  • 5 years of experience selling content services to clients 
  • Responsible for the increase of customers by 20 percent annually over the last three years 
  • Extensive knowledge of lead generation and sales cycles

6. Next, state when you’ll be visiting the area

Reiterate how your contributions will be valuable to the organization and show your interest in speaking with them directly in addition to the next time you’re in the area.

I would like to speak with you further about this opportunity, and how I can be in service to the organization. 7. Finally, finish your cover letter and conclude with a salutation and your name

Complete the cover letter with a short conclusion, along with a salutation and your name. You can use the conclusion to show your willingness to move to the city where the job is located to demonstrate your commitment. 

‘As I plan to relocate to Orlando, I am prepared to cover any relocation costs.

Don't make this common mistake

Many job seekers make the mistake of listing the city they're relocating to as a current location on their resumes or LinkedIn profiles, and only bring up intentions to relocate when it comes time for the interview. This scramble makes you look unprofessional and dishonest – not a good impression to make on prospective employers!

Instead, if you're planning to relocate later and to a certain target location, you should mention that on the top of your resume with your contact information.

During the coronavirus pandemic, there was a huge shift toward remote work and working from home. In this day and age, when globalization is at the forefront of many organizations, relocating for work is not as uncommon as it once was.

A survey conducted by Allied Vans found that 49% of interviewees moved because of job advancement or money, and 40% of those were aged 25–34.

Whether the reason behind your relocation is personal or professional, communicating this in your job application is a necessity.

This article will look at how to write a relocation cover letter to help you secure that job you always wanted.

A relocation cover letter follows the same structure as a regular cover letter . However, your intention to move is communicated in one of the opening paragraphs.

An employer may show bias if they see you are currently in a different part of the country or world.

On average, recruiters spend around seven seconds looking at resumes and cover letters. They use that short space of time to pick out keywords reflected in the job description.

A simple explanation of your current situation and willingness to relocate reassures the recruiter that this is a serious application.

While you will still use your cover letter to detail any relevant skills and experience, you should also consider the following in your relocation cover letter:

Your current address – Lying or tricking your potential employer is not a great start to a professional relationship. Be honest about where you are currently living. You don't want to find yourself in a situation where you have to turn down an interview because you can't get there in time.

Use the second or third paragraph to detail your move – Again, be honest. Are you moving to be closer to family, because of your partner's work, because you always wanted to move there, or because it is your dream role? You should also let your potential employer know what stage of the move you are at; are you planning or is it happening?

Use key phrases – Using phrases like ‘a permanent relocation’ tells your potential employer that this is a long-term move and you are a reliable candidate. Back it up with reasons why the move is permanent, such as better job security or improved lifestyle in that city.

Emphasize that the opportunity coincides with you relocating – No employer wants to choose the wrong employee. Depending on the reasons for your move, they may have reservations about employing you. Confirming that your move will be completed before the intended start date will remove some doubt surrounding your recruitment. If your move is dependent on you getting the role, emphasize that you have no contracts or ties and can relocate at a moment's notice.

State you are willing to relocate at your own cost – Each corporate job role receives on average 250 applications . A majority of those will already be based in the area, so there is no incentive for the employer to fund your move. By stating that you are financing the move yourself, you save the employer from having an awkward conversation about money. Generally speaking, relocations are only sponsored when you are headhunted or when your employer wants you to relocate.

State you are available for in-person and remote interviews – Explain that you will be in the area during the interview phase or that you will be there during a certain time frame should they want to interview. Mention that if the company wants to interview you sooner, you are available for a virtual interview and a follow-up in-person meeting at a later date, should they wish.

How Do You Write a Cover Letter for Relocation?

Paragraph 1 – introduction.

Your introduction will include the position you are applying for and why you are a perfect match for the role.

I am very excited to be applying for the role of legal secretary based in Atlanta. I believe I am a perfect fit for the position. I have a proven history of managing multiple high-profile schedules and I look forward to repeating the same success in this city.

Paragraph 2 – Introduction Expansion

In this paragraph, expand on your relocation plans and what interests you about the company.

Having worked as a legal secretary for three years, I have always admired the work your legal firm does, as well as its integrity and values. The way you conduct yourselves is something I continually strive to do. I believe that Atlanta also holds these same values, which is why I had always planned to relocate there permanently, should the right job opportunity present itself.

Paragraph 3 – Most Relevant Experience

For this section, you need to highlight your most relevant experience and how this is a benefit to the company.

Use the job description to identify the tasks and experience they are looking for.

As a legal secretary, no two days are the same. I feel confident in saying that I am adaptable and have exceptional multitasking skills. At my current position, I manage the affairs of two of our CEOs. For three years, I have never mixed up or missed an appointment, flight or reservation. I believe this is because of the system I created and implemented, which allowed my bosses to conduct their professional affairs seamlessly and resulted in budget savings of 16%, 19% and 15% respectively.

Paragraph 4 – Second Most Relevant Experience

Using the same format as the previous paragraph, this section should detail another skill set mentioned in the job description.

The job description mentioned that one of my primary roles would be to arrange travel. This is also my primary function at my current company. As such, I have developed a relationship with travel agents, hotel managers and concierge services. I am proud to say that last year I reduced travel costs by 11% through these relationships.

Paragraph 5 – Availability

Use this section to mention when you are available for interviews .

