The pet’s ability to form attachments, the significance of sacrifice to love, works cited.
Love can be considered to be a strong emotional attachment between individuals or animals. It entails displaying attributes such as selfless loyalty, compassion, kindness and affection to others. This is a condition experienced by human beings and animals. Over the years, there have been questions as to whether animals are capable to love.
There are arguments that animals can bond strongly with each other. Scientists argue that the brain of an animal is similar to that of human beings. This concerns the tendencies to show love (Bekoff and Goodal, 23). The human race should be mindful when interacting with animals because they are also capable of showing love. It is evident that animals can forego their needs to form bonds with their masters.
For many people, dogs and cats are considered as pets. In this case, the pets have the ability to form attachments. This is confirmed by reports that the dog has been man’s best friend for a very long time. Since time immemorial, dogs were not only used to follow a scent or emergency food source, but they were also noted for their great companionship.
In this case, the bond between the human race and dog species has endured the test of time. In this case, the dogs can have the aspect of love in the same manner as human beings. On many occasions, the human brain releases a pleasure chemical to signify excitement.
This trend has also been found to be prevalent in certain animals such as dogs. In dogs, there are some emotional displays that they use to depict feelings towards their owners. These include drooping ears, wagging of their tails, and drawing back of the lips (Fogle, par. 13).
There are people who are opposed to the proposition of emotional attachment between animals and their owners. They often pose the question as to why the animals react the same way even when they are offered to new owners. They also assert that since the dogs can go after a piece of meat, it should not be the basis to conclude that dogs are emotional beings.
On the other hand, scientists have explained that dogs elicit different reactions when insinuating pain or territorial issues (Fogle, par. 16). This is used to explain that dogs might feel different levels of emotions. However, the inner calm and satisfaction that are depicted by dogs are similar to that of humans. As the case in humans, this reaction is elicited irrespective of material rewards.
The relationship between pets and humans explains many issues. For instance, to many social species, love is an essential ingredient in fostering good working and living relationships. Pets have evolved over the years. For instance, the cat species have gradually evolved into solitary creatures.
With pets, the issue of love and dependency are differentiated by a thin line. In this case, through early learning, pets derive affection tendencies and the bond created may be as a result of love. However, the relationships are affirmed from the aspect of dependencies (Fogle, par. 17).
The definition of love has to include sacrifice. This is the willingness to forego one’s interest on behalf of someone else’s. The dog has been known to surpass this requirement. Once the owner is in potential danger, the dog tries to remedy the situation even putting itself in mortal danger.
The idea behind a pet’s behavior is companionship. The fact that there is synchrony between the ideas of the human and the pet indicates that there is a close attachment that goes beyond material niceties. For humans, they seek pets for their playful and loyal personalities. Therefore, there exists a high degree of social interaction between humans and their pets (Fogle, par. 18 – 21).
It is evident that animals are capable to forego their needs to form bonds with their masters. For many, love is the ability to forego one’s needs and fulfil the needs of others. Pets are often household animals that are kept for companionship. Scientists have explained that animals have emotions like human beings.
Pets are considered to show love to their masters by going to extreme extents in protecting their owner’s well-being. However, this thesis has elicited a number of questions that are yet to be answered. For instance, should the fact, that dogs can go after a piece of meat, be the basis to conclude that dogs are emotional beings?
The line between love, attachment, and mutual dependency is very thin. It is true that animals have brains that function. Therefore, with the passage of time, animals will tend to bond with their owner.
As such, it will be difficult to distinguish between love, attachments, and those that are due to dependency and instinct. However, regardless of the motive behind such attachments, human beings should always bear in mind that animals are emotional beings and should be handled with care.

An article that you’ll have to write is for publication in a magazine or website . So, like most articles in magazines it must be entertaining and informative, therefore , you need to keep your reader engaged and interested from start to finish!
There will also be some kind of questions for you to answer. Below you can see a sample exam task:
What kind of films do you enjoy? |
Check our Writing Guide below – to see how to write an article in detail.
Any article in the B1 Preliminary (PET) exam can be broken up into four parts:
– start with an engaging question for the reader |
– answer questions given in the task |
– give a final comment |
Practice, write & improve, b1 preliminary (pet) article: writing guide.
We will use this example exam task :
You see this notice on an English-language website
What kind of films do you enjoy? |
Write your article .
