Nurse Aide Responsibilities

Can you transition from a cma to lvn, definition of customer service from a certified nursing assistant perspective.

  • How Much Does a Licensed Vocational Nurse Make?
  • What Degrees Do You Need for a CRNA?

If you're interested in going into the medical field but you'd prefer not to spend many years in medical school and a residency, then perhaps an auxiliary nursing career is right for you. An auxiliary nurse may be an unfamiliar term, but according to West London College, it's more or less the same title as a nursing assistant in the United States. This job is a great way to work with patients and help others while also making a decent salary. To become an auxiliary nurse, you will need to fulfill the necessary requirements.

Job Description

Before becoming an auxiliary nurse, it's important to understand the different terminology that can be used to describe this position. Auxiliary nurses are often referred to as healthcare assistants or nursing assistants. But no matter what your job title is, you will have the same responsibilities. An auxiliary assistant job description highlights the responsibilities of the job, which can include anything from taking vitals, assisting nurses in any healthcare procedure they may be administering, making sure patients are comfortable, administering medicine to patients, helping patients to clean and use the facilities, sterilizing patient rooms, assisting patients in everyday duties that they can't do for themselves, taking patients on walks and just being there to make the patient feel safe and secure.

Education Requirements

In order to become a CNA (Certified Nursing Assistant), you must first graduate with your high school diploma or obtain a GED. After that, you can enroll in a certified nursing program, which is usually offered at community colleges or at vocational-technical schools. Programs like these will only take a few weeks, and these health care-assistant training courses will be instrumental in providing you with the skills, knowledge and expertise necessary to land an auxiliary nurse position. Lastly, in order to work, you must pass a CNA competency exam and obtain your CNA certification, which is unique from state to state. Those who are dedicated and hard-working should have no problem achieving their goal to become an auxiliary nurse.

An auxiliary nurse usually works in a hospital, private practice or a community setting. This could be in a nursing home, a school district or in a group home for people with physical or mental disabilities. They could work at a community center, a camp or do home-visits with a licensed or registered nurse. Anywhere there are nurses and doctors there can usually be an auxiliary nurse hired to help.

Years of Experience and Salary

The salary of an auxiliary nurse, as of 2018, ranges between $26,910 and $33,262 , with the average salary being $29,601. While this might not seem very high, the pay varies, based on the state and on your work setting. With more experience and the more certifications you earn, you can get a pay raise. In addition to your salary, CNAs usually have good benefits, like health care and a pension, as well as job security.

Job Growth Trend

Job prospects for auxiliary nurses are looking very good, as the job outlook between 2016 and 2026 is growing faster than average at 11 percent, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. This is primarily because the huge baby boomer population is becoming older, and many CNAs will be needed to care for them.

What is a nursing school application cover letter.

A nursing school application cover letter works almost the same as a cover letter for any job application. For prospective nursing school students, a cover letter is the introduction to your application package, and a way of introducing yourself on paper to the admissions committee of a school. It is similar to a nursing school letter of intent or nursing school personal statement , but there are some key differences.

Firstly, a cover letter is typically shorter and more formal than a personal statement. It also tends to focus on your professional work experience, volunteer experience and skillset. A nursing school cover letter is designed to demonstrate why you are a good fit for a nursing program and how you will be an excellent future medical professional. A letter of intent or personal statement usually examines your personal motivations, experiences and reasons for wanting to become a nurse. It’s your way of answering the question ‘ why do you want to be a nurse ?’.

A nursing school application cover letter is a formal letter, typically no more than one page long. Or about 200-400 words maximum. Since the word count is low, you’ll need to be fairly concise and get to your point. You’ll also need to limit yourself to only a few points and keep things relevant. Like other formal letters, such as letters of intent, they include several important sections, which we’ve outlined below.

