How to Write a Non-Cliche College Essay About Sports + Examples

Great Examples of College Essays About Sports

Where to get your college essay edited for free, or by an expert.

You’ve been brainstorming essay topics for your college applications, and you think you’ve finally found the right one: an extended metaphor likening your experience on the field with overcoming personal struggles. The problem: many other students have this same thought.

The purpose of a college essay is to make yourself stand out as a unique individual, but when students write about sports, they often blend in. Because of that, students are usually advised to pick a different topic.

That being said, it is possible to write a non-cliche college essay about sports if you put in a little extra effort. Read along to learn how to make your sports essay different from all the other sports essays.

Sports essays are cliche when they follow a standard trajectory. Some of these trajectories include writing a story about:

  • An agonizing defeat
  • Forging bonds with teammates
  • Overcoming adversity
  • Overcoming an injury
  • Refusing to quit
  • Victory during a big game

Because sports essays have very similar themes and “lessons learned,” it can be difficult to make your story stand out. These trajectories also often focus too much on the sport or storyline, and not enough on the writer’s reflections and personality.

As you write your essay, try to think about what your experience says about you rather than what you learned from your experience. You are more than just one lesson you learned!

(Keep in mind that the sports essay is not the only college essay cliche. Learn about other essay cliches and how to fix them in our complete guide).

How to Make Your Sports Essay Unique

1. focus on a specific moment or reflection..

The college essay is a way for students to humanize themselves to admissions officers. You do not feel human if you are describing yourself as just another player on the field!

One important way to make your essay about you (not just about sports) is by focusing on a specific moment in time and inviting the reader to join you in that moment. Explain to the reader what it would be like to be sitting in that locker room as you questioned the values of the other players on your team. Ask your reader to sit with you on the cot in the trainer’s room as your identity was stripped away from you when they said “your body can’t take this anymore.” Bring your reader to the dinner table and involve them in your family’s conversation about how sports were affecting your mental health and your treatment of those around you.

Intense descriptions of a specific experience will evoke emotions in your reader and allow them to connect with you and feel for you.

When in doubt, avoid anything that can be covered by ESPN. On ESPN, we see the games, we see the benches, we even see the locker rooms and training rooms. Take your reader somewhere different and show them something unique.

2. Use sports to point out broader themes in your life.

The main risk when writing about sports is neglecting to write about yourself. Before you get started, think about the main values that you want to express in your sports essay. Sports are simply your avenue for telling the reader what makes you unique.

As a test, imagine if you were a pianist. Would you be able to talk about these same values? What if you were a writer? Or a chemist? Articulating your values is the end, and sports should simply be your means.

Some values that you might want to focus on:

  • Autonomy (you want to be able to set your mind to anything and achieve it on your own)
  • Growth (you seek improvement constantly)
  • Curiosity (you are willing to try anything once)
  • Vulnerability (you aren’t afraid to fail, as long as you give it your all)
  • Community (you value the feedback of others and need camaraderie to succeed)
  • Craft (you think that with deliberate care, anything can be perfected)
  • Responsibility (you believe that you owe something to those around you and perhaps they also owe something to you)

You can use the ESPN check again to make sure that you are using sports as an avenue to show your depth.

Things ESPN covers: how a player reacts to defeat, how injuries affect a player’s gameplay/attitude, how players who don’t normally work well together are working together on their new team.

Things ESPN doesn’t cover: the conversation that a player had with their mother about fear of death before going into a big surgery (value: family and connection), the ways that the intense pressure to succeed consumed a player to the point they couldn’t be there for the people in their life (value: supporting others and community), the body image issues that weigh on a player’s mind when playing their sport and how they overcame those (value: health and growth).

3. Turn a cliche storyline on its head.

There’s no getting around the fact that sports essays are often cliche. But there is a way to confront the cliche head-on. For example, lots of people write essays about the lessons they learned from an injury, victory, and so on, but fewer students explain how they are embracing those lessons.

Perhaps you learned that competition is overwhelming for you and you prefer teamwork, so you switched from playing basketball to playing Dungeons & Dragons. Maybe, when your softball career ended abruptly, you had to find a new identity and that’s when you became obsessed with your flower garden and decided to pursue botany. Or maybe, you have stuck with football through it all, but your junior-year mental health struggle showed you that football should be fun and you have since started a nonprofit for local children to healthily engage with sports.

If your story itself is more cliche, try bringing readers to the present moment with you and show why the cliche matters and what it did for you. This requires a fair amount of creativity. Ensure you’re not parroting a frequently used topic by really thinking deeply to find your own unique spin.

Night had robbed the academy of its daytime colors, yet there was comfort in the dim lights that cast shadows of our advances against the bare studio walls. Silhouettes of roundhouse kicks, spin crescent kicks, uppercuts and the occasional butterfly kick danced while we sparred. She approached me, eyes narrowed with the trace of a smirk challenging me. “Ready spar!” Her arm began an upward trajectory targeting my shoulder, a common first move. I sidestepped — only to almost collide with another flying fist. Pivoting my right foot, I snapped my left leg, aiming my heel at her midsection. The center judge raised one finger.

There was no time to celebrate, not in the traditional sense at least. Master Pollard gave a brief command greeted with a unanimous “Yes, sir” and the thud of 20 hands dropping-down-and-giving-him-30, while the “winners” celebrated their victory with laps as usual.

Three years ago, seven-thirty in the evening meant I was a warrior. It meant standing up straighter, pushing a little harder, “Yes, sir” and “Yes, ma’am”, celebrating birthdays by breaking boards, never pointing your toes, and familiarity. Three years later, seven-thirty in the morning meant I was nervous.

The room is uncomfortably large. The sprung floor soaks up the checkerboard of sunlight piercing through the colonial windows. The mirrored walls further illuminate the studio and I feel the light scrutinizing my sorry attempts at a pas de bourrée, while capturing the organic fluidity of the dancers around me. “Chassé en croix, grand battement, pique, pirouette.” I follow the graceful limbs of the woman in front of me, her legs floating ribbons, as she executes what seems to be a perfect ronds de jambes. Each movement remains a negotiation. With admirable patience, Ms. Tan casts me a sympathetic glance.

There is no time to wallow in the misery that is my right foot. Taekwondo calls for dorsiflexion; pointed toes are synonymous with broken toes. My thoughts drag me into a flashback of the usual response to this painful mistake: “You might as well grab a tutu and head to the ballet studio next door.” Well, here I am Master Pollard, unfortunately still following your orders to never point my toes, but no longer feeling the satisfaction that comes with being a third degree black belt with 5 years of experience quite literally under her belt. It’s like being a white belt again — just in a leotard and ballet slippers.

But the appetite for new beginnings that brought me here doesn’t falter. It is only reinforced by the classical rendition of “Dancing Queen” that floods the room and the ghost of familiarity that reassures me that this new beginning does not and will not erase the past. After years spent at the top, it’s hard to start over. But surrendering what you are only leads you to what you may become. In Taekwondo, we started each class reciting the tenets: honor, courtesy, integrity, perseverance, self-control, courage, humility, and knowledge, and I have never felt that I embodied those traits more so than when I started ballet.

The thing about change is that it eventually stops making things so different. After nine different schools, four different countries, three different continents, fluency in Tamil, Norwegian, and English, there are more blurred lines than there are clear fragments. My life has not been a tactfully executed, gold medal-worthy Taekwondo form with each movement defined, nor has it been a series of frappés performed by a prima ballerina with each extension identical and precise, but thankfully it has been like the dynamics of a spinning back kick, fluid, and like my chances of landing a pirouette, unpredictable.

Why it works:

What’s especially powerful about this essay is that the author uses detailed imagery to convey a picture of what they’re experiencing, so much so that the reader is along for the ride. This works as a sports essay not only because of the language and sensory details, but also because the writer focuses on a specific moment in time, while at the same time exploring why Taekwondo is such an important part of their life.

After the emotional image is created, the student finishes their essay with valuable reflection. With the reflection, they show admissions officers that they are mature and self-aware. Self-awareness comes through with statements like “surrendering what you are only leads you to what you may become” and maturity can be seen through the student’s discussion of values “honor, courtesy, integrity, perseverance, self-control, courage, humility, and knowledge, and I have never felt that I embodied those traits more so than when I started ballet.” These are the kinds of comments that should find their way into a sports essay!

“Advanced females ages 13 to 14 please proceed to staging with your coaches at this time.” Skittering around the room, eyes wide and pleading, I frantically explained my situation to nearby coaches. The seconds ticked away in my head; every polite refusal increased my desperation.

Despair weighed me down. I sank to my knees as a stream of competitors, coaches, and officials flowed around me. My dojang had no coach, and the tournament rules prohibited me from competing without one.

Although I wanted to remain strong, doubts began to cloud my mind. I could not help wondering: what was the point of perfecting my skills if I would never even compete? The other members of my team, who had found coaches minutes earlier, attempted to comfort me, but I barely heard their words. They couldn’t understand my despair at being left on the outside, and I never wanted them to understand.

