The FIRS is responsible for assessing, collecting, and accounting for the money collected in taxes as well as other revenue accruing to the Nigerian government. Therefore, all Nigerian individuals and companies that sell products or services, work for the government, other public entities, private companies, or freelance systems are required by law to have a Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN).

In an interview with Kazeem Kayode Lawal , an experienced tax professional, he informed Legit.ng that the obligation to register and obtain a TIN extends to every person, including both natural and legal persons, irrespective of whether that person is exempted from paying taxes in Nigeria. Lawal clarified that legal persons pertain to corporate entities established through registration with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC).

Here is some important information for those looking to apply for their TIN.

  • You must ensure the address and name lines include no more than 200 characters (per field).
  • Ensure you provide the correct 11-digit phone number.

Addressing misconceptions about TIN, Lawal highlighted common misunderstandings, such as the belief that persons must make payments before acquiring a TIN and the misconception that those exempted from taxes in Nigeria are not obligated to obtain a TIN. Clarifying these points, he said:

Registering in the tax net and acquiring a Taxpayer Identification Number is completely free of charge. As a matter of fact, any tax official who is demanding money before registering a taxpayer must be reported so that appropriate disciplinary action can be meted out.
It does not matter whether the company is below the threshold for paying taxes or that it is an NGO. We must understand that obtaining a TIN is the first step towards tax compliance, the other steps are prompt filing of returns, prompt payment of due taxes, and complete and accurate reporting of one’s financial affairs.
Having a TIN even where one is exempted from paying taxes does not imply that one would have to pay taxes, rather it helps the tax authorities to accurately account for taxes forgone or tax expenditures, waivers, and incentives in general.
It could also be used to identify the less privileged amongst us so that the government can effectively give out cash transfers and other palliative programs. As a matter of fact, during the COVID-19 lockdown period in Sweden, it was the taxpayer register that was used to allocate and distribute palliatives to the citizens.

Finally, Lawal elaborated on the impact of TIN on business operations in Nigeria, he said:

  • Having a TIN presents a business in a very good light as a tax-compliant business enterprise. It impacts the ability of the enterprise to relate and transact businesses freely with other entities not only in Nigeria but across the world, and to carry out its fiscal obligation as an agent of the government for the deduction and remittances of withheld taxes from transactions with other business entities and from the payment of salaries to its workers.
  • It ensures a smooth business operation for the business enterprise because several business activities cannot be done in Nigeria today without having a TIN. For example, you cannot open a bank account for your business without having a TIN; you cannot import spares and raw materials without a TIN; you cannot export your products for sale outside Nigeria without a TIN; you cannot apply for land allocation for your business without a TIN, and so on.
  • No business will survive without capital and having a TIN impacts the ability of small businesses to access finance, particularly loan finance from the bank, as registration in the tax net is a requirement before any bank would grant a loan.

What is TIN?

Who needs to obtain a tin, why is having a tin necessary, procedure for obtaining tin, templates and examples to download in word and pdf formats, how to obtain a tax identification number (tin).

Everyone has a civic duty to remit taxes to the government , covering various types such as personal income tax, capital gains tax, value-added tax (VAT), companies' income tax, and property tax.

As a result, having a tax identification number (TIN) is crucial for tax remittance. To enhance tax revenue, the Finance Act of 2020 requires every individual to register for and obtain their TIN, as those without registration may be prevented from operating a bank account for business purposes .

This article will outline the steps required to obtain a TIN .

The TIN is a 14-digit unique number generated as part of tax registration and is used to identify taxpayers for tax remittance. It is free and can be obtained from any Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) office. It is used by the taxpayer alone and it is necessary for every person required by law to pay taxes in Nigeria.

Tax payment is mandatory for all individuals and businesses , which means that individuals, companies, business names, and incorporated trustees are mandated by law to obtain a TIN.

Every company or business must obtain a TIN, regardless of whether they are profitable .

Taxes are calculated based on a company's net profit. If a business does not make a profit in a given accounting year, it may not be required to pay taxes. However, having a TIN is still a mandatory requirement . Hence, while charitable organizations such as incorporated trustees are not required to pay taxes, they are required to obtain TIN.

Beyond the legal obligation for a TIN, here are additional reasons why it is important to have one:

1. To open a business bank account

The TIN is necessary for opening and maintaining business accounts at Nigerian banks. This implies that a person can not open or operate a corporate account without their TIN. Therefore, the applicant must first register and obtain a TIN before opening or operating a business account .

