Essay On Football

Football is played by 11 players on both sides in order to put the ball into the opposing goal. To play the game, players can use any part of their body except their arms or hands. Only the goalkeeper is permitted to use his hands to touch the ball. The goalkeeper is the last line of defence, and his sole responsibility is to prevent the ball from entering the net.

The team is made up of three parts: attack, midfield, and defence. The game is a test of stamina, skill, and, most importantly, teamwork. The goal is to score as many goals as possible within the duration of 90 minutes. The team with the maximum number of goals at the end of regulation time wins.

Football's first rules and regulations were written down in England in the late 1800s. The game has evolved since then. To keep up with the game, the playing style became much more complex, and more rules were added. Football is now one of the most-watched sports on the planet. The modern game of football is made up of attackers, who lead the entire team, and midfielders, who form the team's core and serve as the link between the forwards and defenders. Defenders defend against opposition attacks and protect the goal. Different formations, strategies, tactics, and techniques emerged over time, making the game more fun and interesting.

It is the coach's or the manager's responsibility to manage the entire squad. The coach may make three substitutions during a 90-minute game divided into two halves. A total of four referees oversee the entire event, including one referee, two linesmen, and a fourth official. It is the responsibility of the referees to ensure that the game runs smoothly, and the referee's decision is the final word in any case. Football is popular all over the world because of the zeal with which its players play the game. It is not an easy task to play football for a total of 90 minutes. It takes a lot of stamina as well as world-class ball control and mastery.

Popular Teams | Real Madrid, Manchester United, Barcelona, Juventus, Bayern Munich, Liverpool, AC Milan, and many other clubs are among the best in the world. Ronaldo grew up in a low-income family. He went on to become the club's first player to play for the under-16, under-17, and under-18 teams, and first teams, all in the same season. It takes a lot of stamina as well as world-class ball control and mastery. A good game sense is also required to perform well on the pitch.

Football requires a high level of physical fitness. The players must run and stay active until the end of the game. They must chase the ball and intercept opposing players at all times; they must defend their goals at all times. Head balls, chest passes, rabonas, and scissor kicks are all artistic techniques. To play the game, players can use any part of their body except their arms or hands. Only the goalkeeper is permitted to use his hands to touch the ball. The goalkeeper is the last line of defence, and his sole responsibility is to prevent the ball from entering the net. Professional football requires a great deal of dedication and discipline. An Introduction

Football is a game that requires strength, loads of fitness and cleverness to be played. It is a game of 90 minutes. There are two teams. Each team can have a maximum of 11 players and a minimum of 7 players. There are two goalposts. The goalkeepers from each of the teams prevent the ball from entering the goal area. The other players try to zigzag their way ahead by kicking the ball. They try to pass the opponents to score a goal. It is a highly intense game with excitement, emotion, blood, and sweat.

The History of Football

In the ancient days, football was not made of leather. In some places, people blew up pigs’ bladders to make footballs. In the Mesoamerican culture, football was played with a rock. It denoted the Sun God. The unfortunate thing was, the losing team’s captain was sacrificed to God. This element of violence and barbarism in football continued even when the early signs of modern football started emerging in England.

As the world moved in the 19th century, this game got separated into two forms. In one form, there was the provision to carry the ball with hands and in the other, handling the ball was forbidden except for the goalkeeper. During this time, the rules of the game were set and the violence associated with it was largely reduced.

Why Do So Many People Love Playing Football?

Football, unlike cricket, has no moment of dullness. There is excitement till the last second of the 90-minute game. The joy of passing the ball from the jungle of opponents, and the joy of smashing the ball to the goal is priceless. As the player is moving forward with the ball, there is always that danger of getting the ball snatched away by the opponent. Then there are expert players like Messi or Beckham who magically make the ball take a curve-turn all the while in the air.

There are also heated exchanges among the players. The players take the competition very seriously. No football fan can ever forget the head-butt of Zidane or the attitude of Ronaldo. At the same time, one can also never forget the moment of the Croatian President hugging the players of the country who sadly lost the World Cup Final in 2018. The emotions run high.