Task analysis is very simple. All you have to do is two things:
Firstly , find the questions you have to answer in your task.
|
Secondly , find the topic of the article (which in this example is Films & Cinema)
So, now you need to brainstorm all the vocabulary that you can think of related to films.
For example: animated, romantic films, a big fan, drama, adventure movies, popcorn, screen, Netflix
If you prepare some words in advance, it will be much easier for you to write an article!
Every excellent article starts with a good title , don’t worry though it doesn’t have to be super special or super interesting. It is okay if your title is simple and just gives a general idea of what the article is about.
Here you can see three examples of a title
Home cinema or the big screen?
How to best watch the films you love?
Home or cinema — How do you watch your favourite films?
As you can see two titles started with how … – how – to articles are just very popular so it is good idea to use that form for your title.
Step 3: introduction.
The role of the introduction is mainly to catch the reader’s attention , it can be done in the simplest way by asking a question. Why this way is good? Because at the same time, you will show the examiners that you can use the p resent perfect tense.
Here you can see example introduction
Have you ever screamed (present perfect) during a horror film? Or have you watched (present perfect) a comedy and laughed until you cry?
Here you answer the main questions that we identified in Step 1.
Remember these paragraphs should be the longest in your text and they should contain most of the information.
Also, we use the vocabulary that we prepared earlier in Step 1.
animated, romantic films, a big fan, drama, adventure movies, popcorn, screen, Netflix
See the example answer below, with additional annotations you may find useful:
I know many people who love animated or romantic films , but for me, there is nothing better than an amazing drama or adventure movie (answer 1) like ‘Indiana Jones’ because I’m a big fan of stories with fascinating plot.
In my opinion, watching a film at home isn’t the same a s going to the cinema (answer 2) to enjoy a great movie on a huge screen with popcorn and cola . (answer 2) If it wasn’t so expensive, I would go every week.
– vocabulary related to topic of films/cinema
– interesting grammar
Finish your article with a nice final sentence. It doesn’t have to be anything special you can simply summarize your article or you can also try to be a little bit funny or end in a more surprising way.
Everybody loves films, I think you can enjoy them anywhere, even if not at the cinema, it’s still Netflix!
Remember: the more interesting your article is the higher your marks might get!

Students are often asked to write an essay on Cats As Pets in their schools and colleges. And if you’re also looking for the same, we have created 100-word, 250-word, and 500-word essays on the topic.
Let’s take a look…
Why cats are good pets.
Cats make wonderful pets for many reasons. They are small, so they fit well in houses and apartments. Cats clean themselves, which means they usually don’t need baths. They also use a litter box for their bathroom needs, making them easy to care for. Cats enjoy playing, which can be fun for their owners.
Taking care of a cat means giving them food, water, and love. Cats need to visit a vet for check-ups to stay healthy. They also need a scratching post to keep their claws in shape. Spending time with your cat and petting it helps create a strong bond.
Cats can be very loving and often form close friendships with their owners. They can sense when you’re sad and may come to snuggle with you. Cats have a soft purr that is calming and can make you feel better. Having a cat as a friend can bring a lot of joy.
Why cats make great pets.
Cats are one of the most popular pets in the world. They are small, furry animals that live with people in their homes. Many people love cats because they are good companions and are easy to take care of. In this essay, we will talk about why cats are good pets for families and individuals.
Good company.
Cats are known for being good friends to their owners. They like to play and cuddle, which can make people feel happy and loved. Cats often sit on laps or next to their owners, purring, which is a sound they make when they are content. This can create a peaceful feeling in the home.
Having a cat can also be good for your health. Stroking a cat’s fur can make you feel calm and lower stress. Playing with a cat can be a fun way to get some exercise. Studies have shown that having a cat can even lower the chance of having a heart attack.
In conclusion, cats are wonderful pets that are easy to care for, provide great company, and can improve your health. This is why many people choose to have a cat as a pet in their home.
Introduction to cats as pets.
Cats are one of the most popular pets in the world. Many people choose to have cats in their homes because they are small, clean, and can be very loving. Cats have been living with humans for thousands of years. They were even worshipped as gods in ancient Egypt! Today, cats are cherished members of many families, providing companionship and joy to people of all ages.
