In my speech, the topic focused on is about obesity and if the parents of obese children should be fined or not. Obesity is a major problem among the rich all over the world. More so in America, most children from well off families are obese due to bad eating habits and the presence of excess food. The speech will also focus on the main causes of obesity, which affects even the poorest people in the society. It will shed light on the myth that obesity is only for the rich and cannot affect the poor. Through the analysis of all the relevant facts, the speech will also explain the measures to be taken in order to reduce the cases of obesity in the society.

The speech will be speaking on a question of both fact and policy. The facts are that obesity is a major problem in most households and should be addressed lest the problem escalates. Policies should be put in place to prevent an escalation of obesity cases in order to avoid spending so much on addressing the issue. The speech will therefore explain the various policies that should be implemented in order to deal with obesity cases.

My central idea in the speech is on parenting and obesity. This addresses how the two are related and the responsibilities of parents in preventing obesity in their children. The target audience for my speech is the public more so the families with obese children. I would organize my points according to order of importance. The main points will be highlighted first before the less important points. Each point will be explained broadly with all the relevant facts. The main points will be given more time in the explanation part than the less important points. The main points will be supported by several materials, including journals such as the “journal of obesity” and “Health matters”. The speech will also review news reports specifically BBC news on obesity.

The steps I have taken to answer potential objections from my audience include explaining facts on the issue and doing thorough research on all aspects of obesity. I have also reviewed the constitution to equip myself with the relevant laws guarding health matters. In my conclusion, the methods used to reinforce my central idea include, emphasizing and convincing. The emphasis used in the conclusion will give the audience a clear understanding of the purpose of the speech. Of course these statements for a medical speech are not my opinion, but examples to trigger your mind for finding your own medical speech topic. Let these ideas form a rough outline in your head.

Medical persuasive speech topic ideas based on official position statements of organizations in the field, they are perfect for building speech topics in public speaking education. I scraped the net and found mission and vision claims that could be transformed into an issue for speechwriting purposes:

Sun Damage – ‘In most situations, sun protection to prevent skin cancer and sun damage to the skin is required during times when the ultraviolet index (UVI)A is raised’. According to the dermatology resource DermNet NZ. Offer pros and cons, and offer tips for listeners.

Dentistry – ‘The ADA Council on Scientific Affairs continues to believe that amalgam is a valuable, viable and safe choice for dental patients.’ Do you agree with the ADA Council on Scientific Affairs? Or not? Try to find persuasive arguments to adstruct the opposite, or weaken this firm medical persuasive speech topic ideas a little bit.

Nutrition – ‘In overweight and obese insulin-resistant individuals, modest weight loss has been shown to improve insulin resistance. Thus, weight loss is recommended for all such individuals who have or are at risk for diabetes.’ The American Diabetes Association writes on its site. Examine and prove direct relations between overweight and diabetes in a persuasion way of talking. Weight loss and diabetes in itself are great medical persuasive speech topic ideas.

Revalidation – ‘In the United Kingdom doctors will need to be revalidated every five years in order to retain their licence to practise.’ A citation of the Royal College of Surgeons of England. Good idea? Take a stand and convince your audience.

Equity – ‘A greater equity in health should be a progress indicator of populations within and between countries.’ That’s a formal statement of WHO World Health Organization. Do yo agree? Construct the arguments of this thesis.

Surgery – ‘Pregnant women should be given the right to choose major abdominal surgery (cesarean section) or a normal birth.’ That is the opinion of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. Judge pros and cons, convince your public as speaker in all ways. Good idea for an essay too!

To write a captivating and persuasive speech you must first decide on a topic that will engage, inform and also persuade the audience. We have discussed how to choose a topic and we have provided a list of speech ideas covering a wide range of categories.

What is persuasive speech?

The aim of a persuasive speech is to inform, educate and convince or motivate an audience to do something. You are essentially trying to sway the audience to adopt your own viewpoint.

The best persuasive speech topics are thought-provoking, daring and have a clear opinion. You should speak about something you are knowledgeable about and can argue your opinion for, as well as objectively discuss counter-arguments.

How to choose a topic for your speech

It’s not easy picking a topic for your speech as there are many options so consider the following factors when deciding.

