Essay on Tiger: The tiger is our national animal, locally known as ‘Baagh’ and its scientific name is ‘Panthera Tigris’ . This predator is listed among the most amazing creatures on the planet and is the largest member of the cat family. Tigers are strong, powerful, and beautiful creatures only found in specific locations. Unfortunately, tigers are on the brink of extinction because of things like illegal hunting poaching, and habitat loss. According to the 2022 census, there are 3167 tigers in India , which is a significant improvement in their population. The government has taken various measures to save this beautiful animal from extinction.

In India, there are a total of 54 Tiger Reserves. Tigers are one of the few animals that play a crucial role in maintaining the balance in our biodiversity . Tigers are known as the largest member of the Cat Family, where a Male Tiger weighs about 100 – 260 kg and a Female Tiger weighs about 75 – 177 kg.

Tigers are the most beautiful animals on the planet. They are found in the dense forest because of their characteristic feature to stay aloof from human contact. In India, they are found in the jungles of Sundarbans, West Bengal, Assam and Central India. They belong to the cat family and often referred to as big cats. Tigers are known to be a territorial and solitary animal who stands as the apex predator.

Habitat and Physical Features

Tiger possesses a muscular body with strong forelimbs. Its pelage is massive, and colouration varies from brown to orange with black stripes. The strips are unique for every tiger and help in camouflage in vegetation, especially in the long grass. Their hair growth is thick around the neck and jaws with long whiskers, especially in males. The skull of the tiger is like the lion’s skull.

Having blessed with padded feet and sharp claws, they display unique hunting skills which let them have a stronghold on their prey. Tigers are nocturnal as they sleep in the day and hunt in the night. Its eye glow like a fire in the dark night and their vision is six times stronger than humans during night. It is a carnivorous animal and become very fond of blood and flesh. Sometimes, it comes to the villages from the dense forests in the search of food and eat any animal even people. It makes a solid grip on its preys (such as deer, zebra and other animals) very suddenly through its strong jaws and sharp claws. Generally, it sleeps during day time and hunts during night time because of easiness in grabbing preys. Killing wild animals without the need of food is its nature and hobby which shows its strongness and being powerful in the forest in front of other animals. That’s why, it is known as very cruel and violent wild animal.

In India, tigers are commonly found in Sundarbans (Assam, West Bengal, Tripura, Central India, etc). More big sized tigers are found in the African jungles however Royal Bengal Tigers look most beautiful of all. Tiger killing has been prohibited all through the country from the time when the number of tigers was decreasing very fast. There are six living subspecies of tigers found (such as Bengal tiger, Siberian tiger, Sumatran tiger, Malayan tiger, Indo-Chinese tiger, and South-Chinese tiger) and three have been recently extinct (such as Javan tiger, Caspian tiger, and Bali tiger).

Tiger is a very violent wild animal. It has been declared by the Indian government as the national animal of India. It is considered as the strongest, powerful and most beautiful animal on this planet. Tigers are also found in other countries like Bangladesh, Cambodia, Thailand, Laos, China, Indonesia, Myanmar, Nepal, Malaysia, Russia, Vietnam, Bhutan, etc.

Tiger is a carnivorous animal which hunts in the night however sleeps for day. Tiger has a strong and powerful body using which it can jump up to the high length (almost 7 ft) and run up for long distance (almost 85 km/h). Black stripes on their blue, white or orange body make them really attractive and beautiful. It has naturally strong jaws, teeth and sharp claws in order to grasp its prey from long distance. It is considered as its long tail helps to maintain balance while hunting the prey. A tiger can be around 13 feet in length and 150 kg in weight. Tigers can be recognized by their unique pattern of stripes on the upper body.

Tiger as a National Animal

Tiger was selected as the National animal of India by the government because of its power, strength, and agility. It was selected as so also because of its nice names such as king of Jungle and Royal Bengal Tiger.

What is Project Tiger

Project Tiger is a campaign run by the government of India in order to maintain the population of tiger in country. It was established in 1973 in order to save tigers from the extreme threat of extinction. This project was made to focus on the preservation of remaining tigers all over the country as well as increase their number through the breeding of species. Around 23 tiger reserves have been made throughout the country for providing the safety and natural environment to them. It was seen a marked improvement in the tiger population by 1993 in the country. However despite the increase in population, the population of tigers in the country is still not satisfactory compared to the effort and money put in the project.

The dilemma of a difficult and dramatic moral choice has long been known to captivate the human mind, and writers know this well. The short story The Lady or the Tiger? By Frank R. Stockton is a perfect example of an almost quintessential dilemma on the most thrilling of choices: the one which involves love and death. The story is set in an unspecified land ruled by a semi-barbaric king and describes a peculiar legal procedure invented by him based on his own understanding of justice: an arena where the convicts are tried. Instead of the trial by battle, the accused are offered to choose one of two doors: behind one, a fierce tiger awaits to kill the unfortunate human, and behind the other – salvation in the form of a lady who would become his wife.

However, once the lover of the king’s daughter is given the dreadful choice, the princess secretly interferes with the chance and gives the man a hint to open the door on the right. And while it is tempting and comforting to consider the possibility of her sparing his life instead of directing him to his death, upon closer inspection there is little doubt that she has guided him to the tiger.

