Uni student forgets to change laptop wallpaper, accidentally reveals his waifu

A man of culture.

University student Azur Lane Shoukaku

Updated on September 14, 1:34 .m. (GMT+8):  Improved relevancy.

Anime and manga are loved by many, and it’s common for fans to put up digital wallpapers of their favorite waifus or husbandos on their laptops and computers.

When one veterinary student in China was about to give a presentation, he made a critical error of plugging his laptop into the projector before changing his wallpaper, inadvertently revealing his waifu to the entire lecture hall.

The image of Azur Lane’s Shoukaku displayed prominently on a desktop with the student facepalming in the background has gone viral on Twitter.

Veterinary student at university forgets to change his wallpaper before presentation and reveals his waifu is Shoukaku from Azur Lane

Shoukaku from Azur Lane

The image posted by Twitter user @WeinerIvansia was accompanied by the caption, “Please remember to change the desktop background before a presentation”.

The internet drew much amusement from the relatable situation, and could empathize with the student facepalming. But many also thought that a waifu-themed wallpaper was not something to be ashamed of.

One user said that the student should be more confident in his waifu “by introducing your wife to the audience”, they wrote in response to the original tweet.

The waifu in question is a Super Rare Aircraft Carrier character from the popular mobile game Azur Lane, a side-scrolling shoot ’em up mobile game developed by Shanghai Manjuu and Xiamen Yongshi.

It features historical warships depicted as moe characters and you can collect them by spending (a lot of) money .

What to Know

  • Hands-down easiest: Right-click the image and choose Set as desktop background .
  • Next easiest: go to Start >  Settings > Personalization > Background and choose the background you want to use.

This article explains how to change the desktop background on Windows 10, Windows 8, and Windows 7.

How to Change the Desktop Background

There are several ways to change the desktop background on your computer, and the way you choose may depend on which version of Windows you have .

Right-Click an Open Digital Image

The easiest way to make the change on any version of Windows is to open your favorite digital image, right-click the image, and choose Set as desktop background in the context menu.

In Windows 10, this process is slightly different from Windows 8 and 7 because you can set an image as more than just the desktop background. Double-click an image to open it in the built-in Photos app. As with other versions of Windows, right-click the image and then choose Set as > Set as background .

Right-Click an Image File

Even if the image is not open, you can make it your background. From File Explorer (called Windows Explorer in Windows 7 ), right-click the file you want to use. Then, from the context menu, select Set as desktop background .

Personalize the Desktop

Another way to set a background is to right-click an empty area of the desktop and select  Personalize  from the context menu, or go to Start >  Settings > Personalization > Background .

In Windows 8 or Windows 7, select Desktop background at the bottom of the Settings window before continuing.

From here, select the image you want from the ones offered under Choose your picture , or choose Browse to find an image saved to your PC.

How to Create a Windows 10 Slideshow

Some people prefer to see a number of rotating images on their desktop instead of a single, static image. If you want to create a slideshow for your desktop:

Select  Start >  Settings > Personalization > Background .

In the Background list, select  Slideshow .

A new option appears directly below the drop-down menu called Choose albums for your slideshow . By default, Windows 10 chooses your Pictures album. To change that, select Browse  and navigate to the folder of choice via File Explorer. When you find what you want, select Choose this folder .

When you create a slideshow, you can set how often the change. You can choose to swap pictures every minute or once a day. The default is every 30 minutes. Look for the drop-down menu under Change picture every to adjust this setting.

A little lower down in the same settings window are options to shuffle pictures and to allow slideshows while on battery power—the default is to turn desktop background slideshows off to conserve power.

Change Wallpaper on Windows 11 via Right-click Context Menu

First, locate the image of your choice on your computer whether it’s in the File Explorer or on the desktop, and right-click on it. Then, simply select the ‘Set as desktop background’ option from the context menu.

Note: This method is only for images formats that are supported by Windows. When you right-click on the image file with the unrecognized format, the ‘Set as desktop background’ option won’t be available on the context menu.

Using the Photos Viewer to Set Background

You can also access the Set as background option from the right-click context menu of Microsoft’s Photo app.

