• Licensure as a registered nurse in the state of Florida is only required if research involves clinical work.
• We highly recommend seeking letters of recommendation from the following individuals: academic nursing faculty or instructor, nursing or clinical supervisor, and PhD-prepared nurse or researcher.
• Competitive letters will be formatted on letter head and physically signed by the professional submitting a recommendation on your behalf.

Important Information:

All admitted nursing students are required to complete a background check, immunization verification, and drug screening. Additionally, students will be required to provide proof of current health insurance. Admitted students will be provided with the steps to complete this process.

There are three entry points to the PhD program:

• BS-PhD (4-5 years of full-time study) 80 credit hours
• MS-PhD (3-4 years of full-time study) 64 credit hours
• DNP-PhD (2-3 years of full-time study) 52 credit hours

Specific requirements are determined on an individual basis by the student’s supervisory committee. Students are to meet with faculty mentor for individual program planning after being selected for admission.

Curriculum Overview

• Core – 40 Credit hours Required for all PhD pathways
• Content area and additional coursework – 25 credit hours Post-bachelor’s requirement only
• Advanced Directed Research – 3 credit hours Post-bachelor’s and post-master’s requirement only
• Cognate – 9 credit hours Post-master’s requirement only
• Dissertation – 12 credit hours Required for all PhD pathways

Format: We offer live classes on the Tampa campus each semester in conjunction with Canvas for online learning. Please see our PhD Program Plans for more information.

Teaching Certification: PhD students who take the 13 credit hour Nursing Certificate Program are eligible to sit for the certification exam offered by the National League for Nursing (NLN) Certification for Nurse Educators (CNE) program. Students who have master’s degrees in nursing would be eligible to sit for the certification exam after completing 9 nursing education credit hours. Students who hold bachelor’s degrees would sit for the exam after being awarded their PhD degree.

• Applicants will receive an eight digit university ID number ( U Number) upon submission of the university application. This will be required to complete the NursingCAS application for the PhD program.
• Note: Do not upload supplemental documentation; please bypass these sections of the application (e.g., test scores, transcripts, letters of recommendation, and personal statements). All supplementary materials, transcripts, letters of recommendation, and supporting documents should only be sent and uploaded to the NursingCAS application.

2. Submit a NursingCAS Application

• All documentation (e.g., transcripts, resume, letters of recommendation, certifications, etc.) must be uploaded to NursingCAS and applications must reach the verified status by the deadline for applications to be considered.

Interview Requirement: In addition to fulfilling the application requirements, a personal interview with faculty members of the PhD Admissions, Curriculum, and Academic Affairs Committee will be required.

International Applicants

• Foreign Transcripts: All coursework and degrees completed outside the United States require a course-by-course evaluation from an approved evaluating agency. Please note this process could take three to six months. A list of foreign transcript evaluation services is provided by the USF Office of International Admissions . The Florida Board of Nursing maintains its own list of approved evaluating agencies . Transcripts from foreign institutions that have gone through an official transcript evaluation service must be received by NursingCAS electronically or in their original sealed envelopes by the application deadline. Note: NursingCAS will not accept foreign transcripts that have not gone through an official evaluation process with an approved vendor. Please complete the evaluation process before sending transcripts from a foreign institution.
• English Language: Applicants from countries where English is not the official language must demonstrate English proficiency. Please visit the USF Office of International Admissions for completion details.
• Scholarships/Funding: Students that require university funds and/or scholarships to attend the PhD in Nursing Science program must identify and qualify for funding sources offered by the College of Nursing. Additional screening steps may be required for students coming from a country of concern. Please visit the USF HR website for more information on the screening process. Students who do not clear HR screening will not be eligible for university funding.

International students need to prepare some additional admissions materials along with the rest of their applications:

• TOEFL : Required if you have not graduated from a college or university in which all instruction is conducted in English. Please send scores to school code 9828. Your official score report must be received by the application deadline.
• Transcript Evaluation : International transcripts must be evaluated by the  World Education Services (WES) . Evaluations should include a course-by-course analysis indicating the type of degree received, the U.S. equivalency of the degree, the graduation date, and a cumulative grade point average. Please be sure to upload all evaluations to your online application. The transcript evaluation must be received by the application deadline, as original transcripts from your international university cannot be used in place of the transcript evaluation.
• Nursing Credential Evaluation : If you have a nursing credential from outside the United States, you will need to have your credentials evaluated. Please visit CGFNS International, Inc.  to obtain an evaluation.