Familiarity

Topics that you’re familiar with will make it easier to prepare for the speech.

It’s best if you decide on a topic in which you have a genuine interest in because you’ll be doing lots of research on it and if it’s something you enjoy the process will be significantly easier and more enjoyable. The audience will also see this enthusiasm when you’re presenting which will make the speech more persuasive.

The audience’s interest

The audience must care about the topic. You don’t want to lose their attention so choose something you think they’ll be interested in hearing about.

Consider choosing a topic that allows you to be more descriptive because this allows the audience to visualize which consequently helps persuade them.

Not overdone

When people have heard about a topic repeatedly they’re less likely to listen to you as it doesn’t interest them anymore. Avoid cliché or overdone topics as it’s difficult to maintain your audience’s attention because they feel like they’ve heard it all before.

An exception to this would be if you had new viewpoints or new facts to share. If this is the case then ensure you clarify early in your speech that you have unique views or information on the topic.

Emotional topics

Emotions are motivators so the audience is more likely to be persuaded and act on your requests if you present an emotional topic.

People like hearing about issues that affect them or their community, country etc. They find these topics more relatable which means they find them more interesting. Look at local issues and news to discover these topics.

Desired outcome

What do you want your audience to do as a result of your speech? Use this as a guide to choosing your topic, for example, maybe you want people to recycle more so you present a speech on the effect of microplastics in the ocean.

Persuasive speech topics

These topics are just suggestions so you need to assess whether they would be suitable for your particular audience. You can easily adapt the topics to suit your interests and audience, for example, you could substitute “meat” in the topic “Does consuming meat affect health?” for many possibilities, such as “processed foods”, “mainly vegan food”, “dairy” and so on.

After choosing your topic

After you’ve chosen your topic it’s important to do the following:

• Research thoroughly
• Think about all of the different viewpoints
• Tailor to your audience – discussing your topic with others is a helpful way to gain an understanding of your audience.
• How involved are you with this topic – are you a key character?
• Have you contributed to this area, perhaps through blogs, books, papers and products.
• How qualified are you to speak on this topic?
• Do you have personal experience in it? How many years?
• How long have you been interested in the area?

While it may be difficult to choose from such a variety of persuasive speech topics, think about which of the above you have the most knowledge of and can argue your opinion on.

How to be sure you are choosing the best topic

To be sure you make an informed decision, before you settle on a topic check the guidelines about what makes a good persuasive speech topic and the "how to" examples, as well as the list itself.

( Hint -  a not so subtle one : The absolutely best way to use my list is as a prompt to get your own creative juices working. That tip, combined with the series questions in the infographic below will help you cut through the time you spend dithering about trying to decide what topic to do.)

What makes a persuasive speech topic good?

A persuasive speech topic is good if it:

• fits with the audience - Are they interested in it? Does it benefit them in anyway? How is it of value to them? Can you make it appealing? If it's an old topic, (one that has done a million times before),  can you make it fresh and interesting?
• is a fit with you - You already know something about it, or you're really interested in finding out more, and you know what want you to achieve through giving the speech.
• can be researched and prepared within the time frame you need the speech for
• fits the criteria and the purpose of your speech - set by yourself, your teacher, club, the organization who hired you to speak ...

How to use this list of topics effectively

Treat each idea as a starting point - a hook to give your brain something to latch on to.

As you scan the list look for the speech topics triggering more than a flicker of interest.

Stop and consider those more carefully.  Examine the topic from as many angles as you can. Apply imagination. Shake, rattle and roll that idea around and u se the questions in the infographic  to see whether it fits your needs.

And remember, any topic can be handled multiple ways.

Same persuasive topic - different treatment

Here are two examples to show you how the same topic can be adapted for different audiences. The topic is "Voice Matters".

" Voice Matters - the impact of a teacher's voice on students" - Example 1

The Intended Audience: teachers

Speaker Credibility: many years of teaching English and drama, plus public speaking experience

Speech Angle: to persuade the listeners (teachers) that how their voices sound in their student's ears influences how they are responded to, how their students behave and ultimately how they learn.