It is tempting to imagine that she wanted to save him. But this version is mostly driven by the reader’s humanity. The text, on the other hand, offers little backing to the happy ending. We know that the princess loves the man dearly. We also witness her hesitation at the end of the story. She hesitates to imagine the “cruel fangs of the tiger” (4).

However, these are not her thoughts. Instead, they are speculations by the author. And this short part is the only proof of her compassion. She is passionate, there is no doubt about it. But her passion is burning, not heart-warming. She is determined, but mostly for her own sake, not for him.

On the other hand, her barbaric nature is prominent throughout the story. She is resolute about making things go her way. For instance, she obtains the secret of the doors with “gold, and the power of a woman’s will” (3). A whole paragraph is devoted to her anguish and jealousy triggered by other girl’s mere glances at her man. She thinks he even returns them. However, she acknowledges that all this may exist only in her imagination.

Besides, she did not come to the trial to support the man – she was “terribly interested” (3). There is even a phrase “She had lost him, but who should have him?” (4). It clearly shows that for her there is no happy ending. She does not show any respect for his life. In her eyes, the choice is between redemption and a tantalizing “justice”. The latter will become the salvation to him and the torture to her.

The princess is truly the daughter of a barbaric king. She displays all the features that suggest power, determination, calculation, and passion. It is humanity and compassion that she is lacking, at least on the pages of the story. But power and courage are not enough to overcome the desire for vengeance if the heart lacks warmth. If by any chance it was the lady whom the man found behind the right door, it could be only by chance or a momentary burst of passion. If on the other hand, the princess acted upon a long-thought-out decision (and we are told by the author that she did), there is little doubt which decision it was: the tiger.

Tiger Lily Hutchence special bond with parents’ best friend

Tiger Lily Hutchence has made an emotional pilgrimage back to the UK where her extraordinary life – and its tragic start – first began.

After a long stint living in her father’s native Perth, the 25-year-old daughter of the late Michael Hutchence and Paula Yates has returned home, where she’s surrounded by the memories of her parents through the company she keeps.

New Idea has exclusively learnt Tiger  is spending “lots of quality time” with Paula’s best friend, esteemed British writer and activist Catherine Mayer. Despite the 35-year age difference between them, they are bonded through their unimaginable shared grief.

While Tiger was raised by her adopted father and Paula’s former partner, Sir Bob Geldof, Catherine, 60, made sure to keep tabs on her after her parents died.

“As Tiger got older, they became friends. Tiger spent many happy times with Catherine and her husband, Andy [Gill], in the UK over the years. They never tried to replace her parents, who they loved dearly.

“They just wanted to make sure Tiger knew she wasn’t alone in grieving them.”

Shared grief

In February 2020, tragedy struck again when Andy – the guitarist for Gang of Four and Michael’s songwriting partner during his short solo career outside of INXS – passed away suddenly from a respiratory illness at the age of 64. Catherine has spoken out about suspecting he was one of the early victims of COVID-19, before the world realised how deadly it was going to be.

“Tiger was devastated for Catherine. She loved Andy, and she has heard through tales passed down just how much her dad loved Andy, too. The four of them were thick as thieves and Tiger always felt her parents were close by when she was with them,” says a source.

Catherine rarely speaks about the loss of Michael, who died by suicide in 1997, and Paula, who passed three years later from a heroin overdose. But on the 20th anniversary of his death, Catherine, writing a personal essay for The Guardian , said: “Michael [was] the first close friend of my age to [die]. Grief doesn’t always manifest in tears and pain.

“For months afterwards, numb and fizzing with a demented energy, I walked into walls and tripped over paving stones. The bruises multiplied as if my body was trying to tell me, ‘This hurts; this really hurts.’”

Catherine’s three-year friendship with Michael blossomed after he called Andy to ask if he would play guitar on his new record. Andy, who is also credited with co-writingand producing, moved with Michael to a house in France to begin their recording process.

Catherine would visit with Paula on weekends, where she observed: “Michael did adore her and she him, although both doubted they were worthy of the other.”

Michael died before he finished the self-titled album, leaving his grief-stricken friend Andy to complete it– and ensure it was dedicated to Tiger, his only child.

In the following years, Catherine sadly watched Paula’s second daughter, Peaches Geldof, suffer from relentless British media attention before succumbing to a heroin overdose, aged 25, in 2014. Sources say she swore to protect Tiger, who features heavily in Catherine’s life.

Making new memories

Last year, Catherine took a trip with Tiger and her fiancé, Aussie musician Nick Allbrook, to Hastings. Sources say they spent “lovely, cosy time with Catherine’s eclectic group of friends, listening to music and admiring each other’s art”.

Catherine has also spoken on her Instagram of listening to one of aspiring singer Tiger’s songs, ‘Teena’.

“Catherine thinks the world of Tiger and is so proud of the woman she’s become,” says a source. “She has no doubt her parents would be, too.

“Tiger admires Catherine’s incredible work as a writer and women’s rights activist. They are kindred spirits through shared losses, experience and creativity.”
