Legendary Back Item Ad Infinitum Guide

GW2. Fractal Legendary Back Item Ad Infinitum Guide.

Obtaining the precursor, Unbound , requires players to complete the three Ad Infinitum I – III collections. The fourth collection, Legendary Backpack: Ad Infinitum, will allow the creation of the legendary Ad Infinitum . These four collections will be primarily focused on the Fractals of the Mists where players will be presented with challenges to complete and items to collect on their journey for the legendary back item. Takes 10 days to complete each of the four collections required to craft Ad Infinitum, as you can typically only earn three Fractal Research Pages per day through recommended fractal dailies. Sunqua Peak Fractal, Nightmare Fractal and Shattered Observatory Fractal each reward an extra page when completed in Challenge Mode , reducing the minimum time to complete each collection to 5 days .

Ad Infinitum I: Finite Result – 6AP

To start this journey you need to go inside the Mistlock Observatory and talk with Kelvei . He will give you the item Theory of the Finite Result to unlock this first collection.

For this collection you need to collect 11 fractal components , here you can see every item detailed:

• Sold by BUY-2046 PFR in the Mistlock Observatory for 20 Pristine Fractal Relics.
• Sold by BUY-4373 in the Mistlock Observatory for 100 Fractal Relics + 80 Silver.
• Activate the challenge mote, and complete the level 1-20 Swampland Fractal with an 80% reduction to healing.
• Activate the challenge mote, and complete the level 1-20 Aquatic Ruins Fractal with an 80% reduction to healing.
• Beat the Jade Maw in under 5 minutes in the level 20 Solid Ocean Fractal.
• Sold by a vendor in the Urban Battleground Fractal for 1 Fractal Journal. To find the Ascalonian Fractal Field Researcher, complete the boss fight and go through the previously locked gate where the final boss spawned. The NPC will be inside the room.

NOTE: Takes a minimum of 10 days to complete, as you can only earn a maximum of 3 Fractal Research Pages per day. However if you do the challenge modes for Nightmare, Shattered Observatory and Sunqua Peak Fractals you will earn extra pages.

• You need to complete the meta-event at Wayfarer Foothills, The Frozen Maw to earn a Gigantic Ice Elemental Core, then interact with the Boiling Hot Magma in the Volcanic Fractal (which will spawn after killing the final boss).

• Defeating The Mossman or the Bloomhunger in the Swampland Fractal will give you a Charged Clump of Swamp Moss so you have to take it to the Specially Charged Energy Storage Tank located in The Opticalium – [&BDUAAAA=] .

• Sold by BUY-4373 in the Mistlock Observatory for 1,350 Fractal Relics.

• Charge a +4 Agony Infusion in a Mist Geyser in the Swampland Fractal after defeating Bloomhunger.

• Sold by a vendor in the Captain Mai Trin Boss Fractal for 1 Ball of Dark Energy.

NOTE: You can earn Ball of Dark Energy by using Ascended Salvage Kits and Ascended Salvage Tools:

• Ascended weapons (high chance)
• Ascended armor (high chance)
• Ascended amulets (very low chance)
• Ascended accessories (very low chance)
• Ascended back items (very low chance)
• Ascended breathing apparatus (low chance)

Once you complete this collection you will get rewarded with Proof: Finite Result which contains the very basic materials to craft the first tier of the back item Finite Result. You can make it with any level 500 crafting discipline.

NOTE: You don’t need to craft this back item yet to continue with the next collection (but you will need for the final one) , the next step will unlock when you talk to Kelvei at Mistlock Observatory and he will give you the Theory of the Upper Bound.

Ad Infinitum II: Upper Bound – 6AP

• Purchased from BUY-2046 PFR in the Mistlock Observatory for 30 Pristine Fractal Relics.
• Purchased from BUY-4373 in the Mistlock Observatory for 200 Fractal Relics + 80 Silver.
• Activate the challenge mote, and complete the scale 36 or 44 Uncategorized Fractal with an 80% reduction to healing.
• Activate the challenge mote, and complete the scale 27 Snowblind Fractal with an 80% reduction to healing.
• Complete the scale 15 Thaumanova Reactor Fractal in under 20 minutes.
• Sold by a vendor after completing the Molten Boss Fractal for 1 Fractal Journal.

• You need to do the meta-event Mordrem Vinewrath in the Silverwastes to obtain a Vinewrath Tendril, then you have to trade it to Frozen Jade Field Researcher at the end of the Solid Ocean Fractal.

• You need to defeat Lornarr Dragonseeker the final boss in the Snowblind Fractal, to obtain a Ice Elemental Core, then you have to take the item to one of the Luminescent Pollen Clouds beneath one of the four outposts during The Breach meta-event in the Silverwastes.

• For this step you need to upgrade the Prototype Fractal Capacitor that you bought on the previous collection from exotic to ascended. To do this you have two Mystic Forge recipes shown below:

• 1 Glob of Coagulated Mists Essence
• 1 Gift of Ascension
• 250 Glob of Ectoplasm
• 1 Prototype Fractal Capacitor (Ascended)
• You will get as result the Beta Fractal Capacitor (Infused).