2. For capital importation into a foreign country

For a company or business to invest or buy shares in a foreign country, that business is required to import capital into that foreign country. In any case, the TIN is usually required to import capital to another country.

3. To apply for a government loan

To obtain a government loan, the applicant must show their TIN.

4. To obtain a tax clearance certification

A tax clearance certificate is written evidence that confirms that a person's taxes have been paid in full . It is used to obtain loans from banks, register real property at the Lands Registry, contest for public offices, and so on. Conversely, a tax clearance can not be issued to an unregistered person .

Upon registration and commencement of business, the next thing to be done is to apply for TIN and VAT registration .

VAT registration is required for businesses that charge VAT . Companies generating an annual turnover of N25 million or more must enroll for VAT through the FIRS . The relevant business must obtain a TIN and provide relevant information, including the company's Memorandum and Articles of Association and requisite corporate forms.

Visit any tax office close to you or near your business location and obtain a tax application form . The application form is free of charge .

Note that taxpayers are free to make inquiries at any tax office at no cost .

Complete the application form by filling in the following required information:

1. For individuals, the full name , residential address , phone number and email address of the individual.

2. For registered businesses (such as companies, business names, incorporated trustees and other registered organizations):

  • the full name of the organization;
  • date of incorporation or registration ;
  • registration number ;
  • registered office address of the business;
  • precise nature of the business ;
  • date of commencement of business;
  • names and addresses of directors, proprietors, or partners of the business;
  • names and addresses of the shareholders (if any);
  • name and address of banker(s) , and
  • names and addresses of auditors .

Submit an application letter and the completed application form at the relevant tax office together with the following:

1. certificate of registration (for businesses);

2. valid means of identification (such as national I.D. card, international passport or driver's license) for individuals;

3. a copy of a document showing proof of payment for electricity (for individuals).

Provide your biometric information .

Upon confirmation, you will be issued a 14-digit TIN, which will be used for tax remittance. You may also be issued a VAT certificate of registration, which makes the applicant a registered VAT agent for VAT payment.

The TIN is a unique number given to any taxpayer in Nigeria. It is issued after an individual or business has registered for tax. Among other things, the TIN allows you to remit your taxes, open and operate a business account, and obtain a tax clearance certificate when required.

You can register by sending an application letter to the FIRS office in the State where your business is located together with the completed TIN and VAT forms and other required documents, such as a valid I.D. card, certificate of registration (for businesses) and a copy of proof of the applicant's payment for electricity.

The Tax Identification Number is a set of digits assigned by Nigeria’s tax authorities to registered taxable individuals and businesses in the country. It’s the tax agencies’ principal means of identifying registered taxpayers.

In the past, Nigerians had to sign up for at least two different tax identification numbers: one issued by the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), and another by the tax body of the state in which they resided. Now, you only need to register for one- the Joint Tax Board Tax Identification Number (JTB TIN). It’s recognized by all levels of government.

Just this November, the Senate passed a new finance bill, which makes significant changes to the country’s tax regimes.

When it’s signed into law by the President, it will require individual residents of Nigeria to provide banks with their Tax Identification Number before opening a new bank account (already mandatory for business accounts). The only difference between the offline and online application process is the procedures.

You’re still getting a verified tax identification number regardless of your application process.

Where to Apply for Your TIN Offline in Nigeria

To apply for your TIN offline in Nigeria, visit the nearest FIRS office with the required documents (same documents as with the online process).

If you don’t know the closest Federal Inland Revenue Service office around you, visit the FIRS office locator web page to find one in your vicinity.

Online TIN application has its advantages and disadvantages, and so does applying offline.

Applying online is faster, more convenient, and can be done from the comfort of your home.

However, it could be a complicated process for people unfamiliar with the online space.

In such situations, an offline registration might be preferable.

However, that, too, has its advantages and disadvantages.

Advantages of Applying for TIN offline

The advantages of applying for TIN offline are:

  • You’re attended to by certified personnel who understand the system, thus minimizing the margin for error.
  • Offline application is an alternative for individuals who are not familiar with online processes
  • You can have your related questions and inquiries resolved immediately as opposed to scouring the internet for answers.

Disadvantages of Applying for TIN Offline

  • Paperwork can be cumbersome compared to the online process.
  • It might require you to travel long distances to a registration center if one isn’t around the corner
  • It takes longer to receive your TIN, unlike the online process which can take only a few minutes.

Common Challenges During TIN Application

The TIN application process can sometimes be complicated, especially when encountering challenges.