Change Wallpaper from File Explorer in Windows 11

Another quickest way to set a background in Windows 11 is through File Explorer. You can directly change Windows 11 wallpaper from the file explorer without the need to navigate through the Settings app. Here’s how you do this:

Open the File Explorer and navigate to the picture that you would like to set as your Windows 11 desktop background. Then, simply select the picture by clicking on it and then click the ‘Set as background’ button in the toolbar at the top.

Remember, this ‘Set as background’ option will only be visible in the toolbar after you select the image.

Set Desktop Background from Web Browser in Windows 11

Some of the Web browsers (like Firefox) allow you to set an image as desktop background straight from the browser without saving or downloading the image. This is useful when you are browsing through pictures on your browser, if you find a picture you like, you can easily set it as your desktop wallpaper. Here’s how you do it:

When you’re browsing the internet on your browser, if you find a picture that you would like to set as your desktop background, right-click on the picture and then select the ‘Set image as desktop background’ option to set that image as your desktop wallpaper.

But, first, you need to open the image in full resolution and then use this option. Otherwise, you’ll only be setting the preview image as the desktop background (which will be in much less resolution and poor quality).

For example, when you’re looking at the pictures of ‘Lofoten Islands, Norway’ in Google, you should not right-click on the image and select ‘Set image as desktop background’ right away.

please remember to change the desktop background before a presentation

If you do, this will only set the preview image as the background which will have poor quality and wrong fit for background. It would look something like this:

please remember to change the desktop background before a presentation

So, you should click on the image to open the image or website that contains the image. Then, right-click on the image on the website as select the ‘Open image in New Tab’ option.

please remember to change the desktop background before a presentation

Once the picture opens in full resolution on the full screen of the browser as shown below, then right-click anywhere on the picture and select ‘Set Image as Desktop Background…’.

If you want to save the image to your computer and set it as background later, select the ‘Save Image As..’ option.

Set Windows 11 Default Wallpapers

Windows 11 has a collection of new preloaded wallpapers which are of 4K resolution (3840×2400) and do not include any wallpapers from its predecessors. The new Default wallpapers are aesthetically designed to match the applied theme and to ensure that they are well in contrast with the theme text.

You can find the default wallpapers under the Recent images in the Background Settings. However, if you already changed the background to images of your own many times, the default wallpapers won’t be accessible from the Settings.

If you can’t find the Windows 11 wallpapers in the Settings, go to the following location, which contains the entire collection of Windows 11 wallpapers:

Open Windows File Explorer by clicking on the icon on the taskbar. Then, you can either enter the above path in the File Explorer search bar and press  Enter or navigate to Local Disk (C:) > Windows > Web . This is where Windows 11 Stores its default Wallpapers including the touch keyboard backgrounds:

please remember to change the desktop background before a presentation

The 4K Folder has two default pictures (light and dark theme pictures) and the Screen folder has some random wallpapers. And the ‘touchkeyboard’ folder has some pictures in the resolution of 2736×1539, which are meant for your Touch Keyboard. If you want to view the entire collection, open the ‘Wallpaper’ folder.

The Wallpaper folder has 5 categories of wallpapers as shown in the screenshot:

  •  Captured Motion
  •  Sunrise
  •  Windows

Now browse through the pictures and when you find the picture you want to set as your desktop wallpaper, select it. Then, you can either right-click the picture and select ‘Set as desktop background’ from the context menu or click the ‘Set as background’ button in the toolbar.

Once your slides are selected, in PowerPoint's ribbon at the top, click the "Design" tab.

On the "Design" tab, from the "Customize" section, select "Format Background."

To the right of PowerPoint's interface, you will see a "Format Background" pane. Here, in the "Fill" section, you will select a custom background for your slides.

Your options are:

You can configure a single custom background and apply it to all the slides in your current presentation. This saves you a lot of time as you do not have to manually edit each slide's background.

To do so, open your presentation with Microsoft PowerPoint. In the app's ribbon at the top, click the "Design" tab.

On the "Design" tab, in the "Customize" section, click "Format Background."

On the right of your screen, a "Format Background" pane will open. In this pane, using the "Fill" section, you will specify a background for all your slides.

The options you can choose from are:

  • Solid Fill : Use this option to apply a solid color fill to all your slides.
  • Gradient Fill : Select this option to apply a gradient color fill to all your slides.
  • Picture or Texture Fill : To use an image or a texture as the background, click this option. You can then click "Insert" to add a picture to use as your background, or click "Texture" to use a texture as your slides' background.
  • Pattern Fill : Click this option to view various patterns that you can use as the background for your presentation.