• Charge a +6 Agony Infusion in a Mist Geyser in the Molten Furnace Fractal.

• Sold by a vendor in the Captain Mai Trin Boss Fractal for 2 Ball of Dark Energy.

NOTE: If you previously crafted the first tier of the back item, you can salvage it for 5 Ball of Dark Energy.

Once you complete this collection you will get rewarded with Proof: Upper Bound which contains the very basic materials to craft the second tier of the back item Upper Bound. You can make it with any level 500 crafting discipline.

NOTE: You don’t need to craft this back item yet to continue with the next collection (but you will need for the final one) , the next step will unlock when you talk to Kelvei at Mistlock Observatory and he will give you the Theory of the Unbound.

Ad Infinitum III: Unbound – 6AP

• Purchased from BUY-2046 PFR in the Mistlock Observatory for 40 Pristine Fractal Relics.
• Purchased from BUY-4373 in the Mistlock Observatory for 400 Fractal Relics + 80 Silver.
• Activate the challenge mote, and complete the scale 28 Volcanic Fractal with an 80% reduction to healing.
• Activate the challenge mote, and complete the scale 21 Cliffside Fractal with an 80% reduction to healing.
• Complete the level 10 Molten Boss Fractal in under 5 minutes after enabling the challenge mote.
• Sold by a vendor in the Thaumanova Reactor Fractal for 1 Fractal Journal

• You need to interact with Vexa’s Test-Golem Remains , located within Vexa’s Lab jumping puzzle at Fireheart Rise, on the platform southeast of the area. Neither Vexa nor her Golem need to be defeated for this to occur. You will get Vexa’s Golem Diagnostic Reader then with it, you have to analyze the remains of Old Tom at the end of the Uncategorized Fractal.

• Once you defeat Champion Rabsovich in the Underground Facility Fractal, you will get a Rabsovich’s Locker Key, then with it you have to interact with Rabsovich’s Locker located at the southwest of Dredgehaunt Cliffs in the Dociu Excavation area – [&BFgCAAA=] , see image below.

• 1 Shard of Crystallized Mists Essence
• 1 Beta Fractal Capacitor (Infused)
• You will get as result Fractal Capacitor (Infused).

• Charge a +8 Agony Infusion in the Mist Geyser in the Snowblind Fractal.

• Sold by a vendor in the Captain Mai Trin Boss Fractal for 3 Ball of Dark Energy Instead of heading forward to complete the fractal, run all the way back down the ramp and through the aetherblade encampment.

NOTE: If you previously crafted the second tier of the back item, you can salvage it for 9 Ball of Dark Energy.

Once you complete this collection you will get rewarded with Proof: Unbound which contains the very basic materials to craft the third tier of the back item Unbound. You can make it with any level 500 crafting discipline.

NOTE: This time you will need to craft the third tier of the back item, the next step will unlock when you talk to Kelvei at Mistlock Observatory and he will give you the Theory of Ad Infinitum.

Legendary Backpack: Ad Infinitum – 6AP

For this collection you need to collect 13 fractal components , here you can see every item detailed:

• Unlocks automatically by talking with Kelvei after you crafted Unbound.
• Purchased from BUY-2046 PFR in the Mistlock Observatory for 50 Pristine Fractal Relics.
• Purchased from BUY-4373 in the Mistlock Observatory for 600 Fractal Relics + 80 Silver.
• Activate the challenge mote, and complete the level 53 Underground Facility Fractal with an 80% reduction to healing.
• Activate the challenge mote, and complete the level 65 Aetherblade Fractal with an 80% reduction to healing.
• Complete the level 95 Captain Mai Trin Boss Fractal in under 25 minutes.
• Sold by a vendor in the Captain Mai Trin Boss Fractal for 1 Fractal Journal.
• You need to defeat the Greater Nightmare Vine inside the Twilight Arbor dungeon to obtain a Jungle Wurm Egg. Then you have to bring it to the Mossman’s hut inside the Swampland Fractal. You can access the Mossman’s hut after defeating Bloomhunger using the tunnel in the boss room.

• You need to defeat the Legendary Archdiviner in the Cliffside Fractal to obtain Archdiviner’s Mallet, then with it you have to jump into the middle of the exploded Thaumanova Reactor in Metrica Province to charge it. To gain access to this area you need to defeat the world boss Fire Elemental , and after his death, run towards the console in the middle of the reactor and you will need a Matrix Cube Key to open it.
• The key spawns in random locations on the ground and will always be hidden, either obscured or covered. It will be topped with small green flames, although it can appear as a small lumpy rock or as a small obelisk. It looks similar to the chaos shards in the area, but smaller. The key will change locations or be unavailable at times. For instance, you may have to search the same set of bushes in the earth area repeatedly until you find the key. The key has no name but you will get an interact prompt when close to it. However if some other player have the key, they can open the area for everybody else.

