The College of Agriculture has several scholarships available for prospective students as well as undergraduate students currently enrolled in the college. We award approximately $2.5 million in scholarships each year to the undergraduate students in the college, made possible by the generous support of our Alumni and Friends. The College of Agriculture is well known by and invites applications from students who participated in FFA and 4-H.  We encourage applications from students of all backgrounds and experiences who can demonstrate scholastic excellence, civic or citizenship engagement, and character and leadership development.

Scholarships are awarded using a holistic review of information provided on the scholarship application. Scholarships from the College of Agriculture are competitive. Awards are based on criteria, and student credentials and information presented at the time of application and are nonnegotiable. Purdue does not match offers from other institutions and does not consider requests for aid.

• Incoming students must submit their admission application and all required materials by November 1 to maximize consideration for university-wide and college scholarships and to receive an admission update on January 15.
• Transfer students applying to Purdue must submit their admission application and all required materials by April 1 to maximize consideration for university-wide and college scholarships.
• Current Students  must complete the Scholarship Application each year, even for renewable scholarships. 

Only scholarship recipients will receive email notifications. Award notification dates are listed under Scholarship Applications and Important Dates. Students must confirm their enrollment to have scholarship funds added to their accounts. Scholarship funds will be applied to bills 10 business days before the first day of classes per Federal Regulations.

Scholarship Applications and Important Dates

October 1:  The College of Agriculture scholarship application opens. Complete one scholarship application to be considered for college level scholarships. 

November 1:  Deadline for early action admission application. 

December 31:  The updated Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is scheduled to open.

February 15:  Priority date to submit your FAFSA to maximize consideration for need-based scholarships for domestic students. 

February 15:  College of Agriculture's scholarship application deadline for new, incoming students.

April: Notifications will be sent to award recipients who completed an early action admission application and the scholarship application. Students who applied for scholarships but did not submit an early action application will be notified on a rolling basis.  Scholarship letters from the College of Agriculture will be emailed to student's email address that was provided on the scholarship application. Students should view the financial aid tab in  myPurdue for their complete financial aid information.

November:  The College of Agriculture scholarship application opens. Complete one scholarship application to be considered for college level scholarships.

April 1:  Submit your FAFSA by this date to maximize consideration for need-based scholarships for domestic students.

Overview and Selection Criteria : A scholarship sponsored in the memory of Alice A. Blume for incoming undergraduate freshmen in the College of Agriculture at Purdue University. Selections will be made based upon the following factors:

• 1-2 page essay on “How will your involvement in 4-H and your college education impact your future and how will you give back to agriculture or your community?”
• Minimum of five years in 4-H
• Minimum GPA of 3.00

Bratton-Brown Huntington and Montgomery County Agriculture Scholarship

Overview and Selection Criteria : A scholarship for incoming undergraduate freshmen students enrolled in the College of Agriculture at Purdue University. Selections will be made based upon the following factors:

• Residents of Huntington or Montgomery County, Indiana
• Standardized aptitude test results
• Financial need
• High School GPA

Application Information : The Purdue University Division of Financial Aid direct awards this scholarship. There is no separate scholarship application. Applicants must complete the FAFSA.

Breaking New Ground Agriculture Scholarship

Overview and Selection Criteria : A scholarship sponsored by Dr. Bill Field, Professor of Agriculture and Biological Engineering, for incoming undergraduate freshmen or current undergraduate students in the College of Agriculture at Purdue University. This scholarship is for students who have physical disabilities that seriously impair mobility, hearing, vision, and/or use of extremities that cannot be substantially corrected with the use of prescriptive or prosthetic devices. Selections will be made based upon the following factors:

• Preference given to Indiana residents
• Quality of the application

Dairy Farmers Agriculture Scholarship

Overview and Selection Criteria : A scholarship sponsored by Dairy Farmers of America, a cooperative based in Kansas City, Kansas, for undergraduate sophomores, juniors, or seniors in the College of Agriculture at Purdue University. This scholarship is not renewable and cannot be awarded to the same student. Selections will be made based upon the following factors:

• Priority given to students from a Dairy Farmers of America member farm

Active membership within MANRRS and a letter of support from a chapter advisor are eligibility requirements for all scholarships. Charles O. McGaughey Leadership Award

Overview and Selection Criteria : A scholarship established by 1939 Purdue University graduate Charles O. McGaughey to recognize Purdue undergraduate students who have shown outstanding leadership abilities and have demonstrated “an appreciation for basic American values,” including: liberty, the democratic form of government, and a commitment to community service and service to the university. Criteria for determining recipients of this scholarship include leadership, character, and scholarship. The Eli Lilly and Company Make Life Better Scholarship

Overview and Selection Criteria : A scholarship intended to create opportunities for thirty diverse Purdue students over the next three years. Lilly will fund ten scholarships of up to $1,000 each to be awarded each year, starting in the spring of calendar year 2022. The Purdue University Office of the Executive Vice President for Research and Partnerships will select the scholarships on an annual basis by selecting qualified students through the application process outlined below. Scholarships will be awarded for the spring semester and carry over to the following fall semester, provided the student continues to meet eligibility criteria. Scholarships are one-time awards for each student and are not renewable. Selections will be made based upon the following factors:

CATE Grant Support Agriculture students, staff, and faculty may apply for CATE funding to support activities and events with a focus on off- or on-campus leadership conferences, meetings, and workshops. The deadline for Spring funding is February 1. CATE Research Opportunities Grants are available to support undergraduate research. An Agriculture student, on behalf of their faculty mentor can submit a request for funding. If selected, the faculty member receives $500 per student to offset the cost of supllies and expenses incurred during the student's research. You are only eligible for funding once per academic year. The deadline for Spring funding is February 1. Martin Agricultural Research Fund Scholarship   Annually, the Office of Academic Programs awards multiple $2,000 scholarship ($1,000/semester) to students who demonstrate high academic performance, quality research contributions, and a desire for continued learning about research in agriculture. The scholarship is applied towards student's Purdue tuition and fees in the following academic year through the Financial Aid Office. The Office of Agricultural Research and Graduate Education provides an additional $500 to the student's faculty mentor for supplies and expenses incurred during the student's research. These scholarships are very competitive awards with recipients and mentors being selected by the College of Agriculture Administration. Application deadline is April 7, 2023 at 5:00pm for the Fall 2023 - Spring 2024 academic year scholarships.

Who can apply? Graduating high school seniors and current undergrads enrolled in an agriculture or food-related degree program in the U.S. See the full eligibility requirements.

How much money is granted? Awards vary between $1,600 and $3,200. All scholarships include admission to the AFA Leaders Conference (excluding travel).

How are applications evaluated? Recipients will be selected based on their career goals, leadership and community involvement and financial need. Some scholarships will be awarded based on specific criteria, for example, living in a particular community area.

Agriculture Student Scholarships

Harvest some financial aid.

Students interested in pursuing careers in agriculture will find a wide range of scholarship opportunities designed to help them complete their college education. Scholarships for students majoring in agricultural studies are as diverse as the field itself, and cover everything from farming and ranching to agronomy, crop and soil sciences, food sciences, horticulture and plant pathology. A wide range of professional career opportunities are available for agriculture majors, from farm management and animal husbandry to scientific research, natural resources management and food safety administration.

Scholarships for agriculture majors are sponsored by a variety of sources, including Federal and state governments, professional associations, and colleges and universities. Students looking for agriculture scholarships will find that many programs target specific agricultural related disciplines, and my require recipients to be enrolled in a particular course of study or at a partnering college or university.

Government Funded Agriculture Scholarships

The United States Department of Agriculture sponsors a variety of scholarships for students pursuing degrees and careers in agricultural related fields. These programs are open to students across the country, and students can apply through the financial aid offices of their college of choice.

The following examples are a few of the many financial aid programs offered by the USDA:

• The USDA/Tribal Scholars Program provides scholarships to students attending one of the 1994 Land Grant Tribal Colleges or Universities. Scholarships are available for students pursuing degrees in food science, agricultural science and natural resource management. Award amounts vary according to school, course of study, and financial need.
• The William Helms Scholarship Program provides tuition assistance, as well as summer internships, for students pursuing degrees in plant pathology, biology, ecology and entomology. The program is currently undergoing a revision to bring it in line with other USDA supported scholarship programs. Students are encouraged to check the USDA website for updates on the return of William Helms Scholarship Program.
• The USDA Internship Program offers paid work experience for high school graduates and undergraduate college students who are pursuing a degree and a career in an agricultural related field. Interns may work during the summer, fall or spring.