Football in India

India is known for cricket. As a result, football gets less attention here. The Bengalis are the forerunners in the football world in India. The All India Football Federation is doing all it can to promote football in the country. Apart from the traditional Santosh Trophy, in India, there are two football leagues - I-League and the Super League.

Gradually, football is gaining traction in India. In fact, India is gradually getting recognized in the international football world. The 2017 U-17 Football World cup was held in India. This is the first time that a major FIFA event took place in the country. There are many football players like Sunil Chhetri, Gurpreet Singh Sandhu, Anirudh Thapa, and more who are relevant in the psyche of the Indians.

Football is a game where people have to give their hundred percent. There is no pretension. It is not just a game of tactics and strength, but also a game of emotions.

Short Essay On Football

Football is one of the most renowned games in India. It is a widely played game in the world and it consists of a team of around 11 people. It is played both nationally and internationally. The word football has arrived from two words: foot and ball, where the players run and kick the ball with their feet towards the net on either side. It is a fun game that is very amazing to watch and also to play.

It is also known as soccer in South Africa, Australia, and North America. A very popular football tournament which is played internationally is the FIFA world cup, which is played once every 4 years. Various countries participate in this tournament.

Football is not only a physical game but also a great mental exercise which not only relieves a lot of stress but also helps improve a lot of skills like concentration, aim, tolerance and also football develops a sense of team spirit. All in all, it is a great game that enhances your skills and also refreshes your mind.

At first, it was only played in England but now it is played worldwide. It is an outdoor game and is played on big open rectangular grounds. Also, football players are the most highly paid sportsmen. Because of the excitement and thrill included in a football game, it is a famous and worldwide played game.

Lastly , playing football needs serious body fitness. The players have to run and remain active until the last moment of the game. They have to chase the ball and the opponent players to intercept; they have to protect their goals each and every second. The head-balls, the chest-pass, the rabona, the scissor kick - all these techniques are works of art!

FC Barcelona: Achievements and Impact Essay

Introduction.

Barcelona football club was undeniably the best soccer team in the last ten years. The professional football club based in Barcelona, a city in northeastern Spain on the Mediterranean has won numerous domestic, continental, and global titles in the last decade. The club has won 21 titles since the year 2004 (King, 2010). This success has propelled the club to the second position among the world’s richest soccer teams based on revenue and market value. The football club has also managed to increase its fan base in the last ten years, especially on major social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter, and Google Plus. Barcelona boasts of a highly talented and dynamic team of young players drawn from various parts of the world. However, Spanish players such as Xavi Hernandez, Andres Iniesta, Cesc Fabregas, and Victor Valdes among others dominate the team (Hunter, 2013).

The team also boasts of Lionel Messi who is arguably the best player of the current generation of footballers in the world. Most players who have represented the Barcelona football club in the last decade have managed to receive individual accolades for their efforts with the club and their national soccer teams (King, 2010).

Success and achievements in the last decade

Barcelona is one of the most successful teams in the world in terms of overall achievements since its inception. From the year 2004, the club has won a number of domestic and continental titles, as well as global titles. The domestic honors won by the team in the last decade include six Spanish football league titles, six Spanish Super Cup titles, and two Copa Del Rey titles (Hunter, 2013). Continental honors include three European Champions League titles and the two European Super Cup titles. Barcelona also achieved global success when they won the FIFA Club World Cup in 2009 and 2011. The club has emerged as runners up in most of these competitions several times during the last decade. In the last ten years, Barcelona has had three managers who helped to put it on the global map following the team’s impressive results (King, 2010).

The most successful of the three managers was Pep Guardiolas, who made history for winning numerous titles within a short time. The coach is also hailed for successfully tutoring Lionel Messi, who has dominated football awards all over the world (Hunter, 2013). Pep Guardiolas helped Barcelona to win 14 titles in the period he was the club manager between 2008- 2012. He is famous for the manner in which he developed a successful team around Lionel Messi, Andres Iniesta, and Xavi Hernadez after selling top players at the club such as Deco and Ronaldinho (Hunter, 2013). Under his guidance, Barcelona made history in 2009 for becoming the first team from Spain to win three major titles in one football season (King, 2010). The team also made history in 2009 when they won all the six competitions they participated in during the year. The football club almost repeated the same performance of 2009 in the year 2011when it won five out of six competitions.

