AI) and psychological outcomes, few studies have fully considered how the effects of AI may be moderated by race/ethnicity, gender, social support, and self-compassion. College athletes (N = 4,116; Mage = 19.84; women = 66.9%; White = 78.2%) participated from mid-April to mid-May 2020 in the immediate aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic and the cancellation of collegiate sports. Through a three-way ANOVA, we found a significant gender by race interaction; Black men reporting stronger AIs compared to White male and female athletes. Through a series of regression analyses, we found that when self-compassion and social support were low, AI was related to more psychological distress for the White women. There were also significant compassion by support interactions for the Black women and White men; psychological distress was highest when SS and SC were low. During times of transition, when AI may be disrupted, athletes' self-compassion and social support may help ameliorate the otherwise negative effects on psychological well-being that would be expected. Thus, sports medicine professionals might focus on helping their athletes develop these psychological resources.

NCAA College Coaches' Attitudes and Perceptions of LGBQ+ Student-Athletes: A Qualitative Analysis

Over the last 20 years, there has been a growing acceptance of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and queer (LGBQ+) individuals in the United States (Pew Research Center, 2020; Witeck, 2014) as well as within sport (Kavoura & Kokkonen, 2021). Despite such progress, heterosexist attitudes and behaviors continue to exist within NCAA athletic departments and sport teams (Turk et al., 2019). One major stakeholder within the collegiate athletic environment that influences student-athletes is coaches. Due to their influential roles in the lives of their players, understanding coaches' attitudes and perceptions toward LGBQ+ student-athletes is essential for assessing how safe collegiate sport environments are for LGBQ+ athletes. However, the research in this area has been limited. The present study aims to address this gap by investigating coaches' perceptions to inform policy and education for promoting inclusive sport environments for LGBQ+ athletes. Participants were 1,533 collegiate coaches (Mage = 39.65 years; women = 41.3%; White = 83.7%; non-Hispanic = 86.4%; heterosexual = 74.9%) drawn from all three NCAA Divisions. Coaches were asked to identify the extent to which they would support and accept athletes on their teams being open about their sexual orientation and/or gender identity, and to describe the reasoning for their beliefs. Through reflexive thematic analysis (Braun & Clarke, 2016), six higher order themes regarding the coaches' reasons were identified: (a) Levels of Acceptance, (b) I coach, therefore I am…, (c) Supportive Environments are Essential, (d) As a queer coach…, (e) Limiting Queerness, and (f) Sexual Orientation Does Not Provide a Competitive Advantage. Analyses illuminate avenues for LGBQ+ athlete inclusion policies and training for coaches.

Race, Gender, Competition Level, Athletic Identity, and Psychological Distress: The Moderating Roles of Social Support and Self-Compassion

The COVID-19 global pandemic resulted in the cancellation of all sports thus disrupting the careers of collegiate student-athletes. Despite several studies examining athletic identity, competition level, race, gender, self-compassion, and social support, there is a lack of literature that has fully examined how disruptions to athletic identity may relate to psychological distress through the interactions of race and gender. The current study consisted of 4,116 student-athletes (Mage = 19.84; women = 66.9%; White = 78.2%) to achieve two purposes when considering the disrupting effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and the cancellation of collegiate sports. First, I examined the relationship between gender, race/ethnicity, competition level, and athletic identity. Though there were no significant differences across NCAA Divisional levels, I found a significant gender by race interaction with Black male athletes reporting stronger athletic identities compared to White male and female athletes as revealed by post-hoc analyses. Second, I examined the relationship between athletic identity and psychological distress and found that when social support and self-compassion are both low, there is a moderate, positive relationship between athletic identity and psychological distress for the White female athletes. Additionally, there were main effects for self-compassion and social support where higher levels were related to lower psychological distress among the White female athletes and Latino/a athletes. For the Black male athletes, there was a main effect for only self-compassion. There was a significant self-compassion by social support interaction for the Black female athletes and White male athletes, suggesting that when self-compassion is low, or high, there are higher levels of psychological distress experienced when social support is low. Implications of the findings, limitations, and future directions are discussed.

This study is aimed to identify a clinic-based decision tool that can be used to identify when an athlete, who has undergone ACL Reconstruction, is ready to return to sports. By having a tool that providers can use in clinic, we can improve the outcomes of ACL reconstruction patients to successfully return to their activities and reduce the risk of a second ACL injury.

In this study, we are investigating the implementation of booster visits after completion of physical therapy for adolescent athletes that have undergone ACL Reconstruction and how these visits may improve the outcomes after this injury.