Once you have configured your background, apply it to all your slides by clicking "Apply to All" at the bottom of the "Format Background" pane.

And instantly, all the slides in your presentation will start using the newly specified background. Happy presenting!

If you often use a specific style for your presentations, it is worth creating a custom PowerPoint template to then base all your presentations on it.

Change the background of slides

In PowerPoint, you can change the slide background to a picture or a color.

You can add a solid or gradient color, a pattern, or an image as the background of a slide or an entire presentation.

Format the slide background with color

On the ribbon, select the Design tab.

At the far-right end, select Format Background .

The Format Background pane opens on the right side of the window.

Under Fill , select Solid fill , Gradient fill , or Pattern fill .

Select a color and other accompanying options, as applicable.

By default, the selections you make apply to the current slide. If you want them to apply to all slides in your file, at the bottom of the pane, select Apply to All .

Format the slide background with a photo

Under Fill , select Picture or texture fill .

Under Picture Source , select Insert.

Choose where you want to get the image from, then navigate to the image, select it, and select Insert .

Adjust other settings as needed, such as the transparency of the image.

In PowerPoint for the web, you can do basic background formatting of one or more slides with a solid color or a picture. To do more advanced formatting, such as adding a color gradient or making a picture transparent, use the desktop version of PowerPoint on Windows or macOS.

You can fill the background with a solid color. PowerPoint for the web doesn't support gradient fills for slide backgrounds.

If you would like to have gradient fills in PowerPoint for the web, please let us know by providing us feedback. See  How do I give feedback on Microsoft Office?  for more information.

On the Design tab, select Background .

Format Background.

Select Solid Fill , then pick a color from the gallery.

Format the background with color.

If you want to have all slides have this same background color, on the Design tab, select Background > Apply to All .

Apply this format to all slides in my presentation.

When you insert a picture as a background, PowerPoint for the web resizes the image as best as it can to fill the entire area of the slide. For best results, choose a picture that has the same orientation as your slides.

Select Insert Picture , then under Picture Background , select either From Device (to select your own picture) or Stock Pictures (to select a picture from the Microsoft image library).

Navigate to the picture you want to use. Select it, then select Open or Insert .

To make all slides have this same background picture, on the Design tab, select Background again, then select Apply to All .

PowerPoint for the web supports the following picture formats: .jpg, .jpeg, .png, .gif, .bmp, .wmf, .emf, .tif, and .tiff.

PowerPoint for the web doesn't have the ability to make a picture transparent. Use the desktop PowerPoint app if you want to make a background picture transparent.

PowerPoint for the web doesn't have the ability to remove a picture's background. Use the desktop PowerPoint app to remove a picture's background.

Remove a slide background

You can remove whatever slide background you currently have by resetting to a solid white background:

Select Solid Fill , then pick White, Background 1 at the upper left corner of the color gallery.

Apply a comprehensive design theme to your presentation

PowerPoint for the web comes with themes —sets of professionally designed colors, layouts, and fonts. After you select a theme, all your slides will adopt that look. For more information, see Apply a colorful theme to your presentation .

Apply a background to all slides

On the Design tab, in Customize , click Format Background .

On the View menu, click Normal , and then in the navigation pane, click the slide or slides that you want to change.

Click Fill , and then click the Solid , Gradient , Picture or Texture , or Pattern option.

Choose the background fills that you want.

Note:  To later remove custom backgrounds and apply the default background for the theme to all slides, click the Solid fill option in Format Background . On the Theme Colors pop-up menu, click Automatic , and then click Apply All .

The slide background is one visual you don’t want to forget about when creating a presentation. Whether a subtle shade, matching color, or image, here’s how to customize the background in Microsoft PowerPoint for one slide or all.

Change the Background for Individual Slides

If you want to change the background for a single slide or give each slide its own look, you can pick from colors, gradients, patterns, and more.

  • Head to the slide you want to change in your slideshow.
  • Go to the Design tab and select Format Background . Alternatively, right-click a blank spot on the slide and pick Format Background .

