  • FAQs on Speech on the Internet

The internet has become an indispensable part of everyday life. The internet was first invented by Bob Kahn and Vint Cerf . While internet has many advantages, it does have disadvantages too. The following section speaks about the advantages of the internet.

  • Free material availability – Many students can’t afford expensive books, so the internet serves as the best way for them to avail free study materials. The internet gives scope to many kids to go through various study materials and choose from a wide range of information.
  • Facilitates online learning – With the COVID-19, study and work became completely online. The availability of the internet is what allowed students to attend classes, sitting at their homes. This made learning possible even in the midst of the pandemic.
  • Connects people from far and wide – Many of our family members and friends stay at different places and with the internet, it has become easy for us to catch up with them through video calls or emails. Before this, people had to pay a huge amount of money to connect with their beloved ones who were living far away from them.
  • Start a business – Many of you might have heard about online business. If one is planning to start a small business, one can easily do so with the internet.

A good speech on the internet will include both advantages and disadvantages. You already what the advantages are; now, let us look at some of the disadvantages of the internet.

  • Overuse – One of the disadvantages is overuse. The internet has always attracted more and more people from the time of its existence. The pandemic just elevated this situation. With the introduction of online classes, students got to use their phones for a longer time, which in turn, increased their screen hours. This is true in the case of adults as well.
  • Loss of creativity and imagination – With the internet giving answers to every question people have and giving ideas for any topic, the creative and imaginative intellect of children and adults alike have drastically dropped. Most often, it is not being used at all.

The internet has, for sure, opened doors to multiple possibilities. It has a lot that can teach you about anything and everything under the sun. It is in the hands of the users to use it wisely and beneficially, without causing any harm to the others.

The Internet Is Changing the English Language. Is That a Good Thing?

Because Internet offers a history of the web, an introduction to linguistics and a survey of the most fascinating research from her field.

F or more than 600 years, English speakers used because as a conjunction meaning “for the reason that,” dutifully following it with a full clause of explanation (or at least the word of ). Then, a few years ago, this old standby suddenly began bursting with new life, as people started using it to form terse, cheeky rationales in a manner that defied all grammatical decorum: How do you know climate change is real? “Because science.” Why are you sleepy? “Because burrito.” Academics went aflutter, debating whether because had evolved into a preposition and which types of nouns fit this newfangled construction. But there was little disagreement on the driving force behind the change.

The title of Gretchen McCulloch’s new book, Because Internet: Understanding the New Rules of Language , is a homage to this kind of linguistic metamorphosis — evolution made possible by the ascendance of the web and the unprecedented explosion of informal writing that has come with it. Her aim is to explain how the Internet has shaped language, as billions of people have become authors and found ways to type out the flirtations ( 😘) and frustrations (aklefj;awkjfdsafjka!!!) and quotidian blurghs that for centuries existed only as informal speech.

McCulloch is an Internet linguist (yes, that is a real job), and her book about Internet language is, fittingly, a mash-up drawn from academic and Internet cultures. She breaks down concepts like diglossia — an instance when two varieties of a language are spoken in the same community — as she casually deploys online speak like “meatspace” (the physical world, opposite to cyberspace). In some measure, Because Internet offers a history of the web, an introduction to linguistics and a survey of the most fascinating research from her field, including a study that took advantage of geotags on social media to show how new slang words spread from place to place. Her opus is also a well-researched retort to grumpy grammarians who think technology is turning kids into lazy, inarticulate drivelers. On the contrary, she argues, it’s making us more creative in our writing than ever before.

McCulloch is a scholar , pundit and podcaster who frequently appears in the media to explain whatever That New Thing on the Internet means. She is also a pillar of the online community known as Linguist Twitter. In a recent bit of research on that platform, she put up a poll, asking, “What does :P mean to you?” Of the more than 1,100 people who responded, 66% said the tongue-out emoticon was flirtatious or cutesy, 8% said it conveyed exasperation, and 20% said it checks both boxes. Some noted that they use it for other purposes, like acknowledging they’ve made a corny “dad joke.” Such are the “exquisite layers of social nuance” that McCulloch demystifies throughout her book as she analyzes the linguistic impact of chat rooms, text messages, social networks and memes.

The formal, unemotional writing we were all taught in the classroom simply won’t do in places designed for virtual mingling, McCulloch explains. And she breaks down the many ways we’ve managed to use keyboards to restore the dynamism of face-to-face interaction. For a start: We tap all caps when we feel LIKE SHOUTING. We utilize emojis when we need to gesture, replacing those extended hands and arched eyebrows that can crystallize the meaning of vague words. We use the abbreviation lol not just to mean “laughing out loud” but also to diffuse slightly awkward situations or to offer empathy. And we lengthen words to show just how much we feeeeeeeeel.

For those well versed in the ways of the web, Because Internet will offer insight into how we are, often unwittingly, signaling our identity through the language we use online each day. For those who aren’t familiar with lolcats, the book can serve as something of a guide. The only audience McCulloch doesn’t cater to are the gripers who believe English is a precious urn to be maintained rather than, as she puts it, a splendidly “living, moving” thing.

Speech On Internet - 10 Lines, Short and Long Speech

The Internet is regarded as one of the greatest human inventions. The Internet has changed the way people work and live for the better. It assisted us in reducing distance, breaking down all human-made barriers, and bringing the world to our fingertips. The Internet has become a worldwide medium.

10- Lines Speech On The Internet

The Internet is a network of networks that connects everyone via satellite, telephone lines, and optical fibre connections.

With a single click, you can access a world of information.

The Internet connects millions of computers to the worldwide electronic community.

The Internet assists us in gathering information by storing it on servers known as websites.

We may readily read books online by visiting libraries.

The Internet is in charge of delivering information to our doorstep. All we need is a phone or a laptop with Internet access.

With the assistance of the Internet, any financial transactions and banking can be sent and received.

But, for all of its virtues, the Internet has its drawbacks. Data and personal information leakage are one of the drawbacks.

Malicious information on social media can cause disruptions.

Online financial fraud is a common occurrence that we are unaware of.

Speech On Internet - 10 Lines, Short and Long Speech

Short Speech On the Internet

Nobody among us is unfamiliar with the Internet. It was invented 40 years ago by Robert E. Kahn and Vint Cerf and was initially used to send emails in the United States. Today, the world has 3.5 billion users, and you are one of them. When it comes to internet usage, it has yet to be explored.

How Internet Has Changed The World

We can now book our trip tickets online, eliminating the need to stand in line. We can shop from many possibilities while sitting at home; we don't need to go to the market. We can also seek doctors' advice, who are only a click away. Even students nowadays rely only on online resources to learn. Not only that, but the Internet has entirely revolutionised the way we used to live. You will all agree that it has made our lives easier and more comfortable.

We all know, however, that a coin has two sides, one good and one terrible. Illegal activities, fraud, and cybercrime are expanding daily. People are spending time on the Internet rather than using it productively. People have begun to live a virtual life without awareness of the real world. Children spend more time playing online games than participating in physical activities.

The Internet is one of humanity's greatest inventions that can be used for the global development of humankind.

Long Speech On the Internet

The Internet has connected the world and that distance between people is no longer an issue. The Internet is one of the most important aspects of technological progress occurring all around the world. It is transforming how people work, educate themselves, travel, and entertain themselves, and it is easily accessible to many people.

The Internet's function is to connect two or more gadget screens that may communicate via signals, allowing information to be transmitted through this medium. The Internet was initially used forty years ago in the United States of America. Robert E. Kahn and Vint Cerf created the Internet. Initially, the Internet was used to send emails between two computers, but it has already successfully touched every corner of the globe.

Advantages Of Internet

The Internet has numerous benefits and has proven to be a valuable contribution to humankind's technological advancement.

It allows users to connect with their relatives even if they are far away, and you can instantly connect with them via chats, video conferencing, and emails.

It allows users to collect various types of information and offers moving services such as watching movies, playing games, and listening to music.

Online banking, airline ticket booking, shopping, and other services are among the benefits of the Internet.

Disadvantages Of Internet

The use of the Internet for fraud and illicit purposes is rising daily.

The rate of cybercrime is rapidly increasing, eroding people's trust in the Internet, primarily due to the misuse of the Internet.

People attack others on social networking sites based on caste, colour, race, attractiveness, etc. One concern parents encounter is their children being addicted to computer gaming, avoiding schoolwork, and avoiding outside activities.

How To Be Careful Over The Internet

The Internet plays an essential role in people's daily lives, and it is nearly impossible for us to go a day without it. So, even though we know the Internet's detrimental effects, we cannot avoid it. So, we can set a time limit for its use, primarily for minors.

Parents and teachers must monitor and guide children on proper Internet usage. Educating and alerting people about online fraud and cybercrime is part of our responsibilities, and there are severe repercussions for internet fraud. As a result, with adequate understanding and prudence, the Internet can be a blessing to human society's growth.