• Charge a +10 Agony Infusion in the Mist Geyser in the Cliffside Fractal. Go through the gate to the right when entering the final boss platform. The gate opens after defeating the boss.

• Sold by a vendor in the Captain Mai Trin Boss Fractal for 3 Ball of Dark Energy
• After defeating Captain Ashym, take a Gift of Wood to the Ascalonian woodcutter, located inside the building that opens in the Urban Battleground Fractal.
• You can buy the recipe for the gift at Miyani near the Mystic Forge.

• Take a Gift of Metal to the dredge weaponsmith’s workbench located inside the Molten Furnace Fractal.

Once you complete this collection you will be rewarded with Gift of Infinity which will allow you to craft the final tier and Legendary back item.

The final Mystic Forge recipe for Ad Infinitum is:

• Gift of Infinity
• Gift of Fortune
• Gift of Ascension

To be fair I had balls of dark sitting in storage so I didn’t need to

You still need to because you require “the spirit of the X” that you get from salvaging the previous tier. There is no way around having to craft all of them.

Okay, so because I found no real guides to completing this legendary collection and the fact that it has many things to which if you don't pay attention it can cost you more than it should I decided to help you save some ascendeds and whatnot.

Okay so before I get into more details let's get this straight:

• You need Heart of Thorns to complete the collections. You may start the collection but buying certain items require fractal masteries which you can only progress if you have HoT.
• You will need a total of 3 Balls of Dark Energy to finish all 4 tiers of this collection. Yes you do need 5 just to buy collection items and a bunch more to craft the backpacks but salvaging the previous tiers of the backpacks will give you enough to finish, so don’t start salvaging your ascendeds.
• You will need a total of 4150 relics and 140 pristine relics to finish this collection.
• You will need a total of 112 Fractal Research Pages which only drop from daily fractal chests. If you still need to get these pages, then doing the dailies to do so will also give you relics of course, so don’t start farming yet!
• Leave the items that require relics for the end and don’t start farming relics if you don’t need them. Getting the other items will also get you some relics so you should really only be worried about that once you have every other item from the collection.

What follows is basically copy-pasta from the official wiki rearranged a bit and with some additional info and maps for your convenience. To start the collection you will have to speak to Kelvei, the Legendary Observer   in the Mistlock Observatory. So let's begin:

Ad Infinitum I: Finite Result

Challanges / collections related to a specific fractal level:

• Activate the challenge mote, and complete the level 2 Swampland Fractal with an 80% reduction to healing.

• Take a Clump of Swamp Moss to the Specially Charged Energy Storage Tank at the Opticalium , obtained by killing Bloomhunger in the Swampland Fractal (2, 32, 56).

• Charge a + 4 Agony Infusion in a Mist Geyser in the Swampland Fractal ( 2, 21, 32, 41, 56, 67, 77, 83) .

These three items can be obtained from one run at the level 2 fractal.

• Activate the challenge mote, and complete the level 3 Aquatic Ruins Fractal with an 80% reduction to healing.

• Beat the Jade Maw in under 5 minutes in the level 20 Solid Ocean Fractal .

• Imbue a Gigantic Ice Elemental Core in the Volcanic Fractal ( 6, 19, 28, 46, 52, 63, 72, 87, 92) , obtained by killing the Svanir Shaman Chief in Wayfarer Foothills .

Completing these fractal levels will yield you 24 fractal relics if you choose level 6 for the last and get all the Swamplands items in one run.

To get a Ball of Dark Energy you will have to salvage an ascended armor or weapon . Rings have absolutely no chance of dropping a Ball upon salvage, and other trinkets are reported to have very low chance. Armors and weapons are guaranteed to yield you a Ball.

Congratulations on your Finite Result \o/ NOW GO AND SALVAGE IT! Well actually you can take it for a walk while you are finishing Ad Inf II but you will have to salvage it anyway. Good news though: in the next collection you will have to craft another ascended backpiece so you won’t be left without one :3 Anyways salvaging the Finite Result gives you:

Ad Infinitum II: Upper Bound

Round 2! All things as mentioned above in the first collection.

• Activate the challenge mote, and complete the level 36 Uncategorized Fractal with an 80% reduction to healing.

• Activate the challenge mote, and complete the level 27 Snowblind Fractal with an 80% reduction to healing.

• Complete the level 15 Thaumanova Reactor Fractal in under 20 minutes.

• Trade a Vinewrath Tendril in the level 20 Solid Ocean Fractal , obtained from the Mordrem Vinewrath in the Silverwastes .

• Imbue an Ice Elemental Core in the Silverwastes , obtained from Shaman Lornarr Dragonseeker in the Snowblind Fractal ( 5, 16, 27, 37, 51, 74, 86).

• Charge a + 6 Agony Infusion in a Mist Geyser in the Molten Furnace Fractal ( 9, 23, 39, 58, 73, 89, 93) .