Since my first lesson 12 years ago, the members of my dojang have become family. I have watched them grow up, finding my own happiness in theirs. Together, we have honed our kicks, blocks, and strikes. We have pushed one another to aim higher and become better martial artists. Although my dojang had searched for a reliable coach for years, we had not found one. When we attended competitions in the past, my teammates and I had always gotten lucky and found a sympathetic coach. Now, I knew this practice was unsustainable. It would devastate me to see the other members of my dojang in my situation, unable to compete and losing hope as a result. My dojang needed a coach, and I decided it was up to me to find one.

I first approached the adults in the dojang – both instructors and members’ parents. However, these attempts only reacquainted me with polite refusals. Everyone I asked told me they couldn’t devote multiple weekends per year to competitions. I soon realized that I would have become the coach myself.

At first, the inner workings of tournaments were a mystery to me. To prepare myself for success as a coach, I spent the next year as an official and took coaching classes on the side. I learned everything from motivational strategies to technical, behind-the-scenes components of Taekwondo competitions. Though I emerged with new knowledge and confidence in my capabilities, others did not share this faith.

Parents threw me disbelieving looks when they learned that their children’s coach was only a child herself. My self-confidence was my armor, deflecting their surly glances. Every armor is penetrable, however, and as the relentless barrage of doubts pounded my resilience, it began to wear down. I grew unsure of my own abilities.

Despite the attack, I refused to give up. When I saw the shining eyes of the youngest students preparing for their first competition, I knew I couldn’t let them down. To quit would be to set them up to be barred from competing like I was. The knowledge that I could solve my dojang’s longtime problem motivated me to overcome my apprehension.

Now that my dojang flourishes at competitions, the attacks on me have weakened, but not ended. I may never win the approval of every parent; at times, I am still tormented by doubts, but I find solace in the fact that members of my dojang now only worry about competing to the best of their abilities.

Now, as I arrive at a tournament with my students, I close my eyes and remember the past. I visualize the frantic search for a coach and the chaos amongst my teammates as we compete with one another to find coaches before the staging calls for our respective divisions. I open my eyes to the exact opposite scene. Lacking a coach hurt my ability to compete, but I am proud to know that no member of my dojang will have to face that problem again.

In the beginning, you might think this is another cliche sports essay about overcoming adversity. But instead, it becomes a unique statement and coming-of-age tale that reads as a suspenseful narrative.

The author connects their experience with martial arts to larger themes in their life but manages to do so without riffing off of tried-and-true themes. Through statements like “I knew I couldn’t let them down. To quit would be to set them up to be barred from competing like I was” we learn about the students values and their desire to be there for those who depend on them.

The student also brings it full circle, demonstrating their true transformation. By using the “Same, but Different” ending technique , the student places themself in the same environment that we saw in the intro, but experiences it differently due to their actions throughout the narrative. This is very compelling!

“1…2…3…4 pirouettes! New record!” My friends cheered as I landed my turns. Pleased with my progress, I gazed down at my worn-out pointe shoes. The sweltering blisters, numbing ice-baths, and draining late-night practices did not seem so bad after all. Next goal: five turns.

For as long as I can remember, ballet, in all its finesse and glamor, had kept me driven day to day. As a child, the lithe ballerinas, donning ethereal costumes as they floated across the stage, were my motivation. While others admired Messi and Adele, I idolized Carlos Acosta, principal dancer of the Royal Ballet.

As I devoted more time and energy towards my craft, I became obsessed with improving my technique. I would stretch for hours after class, forcing my leg one inch higher in an effort to mirror the Dance Magazine cover girls. I injured my feet and ruined pair after pair of pointe shoes, turning on wood, cement, and even grass to improve my balance as I spun. At competitions, the dancers with the 180-degree leg extensions, endless turns, and soaring leaps—the ones who received “Bravos!” from the roaring audience—further pushed me to refine my skills and perfect my form. I believed that, with enough determination, I would one day attain their level of perfection. Reaching the quadruple-pirouette milestone only intensified my desire to accomplish even more.

My efforts seemed to have come to fruition two summers ago when I was accepted to dance with Moscow’s Bolshoi Ballet at their renowned New York City summer intensive. I walked into my first session eager to learn from distinguished ballet masters and worldly dancers, already anticipating my improvement. Yet, as I danced alongside the accomplished ballerinas, I felt out of place. Despite their clean technique and professional training, they did not aim for glorious leg extensions or prodigious leaps. When they performed their turn combinations, most of them only executed two turns as I attempted four.

“Dancers, double-pirouettes only.”

Taken aback and confused, I wondered why our teacher expected so little from us. The other ballerinas seemed content, gracing the studio with their simple movements.

As I grew closer with my Moscow roommates, I gradually learned that their training emphasized the history of the art form instead of stylistic tricks. Rather than show off their physical ability, their performances aimed to convey a story, one that embodied the rich culture of ballet and captured both the legacy of the dancers before them and their own artistry. As I observed my friends more intently in repertoire class, I felt the pain of the grief-stricken white swan from Swan Lake, the sass of the flirtatious Kitri from Don Quijote, and I gradually saw what I had overlooked before. My definition of talent had been molded by crowd-pleasing elements—whirring pirouettes, gravity-defying leaps, and mind-blowing leg extensions. This mindset slowly stripped me from the roots of my passion and my personal connection with ballet.

With the Bolshoi, I learned to step back and explore the meaning behind each step and the people behind the scenes. Ballet carries history in its movements, from the societal values of the era to each choreographer’s unique flair. As I uncovered the messages behind each pirouette, kick, and jump, my appreciation for ballet grew beyond my obsession with raw athleticism and developed into a love for the art form’s emotive abilities in bridging the dancers with the audience. My journey as an artist has allowed me to see how technical execution is only the means to a greater understanding between dancer and spectator, between storyteller and listener. The elegance and complexity of ballet does not revolve around astonishing stunts but rather the evocative strength and artistry manifested in the dancer, in me. It is the combination of sentiments, history, tradition, and passion that has allowed ballet and its lessons of human connection to become my lifestyle both on and off stage.

This essay is about lessons. While the author is a dancer, this narrative isn’t really about ballet, per se — it’s about the author’s personal growth. It is purposefully reflective as the student shows a nice character arc that begins with an eager young ballerina and ends with a reflection on their past. The primary strength of this essay is the honesty and authenticity that the student approaches it with.

In the end, the student turns a cliche on its head as they embrace the idea of overcoming adversity and demonstrate how the adversity, in this case, was their own stereotypes about their art. It’s beautiful!

“Getting beat is one thing – it’s part of competing – but I want no part in losing.” Coach Rob Stark’s motto never fails to remind me of his encouragement on early-morning bus rides to track meets around the state. I’ve always appreciated the phrase, but an experience last June helped me understand its more profound, universal meaning.

Stark, as we affectionately call him, has coached track at my high school for 25 years. His care, dedication, and emphasis on developing good character has left an enduring impact on me and hundreds of other students. Not only did he help me discover my talent and love for running, but he also taught me the importance of commitment and discipline and to approach every endeavor with the passion and intensity that I bring to running. When I learned a neighboring high school had dedicated their track to a longtime coach, I felt that Stark deserved similar honors.

Our school district’s board of education indicated they would only dedicate our track to Stark if I could demonstrate that he was extraordinary. I took charge and mobilized my teammates to distribute petitions, reach out to alumni, and compile statistics on the many team and individual champions Stark had coached over the years. We received astounding support, collecting almost 3,000 signatures and pages of endorsements from across the community. With help from my teammates, I presented this evidence to the board.

They didn’t bite.

Most members argued that dedicating the track was a low priority. Knowing that we had to act quickly to convince them of its importance, I called a team meeting where we drafted a rebuttal for the next board meeting. To my surprise, they chose me to deliver it. I was far from the best public speaker in the group, and I felt nervous about going before the unsympathetic board again. However, at that second meeting, I discovered that I enjoy articulating and arguing for something that I’m passionate about.

Public speaking resembles a cross country race. Walking to the starting line, you have to trust your training and quell your last minute doubts. When the gun fires, you can’t think too hard about anything; your performance has to be instinctual, natural, even relaxed. At the next board meeting, the podium was my starting line. As I walked up to it, familiar butterflies fluttered in my stomach. Instead of the track stretching out in front of me, I faced the vast audience of teachers, board members, and my teammates. I felt my adrenaline build, and reassured myself: I’ve put in the work, my argument is powerful and sound. As the board president told me to introduce myself, I heard, “runners set” in the back of my mind. She finished speaking, and Bang! The brief silence was the gunshot for me to begin.