Cats are known for being independent animals. This means they can be left alone for a few hours and they will be okay. They don’t need to go outside for walks like dogs do, which can be very handy for busy families or people living in apartments. Cats use a litter box inside the house, which they learn to use very quickly, often when they are just kittens.
Taking care of a cat is not too hard, but it is important. Cats need to eat cat food, which can be bought at most stores. They also need fresh water every day. It’s important to clean their litter box regularly to keep the house smelling nice and to keep the cat healthy.
Cats also need to play and exercise. They love to chase toys and climb on cat trees, which helps them stay active and happy. Giving a cat toys that mimic hunting, like toy mice or feathers on a string, can be a good way for them to play.
Cats can form a strong bond with their owners. They might show their love by sitting on your lap, purring, or following you around the house. Some cats are more cuddly, while others might be more playful. Each cat has its own personality, which makes them unique and fun pets.
Cats can also be good for your health. Petting a cat can make you feel calm and less stressed. Some studies even say that having a cat can lower your chance of heart problems because they help you relax.

My pet dog is a pug. It is fawn in colour and has a small built. We have named it Swigi. It has been with us since the last 2 years. I still remember the day me and my sister went to the pet shop with my father to bring it home. I somehow wanted to pet a cat but my elder sister, Riya is almost crazy about dogs and was adamant that we get a dog as a pet. Other members of my family also believed that keeping a dog as a pet was a better choice and so a cute little one month old pug came home with us that day and became a part of our family.
Though everyone in the family takes care of Swigi, my sister is especially particular about its cleanliness, vaccinations and eating habits. We make Swigi bath twice a week. It is actually my favourite time of the week. We take it to the terrace and bathe him with a pipe. We make sure it gets its food on time and goes for stroll twice every day. Swigi also accompanies us everywhere we go.
Swigi is quite an active dog and loves playing with ball. It is super fun playing with it.
My pet dog, Barney is a Labrador. It is light brown in colour and has a strong built. Having a Labrador as a pet serves a double purpose. You do not only get a great friend who is always ready to play with you but it also acts as a security guard for your home. Our home is a more secure place because of the presence of Barney.
Participation in Dog Show
Many people bring home pets and forget about them. We aren’t among those. We take good care of Barney and always love involving it in different activities. It has been with us since the last 5 years and we have made it participate in three dog shows since then. We got it trained for these shows and it made us proud by winning prizes in all these events. At the time of the first event, Barney was just 10 months old. It was hyper active and won the hurdle race. During the second event, it was 2 years old won the bird hunt game. In the third event, it again participated in a race and came third. Barney was 4 years old then.
My Pet Dog is Very Vigilant
Barney remains vigilant all the time. It barks at the sound of any hustle near the home especially at night. It has a strong smelling sense and grows suspicious if it experiences any strange or unfamiliar smell. Dogs are extremely faithful and want nothing but the best for their masters. Barney is no exception. It is very protective about our family and thus guards our house at all times.
I love spending time with Barney. It makes me forget all my tensions and worries. It stands near the front door waiting for me when it is time for me to come home from school and wags its tail as soon as it sees me. We are both extremely delighted to see each other.
I have an adorable Dachshund as my pet. It is an extremely lively dog and always keeps us on toes whenever we are out to play with it. We have named it Buddy and it indeed is our best Buddy. Dachshunds are very friendly and cheerful. Buddy has gelled along extremely well with our family and loves all of us dearly. We also love it with all our heart.
My Pet Dog’s Features
With their long and low bodies, Dachshunds look quite different from the other breeds of dogs. Here is how my Buddy looks like and behaves:
Dachshunds are hyper active and always keen on playing different games. Buddy particularly loves playing with the ball. So every evening we take it out for around half an hour and indulge him in this activity. It is not only fun for Buddy but an extremely amazing experience for me and my brother too.
Buddy also loves travelling. We often go for weekend outings and Buddy is always super excited to go along with us. Since it is small in size, it is not a hassle to take it along. It does not even require much food which makes it quite travel-friendly.
It has been a year that we have brought him home and our friends and cousins have started visiting us all the more since then. A cheerful soul that it is, everyone is fond of it and wants to spend time with it.
We mostly keep it tied with a chain when it is home. My mother particularly makes it a point that Buddy is tied with its chain near the balcony. This is because the moment we untie it, it runs around the house breaking every single thing that comes its way.