Give your potential employer options:

  • Are you available for telephone and virtual interviews?
  • Will you be in that location at any point?
  • Are you able to travel to that location on short notice?
Should you wish to discuss my resume further, I am available at any time for a telephone or virtual interview. Should you prefer an in-person interview, I shall be in Atlanta for eight days from March 4th.

Paragraph 6 – Conclusion and Call to Action

Use this section to summarize why you are a good fit for that company and encourage them to take action.

If the move is currently happening, reassure potential employees of the timeline and the permanency of the move.

If your relocation is dependent on a job offer, then communicate that information. Make it clear that, should you be successful, you will commit to the move.

When you’re planning on relocating to a new area and you need to find a job in a different city , it’s important to be careful how you handle all that information in your cover letter. Hiring managers often look for people in the immediate vicinity, and you don’t want to miss an opportunity just because you currently live outside of their area . Read on to learn how to mention relocation when you write a cover letter.

If you’re applying for a senior position or a job with a shortage of qualified candidates, you have a good chance of being considered for a job even though you currently live in a different location. However, if you’re applying for a low or mid-level position where there may be many qualified applicants who already live in the area, you can risk being screened out if you submit documents with an out-of-town address.

Employers will be more likely to consider someone who is already going to be in the area, so they don't have to deal with the logistics and expense of moving a new hire.

You need to phrase your cover letter correctly, so you can get your application considered by prospective employers, even if you currently live outside of their region. 

First of all, keep the focus on your  qualifications for the job  rather than on where you live. Secondly, make it very clear that you are planning a move to the new location.

Finally – if your budget allows – you can mention that you are more than happy to travel, at  your own cost , to their campus or office for a personal interview and that you also plan to be responsible for your own moving expenses.

Should You List Your Address on Your Resume and Cover Letter?

You will find career counselors who advise omitting your physical address on your resume and cover letter entirely, because this may lessen your chances of consideration and because of potential identity theft. However, many hiring managers will still perceive such an omission as a “red flag,” wondering why you have omitted your address even as they note that the latest job mentioned on your resume is located 1,000 miles away from them. Until omitting physical addresses on professional resumes becomes commonplace, it’s probably best to be upfront and explain your current address and relocation plans.

How to Mention Relocation in Your Cover Letter

You’ll typically benefit the most by addressing the fact that you’re moving upfront. This will make it clear that you’re not applying just as a way to get to the new location. After all, your main rationale for applying for any job should be the nature of the work, followed by the appeal of the organization.

You can either mention the fact that you are moving at the beginning of the cover letter or closer to the end. But either way, a statement that addresses your interest in the job itself should precede any reference to the fact that you're relocating.

Perhaps the best way, however, to address relocation is to incorporate a statement in a final paragraph which mentions traveling to the area. This a) allows you to focus on the job and your qualifications themselves at the beginning of the letter; and b) gives you more time to make it clear that the employer wouldn't be responsible for your travel costs, moving costs , or any other expenses.

As mentioned above, organizations usually expect to fund travel and bring in candidates from outside locations to interview for senior and hard-to-fill positions. However, for more entry-level jobs there may be a preference for local candidates. 

Dear Mr. Smith,

I would welcome the opportunity to meet with you to discuss this position. I will be traveling to Seattle for a conference  (or to find an apartment or to network with local college alumni)  in two weeks and would be available to meet at that time. However, I would also be glad to travel, at my own expense, for an interview at your convenience. If you're willing to relocate internationally for a job, how should you include that in your CV? Well, there are several ways that you can state on your CV that you're willing to work anywhere in the world, but some methods allow you to be more concise, and therefore more professional.

You might like to phrase it as 'will relocate globally', 'willing to relocate worldwide' or 'open to relocation on a global level', for example. 

Where do I write that I'm willing to relocate on my CV?

The best place to mention relocation on your CV is your personal statement, which sits just underneath your name and contact details. Your CV personal statement should discuss who you are, what you can bring to the role and your career goals. Add the details about being willing to relocate globally to the final part of your statement. 

For example, if you're looking for a software engineer role, you might write, 'Currently pursuing a software engineer role and am open to relocating globally'. 

Have a goal and a plan for your relocation

Food for thought: Perhaps spend some time thinking about where you really want to work on a geographical level. If you have your heart set on a certain country, perhaps look for jobs in that region, rather than hoping a new employer will send you there on a whim.

Alternatively, if you want the opportunity to work across the world, look at companies who have offices internationally. Understand the CV conventions for different countries

1. What do I call it?

The UK and most European countries refer to this job-application document as a 'CV', which is an abbreviation for the Latin term 'curriculum vitae', meaning 'course of (one's) life'. In contrast, you'll typically find companies asking for a 'resume' in the U.S, Australia, Germany and Asian countries, including China, Singapore and Japan.

In the U.S, you may see the term 'CV' attached to an academic CV (also known as an academic resume), which is used in the worlds of science and academia. Academic CVs are typically much longer documents that offer a deep dive into a candidate's education, work experience, appointments and publications. They should not be confused with the British and European CV.

2. Page length

Length conventions tend not to vary by country – most CVs around the world are typically kept at one or two pages. This generally breaks down to one page for entry-level positions and two pages for most professionals; a three-page CV format is uncommon and reserved for senior executives with extensive experience. The only exceptions are if you work in academia or a scientific field where you would use the aforementioned academic CV format, or if you are applying for a position within the U.S. federal government, which has specific requirements that often require more than three pages.