Around 2006, I was 5, and my mum showed me Google for the first time. She connected to the Internet and demonstrated what Google is. I was delighted and enthusiastic about the unlimited possibilities, but Google didn't have any "Did you mean" tabs back then, and my spelling was terrible, so I had to ask my mother to search for me. I recall the first thing I asked my Mom to Google was "How are Diamonds formed?" and forcing her to read it to me. That was my first experience when I encountered the Internet.

Speech on Internet 500 Words In English

Below we have provided a speech on Internet, written in easy and simple words for class 7, 8, 9 and 10 school students.

Good morning to everyone present over here. Today I am here to deliver my speech on the internet. John Stewart has rightly said that “ The internet is just a world passing notes around a classroom.”

The internet has brought the world too close today; the physical distance is no more a real distance between anyone. The internet has made our lives easy & comfortable. Most advances in technologies are attributed to the internet in today’s world. It is one of the most significant inventions which has completely changed the way we live.

Internet is a network facility which helps in sharing information. It was invented 40 years back by Robert E. Kahn and Vint Cerf for sending emails. It has transformed a lot in last with time. We all use internet today, let it be on our mobile phones, computers or laptops for different purposes. Many of us may be using it for office work, learning, some for shopping, playing & many more.

Restaurants, malls, transportation, and banking everywhere the internet is playing a significant role. It is an excellent source of knowledge & valuable resources for learning. The primary entertainment sources for today’s world is internet. Let it be music, song, dance, series or movie everything is available just a click away. We can connect to our loved ones, a thousand kilometres away just by doing a video call. For many internet has become the source of income, people have started earning by writing blogs, etc. The usage of internet is uncountable.

Though internet is an excellent servant, it does have some ill effects. Misuse of information & fraud is increasing day by day. Cybercrimes have become a significant concern which is getting monitored closely. The influence of social media is so hyped among people that people are ready to do anything for getting famous. People are unnecessarily spending time which has created problems in their social lives. Believing internet blindly has become a common practice which has resulted in the circulation of fake news.

We all cannot deny that the internet has become a part of our life. It is not easy to spend a day without the internet. So we all need to maintain the balance between the positive & negative impacts of the internet. Judicious use with proper precautions will prove the internet to be a boon for humanity. Let us join hands & pledge to use the greatest invention of time for transforming the world in the right way.

A very welcome to all of you to the session of discussion on the internet. Internet is not new to anyone us. It was invented 40 years back by Robert E. Kahn and Vint Cerf with its very first use in the United States to send emails. Today there are 3.5 billion users in the world & you are one of them. Talking about the usage of the internet, it has left no fields untouched. Today we can book our travelling tickets online; we need not make a queue. We can shop sitting at home from a variety of options; we need not step out to market.

We can also take the consultation of doctors, which is just a click away. We do not wait anymore to meet our near & dear ones; we connect to them through video calls. Getting bored need not wait for a TV program; we have plenty of options available online. Even today, people are searching for their soulmates on the internet. Even students are nowadays dependent only on online sources for learning. Not only these, internet has completely transformed the life we once lived in. You all will agree that it has made our life simpler & more comfortable for us.

However, we all know that a coin has two sides, one good & bad. Till now, I only highlighted the best part of the internet. Let me tell you the internet can have numerous negative impacts if we do not use it cautiously. The illegal works, fraud or we can say cyber crimes are increasing day by day. People are wasting time on internet instead of using the valuable time. People have started living virtual life with no understanding of the world outside. Children are spending more time playing online games instead of any physical activities.

All these issues are leading us to a bigger problem. We all being aware of the pros & cons of usage of the internet and must be alert enough to use it in the right way. It is one of the greatest inventions of humanity which can be solely used for the development of the people globally. Long and Short Speech on Internet

Speech on internet – sample 1.

Warm Greetings Ladies and Gentleman!

As you know that today’s seminar is conducted to discuss various aspects of internet – the benefits and loss it entails. I, as the host of today’s seminar, welcome you all to this event and sincerely hope to make this seminar a fruitful one for everyone present here by our active participation. However, before we initiate the discuss round, I would like to deliver a brief speech on internet so as to warm up the session for my audience and in the hope to add up to your existing knowledge.

The definition of internet is not same for everyone and entails different meanings for different people. It is mainly because of the fact that it offers a range of applications along with multitudinous opportunities for trade & commerce. In other words, internet is an acronym for the internetwork system, i.e. a network of computers.

Did you know that it is in the year 1969 that the US Defence Department with the help of their Advanced Research Project Agency also called as ARPA developed a system of computer networks through the use of telephone lines and called it ARPANet, which means the seed of internet? The ARPANet enabled the officials to access various military personnel and academicians using their sites situated at multiple places.

Then, with the gradual development in networking technology and the ease of access to a range of information on the ARPANet, the officials connected more and more computers to the source. This way a significant bare minimum mass for the internet was achieved. In the year 1990, ARPANet was brought to an end and the internet itself emerged as the most powerful and overwhelming force for communication to reckon with.

Also, let me share with you a few more basic facts about internet. The architecture of internet consists of 3 basic layers, viz. Internet Backbone, Providers of Internet Service and lastly the end user. The Internet backbones are considered networks with a really high speed connected with each other and he providers of internet services are linked to any of the backbone having transfer lines with a high speed data. The end user more often reaches out to the internet service provider in order to access the internet.

This goes without saying that internet has made everything so easy for us and we can do various things at the same time while being at one place, i.e. right from paying bills to buying merchandizes to finding jobs, etc. It surely saves our lot of time and efforts and enables us to direct our energy in some other work.

Having said that, I would also like to mention that whereas on one hand internet has various advantages to offer, it on the other hand has a major loophole too, i.e. it impacts our health quite a lot. As one continues to work on it every day and there is hardly any physical activity – your body starts breeding diseases thereby affecting your quality of life.

I hope my speech will help you in strengthening your view points and widening your perspectives. Now, you as an audience are requested to put forth your opinion and initiate the discussion phase.

Speech on Internet –Sample 2

Hon’ble Principal, Vice Principal, My Fellow Colleagues and Dear Students – Good Morning all!

As morning assembly has come to a close, our managing committee has decided to select a topic every alternate day and deliver a speech on the same so that our students can become socially more aware and sound. So today the speech topic that has been chosen is Internet and I, your sociology teacher, is going to deliver a speech on the same. Hope you will find it useful and enlightening and you can even question or express your opinion too unhesitatingly in the end.

To begin with, I would like say that internet has evolved as a large-scale system of interconnected network of computers, which utilizes the usual Internet protocol suite (also called as TCP/IP even though not every application makes use of TCP) in order to serve the needs of billions of people globally. It is a wide web of network that comprises millions of public, private, business, academic as well as government networks starting from local to a global platform being connected with a wide array of wireless, electronic and optical networking technologies. No doubt, on internet you can search for an extensive array of information resources as well as services, like the inter-connected hypertext pages on the World Wide Web (WWW) and the infrastructure to maintain email accounts.

As internet has become relatively economical and is of course fast – it is providing significant benefits to the organizations and the students across the world as having an internet connection is quite easy these days. The two most important uses of internet are information and communication. Information can be modified or updated at any point in time and as much as possible, which opens up the scope of better learning and understanding for the masses.

However, unfortunately the today’s generation especially our students have become so addicted to this technology that they are diverting from their educational goals. Whole day chatting with friends, internet surfing, browsing occupies their time and in the end they hardly have any time left for their studies. Even worst, this habit makes them irregular with their studies and they lose their capacity to lead an organized life, due to which the falling grades of those students can be observed. After conducting the research and study about the way students consume internet data and use social networking sites, the experts have opined that the results are certainly not favorable.

Social networks like Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, etc have become the major roadblocks in the way of students’ educational goals. One of the serious drawbacks of this technology is that there is no method to curb it once a student has come to a university level of studies. But schools can still play a major role in guiding the students and helping them realize their value of time and time management skills.

On the flip side, the internet is vast reservoir of information and thus can be used by the students for completing their projects and assignments. On internet, one can certainly find all the possible information or knowledge known to humanity. So easily browse through the internet for the required information and study them whenever the need arises.

Towards the end, I want to say that technology becomes a boon, if used rightfully or else destroy the humanity if used the other way. So make the best use of it and reap the fruits of its benefits.

Now, children you can raise your hands and share your thoughts with us one by one.

Speech on Internet – Sample 3

Good Morning Respected Principal, Respected Teachers and My Dear Students!

Today, this meeting has been organized in our institution for the discussion upon the different aspects of the internet and I, as a manager of this institution, want to say a few words on internet describing its various aspects because it becomes very important these days to learn about the internet. Internet is one of the biggest needs of our today’s lifestyle. The internet is a system of sets of computer networks that communicates using internet protocol (IP) and that use Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) to identify the best path to route those communication.