The next few minutes blurred together, but when the dust settled, I knew from the board members’ expressions and the audience’s thunderous approval that I had run quite a race. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough; the board voted down our proposal. I was disappointed, but proud of myself, my team, and our collaboration off the track. We stood up for a cause we believed in, and I overcame my worries about being a leader. Although I discovered that changing the status quo through an elected body can be a painstakingly difficult process and requires perseverance, I learned that I enjoy the challenges this effort offers. Last month, one of the school board members joked that I had become a “regular” – I now often show up to meetings to advocate for a variety of causes, including better environmental practices in cafeterias and safer equipment for athletes.

Just as Stark taught me, I worked passionately to achieve my goal. I may have been beaten when I appealed to the board, but I certainly didn’t lose, and that would have made Stark proud.

This essay uses the idea of sports to explore a more profound topic—growing through relationships. They really embrace using sports as an avenue to tell the reader about a specific experience that changed the way they approach the world.

The emphasis on relationships is why this essay works well and doesn’t fall into a cliche. The narrator grows not because of their experience with track but because of their relationship with their coach, who inspired them to evolve and become a leader.

Writing an essay about a famous football player can be an exciting and rewarding task, especially if you are a football enthusiast or a student interested in sports. However, it requires careful planning, research, and a structured approach to effectively capture the essence of the player's life, career, and impact on the sport. This guide will walk you through the steps to create a compelling and informative essay about a renowned football player.

Choose the Right Player

Before diving into the writing process, you need to select a football player who not only interests you but also has a significant impact on the sport. Opt for someone who has left a lasting legacy, achieved remarkable feats, or has a compelling life story. Some examples include Pelé, Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, and Diego Maradona.

Conduct Thorough Research

To craft an essay that resonates with your audience, you need to gather substantial information about your chosen football player. Utilize various sources such as books, articles, interviews, documentaries, and credible websites. Be sure to focus on the following aspects:

  • Early life and background.
  • Career milestones and achievements.
  • Playing style and techniques.
  • Personal life, including family and upbringing.
  • Contributions to the sport and society.
  • Challenges and setbacks faced.

Create an Outline

An outline will help you organize your thoughts and ideas and save you time. This will serve as a roadmap for your essay and help maintain a logical flow. A basic outline might include:

  • Introduction: Introduce the player and provide a brief overview of their significance.
  • Early Life: Discuss the player's background and upbringing.
  • Football Career: Highlight key moments and milestones.
  • Playing Style: Explain the player's unique style and techniques.
  • Impact and Legacy: Explore the player's contributions to football and society.
  • Challenges Faced: Discuss any obstacles or setbacks encountered.
  • Conclusion: Summarize the player's overall influence and importance.

Craft a Captivating Introduction

Start your essay with a catchy introduction that sets the tone for the rest of the paper. You can start with an interesting anecdote, a relevant quote, or a thought-provoking question about the player. Clearly state the purpose of your essay and provide a brief overview. Thus, readers would know what to expect.

Provide Insight into the Early Life

In the section about the player's early life and background, delve into their upbringing, family, and the circumstances that shaped them into the football legend they became. Highlight any pivotal moments or influences that set them on their path to football greatness.

Explore the Football Career

One of the central components of your essay should focus on the player's football career. Discuss their achievements, records, and memorable moments on the field. Include statistics and accolades to showcase their prowess. Don't forget to touch upon significant matches, tournaments, or clubs they played for.

Analyze Playing Style and Techniques

To provide a deeper understanding of your chosen player, analyze their playing style and techniques. Explain what made them stand out from other players and how their skills contributed to their success. Use specific examples and stories from life to illustrate their prowess.

Highlight Contributions and Impact

Football players often transcend the field and make a significant impact on society, culture, or charity work. Highlight these contributions and discuss how they have influenced the sport or inspired others. Whether it's through philanthropy, advocacy, or leadership, this aspect adds depth to your essay.

Address Challenges and Setbacks

No football player's journey is without challenges or setbacks. Discuss the obstacles your chosen player faced, whether it was injuries, controversies, or personal struggles. Emphasize how they overcame these challenges and emerged stronger.

Craft a Powerful Conclusion

In your conclusion, reiterate the player's importance and legacy in the world of football. Summarize the key points you've discussed and leave your readers with a final thought or reflection on the player's impact. Avoid introducing new information in the conclusion.

Proofread and Edit

Before submitting your essay, proofread it carefully to eliminate grammatical errors, spelling mistakes, and formatting issues. Ensure that your writing is clear, concise, and flows smoothly. You can use services like Grammarly or LanguageTool to help you check your essay for any spelling and grammar mistakes. It may also be helpful to have someone else review your work for feedback. And if you face troubles, don't hesitate to reach out and say, ' Write essay for me ,' to professional essay writing services. Besides, don't forget to check your work for plagiarism.

Cite Your Sources

Finally, make sure to properly cite all the sources you used in your research. Follow a citation style such as MLA, APA, or Chicago, depending on your instructor's guidelines. We recommend gathering all the sources during your research stage to keep them all in one place.

Writing an essay about a famous football player is an opportunity to explore the life, career, and impact of a sports legend. By choosing the right player, conducting thorough research, and following a structured approach, you can create a compelling and informative essay that captivates your audience. Remember to showcase the player's achievements, unique style, contributions to the sport, and their enduring legacy. 4.   Extreme Sports by Archie Simmons

“Various news stories, movies, and other sources in the media help spread the impression of the risks and dangers of the sports. Although the public hears mostly about all the negative effects of extreme sports, there are a variety of ways to decrease one’s risk of injuries through proper precautions and practice. In saying that, there are also many benefits to extreme sports as seen in Bode Miller’s memoir, as well as interviews with other extreme sport athletes.”

Simmons gives a brief introduction to the world of extreme sports in his essay. Extreme sports require specialized gear and much preparation and has an increased risk of injury. 5. The Mental Health Awakening Has Reached the Sports World  — Now What? by Maggie Ryan

“Sports can provide community, boost physical and mental health, foster self-confidence, and serve as an escape. Sports can also be the opposite of all those things: isolating, physically and mentally debilitating, or something that athletes can come to dread. The dividing line between the two, Post says, lies in the tools and preventative care that athletes have at their disposal.”

Ryan writes about the effects of competitive sports on athletes’ mental health. Sometimes athletes are pressured into making sports the center of their lives, affecting their mental health and social life to their detriment. Ryan cites several athletes who have been open about their struggles, including Simone Biles and Jasmine Blocker. The industry must work on this issue and break the stigma around mental health.

Long Essay On My Favourite Sportsperson

Sport is a great way to get your body moving and your mind working, and there are so many different sports to choose from! In this essay, I’ll be discussing my favourite sport, football. You might be thinking ‘who isn’t a fan of football?’ But before we get into the nitty gritty of why I love the sport, let me tell you a little bit about myself.

Who is your favourite sportsperson?

There is no one sportsperson that I absolutely idolize. However, there are a few that come close to the top of my list. These athletes have displayed exemplary skills and dedication both on and off the court, making them some of my favourites.

1) LeBron James – LeBron James is without a doubt my favourite sportsperson. He has always been one of the best players in the NBA, and has continued to amaze spectators with his talents even after joining the Lakers. His drive and determination are unparalleled, and he never gives up on his dreams. He is an inspiration to all young athletes out there, and I look forward to watching him continue to dominate the league for years to come.

2) Serena Williams – Serena Williams is another amazing athlete who I enjoy watching tremendously. She is a multiple Grand Slam champion, as well as being ranked number 1 in the world numerous times. Her play both on Court and off is exciting to watch, and she always seems to bring her A-game when it matters most. Her hard work ethic is admirable, and she truly represents what it means to be a dedicated athlete.

3) Michael Jordan – Michael Jordan may not be currently playing at the same level as he did in his early days, but that does not mean he isn’t still one of the greatest basketball players ever. His talent was simply unmatched, and he inspired countless youngsters to pick up a ball and try their hand at this amazing sport . His competitive spirit and willingness to give everything he has on the court is admirable, and I admire him for that more than anything. He will always be one of my favourites.

Why are they your favourite?

There are many reasons why I love the sportsperson that I do. Some of it is due to the person’s individual characteristics, such as their athletic prowess or their charisma on and off the field. But some of it is simply because they represent everything that is great about sports, and I admire them for it.

Some of my favourite sportspersons have a combination of both personal and professional qualities that appeal to me. They are both talented and successful, but they also have a down-to-earth personality that makes them relatable. They are also willing to give back to their community, whether through charity work or by supporting other athletes in their competitions.

Ultimately, what draws me to these sporting heroes is their passion for the game. Whether they are playing for fun or trying to win a championship, these individuals are fully committed to their craft. And that dedication is something that I admire deeply.

What makes them stand out from the rest?

When it comes to sport, there are few people who can boast the level of success and acclaim that athletes such as Pele, Michael Jordan and LeBron James have achieved. However, there are a select few sportspersons who transcend the sport they play to become universally admired figures. These individuals are known for their thrilling performances on the field or court, their charismatic personalities and, most importantly, for their passion for their chosen sport.