Barcelona made great strides during the reign of Pep Guardiolas as the manager. In the year 2010, Barcelona made a mark in the history of world football when three of its academy products emerged as the top three players in the world. Messi, Xavi and Iniesta were shortlisted for the award of the prestigious FIFA Ballon d’OR in 2010 (King, 2010). Most football experts argue that Barcelona’s team of the last one decade easily qualifies as the greatest squad of the current generation of footballers.

Barcelona is among the three teams that have remained in top-flight football in Spain alongside Real Madrid and Athletic Bilbao. The central player for this team in the last decade has been Loniel Messi, who has won the FIFA Ballon d’OR for a record four consecutive years from 2009- 2012 (Hunter, 2013). Apart from Messi, Barcelona has also been represented by a number of football stars such as Ronaldinho, who won the FIFA Balon d’OR in 2005, Deco, Carols Puyol, Samuel Eto’o, Cesc Fabregas, Victor Valdes, and Gerald Pique among others (King, 2010).

Effect of Barcelona players on Spanish team and the 2010 world cup

The FIFA world cup is one of the most-watched sports competitions in the world. Spain is the reigning world champion after they defeated the Netherlands in the final of the last edition held in South Africa in 2010 (Hunter, 2013). There is a lot of influence from the Barcelona football club on the Spanish national team. This team has the highest number of representatives in the national team. The Spanish football team applies the philosophy of short passes in the field, just like Barcelona. The presence of Barcelona players in the national team has popularized this philosophy on the global arena, as many people now consider it their style of play (King, 2010).

Barcelona boosts of not less than ten players every time the team gathers for national duty. During the 2010 FIFA world cup in South Africa, eight players in the Spanish national team came from Barcelona. The top scorer at the tournament was David Villa, who had signed for Barcelona from Valencia before the competition began.

Important members of Barcelona also scored crucial goals for Spain during the tournament that they eventually won. The most notable contribution of a Barcelona player happened during the finals when Andres Iniesta scored the winning goal in extra time to give Spain their maiden world title (Hunter, 2013). Famous Barcelona players who played in the world cup in South Africa and are still playing in the team include Victor Valdes, Gerald Pique, Carlos Puyol, Andres Iniesta, Xavi Hernadez, Sergio Busquests, and Pedro Rodriquez. Two years later, Barcelona players again made a mark in the Spanish national team when they helped their country to defend the European title that they had won in 2008 (Hunter, 2013). Spain will look forward to defending their world title this year when the tournament moves to Brazil in the summer.

Barcelona has undeniably been the best soccer team in the last ten years. The achievements of the team since 2004 have made it a force to reckon with in the history of club football, as they have managed to equal and even surpass records held by other great teams such as Real Madrid, AC Milan, Manchester United, and Bayern Munich among others. Barcelona is expected to produce the highest number of representatives in the Spanish national team during this year’s world cup in Brazil. Some of the players that will be hopping to represent their country in the world cup for the first time include Morata, Christian Tello, and Jodi Alba. Many football clubs will struggle to achieve what Barcelona has managed in the last ten years within a similar or even shorter timeline.

How to Conclude an Essay | Interactive Example

Published on January 24, 2019 by Shona McCombes . Revised on July 23, 2023.

The conclusion is the final paragraph of your essay . A strong conclusion aims to:

  • Tie together the essay’s main points
  • Show why your argument matters
  • Leave the reader with a strong impression

Your conclusion should give a sense of closure and completion to your argument, but also show what new questions or possibilities it has opened up.

This conclusion is taken from our annotated essay example , which discusses the history of the Braille system. Hover over each part to see why it’s effective.

Braille paved the way for dramatic cultural changes in the way blind people were treated and the opportunities available to them. Louis Braille’s innovation was to reimagine existing reading systems from a blind perspective, and the success of this invention required sighted teachers to adapt to their students’ reality instead of the other way around. In this sense, Braille helped drive broader social changes in the status of blindness. New accessibility tools provide practical advantages to those who need them, but they can also change the perspectives and attitudes of those who do not.