In this section, we’ll cover some common challenges you’ll likely face whether you’re applying offline or online.

The process of applying for a Tax Identification Number (TIN) can be challenging. Some common challenges include:

  • Lack of proper documentation: This happens when you don’t have all the required documents, such as a valid ID card, passport, or driver’s license.
  • Inadequate information: You may not have sufficient information about the application process, such as the required forms and fees.
  • Technical difficulties : Technical issues can hinder the online application process. They include slow internet speed or website downtime
  • Processing delays: The processing of TIN applications can take a long time, especially in high-demand periods.
  • Application errors: Errors in filling out the application form can lead to rejection or delay in processing.

Don’t worry. You can avoid these challenges by seeking assistance from a tax professional or contacting the relevant tax authority for guidance.

Also, some tax authorities may offer online resources to help applicants during the application process.

TIN registration requirements

When applying for the TIN, be sure to keep the following documents within reach:

  • A duly completed VAT Form 001 – to be filled by the Taxpayer
  • A duly completed INPUT form – to be filled by the Taxpayer
  • An application letter for VAT/TIN registration. It should be typed on company letterhead and addressed to the nearest FIRS office.
  • Original certification of registration (Business name, incorporation) and other relevant documents for sighting.
  • Photocopies of certification of registration and other relevant documents
  • Means of identification ( National ID card, Valid Driver’s license or International passport)
  • Utility bill (Original and photocopy)
  • A functional email address

How to Verify Your Tax Identification Number

So, you’ve gotten your Tax Identification Number—well done!

TIN Protection Best Practices

Tax Identification Number (TIN) is a unique identifier assigned to businesses and individuals for tax purposes.

Hence, you must carefully use and protect your TIN to avoid fraud, identity theft, and other financial crimes.

Also, you might eventually need to update your TIN in the event of changes in the required information.

This section will guide you through these processes we just mentioned, starting with how to update your TIN.

How to Update Your TIN

Updating your TIN might be required if you’re a taxpayer with incomplete records with the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS).

In such situations, we recommend providing additional information at the Tax Office where your TIN was initially generated.

If you registered for your tax ID number online, you might want to visit the nearest tax office to update your information.

How to Protect Your TIN

To protect your Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN), you should take the following measures:

Keep your TIN confidential: Avoid sharing your TIN with anyone unless it is necessary for tax purposes.

Secure your TIN documents : Keep your TIN documents in a safe and secure place to prevent them from falling into unauthorized hands.

Verify the validity of requests : Verify the identity of anyone who requests your TIN information before sharing it.

Monitor your credit report: We recommend regularly monitoring your credit report to detect any fraudulent activity that may be associated with your TIN.

Report suspicious activity: If you suspect that someone has missed or stolen your TIN, report it immediately to the FIRS.

Here are some ways to do so:

  • Click this link to the FIRS “Contact Us” page, and leave a message stating that your JTB TIN certificate has been stolen or used for fraudulent purposes.
  • Call the FIRS provided lines: 09074444441, 09074444442, 09072111111
  • Send an email to [email protected]
  • Visit the nearest tax office for guidance

What is JTB TIN?

JTB TIN is a tax identification number issued by the Nigerian Joint Tax Board. It is a unique 10-digit number for identifying, tracking, and taxing businesses, companies, and individuals in the country.

You can pay any type of tax with your JTB TIN since it’s universal.

What is the Difference Between FIRS TIN and JTB TIN?

The key difference between FIRS TIN and JTB TIN is that:

  • JTB TIN is a Joint Tax Board-issued TIN for personal income tax, withholding tax on individuals, and stamp duties on individuals.
  • FIRS TIN is issued by the Federal Inland Revenue Service for all types of taxes, such as companies’ income tax, value-added tax, petroleum profits tax, etc.

Both TINs are unique 10-digit numbers used to identify, track, and tax Nigerian companies, businesses, and individuals.

However, the Joint Tax Board (JTB) created the JTB TIN to replace FIRS TIN and unify tax processes.

How Long Does it Take to Get TIN in Nigeria?

When applying online, you can receive your Taxpayer’s identification number instantly or within hours.

While offline, it usually takes longer.

Keep in mind that the time frame might increase depending on the level of demand within the period of your registration.

What is a JTB Form?

A Joint Tax Board registration Form is the document you complete when registering for a JTB TIN in Nigeria.

This document contains your personal and business details, such as name, address, phone number, email, nature of business, etc.

It also requires the applicant’s signature and stamp or their authorized representative’s for TIN validation.