The origins of internet can be traced back to research commissioned by the United States federal government in the 1960s to build strong and fault-tolerant communication via computer networks. The beginning of the transition to the modern Internet and generated rapid growth as institutional, personal, and mobile computers were connected to the network from the early 1990s. By the late 2000s, the services of the internet had been blended into almost every part of our life. The traditional communication networks and media such as newspapers, paper mail, television etc are getting redefined and replaced by new technologies such as email, digital newspapers, online music, etc.

Print publishing are getting converted into blogging, web feeds and online news aggregators through the adaptation of website technology. There are many new forms of personal interactions by instant messaging, internet forums and social networking websites. The trend of online shopping has grown significantly due to widened range and convenience. Business and financial services on the internet helps in spreading chains among the entire industries around the world.

World-Wide-Web (WWW) is its biggest services. It is used by billions of people all around the world. The software of WWW (World Wide Web) such as Microsoft’s internet explorer/ edge, Mozilla fire fox, opera, apple’s safari and Google chrome provides users the facility to navigate from one web page to another via hyperlinks embedded in the documents. The WWW (World Wide Web) has decentralized the information on an enormous level.

With many advantages, internet has some of its disadvantages also. The internet can be dangerous in some aspects. Sometimes, people use it to spread rumors or other people’s secrets or dangerously bad advice. Sometimes, other strange people can also read your information if it is send through the internet. For instance, Facebook has some problems with its privacy settings. A person can post anything on a website, but this could be a bad idea unless the person is very sure of what he is doing. There is a way to check for a secure website is to make sure that the URL starts with https:// instead of https://. This means that it is secured and other people cannot read the information while it is being sent. In the end it is in our hands whether to use internet in a positive manner or in a negative manner.

At this end, I would like to conclude my speech and I hope that it will help you to understand the different aspects of the internet.

Thank you and I wish you all a great day ahead!

Speech on Internet – Sample 4

Respected Principal, Respected Teachers and My Dear Friends!

I am Nandani of XII standard and I am here today in front of you to deliver a speech on Internet as this assembly is organized for the purpose of spreading awareness among young generation about internet. Internet has become an important part of our today’s life and especially for the young generation. The biggest world-wide communication network today is the internet. The internet is the global system of the set of computer networks that communicate using the internet protocol (IP).

The internet was developed by the “United States Department of Defence Advance Research Projects Agency” (DARPA) which is in the United States. The first ever connection was known as the ARPANET and it was connected on October 1969. The most popular service of the internet is the World Wide Web (WWW) and it was created at CERN in Switzerland in 1990 by a British (UK) man named Tim Berners-Lee. The World Wide Web is the most used service on the internet and it is also known as the “Web”. It contains websites that includes blogs and wikis in it. Everybody can read these web pages and it can be seen by anyone on the internet unless it requires a password.

The internet has no centralized government itself for the technological implementation or for the access and usage. Each and every authorized network has to set its own policy.

In today’s world, internet is used for many purposes such as for sending electronic mails, online chat through many applications, to transfer file from one device to another and we can find infinite information on infinite topics. The most biggest and important use of internet is to send and receive e-mails. E-mail is secure and private and it goes from one user to another. Instant messaging applications or websites such as AIM or ICQ allows more than two people for chat to each other and it is much faster.

Many governments around the world have a bad thinking for internet and thus, block all or a part of it. For instance, the government of the China thinks that Wikipedia is not good and thus many times in this country people cannot read or add something to it. Sometimes, parents block some parts of the internet which are not good for their children to see. Many devices or mostly devices contain a parental control system in it. Many countries have blocked the whole internet usage such as in North Korea and Myanmar.

Some websites are designed to fool people for downloading device damaging viruses or may contain the system through which someone could spy. E-mail can also be dangerous as someone could send harmful viruses etc through an attachment. Many stalkers use internet chat rooms to prey on others. On the internet many websites contains some contents that are might be offensive for many users. Sometimes, on the internet, people got tricked by many fraud people to send them money or personal data.

It just need awareness and a little knowledge to surf safely on internet and we should use it wisely.

On this note, I would like to conclude my speech and hope that it will provide you a clear vision about internet.

Thank you and have a nice day!

While these dire predictions had some, slim basis in fact (you’ve probably heard someone say “lol” aloud in place of actually laughing), for the most part they’ve failed to come true. Looking at the big picture, global literacy rates continue to rise. It’s tricky to see whether literacy rates might correlate with internet use; internet use is usually higher in wealthier countries, and wealthier countries usually have higher literacy rates. Yes, you’ll encounter many more error-ridden articles online than you’d be likely to in print media. But on the other hand, you encounter many more articles online full stop, from a vastly more diverse range of people who in many cases, had they lived a hundred years ago, would never have learned to write at all, let alone being able to write, publish and have their thoughts read by hundreds or thousands – misplaced commas and all. Yet the internet has wrought significant changes on our use of the English language – most of them neither good nor bad, merely different, as every major new technology also has its impact. In this article, we look at some of the key ways that the internet has changed the way we speak and write, both online and offline.

1. We’ve added thousands of words of new vocabulary

Looking at early internet vocabulary provides a fascinating insight into how quickly new words can be picked up and then abandoned. Many of these terms that sprung up and then disappeared less than ten years later have simply become outdated.

mobile-phone-1093358_640

For instance, there’s the weird telegraphese of internet and text acronyms and abbreviations. Do you recognise or understand any of these: 4COL, AYSOS, GHM, N2MJCHBU, RAEBNC, SWIS or WACI? It’s the kind of thing that you might be pushed to write if each text costs you 30p to send, or you don’t want to take up too much space on a tiny mobile phone screen. But now you would just write it out: for crying out loud; are you stupid or something?; god help me; not too much just chilling how about you?; read and enjoyed but no comment; see what I’m saying; what a cool idea. Faced with a list of incomprehensible abbreviations like the one above, it’s easy to see why some people feared that human literacy was doomed and we were returning to a world of inarticulate pictograms. But as the technology improved and abbreviations began to impede communication rather than facilitate it, we abandoned the acronyms. TYL. (Thank you Lord – or text you later, depending on context). The forward march of technology has pushed out other terms as well. We don’t talk about being “stuck in blue bar land”; Internet Explorer and its blue loading bar has been consigned to the dustbin of failed browser history. Similarly, being a “bandwidth hog” is no longer the problem it once was. The diversification of the internet killed off a few more words: feel the disdain of the nerd in terms like “meatspace” and “dead tree edition”, that couldn’t endure once the internet was just as likely to be used by someone’s grandma as any l33t h4xx0rz (that’s “elite hackers”, for anyone who doesn’t speak early-90s nerd slang).

"Are my eyebrows on fleek today?"

Where old internet slang has fallen out of favour, new slang has appeared. If you’re reading this in 2016, you probably know most of the terms on this list: YOLO (the internet abbreviation is not completely dead!), rickrolling, basic, throwing shade, I can’t even, bae, fleek, hashtag, salty, catfish, selfie. But if it’s 2030 and this article is still online, you might want to google the concept of “rickrolling” and feel amazed at the kind of things your parents found amusing. It’s important to remember that a lot of internet vocabulary belongs to the category of slang or jargon; it serves a particular purpose within an in-group, like professional slang . Hand-wringing articles appear when people from outside that in-group try to understand it, but that was never the purpose for which that vocabulary developed.

2. We’re getting to grips with dialects we otherwise wouldn’t have encountered

We’ve written before about how much the English language is changing , and one of the key drivers of that change is the number of people who speak English as a second, third or even fourth language. English has about 400 million native speakers, but vastly more non-native speakers – perhaps as many as two billion, depending on how loosely you want to define being an English speaker. It’s a harder question than you might realise: how fluent does someone have to be to count as an English speaker? Do they need to be able to string together a few sentences, or hold a decent conversation? Do dialects and creoles count? What if they are speaking something that is essentially English, but that very few native English speakers can understand? These questions ultimately extend beyond language, and start to raise political questions as well; the use of language by one speaker might be considered as an error, while another speaker might be considered to be using a dialect. The internet means that English speakers of whichever background are encountering more varieties of English than they might ever have before. Take someone in Liverpool, who a hundred years ago might have heard Liverpudlian dialects and standard English, and nothing else. But online, that person today might encounter varieties of English from all across the world. Taking a look through Buzzfeed, for instance, might throw up some articles from Buzzfeed India in which you’ll encounter words like “funner”; incorrect in standard English, but fine in Indian English.