Restate why you are an ideal choice for the program and what you bring to the table. Invite them to get in touch if they have any questions about your application. Use a formal, polite salutation to close your letter. "}]">

Writing a good cover letter means convincing the admissions committee that you are a prime candidate or a nursing program and to give you a chance to interview with them. To do so, you want to provide evidence of your candidacy by sharing key experiences or skills you have. Then align those experiences to the nursing school’s program values. The cover letter allows you an opportunity to highlight the most important sections of your application package and demonstrate how you will become an excellent future nursing professional. There are many different kinds of experiences you can emphasize in your cover letter, even if you don’t have much work experience in health care or related jobs. Read some physician cover letter examples or MBA cover letter examples to get a better idea of what kind of experiences to include. You can also look at some ERAS experience section examples to see what kind of professional and personal experiences admissions committees like to see.

Next we’ll look at what kind of experiences to include in your nursing school cover letter—and what to leave out!

If you have any nursing certifications such as a CPR course, or have achieved anything noteworthy in your academic or personal life, such as a lifeguarding save at the community pool, definitely include these in your cover letter! These can be excellent examples of what you have to offer the nursing profession, and your dedication to living by the values of the profession. ","label":"Certifications or achievements","title":"Certifications or achievements"}]" code="tab1" template="BlogArticle">

What not to include

Your cover letter is relatively short, so avoid using too many details or launching into extensive personal anecdotes or stories. Avoid getting lost in the weeds or using irrelevant examples. Be sure to show why your chosen examples are relevant to the nursing school’s values or the nursing profession. It’s also important not to repeat too much information from your resume or other parts of your application. Elaborate and expand, but don’t just rehash old information.

Here we’ve included some samples of nursing school cover letters for your reference. Use these examples to help you write your own cover letter for nursing school!

Dear Director Higgins,

I am writing today as part of my application to your program at [Nursing School]. I am a recent graduate of [Pre-med university] and I am excited to take this next step in becoming a nursing professional. In my application you will see that I exceed the stated qualifications for your program intake, but first allow me to share with you why I believe I will be an excellent nursing student.

Throughout my undergraduate years, I have worked as a server at a family restaurant. In my years of working there, I have cultivated many desirable soft skills that make a good professional nurse, such as strong communication skills, diplomacy and conflict management. In interacting with the customers and other staff, I have developed an ease in managing all kinds of different individuals. Working alongside a restaurant team has also been very rewarding for my personal skill development, as it is a fast-paced and sometimes chaotic environment. It is challenging, but strong teamwork and collaboration is essential, and I have learned effective ways to work as part of the team.

I am also proud to have some experience in caring for patients. Although I have not had the opportunity to provide for human patients, I volunteer my free hours at an animal shelter, helping to care for sick animals, do routine cleaning and medication administration. I am consistently recognized for my strong work ethic, my compassion for the animals we help and my steady hands when helping the staff vet administer injectable medications. I have found working with these animals to be incredibly rewarding, and I look forward to an opportunity to work with human patients as a professional nurse.

I believe my experiences have give me a solid introduction to the work of a nurse, and I am excited to continue my education in health care. I will be an enthusiastic student in the classroom and no doubt an excellent example of the kind of nurse [Nursing School] can produce. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions regarding my application. I look forward to your reply.

Dear Admissions Committee,

I am writing this letter to share my qualifications for admission at [Nursing School] in this application cycle. I am a graduate of [University] and I have dedicated myself to gaining the needed experience in healthcare for the past several summers. My goal is to enter a career as a nurse in a women’s health centre or health clinic.

In pursuit of this goal, I have been gaining shadowing experience with several nurses at the [Name] Women’s Health Clinic in [City]. It was important to me to have multiple shadowing experiences so I could get some insight into my future career from actual practicing nurses and see firsthand what treating patients was like. I have found these experiences incredibly rewarding, as I have been able to assist with patients and earn valuable experience interacting with them in a clinical setting. Shadowing has shown me what I can realistically expect from a career in women’s health, and it has solidified my decision to enter this field of medicine. I have also been fortunate to meet a team of dedicated and talented nurses who have shared with me their insights on working in women’s health. Their advice and guidance on my burgeoning clinical skills has been a valuable teaching experience for me. Several of these nurses have also agreed to write letters of recommendation for me which you will find in my application package.

My shadowing experiences have given me a solid foundation of nursing and I am looking forward to starting my journey to becoming a women’s health care nurse. Please feel free to contact me at the email address or phone number on my application. I look forward to enrolling in the fall semester.