One such sportsman is Roger Federer. A Swiss national, Federer has cemented himself as one of the greatest tennis players of all time and is widely considered to be one of the best ambassadors for his sport. He has won 16 Grand Slam titles – more than any other man in history – including seven Wimbledon Championships and five US Open Championships. His exceptional record on both hardcourt surfaces and grass courts has made him one of the most popular athletes in the world.

Federer’s unique mix of athleticism, artistry and charisma has drawn legions of fans around the world. His love affair with tennis is evident in everything he does – from his playing style to his celebrations on court. Federer is a true ambassador for tennis, not only on a professional level but also off it; he is heavily involved in charitable work and regularly gives back to his community through initiatives such as The Roger Federer Foundation.

Federer’s achievements on the tennis court have made him an icon not only within his own sport but also within the global community. He is a role model to aspiring athletes, and his passion for tennis has inspired generations of fans to get involved in the sport themselves. Federer’s achievements are truly unique and make him one of the most celebrated sportsmen in the world.

What would you say is their biggest strength?

There is no single answer to this question as athletes have different strengths that make them successful. However, some of the most common characteristics that make an athlete successful are discipline, determination, and hard work.

Discipline is key for any athlete, and it is especially important for athletes who compete in sports with a high level of skill or competition. Athletes need to be able to focus on their goals and stay focused during competitions. Discipline also translates into other areas of life – if an athlete is able to maintain discipline in their everyday life, they are likely to be successful in other endeavors as well.

Athletes also need determination. It can be difficult for athletes to continue working hard even when they are not winning or making progress. They must have the will power to keep going even when things are not going their way. This determination enables athletes to overcome difficult challenges and reach their goals.

Finally, hard work is essential for any athlete who wants to achieve success. Hard work does not guarantee success, but it is definitely necessary. If an athlete does not put in the time and effort required to be successful, there is no chance of achieving goals.

What would you say is their biggest weakness?

When it comes to their sport, many people would say that one of the athletes’ biggest weaknesses is their lack of discipline. They can be very impulsive, and this can lead to them making poor choices on the field or court. Another common flaw for many athletes is a lack of focus. They may be able to perform at a high level for short periods of time, but they will struggle when it comes to sustaining a high level of performance over an extended period of time.

If you could have one word to describe them, what would it be?

I absolutely adore athletes who are very disciplined and work hard at their sport. To me, these athletes embody the word “hardworking”. They never give up, no matter how tough the challenge seems. I admire their dedication to their sport and the passion they have for it. Some of my favourites in this category are Serena Williams, Michael Jordan, and Usain Bolt.

Each of these athletes is highly acclaimed for their incredible accomplishments in their respective sports. Serena Williams is a world champion tennis player who has won 22 singles titles and six doubles titles. Michael Jordan is considered one of the greatest basketball players of all time, with six NBA championships and more than thirty-five MVP awards to his name. And Usain Bolt is an Olympic champion sprinter who has won eight gold medals in total: four in the 100 metres, two in the 200 metre sprint, and two in the 4×100 metre relay.

These athletes are truly phenomenal examples of hard work and determinationpaying off handsomely in terms of accolades and fame. They have inspired me to be more dedicated to my own personal goals, and to never give up on anything I set out to do.

College Essay Myths Debunked: Yes, You Can Write About Sports

Ivy Divider

The notion that all students who play sports write college essays about their athletic pursuits is simply inaccurate. Last year one our our students, a star football player, wrote about his aptitude for solving puzzles. Another student on the school rowing team wrote about her family’s immigration story. Athletes are not just athletes — they are complex humans with varied talents and experiences, many of which are worth exploring in essay form. Still, it is impractical to think that students who devote thirty hours or more of their lives each week to a sport, won’t feel compelled to write about their passion for soccer or aptitude for tennis or cheerleading. And rightfully so. Sports teach valuable skills like leadership, teamwork and discipline. They foster bonds of friendship that often last decades or longer. A working knowledge of sports can even be a lifelong conversation starter among strangers.

Students do not have to shy away from detailing these experiences and what they learned from them — they just have to shift the lens, add another layer, or approach these topics from creative perspectives to make them both original and reflective of a greater range of interests and talents. For example, maybe your experience diving for the ball as a volleyball player allowed you to take a risk in applying for the job of your dreams. Perhaps the qualities needed to be a good basketball player and also the skills needed to command a boardroom. Students might want to steer away from major tropes like getting injured before a big game or scoring the winning goal — though if those stories are treated with sincerity and an innovative perspective, they can make for effective essays as well. The test of whether or not you have achieved the level of creativity necessary to set a sports essay apart from all the rest is this: Could any other basketball player have written your essay? If another lacrosse player put her name on your application, would the details still be mostly accurate? If the answer is yes, find another way in; add another twist; push towards a more compelling and creative conclusion. So, yes, you can write a sports essay — it just has to be a sports essay unlike any other.

My Favourite Sport Essay 100 words

I am a great fan of basketball. I used to practice this game since I was in class 5th. My parents and my coach encouraged me a lot to perform well in my favourite sport. I believe that it is a game that combines strategy, athleticism, and teamwork . The best thing I like about this sport is the dribbling of the basketball. I love playing basketball with my friends at the society’s basketball court.

We used to gather every evening at 6:30 and play a match regularly to maintain the stamina and the pace of precision shooting. The winning situation in this game is completely dependent on teamwork, the result could be truly magical. Basketball is the sport that keeps me captivated with its adrenaline-pumping excitement.

Essay on My Favourite 250 words

My favourite sport is everyone’s favourite. Yes, Cricket it is. Cricket is often known as the ‘ Gentleman’s Game .’ Almost every Indian loves cricket for us this sport is not just a game it is an emotion. The entire Nation keeps a keen eye on the World Cup match when our country is performing.

My idol is Hon’ble Sachin Tendulkar and MS Dhoni. In my childhood, I tried to copy their style and always wished to be a good cricket player. As it is rightly said ‘Practice makes a Man Perfect.’ I also believed in it and practised with my school cricket team to become a good cricket player. My endurance and dedication helped me to secure the position of opening batsman for the school cricket team and we are presenting our school at the district-level cricket competition.

The main reason cricket resonates with me is its rich history and traditions. It’s a sport that has been played for centuries, and it carries with it a sense of timelessness. The iconic venues, the legends of the game, and the celebrated rivalries all contribute to the sport’s allure. Whether it’s the Ashes battles between England and Australia or the fervent India-Pakistan contests, cricket has a way of gripping the hearts and minds of fans around the world.

Cricket not only teaches sportsmanship but also helps us learn about teamwork, patience, dedication, etc. My dream is to build a successful cricket career. To accomplish my goals I am planning to take admission in the cricket academy and learn from experts.

In conclusion, cricket is more than a sport to me; it’s a culture, a passion, and a source of endless joy in my life. Its rich heritage, technical intricacies, and life lessons will forever held close to my heart.

Essay on My Favourite Sport Badminton

Among all the indoor and outdoor activities, I love to play badminton the most. Badminton is played as an indoor and outdoor game but traditionally it was an indoor game. It is one of the most admired sports among children and adults. Badminton is my favourite sport because it requires speed, practice, precision, stamina, and accuracy all at the same time.

A player needs to be very attentive while playing badminton. When each stroke of the shuttle makes a ‘whoosh’ sound, it infuses a feeling of competitiveness and enthusiasm to perform extraordinarily against the opponent.

I am a huge admirer of Saina Nehwal and PV Sindhu. Watching them perform makes me feel so proud and more inclined towards the sport. It’s my dream to play a badminton tournament at the National level and win for the country.

Why character matters in sports, virtues and vices impact how we play on the sports field..

Updated April 12, 2024 | Reviewed by Lybi Ma

  • Character is required to maintain the integrity of the game.
  • Character matters outside of sports, and sports form our character.
  • It is not just what we do that matters but how we do it.

At the 2016 Olympic Games, a collision occurred in the 5,000-meter women’s track final. In the wake of athletes colliding, New Zealand runner Nikki Hamblin lay flat on the track. She was startled when American runner, Abbey D’Agostino, extended a hand and helped her to her feet. [1] The two women, both injured, encouraged one another and worked their way to the finish together.

Having occurred on the biggest stage in sports, this was a moment of sportsmanship the whole world talked about. The two women were lauded as capturing the Olympic spirit, [2] and both were awarded the International Fair Play Committee Award for their high character and sportsmanship. [3]

Character and Sports

Moral character is integrally tied to sports. We praise an athlete’s virtue, alongside physical abilities. For example, we might laud a runner’s patience and closing speed, or a football player’s courage and brawn. We also speak of the formative role athletics can play in the development of our character—of the discipline it might develop. And we praise sportsmanship wherever we see it. We celebrate sportsmanship as capturing the spirit of sport, indicating that there is a normative dimension to athletics. There are good ways and bad ways to occupy sport.

We might wonder, in more precise terms, about the nature of this connection between character and athletics. Why does character matter in sports? There are a few reasons.

(1) Character is required to maintain the integrity of the game.