"I'd always considered Thomas to be a bit basic, but this birthday party is lit"

Another dialect that you might encounter online is African-American Vernacular English (usually shortened to AAVE). A lot of the internet buzzwords of 2016 derive directly from AAVE. Here’s a short list: lit (e.g. “the party is lit” – it’s great), bae (boyfriend/girlfriend etc.), woke (aware of political realities), on fleek (flawlessly styled), shade (specifically “throwing shade” – delivering a put-down, usually to someone who deserves it), squad (your friends), realness (as the word implies, being authentic), slay (to succeed in something really difficult) and basic (enjoying unsophisticated things). Some of these words have entered if not standard English, then the slang of standard English speakers, through other forms of popular culture; for instance, Beyoncé’s ‘Formation’ is in considerable part responsible for non-AAVE speakers using “slay”. But many of these words have appeared through their usage on the internet by AAVE speakers, where they have been borrowed by people who may otherwise have had no experience of AAVE. In particular, people who are effectively bilingual in AAVE and standard English might borrow AAVE vocabulary if it seems to fit their meaning better when speaking standard English. Standard English has always been inclined to borrow from other languages and dialects, and their use on the internet makes the whole process quicker and easier.

3. We’re creating brand-new dialects for online communities

For people who are not routinely on Tumblr, having a quick browse of it can be profoundly confusing. Of all online communities, Tumblr is possibly the one that has gone furthest towards having its own dialect that is incomprehensible to outsiders. There are even online guides into “how to speak Tumblr”. Here’s a Tumblr paragraph: I CANT EVEN what is this life ruiner. having ALL THE FEELS akdfhakdghoghsgds what is air Or in other words, the writer is extremely excited by someone. What’s fascinating about this is that none of the phrases above are borrowed from other dialects, except perhaps the keyboard smash – akdfhakdghoghsgds – but that can denote anger elsewhere, while on Tumblr it usually means wild, flailing excitement. Some of the terms might have come from pre-Tumblr online communities (especially LiveJournal) but what you can effectively see is the migration of a single online tribe, from a variety of forums to LiveJournal to Tumblr, taking their language with them and adapting it along the way.

FTFY

Tumblr’s dialect is among the most distinctive, but it’s not the only online dialect. There’s the snippy, to-the-point use of language on Twitter, where users have honed the art of getting to the point in 140 characters. Reddit also has its own vocabulary, though there much of it is borrowed from previous forums, and it shows: the use of abbreviations still thrives on Reddit despite being gone from most of the rest of the internet, as its users tell each other TL;DR (too long; didn’t read), TIL (today I learned), FTFY (fixed that for you) and all the other forum-specific terms of cross-posting, upvoting, downvoting and so on and so forth. Of course, not all of these users stick solely to one community. While there are differences of demographics (for instance, Tumblr is female-dominated, while more men use Reddit), there is considerable overlap between members of different communities, and that means that there are a good few people out there who are effectively bilingual in different online dialects: switching effortlessly from Tumblrese to Reddit-speak as required. This means that the people on Tumblr who write as if they don’t entirely understand how the shift key works and the people who Reddit who think it’s still 1996 can presumably also switch into standard English without borrowing anything from their online usage of language unless it feels appropriate. In other words, standard English ends up not damaged, but where need be, enhanced.

4. We’re learning new grammar rather than losing our ability to speak English

How do cats and dogs speak? If you ask a toddler, you’ll probably get a conventional answer along the lines of “cats go miaow, dogs go woof” or something similar. If, however, you ask an internet user, you’ll naturally know that cats (or at least lolcatz) are “in ur article and speakz lyk dis”. And you’ll know that dogs (or at least doge), as we’ve discussed before , speak “much words, very English, so article. Wow.” The thing about writing these so that they sound ‘correct’ within the rules of the meme is that it takes a reasonably advanced knowledge of English spelling and grammar. Both are deliberately incorrect along different lines, and you can’t be deliberately incorrect unless you already know what the correct formulation is.

jst hangin heer til caturday

Lolcatz use old-school internet abbreviations and misspellings such as “ur” for “your”, replace “s” with “z” and confuse the third-person singular with the first-person singular (so “I has” not the correct “I have). Doge, on the other hand, take adjectives and adverbs and get them the wrong way around. “Much” is a measure of uncountable quantity (“too much milk”) that in writing doge is used as a measure of countable quantities (“much words”, which should correctly be “many words”). What’s fascinating about this is that the difference between countable and uncountable nouns is a famously tricky aspect of the English language. Very few supermarket checkouts, for instance, are labelled correctly as “five items or fewer” (because the items are clearly countable, and fewer refers to countable quantities) but instead as “five items or less” (which is as incorrect as saying “much items”; it’s using an uncountable term for a countable quantity). In other words, in order to construct a doge meme, you have to understand English at a higher level than many native speakers have achieved, even if you don’t realise that’s what you’re doing.

Such language. Many fluent. Wow.

When people are bilingual – especially when they speak the standard variation of a language and then a dialect, creole or a language that is seen as inferior – there have long been concerns that the second language or dialect needs to be suppressed, or they’ll never learn the first one properly. Much the same instinct can be seen with the concerns about what the internet is doing to the English language; what if a generation grow up able only to speak lolcat, and not to read Shakespeare?! But a couple of decades of widespread internet access have demonstrated that internet dialects operate much like any other dialect: speakers learn to switch confidently and accurately between the two, borrowing words from one to the other as seems appropriate, to the lexical enhancement of both. The internet has changed the English language considerably; long may it continue.

Speech On The Internet

Internet has become a very hot topic these days on which various articles are often written especially on those occasions when students have to address somewhere in today’s globalized world. Internet is needed everywhere – be it an organization, education institute, research center or someone at home for their personal work. Apart from this, teachers often ask their students to write an effective speech, citing the advantages and disadvantages of the Internet and its increasing ill-effects on children. So we have covered it to help them as well.

Speech on Internet in English

Speech – 1.

Hello ladies and gentlemen!

As you know today’s seminar has been organized to discuss various aspects of Internet (its advantages and disadvantages). I welcome all of you to this function as the host of today’s seminar and hope that with the active organizational participation of all of you, this event can prove to be beneficial for all present here. Before starting the round of discussion, I would like to give a short speech on the Internet so that my audience can get a chance to know more about it and you can further enhance your existing knowledge.

The definition of the Internet is not the same for everyone. Interpretation of the Internet includes different meanings for different people. This is mainly because of the fact that it encompasses a wide variety of dimensions with multiple opportunities for trade and commerce. In other words internet is an acronym for internetwork system i.e. a network of computers.

Did you know that in 1969 the US Department of Defense, with the help of its Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA), developed a system of computer networks through the use of telephone lines and named it ARPANet which means the beginning of the Internet? ARPANet enabled officers to reach a variety of military personnel and academics using their sites located at multiple locations.

Then with gradual developments in networking technology and access to a wide variety of information on the ARPANet, authorities added more and more computers to the source. Thus a significant minimum support for the Internet was achieved. With the end of ARPANet in 1990, the Internet emerged as the most powerful and effective form of communication.

Apart from this I have to share with you some more basic facts about internet. The Internet’s architecture consists of 3 basic layers namely the Internet Backbone, the Internet Service Provider and finally the End User. The Internet backbone is actually considered a high-speed network interconnected and interconnected with high-speed data and transfer lines that provide Internet services. To access the Internet, the end user mostly reaches out to the Internet Service Provider.

I need not say that internet has made everything so easy for us and we can use different things together at the same time i.e. from job searching to paying bills. This definitely saves us a lot of time, energy of physical exertion which we can use in some other work.

After telling all this, I would also like to mention that while on the one hand there are various advantages of internet, on the other hand it also has disadvantages i.e. it has a very bad effect on our health. As you keep on working on the Internet every day, your body becomes accustomed to it and doing any physical activity, your body gets surrounded by diseases causing pain which affects your quality of life.

I hope that my speech will help you to reinforce and understand your points of view. Now I request all of you viewers to give your opinion and start the discussion phase.

Honorable Principal, Vice President, my co-workers and dear students – Good morning to all of you!

Morning meeting is about to end and our managing committee has decided to select any one topic and give a speech on it every other day so that our students can become more socially aware. So today the topic which has been chosen for giving speech is internet and I am your sociology teacher going to give a speech on the same. I hope you will find it useful and informative and you can also give your opinion on this or ask any type of question.

To begin my speech, I would like to say that the Internet has evolved into a large-scale system of computers that use the common Internet Protocol suite (known as TCP/IP) to serve the needs of billions of people globally. Although not every application uses TCP). This network is a comprehensive web consisting of millions of public, private, business, educational as well as government networks, a global platform connected with a broad range of local, wireless, electronic and optical networking technologies. There is no doubt that on the Internet you can find a wide array of services as well as information resources such as infrastructure for maintaining email accounts with the help of the inter-connected hypertext pages of the World Wide Web (WWW).

The Internet is relatively cheap and fast – The Internet is benefitting organizations and students around the world by providing important information. The two most important uses of the Internet are information and communication. As soon as possible the information should be revised as much as possible so as to open up the scope of better education and understanding for the public.