In addition to the programs supported by the USDA, many state governments offer scholarships and grants for resident students pursuing degrees and careers in an agricultural related field. Students from states with large rural populations, and with large farming or ranching communities, should contact their state’s Department of Higher Education Services for information on possible state-sponsored financial aid for agriculture majors.

Agriculture Scholarships Sponsored by Professional Associations

Many national and regional professional associations with close ties to farming, food production and natural resource management, sponsor scholarships for students pursuing degrees in agricultural related disciplines. These scholarship programs typically target a specific discipline or career path that directly relates to the sponsoring organization’s main area of focus. The majority of scholarships supported by professional associations are merit-based, though a few may take a student’s financial status into consideration when making any final award determinations.

The following examples are typical of the scholarship programs supported by professional associatiosn for students pursuing degrees in agriculture and its related fields.

• 1st Farm Credit Services supports America’s farming families with home and business loans, as well as a full range of agribusiness insurance policies. 1st Farm also offers a number of scholarships for students pursuing farm related agricultural degrees at an accredited college or university in the state of Illinois. The First Choice Agricultural Scholarship for High School Seniors  provides $1500 to high school graduates who have been accepted into an agricultural related program at a college or university within the state of Illinois. Awards are determined by academic achievement. 24 scholarships are awarded every year. The 1st  Farm Community College Scholarship awards $500 to eligible students enrolled in an agricultural studies program at a participating Illinois Community College. Awards are determined on the basis of academic achievement and involvement in community service.
• American Agri-Women administers the Daughters of American Agriculture Scholarship for female students between the ages of 18 and 24 who are enrolled in an agricultural related program at an accredited college or university. Applicants must be farmers, ranchers, or the wife or daughter of a farmer or rancher. Awards are determined on the basis of financial need and academic achievement. The one time award amount is $1000.
• The National Potato Council awards one annual $10,000 scholarship to a graduate level student conducting research that will benefit the potato industry. The winner is selected on the basis of academic achievement, leadership potential, and potato-related area of graduate study.
• The United Agribusiness League offers annual scholarships for students studying agriculture-related subjects in the United States, Canada or Mexico. More than $75,000 in scholarships are awarded every year. Eligible applicants must have a minimum 2.5 GPA, and must submit three letters of recommendation from a teacher, employer and volunteer organization. Award amounts vary according to course of study, and college of attendance.

Agriculture Scholarships from Colleges and Universities

Colleges and universities are major sources of scholarships for students pursuing degrees in agriculture and agricultural related disciplines. Schools with sizable agricultural departments, and colleges in states with large rural and farming communities, will have the most extensive scholarship programs for their attending students. Agriculture majors will find that their choice of college may be influenced by the availability of these scholarship programs, and may find it advisable to research a number of different colleges before settling on a final educational destination.

Campus-based scholarships for agriculture majors are primarily merit-based, though some schools will take into account an applicant’s financial need when making final award decisions. The following few examples are typical of the types of scholarships offered by colleges and universities for students pursuing degrees in agriculture and agricultural related disciplines.