Get Your TIN In Nigeria: Follow This Simple 9-Step Express Guide

' src=

It’s easy to get your TIN in Nigeria, but it’s not always clear where to start. So we’ve compiled a simple 9-step guide that will help you navigate the process step-by-step.

Tax payment is compulsory for companies, as announced by the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC). A Tax Identification Number (TIN) will be assigned automatically to a company after it is successfully registered, especially a limited liability company.

How to get your TIN in Nigeria

Every Nigerian resident or non-resident earning income or engaging in a business must have a TIN in Nigeria.

However, there are some exceptions to this rule: Individuals who are not required to register for a TIN in Nigeria because they do not have a Nigerian address can still apply for one online at the FIRS website; they will also be required to provide proof of their identities such as their passport number and photograph.

There are various categories of people who are expected to have TINs under the law, namely:

Individuals (sole proprietors), companies (corporate bodies).

  • Associations and Clubs. * Firms. * Trustees of Trusts (newly introduced).

This does not cover some businesses, such as business names. Businesses that do not fall under a Limited Liability Company will have to apply for the TIN in Nigeria with the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS).

Sole proprietors are individuals who have a business or profession that generates income. They are expected to have TINs and should make sure that their TIN is current before filing their annual return.

Examples: A sole proprietor is an individual who owns any business, trade, or profession. It can also be applied to individuals who own companies but do not fit into any other category (for example, if they do not pay employees).

Companies are expected to have TINs and should make sure that their TIN is current before filing their annual return. A company can be any type of business, including a corporation or limited liability partnership. It can also apply to a non-profit organization or charity.

Associations and Clubs

Associations and Clubs are not required to register with the FIRS, but they are required to have a TIN in Nigeria. They must apply for a TIN through their members who are individuals or corporate bodies.

For example, if you are an association of real estate agents who organize regular meetings to discuss issues affecting them all as professionals in the field, then your association should apply for a TIN so that it can be registered with FIRS.

  • Firms are companies that have a minimum of two partners. They are not required to register with FIRS if they are engaged in trading or manufacturing activities and their annual revenue does not exceed N500,000.
  • A firm may only be established for a period of five years from its registration date (or renewal). A firm may be dissolved at any time by filing an application for dissolution before the end of its term; this application should be filed with the Federal High Court within seven days after dissolution or within such further time as may be allowed by law.

Trustees of Trusts (newly introduced)

In the new FIRS Act, Trustees of Trusts are required to have a TIN. The Trustee must also register with FIRS and pay tax on income earned from Nigeria.

How to apply for a TIN in Nigeria

How to apply for a TIN in Nigeria

Applying for a TIN in Nigeria for an already incorporated business is easy. If the business is not yet registered, you should do that with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) first before you proceed to apply for a TIN at the Federal Inland Revenue Service.

Once you have fully registered your business, you can proceed to visit any Federal Inland Revenue Service office closest to you with the following documents;

  • Memorandum & Articles of Association
  • Certificate of Incorporation: CAC2, CAC7
  • Company seal
  • Utility bill
  • Application letter on company letter-headed paper
  • Duly completed TIN Application form

You are required to take the original copy and 2 photocopies of each document. The originals are required for sighting only, while 1 copy will be left with the FIRS, and 1 copy will be stamped and signed by a FIRS official as evidence that you have made an application.

While applying yourself for TIN is free, there might be additional costs if you choose to engage the services of a third party, and you might incur some costs.

Normally, the TIN should be assigned almost instantly or the next day, but now it depends on the workload of the FIRS offices, and as such, the whole process drags on for about a week or two.

Paying Tax is a civic duty; businesses are required to fulfill this obligation. For your business to be able to fulfill this obligation, you need to obtain your Tax Identification number.

If you want to get your TIN in Nigeria, then this is the right guide for you. It will teach you how to do it and what documents are required.

The application for Income Tax Registration will basically provide answers to the questionnaire below:

  • Name of Company
  • Registered Office
  • Business Address

  • Date of Incorporation
  • Date the Company Commenced Business
  • Accounting Date
  • Name and Address of Banker(s)

It is the information you provide that the tax authority will use to profile your company for tax registration. The second application which will be on your company’s letter head paper is for VAT Registration as mention above. The applications should be duly signed by you or any authorised company’s registration.

As part of the documentation, you are required to submit the following document:

  • Two copies of Certificate of Incorporation. You are to bring the original for sighting.
  • One copy of Certified True Copy of Memorandum and Articles of Association
  • One copy of Form CAC 2 (CO2) and CAC 7 (CO7)

If your documentation is complete, you will then be issued Tax Identification Number (TIN). This can be completed immediately.  At times, it may take few days depending on some factors such as the volume of application received, availability of power supply and access to network.