Completing these levels will yield you 48 relics if you take lvl 5 and 9.

Phew you got your Upper Bound. Yeah, you gonna salvage that too, tough love. Dry your eyes mate look at the lűűt from the salvage:

Would you look at that! 9 Balls! Jolly good show indeed.

Ad Infinitum III: Unbound

Activate the challenge mote, and complete the level 28 Volcanic Fractal with an 80% reduction to healing.

Activate the challenge mote, and complete the level 22 Cliffside Fractal with an 80% reduction to healing.

Complete the level 10 Molten Boss Fractal in under 5 minutes.

Analyze Old Tom 's remains with Vexa's Golem Diagnostic Reader in the Uncategorized Fractal ( 4, 12, 36, 44, 62, 79, 91) , obtained from Vexa's Lab in Fireheart Rise .

Use Rabsovich's Locker Key in the Dociu Excavation obtained in the Underground Facility Fractal ( 8, 17, 29, 38, 43, 53, 68, 76, 81, 95) .

Charge a + 8 Agony Infusion in the Mist Geyser in the Snowblind Fractal ( 5, 16, 27, 37, 51, 74, 86) .

Completing these levels will yield you 41 relics if you take levels 4, 5, 8.

Make in the Mystic Forge with

Legendary Backpack: Ad Infinitum

  Challanges / collections related to a specific fractal level:

  Activate the challenge mote, and complete the level 53  Underground Facility Fractal with an 80% reduction to healing.

  Activate the challenge mote, and complete the level 54  Aetherblade Fractal with an 80% reduction to healing.

  Complete the level 100  Captain Mai Trin Boss Fractal in under 25 minutes.

  Obtain a  Jungle Wurm Egg by defeating the Greater Nightmare Vine in  Twilight Arbor . Bring it to the Mossman's hut in the  Swampland Fractal .

  Take the  Archdiviner's Mallet from his remains at the top of the  Cliffside Fractal . Jump into the middle of the exploded Thaumanova Reactor in  Metrica Province to charge it.

  Back to being broke:

  After defeating  Captain Ashym , take a   Gift of Wood to the Ascalonian woodcutter, located inside the  Urban Battleground Fractal .

  To craft the  Gift of Wood you will need a lvl 400 Huntsman and

  Take a  Gift of Metal to the dredge weaponsmith's workbench located inside the  Molten Furnace fractal .

  To craft the  Gift of Metal you will need a lvl 400 Weaponsmith and

And there you have it \o/ To craft the legendary backpiece Ad Infinitum you will need

Known issues:

• When crafting the capacitors in the mystic forge make sure that you use the correct transmutation. If you change the skin of the capacitor, even though it states that it will function as the untransmuted item in the mystic forge, it might not allow you to complete the forging. Changing the skin back to the original will solve this problem.

A tip to get the ectoes and also in general to maximize your profit: keep green weapon drops and throw them in the Mystic Toilet. There is about a 20-25% chance of 4 greens giving you a rare which if salvaged can yield 0-3 ectoes making it well worth (though you are better off with selling the rare if its worth at least 1g). Also, salvaging rings can give you matrices, but only salvage the infused rings. Salvaging normal ascended rings will get you so few matrices that you would be better off buying the matrices themselves instead of buying the salvage kit. The normie rings can go straight to the merchant sliding down on a waterslide of tears or be saved for alt characters.

That's very nice guide, thank you! There's one thing missing though - In second collection, when listing materials needed for Beta Fractal Capacitor you wrote

1 Prototype Fractal Capacitor (Ascended) . (bought in the last collection)

The one bought in the first collection is exotic, you have to ascend it before throwing it into mystic toilet to get Beta Capacitor. So  500 more relics and a stack of ectos to farm.

Great guide! I've actually not done much anything of this collection, so this will come in handy.

For anyone interested, the cheapest way to get your starting Dark Energies would be to make some relatively cheap Ascended Heavy Armor - typically, Magi's (Hronk's) is cheap, so something like  Hronk's Warfists  tends to be a safe bet. If you want to check for yourselves,  GW2Efficiency  has a nice, always-up-to-date list of the cheapest Ascendeds.

Typically we're talking somewhere in the area of 50g per Dark Energy.

If you want to be a bit more extravagant you can craft Ascended Weapons that you just want for the skin and salvage those, but that feels a bit luxurious. On a semi-related note, the best way to unlock all the Ascended Weapon skins (if you're so inclined) would be to just craft each weapon type once and then statswap through all the different color types.

I was actually wondering this myself for some time: does statswapping ascended weapons actually change skin colour in the process. It's good to know it does.

Anyway very nice and detailed guide! I will look into this at some point too, haven't just had the time nor energy for making this yet. ;p

Updated the thingy with the new and final collection. Sorry for the delay, I couldn't get to it before because... of the person I am. I tried to weed out stuff related to how old fractals worked, like the dailies and such, but some might still be in there, so feel free to message me and I'll edit the post.