• The College of Agriculture, Food Systems and Natural Resources at North Dakota State University offers more than forty general scholarships for its attending students. Scholarships are available for students at every level, from freshman undergraduate to graduate student. The majority of scholarships are merit-based, but there are a few awarded on the basis of financial need. NDSU also offers a variety of program-specific scholarships in areas ranging from Agribusiness and Applied Economics to Plant Pathology and Food Sciences.
• The College of Agricultural Sciences at Oregon State University offers more than 100 general and program-specific scholarships for attending students. Scholarships are available for students enrolled in a variety of agricultural related programs, including Agricultural Business Management, Animal Sciences, Botany, Food Science and Technologies and Rangeland Science. Awards range from $500 to $2000.
• Purdue University’s College of Agriculture offers a wide range of general and program-specific scholarships for enrolled students. More than 100 scholarships and fellowships are awarded every year in Agronomy, Agricultural Economics, Food Science, Botany, and Forestry and Natural Resources Management. More than $1.5 million in scholarship funds are dispersed each year, with individual awards ranging from $1000 to $5000.
• The College of Agricultural Sciences at Penn State University offers its students a number of general scholarships for undergraduate students. Awards are determined on a combination of academic achievement and financial need. Applicants will be required to show proof of financial need to be considered for many of these awards. Penn State also offers a wide range of program-specific scholarships for students majoring in areas as diverse as Animal Sciences, Forest Science, Toxicology, Wildlife and Fisheries Science, and Agroecology. Award amounts vary according to course of study and financial need.

Students majoring in agriculture and its related sciences are exploring the many ways that humans interact with their natural environment. Before I gained admission into college, my father as a peasant farmer took me to his farm every day. Working on the fields where crops like watermelon, yam, cassava, corn, plantain, banana, cocoa, cashew, carrot, and lettuce were planted, I marveled at insects that ravaged these crops. Several tonnes of the harvest was lost mostly from pest infestation on the farm. Therefore, I decided to look for lasting solutions to this long-term negative consequence of pests and other negative influences on crops by studying Crop Production and Protection.

I learnt from my studies and practical experience that the major problem that most poor rural farmers in Nigeria face is the control of numerous pests which makes many of them rely unhealthily and heavily on very expensive chemicals. In fact, from a national survey in that year, a lot of them died as a result of abuse, and misuse of synthetic insecticides. For this reason, my final year project objectives focused on minimizing the infestation of the flea beetles on okra (a staple vegetable crop in Nigeria) using cultural control methods to avoid insecticide use and produce maximum crop yield. This research brought about a better method, apart from chemical insecticides, in minimizing the flea beetle population. Intercropping of okra with kenaf was, therefore, seen as an option that fits well into the non-pesticide management of flea beetles which is beneficial to subsistence farmers who usually practice intercropping, as it would help reduce their cultivation costs to the barest minimum and avoid excessive dependency on synthetic agrochemicals. Despite numerous challenges encountered during this research, these findings were published in an internationally peer-reviewed journal. 

Upon graduation, I decided to work for a year and take loans in order to start a master degree in Crop Production and Protection in 2016. That year, I started with a meagre amount to pay for the part payment only. Coincidentally that year, there was an outbreak of the Fall Armyworm in my country Nigeria that affected over 22 states and other West African countries. I saw a problem that needed an urgent solution, so I focused my research on the study of the ecology and biological control of the fall armyworm. This research was hampered by lack of adequate facilities and the industrial action of non-academic staff union that initiated a total power cut. I lost all my experimental specimen due to this. Despite all these myriads of challenges, I was able to find out an opportunistic entomopathogen (Fusarium tricinctum) against the corn stem borer. 

My passion to explore all the possible solutions to pest problem for sustainable agriculture led me to seek for abroad opportunities where I can lay hands on research tools and facilities. These will arm me with adequate knowledge to come back to Nigeria to establish a channel of food sustainability. One of the most popular scholarship essay questions is “Why do you deserve this scholarship?” Answering such a question can be difficult because you don’t want to sound too needy or greedy. Your essay must stand out from the competition while still being humble and appreciative. Check out these essay writing tips, along with a scholarship essay sample about why I deserve the scholarship.

Tips for writing a “Why do you deserve this scholarship?” essay

Your essay will be unique to your experiences, but there are some general guidelines you should follow. Here are tips for writing a “why I’m deserving scholarship” essay:

• Explain how the scholarship money would contribute to your long-term goals. You’re asking the scholarship committee to invest in your future. They want to ensure their investment goes to a worthy cause. Explain how your education will play a role in your career and overall goals after graduation.
• Focus on the purpose of the scholarship. While writing your essay, keep in mind what the scholarship is for and where it comes from. Tailor your response to the scholarship so it resonates with the review committee.
• Don’t be afraid to promote yourself. This may be your only chance to tell the committee about your achievements. Showing your past success will instill confidence about your future success.
• Use a thesis statement, just like you would with any other essay. You should refer back to the thesis throughout the essay and tie it into the conclusion. If you have trouble creating the thesis at the beginning, write the rest of the essay first. Read through, see what stands out the most, and then write an intro with a cohesive thesis.
• When explaining obstacles in your life, focus on how you overcame them. Show that you’re a problem solver, able to persevere through any situation. You can mention difficulties from your past, but turn the attention to what you did as a result of them.
• Avoid generalizations. Generic statements like “I deserve this because I am a hard worker” aren’t enough. Every applicant is a hard worker, has ‘good grades,’ etc. What makes you different, special and memorable? That should be the topic of your scholarship essay.
• Support your statements with examples. Instead of saying, “I’m a hard worker,” say, “I upheld two jobs while I was in high school to support my family, and I still maintained a 3.75 GPA.” This is no longer a generalization. It is an achievement specific to your life and upbringing.
• Use positive language. Phrases like ‘well-prepared,’ ‘qualified candidate’ and ‘specialized training’ showcase achievements in a positive light. Even in a negative situation, show the positive way you got through it.
• Avoid words like ‘very’ and ‘really.’ You can typically find a one-word substitute that sounds more professional. Very hard turns into difficult. Very good becomes exceptional. Here is an excellent guide for modifiers that replace very .
• Take a one-day break before you edit. Once you have a solid draft written, do not jump straight into editing. Wait a day before looking over your essay. This will let you read the essay with fresh eyes so you can catch inconsistencies, grammar mistakes, and more.

Example 1: Why I deserve this scholarship essay (100 words)

With a 100 word scholarship essay, you need to jump into the thesis as quickly as possible. There is not enough space for a lengthy introduction. Use concise language, and showcase your biggest achievements/goals. You should have enough sentences to break into two small paragraphs, though one may only be two to three sentences.

A 250-word scholarship essay usually consists of 4-5 paragraphs. The introduction can have a short lead-in, but it should arrive at the thesis quickly. The body paragraphs should support the assertion made in the first paragraph (the reason you deserve the scholarship). The conclusion should summarize the essay collectively, and it may include a statement of appreciation.

One of the most debated topics in America is how to provide affordable healthcare to the masses. I believe the answer lies in accessible healthcare providers. Nurse practitioners often go unappreciated and unrecognized for their versatility and value in the medical profession. With this scholarship, I could continue my training to become a nurse practitioner and provide attainable medical services to underserved communities. Growing up in a small Montana farming town, the closest hospital was 45 minutes away. The only local family doctor charged whatever he wanted because he was the sole provider. My parents relied on home remedies to treat any ailment my brother and I developed. This is when my passion for medicine first took form. Minimal medical care was not a concern until my father went to the hospital for severe stomach problems. These were the result of Crohn’s disease, a condition that can be managed with treatment. Because my father had not been to the doctor in years, the flare up was highly aggressive. It took months to get it under control and get him on preventative medication. I decided to go to college to help people like my father. As a nurse practitioner I can practice medicine without charging a fortune for my services. I plan to serve in rural communities where hospitals and doctors are limited or non-existent. I am grateful to be considered for this scholarship opportunity, and should I be selected, I will use it to advance my medical education.

Example 3: Why I deserve this scholarship essay (500 words)

With a 500-word scholarship essay, you have room to tell your story and create an experience for the reader. Use several introductory sentences to lead into your thesis and set the tone for the essay. The body paragraph should flow in a logical manner, most often chronologically. Then the conclusion should re-emphasize the thesis and leave the scholarship committee with something to remember.