In 2000, American sprinter and long jumper, Marion Jones won three gold and two bronze medals in the Sydney Olympic Games. At her peak, she was among the greatest athletes on the planet. However, suspicions arose when her husband (a shot putter) tested positive for steroids. [4] Seven years later, she admitted to having done the same. [5]

This was a sad day for Jones’s fans and supporters, who were disappointed and made to feel naïve. Moving forward, it is unlikely that they will experience the same uncritical wonder or delight in encountering an excellent person. But the greatest disappointment was felt by Jones’s competitors, who lost both opportunities to shine and the financial security that comes from succeeding on the biggest stage. The events were fixed in favor of Jones, and the terms of success in their sport were subverted. These athletes can never get those moments back.

One reason for the integral connection between athletics and character is that a high degree of integrity is required to maintain the terms of a sport. When vices abound, the game itself ceases to be fair, and the athlete's dignity is no longer on display.

(2) Character matters outside of sports, and sports form our character.

When you ask people why they participate in athletics, they often say something about its transformational nature. They say that regular practice in biking, tennis, or walking will help them become better—more disciplined, healthier, or more patient. This transformative nature of athletics—that we enter in, expecting to be changed for the better—is another major reason why character matters in sports.

When you submit yourself to the objectives of a sport—becoming a more competent swimmer, for example—you change physically. But you also change in terms of your affections, your ability to self-govern, and your habits of attention . Character matters in sports because we change through sport. If we care about the kinds of people we are in general, it is important to examine whether we are being formed constructively. This is not always a given. If our pacing is imprudent, our emotions fickle, or our decisions uncourageous, we may be practicing being the kinds of people we do not want to be for the rest of our lives.

(3) Character is relevant to how we perform.

At the 2024 Super Bowl LVIII, featuring the San Francisco 49ers and the Kansas City Chiefs, the Chiefs—led by quarterback Patrick Mahomes—came away with their third victory in five years. The televised broadcast detailed the action on the field, in terms of strategy, yards gained, and ball movement. It also praised the players’ virtues—their patience, perseverance, and courage. Character matters, even for performance reasons. [6]

essay about sport player

It would be naïve to think that character is all that matters in sport. Relevant variables also include physical training, body size, strength, and good fortune. But all other variables held constant, a courageous football player will outperform one absent this trait. This is because he will experience a suitable fear of risk, which is relevant to successfully pressing the ball down the field. A patient curler will release a stone across the ice at the right moment, rather than too soon. A perseverant runner will be better positioned to endure in a distance competition than an irresolute runner. Virtues impact how we occupy the sport.

Of course, vices do as well. Envy informs how we relate to competitors, how we cope with loss, and whether we will a teammate’s good. Pride dictates whether we are correct about the limits of our capacities and how superior we feel to others. Intransigence informs whether we can stop when we ought, rather stubbornly persisting through injury or fatigue.

The point is that athletics is not a morally neutral space. The character we have will reveal itself in how we train and the ways we perform.

(4) It is not just what we do that matters but how we do it.

Imagine a wealthy donor giving a large sum of money to fund a children’s hospital. We might think this person is generous. Now imagine that we later discover this person gave money to satisfy his narcissism . He is trying to get his name on as many buildings as possible to garner praise. We would likely still be grateful for the donation, insofar as it helps children, but we would cease to think of this donor as having the virtue of generosity . This is because a common intuition of virtue is that part of what makes an action praiseworthy is the motivation by which we do good actions. [7] This is also true in sports.

Character matters because how we do things changes the nature of what we do. In sports, we often take an interest in the personal lives of the greatest athletes. We love telling stories about players taking hits for the sake of the team, and for competing for higher purposes than their own glory. We also praise sportsmanship like that of D’Agostino and Hamblin, as capturing the true meaning of sport.

Final Thoughts

Sports are not a morally neutral space. In part, character matters in athletics because a high level of integrity is required to maintain the terms of the games themselves, but character’s greater relevance is in the transformative role athletics plays in our lives. We are shaped by athletic practice, and character is implicated in how we perform. Indeed, part of what we love to praise in athletics is virtue—great feats of courage, patience, and perseverance.

Two years ago, soccer was not just a hobby, it was like my girlfriend.  And my story of being a soccer player in this sense is something like a relationship that has developed over time.

I was a little bit rebellious when I was young. I was playing everywhere, inside the house, in the street. I always bothered my neighbors and they were mad at me, arguing with my family everyday about my behavior, as though there was nothing else to talk about except my annoying act. We have a basement floor in my house and I spent all my time playing soccer there when I was not outside.  Once, while I was playing with my brother and my sister, I broke the arm and leg of some masterpiece sculpture which my mother loved and I remember that she got really upset about that. She took me out of the house that day and told me: “don’t you dare break one of the incredible things that I love, if you want to play, play outside the house!”

Eventually it got to the point that she talked with her friend about my behavior. Fortunately, her husband is a soccer coach for the Yarmok team from Kuwait, my country, and she told my mom that if I am interested in this particular sport she would talk to her husband about me in order to let him know that there is a new player who would like to join the team. After that my mom talked with me about joining Yarmok, but also emphasized that I should be assiduous in my school work because my performance in soccer was much better than my performance in school. I went to her husband and eventually he tested my skills over with some new players in order to find out how good a player I was and where my strengths were. Yarmok at the time had many quality players and he wanted to determine if I was a player good enough to join the team.

I had been playing with Yarmok for quite some time, when there was an extremely important match between my team and one of the highest ranked team in Kuwait. This particular match would take place in two months and I looked at it as an opportunity, thinking that I would have the change to prove myself in front of everybody, especially Kuwait Soccer Association. I was really practicing hard with my team and our coach gave us a lot of wonderful exercises that would be useful for the match. My concentration was steady during this time, and I honed my skills with my teammates in the soccer yard, following closely the instructions of our coach. Our team at the time was the weakest club in Kuwait, so I was looking forward to joining an excellent and one of the famous teams in my country and in the world at the same time, if my play was good enough.  I thought that by winning the match I could draw the attention of Kuwait Soccer Association or even the team that we would compete with because they would admire what I am capable of, for example, my skills in controlling the ball.  That was really my desire, to move forward and be part of a good team, I wanted my team to win every match. When I talked with the coach about this, he told me that I would have to attend training everyday and not miss a single practice. Finally, he said, “the ball is in your court.” I listened to his advice very carefully.

The big day arrived, the day that everybody has been waiting for.  The public believed that our opponents would defeat us just as easy as any other team, but we felt differently. We thought we were going to confront this team and, personally, I felt that I was going to show everybody that I was better than even my own teammates, so that I would be able to join a better and stronger team.

The match was about to start and all the players were prepared for it, even though there was an important player on my team who was absent due to an illness that he has been through. The atmosphere was exciting, as we put on our shoes, getting ready for the warm up that all teams perform before the match so as not only to avoid injuries, but to also be even more active, forceful, and energetic in the match. My ambition was to achieve two goals in a single moment, not only winning the match, but also joining the Kuwait national team, which I had always dreamed about.

The match started, the long sound of the whistle, the audience filling up all the seats and my family was there too, which made me more motivated, helping me towards a good performance in the match.  I played the best I could trying to show my skills and be fitter and more disciplined than anyone else on the field.

Towards the end of the game, with approximately 6 minutes and additional time remaining, an opposing player suddenly became very spiteful to me. He pushed me in an deliberate and calculated manner in order to take me out of the game, but as a result got a red card from referee. Unfortunately, I received a series injury and could not complete the rest the match. I remember clearly as a small car with two physiotherapists took me off the field so that they could examine what happened with my leg. They immediately began initiating some sort of natural therapy while I told them I have to complete the last four minutes of the match. They said, “we will do the best we can to kill the pain or treat the injury a little bit”, but they could not. I felt a sharp and constant pain in my leg, but because I was determined to continue, they also sprayed my leg with anesthetic spray. But that also did not help.  I was terribly upset about what was happening and my coach told me to not resume the match in order to not incur further injury to my leg and I reluctantly obeyed him.

We won the game, and the score was 1-0, a shocking result. It was truly a memorable game that I could not forget it and it remains present in my mind. It was a special moment and a truly wonderful memory also on a personal level, because the Kuwait national team chose me to be one of its members and to get the opportunity to know the new players who I was going play alongside. At that moment specifically, I could not believe what had happened: “is that true, is it true that I am one of the Kuwait national team players?”, I said to myself. In addition, they rewarded me as the best player in the game, we all received a gold medal and I hoisted the victory cup up in front of the audience and my family who were cheering me with their applause.

I could not believe that I had achieved all my goals, goals for which I had been suffering for, and it was amazing to think that I had finally accomplished them. My coach told me that my hard work was the reason why I achieved my goal, telling me that although I was an ambitious player but I would have to work hard, work dilligently, and be engaged. My family was very excited that we won the match and that I was also the best player in that match, although they were also concerned about my injury. I did not know that there is some sort of risk in this sport, but I learned this after my injury and I think every sport has its own type of danger. Typically, in soccer, the most hazardous area is the leg because of the pressure and force that is exerted upon the player’s legs during a match. After a long time of playing soccer, I can see soccer from another angle. I used to admire people who play soccer and playing soccer myself led me to injuries, but for me it was worth it, because that is what I love, and that’ is what I adore.