This longitudinal project has investigated adolescent athletes after ACL reconstruction for the 2 years following their return to sport. With this longitudinal data, this study has identified risk factors of those who suffer a second ACL injury and also helped identify factors to consider when evaluating an athlete’s readiness to return to sport.

Juvenile fibromyalgia (JFM) is a chronic condition characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain that may contribute to functional disability and reduced quality of life. One method to alleviate fibromyalgia associated pain is physical activity; however, patients with JFM regularly experience pain after exercising, which can cascade into a fear of movement (FoM) and reduced physical activity. The purpose of this PORTICO Center Pilot and Feasibility Program project is to investigate the movement profiles of patients with JFM and determine how pain and FoM influence the structure of motor behavior over the duration of a six-minute walk test.

Concussion diagnosis and recovery are critical to ensuring the safety of athletes. This study investigates tools and methods for diagnosing concussions and determining safe recovery and return to sport following a concussion.

Sport Research Projects

Sport-related research at Buckinghamshire New University covers a range of areas, including coaching, resilience in elite sport, disability sport, sport therapy and exercise sciences. Details of some current projects are shown below. The web pages for the BNU Human Performance Exercise and Wellbeing Centre  have further details of our extensive facilities and our consultancy work.

Commissioned by Buckinghamshire County Council and activity partnership ‘Leap with Us’, Dr Ben Ives and  Dr Ben Clayton   completed a qualitative evaluation of the motivations and challenges for local disability sport and physical activity. Findings were collated to identify suggestions for future practice and creation of a sports provider’s guide for engaging disabled people in sport and physical activity.

Hand cycling is a form of Paracycling used by individuals who are unable to ride a conventional road bike or tricycle due to either a spinal cord injury and/or physical impairment. Over the past two decades, the popularity of hand cycling as a sport has increased considerably. In 1999 hand cycling was formally recognised as a sport by the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) and has been included in the Paralympic Games since 2004.

There has been little previous research into factors that affect performance in competitive hand cycling with most previous research taking place in clinical rehabilitation settings.

In an initial study,  Jonpaul Nevin  and colleagues found that compared to endurance training only, an 8-week concurrent training intervention based upon a conjugated block periodisation model appears to be a more effective training regime for improving the performance capabilities of hand cyclists.

Jonpaul is undertaking another study to investigate and identify the physiological characteristics that relate to, and which can be used to predict, hand cycling performance. This research is being carried out in partnership with Cardiff Metropolitan University.

Velocity-Based Training (VBT) is an area of increasing interest within the field of strength and conditioning.

By monitoring movement velocity during resistance training the strength and conditioning practitioner can optimise training loads based upon an athlete’s conditional, day-to-day training readiness. The use of VBT may offer a unique approach to optimise strength gains and improve an athlete’s subsequent physical performance potential.

Jonpaul Nevin  is conducting a research to investigate the long-term efficacy of VBT and make evidence-based recommendations by which to guide best practice in the use of this novel and exciting strength training method.

Professor Paul Morgan  is undertaking a range of research projects around team resilience in elite sport, with collaborators from Nottingham Trent University and Loughborough University.

His research resulted in defining team resilience as a dynamic, psychosocial process which protects a group of individuals from the potential negative effect of the stressors they collectively encounter. It comprises of processes whereby team members use their individual and combined resources to positively adapt when experiencing adversity. Findings revealed four main resilient characteristics of elite sport teams: group structure, mastery approaches, social capital, and collective efficacy.

This research led to the development and initial validation of an inventory for the Characteristics of Resilience in Sports Teams (CREST). The CREST was argued to be a usable state-like measure of team-level resilient characteristics and vulnerabilities. The measure could be used in future process-oriented research examining adverse events and sports team’s pre- and post-adversity functioning.

Additional research has included resilience case studies in Rugby union teams and a longitudinal study of developing team resilience in a high level sports team.

This new report examines the relationship between girls’ sport participation and mental health. The data provides strong evidence that in high quality sport settings, playing sports can help lower depression and anxiety and enhance peer relationships and meaning and purpose. 9. Predicting Double-Doubles

You can follow this tutorial to build a regression model in R to make such a prediction. Ultimately, the model correctly predicts double-doubles 61% of the time. Enrich the dataset and see if you can improve the model’s accuracy.

You’ll find a variety of sports analytics datasets on Jee’s site you can use. One option: This straightforward model uses only the team’s historical average. That’s why it’s an excellent project for beginners.

If you wanted to take this project further, you could incorporate historical player data to enrich the model.