However unfortunately today’s generation especially our students have become so accustomed to this technology that they are getting away from their academic goals. They spend their time surfing the internet, browsing and chatting with friends on the internet all day, leaving them with barely any time left for their studies. What is worse is that this habit makes them erratic in their studies so that they lose their ability to lead an organized life, due to which the standard of those students keeps on falling. After studying the habits of students using internet data and using social networking sites, experts agree that the results are definitely not student friendly.

Social networks like Facebook, Twitter, MySpace etc have become major hurdles in the way of students’ educational goals. The serious problem with these techniques is that there is no way to prevent students from getting used to it when they reach the university level of study, but schools can play an important role in guiding students and making them understand the importance of time management skills. can help you understand.

On the other hand the Internet is a vast storehouse of information and it can be used by the students to complete their projects and assignments. One can definitely get all possible information or knowledge related to humanity on internet so easily browse through internet for necessary information and study them whenever needed.

In the end I want to say that if used in the right way technology becomes a boon and if it is used in a wrong way it can destroy humanity. So make the best use of it and reap its benefits.

Now kids you can raise your hands and share your thoughts with us one by one.

Respected Principal, respected teachers and my dear students – Good morning to all of you!

Today in our organization this meeting has been organized to discuss various aspects of internet and I as manager of this organization want to describe its various aspects through few words on internet because these days it is very important That we all should know about the Internet. Internet is one of the biggest needs of today’s lifestyle. The Internet is a system of a set of computer networks that communicate using the Internet Protocol (IP) and use Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) to forward those communications.

The origins of the Internet stem from research initiated by the United States government in the 1960s to produce robust and fault-tolerant communication via computers. The beginning of the transition to the modern Internet and the rapid growth in institutional, personal and mobile computers was due to network connectivity in the early 1990s. By the late 2000s, Internet services had become integrated into almost every part of our lives. Traditional communication networks and media such as newspapers, paper mail, television, etc. are being redefined as are email, digital newspapers, online music, etc.

Print publishing is being transformed into blogging, web feeds and online news aggregators through the adaptation of website technology. Many new dimensions of personal interaction have been established in the form of instant messaging, Internet forums and social networking websites. The trend of online shopping has increased tremendously due to the directness and convenience. Business and financial services over the Internet help to connect entire industries around the world.

Its biggest service is the World Wide-Web (WWW). It is used by billions of people around the world. Different WWW (World Wide Web) software such as Microsoft’s Internet Explorer/Edge, Mozilla Firefox, Opera, Apple’s Safari and Google Chrome etc. facilitates users to navigate through hyperlinks from one web page to another. provides. The WWW (World Wide Web) has decentralized information on a vast scale.

Along with many advantages, there are also some disadvantages of internet. The Internet can prove to be dangerous in some aspects. Sometimes people use it to spread rumors or other people’s secrets or to carry out dangerous acts like terrorist acts. Sometimes it can also be used by other people to read the information sent by you which is sent through the internet. For example there are some problems with the privacy settings of Facebook.

If someone posts something on a website then it can also prove to be bad unless he is sure of what he is doing. The way to check a secure website is to make sure that the URL starts with https:// instead of http://. This means that it is secure and information cannot be read by other people when it is being sent. In the end, it is in our hands whether to use the internet in a positive way or in a negative way.

With this, I end my speech and hope that this speech has increased your knowledge about the Internet.

Thanks and hope you have a nice day.

Respected Principal, respected teachers and my dear students.

I am Nandani, a class 12 student and am here in front of you all today to speak on the internet. As you know this event has been organized with the aim of spreading awareness among the young generation of internet. Internet has become an important part of our today’s life especially for the younger generation. The largest worldwide communication network today is the Internet. The Internet is a global system of sets of computer networks that communicate using the Internet Protocol (IP).

The Internet is developed by the “United States Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency” (DARPA) which is in the United States. The first connection became known as ARPANet and was developed in October 1969. The most popular Internet service is the World Wide Web (WWW) and was created in 1990 by a British man named Tim Burns Lee at CERN, Switzerland. The World Wide Web is the most widely used service on the Internet and is also known as the “web”. This includes many websites, including blogs and Wikipedia. Everyone can read these web pages and can be viewed by anyone on the Internet without requiring a password.

The Internet has no centralized government for technical implementation, access and use. Each authorized network has to set its own policy.

In today’s world the Internet is used for many purposes such as sending electronic mail, chatting online through multiple applications, transferring files from one device to another, and getting infinite information on countless topics. The biggest and most important use of the Internet is sending and receiving e-mails. E-mail is secure and private and is sent from user to user. Websites such as instant messaging applications such as AIM or ICQ allow more than two people to chat and are much faster than other websites.

Many governments around the world consider the Internet to be bad and for this reason block some sites in some parts of their country or even in the whole country. For example, the Chinese government thinks that Wikipedia is not good and the people of the country cannot read it or add anything to it, so it closes it. Sometimes parents block those parts of the internet which is not good for their children’s future. Many devices, or most devices, have a parental control system. Many countries have completely blocked internet access such as North Korea and Myanmar.

Some websites are designed to trick or deceive people into downloading harmful viruses so as to sneak into systems through which anyone can spy. E-mail can also be dangerous as any person can send harmful virus etc through any attachment. Many people use Internet chat rooms to keep track of others. Many websites on the Internet contain some content that can be difficult for many users. Sometimes people on the Internet become victims of fraudsters by sending money or personal data.

We just need to have awareness and a little knowledge to surf the internet safely and we should also use it wisely.

With this, I hope to conclude my speech that it will give you a clear vision about the Internet.

Thank you. have a nice day.

Speech on Internet Privacy

It is rightly said that today’s era is a digital era. We may not realize it now, but the internet has become a new necessity in our lives. It has witnessed a boom like never before. In today’s time, the internet is as important to us as food, water, air is. Having said that, internet or internet privacy does have a dark side about which we must be aware of. Internet users must be well-versed in the methods for safeguarding their data on the internet. In this blog, we have brought to you a speech on internet privacy that you can refer to for your English homework, assignments, and exams.

Before actually skipping onto the speech on internet privacy, let us first discuss what is meant by internet privacy. The amount of privacy protection an individual has while connected to the Internet is defined as online privacy or internet privacy. It discusses the level of internet security accessible for personal and financial information, conversations, and preferences. Internet users frequently try to enhance their online privacy by using anti-virus software, creating strong passwords, disabling tracking, evaluating site security, and selecting for tougher privacy settings. Online privacy threats vary from phishing schemes to viruses, and issues with website security can lead to identity theft. Internet privacy is a complicated topic that encompasses how your personal information is utilized, gathered, shared, and kept on your own devices and when connected to the Internet. Personal information about your habits, purchasing, and location can be gathered and shared with third parties via your phone, GPS, and other devices. Users of the internet and mobile devices have the right to know how their information will be used and to examine online privacy policies.

Good morning everyone! I am Aryaman and today I stand before you to present an insightful and informative speech on Internet Privacy. Privacy, whether offline or online, is definitely our right, which should be demanded and expected no matter what the cost, but one might wonder why there is so much concern centered around internet privacy. Most of our lives have become virtual in the pandemic era, and all activities that were previously done offline are now done online. Be it our bank details, legal discussions with CA , or our professional work-related details, there is no guarantee that privacy on the internet is guarded.

In the year 1997, the Consumer Internet Privacy Protection Act was passed by the government as per which the consumer information shared on the internet should be safeguarded at any cost, but still, it is a matter of utmost concern and importance because the internet offers various communication tools which are frequently used and there too, the information being shared can be tracked by someone who knows how to do it and also technology has grown at a steadfast level that even our old messages that are deleted can be easily retrieved because of availability of countless apps. Certain websites use cookies that record data while we sign up or log in and, even if we are anonymous, it is relatively easy in this technologically advanced era to know our true identity, personal details, and Internet Service Provider details as well.

As a result, whatever web-based email services we use, such as Yahoo, Hotmail, or Gmail, we must be familiar with the privacy policies of those services before signing up or logging in to protect our privacy, and we must not hesitate to take action against heinous cybercrimes if we become aware of any kind of cyber abuse.

Good morning everyone! I am Aryaman and today I stand before you to present an insightful and informative speech on Internet Privacy. We can define internet privacy as safeguarding our personal, financial, and other important information when we are online. However, after decoding the definition, one must ask, “Is internet privacy a reality or a myth?”Let us further explore this problem and crack the code. Due to the pandemic, most of our lives have now taken a virtual turn and most of our tasks, be it our work meetings, binge-watching our favorite web series, chatting with friends, online business transactions, and banking transactions, are all done online.