However, this is not only a story about soccer. This is a story about learning something, regardless of what your skills or your abilities are. It is also about unique experiences which the individual goes through. I would not have had the experiences I did if I did not set on the path that was offered to me. Certainly, some of these experiences will be negative, such as with the injury I received. However, these negative moments do not define the experience itself, they are only one part of the experience. There is a risk to every endeavor we take. But this risk does not determine our relationships to the things we love doing. If you have a favorite hobby, such as sports or anything you happen to be proficient in, even though the riskiness is there, it will not matter for you anyway, because the love for what you do is stronger than any element of risk.

Coaching Experience in Sport Essay

Introduction.

In sports, coaching has been fundamental tool managers use to enhance the development of team members. Each coach has given principles and ethics they utilize to achieve the desired outcome. Before commencing the training practices, the experienced must identify key areas that require improvement. Upon identifying the personal needs of a player, the manager formulates the most appropriate techniques that will enable the respective players to gain the necessary professional development. Since teams consist of many individuals, the coaches usually employ various coaching styles, which include democratic, autocratic, and holistic, based on the objective intended to be achieved. Despite the number of players in the team, sports managers ensure each person is respected and treated with the utmost respect. The aim is to make sure the possible ego of the coach remains invisible and the interest of the players is met. The aspect of coaching is an all-around practice that requires the leaders to have different abilities, including motivating, advising, analyzing, and coordinating relevant training programs to meet the development needs of all players in the team.

My Experience with Rugby Team Coaches

At the age of 15 when I was in grade 10, I developed an interest in playing rugby. The school head coach was one of the educators with whom I interacted frequently during class lessons. Following my physical fitness and the urge to enroll in the team, I applied for the chance to join division three of the rugby team. During this time, I had limited skills and competencies required to be an excellent player. In the category, several other individuals did not have the relevant abilities as well. The school had three coaches responsible for the training and development of each of the teams. After some duration and subsequent tests, I managed to break through to division two and then to the main team where I became one of the recognized players. The success of the processes was significantly influenced by the various head coaches. They undertook different roles and commitments to ensure they impart relevant skills to enhance the professional growth of each player. The managers used various coaching techniques that allowed the development to be easier and more achievable.

Coaching Process

Since coaching entails a series of events, the leaders ensure that the players derive maximum professional development to enhance their practices. Generally, it was the duty of the head coach to ensure all the multi-disciplinary approaches are utilized together to facilitate effective engagement. Before setting the goals and objectives for the team, the frontrunner used to take a close observation of each player, especially during training sessions (Sullivan et al., 2021). Afterward, the individual team member was contacted by the trainers to discuss the possible areas that require immediate adjustments. The coaching process was deeply dependent on the philosophy and coaching ethics used in the team.

Coaching Philosophy

The team’s head coach had an outstanding coaching philosophy that applied to the whole training program. According to the manager’s idea, he believed that knowledge and skills are transferable from one person to the other (Cahill, 2022). Based on this perspective, the frontrunner maintained that through effective coaching practices, using appropriate and reliable approaches each player has the potential to improve their talents in sports. Furthermore, the manager acknowledged that through playing games, there is strong character development and confidence which is essential for the growth of an individual. The key components of the philosophy included the objective, the technique used to coach players, and the principles applied.

Before commencing the training session, the coach used to come up with an already prepared objective that the team must aim towards. The trainer first communicates his purpose and expectations once the practice is over. To warrant that the training program is conducted effectively, the manager ensures the atmosphere is positive and accommodating for all the players and the support staff. The approach proved effective because each team member understood the primary reason for the coaching exercise, and thus they worked accordingly towards achieving them. For instance, when engaging in physical activities, the coach always alerted players before preparing them psychologically. The technique proved vital in developing the required attitude for participating in the game. Therefore, it was important to set a clear objective and make it known to the players to facilitate their concentration and commitment to professional development.

To have an effective coaching process, several principles must be applied to facilitate engagement. By definition, sports coaching is known as the training that focuses on individual improvement and that of the whole team members while considering both specific and general performances. Some key principles the rugby coach applies are an emphasis on behaviors, proper order during the training session, rapid correction and instructions, provision of immediate feedback, and use of questions and clarifications. While relying heavily on the stated values, the manager made it easier to handle any possible challenge that could occur to team members. Players as well adapted to the approach, which further simplified the process and created harmony and deep understanding amongst the trainees and the staff members.

Coaching Ethics

Sports attract the interest of individuals from different cultural backgrounds and have varied perspectives. To coordinate and maintain an effective team, coaching morals is a necessary tool. During my time with the school rugby team, the head coach was always applauded, following the respect he accorded the players and the supporting staff. The manager understood that people have different values and beliefs. Furthermore, he considered role differences, ethnicity, age, language, sexual orientation, origin, and socioeconomic status to ensure each player is not treated differently from the others based on attributes (Sabzi et al., 2022). The team reported no case of prejudice and immoral conduct portrayed by the head coach and the assistant. He valued the rights and dignity of all participants, which made the training environment welcoming and accommodating for the various players. In addition, the management set several rules that guide participants’ behaviors in and out of the training sessions. Most of the time, the team was encouraged to respect and uphold practices that embrace moral conduct. For instance, performers were frequently advised to take responsibility, remain fair and apply integrity in every situation they might encounter.

My Experience as a Sports Coach

I have been involved in coaching activities engaging people from different groups, ages, clubs, and gender. I have been exposed to the practice for a couple of years, leading to significant experience in the field. Currently, I am training girls below the age of 16 years to touch rugby and contact rugby as well. In addition, I am the chief instructor for Kids Outdoor Adventure Company, where I coach boys and girls between the ages of 6 to 12 years. Furthermore, I am a certified personal trainer and a CrossFit coach. The mentioned involvements have given me relevant encounters in coaching practices. Since I have been dealing with different individuals, I opted to use the long-term athlete development model as a tool to enhance the ability to improve specific and general improvements among the groups I train.

Long-Term Athlete Development

The long-term athlete development (LTAD) model is a framework created to enhance the quality of physical activity in sports and to allow the players to fully realize their potential and possible ways of exploring them effectively. Coaching is a dynamic program that requires the coach to constantly keep formulating and implementing new training methods that best suit the needs of the performers being trained (Costa et al., 2021). To ensure all my players in their respective groups attain their potential, I employed the LTAD approach to establish the required solution. By definition, LTAD is a properly planned and progressive system that assists in developing individual players. The tool is essential, especially for coaching juniors who are still undergoing various body developments. I used the LTAD to know what to do at any stage of performers’ advancement to enhance their engagement in healthy physical activities. It further provides solutions for handling the players with the talent and drives to succeed in games.

In general, LTAD aims to provide what seems best for the team throughout the training period. It promotes a positive experience for the participants, limiting possible shortcomings that might hinder the engagement of players in physical activities. I adopted the use of the LTAD model because it is applicable in all stages, right from childhood to adulthood. Being that I am dealing with teenagers and some adults, the system provides a proper approach to handling each group effectively. The LTAD framework has seven critical stages that give the coach a platform to guide the training, participation, and recovery process during the involvement (Costa et al., 2021). LTAD is useful since it recognizes involvement and performance-oriented tracks in sports. In addition, the model encompasses fun-based physical literacy necessary for teams aged between 6 to 12 years. The key phases that are making coaching practices include active start, fundamentals, learn to train, train to train, train to compete, training to win, and active for life.

Before applying the LTAD model, as a coach, I considered several factors to ensure that participation, training, and competition were successful. The aspects include physical literacy, specialization, trainability, age, emotional development, periodization, competition, system alignment, excellent task time, and continuous improvement. Each of the mentioned elements significantly benefits the participants and ensures they advance their specific and general physical, intellectual, and mental development.

Periodization Planning

When conducting training activities, I have depended on periodization planning to ensure I deliver the services on time. Since the coaching process entails different activities, it is important to structure and formulates the right period for each training exercise. In most cases, I break the coaching activities into components to be done in sessions, days, and weeks. The approach enables me to be situation specific whereby I bring the required training to enhance the necessary improvement in the team.

Goal Setting

Generally, the participants have different abilities and potentials in the team. To ensure all the performers are engaged and improve their professional development, I create objectives that cover process, performance, and outcome. This is because coaching is a sequential program geared towards unlocking the potential of each player in the team (Cronin et al., 2022). When making developing the goals, I ensure they are specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, and time-bound. The technique has made it easier to impart new skills to the participants in an effective manner.