Step 1: return to your thesis, step 2: review your main points, step 3: show why it matters, what shouldn’t go in the conclusion, more examples of essay conclusions, other interesting articles, frequently asked questions about writing an essay conclusion.

To begin your conclusion, signal that the essay is coming to an end by returning to your overall argument.

Don’t just repeat your thesis statement —instead, try to rephrase your argument in a way that shows how it has been developed since the introduction.

Prevent plagiarism. Run a free check.

Next, remind the reader of the main points that you used to support your argument.

Avoid simply summarizing each paragraph or repeating each point in order; try to bring your points together in a way that makes the connections between them clear. The conclusion is your final chance to show how all the paragraphs of your essay add up to a coherent whole.

To wrap up your conclusion, zoom out to a broader view of the topic and consider the implications of your argument. For example:

  • Does it contribute a new understanding of your topic?
  • Does it raise new questions for future study?
  • Does it lead to practical suggestions or predictions?
  • Can it be applied to different contexts?
  • Can it be connected to a broader debate or theme?

Whatever your essay is about, the conclusion should aim to emphasize the significance of your argument, whether that’s within your academic subject or in the wider world.

Try to end with a strong, decisive sentence, leaving the reader with a lingering sense of interest in your topic.

The easiest way to improve your conclusion is to eliminate these common mistakes.

Don’t include new evidence

Any evidence or analysis that is essential to supporting your thesis statement should appear in the main body of the essay.

The conclusion might include minor pieces of new information—for example, a sentence or two discussing broader implications, or a quotation that nicely summarizes your central point. But it shouldn’t introduce any major new sources or ideas that need further explanation to understand.

Don’t use “concluding phrases”

Avoid using obvious stock phrases to tell the reader what you’re doing:

  • “In conclusion…”
  • “To sum up…”

These phrases aren’t forbidden, but they can make your writing sound weak. By returning to your main argument, it will quickly become clear that you are concluding the essay—you shouldn’t have to spell it out.

Don’t undermine your argument

Avoid using apologetic phrases that sound uncertain or confused:

  • “This is just one approach among many.”

This conclusion is taken from an argumentative essay about the internet’s impact on education. It acknowledges the opposing arguments while taking a clear, decisive position.

The internet has had a major positive impact on the world of education; occasional pitfalls aside, its value is evident in numerous applications. The future of teaching lies in the possibilities the internet opens up for communication, research, and interactivity. As the popularity of distance learning shows, students value the flexibility and accessibility offered by digital education, and educators should fully embrace these advantages. The internet’s dangers, real and imaginary, have been documented exhaustively by skeptics, but the internet is here to stay; it is time to focus seriously on its potential for good.

This conclusion is taken from a short expository essay that explains the invention of the printing press and its effects on European society. It focuses on giving a clear, concise overview of what was covered in the essay.

The invention of the printing press was important not only in terms of its immediate cultural and economic effects, but also in terms of its major impact on politics and religion across Europe. In the century following the invention of the printing press, the relatively stationary intellectual atmosphere of the Middle Ages gave way to the social upheavals of the Reformation and the Renaissance. A single technological innovation had contributed to the total reshaping of the continent.

This conclusion is taken from a literary analysis essay about Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein . It summarizes what the essay’s analysis achieved and emphasizes its originality.

By tracing the depiction of Frankenstein through the novel’s three volumes, I have demonstrated how the narrative structure shifts our perception of the character. While the Frankenstein of the first volume is depicted as having innocent intentions, the second and third volumes—first in the creature’s accusatory voice, and then in his own voice—increasingly undermine him, causing him to appear alternately ridiculous and vindictive. Far from the one-dimensional villain he is often taken to be, the character of Frankenstein is compelling because of the dynamic narrative frame in which he is placed. In this frame, Frankenstein’s narrative self-presentation responds to the images of him we see from others’ perspectives. This conclusion sheds new light on the novel, foregrounding Shelley’s unique layering of narrative perspectives and its importance for the depiction of character.

Your essay’s conclusion should contain:

  • A rephrased version of your overall thesis
  • A brief review of the key points you made in the main body
  • An indication of why your argument matters

The conclusion may also reflect on the broader implications of your argument, showing how your ideas could applied to other contexts or debates.

