80% IIT Kanpur PhD scholars struggle with mental health, 'no-termination' on the cards

Iit kanpur's phd scholars have been struggling with mental health, noted a survey revealing alarming statistics. a 'no-termination' policy is on the cards to tackle this crisis..

Listen to Story

iit kanpur, iit kanpur mental health, mental health struggles, iit kanpur mental health survey, mental health struggles at iit kanpur. iit kanpur no termination, no termination policy

In the wake of three tragic suicides within a month, two involving research scholars, an internal survey conducted by the major students’ body at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)-Kanpur shed light on the challenges faced by PhD scholars.

The findings revealed alarming statistics -- a significant 80% of individuals enrolled in PhD programmes have encountered mental health challenges.

Additionally, 60% have contemplated dropping out of their research programmes, with numerous instances of discrimination reported, including "favouritism," "elitism," and "casteism" by academic guides.

Conducted in July 2023, the survey comprehensively explored the academic, social, financial, and personal dimensions of the lives of research scholars at IIT Kanpur campus.

MENTAL HEALTH STRUGGLES OF IIT KANPUR PhD STUDENTS

  • 80% of respondents experienced anxiety and mental illnesses during their PhD.
  • 34% are actively combating mental health challenges.
  • 62% never sought help from on-campus counselling services.
  • 60% contemplated dropping out at least once.

BACK-TO-BACK SUICIDE CASES

Between December 19 and January 18, the institute witnessed three tragic incidents of student suicides.

On January 18, a 29-year-old PhD student was discovered deceased in her hostel room.

Earlier on January 10, an MTech student from the Department of Aerospace Engineering was found dead in his hostel room, reportedly following a termination notice from the institute.

IIT KANPUR'S NO TERMINATION POLICY

In response to the crisis, IIT Kanpur is contemplating a 'no-termination policy,' preventing terminations based on academic performance.

Professor Shalabh, the dean of academic affairs at IIT-Kanpur, explained the 'no-termination policy,' stating that students won't be expelled based on their cumulative point index or CPI.

Under this policy, students can retake exams if needed. Initially implemented for undergraduates in 2022, there's ongoing consideration to extend it to postgraduate students.

COMMITTEE PROBE AND PROPOSED CHANGES

A five-member committee is diligently investigating the alleged suicides, collecting inputs from various stakeholders.

MAJOR PROBLEMS

The survey exposed the limited utilisation of on-campus counselling services, with only 11% seeking help.

Increased participation, especially from PhD students, could enhance the support system for all postgraduate students.

Student-supervisor dynamics play a pivotal role in mental well-being. Instances of discriminatory acts, including favoritism, elitism, casteism, and casual sexism, have been reported.

Building conducive rapport between students and guides is crucial for a nurturing academic environment.

Approximately 33% of respondents confessed to feeling isolated or lacking friends, emphasising the need for a vibrant social life.

MOVING FORWARD

The survey outcomes highlighted the pressing need for comprehensive support systems addressing mental health challenges, discriminatory acts, and academic pressures.

As IIT Kanpur navigates through this challenging period, addressing mental health concerns and discriminatory acts becomes imperative.