Coaching Roles and Responsibilities

Coaching is an involving practice that comes with several responsibilities to be performed. Generally, team managers are responsible for planning, organizing, and providing different sports programs to enhance the physical fitness of the team members (Cho et al., 2021). Some of the key roles I play include teaching performers various relevant skills to enhance their abilities in rugby. Similarly, I train different tactics and techniques that players can use during competition. Apart from focusing on physical development, I frequently monitor and promote the overall performance by encouraging the individual participant and issuing positive feedback. In addition, I evaluate and identify the strengths and weaknesses of team members to plan for needed adjustments. Since health is a concern when it comes to sports, I advise the performers and their parents on ways to maintain a good lifestyle throughout their life. Other activities are creating appropriate training programs that suit the demands of players and other support staff.

Coaching Styles

As a coach, the most fundamental aspect of coaching is the style being used. When the approach is ineffective, the overall outcome of the involvement will be insignificant. It is necessary to apply the style that best tackles various cultures and behaviors that might prevent the development of each player (Samson & Bakinde, 2021). I have been using the democratic style to enhance the training of teams. The technique is aimed at making the athletes contribute to every aspect of the training program (Kim et al., 2021). Since I deal with people from different age groups, I usually apply the method to individuals aged 12 and above because they understand what is appropriate for them. The coaching technique enables performers to focus on the objectives outlined by the training program which is essential for their physical development.

Teaching Skills

Coaching a team focuses on skill development and each performer is required to gain the necessary abilities that improve their talents. I subject the players to six levels of training to enhance their competencies in sports. Initially, the player learns the relevant skill by engaging in the learning process (Newman et al., 2021). It is then followed by the aspect of skill mastery through a continuous repeat of the technique. The third phase encompasses adding speed to the already known skill to enhance faster execution. The next step is adding fatigue to enable the participants to understand the impact of tiredness on their accuracy and quality. The fifth stage involves adding pressure to make sure the player can apply their abilities when under pressure. The last level entails decision-making; the performer must be able to make the right decision fast during the execution process.

Coaching is an effective process that allows coaches to teach the players relevant skills to enhance their professional development. It is fundamental for the trainers to understand the needs of each performer before planning and structuring the required training programs. Coaching philosophies and the whole process is vital in ensuring the expected outcome is achieved. By applying the LTAD model, it is easier for the coach to provide proper training for the participants while considering various factors such as age, trainability, and physical literacy. In addition, the coaching style promotes the ability of trainees to execute the instructions. The democratic approach has proved player-centered thus making them remain active.

Band 9 essay about the huge salaries of sports people

by Manjusha Nambiar · November 1, 2016

Successful sports professionals can earn a great deal more money than people in other important professions. Some people think this is fully justified while others think it is unfair.

Discus both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reason for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience. Write at least 250 words.

Here is a sample essay

Compared to other professionals, sportsmen earn a lot more money. Some people believe that this is unfair; however, in my opinion, it is justified. I believe that a person’s salary should reflect the amount of money they can generate.

International sporting events attract a global audience and help generate a lot of money and jobs. These events are huge commercial successes. They also boost tourism. In fact, the city that hosts an international event like Olympics or World Cup Football gains international recognition. Its infrastructure gets a tremendous boost and thus its standard of living improves.

Success of major sporting events hinges upon the performance of internationally acclaimed sportsmen and women. Since their participation is crucial to the success of these events, I believe that their exorbitant salaries are justified. Of course, I admit the fact that a doctor or a teacher is more useful to the society than a swimmer or a sprinter. Still, people pursuing these professions earn much less money than sports people. In my opinion, this is a case of supply exceeding demand. There are plenty of doctors, engineers and advocates. By contrast, there aren’t many internationally acclaimed sports personalities. For example, there is only one Usain Bolt or Michael Phelps. Likewise, there is only one Serena Williams or Lionel Messi. Obviously, they earn a lot more than a doctor or an attorney. Actually, they earn a lot more than other less successful sports people.

To conclude, the amount of money that a sportsman or sportswoman earns is a direct reflection of their potential to generate money. Successful sportsmen not only earn money for themselves; they also help generate jobs and money. Therefore, I believe that their higher salaries are justified.

Apr 10, 2024; Augusta, Georgia, USA; Jon Rahm tees off on no. 1 during a practice round at Augusta

Power Rankings: These 10 Players Look Ready to Win the Masters

The 2024 Masters is here, and our model has identified the 10 players with the best chance to claim a green jacket. Here's the breakdown.

  • Author: Jim Stracka

Welcome to Power Rankings, a weekly feature on SI Golf from our partners at KeyCompete . This week the PGA Tour drops into San Antonio for the Valero Texas Open, the final stop before the Masters. Here’s how our model sees this week shaping up:

2024 Masters Preview

The azaleas are in bloom and our focus is on Augusta National for the 2024 Masters Tournament. Designed by the legendary Bobby Jones and Alister MacKenzie, ANGC has been a theater of dreams since its inception in 1933. Known for its immaculate condition, strategic layout and iconic features like Amen Corner, the course requires a combination of precision, power and creativity. Its undulating greens, perilously placed bunkers and ever-present threat of Rae’s Creek are a pure physical and mental test. Here are the 10 players our model likes this week.

KeyCompete’s 2024 Masters Power Rankings

1. Scottie Scheffler (+450) - The reigning king of consistency. No 1 in the World and playing like it at just the right time.

2. Jon Rahm (+1100) - The defending champion . Powerful game, fiery competitiveness won’t go out of style. Repeat win would not surprise.

3. Xander Schauffele (+1600) - Balanced game and mental toughness make him as a serious threat. Three top 10s in his last four visits. Still chasing elusive first major.

4. Brooks Koepka (+2500) - Unmatched major championship pedigree and a couple of previous close calls here. He’ll be ready.

5. Hideki Matsuyama (+2500) - A past champion, and his precise iron play and calm demeanor are dialed in. Won the Genesis in Febrary and hasn’t finished outside the top 12 since then.

6. Rory McIlroy (+1000) - The pursuit of the elusive Grand Slam continues . Recent form and refined short game signal this could be the year.

7. Will Zalatoris (+3500) - Still early in his comeback season from back surgery, but has looked strong so far. Consistency will be key to his success.

 8. Jordan Spieth (+2200) - Exceptional putting and course management could launch him right into the mix. Should be a thrill ride regardless.

9. Joaquin Niemann (+2500) - Unique blend of creativity, power, and finesse fits Augusta like a glove. Ready to step into the major-championship spotlight.

10. Sahith Theegala (+4500) - A rising star who seems to be building to something big. Fearless approach and adaptability make him a dark horse.

About Last Week

The 2024 Valero Texas Open will be remembered for the dramatic emergence of Akshay Bhatia and a playoff that ended in heartbreak for Denny McCarthy. The playoff was only one hole but it was theatrical, and Bhatia’s victory earned him an invitation to Augusta National for his first Masters.

KeyCompete had —dare we say—a masterful week, going 5-1 on our picks. Our yearly record is 62-45 heading into the first major of the year.

Kentucky hires Mark Pope: BYU coach, player on Wildcats' 1995-96 national title team succeeds John Calipari

Pope, who won a national title with the wildcats, is a high-energy coach who spent the past nine years at utah valley and brigham young.

mark-pope.jpg

Kentucky has hired BYU coach Mark Pope to become its next men's basketball coach, the school announced Friday. Pope and Kentucky quickly engaged on Thursday in the hours after Baylor's Scott Drew and UConn's Dan Hurley both turned down Kentucky's overtures.

Pope was offered a five-year deal at an average of $5.5 million per season, before incentives, sources said. Pope replaces John Calipari, who on Tuesday officially left for Arkansas after 15 years in Lexington.

Welcome home, @CoachMarkPope ! Pope, a captain of the 1996 National Championship team, has returned to the @universityofky as the 23rd head coach of @KentuckyMBB ! https://t.co/5tDLhxKdTQ — Kentucky Athletics (@UKAthletics) April 12, 2024

The pick was not the obvious or expected one on account of Kentucky's historical standing in the sport.

Pope is a Kentucky alumnus, however. He played on the famed 1995-96 championship team and has long coveted an opportunity to one day return to his alma mater. He has nine years of head coaching experience in D-I: four at Utah Valley, the past five at BYU. His career record is 187-108, with a 110-52 mark at BYU. Pope is 0-2 all time in the NCAA Tournament. He guided the Cougars to a No. 6 seed in this year's NCAA Tournament but fell in the first round to Duquesne.

Pope won out over other hot names, including Billy Donovan and Rick Pitino. Sources told CBS Sports that, despite Pitino and Donovan being buzzy names attached to Kentucky as potential candidates, neither were aggressively pursued by UK athletic director Mitch Barnhart. The event that opened the door all the way for Pope was when Hurley definitively signaled he wasn't an option.  The 51-year-old Pope is a high-energy hire who had the backing and support of some former players, in addition to being Barnhart's favored choice in his secondary candidate list. Pope runs a fun system on the floor; his BYU teams finished top-20 at KenPom in three of his five seasons there. He overhauled his roster strategy and offensive philosophy this past season as well, which led to 23 wins and a top-15 offense in college basketball.