Fantasy Sports can use data science to give your team a competitive advantage. In particular, most fantasy sports analytics projects look at the line-up and draft optimization, as well as predicting player performance. Here are some projects to try to improve your fantasy sports teams:

17. Predicting World Cup Game Winners

With the 2022 World Cup right around the corner, this sports machine learning project is super relevant. In 2018, researchers tested three models for predicting World Cup winners : Poisson regression, random forest, and ranking methods.

Using a random forest model, they simulated the World Cup 100,000 times, using FIFA rating, average team age, and player ability as essential variables. The model performed moderately well, predicting 11 of the Round of 16 teams correctly.

To start with the analysis, begin with data cleaning and pre-processing. Even though the dataset appears comprehensive, it’s vital to ensure it’s devoid of missing values, inconsistencies, or duplicates. Doing so greatly refines the precision of the insights that will be derived. After cleaning the data, dive into EDA using histograms, then transition to Temporal Analysis for historical trends.

For deeper insights, you can also study a specific nation’s metrics over time or identify historical rivalries by analyzing performance against specific countries.

20. F1 Performance Analysis

Formula 1 is a sport that’s as much about strategy and data as it is about speed. With races determined by split-second decisions, the information provided in this dataset can offer invaluable insights into the performance of each F1 racers over the season.

To begin, ensure that all datasets are consistent, free from discrepancies, and interlinked correctly. Perform an EDA to visualize metrics such as wins, podium finishes, and other pivotal performance metrics of the racers.

For a more challenging take, you could also analyze a racer’s performance over tracks and identify which tracks they perform the best in.

This weekend, as Melbourne City take on Sydney FC in the 2023-24 A-League Women (ALW) grand final, three players will be watching and cheering their team-mates on from the sidelines.

City forward Holly McNamara, and Sydney defenders Natalie Tobin and Kirsty Fenton, have all suffered an ACL injury this season, keeping them out of action for anywhere between six months and a year.

They join six other footballers from multiple ALW clubs in the stands as the season draws to a close, bringing the league's total ACL injury list to nine.

Like many other professional women's leagues around the world, Australia's top competition has been significantly affected by what players have anecdotally described as an "epidemic" of ACL injuries.

Women athletes are two to six times more likely than men to sustain an ACL injury while training or playing their sport: a number that has not improved despite the rapid professionalisation of women's football in recent years.

With more and more high-profile women footballers such as Sam Kerr, Beth Mead, Vivianne Miedema, Marie-Antoinette Katoto, Leah Williamson, Janine Beckie, Delphine Cascarino, and  dozens more internationals forced to miss major tournaments in the last two years  due to ACL tears — all while losing valuable income along the way — the calls for action have grown louder.

FIFPro, the global players' union, has finally heeded this call.

Today, the union launched a groundbreaking new program titled "Project ACL" that aims to address the many intersecting factors that put women footballers at higher risk of tearing their ACLs.

The three-year study will review existing research into ACL injuries in women athletes, conduct assessments of the resources and structures provided by participating Women's Super League (WSL) clubs in England, and deploy their own digital tool that tracks the playing workload, travel time, and high-intensity match minutes of WSL players in real-time, generating more comprehensive and nuanced data around the circumstances in which women footballers are most at risk.

While research continues to blossom around ACL injuries in women's sport, what makes FIFPro's program revolutionary is combining the academic work — which has mostly focused on internal biological and physiological factors in amateur athletes — with a broader assessment of the external environments that players play, train, recover, and travel in.

As with all sport, resources differ from club to club, with those women's teams that are backed by bigger, wealthier men's clubs likely having access to better resources such as qualified staff, gyms, recovery centres and programs, nutrition, and private or business-class travel compared with teams that are less supported.

However, there is simply not enough existing research on these environmental factors to determine which ones are the most significant, and which can be modified by clubs, coaches, and staff in ways that will prevent future injury.

"This research has never been done before," said Dr. Alex Culvin, FIFPro's Head of Strategy and Research for Women's Football.

"It's a stakeholder-collaborative project, which also hasn't been done before: we have four big stakeholders [FIFPro, England's player's union, Leeds-Beckett University, and Nike] coming together to better understand ACL injuries, as well as the environments and conditions in which they occur.

"This project is a response to the players rightly calling for more research: it's around centralising the needs of players and their voice, but also moving away from the singular or binary understandings of ACL injuries.

"[Instead of] pointing simply to 'workload' or 'female physiology', one of the primary objectives of this project is to understand the holistic risk factors, the environmental risk factors, and that fundamentally comes down to the conditions in which players play."