Specific Speech Purpose: to have them sign up for a voice workshop

Main ideas:

• Voice image - how we are perceived by others is influenced by voice quality. This in turn impacts on how we are responded to. (Do check the link. It's really interesting how much voice quality influences our lives.)
• What is a good quality voice? What personality or character traits are attributed to a person who has a good voice? Use sound clips to demonstrate. Ask for suggestions from the floor. How could that affect students?
• What is a poor quality voice? What do people assume about the speaker with that type of voice? How could that affect students?
• How do you know what you sound like to others? Use prepared sound clip of self to demonstrate.
• Can voice quality or voice image be changed? Why would you do/not do that? Provide researched examples of before and after work on voice.

"Voice Matters - the benefit of a good telephone voice" Example 2

Someone else might come along looking for a good persuasive speech topic and pick "Voice Matters" too. This time the treatment goes like this:

Speaker Credibility: senior recruitment specialist for a major firm in town

Speech Angle: to persuade listeners that their telephone voice, (how they say what they say), is their initial calling card to getting an interview

Main Ideas: As illustrated in the first example above because the core material is the same or similar but the examples used to carry the persuasive argument and benefits will be relevant to the audience.

Scientists uncover how our brains try to tell the difference between music- and speech-like noise

Music and speech are among the most frequent types of sounds we hear. But how do we identify what we think are differences between the two?

An international team of researchers mapped out this process through a series of experiments—yielding insights that offer a potential means to optimize therapeutic programs that use music to regain the ability to speak in addressing aphasia. This language disorder afflicts more than one in 300 Americans each year, including Wendy Williams and Bruce Willis.

"Although music and speech are different in many ways, ranging from pitch to timbre to sound texture, our results show that the auditory system uses strikingly simple acoustic parameters to distinguish music and speech," explains Andrew Chang, a postdoctoral fellow in New York University's Department of Psychology and the lead author of the paper , which appears in the journal PLOS Biology . "Overall, slower and steady sound clips of mere noise sound more like music while the faster and irregular clips sound more like speech."

Scientists gauge the rate of signals by precise units of measurement: Hertz (Hz). A larger number of Hz means a greater number of occurrences (or cycles) per second than a lower number. For instance, people typically walk at a pace of 1.5 to 2 steps per second, which is 1.5–2 Hz. The beat of Stevie Wonder's 1972 hit " Superstition " is approximately 1.6 Hz, while Anna Karina's 1967 smash " Roller Girl " clocks in at 2 Hz. Speech, in contrast, is typically two to three times faster than that at 4–5 Hz.

It has been well documented that a song's volume, or loudness, over time—what's known as " amplitude modulation "—is relatively steady at 1–2 Hz. By contrast, the amplitude modulation of speech is typically 4–5 Hz, meaning its volume changes frequently.

Despite the ubiquity and familiarity of music and speech, scientists previously lacked clear understanding of how we effortlessly and automatically identify a sound as music or speech.

To better understand this process in their PLOS Biology study, Chang and colleagues conducted a series of four experiments in which more than 300 participants listened to a series of audio segments of synthesized music- and speech-like noise of various amplitude modulation speeds and regularity.

The audio noise clips allowed only the detection of volume and speed. The participants were asked to judge whether these ambiguous noise clips, which they were told were noise-masked music or speech, sounded like music or speech. Observing the pattern of participants sorting hundreds of noise clips as either music or speech revealed how much each speed and/or regularity feature affected their judgment between music and speech.

It is the auditory version of "seeing faces in the cloud," the scientists conclude: If there's a certain feature in the soundwave that matches listeners' idea of how music or speech should be, even a white noise clip can sound like music or speech. The results showed that our auditory system uses surprisingly simple and basic acoustic parameters to distinguish music and speech: to participants, clips with slower rates (<2Hz) and more regular amplitude modulation sounded more like music, while clips with higher rates (~4Hz) and more irregular amplitude modulation sounded more like speech.

Knowing how the human brain differentiates between music and speech can potentially benefit people with auditory or language disorders such as aphasia, the authors note. Melodic intonation therapy, for instance, is a promising approach to train people with aphasia to sing what they want to say, using their intact "musical mechanisms" to bypass damaged speech mechanisms. Therefore, knowing what makes music and speech similar or distinct in the brain can help design more effective rehabilitation programs.