Hello,after return to GW2 we want to know which is now the best way to farm fractal relic after done the daily fractal's (T4+recs).Years ago farming fractal 40 was a good way to farm fractal relic's after the daily fractal's are done.We train the 99 and 100 CM but this will take time.

Farming 42 is the new trend now, if you look something to farm like the old 40.

Maybe offtopic, but I will just add here something that many players don't pay attention to.The Bag of Fractal Relics sold by BUY-2046 PFR for prestine relics is not the same as Handful of Fractal Relics which you get by selling fractral pots. So it is kinda worth buying the bags from BUY-2046 PFR for 15 relics per prestine if you don't need the prestines for trinkets or the Mist Attunement.

To return to the question imo Aetherblade is the fastest one.. You need some pulls and a class that can do 1st skip, as weird as it sounds in 2020 mesmer ideally fits the role of support here then add some DHs or pfbs for neat pulls.

Mai Trin and Aetherblade are probably the quickest Fractals atm, yea.Mai Trin being more straight forward and Aetherblade likely being faster with skipping.

Fractals of the Mists ( FotM ) is a special dungeon that consists of an array of mini-dungeons called fractals , each featuring its own story and environment. The Mists refers to the setting of the fractals which represent various realities and historical events found by groups of explorers. Fractals feature some unique systems and design, including a difficulty scale, Agony mechanic, Mistlock Instabilities and other.

Like other dungeons, Fractals of the Mists are designed and balanced for parties of five players, but allow smaller groups of fewer players. Characters are adjusted to level 80 within the fractal. Fractals are one of the primary sources of ascended equipment and provide materials for crafting infused equipment and attuned equipment . They are one of the core pillars of Guild Wars 2's endgame .

The Fractals difficulty scale ranges from 1 to 100, and can be selected prior to entering the fractal. The personal fractal level is an account-wide stat which tracks the current maximum difficulty scale that can be selected. To increase the personal fractal level, and therefore, the highest fractal scale accessible to the account, the player must complete a single fractal on a fractal scale equal or greater to their personal fractal level. This provides progression, allowing players to continuously complete higher levels on the difficulty scale and earn greater rewards as a result.

When entering Fractals of the Mists, the players arrive in the Mistlock Observatory in the Mists , which serves as a fractal lobby . There, players meet Dessa and her group of scientists, who research islands of reality found in the Mists. As these areas still contain threats, the players are asked to "stabilize" each fractal — make it safe for the scientists to start their work. Throughout each fractal, Dessa's communicates with the party and comments on their progress. Once a fractal is stabilized, she and her krewe transport the characters back to the Mistlock Observatory.

Getting there [ edit ].

• Memory of Old Lion's Arch – Requires Lion's Pride acquired via achivements. The entrance is located at the docks of Fort Marriner .
• Mistlock Sanctuary lounge – Requires Mistlock Sanctuary Passkey from the Gem Store . The entrance is on the eastern side.

Once any member of your party has entered, you will be prompted to join them from anywhere within Lion's Arch , Memory of Old Lion's Arch or Mistlock Sanctuary . Note that you will not be prompted if you're already in a different fractal instance, even in the Mistlock Observatory lobby area. If you end up in a separate instance to the rest of your party, leave to Lion's Arch and then use the prompt to join them.

Matchmaking [ edit ], difficulty scale [ edit ].

Fractals of the Mists uses a difficulty scale in contrast to the story and explorable modes of dungeons . The scales are as follows:

• Tier 1: Initiate, 0—25
• Tier 2: Adept, 26—50
• Tier 3: Expert, 51—75
• Tier 4: Master, 76—100
• Your personal fractal level increases by one each time you complete a fractal scale equal to or greater than your personal level.
• The scale may be changed while in the lobby through the Scale Setting Sequencer .
• Increased personal levels offer increased rewards , even if the run is at a lower difficulty level. Higher difficulty levels offer greater challenges and higher chances of better rewards, from foes, chests, and bonus chests.
• Each fractal scale corresponds with a specific fractal 'island' and set of unique conditions.
• There are four fractal difficulty scale ranges that are listed in the Looking For Group tool. For new characters, all of these skill ranges are locked (they cannot be used to find groups). The first scale range called "Initiate Scales 1-25", will unlock when a character reaches level 80. Higher group scale ranges will unlock when an account's personal fractal level nears the upper boundary for that group. For example, the ability to search in the 51-75 range unlocks when an account's personal fractal level is 46. More details can be found on the page Looking For Group .
• Standard foes spawn in greater numbers and have higher levels.
• Foes gain increased health and damage values.
• Some foes will gain new abilities, e.g. in the Uncategorized Fractal , the harpies start to knock players back.

Fractals include more substantial changes starting at level 26, 51, 76, so these are called the difficulty "tiers".