By partnering with WSL clubs, who will allow FIFPro's researchers into their facilities to assess things like equipment and facility access, squad sizes, staff-to-player ratios, budgets, programs, playing schedules, and performance data, the union hopes to produce a more holistic understanding of why ACL injuries occur, when and where they are most likely to happen, and how they can be prevented in future.

Not only does more, better, and more comprehensive research into ACL injuries give players and coaches more confidence and certainty in their careers, but it also makes commercial sense, with the growing economy of women's football resting on the performances of some of the most at-risk players due to their participation in multiple overlapping competitions and increasing demands on their bodies and minds.

This perhaps explains the involvement of Nike, one of football's biggest financial stakeholders, which will provide funding and support to FIFPro during the three-year project.

Continuing to build this body of research is crucial, according to Dr. Stacy Emmonds, a researcher at Leeds-Beckett who will be leading the study, because the research that currently exists — and which clubs, competitions, and federations use to make decisions — is still too small in scale and too narrow in focus.

"Around six per cent of [sports science and medical] literature is focused on the female athlete, and there have been various calls across recent years to improve that," she said.

"We also know that, due to this, some of the studies that have been done on women athletes lack power: they're very small samples, they're what we call 'low quality' evidence based on some of the methodologies, etc.

"We know there are potentially some contributing factors regarding female physiology, but we know there are a lot more things that can be influenced from the environmental factors that female athletes find themselves in, in terms of access to certain facilities and expertise.

"A lot of the language at the moment suggests that some of these risk factors are just inherent to females, and almost suggests we just need to accept that, when we know that they can actually be influenced.

"There's some good research out there looking at neuromuscular training programs that may be completed prior to training, but the effectiveness of those has not been explored with professional female athletes; they've been in amateur or they've been in youth athletes.

"So there really is a need for a broad range of research in this space, and we feel one of those key areas is the focus of this project: the environmental factors that contribute to injury risk and reduction in the women's game."

The quantitative data collected from these club assessments will then be complemented by qualitative data in the form of anonymous interviews of players — both those who have injured their ACLs and those who have not — to understand their daily workplace environments, how they feel about the support they receive, the amount of games they play, their training load, and how it all ties together in an overall feeling of risk of injury.

While the pilot program will focus exclusively on the WSL at first, FIFPro aims to produce a best-practice report that can be shared among clubs, players, and associations worldwide, with the results and recommendations of the study to be made available to the entire game, with other player unions invited to build upon the existing research by adding their own context-specific data around things like climate, playing surfaces, travel times, season length, etc.

Then, once that body of research is in place, it is hoped that various women's leagues around the world will use the data in order to advocate for minimum standards across multiple aspects of their playing and training environments, with clubs potentially held accountable or liable if minimum standards of care and support are not met if they are so negotiated within something like a collective bargaining agreement.

For the Project ACL leaders, 'success' of this three-year study comes in many forms.

First, they aim to change the narrative around ACL injuries so that a player's multiple environmental factors are always considered as part of the conversation, therefore providing more common knowledge and expectation that these factors can and will be addressed behind the scenes.

Second is laying out a blueprint for collaborative research between various footballing stakeholders in the pursuit of shared solutions that lead to the betterment of the game, with clubs and unions (which are usually at odds with each other) working together towards a common goal.

Finally, and perhaps most importantly, FIFPro hopes this project will further demonstrate the importance of positioning players at the centre of structural changes and decisions that, at the end of the day, affect them most of all.

So while McNamara, Tobin, and Fenton will have to watch their teams either lift or lose a trophy this weekend, this ambitious research project could mean that, in just a few years time, the players who come after them may no longer be at such a high risk of suffering the same fate.

Looking for inspiration? Here are a few ideas I have for your research project in sport science - a school science project, honors or PhD project? I would love to know if you did follow up with any of these ideas.

Fitness Quotient

I have created a questionnaire to measure fitness , though it has not been scientifically validated. With this test, you could determine someone's fitness without doing any physical testing, relying solely on replies to a simple questionnaire that could be completed in minutes. The format needs a bit of work, but it could form the basis of a research project, using actual fitness testing to validate such a questionnaire.

RPE Hand Scale

I have created a 5-point rating of perceived exertion scale , using only hand signals. For this RPE Scale, the subject just holds up the fingers of their hand to indicate the intensity level - from 1 to 5. The advantages of this scale over the popular Borg RPE scales are that it is simple, non-verbal and based on the 5-point Likert scale. This scale has not been scientifically tested and validated, so there is an opportunity for someone to conduct research on this topic.