Pope would join Joe B. Hall as the only men's basketball coaches — dating back to Hall of Famer Adolph Rupp in 1930 — to play for Kentucky and go on to coach the program. For Pope, it's a true dream job situation. An official announcement is expected Friday, once Barnhart signs off on the contract.

Pro comparisons for the top 8 nhl prospects at the 2024 frozen four.

essay about sport player

Editor's note: This article was originally published on Bleacher Report and was adapted for NCAA.com

The NCAA men's Frozen Four gets underway on Thursday and with it comes a load of talent to watch among all four teams.

With Boston College taking on Michigan and Boston University facing Denver, we want to familiarize you with some of the notable college players who will be on display by comparing them as best as we can to current NHL players.

The fun part about making comparisons is that it's something almost every scout hates doing. It sets unreasonable and often unrealistic expectations for those players, and these things often have a way of coming back to make talent evaluators look a little foolish.

So, we're going to take a crack at it, because you can't hurt us with our own words and we're not paid to be scouts. But when you watch enough games and video of the players, certain players come to mind immediately as to who they remind you of.

That's pretty much our methodology here.

Cutter Gauthier as Alex Tuch

Maybe it's because Cutter Gauthier plays for Boston College and is a power forward with a lot of skill to go with his size that made us think of Alex Tuch. After all, the Buffalo Sabres star is a former Eagle and a power forward with size and skill.

Or maybe it's because Gauthier plays in such a similar way, you'd think Boston College only wants to have players built like that to load up its roster.

However, when you watch how the 20-year-old handles himself in open space and around the net with the kind of hands and shot we've seen Tuch use to light it up in Vegas and Buffalo, it's hard not to picture the two being similar.

Cutter Gauthier, Boston College hockey

Gauthier is the leading goal scorer in college hockey because he's able to use all of those gifts to make life miserable for opposing teams and that he's a Hobey Baker Award finalist is no surprise, either.

Anaheim Ducks fans will be relishing the idea of Gauthier lining up alongside Leo Carlsson and Trevor Zegras down the line.

Macklin Celebrini as Mitch Marner

Macklin Celebrini, Boston University hockey

The easiest way to describe Macklin Celebrini is to take a look down the list of past no-doubt No. 1 picks in the NHL draft and select the one he's most like. After all, he will be the No. 1 pick in June and his abilities are off the charts.

Consider he's 17 years old and tied for second in the country in scoring. He's having the best freshman season in college hockey since Jack Eichel in 2015 and Paul Kariya in 1993. That is esteemed company in college hockey and the hype he's been getting is very real.

But is he like Connor Bedard? Sort of. Their size is similar, but their skills are different.

Is he like Connor McDavid? No, because no one is.

Sidney Crosby? Well, kind of. Like Crosby, Celebrini is an avowed perfectionist and will do whatever he can to round out any of his weaknesses.

But Celebrini's abilities, size, speed, shot and passing ability remind us of Toronto's Mitch Marner. Watching him in open space causes opposing teams to freeze. He can beat them with his shot, moves or a pass to an open teammate.

While Marner gets lost in the spotlight on Auston Matthews, just think of what it'll be like if Chicago wins the lottery again and lands Celebrini to play with Bedard.

Will Smith as Leon Draisaitl

Although the San Jose Sharks' season couldn't be going worse, their biggest highlight of the year is seeing how great Will Smith has been at Boston College.

Will Smith, Boston College hockey

Smith is the leading scorer in college hockey and his ability to score goals himself or set up his array of top NHL prospect teammates has allowed him to show off everything he can do. Gosh, that sounds like a familiar set of abilities...just like Leon Draisaitl.

Draisaitl is an immensely talented player capable of scoring himself or feeding pucks to Connor McDavid or Zach Hyman or Evander Kane or...well, you get the idea.

Smith isn't as big as Draisaitl, but he plays the game with the same kind of fervor and tenacity. Giving him room to create is a bad idea for opposing teams and giving him room to uncork his outstanding shot is also not great for keeping Boston College off the board.

The Sharks can only hope Smith turns out to be the same kind of caliber as Draisaitl, but the Eagles are targeting a national championship with him first.

🏒 LIVE UPDATES: 2024 DI men's ice hockey championship

Rutger McGroarty as Robert Thomas

Watching Rutger McGroarty play a solid all-around game and provide the kind of offense that helps to uplift his Michigan teammates means he could be a reasonable comparison for several NHL players.

When you watch him play and take his size into account, though, comparing him to Blues forward Robert Thomas makes a lot of sense.

At 6'1" and 200 pounds, McGroarty has good size for the college game and is able to use that to his benefit to hang onto pucks and drive the offense. This is something Thomas has been able to do in St. Louis and has helped him set up teammates like Jordan Kyrou.

Rutger McGroarty, Michigan hockey

Every great team needs a leader who is capable of playing unselfish hockey, and McGroarty has been that for Michigan.

When he winds up in Winnipeg, he'll have more Wolverines flavor alongside Kyle Connor.

Jack Devine as Jake Guentzel

Even though Denver's Jack Devine doesn't always generate a ton of attention nationally, sleeping on him is a bad idea.

Jack Devine, Denver hockey

While Denver doesn't come with the same kind of history and hype the other teams in the 2024 Frozen Four do, Devine is helping change that conversation by being a forward capable of pressuring the puck all over the ice and forcing the issue in the offensive zone.

What makes Devine rather like Jake Guentzel is how ever-present he is around the net. Whether he's driving to the goal with or without the puck, Devine forces defenders to deal with him. And the way he's able to always get around the net has paid off handsomely for him and the Pioneers this year.

Like Guentzel, Devine is a relentless worker whose efforts sometimes overshadow his superb skill set. He never stops moving and attacking the puck. If he turns into a good professional player, the Panthers will be even richer up front.

Ryan Leonard as Gabriel Landeskog

Finding the right comparable for Ryan Leonard is difficult.

He doesn't have the kind of size his teammate Cutter Gauthier has, but he plays the game physically with skill. He has no fear of getting into dirty areas or in board battles, and he's more than capable of scoring goals and being a threat on the power play (his 13 power-play goals are tied for most in the country).

Although we've haven't seen Colorado's Gabriel Landeskog play for some time, that kind of descriptive profile seems to match up with him.

While Landeskog eventually became a stronger and weightier player to help him play more physically, expect Leonard to do the same when it's time for him to take the jump into pro hockey. That he's had a ton of success already at Boston College at 6'0", 192 pounds and plays that kind of hockey tells us that when it's time for him to graduate, he'll be ready.

Ryan Leonard, Boston College

His 31 goals and 36 penalty minutes in 39 games makes him one of the most penalized players among the top scorers in the country. Playing big always gets the officials' attention and Leonard's play will get everyone's attention regardless.

The Washington Capitals will be overjoyed when he's able to join them.

Gavin Brindley as Johnny Gaudreau

Gavin Brindley, Michigan hockey

This comparison is perhaps a bit unfair, but when there are so few offensively dynamic players in the NHL under six-feet tall, it really cuts down the field of choices.

For Michigan's Gavin Brindley at 5'9" 170 pounds, most NHL comparable players are retired by now, but one who isn't and also played college hockey is Johnny Gaudreau.

Like Gaudreau, Brindley is capable of piling up goals while flying up the wings and using his smaller size to get into tougher areas around the net.

His speed and skill help give Michigan a dynamic weapon to score against opponents and while his size may fool some into thinking he can't withstand tougher defenses, that's usually a good way to ensure he can beat you.

That we're comparing Brindley to Gaudreau, and that Columbus drafted Brindley is not just a cheeky play by us. When you see how he attacks the game and feeds off his teammates, the comparison makes a lot of sense.

Zeev Buium as Luke Hughes

Being a young, puck-moving defenseman who piles up points in college hockey is inevitably going to draw comparisons to a small handful of players.

A year ago, we compared Boston University's  Lane Hutson to Quinn Hughes , and Denver's Zeev Buium reminds us a bit of Quinn's brother, Luke, this year.

Buium is tied with Hutson as the highest-scoring defenseman in the nation, but the key difference here is Buium is a freshman and just turned 18 in December. Watching how he handles the puck up and down the ice as well as how he manages it at the blue line within the attacking zone shows his intuition for the position is sky-high.

Zeev Buium, Denver hockey

With 49 points including 11 goals, Buium's ability to seamlessly jump into college hockey and play at an elite level all before he's even been drafted by an NHL team compares to the hype Luke Hughes had going into his first season at Michigan.

Although Hughes had hype built in thanks to older brothers Quinn and Jack, Buium has been able to make a name for himself even with his older brother (and teammate) Sha—a 2021 second-round pick of Detroit—holding it down.

Watching Buium have the season he's having at his age and playing on defense highlights why he'll be a top pick in the draft this season.