Beginning in Fall 2021, Columbia Nursing will fund international PhD students. Funding includes tuition and fees, Student Health Services health insurance, and a stipend. International applicants are encouraged to visit the Columbia University  International Students & Scholars Office  for information about housing, Visas, and other topics.

Student housing is not guaranteed to any Columbia Nursing student and is lottery-based. However, first priority is given to international students. International students interested in on-campus housing should complete a housing application by the deadlines posted on the On-Campus Housing website.

UC College of Nursing ranks highly in U.S. News & World Report rankings

The UC College of Nursing's programs were once again recognized by U.S. News & World Report's 2024 Best Graduate Nursing Programs rankings.

The rankings — pulled from surveying programs offered by public, private and for-profit institutions — are based on factors such as graduation rates, academic and career support services offered to students and admissions selectivity. The College's rankings include:

• No. 11 Best Nurse Anesthesia Program , climbing 11 positions from the previous ranking and placing in the top 9% of accredited programs in the country
• No. 37 Nurse Midwifery Program
• No. 41 Master of Science in Nursing , placing in the top 7% of accredited programs in the country
• No. 49 Doctor of Nursing Practice , climbing 13 positions from last year and placing in the top 13% of accredited programs in the country

NYU Meyers is the eighth best nursing school in the nation for master’s programs, up five spots over last year, according to the 2024  U.S. News & World Repor t Best Graduate School rankings.

The rankings, released today, assessed both master's programs and Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) programs on their research activity, faculty resources, and student excellence. The rankings also include the results of surveys of nursing school deans and healthcare professionals.

NYU Meyers’ overall master’s degree ranking was the highest among nursing schools in New York State. In addition, several master’s specialty programs earned top recognition: Meyers came in at #7 in the Best Acute Care Nurse Practitioner category and #12 for Best Family Nurse Practitioner programs.

At the doctoral level, NYU Meyers ranked #15 overall in Best Nursing Schools for doctor of nursing practice programs, and for the Best DNP Family Nurse Practitioner program.

Nursing graduate programs ranked top 100 in U.S. News graduate school rankings

The School of Nursing is proud is see two nursing graduate programs ranked in the top 100 programs in the latest rankings from U.S. News and World Report .

The Master of Nursing program is ranked at No. 82 out of almost 600 universities ranked, and the Doctor of Nursing Practice program ranked at No. 85 out of 389 universities. These rankings look at hundreds of universities, but when you break it down to just within the state of Wisconsin, our Master of Nursing program is the top program at a public university in Wisconsin, and our Doctor of Nursing Practice program is ranked second for public universities in the state.

The rankings are based on two types of data: expert opinion about program excellence and statistical indicators that measure the quality of a school’s faculty, research and students, and students’ post-graduate outcomes.

PhD programs in nursing in the United States: visibility of American Association of Colleges of Nursing core curricular elements and emerging areas of science

Preparing nursing doctoral students with knowledge and skills for developing science, stewarding the discipline, and educating future researchers is critical. This study examined the content of 120 U.S. PhD programs in nursing as communicated on program websites in 2012. Most programs included theory, research design, and statistics courses. Nursing inquiry courses were evidenced on only half the websites. Course work or research experiences in informatics were mentioned on 22.5% of the websites; biophysical measurement and genetics/genomics were mentioned on fewer than 8% of program websites. Required research experiences and instruction in scientific integrity/research ethics were more common when programs had Institutional Training Award funding (National Institutes of Health T32 mechanism) or were located at a university with a Clinical and Translational Science Award. Changes in education for the next generation of PhD students are critically needed to support advancement of nursing science.

In the 2024 U.S. News & World Report Best Schools Rankings, the Duke University School of Nursing achieved remarkable accolades including: #3 Best Nursing Schools, Master’s and #3 Best Nursing Schools, Doctor of Nursing Practice.