Beep Testing for the Deaf

I am unaware of any fitness tests designed specifically for the deaf. Although deaf people can perform many fitness tests without modification, a very common test of aerobic fitness, the beep test, relies on audio signals so is not easy for deaf people to take part. Once you create the modified testing equipment, it will need to be validated. You will need access to some deaf athletes, there is a potential partner as discussed in a Topend Sports newsletter. Effect of Environmental Conditions on Fitness Testing Results

When living in the tropical north of Australia I conducted preliminary research on the effect of the hot climate on field fitness testing results . The results from fitness testing performed outdoors may be detrimentally affected by the environmental conditions, reducing the reliability and validity of the tests, and could make it difficult to compare to test results performed in other conditions and also to testing performed indoors. The effect would be expected to differ between types of tests.

Placebo effect and exercise

Could you be convinced that "fake" training is the real thing, and have performance benefits? I don't know how you can convince a subject that they are training when they are not, but you could try treatments that have no physical benefits but the athletes do believe that they have, and consequently improve in physical measures.

Encouragement Effect

How much benefit can you get by simple encouragement? Can you run for longer and lift more weight with some positive encouragement? What about the effect of music, used to motivate before exercise or during exercise to improve focus and calmness.

Sit and Reach Test Analysis

The sit and reach flexibility test — what does it actually measure? Design research to analyze the biomechanical factors of the test to see where the bending and stretching occur. This study could include a training element where different factors of the sit and reach test are specifically trained (e.g. stretching different muscle groups), then retest to see if the sit and reach test results change too.

New Fitness Tests

The details of a few new fitness tests have been provided to Topend Sports. As they are new, they have not undergone scientific study.

Stay away from the typical, overdone science fair cliches. Instead, create something that combines sports and science for your science fair project. 

Ideas to Get You Started

  • How does the material from which a baseball bat is made affect performance? How does a wood bat compare with an aluminum bat?
  • Does altitude affect the height of a ball bounce (for example, a golf ball)? If an effect is seen, can you attribute it to gravity or atmospheric pressure?
  • Examine the effect of energy bars on performance. Pick a sport. Is there a difference in performance if you use a protein-boosting energy bar versus a carbohydrate-boosting energy bar?
  • What is the effect of using a corked baseball bat compared to a normal one?
  • Does drinking an energy drink (or sports drink) affect reaction time? memory?
  • Are there really streaks in baseball? Or is it simply chance?
  • Compare energy drinks based on cost, taste, short-term effect, and long-term effect.
  • Which sports drink contains the most electrolytes?
  • How is a ball's diameter related to the time it takes to fall?
  • Does the length of a golf club affect the distance you can hit the ball?
  • Does a swim cap really reduce a swimmer's drag and increase speed?
  • How does exercise affect heart rate? This project is especially good if you can track data over a longer time frame.
  • Does exercise affect reaction time?
  • Does regular exercise affect memory?
  • At what slope angle is the mechanical advantage of a bicycle lost, as compared to running?
  • Compare different brands of balls for a sport (like baseball or golf) for cost versus performance.
  • Do helmets really protect against a crash? (Perform this test with a stimulant like a watermelon.)
  • What is the best air pressure for a soccer ball?
  • How does temperature affect the accuracy of a paintball shot?
  • Does altitude, temperature, or humidity have an effect on the number of home runs hit at a baseball diamond?
  • Does the presence or absence of a net affect free throw accuracy?
  • Measure the effect on peripheral vision from wearing different types of corrective eyewear (such as glasses). Does an athlete experience a noticeable improvement when peripheral vision is increased?
  • Is there an effect if you fill an inflatable ball with a different gas than air (such as nitrogen or helium)? You can measure the height of a bounce, weight, and effect on passing, as well as how long it stays inflated.

Tips for Choosing a Project

  • If you are an athlete or trainer, pick the sport you know best. Can you identify any problems to be examined? A good science fair project answers a question or solves a problem.
  • When you have an idea, consider how to design an experiment around it. You need data. Numerical data (numbers and measurements) are better than qualitative data (greater/lesser, better/worse), so design an experiment that gives you data you can graph and analyze.

Nearly 200 MSU graduate students share research projects

EAST LANSING, Mich. (WILX) - There was a showcase held at Michigan State University’s (MSU) campus for the College of Engineering on Thursday.

The graduate research symposium featured innovative presentations from nearly 200 graduate students. The event allowed the graduate students to share their research projects with people who may need to be more familiar with what they do.

“This is a really great opportunity for students to cross disciplines and explain their work to people who are not experts in their own field,” said Katy Colbry, the Assistant Dean for Graduate Student Services at the College of Engineering at MSU And so that is a really important skill because our research is only helpful if we can make people understand what we’re doing.”

Many students work all year on these projects and were excited to show them off.