The psychologist said that I had a hyperactivity disorder and prescribed medication to suppress my energy. After two years abiding by that treatment, I was re-evaluated and diagnosed with dyslexia. This helped me get the treatment I needed, and I finally made progress in school. Shortly after I learned how to study with dyslexia, my father lost his job. He was the sole breadwinner for the household, and I was soon on the street with my mother and two younger siblings. I got a job in newspaper delivery, one of the few fields that will hire a 12-year-old. My father found odd jobs to bring money to the family, and together we were eventually able to pay for a two-bedroom apartment to live in. I was valedictorian that school year, and I maintained a perfect attendance record. Like my father, I knew I had to do whatever was necessary to succeed and thrive. In high school, I developed an interest for psychology. I noticed patterns in behaviors, both in myself and in the people around me. I asked my child therapist, the one who officially diagnosed me with dyslexia, if I could work at his clinic over the summers. He allowed me to intern at his counseling center my junior and senior year, and I gained valuable insight into the business side of psychology. I am now entering the second year of my psychology degree. I plan to complete my bachelor’s degree and earn a Doctorate of Neuropsychology in the years that follow. My focus is on psychological testing, specifically for children with autism or learning disabilities. I spent years struggling in school because of a preventable misdiagnosis.  I want to ensure that other children do not face the same struggles in their future. Why do I deserve this scholarship? Because I have the passion and determination to become a trusted member of the psychological community. India largely depends on the agriculture sector. Besides, agriculture is not just a mean of livelihood but a way of living life in India. Moreover, the government is continuously making efforts to develop this sector as the whole nation depends on it for food.

For thousands of years, we are practicing agriculture but still, it remained underdeveloped for a long time. Moreover, after independence, we use to import food grains from other countries to fulfill our demand. But, after the green revolution, we become self-sufficient and started exporting our surplus to other countries.

Besides, these earlier we use to depend completely on monsoon for the cultivation of food grains but now we have constructed dams, canals, tube-wells, and pump-sets. Also, we now have a better variety of fertilizers, pesticides, and seeds, which help us to grow more food in comparison to what we produce during old times.

With the advancement of technology, advanced equipment, better irrigation facility and the specialized knowledge of agriculture started improving.

Furthermore, our agriculture sector has grown stronger than many countries and we are the largest exporter of many food grains.

Significance of Agriculture

It is not wrong to say that the food we eat is the gift of agriculture activities and Indian farmers who work their sweat to provide us this food.

In addition, the agricultural sector is one of the major contributors to Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and national income of the country.

Moreover, most of the chemical fertilizers and pesticides contaminate the land as well as water bodies nearby. Ultimately it leads to topsoil depletion and contamination of groundwater.

In conclusion, Agriculture has given so much to society. But it has its own pros and cons that we can’t overlook. Furthermore, the government is doing his every bit to help in the growth and development of agriculture; still, it needs to do something for the negative impacts of agriculture. To save the environment and the people involved in it.

Three high school students receive scholarships from Kansas Department of Insurance

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - Three high school students received scholarships for a financial literacy essay contest from the Kansas Department of Insurance.

Kansas Insurance Commissioner Vicki Schmidt announced on Thursday, May 9, the overall winner of the financial literacy essay contest sponsored by the Securities Division of the Kansas Department of Insurance.

According to the Kansas Department of Insurance , earlier this year, the Department granted $10,000 each to three organizations for a financial literacy essay contest. Jobs for America’s Graduates Kansas (JAG-K), Junior Achievement of Kansas and the Kansas Council for Economic Education each entered a selection of essays from Kansas students who participated in their financial literacy programs offered in over 200 high schools across Kansas. The students with the top three essays from each organization were awarded a share of $10,000 in scholarships. The first-place essay from each organization then advanced to compete for an overall contest winner and a share of an additional $10,000.

The contest finalists and their awards are:

• 1st Place: $5000 – Morgan Allen, (Kansas Council for Economic Education), Centralia High School
• 2nd Place: $3000 – Maggie Lesmeister, (Junior Achievement of Kansas), Seaman High School
• 3rd Place: $2,000 – Steven Nguyen, (Jobs for America’s Graduates Kansas), Wichita Southeast High School

“This year’s winners demonstrated the ability to make an investment plan that builds upon their personal goals while evaluating risk and the threat of fraud,” said Schmidt. “Congratulations to all the winners this year, and I encourage them to apply their financial knowledge as they further their education.”

Kansas Department of Insurance said the winning students receive their scholarships in addition to the $5,000 scholarship they won in the first round of the contest. The students receive the award money in the form of a 529 savings account to use for the advancement of their education.