Pet dogs are fun to be around and especially if it is a Dachshund, you can never get bored. Each day seems exciting and fun in its company. Buddy is the lifeline of our family.
When I was young, we had a Doberman as a pet. It became a part of my family even before I was born. So, I knew him from the time I was born. Doberman have a strong sixth sense and always remain vigilant. However, you can see their soft side when they are in the company of little kids and I have experienced this side of my pet Doberman whom we lovingly called, Bruno.
Why My Parents Decided to Pet a Dog?
My parents shifted to Goa soon after their marriage. They found a house on rent. It was a beautiful house that was well-suited for a family of two. However, the only problem was that the house stood aloof. It was at a distance from the other houses in the vicinity. In order to ensure the safety and security of my mother as my father went to the office, it was decided to bring home a pet dog. They decided to go for a Doberman as it is a fearless, brave and sturdy dog. Owing to this nature, Doberman dogs are also preferred in police and military services all around the world.
My mother was already fond of dogs and Bruno became her best friend in the new city. Since, Doberman require exercise every day, she took it for walk twice every day. My dad also enjoyed its company. Bruno grew extremely fond of me as soon as I was born and guarded me all the time. It also played with me.
Why We Had to Give Away Our Doberman?
I was extremely attached to Bruno and so was my mother. However, we had to give it away as my father got a good job opportunity in the United States and we had to shift there for two years. With heavy heart, we gave him to one of our neighbours who gladly took it home. We often called them up to ask for Bruno’s well being.
How I Found An Indian Spitz?
We shifted back to India after two years however, this time to a different city. I wanted to keep a pet dog again but my mother was not keen on it. However, it seemed like God heard my wish and fulfilled it.
One day when I was walking back home from school, I saw a Spitz struggling to get its leg out of a cycle tyre. I immediately went to help it. It was someone’s pet but seemed like it had lost its way. I helped it get rid of the tyre and gave a pat on its head. Spitzs are known to be quite affectionate. It began licking my arm. I looked around for its master but could not find anyone. As I began walking home, it started following me. I kept taking it back to the place I had found it for weeks in the hope to find its master but did not find anyone. Since then, it stays with us. I have named it Jiggles.
Dogs are very loving and caring. They shower love and are faithful to their masters. It is an amazing feeling to have a dog as a pet.
I have a pet dog named Roger. It is a German shepherd and it has been a part of my family since the last 3 years. It is very warm, friendly and playful. However, outsiders often find it dangerous. This is because of its built and colour. It is vigilant and guards our house all the time.
Why I wanted to keep a Pet Dog?
Everyone in my family is fond of Roger. We all treat him like a family member. We cannot imagine life without him. However, I still remember the time when I wanted to keep a pet dog and all my family members were against the idea. I was 8 years old that time and my friend, Aanya owned a very cute little pug. She always brought it to the park. Whenever I visited her place, I saw her playing with it. Both of them looked so happy and loved each other’s company. Many a times, I called Aanya to play with me at my home but she refused saying she was busy feeding or bathing Roger. I felt really bad and wished that I too had a dog as a company. It is then that I decided to bring home a pet dog.
How I struggled to get My Pet Dog?
I knew I wanted a dog as a pet but I wasn’t aware that it would be such a struggle for me to convince my parents to get one home. As soon as, the thought of keeping a pet dog came into my mind, I rushed to my mom and told her that I want to get one home. My mother just laughed and dismissed my request with a pat on my cheek. I repeated my wish and she again took it lightly. This infuriated me and I told her that I really wanted a pet. It was then that my mother realized that I was serious about it. So she made me sit and explained as to why we could not keep a pet.
Both my parents are working. Though my grandparents live with us, they are old and taking care of a pet would have been too much to ask from them. Besides, my brother was a toddler then and my mother feared that he might catch infection. She tried to explain all these points to me. But I did not listen to any of her explanations. I went to my grandmother and requested her to convince mom to get a pet dog. My grandmother also tried to explain the same points. However, I kept convincing her for days and she finally agreed to take care of the dog for half the day until I came home from school. The rest was all my responsibility.
