What are Technology Research Topics?

A technology research topic is a research or thesis title that gives a researcher or expert an idea of what to work on. While in certain instances, people who make technology research will have their topic scribbled out for them, most of the time, they will need to get a topic themselves. These topics make it easy for them to work on.

Generally, a topic based on the technological field will be very formal. It must contain researched data and facts. The topic must have a final aim of projecting a solution, answer, or knowledge to the targeted audience. With this being the case, getting a technology research title requires more than just picking any topic. What will pass on as the best topic for research title will be one that can be researched and provides a solution to a problem that the target audience needs. In certain instances, both the problem and the solution may be completely new to the target audience.

However, the ability of the writer to make their target audience know that there is a problem and a corresponding solution could do the thesis and project a pathway to ground-breaking research. Hence, a research title must open the researcher, thesis student, and expert to opportunities that could trigger landmark solutions.

Research: Technology is changing how companies do business

By sarah mangus-sharpe.

A new study from the Cornell SC Johnson College of Business advances understanding of the U.S. production chain evolution amidst technological progress in information technology (IT), shedding light on the complex connections between business IT investments and organizational design. Advances in IT have sparked significant changes in how companies design their production processes. In the paper " Production Chain Organization in the Digital Age: Information Technology Use and Vertical Integration in U.S. Manufacturing ," which published April 30 in Management Science, Chris Forman , the Peter and Stephanie Nolan Professor in the Dyson School of Applied Economics and Management , and his co-author delved into what these changes mean for businesses and consumers.

Forman and Kristina McElheran, assistant professor of strategic management at University of Toronto, analyzed U.S. Census Bureau data of over 5,600 manufacturing plants to see how the production chains of businesses were affected by the internet revolution. Their use of census data allowed them to look inside the relationships among production units within and between companies and how transaction flows changed after companies invested in internet-enabled technology that facilitated coordination between them. The production units of many of the companies in their study concurrently sold to internal and external customers, a mix they refer to as plural selling. They found that the reduction in communication costs enabled by the internet shifted the mix toward more sales outside of the firm, or less vertical integration.

The research highlights the importance of staying ahead of the curve in technology. Companies that embrace digital technologies now are likely to be the ones that thrive in the future. And while there are still many unanswered questions about how these changes will play out, one thing is clear: The relationship between technology and business is only going to become more and more intertwined in the future.

One CISO Can’t Fill Your Board’s Cybersecurity Gaps

Adding a chief information security officer to a board is a popular move, but it’s not enough to improve cyber resilience. Learn how to raise an entire board’s security acumen.

The chairman of a large European enterprise approached me over drinks at an event for board members and CEOs on how to build enterprise security resilience. We started talking about cybersecurity risk — a grave concern for many boards. “I sit on seven boards, and we’re all expected to govern cyber risk, but none of us has an intuition about it,” he said. “What should we do?” He was worried about his ability to gut-check security-related information.

Today’s boards face an ever-evolving threat landscape and rising cybersecurity governance expectations. In July 2023, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission adopted new rules that require U.S.-listed companies to describe the board’s oversight of risks from cybersecurity threats and outline the processes by which the board or a relevant subcommittee gets informed about such risks. Similar regulatory initiatives are underway in Europe and the Asia-Pacific region.

But many board members find meeting those expectations and regulatory demands very challenging. According to research from The Wall Street Journal , 98% of company directors do not have cybersecurity expertise — just like the chairman I introduced above. That’s striking, given that board members are charged with using their own experience to look behind the veil of good news and probe for the true state of company affairs. Without security expertise, they have a hard time seeing through instances of window dressing in the carefully curated material that makes it to the board.

The intuitive (and quickest) solution to this problem is to recruit a current or former chief information security officer (CISO) to the board of directors. Accordingly, the share of CISOs who sit on corporate boards more than doubled in just one year, from 14% in 2022 to 30% in 2023, a Heidrick & Struggles survey found .

On its face, this seems to be a win-win: Boards increase their skills in a vital area, and many CISOs see joining corporate boards as a logical, fruitful career step. A CISO on the board can better integrate cybersecurity into business discussions at the highest level. More CISOs having board seats is good news, right?

CISOs on Boards: Two Issues to Consider

Recruiting CISOs to the board of directors just for their cybersecurity expertise is misguided for two main reasons. First, boards are supposed to act as a collective. Unlike management teams, which rely on individual accountability, boards ideally act as a single unit to achieve consensus on issues like strategy, risk, and governance.

Boards make decisions collectively, and each member shares collective accountability. No individual board member should act independently, and each member should have the skills to contribute more broadly to the work of the board. Hiring a CISO just to have an expert on cybersecurity to whom everyone else can turn when cybersecurity risk appears on the agenda goes against the fundamental idea of the board functioning as a collective.

Recruiting CISOs to the board of directors just for their cybersecurity expertise is misguided.

Second, consider a CISO’s core area of expertise, which is often technology or security. To contribute to the board meaningfully, directors should be literate in a whole range of areas, such as strategic planning, financial expertise, geopolitical factors, environmental issues, and fiduciary duties. Cybersecurity risk might appear on the agenda for only a few minutes during board meetings that can last multiple days. CISOs also need to possess literacy in all of the other areas that make board members successful.