One minor thing to note, however, is that while page length conventions are not different, the page size is. In the U.S. and Canada, letter size is used, whereas the UK and most other countries use A4 paper. 

3. Personal information

In the UK, U.S. and Australia, the personal information you include will generally be limited to your town and postal code (or city and state), phone number, email and the link to your LinkedIn profile. Employers see the incorporation of more specific details as a potential opportunity for HR managers to discriminate ‒ whether implicitly or explicitly ‒ between certain candidates.

But for EU countries, including personal details is often expected. These may include your age, nationality, birth date, maiden name and often marital status.

4. CV photo

You'll generally find that including a photo on your CV is discouraged in the UK, Africa, Israel, India, Australia, Canada, Mexico and the U.S. Like some personal information, headshots can be seen as an opportunity for HR managers to discriminate between candidates. Actors and entertainers in these countries may include a separate photo with their CVs in these countries, but doing so outside of these professions is discouraged. 

However, there are some countries where including a photograph on your CV is expected. These areas include: 

EU member countries

Latin America (except Mexico)

Southeast Asia (e.g. Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, the Philippines)

Middle East (particularly in the UAE) 

If you're applying to work in any of these countries, your image should be a passport-size colour photo of yourself in business attire on hand. You want a photo that is high resolution, preferably taken by a professional photographer ‒ selfies won't make the cut. Select a recent photo and make sure it's a clear headshot, as employers do not look favourably on group photos. 

5. Personal statement

Most countries expect the inclusion of a personal statement on a CV. This is a short paragraph at the head of the first page that gives an employer a summary of your career accomplishments and objectives. 6. Language skills

Multilingual skills are valuable in any workplace, especially when applying for jobs in countries that have multiple official languages. Therefore, it's crucial to include your language abilities on your CV if you have them.

In addition, if you're applying for jobs in a country where the language spoken is not your native language, it's important to provide a clear, accurate assessment of your abilities, unless the job description clearly states that language skills will not be needed. Also, even if you're applying for jobs in countries where the lingua franca is English, make sure to note differences between spelling conventions in the UK, U.S, Australia, Canada and other English-speaking countries.

Write a concise introduction that conveys your enthusiasm

All cover letters should begin with your interest in the open position and why you are applying for the role. For example, if you're applying for a project management position, have you always been fond of organisation and executing projects and campaigns? Or, perhaps you have always wanted to work for this particular company and have admired it from afar your whole career.

Detail your reasons for relocating and what your plan looks like

In your relocation cover letter, the next section should highlight the fact that you are moving and why this is. If your reasons are convincing, your cover letter will be all the more persuasive.

Some genuine reasons include: Your spouse is moving jobs, you are moving to be closer to elderly parents or you are returning to your hometown after a few years in the city. 

Be careful of your phrasing when offering your explanation. For example, if you are moving to London because you have always wanted to, this is great, but a prospective employer may read this as 'could be a flight risk if London living doesn't work out'. However, if you plan to move to London permanently because you know it is a hotspot for jobs in your industry and have witnessed many friends find success in this decision, that's better.

In a couple of sentences then, detail your reason for relocating, your thought-out plan, the relocation's permanence and your ties to the area to convince the employer you're a risk worth taking on. If you can mention a timeframe or the exact date of your move, that will work in your favour.

Add examples of your relevant experience

The following paragraph should address why this position is important to you and the relevant experience you have to offer. Identify the critical requirements listed in the job advert and detail the experience that shows you align with the role. Make the outcomes and achievements of your experience a key focus too, as it will highlight the concrete value you bring to the table.

Emphasise key skills and qualifications

In this section, outline any additional skills and qualifications that the prospective employer deems valuable for this role. Again, refer to the job description and cite the most pertinent abilities in your skill set which mirror the role's requirements. You are essentially offering the HR manager plenty of reasons to invite you for an interview by proving that your arsenal of skills is exactly what they are looking for.

Finish your cover letter with a summary

End your cover letter with a conclusion that summarises your expertise, reasons for relocation and your enthusiasm for the role. Write that you're looking forward to meeting with them to discuss the exciting opportunity and your skills in more detail. Then sign off with 'Kind regards' (or something similar) and your name.

A Persuasive Relocation Cover Letter Example

How do you approach the idea of relocation with potential employers? It is a challenging subject to be certain. For one thing, covering relocation expenses does increase the cost of hiring an employee. Further, there’s risk a potential employee is making if the desire to relocate to a new area is  a rash decision. This could lead to quick turnover.

All of these factors can make it difficult to convince a potential employer that you are a great candidate for relocation. How to Mention Relocation in a Cover Letter?

You have two options to mention relocation in a cover letter:

  • In the opening paragraph — works better if you upload a formal cover letter with your address in the letterhead
  • At the end of your letter — a better option for email cover letters and less formal submissions. 

In either case, don’t make relocation the focal point of your letter. That prime spot is reserved for your interest in the positions and competitive skills. 

Here’s how to mention relocation at the beginning of your cover letter:

“In 2018, I first learned about your company’s mission of improving diversity at the Anual Marketing Award and was very impressed with your campaign results (belated congrats on the 2nd place). At my current position with Civil Corps, I was in charge of promoting the company’s D&I program too and managed to negotiate coverage in VOX, Techcrunch, and CBNC. I believe I could achieve the same results for your company too. I’m in the process of relocating to Denver, I was very excited to learn that Maxwell Corps is looking for a new PR manager.” 