Somehow, I also convinced my father. Since he has a liking for dogs, convincing him was not that difficult. So finally my mother had to agree. We went to a nearby pet shop and my heart went drooling over this 2 months old German shepherd who was sleeping peacefully in a small cage. I knew at once that I wanted to keep him.
Roger won everyone’s Heart
Roger was so small and cute that almost everyone in my family fell in love with it as soon as I brought him home. My mother who detested the idea of bringing a pet home also found it cute and grew fond of it over the time. Dogs love babies and are very protective about them. Roger and my younger brother thus became friends almost instantly. Super excited about including Roger in the family, I told all my friends about it the same day.
Roger has become an inseparable part of our lives today and I just love it. Dogs are really adorable. I feel that everyone should keep a pet dog.

Readers discuss veterinary costs, stray vs. domestic dogs, cat behavior and grieving loss.
To the Editor:
Re “ How Much Is Your Pet’s Life Worth? ” (Pets special section, June 30):
Fifteen years ago I left my position as a board member at our local S.P.C.A. shelter and started a group called No Kill Lehigh Valley, now known as the Fund for Veterinary Care. Our mission is to raise money to pay for veterinary care for animals whose families cannot afford it.
While at the shelter, I witnessed people dropping off beloved pets for relinquishment because they were sick or injured and the family could not afford veterinary care. This was a horrible situation for everyone concerned — especially the animal that, on top of being sick or injured, now found itself in a strange and scary place without the only humans it knew and loved.
Fifteen years later the need for our services has grown as the cost of veterinary care has increased. Every day I talk to people who are distraught, often in tears, sometimes hysterical. Their pet is part of their family, or the only family they have. And they are watching it suffer. These are people with few resources, often on disability or unemployed, frequently without transportation or any support.
I am also a social worker. I have seen numerous situations where the only thing that stands between a patient and suicide is their dog or cat. Companion animals are incredibly important, and their value to humans is growing.
I don’t begrudge the cost of veterinary care. My daughter is a vet, and I have seen how difficult and expensive it is to achieve that degree. The job is extremely demanding. She has coped with people raging, sobbing, desperate for help.
There is a need for more organizations like mine that can raise money locally through charitable giving to cope with this growing crisis. Animals will continue to be a vital part of human life. We must acknowledge this and provide the care they need.

A compelling personal statement is a critical component of an Ivy League application, as it offers students the unique opportunity to showcase their personality, experiences, and aspirations. Kickstarting the writing process in the summer can give students a critical advantage in the admissions process, allowing them more time to brainstorm, edit, and polish standout essays. However, as students begin drafting their essays this summer, they should bear in mind that selecting the right topic is crucial to writing a successful essay. Particularly for students with Ivy League aspirations, submitting an essay that is cliche, unoriginal, or inauthentic can make the difference between standing out to admissions officers or blending into the sea of other applicants.
As ambitious students embark on the college application process, here are the personal statement topics they should avoid:
Many students overcome significant hurdles by the time they begin the college application process, and some assume that the grisliest and most traumatic stories will attract attention and sympathy from admissions committees. While vulnerability can be powerful, sharing overly personal or sensitive information can make readers uncomfortable and shift focus away from a student’s unique strengths. Students should embrace authenticity and be honest about the struggles they have faced on their path to college, while still recognizing that the personal statement is a professional piece of writing, not a diary entry. Students should first consider why they want to share a particular tragic or traumatic experience and how that story might lend insight into the kind of student and community member they will be on campus. As a general rule, if the story will truly enrich the admissions committee’s understanding of their candidacy, students should thoughtfully include it; if it is a means of proving that they are more deserving or seeking to engender pity, students should consider selecting a different topic. Students should adopt a similar, critical approach as they write about difficult or sensitive topics in their supplemental essays, excluding unnecessary detail and focusing on how the experience shaped who they are today.
Travel experiences can be enriching, but essays that merely recount a trip to a foreign country without deeper reflection often fall flat. Additionally, travel stories can often unintentionally convey white saviorism , particularly if students are recounting experiences from their charity work or mission trips in a foreign place. If a student does wish to write about an experience from their travels, they should prioritize depth not breadth—the personal statement is not the place to detail an entire itinerary or document every aspect of a trip. Instead, students should focus on one specific and meaningful experience from their travels with vivid detail and creative storytelling, expounding on how the event changed their worldview, instilled new values, or inspired their future goals.