• New items begin dropping at higher tiers; other items begin dropping more frequently.
• Agony is added to enemy and boss attacks at level 20, and it continues to increase with each level.
• A Mistlock Instability is added at level 26, with additional instabilities added at levels 51 and 76 (for a total of 3).
• Interrupting or killing it will cause it to disappear. If a downed player stealths or teleports away, it will continue its finisher, but it will fail if a player is still stealthed or has moved far enough away by the time its animation finishes.
• Fractals with the Fractal Vindicator instability will spawn a Fractal Vindicator instead, which deals heavy damage to its target and persists until slain. Unlike with the avengers, only one vindicator will spawn per player whenever they go downed until their current vindicator has been slain.
• Daily Fractals rewards are available for difficulties 1-25, 26-50, 51-75 and 76-100.

Mistlock Observatory [ edit ]

The Mistlock Observatory serves as the lobby area for the dungeon. It offers a variety of relevant services and merchants that sell fractal-related equipment , Fractal Potions , and infusions . The Fractal Instability Trainer gives access to a training area where players can test their build against agony, mistlock instabilities, and enemies of various ranks.

A portal near the entrance of the Mistlock Observatory can be used to access the fractals; this requires confirmation from all players in the party.

Differences from dungeons [ edit ]

• There are no waypoints . If any party member dies, they must wait to be revived by their party or for the rest of the party to get out of combat , at which point any defeated member is given the option to teleport back to the most recently completed checkpoint (or to leave the fractal entirely).
• Any character that re-enters an existing fractal instance (excluding the lobby) will spawn dead.
• Any characters under level 80 will be scaled up , allowing lower-level characters to participate, though stats gained from gear will still be lower, and mobs will generally target lower leveled players specifically.

Agony [ edit ]

Agony is an effect introduced starting at scale 20, reducing healing and dealing a large percentage of your maximum health as damage per second. The amount of damage inflicted gradually increases as the difficulty scale increases, starting at 10% and capping out at 180%. Certain mechanics, mistlock instabilities, and enemy attacks will apply Agony.

The damage taken from Agony can be reduced with Agony Resistance , down to a minimum of 1%. The main source of Agony Resistance are from infusions that can be placed in Ascended and Legendary equipment . Temporary Agony Resistance can be obtained from using an Anguished Tear of Alba .

Mistlock Instability [ edit ]

Mistlock Instabilities are special modifiers that introduce additional mechanics or effects onto players and their party's journey through the Fractals of the Mists. These can be anything from incurring simple conditions to insidious extra creature attacks. These effects start at difficulty scale 26. Starting at difficulty scale 51 there are two Mistlock Instabilities active, and at scale 76 there are three Mistlock Instabilities active. Active instabilities can be previewed from the difficulty scale selected or viewed on your effects bar. Mistlock Instabilities will be assigned randomly every day.

The following table describes the possible instabilities for each fractal. Click "show" to view.

The following mistlock instabilities were either renamed, reworked, or removed.

Fractal Masteries [ edit ]

Fractal Attunements is a special mastery track introduced with Heart of Thorns . In addition to providing access to additional rewards and daily achievements, these masteries unlock certain NPCs in the Mistlock Observatory. Through these NPCs players can gain access to Infusion Extraction Devices , special crafting materials and other rewards. These are extremely helpful in completing the higher difficulty scales. In addition, players pursuing the Legendary Backpiece collection will need high fractal mastery to obtain the rare collection items required.

Fractal Potions [ edit ]

There are three types of Fractal Potion available: offensive (increased outgoing damage), defensive (decreased incoming damage) and mobility (increased movement speed) potions. These consumables stack up to five times (Large potions apply all five stacks in one use), and can be used in addition to nourishment and utility consumables. Depending on the Fractal Attunement mastery rank achieved, each potion may provide additional bonuses to vitality , toughness and concentration , respectively.

Infinite Fractal Potions have the same effect as Large, granting five stacks of a standard potion, but can be reapplied infinitely and used to craft the Infinite Mist Omnipotion . The Omnipotion grants all three potion effects simultaneously, lasts twice as long, and is applied automatically upon interacting with a Mistlock Singularity .

Account Augmentations [ edit ]

Account Augmentations is a system of account progression in the form of upgrades that can be purchased from Deroir . Augmentations grant additional rewards for completing a fractal and an account-wide bonus to agony resistance . Each upgrade has four tiers which get progressively more expensive.

Each difficulty scale corresponds with a specific fractal 'island'. Agony is introduced at level 20, and its damage increases with the scale. The table below shows the island for each scale plus the minimum amount of agony resistance required to reduce damage from agony to its minimum of 1% of your total health per tick. (These can be used to match your personal fractal level to find a fractal of suiting difficulty.)

Daily Fractals [ edit ]

There are two types of daily fractals: Tier N and Recommended . In every tier there is at least one fractal for each of the three Tier N Dailies. In each of the three lower tiers (1-25, 26-50, 51-75) there will be one Recommended fractal.

All Daily Fractal reward chests contain a Pristine Fractal Relic and some +1 Agony Infusions .