Uri college of nursing graduate programs ranked among nation’s best.

Doctor of Nursing Practice ranks 66 nationally; Master’s program remains in top 50

KINGSTON, R.I. — April 9, 2024 — The University of Rhode Island College of Nursing graduate programs are again ranked among the top of nursing colleges in the country, making an impressive year-over-year rise, according to the latest U.S. News & World Report rankings.

The College’s Doctor of Nursing Practice program is tied at number 66 of 354 nursing schools across the country with a DNP program, up from number 86 last year, according to the rankings released April 9. The College’s master’s program also continued its impressive performance in recent years. For the third year in a row, the program ranks among the top 50 in the nation, slotting in at number 48 among 603 nursing schools surveyed.

“We are committed to providing an excellent education to all our students, including our graduate students who benefit from our top-notch facilities and some of the best educators in their field,” said Dean Danny Willis . “Education is transformative, and students are not just a number to us. We get to know them and facilitate their professional and personal success. It is very rewarding to see the College’s efforts recognized on a national level.”

U.S. News & World Report , among the leading authorities in college and university rankings, surveyed 648 nursing schools with master’s or doctoral programs accredited by either the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing or the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education. The publication determined each school’s overall rank using 15 distinct ranking factors, including faculty credentials, student-to-faculty ratio, faculty research prowess and nursing practice experience, assessment scores from peer institutions, and more.

The URI College of Nursing met and exceeded the standards as it continues to increase its offerings at the undergraduate and graduate level. About one-third of the URI College of Nursing’s faculty members are recognized Fellows in national nursing organizations, including the American Academy of Nursing, for their distinguished academic achievements. Dozens of URI students were inducted in the Sigma Theta Tau honor society for nursing last year, and a handful were inducted into the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi. The number of faculty publications, funded external grants and committed gifts to the College have all increased over the last five years as the College continues to have major impacts on health and health care.

The advancements the College has made are obvious not only in the graduate programs, but in its undergraduate offerings as well. The College’s B.S. in Nursing program tied at number 67 out of 656 programs in the country for the second year in a row, in rankings released Sept. 17. The College has made an impressive rise in the rankings, climbing from number 96 just two years ago, the first year the publication ranked undergraduate programs, to 67 last year. Johns Hopkins graduate programs again ranked among nation's best

'u.s. news & world report' includes 38 jhu programs among the top 10 in the u.s. in its annual rankings, including no. 1 ranked programs in nursing and public health.

Johns Hopkins University has 38 graduate schools, academic programs, and specialties ranked among the top 10 in the nation, including nine with No. 1 rankings, according to the latest edition of "Best Graduate Schools" from U.S. News & World Report , published earlier today.

Two schools at Hopkins—the Bloomberg School of Public Health and the School of Nursing —earned No. 1 rankings overall, and the School of Education entered the top 10, according to U.S. News & World Report .

Portions of the publication's annual list were released today but rankings for schools of medicine and engineering were delayed and will be released at a later date.

Among the new rankings released today:

The School of Nursing's DNP program ranked No. 1 for the third year in a row. Its master's degree programs tied at No. 1, up from No. 2 last year. In gerontology, the school moved up two spots to No. 1 for primary care, and up one spot to No. 2 for acute care. In other specialty areas, the School of Nursing's doctoral programs ranked:

• Psychiatric/mental health: No. 1
• Family: No. 3 (tied)
• Leadership: No. 4 (tied)
• Nursing Anesthesia: No. 36 (tie)

Public Health

The Bloomberg School retained its longtime No. 1 overall ranking among public health programs—it has held the top spot since 1994, the year the rankings began. In specialty areas, the Bloomberg School ranked:

• Environmental Health Sciences: No. 1
• Epidemiology: No. 1
• Health Policy and Management (Public Health): No. 1
• Social and Behavioral Sciences: No. 1
• Biostatistics: No. 2

Johns Hopkins tied at No. 8 in the Education category, up from No. 13 last year. The school also tied at No. 23 in higher education administration programs.