Kind Regards,

Alexandra Clopin

To write a cover letter for nursing school, use a formal letter format with the addressee’s name and title, an introduction, body and conclusion, followed by a formal salutation and closing. You should also include your contact information and details.

While a cover letter for nursing school is not always required, it can be a good idea to include one anyways. A good cover letter can help your application by providing some context or expanding on the information in your application.

To write a strong cover letter for nursing school, include the best and most meaningful of your professional or volunteer work experiences. Highlight the skills and abilities you have that relate to the nursing profession and provide clear, relevant examples.

Cover letters use a formal letter structure, as well as the familiar introduction, body and conclusion for the main sections of the letter.

A nursing school cover letter might include examples of your work experience, any skills, achievements or certifications you have that relate to your ability to become a good nursing professional, or how your personal values and commitment align with the nursing school’s mission and values.

No, a cover letter is not always a requirement for nursing school applications. Some nursing programs may ask for one, or they may state it as an optional part of your application.

Begin a cover letter for nursing school with a “Dear [Name and Title]. Try to address your letter to a specific person. If you’re not sure who will be reading the letter, use “Dear Admissions Committee” or similar. Avoid using “To Whom it May Concern.”

Cover letters are used to “pitch yourself” and secure an interview opportunity. They are an admission committee’s first impression of who you are and what you bring to the table. To pitch yourself in a cover letter means convincing the admissions committee that you have the experience, drive and skills to succeed in a nursing program. Essentially, you sell them on the idea that you are a prime candidate.

So, what’s the difference between an auxiliary nurse and a registered nurse in Nigeria? It comes down to qualifications and job duties.

Qualifications

First things first, let’s talk about qualifications. Auxiliary nurses typically have a diploma in nursing or midwifery, while registered nurses have a bachelor’s degree in nursing. The diploma route means shorter education and training times, often just 18 months or less, but it can limit your scope of practice as an auxiliary nurse compared to a registered nurse.

When it comes to job duties, it really depends on the context. In general, though, auxiliary nurses are more restricted when it comes to medical tasks than registered nurses. Auxiliary nurses may have limited decision-making powers and may be supervised by a registered nurse or doctor for certain treatments; for example, they may only be allowed to provide basic healthcare services such as dressing wounds or administering medications. Registered nurses often take on more responsibilities, including counseling patients on their health but also benefit from higher salaries and greater job security.

These include: passing an approved exam, obtaining a valid Nigerian nursing license, having at least two years of work experience in a healthcare setting, and completing the required program prerequisites courses such as anatomy and physiology.

At entry level, an auxiliary nurse may be assigned tasks such as assisting patients to the bathroom, collecting specimens for laboratory tests and monitoring vital signs. To become an auxiliary nurse, you need at least a senior secondary school certificate or its equivalent. Good knowledge of the English language is essential for all medical personnel as it is the official language of communication in all hospitals.

Who is an Auxiliary Nurse?

An auxiliary nurse is a professional who has undergone training to assist fully qualified nurses in the delivery of health care. Auxiliary nurses are often found in hospitals, as well as in residential homes, schools, community and outreach programs and GP practices.

An auxiliary nurse may also be referred to as an aide, assistant or attendant. The term ‘auxiliary nurse’ is generally used in the United Kingdom, while ‘nurse assistant’ or ‘nursing assistant’ is the term commonly used in other parts of the world.

If you are interested in pursuing a career as an auxiliary nurse, you should consider enrolling on an accredited training course. This will provide you with the skills and qualifications needed to gain employment within this sector.

How to become an auxiliary nurse in Nigeria

What role does an auxiliary nurse perform?

An auxiliary nurse will assist qualified nurses with their everyday duties and responsibilities. This may include cleaning equipment, as well as washing and dressing patients. A variety of tasks may be involved depending on where he or she works. An auxiliary nurse may work with a range of patients who have different health issues and conditions.

How to Become an Auxiliary Nurse

Auxiliary nurses, who are sometimes referred to as assistant nurses, nurse aides or orderlies, provide basic nursing care under the supervision of registered nurses. They are not required to have a college degree or license. Aspiring auxiliary nurses typically complete a short training course and acquire certification through the Nigerian Nurses Association.