For a stronger conclusion paragraph, avoid including:

  • Important evidence or analysis that wasn’t mentioned in the main body
  • Generic concluding phrases (e.g. “In conclusion…”)
  • Weak statements that undermine your argument (e.g. “There are good points on both sides of this issue.”)

Your conclusion should leave the reader with a strong, decisive impression of your work.

The conclusion paragraph of an essay is usually shorter than the introduction . As a rule, it shouldn’t take up more than 10–15% of the text.

Duke no longer giving numerical rating to standardized testing, essays in undergraduate admissions

essay on football conclusion

Duke is no longer giving essays and standardized testing scores numerical ratings in the undergraduate admissions process.

The change went into place this year, Dean of Undergraduate Admissions Christoph Guttentag wrote in an email to The Chronicle. He explained that essays are no longer receiving a score because of a rise in the use of generative artificial intelligence and college admissions consultants.

When asked about how the admissions office determines if an essay is AI-generated or written by consultants and if applicants are hurt if the office determines so, Guttentag answered that "there aren't simple answers to these questions."

Despite the changes, Guttentag wrote that essays and standardized testing scores are still considered in the admissions process.

“Essays are very much part of our understanding of the applicant, we’re just no longer assuming that the essay is an accurate reflection of the student’s actual writing ability,” he wrote. “Standardized tests (SAT or ACT) are considered when they’re submitted as part of the application.”

According to Guttentag, essays will now be used to “help understand the applicant as an individual rather, not just as a set of attributes and accomplishments.” He also wrote that the admissions office now values essays that give “insight into who the unique person is whose application we’re reading” and that “content and insight matter more than style.”

“Because of that they are not given a numerical rating, but considered as we think holistically about a candidate as a potential member of the Duke community,” he wrote.

Previously, the Duke admissions office would assign numerical ratings of one to five on six different categories: curriculum strength, academics, recommendations, essays, extracurriculars and test scores. Applicants would then receive a total score out of 30 by adding up each category’s numerical rating.

According to Guttentag, the only categories given numerical ratings now are the four categories that remain: “the strength of a student’s curriculum, their grades in academic courses, their extracurricular activities and the letters of recommendation.”

“There are naturally many, many more factors that are taken into account when making admissions decisions — these are just a partial but useful way of thinking [of] applicants in the context of the pool as a whole,” he wrote. “I suppose it may be something similar to looking at a player’s various statistics, which only give you a partial picture of the player’s contribution to the team.”

Guttentag noted that historically, numerical ratings have been “valuable in helping to identify competitive applicants.”

Admissions processes for colleges across the country have seen changes and experimentation recently due to a variety of factors, most notably the Supreme Court’s overturning of race-based affirmative action in June 2023 and changes to standardized testing requirements due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The Supreme Court decision was absolutely not a factor in how we decided to approach essays,” Guttentag wrote. Duke remained test-optional for the 2023-24 admissions cycle.

Please show some love to dying New Yorkers

It is traumatic to watch someone suffer as they are dying. Anyone who has experienced it will agree. Sadly, I’ve had that unfortunate experience with both my son and my mother. Like me, you’d probably want to do everything in your power to provide love and comfort to ease their pain and suffering.

Providing love and comfort is the perfect description of an end-of-life care option known as medical aid in dying. It allows an adult, capable of making their own health care decisions, with a confirmed prognosis of six months or less to live from an incurable and irreversible disease or illness, to request a prescription that they can take themselves — if they choose — to end their pain and suffering and die peacefully.

Let me be clear: Medical aid in dying is not giving up on life. This option simply gives those who are dying — with no chance of surviving the terminal illness — the ability to make their own decisions about the end of their lives.

The pain of sitting with a loved one as they wait to die in agony never goes away. To this day, I can still hear my son gasping for breath. In the end, there was no hope for survival, and very little we could do to help him avoid suffering.

While my son was dying from complications from Hodgkin’s lymphoma, my mother was dealing with terminal breast cancer. She prayed to die so her pain would stop, but there was nothing anyone could do. It is still difficult for me to talk about that dark time.

