‘You Go, Girl,’ as Translated Into Hindi

movie review of chak de india

By Andy Webster

  • Aug. 11, 2007

The making-of-a-team sports movie is a timeworn genre, and yet “Chak De! India” (“Go, India!”) finds new variations. Though the game here is field hockey, those fondly recalling the United States soccer team’s first-place finish in the 1991 Women’s World Cup will find a lot to like.

Of course, there are conventions. Kabir Khan (the assured Bollywood veteran Shahrukh Khan) is a former player for India’s national field hockey team who missed a fateful play against Pakistan, costing a championship and making him a pariah. Seven years later, he is hired to coach the nation’s women’s hockey team, giving him one more shot at a title.

The players, from states all over India, are a fractious lot, including a tomboy (Chitrashi Rawat) whose father fears she will never marry; a forward (Sagarika Ghatge) whose boyfriend, a cricket superstar, wants her to quit the team and live in his shadow; a newlywed goalie (Vidya Malavade) whose in-laws expect her to stay at home; and a haughty, seasoned player (Shilpa Shukla) who needles the coach.

When leering boys at a McDonald’s harass them, a girls-against-boys melee erupts, but the coach doesn’t interfere, knowing the team will prevail — and find its spirit. From there, it’s on to the women’s hockey championships in Melbourne, Australia.

The director, Shimit Amin, strikes a buoyant, propulsive tone, replacing the customary Bollywood production numbers with exhilarating musical montages of team practice. For his part, Mr. Khan, to his credit, lets his co-stars’ youthful charisma carry the movie. He also laudably portrays a man who vigorously and unabashedly advocates the advancement of women.

In fact, the film’s greatest merit is its commentary on sexism in India. As it should, “Chak De! India” gives the women, in the closing credits, the last word.

CHAK DE! INDIA

Positive Messages

There's plenty here about overcoming racism and sexism. There's also a poke at the media spin and what impact it can have, here turning a heroic sports figure into a traitor in his country's eyes. The coach says, "it's not strength but spirit that makes a team." Unfortunately he tries to unify and bring out the spirit in his team by letting them beat up some sexist boys in a food court.

Positive Role Models

In trying to mold his team the coach tows a hard line but gets the best out of his players. The girl athletes from states all around India start out divided, calling each other racist names like "Junglees" for the girls from the jungle and "Chow Mein" for girls with more Chinese features. They come along way as a team, especially considering the sexism they're up against. Even the head of the field hockey club barely wants to give them a chance, saying Indian women are better suited to cook and clean.

Violence & Scariness

The girl athletes beat up sexist boys at a food court -- the soundtrack-heavy fight is meant to be comical but boys are ganged up on and hit with sticks and other objects. Girls get some bloody injuries in a few matches and one girl is instructed to rough up an aggressive team with lots of tripping and running them down. The coach raises his hand to one of his players like he's ready to strike her, then doesn't. Objects are burned in protest after a lost game.

Sex, Romance & Nudity

Sexist banter and cat-calls, especially toward the Indian women who look more Chinese; they're asked, "How much for those melons?" One girl athlete makes a clumsy seduction attempt toward her coach that goes nowhere. One player is seen in bed with her boyfriend but they mostly talk onscreen.

A big scene takes place at McDonald's. As the girls progress in the tournament they get a big Puma sponsorship; a ton of Puma boxes arrive and the girls, in awe, dig in.

Chak de India

What's the story.

Seven years after field hockey star Kabir Kahn (Bollywood heartthrob staple Shah Rukh Khan) is deemed a traitor for his big loss against Pakistan he's given another chance to show his true colors. He's asked to coach the India women's national field hockey team. He has three months to mold players from states all around India into a team ready for the world cup in Australia -- and he's got his work cut out for him. The girls are divided by prejudice and haughtiness and lack any kind of camaraderie. And after Kahn works hard to bring the girls together, the team's funding is cut off. The sexist head of the field hockey club is giving the money to the men's team instead. In a last-ditch effort to get the girls to Australia, Coach Kahn has them play against the men's team to decide their fate.

Is It Any Good?

Girls especially will dig into this decent underdog tale and root for the players facing sexism, family expectations, and other obstacles. It'll remind you of A League of Their Own in many ways. Don't worry if you don't know much about field hockey. It's pretty easy to follow (and the training montages are lengthy enough you can probably put together your own neighborhood team by film's end). Despite the cultural divide, guaranteed you'll be cheering "Chak de India!" (meaning "go for it, India") through the exciting conclusion.