Tier N Fractals [ edit ]

The Tier N Fractal daily achievements are on a 15-day rotation as indicated on the following table.

Completing a daily fractal will reward players with a chest depending on which tier was completed:

• Tier 1 - Fractal Initiate's Chest
• Tier 2 - Fractal Adept's Chest and all lower tiers
• Tier 3 - Fractal Expert's Chest and all lower tiers
• Tier 4 - Fractal Master's Chest and all lower tiers

Recommended Fractals [ edit ]

Recommended fractals are on a 15-day rotation; one at each tier excluding Master.

Adept and Expert tier Recommended fractals require the Follows Advice mastery . Unlike the Tier N fractals, Recommended fractals are always a single scale.

Completing a Recommended fractal will reward players with a Research Chest depending on the tier. All Research Chests will give a Fractal Research Page and a large Fractal Potion depending on the chest.

• Fractal Expert's Research Chest - Large Mist Offensive Potion

Fractal Research Pages , in conjunction with Grandmaster Marks , can be used to exchange for Ascended chests through BLING-9009 . They can also be used to combine into Fractal Journals , which are used for certain steps of the Ad Infinitum collection and towards acquiring Mist Attunement 1 and Mist Attunement 3 .

Personal fractal level rewards [ edit ].

• Your personal fractal level will increase by 1 each time a fractal difficulty scale is completed at or above your current personal fractal level.
• Completing a fractal awards you up to 3400 karma. Less karma is received if completing a fractal scale closer to your own personal fractal level, although the amount can be increased with karma modifiers .

Purchasable Reward bonuses [ edit ]

Deroir offers permanent reward increases for your account. They include bonus experience, bonus karma, bonus fractal relics and bonus encryptions.

Fractal Relics [ edit ]

Completing a fractal grants a certain amount of fractal relics depending on the scale:

Completing each Fractal from level 1 to 100 results in a total of 1,325 Relics.

Each level of Mist Attunement acquired adds 1 Handful of Fractal Relics (Scales 1-50) or 1 Pouch of Fractal Relics (Scales 51-100), respectively worth an additional 3 and 5 relics each.

Fractal Encryptions [ edit ]

Completing a fractal grants a certain amount of fractal encryptions depending on the scale:

Each level of Mist Attunement acquired increases the number of encryptions dropped by 1.

The Chaos Isles Fractal, Nightmare Fractal and the Deepstone Fractal give 1 extra Fractal Encryption on scales below 40 and 2 extra Fractal Encryption on scales higher than 40. There is also a small chance to get a Fractal Encryption Key instead of one Fractal Encryption .

Experience [ edit ]

Completing fractals awards experience central Tyria mastery experience in the form of Writs of Tyrian Mastery:

Each level of Fractal Empowerment acquired increases the number of writs dropped by 1.

Ascended Crafting Materials [ edit ]

Certain crafting materials can be obtained as random loot from foes in the Fractals of the Mists; unlike the above rewards, these drop from killing ordinary enemies, not for completing fractals. Each has a minimum difficulty scale at which it can appear. As of July 26th 2016, these can also be bought from INFUZ-5959 .

Tips [ edit ]

• Skills that block , absorb or reflect projectiles are very important in the Fractals of the Mists, as almost all fractals have multiple enemies that use ranged attacks and skills and many of them let you deal massive spike damage if you time your reflections properly.
• Skills that provide Stability , Blind or Weakness and skills that remove Conditions and Boons are very useful during many encounters in the Fractals of the Mists. Be prepared to switch skills often before different encounters.
• Skills that remove or corrupt enemy Boons are especially useful in higher-tier fractals with the 'No Pain, No Gain' instability, all the dredge fractals as well as some parts of Aetherblade-themed fractals.
• Crowd control skills such as dazes, stuns and knockbacks help break defiance bars , which give your party a reprieve from boss attacks while boosting your own damage. This technique is critical in some fractals such as Nightmare and Shattered Observatory, where bosses have devastating attacks that can only be stopped by breaking it.
• Some enemies, like Jade Colossi in Solid Ocean, who reflect most projectiles and are best fought with melee or non-projectile based attacks.

• Fractals of the Mists was introduced as part of the Lost Shores release (November 16th, 2012), which also added the first ascended items into the game.
• 3 new fractals and 2 new boss fractals were introduced as part of Fractured release (November 26th 2013). These are Thaumanova Reactor Fractal , Aetherblade Fractal , Molten Furnace Fractal , Captain Mai Trin Boss Fractal and the Molten Boss Fractal . In addition, personal fractal levels were made account-bound rather than character-bound.

• Since Heart of Thorns' release and during the timeframe of Living World Season 3, the Fractals have seen the addition of three new fractals (Chaos Isles, Nightmare and Shattered Observatory) and numerous quality-of-life changes in order to make them more engaging. Major highlights include the streamlining of Agony infusions, revamp of the Mistlock Observatory lobby and reworks to the Cliffside, Swampland, Snowblind and Thaumanova Reactor fractals.