And here’s another sample for highlighting relocation at the end of your cover letter:

“I’d be eager to provide more context of my achievements during the interview. Would you like me to share my calendar so that we could schedule a Zoom interview? I’m relocating to Denver in a month and would appreciate the opportunity to do a remote interview. However, I’m also open to traveling for an on-site interview if that works better for you. Thank you again for your consideration.” 

How to Write a Relocation Cover Letter

Similar to other types of cover letters, a relocation letter should have the same standard structure: opening paragraph, main body, and concluding paragraph. 

However, to make your cover letter for relocation more compelling, try this:

  • Open with a lead on your qualifications 
  • Highlight your interest and enthusiasm for the position 
  • Discuss your most relevant skills in the body of the letter
  • Show your passion and commitment for a new location
  • Be forthcoming about your current location and decision to relocate
  • Don’t overexplain — instead talk about your flexibility with interviewing

Lead With Your Qualifications – End With Your Relocation

You should definitely disclose that you will be relocating. What you shouldn’t do is lead with that information. Instead, cover your aptitude, talents, and qualifications. Describe why you are a good fit, and how interested you are in the announced opportunity. 

As you close your cover letter, mention that you will be relocating if you are offered the position. Or suggest that you could start working remotely and then relocate. If you’ve written the rest of your cover letter successfully, the hiring manager may very well be eager to move forward with the application process.

Show a Strong Interest in The Position Along With Relevant Skills

Your best chance at landing a job in another place is by proving that you are so qualified that you are worth any relocation expenses. That’s why you must indicate that you understand the position, have researched the company, and can show how your skills make you the ultimate candidate for the job at hand.

Don’t Over Explain or Apologize

It is perfectly acceptable to apply for jobs in other locations. You should be honest and clear about this, but avoid going into needless detail as you attempt to explain or apologize for your employment requirements. Don’t spend more than a line or two mentioning the relocation. Avoid using words like ‘sorry’ or ‘apologize’ when you bring up this subject.

You should also avoid revealing any personal information that might make things uncomfortable. For example, avoid disclosing that you are relocating due to a divorce.

Don’t Obscure Your Current Location

Some people believe that you shouldn’t share where you are currently located. This is generally not the best advice to follow. 

Because it is standard to include contact information on your resume and cover letter, leaving it off can definitely arouse suspicion. Avoid creating any red flags, and include your contact information like you normally would. You also don’t want to make it seem as if you were hiding information or being misleading.

Show Your Passion and Commitment to The New Location

If the hiring manager believes that you have some connection to or passion for their location, they will be more likely to believe you are a viable candidate. Learn about the community in which you plan to work. Mention in the cover letter that you are excited about the possibility to relocate. Share what it is that makes you excited about the possibility of moving.

I’ve reviewed the requirements for the job, and believe that I would be a perfect fit.

I am currently employed as a fisheries research technician for the state of Michigan. My work is primarily in the upper peninsula. The duties include taking and testing water samples from rivers and other waterways, observing and recording behaviors of fish and other vertebrate and invertebrate animals living in and around the water, capturing and tagging fish using various methods, and ensuring that all wildlife is handled humanely. I also record and organize all data for submission to the University of Michigan.

As I understand, my duties would essentially be the same with some additional supervisory responsibilities. I am confident I can take those on, as I have led several internship programs over the past three years.

Should You Put Relocation on a Resume Too?

Yes, it’s better to be forthcoming about your relocation plans. Hiring managers will appreciate a heads-up on your current location and will try to accommodate the interview process accordingly. The best way to mention relocation on a resume is the header area. Add a quick line to your resume tagline or summary. This way every reader of your resume (and there may be several!) will immediately understand your situation and weigh on the decision to call you in. 

What is a Fair Relocation Package?

A standard employer relocation package covers some of the costs of moving for the candidate. However, the exact package “content” differs a lot depending on the industry, position, and other benefits offered. Typically, employers either issue a cash allowance for relocation or offer other monetary perks such as temporary housing, pre-paid storage units, assistance with hiring a moving company, or travel costs reimbursement. Some international companies such as Google, Microsoft, and IBM among others also provide assistance for family members and cover a wider range of relocation costs. If the employer advertises a relocation package, ask them directly about what’s included.

How Do You Negotiate a Better Relocation Package?

Before you enter relocation package negotiation do an honest assessment of your needs. How much financial costs will you incur? Will you need to break an expensive lease or sell a property? Are you moving to a more competitive housing market where apartment search can take a while? Jot down your basic list of needs. Then approach HR and ask them to provide an overview of what their organization could cover. 

If some costs don’t overlap, but other perks are provided, think about how you feel about compromising. If the package clearly doesn’t cover enough, prepare your case. Appeal to the fact that the hassle of relocation (and searching for an apartment for instance) can delay your start date or make you less productive during the onboarding period. Share some of your ideas about how the employer’s assistance could help you get settled in the new role faster and start generating value for the business. Most will agree to meet you at least halfway (as long as your demands are adequate).

Writing a Cover Letter That Stands Out for international jobs

Now that you have perfected your CV , you are ready to dive into your cover letter! This document works as a complement to your CV and will help you stand out even more in the pile of job seekers. It is also a way for you to naturally include your skills and accomplishments while telling the recruiter or hiring manager some more details about you as a person. 