It can be hard to get kids to sit through a more typical Bollywood movie. They're very long, usually subtitled, lean toward the melodramatic, and are full of song and dance numbers in a musical style American kids don't hear on the radio. CHAK DE! INDIA is subtitled and a little long, yes, but there are no dance numbers -- the limited soundtrack is more peppy and modern -- and most of the drama takes place on the field.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

Families can talk about their favorite underdog sports movies and how Chak De! India compares.

What do these Indian girls overcome that other athletes don't have to?

In the beginning of the movie how does the media turn Coach Kabir Kahn from someone who lost a game for his country into someone who turned traitor? Do we experience media spin to the same extent in the U.S.?

Milk shake, rattle and roll. Sporty girls are bashing up a bunch of eve-teasers in a fast-food restaurant. The hockey coach doesn’t intervene, whips on his dark glasses and smiles lightly. His girls have scored a hit.

Cheers for Chak De! India , which may be predictable but compels you to root for a team of losers whom only an earth-angel can save from disastrous defeat. Written by Jaideep Saini and directed by Shimit Amin, this inspirational effort echoes Hollywood’s Hardball, The Replacements , and Escape to Victory whose influence has already been evidenced in Lagaan .

But what the hell? If a story is retold with varying riffs, a sliver of imagination and sufficient skill, just chill.

Over to Kabir Khan (Shah Rukh Khan), the disgraced captain of the Indian hockey team, who’s out to redeem himself after seven years of vanvas. He lands the assignment, just by a whisker, of coaching the raggedy Indian women’s hockey team. So far, so hopeful.

The 16 girls from various states are a mess – either too raw or too cocksure. Begins the training which does get far too protracted, what with the girls snarling, whining and ready to tear one’s eyes out. Slowly but surely, Khan makes them understand their strengths and above all, their Indianness which alone can get them to the winning goal.

Obstinately perhaps, the focus remains on Kabir as the coach. There’s no backstory, no glimpses into his heart and mind. Only his mother pops up at the outset and at the end, full stop. In addition, the introduction of the girls – through hideously antiquated wipes – doesn’t make you connect to them, except with the ones who’re either too nice or too much spice. And pray, why linger unduly over the kabhi-bedroom-kabhi-ignore routine of one of the girls with a creepy cricketer?

Chalo Australia, then. Now, you’re hooked as the team takes on the Goliaths, thanks to the coach’s psychological jugglery. The sequences showing Kabir Khan losing his cool, his request to two competitive players to see the larger picture and the finale’s clarion call, are marvellously done, often making your eyes moist. And then, you’re at the edge of the seat for the decisive showdown intricately crafted by sports action director Rob Miller.

Auspiciously, the director fits in strong comments on national unity, gender equality, secularism and team spirit.

Shah Rukh Khan is outstanding – it’s a performance that is comparable and at points even more internalised than the one in Swades . He carries the proverbial burden of the project on his shoulders. Intense and steel-like, he stays in character throughout, shunning any traces of glamour.

Of the girls, the little stick of dynamite Chitrashi Rawat, the independent-minded Sagarika Ghatge, the team’s zip-unzip vamp Shilpa Shukla and the anger-spewing Tania Abrol are marvellous discoveries.

Yup, so go for it!

Chak De, India is by far the most authentic, meticulously researched sports movie India has made.

This is exceptionally well written (Jaideep Sahni take a bow), well acted and put together.

The plot contains no surprises, but the matches are deftly shot and the film is a buoyant expression of girl power.

India is definitely Bollywood, ashamed of neither sentimentality nor predictability. Yet its sharp-eyed view of Indian society makes for a world of difference from old-style, sugar-coated Bollywood films.

Chak De! India

Chak De! India

  • Kabir Khan, the coach of the Indian Women's National Hockey Team, dreams of making his all-girls team emerge victorious against all odds.
  • Kabir Khan (Shahrukh Khan) knows what it's like to come back from the dead. The ex Indian Captain has now come back in the avatar of the Coach of the Indian Women's National Hockey team. A team that exists more on paper and less in reality. The team is a rag-tag bunch of girls with their own agenda. A bunch of girls who have forgotten what it is like to play for the love of the game. Of playing because you want glory for your country. Not because you want a pensioned job or a government flat. They have all forgotten the sharp thrill of just holding the hockey stick, keeping their eyes on the ball and playing for all they are worth. They have played every game but hockey to make sure they get selected every year in the Indian National team. But what does it really mean to play for the Indian National team? To play for India? The girls have never known the thrilling energy of being Team India. Of giving their all to see their country's name on a trophy. But Kabir Khan, once a captain, now forgotten, does. He knows what it takes to get there. And what it means to return empty handed. This time, he wants to make sure that it's different. He knows there are no second chances. Despite his past, he believes that if only the girls played as one, anything would be possible. Because Kabir Khan believes that it is not that we can't win. It's just that we have never believed we can. CHAK DE INDIA is the story of a coach's fight of making his team, Team India by overcoming their diverse backgrounds, by learning to use everything that life hurls on them as a secret weapon. It's a story about honesty, sincerity and integrity. The Film became a cult classic and won its leading man the National Award and put the Indian National Sport "Hockey", back on the map. — Official Source