Ivy League and other top colleges are looking for students who are introspective and teachable—no applicant is perfect (admissions officers know this!). Therefore, it’s crucial that students be aware of their strengths and weaknesses, and open about the areas in which they hope to grow. They should avoid grandiose narratives in which they cast themselves as flawless heroes. While students should seek to put their best foot forward, depicting themselves as protagonists who single-handedly resolve complex issues can make them appear exaggerated and lacking in humility. For instance, rather than telling the story about being the sole onlooker to stand up for a peer being bullied at the lunch table, perhaps a student could share about an experience that emboldened them to advocate for themselves and others. Doing so will add dimension and dynamism to their essay, rather than convey a static story of heroism.
Best 5% interest savings accounts of 2024, 4. the plan for world peace.
Similarly, many students feel compelled to declare their intention to solve global issues like world hunger or climate change. While noble, these proclamations can come across as unrealistic and insincere, and they can distract from the tangible achievements and experiences that a student brings to the table. Instead, applicants should focus on demonstrable steps they’ve taken or plan to take within their local community to enact positive change, demonstrating their commitment and practical approach to making a difference. For instance, instead of stating a desire to eradicate poverty, students could describe their extended involvement in a local charity and how it has helped them to discover their values and actualize their passions.
While sports can teach valuable lessons, essays that focus solely on athletic achievements or the importance of a particular game can be overdone and lack depth. Admissions officers have read countless essays about students scoring the winning goal, dealing with the hardship of an injury, or learning teamwork from sports. Students should keep in mind that the personal essay should relay a story that only they can tell—perhaps a student has a particularly unique story about bringing competitive pickleball to their high school and uniting unlikely friend groups or starting a community initiative to repair and donate golf gear for students who couldn’t otherwise afford to play. However, if their sports-related essay could have been written by any high school point guard or soccer team captain, it’s time to brainstorm new ideas.
Students may feel the need to list their accomplishments and standout qualities in an effort to appear impressive to Ivy League admissions officers. This removes any depth, introspection, and creativity from a student’s essay and flattens their experiences to line items on a resume. Admissions officers already have students’ Activities Lists and resumes; the personal statement should add texture and dimension to their applications, revealing aspects of their character, values and voice not otherwise obvious through the quantitative aspects of their applications. Instead of listing all of their extracurricular involvements, students should identify a particularly meaningful encounter or event they experienced through one of the activities that matters most to them, and reflect on the ways in which their participation impacted their development as a student and person.
The Covid-19 pandemic was a traumatic and formative experience for many students, and it is therefore understandable that applicants draw inspiration from these transformative years as they choose their essay topics. However, while the pandemic affected individuals differently, an essay about the difficulties faced during this time will likely come across as unoriginal and generic. Admissions officers have likely read hundreds of essays about remote learning challenges, social isolation, and the general disruptions caused by Covid-19. These narratives can start to blend together, making it difficult for any single essay to stand out. Instead of centering the essay on the pandemic's challenges, students should consider how they adapted, grew, or made a positive impact during this time. For example, rather than writing about the difficulties of remote learning, a student could describe how they created a virtual study group to support classmates struggling with online classes. Similarly, an applicant might write about developing a new skill such as coding or painting during lockdown and how this pursuit has influenced their academic or career goals. Focusing on resilience, innovation, and personal development can make for a more compelling narrative.
Crafting a standout personal statement requires dedicated time, careful thought, and honest reflection. The most impactful essays are those that toe the lines between vulnerability and professionalism, introspection and action, championing one’s strengths and acknowledging weaknesses. Starting early and striving to avoid overused and unoriginal topics will level up a student’s essay and increase their chances of standing out.
HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- While many are upset that they still don't have power, a southeast Houston family said getting their power back is what sparked a house fire that killed their pet cat.
It happened early Friday morning at the home on Hirondel Street while Crystal Hailey and her three daughters were staying at a friend's house.
"I feel lost. I feel lost and alone, and I just don't know what to do," Hailey, speaking exclusively with Eyewitness News, said.
After Hurricane Beryl knocked a tree onto the power lines that run into her house, she said she called CenterPoint to report it.
"I was concerned with the tree limbs being on the electric line," Hailey said.
Hailey claims CenterPoint representatives told her the tree limbs would be taken care of before power was restored. It never was.