Complete a training program. A number of technical schools and community colleges in Nigeria offer programs for aspiring auxiliary nurses. These programs are typically completed in about one year and provide students with both classroom instruction and hands-on experience. Course topics include basic nursing care, medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, and ethics related to patient care.

Requirements:

  • You must have completed your WAEC, NECO or NABTEB with at least 5 credits which include Mathematics, English and other science subjects.
  • You must be up to 18 years of age
  • You must be medically fit
  • A letter of recommendation from the church or community leader where you reside is needed
  • .Applicants are also required to take an entrance exam before they can commence their training at any of these institutions as would be made known to them during the application process.
  • Training for auxiliary nurses lasts for between 2-4 years depending on the institution where you signed up for training.

Difference between auxiliary nurses and registered nurse

An auxiliary nurse performs the same duties that a registered nurse does. The difference is that an auxiliary nurse works under the supervision of a registered nurse. In addition, an auxiliary nurse must complete an accredited nursing assistant training program.

Auxiliary nurse (also known as nursing assistant, patient care technician, home health aide, and medical assistant) works under the direction of a registered nurse or physician. The duties of the auxiliary nurse include feeding patients, bathing them, dressing wounds, keeping records of vital signs, assisting with examination and treatments, answering patient calls and providing patient comfort. An auxiliary nurse also performs administrative duties such as answering phones, scheduling appointments and updating charts.

Registered nurses are responsible for developing treatment plans for patients based on their diagnosis and evaluating their progress against those plans. Registered nurses assist doctors during surgery by sterilizing instruments and materials; they also administer anaesthesia to patients who are undergoing surgery. In addition to these duties, registered nurses supervise nursing assistants who work in their units.

Can an Auxiliary nurse become a registered nurse?

Yes. But it depends on the qualification received while training as an auxiliary nurse. There is a minimum NCE qualification that is required to be admitted into the school of nursing. With this, you can become a student nurse which is equivalent to a registered nurse.

After obtaining NCE, your next step will be to move from the position of auxiliary nurse to that of a student nurse. But if you don’t have NCE, then you’ll need to undergo a 6 months conversion program before you can be admitted into the school of nursing.

Auxiliary nursing is a very lucrative profession in Nigeria. With the rising cost of healthcare and the increasing number of hospitals, more and more auxiliary nurses are required every day. In fact, it was estimated that by the year 2020, there will be at least one auxiliary nurse for every 500 people in Nigeria.

Many auxiliary nurses are working as freelancers and are making a lot of money from their work. This is because they don’t have to work for a specific hospital or clinic; they can work for any hospital or clinic that is willing to hire them. They can also set their own schedule and make their own hours, which makes them very attractive to employers.

There are some legal issues associated with this kind of work, however. For example, if you’re working in a hospital or clinic where there are patients who may have communicable diseases (like AIDS), you must wear a mask and gloves at all times while you’re working there. If you’re not wearing these things, you could be exposing yourself to diseases that could potentially kill you.

Another issue is that many hospitals require that nurses have at least a bachelor’s degree in Nursing before they start working there; otherwise, they won’t hire them at all.

Auxiliary nursing is termed illegal if it involves performing the services of a registered nurse such as administering medications etc.

How much does an auxiliary nurse earn?.

Auxiliary nurses tend to earn from N20, 000 and above, depending on the health facility they are working with.

Being an auxiliary nurse in Nigeria is a noble vocation aimed at helping the sick and the needy. An auxiliary nurse is an important partner in the healthcare team. She provides emotional support to patients and families, assists in nursing care, and protects them from abuse and exploitation. She also seeks to maintain a safe, secure, and efficient environment for patients and their families through education on health laws.

How To Become An Auxiliary Nurse In Nigeria

How To Become An Auxiliary Nurse In Nigeria

Nigeria with a population of over 200 million people is one of the countries with highest number of human resources for health in Africa, out of 49 low income countries identified by world bank parameters as having markedly low numbers of nurses and doctors, Nigeria is sixth in position and falls well below the critical threshold of 23 nurses per 10,000 population. Despite the progress made by the Nigerian Nursing and Midwifery Council , there is still shortage of nurses in Nigeria.