WSU EGGERT FAMILY ORGANIC FARM

The Eggert Family Organic Farm at Washington State University was started in 2003 just west of the airport. One year later, Brad Jaeckel took over management and has been overseeing the farm and teaching students ever since. Brad has worked on farms since the late ‘90s and has his own organic acreage.

After the initial grant funding ended, the farm supported itself selling CSA boxes to the community. Garden space was limited at the old site, so in 2010 the farm moved to 30 acres on Animal Science Road. Currently, the certified organic farm utilizes ten acres. Amenities include four hoop houses, a climate controlled greenhouse, a harvest pavilion, and an irrigation system. The land was originally a cow pasture, so it had been fertilized naturally by manure. Brad said it’s common knowledge that “grasslands make the best soil.”

Brad said the advantage of organic farming is primarily environmental. They are limited in what they can apply to control weeds and pests and use organic materials whenever possible. They grow beneficial flowers, which attract insects. The healthy habitat also attracts advantageous birds like kestrels, owls, and hawks. Organic practices not only reduce pesticide ingestion, they also produce crops that are as high as they can be in nutrients and vitamins. “Our diet is one thing we can control to be healthier. I’m a big believer in health through nutritious food,” Brad said.

The farm grows a variety of vegetables and herbs and has an organic fruit orchard with trees bearing apples, Italian plums, peaches, pears, sweet and sour cherries, and five different nuts. On Fridays from 3 - 6 p.m. people are invited to purchase produce at their farm stand. There is an online ordering system if you want to order ahead. The farm sells a majority of it’s crop to the Moscow Food Co-op. They also sell to the Local Council on Aging, the Community Action Center, the WSU Food Pantry, and donate food to Food Not Bombs.

The farm is named for Chuck and Luanna Eggert, WSU alumni and owners of Pacific Natural Foods. They gave a very generous donation saying, “This gift reflects how much our whole family appreciates what the university is doing to prepare future leaders in the food industry, and in particular, the organic students.”

The WSU Eggert Family Organic Farm is a state-of-the-art teaching and research facility. Brad and his assistant manager, Garrett Waters, are paid employees of the farm, and the majority of work is done by WSU students. Brad teaches the students organic farming methods, and those majoring in Organic and Sustainable Farming are required to work 90 hours on the farm for college credit. The farm is also available for WSU scientists to conduct research. It is beneficial for researchers to have certified organic land for their experiments.

Brad and his wife, Kate, grow organic food on their own small acreage, Orchard Farm. They raise vegetables, along with herbs and flowers for Kate’s business, Orchard Farm Soaps . Their two children are off at school, so this is their first year as empty-nesters. When they are not working, the couple enjoys rafting and kayaking on rivers year-round, being with friends, and hiking on Moscow Mountain.

Georgii Frantsevich Gause was a Russian biologist who proposed the competitive exclusion principle, fundamental to the science of ecology. He would devote most of his later life to the research of antibiotics.

Early life & his Research Career

Gause was born December 27, 1910 in Moscow, Russia to parents Frants Gause, a professor of architecture at Moscow State University, and Galina Gause, an industrial worker at an automotive steel plant. As a boy and into his teenage years, Gause and his extended family took summer vacations to the Caucasus Mountains in southern Russia for months at a time.Although his family was not wealthy, they were allowed these respites because his father, being a government architect, helped to build many structures at the university. It was during these trips to the Caucasus Mountains that Gause grew fond of nature, often chronicling the lives and behavior of several organisms including the Siberian Grasshopper (Aeropus sibiricus). The Russian university system requires a faculty advisor for all undergraduate and graduate students. His chosen advisor for his undergraduate career was Vladimir Alpatov. Alpatov, in the mid-1920s, was very impressed by the work of Raymond Pearl, a U.S. demographer who became well-known through his advocacy of the logistic curve.Alpatov brings back a fascination for American science that is very influential on Gause.Gause argued that field work, with too many variables, could never adequately explain this relationship and only in the simplified laboratory environment, where variables could be controlled, would it be possible to determine precisely how a specific ecological factor influences a population. Eager to pursue this mechanistic direction of study and influenced by his advisor, Gause contacted Pearl to see if the American would take on another Russian student. He applied for a fellowship through the Rockefeller Foundation but was denied, perhaps because he was only 22 years old. He then published The Struggle for Existence in 1934 to improve his chances but he was still denied. Gause earned his BSc at Moscow University in 1931 and his DBiolSc in 1940.

In 1932, Gause published what has become known as the competitive exclusion principle, based on experimental work done with mixed cultures of both yeast and Paramecium species.The principle asserts that no two species with similar ecological niches can coexist in a stable equilibrium, meaning that when two species compete for exactly the same requirements, one will be slightly more efficient than the other and will reproduce at a higher rate as a result. The fate of the less efficient species is local extinction.