  • Chak De! India opens in Delhi during the final minutes of a (fictional) Hockey World Cup match between Pakistan and India, with Pakistan leading, 1-0. When the Indian team captain, Kabir Khan (Shah Rukh Khan) is fouled, he elects to take the penalty stroke himself. His strike, however, flies just above the goal and India suffers a crushing defeat. Soon after the match ends, the media begins to circulate a photograph of Khan accepting a handshake from the captain of the Pakistan team. This action leads to a nation-wide smear campaign which alleged that Khan (who is a Muslim) might have "thrown" the game in an act of sympathy towards Pakistan. The religious prejudice exhibited towards Khan by the entire society at large forces him and his mother (Joyoshree Arora) out of their ancestral home and into exile. Seven years later, Mr. Tripathi (Anjan Srivastav), the head of India's Hockey association, meets with Khan's friend and hockey advocate Uttamaji (Mohit Chauhan), to discuss the Indian women's hockey team. Tripathi argues the team has no future since, the only long term role for women is to "cook and clean." Uttamaji, however, informs him that Kabir Khan (whom no one has seen for seven years) wants to coach the team. Though initially skeptical, Tripathi ultimately agrees to this arrangement. Khan thus finds himself in charge of a group of 16 young women from various sections of India, who are divided by their own competitive natures and individual prejudices. While Komal Chautala (Chitrashi Rawat) from Haryana, conflicts with Preeti Sabarwal (Sagarika Ghatge) from Chandigarh, Balbir Kaur (Tanya Abrol) from Punjab has an extremely short temper and bullies Rani Dispotta (Seema Azmi) and Soimoi Kerketa (Nisha Nair), belonging to the remote villages in Jharkhand. Mary Ralte (Kimi Laldawla) from Mizoram and Molly Zimik (Masochon "Chon Chon" Zimik) from Manipur (in North-East India) are both treated as "foreigners" by virtually everyone they meet and face repeated sexual harassment. The team's captain, Vidya Sharma (Vidya Malvade), is forced to choose between hockey and the wishes of her husband Rakesh's (Nakul Vaid) family, while Preeti's fiance, Abhimanyu Singh (Vivan Bhatena), the (fictional) vice captain of the India national cricket team, is deeply threatened by her involvement with the team. Khan realizes that he can only unite the girls if they develop the discipline to work as a team. This leads him to have his assistant Krishnaji (Vibha Chhibber) bench a number of players during the first few days, including the most experienced player, Bindia Naik (Shilpa Shukla). In response, Bindia engineers a revolt which leads Khan to resign. As a gesture of good will, Khan, however, invites Krishnaji, the team manager Sukhlal (Javed Khan), and the girls to a farewell lunch. During the lunch, a few boys start teasing Mary, leading to a large brawl between the girls and the boys. The quarrel, however, unites the girls and destroys their anger towards Khan. They request him to remain as their coach. Khan, impressed by the display of their team spirit, eventually agrees and further trains them on various aspects. Their newly found unity is, however, challenged by Tripathi who suddenly decides that the women's team will not go to Australia for "The World Championship." Khan, however, forces him to agree to a challenge match with the men's team on condition that if the girls win, they will be allowed to go to Australia. The girls eventually lose the match, but their courageous performance is well praised by the men's team and forces Tripathi to change his mind and send them to Australia. During "The World Cup", the girls compete against teams such as the Hockeyroos (Australia), the Black Sticks Women (New Zealand), the Las Leonas (Argentina), and the South Korean team among others. While still working to overcome their differences, the girls eventually learn to act as a single unit, leading them to win the Championship. In doing so, they not only destroyed the prejudices which once separated them, but also proved to their families and country the merits of women's hockey. Khan, restoring his reputation and proving his mettle, returns his ancestral home with his mother, welcomed by the once angry neighbors.