In real life, we only disclose information that we believe is not confidential, but in the online world, simple information such as email IDs and passwords can be traced by a skilled individual, and technology has advanced to the point where the internet and mobile phones are available to children, making them just as vulnerable as adults. After understanding the gravity of the situation, we must explore the ways in which we can ensure our online privacy. To begin with, there are a plethora of software applications that ensure online privacy, such as anti-viruses and anti-malware, and it is critical that these software applications are updated to their most recent version to avoid any sort of privacy problem. Second of all, internet history must be cleared on a regular basis. Online investments and banking transactions must be done through reliable sources only. Thirdly, online shopping must be done on reliable websites only which have credibility and authenticity, and we must avoid giving our information to those websites which don’t seem to be genuine and authentic. Also, we must keep a strong password for our email IDs and for other accounts as well.

We must be well-versed in Internet privacy laws, and if we encounter any type of online privacy issue, we must report it immediately so that the problem does not worsen. After attaining a crystal clear understanding of internet privacy, we must continually educate ourselves about this problem and be aware and prevent ourselves from having any sort of online privacy problem. In the end, I would like to say my heartiest thanks to the audience for listening to my speech on internet privacy with patience.

Internet English and the Evolution of Grammar

Internet english is an emerging language system whose rapid development and complexity has implications for the evolution of grammar.

By Calley Pierce Course: Morphology and Syntax (Ling 4420) Advisor: Jared Desjardins LURA 2019

The Oxford comma. “Ask” instead of “aks.” There, their, and they’re. The legitimacy of “ain’t” and “y’all.” These are familiar, if sometimes contentious, issues in the usage of the English language. Users decide what is correct and tend to impose it upon others, and the same principle has understandably been applied to Internet English. Many of us look at Internet English through the lens of conventional written English and familiar forms of spoken English: we may be hard pressed to see the following as "real English" as it is so different:

o fr? lol wya

Early in life, I had begun to suspect there was something very special happening with language on social media. I had heard many people dismiss language on the Internet as degraded and lacking intelligent meaning, but I struggled to believe this was the case. I wondered what the nature and significance of Internet English was, and how it may impact our understanding of the evolution of language.

I began my research by looking at literature on the evolutionary emergence of grammar. When we know how something began, that can inform how fast it will change. While the expression of grammar differs widely from language to language, the purpose of grammar is ubiquitous. Grammar is what makes language constructible and communicable; we need to produce language and have it be understood. Grammar is a finite system for conveying infinite meanings—all languages can (and must) be able to express absolutely anything. So since new meanings are constantly being generated on the Internet, grammar adapts in order to express those meanings as fast and as well as it can. Internet users can reference, in a variety of forms, a meme, a quote, a story, a world event, and so on. Accordingly, grammar, punctuation, and the general appearance of text are rapidly being restructured to accommodate this expansion.

Example (1)

pierce 2

(Retrieved from this site .)

The text in (1) includes emojis and repurposes punctuation both to imitate speech and for comedic effect. It captures meaning that would not be conveyed by its traditionally written counterpart, which may go something like: “How do people put on false eyelashes? I try putting on one and I’m so bad at it, it’s laughable.”

Example (2)

pierce 3

(Retrieved from this site .)

The text in (2) is an example of one of the key innovations in Internet English, the keyboard smash. It is usually used to capture a strong emotion, such as laughter or fear. This meaning has no counterpart in standard written form, nor can it be said aloud.

I would suggest that Internet English is best understood as a language that is “seen” rather than “read.” While Internet English is basically a form of written language, it pulls strongly in the direction of spoken language. Consider how prosody, or the sound of a voice going up and down, is imitated by altering the look and shape of text in (3):

Example (3)

pierce 4

(Retrieved from this site .):

Punctuation can also be used to the same voice-like end, as in (4):

Example (4)

pierce 6

Along with focusing on qualities of the text, emojis increasingly play a very real and sophisticated grammatical function in Internet English. While sometimes emojis are simply contextual “decoration,” as in:

emoji 3

they can also function as individual, meaningful units as in (5):

Example (5)

pierce 7

The emoji used here functions like a word due to its placement and interpretation in the sentence.

Another word-like, grammar-like quality of emojis is how they can function as an abbreviation. For example, someone may tweet a link to an article and caption it with

emoji 2

My goal was to investigate just how linguistically innovative Internet language is and how its development may inform our understanding of the evolution of language. Internet English is, despite its young age, used and understood by millions of people, and users know that there is social capital in properly or creatively using emojis, as well as omitting punctuation or reinventing its purpose. Internet English is not poorly written English; it is a new way to produce language.

Technology in This Generation

We are in a generation, where technology has surrounded us from all sides. Our everyday life runs on the use of technology, be it in the form of an alarm clock or a table lamp. Technology has been an important part of our daily lives. Therefore, it is important for the students to be familiar with the term technology. Therefore, we have provided a long speech on technology for students of all age groups. There is also a short speech and a 10 lines speech given in this article.

Long Speech on Technology

A warm welcome to everyone gathered here today. I am here to deliver a speech on technology which has taken a tremendous role in our day to day life. We all are in a generation where everything is dependent on technology. Let’s understand what technology is through the lens of Science.

Technology comes in the form of tangible and intangible properties by exerting physical and mental force to achieve something that adds value. For example, a mobile phone is tangible, and the network connection used by the phone is intangible. Technology has taken its place as indispensable, wherein it has resulted in economic benefits, better health care, time-saving, and better lifestyle.

Due to technology, we have a significant amount of knowledge to improve our lives and solve problems. We can get our work done efficiently and effectively. As long as you know how to access technology, it can be used and proves to benefit people of all ages greatly. Technology is constantly being modified and upgraded every passing year.

The evolution of technology has made it possible to achieve lots in less time. Technology has given tools and machines to be used to solve problems around the world. There has been a complete transformation in the way we do things because of contributions from scientific technology. We can achieve more tasks while saving our time and hence in a better place than our previous generation.

Right from the ringing of the morning alarm to switching off the fan, everything runs behind the technology. Even the microphone that I am using is an innovation of technology and thus the list continues. With several inventions of hi-tech products, our daily needs are available on a screen at our fingertips. These innovations and technologies have made our lives a lot easier. Everything can be done at the comfort of your home within a couple of hours or so. These technologies have not only helped us in the digital platform but have also given us innovations in the field of medical, educational, industrial as well as in agricultural sectors. If we go back to the older generations, it would take days to get any things solved, even if there were not many treatments for several diseases.

But today with the innovations of technology, many diseases can be treated and diagnosed within a shorter period of time. The relationship between humans and technology has continued for ages and has given rise to many innovations. It has made it easier for us to handle our daily chores starting from home, office, schools and kitchen needs. It has made available basic necessities and safer living spaces. We can sit at home comfortably and make transactions through the use of online banking. Online shopping, video calling, and attending video lectures on the phone have all been possible due to the invention of the internet.

People in the past would write letters to communicate with one another, and today due to technology, traditional letters have been replaced by emails and mobile phones. These features are the essential gifts of technology. Everything is just at our fingertips, right from turning on the lights to doing our laundry. The whole world runs on technology and hence, we are solely dependent on it. But everything has its pros and cons. While the benefits of technology are immense, it also comes with some negative effects and possibly irreversible damages to humanity and our planet.

We have become so dependent on technology that we often avoid doing things on our own. It as a result makes us lazy and physically inactive. This has also led to several health issues such as obesity and heart diseases. We prefer booking a cab online rather than walking a few kilometres. Technology has increased screen time, and thus, children are no longer used to playing in the playgrounds but are rather found spending hours on their phones playing video games. This has eroded children’s creativity, intelligence, and memory. No doubt, technology is a very essential part of our life, but we should not be totally dependent on it. We should practise being more fit and do regular activities on our own to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

The other aspects that have been badly affected us are that since technology replaced human interference, is unemployment. Social media platforms like Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, etc., were meant to connect people and increase our community circle. Still, it has made people all the more lonely, with cases of depression on the rise amongst the youth.

There are several controversies around the way world leaders have used technology in defence and industrialisation under the banner of development and advancements. The side effects of technology have resulted in pollution, climate change, forest fires, extreme storms, cyclones, impure air, global warming, land area getting reduced and natural resources getting extinct. It’s time we change our outlook towards selfish technology and bring about responsible technology. Every nation needs to set aside budgets to come up with sustainable technological developments.

As students, we should develop creative problem solving using critical thinking to bring clean technology into our world. As we improve our nation, we must think of our future for a greener and cleaner tomorrow. You would be glad to know that several initiatives have been initiated to bring awareness amongst children and youth to invent cleaner technology.

For example, 15-year-old Vinisha Umashankar invented a solar ironing cart and has been awarded the Earth Shot Prize by the Royal Foundation of the duke and duchess of Cambridge and honoured to speak at the COP26 climate change conference in Glasgow, Scotland. Her invention should be an inspiration to each one of us to pursue clean technology.