Not every job ad requires you to add a cover letter but, in some cases, the company you are applying to might want you to include it. This letter should not tell your life story or describe your hobbies but should describe your professional career and highlight why you want the position you are applying for, and why you think you would be the right fit for it.

Tailor the cover letter for the job you are applying for

Just like with your CV, you want your cover letter to be unique to every job you apply for! Even if it is tempting to re-use an old version of the letter, you should tailor it for every new position. This will be a bit more time-consuming, but since it will be personalized for the company, it can make a considerable difference in the end. 

In the letter, we recommend avoiding generic sentences like “Dear sir/madam, I am excited to apply for this role". This does not show the recruiter that you are interested in that specific role. Do some extra research on who will read the cover letter and address it specifically to that person. For example: “Dear Janet Andersen, I saw that you are looking for a new customer support agent at Number One Gaming, and I am very interested in the role ”. 

What to include in a cover letter

Since most recruiters will probably only skim it, your cover letter doesn’t have to be longer than half a page. Having about three paragraphs is enough if you use them wisely. As mentioned before, this document should focus on your character, personality, and what accomplishments you have made in your career. Bring up previous jobs or internships that are relatable to the position you want, and mention qualifications, diplomas, or volunteer work that strengthens you as a valid candidate. 

You can search and download a template if you are unsure about the structure or design of your cover letter. However, make sure you personalize it and make it your own. 

1. Start strong

The first paragraph of your cover letter needs to grab the attention of the recruiter straight away. In other words, it has to be captivating, inviting them to read more. Try to think outside of the box . Instead of the classic “Hello, I want to apply for this job” try something like; “I have always loved problem-solving, and if I may say so myself I am immaculate at it. In fact, that is why I was attracted to a job within customer service in the first place”. 

After a strong opening, continue to explain why you are writing this letter. For example, you found the available position, and you were immediately intrigued. Then, give a clear motivation as to why you believe you would be an excellent fit for the role. Highlight the skills and qualities that you have and that you think the company needs. Since you have probably already done this in your CV, this is your chance to explain it more thoroughly. 

2. Why this job?

The most important part of your cover letter is to include why you are applying for that job . The company wants to know why you are passionate about what they do and how you could fit in their team. Research about the company to find out more about their mission, vision, and goals. You may relate to how their story or how they came up with that business idea, or you feel like the direction they are taking the business is in line with your plans for your career. This part has to be genuine and personal so that the employer can tell that you are interested in their company and what it represents. 

Something else that is important to do is to add some of the key terms and phrases that are used in the description of the job ad. If the company is looking for someone efficient, social, and a fast learner - you should include all of these words somewhere in your cover letter when you describe yourself or your skills. 

You can also add a sentence or two to explain why you want to work in the country where the job is. Maybe because you know the language, or it has always been your dream to live and work there. Explain that you are open to new adventures and that moving to another country is not a problem for you. 

3. Finish it with a thank you 

Finally, you want to add a closing paragraph with a final sales pitch and a summary explaining why you are genuinely interested in the role and that you would be happy to discuss it further in an interview . 

At the very end, thank the employer for taking the time to read your CV and cover letter and mention you look forward to hearing from them.

Quick tips for your cover letter

  • Format and presentation - your cover letter should be neat and tidy, use the same font as in your CV and make sure it’s uncluttered and has all the proper paragraphs. 
  • Check for grammar or spelling mistakes - it’s easy to miss even the most obvious mistakes when you’ve stared at the same document for a while, so make sure someone else reads your cover letter before you send it out. 
  • Use examples - Add your portfolio - if you have examples of previous work you have done, you can add them here to back up your claims. 
  • If you feel stuck - sometimes it might be hard to know what words or phrases you should use to describe yourself, and you might feel like it comes off as bragging. A tip is to ask a colleague to give you some examples - how would they describe you and sing your praises?  

What to avoid in your cover letter

Just as in your CV, there are some elements that you should avoid when it comes to your cover letter. Here are some examples: 

Giving too much praise - You should not focus only on how good that company is and how well they do. Find areas of improvement and tell them how you can help. For example, it might be the case that the company is not so strong on social media. Then you could mention how you increased your current company’s visibility on Facebook or Instagram. 

Don’t add all your education - If you don’t have any work experience yet, you might think you need to add all your previous education to your cover letter. However, you should instead focus on your achievements and add your most recent educational accomplishments. Think of skills you learned from your education and find a way to connect them to the required skills for the role. 

Being too formal or too enthusiastic - The tone of voice in your cover letter is relevant, but sometimes it can be tricky to know which one is better to use. However, even if you want to sound professional, you should avoid being overly formal in your letter. You want to come across as likable and approachable and not sound like a robot. On the other side of the spectrum, you should also avoid being too enthusiastic or informal.

If you don’t have any work experience yet 

Many candidates feel like they have to include an apology or an explanation for not having work experience. A sentence like “Although I only have limited experience in this field, I am excited to learn more” is a great way to explain that you don’t meet all the requirements yet, but you are willing to make up for it !

In other words, it is about focusing on your strengths rather than your weaknesses! Maybe you have studied abroad and can bring this up. For example, you can phrase it differently; “I know already what it is to move and live abroad, and I am ready to take the next step in my career”. If you make it to the interview stage and get asked about the previous experiences, you can elaborate your answer based on this point and be honest about how you plan to translate the skills you have for the position. 