While the cause of the fire is still under investigation, Hailey suspects it could have something to do with the power lines. The fire broke out at the same time she said power was restored to her neighborhood.
"I think it would be preventable if they would have removed the tree limbs," she said.
ABC13 asked for a comment, but CenterPoint said it was investigating the matter.

See how iowa schools have dogs, rabbits and hamsters as classroom pets to teach students empathy, responsibility and how to be wildlife stewards..
As a child, Ann Ott sought solace in Tippy, her family's dog, after she was sexually abused.
As she worked through the trauma, Ott would hug Tippy and cry almost every night.
"She slept with me and licked my tears," she said.
Ott worked hard to overcome the abuse, but never forgot Tippy. In 2018, life took an unexpected and sad turn when she lost her father, father-in-law, and her shih tzu-Lhasa apso mix, Tipper, who was named in honor of Tippy.
The multiple losses left the Iowa high school teacher looking for a purpose.
It was then that Ott, a social studies teacher with the Osage Community School District, decided she wanted to train the family's outdoor hunting dog, Millie, to be a therapy dog and take her to school.
"One of the things that got me through (the abuse) was our dog," Ott said, "and I love that dog so much and what I wouldn't have given to have a dog in (school)."
Though some doubted the yellow Labrador retriever had the right temperament for the work, a fully trained Millie joined Ott at school in January 2021.
Ott is not alone in wanting to bring the healing power of animals into the classroom.
In schools across the country, teachers and administrators have brought dogs, rabbits, frogs, hamsters and the occasional chinchilla to class in the hopes of teaching students about empathy, responsibility and how to be good wildlife stewards.
Experts have long said animals in the classroom can be a calming presence for kids.
Ott saw this firsthand when a middle school student stopped by her classroom to pet 9-year-old Millie. The girl told the long-time teacher she only came to school that day to see the dog.
"I’m so glad you are here," Ott recalls telling the girl as she choked back tears, "she wants to see you, too!"
"That validated everything," she said. "I know (having Millie) has helped at least one student on one day. It has been one of the most rewarding things I’ve done in my nearly 31 years in education."
Things are not always so heavy with Millie, Ott said. The dog had to be taught not to steal students' water bottles. Another time, Millie got away and crashed a girls basketball practice.
"I was just going down to make some copies," Ott said with a laugh, "and before I know it, she's running into the girls basketball practice trying to catch all these balls and they just thought it was so much fun."

Nicole Smith never expected her Riceville Community School District art room to become a shelter for small and exotic animals.
The first animal to take up residence in Smith's classroom was Henry, a hamster who needed to be rehomed.
Henry instantly became a draw for her high school students.
"He used to sit in their pockets while they did art – you know, in their sweatshirt pockets – or they would take a towel and make him a little burrow and he'd sit on the table and shove his cheeks full of food," Smith said.
After Henry died, her students begged for another class pet.
Almost a decade later, Smith's art room has served as a refuge for chinchillas, birds, an iguana and even fire-belly toads – all of which needed a home.
The chinchillas – who were supposedly both female – surprised Smith and her students with a baby chinchilla, called a kit.
At the moment, the art room's inhabitants are Georgia the rabbit, named in honor of Georgia O'Keefe; and two guinea pigs, Bernadette and Hannah.
For all the care Smith and her students give the classroom critters, the animals give back so much more.
"(Students) have so much going on that having the animals, even on the table, allows them to take a breath and refocus, and just calm their minds enough to even create something," Smith said.
Van Meter Community School District's therapy dog Digger is a real Cinderella story.
As a young dog, he flunked out of service dog school, said his owner Danette Cox, a first grade teacher at Van Meter Elementary School. It was Cox's daughter who saw his potential and decided to train Digger to be a therapy dog.
When the English yellow Lab's training was complete, Cox began bringing him to work at Van Meter Community School District. The school even gave Digger his own Van Meter employee badge.
Over the past seven years, Digger has become a companion for nervous first-time students, a comforting presence for children, and the one who picks up stray pencils off of Cox's classroom floor.
"He's used as a reward for kids that have some struggling behaviors," said Cox. "If they've made their goal, then a lot of times they'll come down and get Digger as part of their reward."