There have been many advances in cancer-fighting treatments and therapies since then, and we will continue to see further advances, providing more opportunities for people with cancer to live long, productive, enjoyable lives.

I am a founding member of 1 in 9: The Long Island Breast Cancer Action Coalition, and the founder of Hewlett House, a community resource center providing services to cancer patients on Long Island and in the five boroughs. This safe haven for cancer patients, now in its 20th year, has witnessed a lot of joy and a lot of pain. I have spent countless hours talking with people who are five, 10 and 20 years into their cancer journeys. They make me smile. But I’ve also spent hours talking to those who have been told there is nothing else that can be done. All of their treatment options are exhausted, and they are left without any choices.

I am a five-time cancer survivor, and I continue to fight every day against this disease. However, I know there will be a day — hopefully, a long time away — when my time will come and I cannot fight anymore. I want the option of medical aid in dying. While I may not decide to take the medication to end my life, I want that option. I’ve earned that option. We’ve all earned that option — whether or not we choose to take it.

Passing legislation to give us that choice would be a gift. We need to have the right to say goodbye to those we love and give them the messages we know they need to hear. We deserve to have the option to end our suffering when there are no other options left to us.

I call on our state legislators to pass the Medical Aid in Dying Act this session. Show your constituents some love as they face their final days.

How to get away with AI-generated essays

Prof Paul Kleiman on putting ChatGPT to the test on his work. Plus letters from Michael Bulley and Dr Paul Flewers

No wonder Robert Topinka found himself in a quandary ( The software says my student cheated using AI. They say they’re innocent. Who do I believe?, 13 February ). To test ChatGPT’s abilities and weaknesses, I asked it to write a short essay on a particular topic that I specialised in. Before looking at what it produced, I wrote my own 100% original short essay on the same topic. I then submitted both pieces to ChatGPT and asked it to identify whether they were written by AI or a human. It immediately identified the first piece as AI-generated. But then it also said that my essay “was probably generated by AI”.

I concluded that if you write well, in logical, appropriate and grammatically correct English, then the chances are that it will be deemed to be AI-generated. To avoid detection, write badly. Prof Paul Kleiman Truro, Cornwall

Robert Topinka gets into a twist about whether his student’s essay was genuine or produced by AI. The obvious solution is for such work not to contribute to the final degree qualification. Then there would be no point in cheating.

Let there be real chat between teachers and students rather than ChatGPT , and let the degree be decided only by exams, with surprise questions, done in an exam room with pen and paper, and not a computer in sight. Michael Bulley Chalon-sur-Saône, France

Dr Robert Topinka overlooks a crucial factor with respect to student cheating – so long as a degree is a requirement to obtain a reasonable job, then chicanery is inevitable. When I left school at 16 in the early 1970s, an administrative job could be had with a few O-levels; when I finished my PhD two decades ago and was looking for that sort of job, each one required A-levels, and often a degree. I was a mature student, studying for my own edification, and so cheating was self-defeating. Cheating will stop being a major problem only when students attend university primarily to learn for the sake of learning and not as a means of gaining employment. Dr Paul Flewers London

Why Data Breaches Spiked in 2023

  • Stuart Madnick

essay on football conclusion

And what companies can do to better secure users’ personal information.

In spite of recent efforts to beef up cybersecurity, data breaches — in which hackers steal personal data — continue to increase year-on-year: there was a 20% increase in data breaches from 2022 to 2023. There are three primary reasons behind this increased theft of personal data: (1) cloud misconfiguration, (2) new types of ransomware attacks, and (3) increased exploitation of vendor systems. Fortunately, there are ways to reduce the impact of each of these factors.

For many years, organizations have struggled to protect themselves from cyberattacks: companies, universities, and government agencies have expended enormous amounts of resources to secure themselves. But in spite of those efforts, data breaches — in which hackers steal personal data — continue to increase year-on-year: there was a 20% increase in data breaches from 2022 to 2023 . Some of the trends around this uptick are disturbing. For example, globally, there were twice the number of victims in 2023 compared to 2022, and in the Middle East, ransomware gang activity increased by 77% in that same timeframe.