Before becoming an auxiliary nurse, it’s important to understand the different terminology that can be used to describe this position. Auxiliary nurses are often referred to as healthcare assistants or nursing assistants. But no matter what your job title is, you will have the same responsibilities.

What Does An Auxiliary Nurses Do?

The role of an auxiliary nurse is to assist qualified nursing practitioners in administering care to patients. Auxiliary nurses are often referred to as health assistants. Auxiliary nurses require no academic qualifications, and the role can serve as a pathway into a career as a registered nurse . The main responsibility of an auxiliary nurse is to ensure patients are kept as comfortable as possible. An auxiliary nurse washes and dresses incapacitated patients, feeds patients at meal times and helps those who have difficulty walking to get around. Auxiliary nurses also help the elderly and disabled with toileting. An auxiliary nurse is also assigned to assess patients’ health condition by taking temperatures, measuring weight and assessing respiration levels. An auxiliary nurse also performs minor medical procedures and assesses blood pressure levels. She or he will also make patient’s beds, change their sheets when required and assist with the general upkeep of the ward.

Auxiliary nurses also work alongside health care scientists, assisting them in the identification and treatment of a range of diseases. Some work with audiologists, for instance, and help qualified scientists to research hearing disorders and develop effective coping strategies for patients. Auxiliary nurses also help health care scientists with the analysis of blood and urine samples and patient histories.

Clinical Support

Auxiliary nurses also perform clinical support roles under the supervision of health care professionals including physiotherapists, nutritionists, pediatricians and speech and language therapists. Duties vary widely depending on the form of therapy administered. Nurses may have to help patients mentally prepare for therapy sessions or set up equipment required for a session. They may also play a more proactive role and assist the therapist in actual treatment. Auxiliary nurses in this role play a key administrative duty, taking notes and keeping accurate records of patients’ medical histories. When performing these duties, auxiliary nurses are sometimes referred to as assistant therapists or therapist helpers.

Due to scarcity of qualified nurses in Nigeria, Auxiliary nurses are in high demand especially in large cities like Abuja, Lagos port Harcourt and other major cities. To become an auxiliary nurse in Nigeria, NO fixed training or syllabus or a minimum level of education is required. They trained on the job to follow orders from a Registered /Qualified Nurse or a Doctor. They are not trained to make a medical diagnosis or commence treatment.

However, according to the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria , any hospital operating or replacing nurses with auxiliary nurses, is operating with quack nurses, because they are not competent to deliver nursing care and members of the public that access services from such hospitals are doing so at their own risk. Hospitals are supposed to ensure that nurses are qualified, registered and licensed to practice as nurses. According to an official of the council, if you want to set up a hospital, you send the list of nurses to our organization, we then send our officers to verify, because we have verification offices which verify whether a person is qualified to practice or not. Also trained nurses are issued practicing licenses. A practicing licensed lasts for a period of three years, and before the expiration, the nurse is expected to undergo a mandatory development program which is attached with a two credit unit.

Difference Between Qualified Nurse and an Auxiliary Nurse

In certain countries, the training of auxiliary nurses  is at such a level that the dividing line between their duties and those of fully qualified nurses has become difficult to draw ; provision is even made, in certain countries, for the nursing auxiliary to acquire the title of qualified nurse. In other countries, on the other hand, the training prescribed is not sufficient to make it possible for greater responsibilities to be given to nursing auxiliaries.

A certified or registered Nurse will need to attend a national regulations’ specified period of Training in a recognized School of Nursing school or University, and then pass a standardized exam by Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria before he/she can practice. Moreover, a Nurse is expected to make some diagnosis and commence treatment before the arrival of a doctor.

Experience by an auxiliary does not equate to a Certified Nurse despite the fact that they put on similar uniform and work for the same health care providers.

Salary of Auxiliary Nurse In Nigeria

How much an auxiliary nurse earns in Nigeria depends on a number of factors, which include location of hospital and years of experience. The average salary of an auxiliary nurse in Nigeria ranges between =N= 25,000 – =N= 70,000 monthly. Those employed by state and local government health authorities earn higher than those in the employ of private hospitals . READ : 7 Things a Public Health Nurse Should Not Do