The top five technologically advanced countries are Japan, America, Germany, China and South Korea. We Indians will make our mark on this list someday. Technology has a vital role in our lives but lets us be mindful that we control technology and that technology doesn’t control us. Technology is a tool to elevate humanity and is not meant to be a self-destroying mechanism under the pretext of economic development. Lastly, I would like to conclude my speech by saying that technology is a boon for our society but we should use it in a productive way.

A Short Speech on Technology

A warm greeting to everyone present here. Today I am here to talk about technology and how it has gifted us with various innovations. Technology as we know it is the application of scientific ideas to develop a machine or a device for serving the needs of humans. We, human beings, are completely dependent on technology in our daily life. We have used technology in every aspect of our life starting from household needs, schools, offices, communication and entertainment. Our life has been more comfortable due to the use of technology. We are in a much better and comfortable position as compared to our older generation. This is possible because of various contributions and innovations made in the field of technology. Everything has been made easily accessible for us at our fingertips right from buying a thing online to making any banking transaction. It has also led to the invention of the internet which gave us access to search for any information on google. But there are also some disadvantages. Relying too much on technology has made us physically lazy and unhealthy due to the lack of any physical activity. Children have become more prone to video games and social media which have led to obesity and depression. Since they are no longer used to playing outside and socialising, they often feel isolated. Therefore, we must not totally be dependent on technology and should try using it in a productive way.

10 Lines Speech on Technology

Technology has taken an important place in our lives and is considered an asset for our daily needs.

The world around us is totally dependent on technology, thus, making our lives easier.

The innovation of phones, televisions and laptops has digitally served the purpose of entertainment today.

Technology has not only helped us digitally but has also led to various innovations in the field of medical science.

Earlier it took years to diagnose and treat any particular disease, but today with the help of technology it has led to the early diagnosis of several diseases.

We, in this generation, like to do things sitting at our own comfort within a short period of time. This thing has been made possible by technology.

All our daily activities such as banking, shopping, entertainment, learning and communication can be done on a digital platform just by a click on our phone screen.

Although all these gifts of technology are really making our lives faster and easier, it too has got several disadvantages.

Since we all are highly dependent on technology, it has reduced our daily physical activity. We no longer put effort to do anything on our own as everything is available at a minute's click.

Children nowadays are more addicted to online video games rather than playing outside in the playground. These habits make them more physically inactive.

No Country Should be Making Speech Rules for the World

A figure shouts through a megaphone being held by another figure.

It’s a simple proposition: no single country should be able to restrict speech across the entire internet. Any other approach invites a swift relay race to the bottom for online expression, giving governments and courts in countries with the weakest speech protections carte blanche to edit the internet.

Unfortunately, governments, including democracies that care about the rule of law, too often lose sight of this simple proposition. That’s why EFF, represented by Johnson Winter Slattery , has moved to intervene in support of X, formerly known as Twitter’s legal challenge to a global takedown order from Australia’s eSafety Commissioner. The Commissioner ordered X and Meta to take down a post with a video of a stabbing in a church. X complied by geo-blocking the post so Australian users couldn’t access it, but it declined to block it elsewhere. The Commissioner asked an Australian court to order a global takedown.

Our intervention calls the court’s attention to the important public interests at stake in this litigation, particularly for internet users who are not parties to the case but will nonetheless be affected by the precedent it sets. A ruling against X is effectively a declaration that an Australian court (or its eSafety Commissioner) can prevent internet users around the world from accessing something online, even if the law in their own country is quite different. In the United States, for example, the First Amendment guarantees that platforms generally have the right to decide what content they will host, and their users have a corollary right to receive it.

We’ve seen this movie before. In Google v Equustek , a company used a trade secret claim to persuade a Canadian court to order Google to delete search results linking to sites that contained allegedly infringing goods from Google.ca and all other Google domains, including  Google.com  and  Google.co.uk . Google appealed, but both the British Columbia Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court of Canada upheld the order. The following year, a U.S. court held the ruling couldn’t be enforced against Google US.

The Australian takedown order also ignores international human rights standards, restricting global access to information without considering less speech-intrusive alternatives. In other words: the Commissioner used a sledgehammer to crack a nut.

If one court can impose speech-restrictive rules on the entire Internet—despite direct conflicts with laws a foreign jurisdiction as well as international human rights principles—the norms of expectations of all internet users are at risk. We’re glad X is fighting back, and we hope the judge will recognize the eSafety regulator’s demand for what it is—a big step toward unchecked global censorship—and refuse to let Australia set another dangerous precedent.

Ukraine war latest: Situation in Kharkiv 'dire' - after world took 'eye off the ball' on Ukraine

The UN says it is "deeply concerned" about the situation in northeastern Ukraine, as Russia claims advances in the region. Defence secretary Grant Shapps has criticised the world for delays in getting support to Kyiv. Submit your question on the war for our experts to answer below.

Thanks for following along - we'll be back soon.

Scroll down to catch up on the latest developments in the conflict today.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy will travel to Spain on Friday for a meeting with King Felipe in Madrid, according to a royal palace statement.

Ukraine's defence minister says it is "extremely difficult" for troops to hold ground in Ukraine as they remain outgunned by Russian forces.

Rustem Umerov made a renewed plea for more shells and military supplies as Russia intensifies its offensive in the country's northeast.

"We need more artillery shells as Russia is still many times ahead," he told the Copenhagen Democracy Summit 2024 in an online address.

"Under such conditions it's extremely difficult to hold the ground."

Russia has put its submarine-launched Bulava intercontinental ballistic missile into service, the TASS state news agency reports.

Russia's state media quoted the missile's chief designer Yuri Solomonov as saying its adoption was announced in a decree on 7 May, the same day that Vladimir Putin began a new six-year term in the Kremlin.

The Bulava was developed under a programme that started in the 1990s, and is designed to be deployed on Russia's Borei-class submarines.

Last November, the defence ministry said one of those submarines had successfully test-launched the Bulava, firing it from an underwater position in the White Sea off northern Russia.

TASS said Russia's Northern and Pacific fleets now include seven Borei submarines and each carries 16 Bulavas.

For context : Vladimir Putin has warned the West since the start of the war in Ukraine that direct intervention by NATO troops there could trigger a nuclear conflict.

In March he said he did not believe the US was "rushing" towards this, but that Russia's nuclear forces were technically ready.

The world taking its "eye off the ball" led to the position we see in Kharkiv today, defence secretary Grant Shapps has said.

Speaking at the Sea Power Conference today, the minister reiterated the UK's complete support for Ukraine, saying Russia winning would be "unimaginable and unacceptable".

He said: "I've heard repeatedly, including said to me by [Ukraine's] President Zelenskyy, which is that without Britain, they wonder whether they would still have been in this war at all."

He listed the UK's commitments to Ukraine, and criticised the world for having taken its "eye off the ball" recently.

"The amount of time it's taken to get the rest of the funding through has directly led to the position we see in Kharkiv today," he said.

He added that he did not think the situation was "fatal", however, and said it was "an important lesson to the world not to lose attention about Ukraine".

Ukraine must develop the "strongest possible democracy", Antony Blinken has told officials during a working lunch in a pizzeria in Kyiv.

The US secretary of state said it was "imperative" that fighting corruption in the country continues along with fighting Russian aggression.

He also said it was important Ukraine developed "the strongest possible democracy" that reflects its citizens and attracts investment.

Mr Blinken's surprise visit follows the approval of a long-delayed foreign assistance package for Ukraine by Congress.

The package sets aside $61bn (£48.1bn) in aid for Ukraine, much of which will go toward replenishing badly depleted artillery and air defence systems.

Russian troops have captured the town of Buhruvatka in Ukraine's Kharkiv region, the defence ministry reports, according to Reuters.

The claim comes hours after Russia's TASS  news agency reported the western and northern parts of Vovchansk in Ukraine's Kharkhiv region had fallen (see post at 9.21am).

Sky News cannot independently verify these battlefield claims.

Russia's supreme court has rejected an appeal by Kremlin critic Vladimir Kara-Murza against his 25-year jail sentence, according to Reuters.

The prominent Russian opposition figure, who has both Russian and British passports, was arrested near his Moscow home in April 2022 and convicted of treason by a court in April 2023.

He has repeatedly condemned Russia's war in Ukraine, criticised Vladimir Putin, and lobbied for Western sanctions against Moscow.

In his appeal, Mr Kara-Murza had argued that he had committed no crime and was convicted solely for exercising his right to free speech by expressing public opposition to Mr Putin and the war.

"This whole case is based on the denial of the very concepts of law, justice, and legality," he said in a written submission to the court.

"But it is also based on a crude, cynical forgery - an attempt to equate criticism of the authorities with harm to the country; to present opposition activity as 'treason'. But there is nothing new in this, either; it is what every dictatorship does."

Evacuations are under way in the town of Vovchansk, in the northeast Kharkiv region.