You are required to supply your Tax Identification Number (TIN) each time you have anything to do with the tax office. Tax Identification Number (TIN) is now one of the requirements for opening business bank account.

HOW TO OBTAIN TIN IN NIGERIA

TAX IDENTIFICATION NUMBER REGISTRATION IN NIGERIA

Upon incorporation of a company in Nigeria, the next mandatory step towards doing business in Nigeria is tax identification number registration. The procedure for how to obtain TIN in Nigeria has been simplified over the years by the FIRS. The body regulating tax administrations in Nigeria is the Joint Tax Board (JTB), while the regulatory agency in charge of issuing Tax Identification Number (TIN) and Tax Clearance Certificate (TCC) for companies is the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS). There are laws and regulations backing the enforcement of tax, such as the Companies Income Tax (Amendment) Act 2020, Personal Income Tax Act 2011, Value Added Tax Act (Amendment) 2020 and other extant tax laws.

The State Inland Revenue Service is responsible for the Issuance of taxpayer ID and Tax clearance certificate to individual taxpayers. Each state in Nigeria has its internal revenue service, for instance, Lagos has its own Internal Revenue Service, which is the LIRS (Lagos State Internal Revenue Service)

It is important to state that an application for TIN precedes an application for a Tax Clearance Certificate, as the latter cannot be gotten without the former.

STEPS TO OBTAIN TIN (TAX IDENTIFICATION NUMBER)

Registration at the FIRS :

The first step to take is to obtain a Tax Identification Number (TIN), which is done by writing an application with the company’s letterhead to the FIRS. A TIN application may be done within six months of incorporating a company, but it is advisable such application is done immediately after the company’s registration, as most banks now require TIN for an opening of a bank account. The company is expected to apply for TIN at the FIRS office close to where the company is located. The TIN represents the identification number that the company would be identified in relation to the payment of all taxes to the federal government through the FIRS.

For companies, the audited financial statement, reflecting the output and input of the company’s transaction will be used to calculate the tax payable by the company subject to the computation of the officials in the FIRS office.

Documents For Processing of TIN

  • A copy of the certificate of incorporation, copy of memorandum and articles of association as well as other incorporation documents are to be submitted at the FIRS for the processing of TIN.
  • Completion of the tax registration form

STEPS FOR APPLYING FOR A TAX CLEARANCE CERTIFICATE

  • The taxpayer is to fill the registration input form and submit to the FIRS branch
  • Wait for FIRS assessment approval or rejection (at this stage, the assessment can be subject to additional assessment by the tax authority, as a result of any disagreement with items such as disallowed expenses in the financial statement
  • Follow up at the FIRS office to confirm approval or issuance of the certificate

There has been an advanced shift in technology especially in the area of tax administration recently in Nigeria. Before, filling and application processes were not easily accessible by an applicant of TIN and Tax Clearance Certificate. Now the process of e- filing has been embraced to the point that companies and individuals can now access their status through the portal and other online activities.

To maintain a good tax policy and tax compliance measures with no detrimental effect, it will be appropriate and safer to consult an expert on tax administration who may be an accountant or a tax lawyer to monitor every related tax transactions of the company

The duties of the expert in the field of tax administration is to inform individuals or companies when they are due to pay tax, verify audited statement of account, monitor procedures and applications submitted to the tax regulatory authorities as well as ensuring that the company or individual they represent file their annual returns, within the specified date given by regulatory agencies.

Nigeria TIN number guide

In Nigeria, the Tax Identification Number (TIN) is provided to both individuals and business entities. Employed individuals receive their TIN from the States Board of Internal Revenue/Federal Capital Territory Inland Revenue Service (JTB TIN), while members of the armed forces of Nigeria, Nigeria Police Force, diplomats, and corporate entities obtain their TIN from the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS). Serving as a unique identifier, the TIN is applicable to all registered persons and entities for the payment of various tax types. It's noteworthy that Nigeria adopts a unified TIN approach, without issuing separate TINs for different taxes.

The Tax Identification Number (TIN) issued by the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) features a numerical format with a hyphen. The arrangement consists of eight digits followed by a hyphen and the sequence 0001, exemplified as 12345678-0001. On the other hand, the TIN issued by the Joint Tax Board (JTB) adopts a purely numerical structure and comprises 10 digits.