Students never know whether they will see Digger walking to class with a child, playing tug-of-war on the playground or napping under a table.
"Everybody knows him," Cox said. "He makes his way around school."
Having pets like Digger in the classroom can teach students a lot about acceptance and unconditional love, she said.
"They're accepted no matter what," Cox said of how animals react to children. "It doesn't matter how you look or what your disability is."
Students and staff are not likely to find a furry animal to cuddle in Greg Barord's Central Campus marine biology classroom.
But people still come to his room to relax and watch the inhabitants of the program's many tanks.
"We'll see (or) hear the door close and different colleagues and teachers come in,” Barord said. “The lab, I think, is for everyone, which is what we want because it provides so much excitement sometimes.”
When he came to Des Moines Public Schools 10 years ago, Barord focused on having students take care of the marine life and did not think much about the serene environment the tanks created in the building.
"As I continued teaching and caring for the animals, (I learned) at the same time you're kind of caring for the students,” he said.
Now he sends students who are having a bad day to clean a tank or simply have them observe the fish.
Despite the calming environment and daily interactions, Barord stresses the classroom's lobsters, octopus, cowfish, stingrays and other sea life are not pets. Students are even asked to refrain from naming any of the thousands of organisms.
Sometimes bonds form by accident.
Recent Ankeny High School graduate Addie Hartmann began spending a lot of time with the class cowfish after she began to study its behavior.
"It's developed facial recognition with me specifically because I used to feed that tank every day," Hartmann said. "And when I come closer you can see signs of excitement" including spitting water.
Her time in Barord's class inspired her to study marine biology in college.
Barord wants people to know there is value to having different types of animals in schools. Animals in the classroom also can help facilitate hard but important discussions about humanely letting them go.
"Depending on the species, it just gives very different talking points of what it means for the animal ... and then we always try to apply it to ocean marine conservation stuff in the wild," Barord said.
It is often Stanley's smiling face greeting Virgil Grissom Elementary School students as they come through the door each morning.
When a child is reluctant to come inside, Stanley's owner, Principal Kyle Harris, offers them the chance to walk the 6-year-old goldendoodle to class.
After morning drop-off, the principal and Stanley visit classrooms in the North Scott Community School District building and sometimes sit in on reading lessons.
"Stanley, he loves being with all the kids," Harris said.
The students love him as well.
Just before the end of the school year, Harris had a second grade student in the office crying because she missed her mother. She calmed down while petting Stanley and talking to Harris.
"Sometimes what he's very helpful with in those situations is taking their mind off something that maybe is bugging them (and) allowing them to kind of open up," he said.
The pooch has even been known to attend the occasional parent-teacher meeting when a calming presence is needed.
"He kind of senses who is in need of a little love," Harris said.
Stanley is not always the best-behaved boy. Once, while touring a classroom at breakfast time, he reached over and stealthily stole a pancake off a student's tray. This and other antics have earned Stanley the nickname "the vacuum cleaner."
Despite four years on the job, he cannot shake the moniker.
"His favorite room to visit (is the preschool) because he always knows when there's crumbs on the floor," Harris said. "So we try to avoid any rooms during snack time but sometimes he'll find something on the floor and clean it up for us."
Lincoln Elementary teacher Connie Ryan’s classroom is not exactly a zoo, but it does have zookeepers who care for Rocky the bearded dragon.
Ryan, who teaches fourth grade language arts and science, has been bringing Rocky to school in Osage for six years. Each week, one of her homeroom students is chosen to be a zookeeper and care for the lizard. This means they handle his feedings, basic terrarium maintenance, and giving him the occasional bath.
“Often students request to stay in at a recess with a friend to complete his care tasks,” Ryan said.
She describes Rocky as a “homebody” who monitors hallway traffic from his enclosure. He does enjoy walking around the classroom and perching on people’s shoulders like a parrot.
When younger students stop by Ryan’s classroom, they are sometimes given the opportunity to hold the bearded dragon and feed him a mealworm.
“His laidback presence has a calming (effect) for these individuals, as they have been taught that lots of noise, sudden movements, and rough handling are not what he prefers,” Ryan said. “We discuss the importance of practicing self-control and having consideration for other’s needs and safety. This kind of empathy is difficult for some kids to have towards peers and adults, but with Rocky they see it as a sense of duty, privilege, and friendship.”