Local officials fear that Vovchansk's fate may mirror that of Bakhmut and Avdiivka, Ukrainian cities where fierce fighting forced Ukrainian withdrawals.

The Kremlin's forces are aiming to exploit Ukrainian weaknesses before a big batch of new military aid for Kyiv from the US and European partners arrives on the battlefield, according to analysts.

Six children have been rescued from the Russian-occupied Kherson region, the area's governor Oleksandr Prokudin has said.

Mr Prokudin said on Telegram the children - one girl and five boys - were "rescued from the camps of the Russian occupiers".

The Save Ukraine organisation worked on the rescue mission, he said.

"It was an extremely difficult rescue mission with delays at roadblocks and intimidation," the governor said.

"Fortunately, all the children are safe now. Doctors and psychologists work with them."

The children were aged between five and 12.

Australian Court Sides With Elon Musk’s X in Freedom of Speech Row

Elon Musk Twitter Disparaged

An Australian court on Monday sided with Elon Musk ’s X (formerly Twitter) in an argument over graphic video.

The federal government’s internet safety watchdog, known as the eSafety Commissioner, had last month won an injunction against X over video footage of a knife attack at a Sydney church.

The government had ruled that the attack in which four people were seriously injured, constituted a terrorist incident and applied to the courts for an order requiring the removal of the footage within 24 hours.

Popular on Variety

“Our concern is that if ANY country is allowed to censor content for ALL countries, which is what the Australian ‘eSafety Commissar’ is demanding, then what is to stop any country from controlling the entire Internet?” Musk said on X.

Musk’s stance outraged the Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese who accused Musk of “arrogance” and acting “above Australian law.” “The e-Safety Commissioner has made a ruling. The other social media platforms all complied without complaint,” Albanese said in interviews in April. “This is a measure that has a bipartisan support in this country.”

On Monday, however, Justice Geoffrey Kennett rejected the eSafety Commissioner’s application to extend the injunction. He did not explain his reasoning and a further hearing on the matter is scheduled later this week ahead of a final decision.

The issues of government controls over the internet, national security versus censorship and the extent of jurisdiction, is fraught with contradictions and ongoing cases – Bytedance is currently arguing that a U.S. decision to force it to sell social media platform TikTok is against the U.S. First Amendment right to free speech, yet TiKtok’s sister company Douyin actively complies with the Chinese government’s content censorship regime.

“X says [..] global removal is reasonable when X does it because X wants to do it, but it becomes unreasonable when it is told to do it by the laws of Australia,” Begbie told the court.

Long Speech On Internet 500 Words In English

Good Morning to all.

Today I am present here to give a speech on the Internet. The world is small, and this saying seems realistic with the invention of the Internet. We all know that the Internet has connected the world, and people’s distance is no longer a problem. One of the significant features of technological growth happening all over the world is because of the Internet. The Internet is changing the way one works, educates, travel, and entertains oneself and is readily available to many individuals.

I want to highlight the features of the Internet, although many of you already are aware of it. The function of the Internet is that it brings two or more gadget screens that can connect through signals, and therefore through this medium, information can be exchanged. The first use of the Internet starts forty years back in the United States of America. Robert E. Kahn and Vint Cerf invented the Internet. Back in the day internet was used only to exchange emails between two computers but now it has successfully reached all parts of the world.

The internet facilities have unlimited advantages and have proved to be an asset to humankind’s technological growth. It allows users to connect with their families even when you are residing far away, and you can connect with them through chats, video conferencing, and emails quickly. It not only provides users to collect information of all kinds but also provides moving services such as watching movies, playing games, listening to music. Services such as online banking, travel ticket booking, shopping, etc. are all part of the perks provided by the Internet. But the Internet also has its dark side.

Nowadays, the misuse of the Internet is increasing day by day by using it for fraud and illegal works. The rate of cybercrimes is increasing at a high rate, affecting people’s trust on the Internet, which is majorly happening due to the use of the Internet by the wrong hands.

People of negative mentality are abusing many other people based on caste, color, race, appearance, etc. all over the social networking sites. One of the issues the parents face is their children getting addicted to online games, avoiding their studies, and avoiding outdoor games.

In people’s day-to-day lives, the Internet plays an important role, and it is almost impossible for us to spend even one day without the Internet. So even though seeing the negative impacts of the Internet, we practically cannot keep away from the Internet. So, what we can do is to put a timeline on its usage mostly for children.

Monitoring and guiding the children on the proper usage of the Internet is essential for the parents and teachers. Educating and awakening people of online fraud and cybercrime is part of our duty, and heavy penalties are there in internet fraud cases. Therefore, through proper awareness and precautions, the Internet can turn as a boon for the advancement of human society.

IR-2024-133, May 6, 2024

WASHINGTON ― The Internal Revenue Service today reminded the 1 million people who didn’t file their tax year 2020 returns they may be eligible for a refund if they file by the May 17 deadline.

The IRS estimates more than $1 billion in refunds remain unclaimed because people haven’t filed their 2020 tax returns yet. The state-by-state table below shows how many people are potentially eligible for these refunds, and the average median refund in each state.

There's no penalty for failure to file if a refund is due. However, a return claiming a refund must be filed within three years of its due date for a refund to be allowed. After the expiration of the three-year period, the refund statute generally prevents the issuance of a refund check and the application of any credits, including overpayments of estimated taxes or withholding amounts, to other tax years that are underpaid.

For 2020 tax returns, people have a little more time than usual to file their claim for refunds. Typically, the filing deadline to claim old refunds falls around the tax deadline of April 15. However, the 2020 filing deadline was pushed to May 17, due to COVID-19, making the three-year window deadline for 2020 unfiled returns May 17, 2024. The IRS issued Notice 2023-21 on Feb. 27, 2023, providing legal guidance on claims required by the postponed deadline.

Many people who didn’t file may be eligible for more

By missing out on filing a tax return, people stand to lose more than just their refund of taxes withheld or paid during 2020. The estimate does not include credits that non-filers may be eligible to receive. Credits include the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) , the Recovery Rebate Credit or other credits that may be applicable.

Many low- and moderate-income workers may be eligible for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC). For 2020, the EITC was worth as much as $6,660 for taxpayers with qualifying children. The EITC helps individuals and families whose incomes are below certain thresholds.

The IRS has previously reminded those who may be entitled to the COVID-era Recovery Rebate Credit in 2020 that time is running out to file a tax return and claim their money. The Recovery Rebate Credit is a refundable credit for individuals who did not receive one or more Economic Impact Payments, also known as stimulus payments, distributed in 2020 and 2021.

Plan to file? IRS offers options to get key documents

Gathering all the necessary documents and forms to file a return for 2020 may take some time. People should start as soon as possible to make sure they have enough time to file before the May 17 deadline for 2020 refunds. Here are some options:

  • Request copies of key documents. Taxpayers who are missing Forms W-2, 1098, 1099 or 5498 for the years 2020, 2021 or 2022 can request copies from their employer, bank or other payers.
  • Use Get Transcript Online at IRS.gov. Taxpayers who have lost contact with their employer or other payers can order a free wage and income transcript at IRS.gov using the Get Transcript Online tool. For many taxpayers, this is by far the quickest and easiest option.
  • Request a transcript. Another option is for people to file Form 4506-T, Request for Transcript of Tax Return , with the IRS to request a “wage and income transcript.” A wage and income transcript shows data from information returns received by the IRS, such as Forms W-2, 1099, 1098, Form 5498 and IRA contribution information. Taxpayers can use the information from the transcript to file their tax return. But plan ahead – these written requests can take several weeks; people are strongly urged to try the other options first.
  • Current and prior years’ tax forms. Tax year 2020 Forms 1040 and 1040-SR and instructions are available on the IRS.gov Forms, instructions & publications page or by calling toll-free 800-TAX-FORM (800-829-3676).

Taxpayers who are unsure if they are required to file a return can visit Do I need to file a tax return? or refer to Publication 17, Your Federal Income Tax (For Individuals) .

Free help is available

For individuals who have not filed a federal income a tax return for 2020, the IRS offers tools and resources on IRS.gov. Free support includes the Interactive Tax Assistant (ITA) , information on What to do if you haven’t filed your return , and Frequently asked questions and answers (FAQs) .

Qualified taxpayers can also access free tax preparation assistance through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance and the Tax Counseling for the Elderly programs . Use the VITA Locator Tool or call 800-906-9887 to locate the nearest VITA site.

The IRS also reassures taxpayers there is no penalty for claiming a refund on a late-filed tax return. Direct deposit is recommended as the quickest and simplest way to receive a tax refund.

State-by-state estimates of individuals who may be due 2020 income tax refunds

The IRS estimated the number of individuals in each state and the median potential refund a filer may be entitled to receive. The actual refund amount will vary based on a household’s tax situation.