Applying for a job today takes some extra effort from your side, but if you are willing to put in the time, you will be rewarded in the end. Having the perfect cover letter will get you miles ahead of other applicants, and if you manage to find a unique way to describe yourself and your skills, you pretty much have the job in the bag. Think of it as a puzzle where every piece must fit - the structure, the powerful introduction, describing yourself and your skills, the length, and the closing paragraph.

How to make a CV to work internationally?

There is no single template for international applications. On the other hand, it is wise to adapt to the recruitment methods of the countries you contact.

  • First of all, the language used to write a CV must be that of the host country. Thus, the formulations must be mastered, the syntax and spelling without mistakes. Any unclear and poorly written application will be overlooked by the competition. At the same time, writing a CV in English (American or British, be sure to adapt to the recipient’s origin. The choice of words or expressions may differ greatly) is an additional asset to convince and show your motivation to work internationally.
  • Germany appreciates having as much information as possible on the civil status (parents’ profession, religious denomination, family situation…) in order to better target the candidate’s profile. The organization should remain basic, without layout effects. The past of employees is of great interest to German recruiters. It is therefore important to present, without too much detail, all experiences and training since college (dates of activities, job title). The CV must be signed and dated by hand to attest to the veracity of the information.
  • In the United States, on the other hand, discrimination law requires that personal information be kept to a minimum. The candidates maintain a certain discretion, the description must remain more standard (Name, first name, address, telephone). American recruiters appreciate direct and incisive wording, especially through the use of action verbs. It is strongly recommended that personal goals be mentioned to understand the candidate’s motivation. The highlighting of any publications in the context of your studies is a very good indicator for the recruiter.
  • Halfway between American and French customs, the Quebecers do not include any elements relating to private life, and no photograph either. On the other hand, mentioning your goals and career plan is essential for your application. Quebec recruiters will be more interested in describing your skills than in listing your diplomas.
  • As for Japan, it has very strict conventions. As such, it offers predefined structures. It is called Rirekisho. The models can be found in bookstores or supermarkets. The CV must be handwritten, in black ink. It is sent by mail, and not by email as is customary. The use of a large envelope is also required. Indeed, folding documents is extremely badly perceived on this side of the world. Photocopying is also a very bad signal to recruiters.

What are the elements to avoid in an international CV?

The first mistake to avoid when writing a resume is word-for-word translation. The risk is to give the impression of a too fragile mastery of the English language. A recurring trap is also that of “false friends”.

  • The Curriculum Vitae is translated as “Resume”. However, it is by no means a simple summary.
  • The term Grande école is the perfect example. It does not translate to “High school” (this term refers to high school). The French term is kept in this case. Example, “Grande école of Engineering”.
  • In the United States, “company” is the term used to describe a business, while the British use the term “entreprise” or “business”.

Beware of the equivalence of diplomas. Understanding and targeting language equivalencies is necessary before writing an international CV.

  • The BTS will be translated as “2 year technical degree”.
  • The master degree will be translated as “Master degree” or “Bachelor”.

Depending on the country, the use of the photo can be divisive. In the past, it was not acceptable to send a CV without a photo. Today, this is much more likely to be considered, especially because of the fear of companies to be accused of discrimination in hiring. However, some countries are still resisting and perceive the use of photography badly:

  • United States
  • New Zealand
  • United Kingdom

How to write a cover letter for an international career?

The cover letter is not mandatory, but let’s face it, it would be a shame to skip over such a crucial element for the recruiter. It makes the difference between the two. Even if it has elements in common with a classic cover letter (diplomas, objectives, hobbies…), facing an international audience adds an extra challenge to the task.

  • The first essential point concerns the candidate’s motivation to work abroad rather than in his or her country of origin. The question may seem perfunctory, but the reasons for studying elsewhere are of real importance to schools or companies. It must appear as a conscious and thoughtful choice.
  • Chances are you will not be the only international student in your program. Therefore, it is important to emphasize your interest in the exchange and in meeting new people. Shy or extroverted, recruiters want to see your ability to adapt to multicultural interactions. This should be a major motivation in your application.

What are the elements to avoid in an international cover letter?

  • A common mistake is to turn the focus of the cover letter on yourself. Mentioning one’s aspirations may seem legitimate, but the recruiter wants above all to know what the candidate can bring to the company. What is the point of selecting one student over another? It is important to put yourself in the recruiter’s shoes.
  • There is no need to copy what you have already mentioned in your CV. The cover letter should be complementary and provide new information about your application.
  • Too much neutrality can be discriminatory. The cover letter remains a space for expression, the recruiter wants to get a glimpse of your personality. Don’t stick to a standard, administrative style. Make the recruiter want to meet you.

  • Fill in the subject of your application.
  • Madam, Sir,

After doing a lot of research on the possibilities of working abroad, I decided to put together an international mobility file. Republicans move to expose Biden for flying in 400,000 ‘unvetted’ migrants

EXCLUSIVE — House Republicans are upping the pressure for the Biden administration to disclose the extent to which it has allowed hundreds of thousands of migrants to bypass the southern border and fly directly into the United States from abroad.

Missouri lawmakers in the House sent Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas a letter Thursday requesting details on the approximately 400,000 non-U.S. citizens the Biden administration has used the parole process on to wave foreigners into the country.