How to Change the Background in Microsoft PowerPoint image 1

  • When the sidebar opens on the right, you should see the Fill section expanded. If not, use the arrow on the left to display its settings.
  • You can use one of four background styles: solid fill, gradient fill, picture or texture fill, and pattern fill.

How to Change the Background in Microsoft PowerPoint image 2

  • Once you select the fill, you’ll see the options displayed directly beneath. You can choose a solid color, gradient style, insert a picture, or pick a pattern.

How to Change the Background in Microsoft PowerPoint image 3

  • Optionally, check the box for Hide background graphics . This is handy if you’re using a PowerPoint template that provides images in the background.

You’ll see the change apply to the slide immediately, so if you change your mind, you can revert it.

Tip : If you didn’t make any other changes to your slideshow after adjusting the background, you can use the Undo option in the Quick Access Toolbar .

How can I reset the background images I LIKE for windows 10 [duplicate]

Before you point me to the countless answers of how to change backgrounds, here is the above question in DETAIL.

In Windows 10, every morning it comes up with a new photo background asking me if I like the background. If I respond on the upper right part of the screen with a YES, Windows 10 records that I like it and it becomes one of the images in my backgrounds collection and is used in rotation with other images I like.

There were a few images I accidentally said yes to when I meant to say no. Is there a way to reset this rotation to start over or maybe a way I can go back and remove that specific image from my selected images in the collection so that it will no longer be in my collection of backgrounds?

  • You write in your question: "every morning it comes up with a new photo background asking me if I like the background". What do you mean by "it"? Do you have installed some application that do it? –  Leo Chapiro Oct 4, 2016 at 15:23
  • "it" meaning my Windows Machine (version 10). There is no 3rd party. This is what came with my Windows 10. –  Dale Oct 4, 2016 at 15:27
  • 4 Ok, I see, you have activated the Windows Spotlight. Please take a look: superuser.com/questions/1043501/reset-windows-spotlight –  Leo Chapiro Oct 4, 2016 at 15:33

C:\Windows\Web\Wallpaper

There might be multiple folders and pictures, delete what you don't want. If you get trusted installer issues:

  • Go to C:\Windows\Web\
  • Right click on Wallpaper, Properties
  • Go to Security tab
  • Click Advanced
  • Go to Owner Tab
  • Add your own account name instead of TrustedInstaller's
  • check the box Replace owner on sub containers and objects
  • press OK through all your open windows to get back to windows explorer
  • Right click again, Properties
  • Go to security, select your name, click edit
  • Click the allow all checkbox, then OK through everything.

I know this is long but I hope it helps!

Ask a new question

Windows 11, background keep resetting from slideshow to a picture.

I set my background in Windows 11 to a single different picture initially for both of my desktops (I usually keep 2 desktops on my laptop). Then I thought I wanted to set different slideshows for both desktops, then I found out that I could not do that, so I thought of instead setting a single slideshow same for the both. So while it worked, whenever I restart my laptop and change desktop from the opened one to another, both backgrounds get changed back to single pictures. I tried removing one of the desktops and setting the background as slideshow then restart, but then once I again create a new desktop and switch to it, backgrounds get reverted to the single pictures. Why is this happening? and How can I fix this? And can I have different slideshows for different desktops?

11th Nov 2022: To everyone who has the same issue, I wasn't able to fix this issue, currently, I have the same slideshow, on each desktop. Since at the moment I am busy, anyone who has time, please file a report in the feedback hub, and send the link here, for everyone else.

Same issue.

6 people found this reply helpful

Same issue here. It switches from slideshow to picture and from fit to fill, just about every 5 minutes.

12 people found this reply helpful

Same (or similar) problem here!

I have Windows 11, with multiple virtual desktops (meaning the ones that you can switch pressing the WIN+TAB keys) and also multiple displays (a laptop usually connected with two additional monitors). When I start/restart the PC, the background often resets to a single picture, while I configured a "slideshow". The picture is the same for all the desktop and monitors, while the slideshow mode shows different pictures for each monitor, but the same for each desktop (and I'm fine with that).

Additional information: this is not a clean Windows 11 setup, but an upgrade from Windows 10 (I think this is the most common case at the moment). The slideshow was already set as background in Windows 10, and it was working fine before the upgrade.

In a nutshell, I have to restore the slideshow background configuration manually almost every morning, and that's very annoying.