Public Affairs

Overall, Johns Hopkins programs in public affairs tied at No. 39. In subcategories, Johns Hopkins tied at No. 6 in Health Policy and Management (Public Affairs), No. 11 in International/Global Policy and Administration, and tied at No. 35 in Public Policy Analysis.

U.S. News & World Report updates some of its rankings each year and republishes the most recent rankings in other areas. Among the republished rankings for Hopkins, which are still current:

Biological Sciences

Hopkins is tied for No. 6 overall with six top 10 specialty rankings:

• Molecular biology: No. 3 (tie)
• Cell biology: No. 4
• Neuroscience: No. 4 (tie)
• Immunology: No. 5
• Genetics, genomics, and bioinformatics: No. 6 (tie)
• Biochemistry, biophysics, and structural biology: No. 8

Biostatistics

Hopkins is ranked No. 1 (tie) for Biostatistics at the doctoral level. (Note: U.S. News & World Report also ranks biostatistics as a sub-category of public health, where Hopkins is No. 2.)

The university is tied at No. 20 in Chemistry and ranks No. 9 in the Biochemistry subcategory.

Computer Science

The university is tied for No. 24 overall and tied at No. 21 in the specialty of Artificial Intelligence.

Earth Sciences

The university is tied at No. 30 in Earth Sciences.

Johns Hopkins' program in economics is tied at No. 22.

English tied at No. 13 overall with the following specialty rankings:

• Literary criticism and theory: No. 3
• British literature: No. 10 (tie)
• American literature after 1865: No. 17

Health Care Management

The university is No. 7.

Johns Hopkins ranks No. 10 overall, with the following specialty rankings:

• African-American history: No. 3 (tie)
• Cultural history: No. 4 (tie)
• U.S. Colonial history: No. 5 (tie)
• Women's history: No. 6 (tie)
• African history: No. 7 (tie)

The university's graduate program in psychology is tied at No. 12 overall and tied at No. 5 in the subcategory of behavioral neuroscience.

Overall, sociology is tied at No. 29. The sub-category of sociology of population is tied at No. 17.

BUFFALO, N.Y. – Several schools within the University at Buffalo, New York’s flagship, are ranked among the top nationwide in U.S. News & World Report’s Best Graduate Schools rankings , released this morning.

The School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences is among the top 20 in the country, coming in at No. 19 overall and 18th among public universities.

“This achievement is a testament to our relentless pursuit of groundbreaking research, transformative discoveries, and unwavering commitment to the success of our students,” said Gary Pollack, PhD, dean of the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences. “Our top 20 ranking reaffirms our steadfast commitment to cultivating the next generation of pharmacy and pharmaceutical science leaders who will push the boundaries of scientific inquiry, drive innovation in patient care, and elevate the standards of pharmaceutical research on a global scale.”

The School of Social Work is once again in the top 25, coming in at 24th nationally and No. 13 among public universities.

The School of Nursing’s Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program moved up 11 spots to 34th in the country and No. 24 among public universities. In addition, the nursing anesthesia program was ranked 22nd.

“We are immensely proud to rank among the best DNP programs in the United States,” says School of Nursing Dean Annette Wysocki, PhD. “Our commitment to exceptional nursing education cultivates discipline of the mind to educate highly discerning nurse practitioners, who are indispensable in addressing the nation’s critical shortage of primary care providers. Quality nursing education remains paramount in safeguarding the health and wellness of our community.”

UB’s Graduate School of Education moved up four spots to No. 54 in Best Education Schools. Among public universities, the Graduate School of Education ranks 42nd. “Our steady climb in the rankings over the years is a testament to the hard work and high-quality research of GSE faculty,” says dean Suzanne Rosenblith, PhD.

The School of Public Health and Health Professions moved up four spots, to No. 46 nationally and No. 29 among public universities. Its programs in occupational therapy (41) and physical therapy (74) were also ranked, as was biostatistics (22).

Meanwhile, the School of Law moved up 17 places to No. 108 among Best Law Schools nationwide and 56th among public universities.

The School of Management’s MBA program came in at No. 74 in Best Business Schools and 38th among public universities, making it the highest rated business school within SUNY.

In addition, UB’s graduate programs in audiology (22) and speech language pathology (32) were also ranked this year.