"Despite allowing over 10 million illegal crossings at our southern border, the President is still finding new ways to bring foreign nationals into our country," Rep. Mark Alford (R-MO) said. "President Biden has ignored the rule of law and allowed almost half a million individuals to fly directly into the United States."

In early 2023, the Department of Homeland Security announced it was expanding U.S. Customs and Border Protection's phone app, CBP One, to include a new feature that allowed up to 30,000 migrants from four countries with authoritarian governments — Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua, and Venezuela — to fly into the U.S. for inspection, and they could then possibly be paroled into the country. The initiative is known as the CHNV program.

Through the program, residents from those countries request "advance travel authorization" through the CBP One mobile app to take commercial flights "at their own expense" directly to U.S. airports. The app itself does not grant parole.

Citizens of those four countries who are applying from abroad to fly into the U.S. for an appointment with customs at the airport must have a sponsor in the country willing to support them financially, undergo security vetting, prove they can pay for a plane ticket to a U.S. airport, be vaccinated for measles, polio, and the coronavirus , and travel within 90 days.

But Republicans raised concerns from the get-go that the move was a roundabout way to lower illegal immigration numbers by allowing otherwise inadmissible migrants into the country, hidden in plain sight at airports nationwide.

A recent Fox News report on airport arrivals in the first eight months after its rollout revealed that migrants using the program have flown into 45 U.S. airports, largely ones in South Florida. Flights have also arrived in Missouri, raising the lawmakers' concerns.

Once in the U.S., a CBP officer will determine whether the immigrant should be granted parole and given permission to reside in the U.S. for two years if he or she meets "urgent humanitarian or significant public benefit reasons." The Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965 does not specify what "urgent humanitarian" or "significant public benefit" can include or not include.

The six GOP lawmakers — Reps. Ann Wagner, Blaine Luetkemeyer, Sam Graves, Eric Burlison, Jason Smith, and Alford — told Mayorkas in the letter that the DHS has gone "far beyond" its authority as outlined in the 1965 Immigration and Nationality Act.

"The Biden Administration has abused this authority to grant mass parole to foreign nationals based on state of origin, blatantly ignoring the law's case-by-case basis provision," the letter stated. "The INA explicitly states that granting parole does not change an individual's immigration status, and that the individual must be returned to their home country and that their case shall 'continue to be dealt with in the same manner as that of any other applicant for admission to the United States.'"

Lawmakers asked for the DHS to provide by the end of May how the government is tracking the 400,000 migrants admitted through the CHNV program and how it plans to ensure each migrant is removed from the U.S. since parole is only intended to last for two years.

The Biden administration has maintained that the CHNV initiative is a lawful use of parole authority and that it has deterred migrants from paying criminal organizations to smuggle them over the southern border.

The British Medical Association and the government have mutually agreed to explore mediation, a step which could ultimately end strike action by junior doctors.

A mediator has been agreed between the two parties, and they will shortly the process in a bid to end months of disruption to the medical field.

Health Secretary Victoria Atkins said: "As Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, my duty is to patients and I want to pursue all avenues to resolve the dispute with the BMA junior doctors committee.

"This will ensure they can focus on delivering the highest quality care and help consolidate our recent progress on waiting lists.

"I am pleased the BMA have agreed to explore mediation and I am hopeful that it will provide a way forward."

Labour's attempt to specifically ban "ninja swords" in the UK has been defeated in the House of Commons.

MPs voted 272 to 171, majority 101, against new clause 59, which would have banned the weapon.

They also voted 275 to 167, majority 108, to reject new clause 44, which sought to replace "prostitution for gain" with "sexual exploitation of an adult".

A Liberal Democrat proposal designed to make it an offence to fail to meet pollution performance commitment levels was defeated by 268 votes to 17, majority 251.

Consideration of the Criminal Justice Bill has ended for the day, with the second day of report stage yet to be scheduled.

Ninja swords are "difficult to ban" as straight-edged swords can be held for commemorative purposes, justice minister Laura Farris said.

Responding to shadow justice minister Alex Cunningham, she said: "I wanted to just provide the reassurance that there are both straight-bladed ninja swords, which I know that his amendment is directed at, but also curved swords.

"They're both covered. Curved swords were banned by the government in 2008.

"He will know that possessing a sword or any knife, even a kitchen knife, in a public place without good reason is already a criminal offence punishable by up to four years in prison."

The UK will spend £140m next year helping starving people in Yemen who are suffering one of the most "acute humanitarian crises in the world", the deputy foreign secretary has said.

Speaking exclusively to Sky News, Andrew Mitchell raised the plight of the Yemeni people, whom he said were living "on the margins of subsistence" following nearly a decade of civil war.

Mr Mitchell promised that the UK's bilateral support for Yemen would increase by 60% and that any money provided would be designed "directly to help people who are in a very perilous humanitarian position".

"It is Britain doing good, going to the rescue of the most desperate people in the world and helping them," he said.

The deputy foreign secretary's intervention comes following months of reporting from Yemen from Sky News' special correspondent Alex Crawford, who has detailed how the war in Gaza has had an adverse impact on the Yemeni people.

Yemen's Houthi militants, backed by Iran, have targeted ships in the Red Sea region which they claim are linked to Israel or helping its war effort.