Bollywood actress Vidya Malavade is best known for her work in the Shah Rukh Khan hit Chak De! India . Over the years, the actress has been seen in various roles, across formats. In a recent interview with Bollywood Bubble , the actress opened up about her career, including the rejections she has faced along the way. Vidya Malavade shared that she had lost opportunities on grounds of being “too young, too old, too pretty, not-so-pretty, too glamorous, not glamorous”. She also spoke about a “weird” role she was offered – to play actor Sidharth Malhotra's mother. Vidya, 51, is only 12 years older than the Shershaah actor. Recounting the experience, Vidya said, “I remember I got this call for… This is really weird… Some casting people who were casting for Sidharth Malhotra's mother in some… I am not going to say where but in something and they called me and I was just… Really? Do you have no clue about what you must do? Some casting person, she was probably a new assistant or whatever. But I am like, ‘How? What is it? How is the brain working?'”

In the same interview, Vidya Malavade also revealed that Imtiaz Ali once almost rejected her for being “too glamorous”. Referring to her role as Vaishali in Dr Arora , Vidya said, “When Imtiaz's casting team – when they were casting, he kept saying, ‘No she can't do it. She's too glamorous for this part.' He wanted somebody to look like a housewife from the heartland of the country. He was like, ‘How will she carry it off? I don't think she will.'”

Explaining how she convinced the filmmaker to not “take the part away from” her because of her looks, Vidya Malavade added: “I remember Mukesh Chabbra's team was casting and he's like do you have any photos like the character they want so I can show it to the team and show. And I sent pictures. He was like, ‘Not these, I want something more.' I was at a shoot. I packed up early, called my house help and told her I needed a saree and blouse of hers. I wore that saree, wore some kajal and styled my hair. I made her only take pictures. I sent the picture and a message to Imtiaz Ali sir telling him, ‘Sir, please don't take a part away from me because of the way I look. Because I know I can transform and do what it takes to be Vaishali. And he said just give me a few days. A couple of days later I got a call saying that you're on. For me, that was a transformation.”

  • Vidya Malavade said that the girls' team in 'Chak De India' would call SRK 'papa' behind his back
  • Malavade said that she admired SRK's generosity, guidance, and high energy levels during shoot
  • Malavade will be next seen in Aayush Sharma’s ‘Ruslaan’

Vidya Malavade, who played Vidya Sharma in the 2007 film 'Chak De India', exclusively told IndiaToday.in that the girls' team would call Shah Rukh Khan 'papa' (father) behind his back. The actor also spoke about the qualities she wishes to imbibe from the superstar.

Vidya Malavade played a pivotal role in 'Chak De India' . Ahead of her upcoming film, 'Ruslaan' release, the actor reminisced her days on sets with SRK. She also told us that SRK would be called 'papa' by the girls' team.

Vidya recounted her experience of meeting Shah Rukh Khan during her ‘Chak De India’ days. Describing him as remarkably warm and charming, she said, "SRK is always very warm and welcoming. At the time when we were shooting ‘Chak De India’, he was always very nice. Most of the girls were rather new, young, and had no idea about the camera setup, and he would always be there. One thing that one takes away from him is his generosity, as an actor as well in front of the camera. It's not just about him, it's about everyone around him as well. He believes that a film is never about one person, it has to be about the team."

She continued, "He would always guide us during the shoot, he always did that with all of us which is why we used to call him 'Papa' behind his back. It was a girls’ thing because he was playing our coach and in general, you have so much respect for a coach, he was like a father figure, and also he was very sweet. We would know that he is on the set, we would follow his perfume, and we would be like 'Okay Papa is coming on set'. He always smelt so fresh and nice."

Further praising SRK, Vidya said, "His energy level is so high, he doesn't stop. On our day off, he took us girls out one evening. We watched his film, ‘Don’, then partied at a club. Post that, we partied again in our hotel. It was six in the morning and he still had the energy. He wanted to go for breakfast post the party and I was like what about sleep? Being around him is very uplifting. He just brings everybody up with the amount of energy that he has and he exudes. We can learn and take so much from him. Also, he has a great presence of mind, he is razor-sharp. That's what I would like to imbibe from him."

Vidya Malavade will be next seen in Aayush Sharma’s ‘Ruslaan’. The film will release on April 26. Published By: Anindita Mukhopadhyay Published On: Apr 24, 2024 ALSO READ | Revisiting 'Chak De India': When SRK waved the flag of women empowerment high