"Chaos" in the UK's prisons was a point of focus for Sir Keir Starmer at Prime Minister's Questions earlier today.

Shortly after, it was announced an emergency measure has been triggered by the Ministry of Justice to deal with prison overcrowding in England.

Operation Early Dawn will see defendants in police custody remain there - and not be transferred to magistrates' courts for bail hearings - in case there is no space in jail cells for that prisoner if they are remanded into custody.

Sky News understands the measure is just being used in London and the North East, at the moment.

The Law Society, which represents solicitors in England and Wales, says many magistrates' court cases will be delayed as a result, with the most serious cases given priority.

Asked what his advice would be to Sir Keir, the former prime minister says: "To stick to his principles.

"Keir Starmer I know as a very talented but also very principled person. 

"I do think the pressures of politics are such that you have to deal with problems every day that you never anticipated, but you must never lose sight of why you're there in the first place. 

"And if you do lose sight of that, then you will fail. 

"If you don't lose sight of it and commit to your principles in implementing them, then I think you'll succeed, and I'm sure he will."

Gordon Brown, the former Labour leader, has urged Sir Keir Starmer to undertake a "root and branch review" of Universal Credit.

In a conversation with  Sophy Ridge , Mr Brown was asked whether the current Labour leader should commit to scrapping the two-child limit on the benefit.

Claimants of Universal Credit - with some exceptions - are only able to claim child benefit for a maximum of two children at the moment.

He says: "You've got to look at every aspect of Universal Credit which has gone wrong. And it's not, of course, just the two child rule that is causing problems. 

"It's the caps that have been placed on, for example, housing benefits. And it's the deductions that are taking place. 

"If you go on to Universal Credit, you don't get any benefit for five weeks. Therefore, you've got to take out a loan. 

"Therefore, half of the people on Universal Credit are now paying back loans that they took out because they didn't have any benefit under the system's rules. 

"And that means the DWP, the Department of Work and Pensions, it's now the biggest debt collector in the country, and some people are having 25% of the benefit cut every week, some people 30%.

"And that means they're forced further and further into poverty."

Mr Brown says: "All these rules have got to be looked at."

Gordon Brown, the former prime minister, is asked what needs to happen to help the 4.3 million children living in poverty in the UK.

He points to the September financial statement, and suggests the Household Support Fund, which is worth half a billion, "should be continued, not abolished". 

Mr Brown adds: "At the same time, I do think a children's fund should be created, and it could be with foundations and charities as well as businesses and local and national governments. 

"But we need to revive projects like Sure Start because we proved that until 2010, Sure Start was actually increasing educational performance, reducing demand for health care, was actually paying for itself and was actually cost-effective. 

"All the things I am proposing could be achieved within the fiscal rules that both political parties have set down."

Now joining Sophy Ridge is former prime minister Gordon Brown.

They begin their conversation on child poverty in the UK, which Mr Brown - who led the Labour Party from 2007 to 2010 - has warned is reaching "obscene levels".

"We've got probably the highest levels of poverty in living memory amongst children, and these figures have risen dramatically over the last few years," he says.

Mr Brown warns there are 4.3 million children who are in poverty in the UK, three million of whom will miss meals "at some point during the course of this month".

He adds: "This is a level of destitution for some families that we haven't seen for many, many years. 

"I grew up in a mining and textile town. We saw a great deal of poverty when I was growing up. 

"And we're back to these kinds of levels, and it really is something that demands urgent attention."

Mr Brown says the UK is now home to "austerity's children".

"These are the children born in the last 15 years, children who are growing up poor, who have probably never known what it is to be anything other than poor," he adds.

"And they don't have the clothes, they don't have shelter of high quality, they don't get the nutrition that they need, and we have to do something about it. 

"It is the biggest social problem we face. It is dividing our society, and it's going to get worse because the government has, in the last few weeks, given up on all the emergency help it was giving for heating. 

"It's going to abolish the Household Support Fund, which is the last line of defence against this destitution."

Sophy Ridge is now joined by her panel - Jacqui Smith, the former Labour home secretary, and Richard Tice, the leader of Reform UK.

They begin on the situation in Slovakia, which Jacqui says is a "terrible situation". 

"An attack on a democratically elected politician is also an attack on democracy, and how you respond to it therefore determines how much it damages your democracy," she says.

"It's really important at a time like this that politicians are really careful about what they say. That they focus on remaining calm instead of stirring up issues."

Richard points out that Slovakia has a relatively young democracy, and it's a "worrying time".

He says it shows the importance of "calm heads", rather than "creating a sense of increasing angst and trying to point fingers".

The conversation with Grant Shapps now turns to the issue of weapon supplies to Israel, and whether the UK will follow the US's lead and agree an arms embargo.

Sophy asks if he can guarantee weapons made or funded by Britain won't be used against civilians in Rafah.

The defence secretary insists "we don't send anything" to Israel in "military terms", and any arms agreements are "tiny" and have to "go through a licensing process".

"The UK government doesn't give them or sell them anything directly when it comes to arms," he says.

And while Britain's defence industry "is at liberty to export arms", even then there are "very, very few" piece of equipment that go to Israel.

"We legally cannot sell anything which would go against international humanitarian law," adds Mr Shapps.

He describes the debate around the UK's support for Israel as "one of the most misled, misguided debates I've ever heard".

"Unlike [with] Ukraine, we don't send them weapons."