Four Ways to Increase Board Cybersecurity Expertise

Instead of just delegating understanding cybersecurity risks to one board member by recruiting a CISO, boards should elevate their own collective knowledge and expertise. This does not mean that each board member must increase their knowledge all at once. Some individual board members might be more inclined to engage with cybersecurity, and they can help lead the way and channel conversations. However, it’s important that they don’t become the go-to experts that everyone else delegates understanding and decision-making to when cybersecurity appears on the board’s agenda.

Many boards have started to do something about cybersecurity risk — but very few take a comprehensive approach to elevating the entire board’s expertise with training. Here are four strategies I have incorporated into my work with boards to elevate their cybersecurity capabilities .

1. Quality time. Individual board directors can use internal resources to improve their literacy in cybersecurity. Chairpersons and board members can ask for one-on-one time with the organization’s CISO, without anyone else present.

The chair then can ask questions; for example:

  • Which items of the latest budget request didn’t get approved?
  • What are the biggest cybersecurity problems from a business perspective?
  • When did we last test our plans to respond to a serious cyberattack?
  • What can the board do to boost our company’s cyber resilience?

The purpose of this meeting is to try to discover what information doesn’t make it to the board. In addition, members can request more details on cybersecurity risk to supplement the short, high-level summary slides that usually get presented at board meetings.

Many board members sit on multiple company boards, but no two organizations are exactly alike. By looking within one company at a time, board members can become more familiar with the state of play: the company’s most serious cybersecurity threats, risks and their potential impacts, and the most pressing cybersecurity challenges. Individually spending quality time on cybersecurity equips board members with organization-specific knowledge so that they can contribute to discussions in a more meaningful way.

2. Educational courses. Individual board members can take executive education courses on cybersecurity risk from business schools, such as Oxford’s cybersecurity program for business leaders . These courses cover the foundations of cybersecurity risk, as well as new developments, trends, and risks in the regulatory and technology worlds, in areas like AI and quantum computing. Such courses also expose board members to case studies and best practices from other companies and industries on managing and governing cybersecurity risk. Many programs take place online and are based on asynchronous learning, which gives participants more flexibility to work through material.

I have seen boards offer online programs in areas such as sustainability, and some have even made attendance mandatory. Companies should similarly prioritize cybersecurity, given its strategic nature.

3. Cyber learning forums. To elevate the collective expertise of all board directors (and their management teams), some companies have set up recurring cyber learning forums. In my experience, this is an unusual but valuable tactic.

These quarterly or semiannual forums reside outside of the formal governance processes. The CEO chairs the forum, inviting the full board of directors and the management team, and works closely with the IT and cybersecurity teams on the agenda. The purpose of the forum is not to hold anyone to account but rather to create a safe environment in which to learn from each other and exchange ideas.

The people leading the discussion and sharing information are mostly internal colleagues. Board members aren’t asked to look at other companies’ choices but to look inward and improve the collective understanding of common challenges and solutions.

Learning forums offer another opportunity for board members to look beyond the information that gets presented during formal board meetings and understand the real levels of organizational resilience — in a nonconfrontational environment — without the common stand-off between management and the board.

4. Bespoke board sessions. Governing cybersecurity risk is often delegated to a subcommittee, such as audit, risk, or technology. This is where most of the governance work takes place. But it’s also important for the full board to dedicate substantial amounts of time to cybersecurity risk as a collective.

A bespoke board session held on the back of a quarterly board meeting is one of the most effective things a board can do to elevate its cybersecurity knowledge.

I have even come across boards that have set up an extraordinary board meeting just to focus on cybersecurity risk once a year. Some boards choose to work with an external adviser in setting up and running the session. This provides an opportunity to invite experts from their fields to talk about specific aspects of cybersecurity. I always encourage boards to invite other business executives — even from other industries — who have been through an attack to tell their story and share their lessons learned. I also encourage preparatory interviews with each board member in advance, to customize the session to the company and the board’s level of cybersecurity expertise. More organizations need to make this a habit: I see it in my work only with the most mature boards.

Bespoke sessions are a great way to avoid complacency. Board members can learn from the mistakes others have made and discover areas where governance processes may weaken their organization’s resilience to cyberattacks. Each bespoke board session should be followed up to make sure each director has increased their knowledge.

By taking a comprehensive approach to elevating board members’ cybersecurity expertise, boards can get ahead of attackers and proactively build cyber resiliency. Incorporating all four elements of this approach can help a board become more comfortable with all discussions on cybersecurity risk.

Even though the human visual system has sophisticated machinery for processing color, the brain has no problem recognizing objects in black-and-white images. A new study from MIT offers a possible explanation for how the brain comes to be so adept at identifying both color and color-degraded images.

Using experimental data and computational modeling, the researchers found evidence suggesting the roots of this ability may lie in development. Early in life, when newborns receive strongly limited color information, the brain is forced to learn to distinguish objects based on their luminance, or intensity of light they emit, rather than their color. Later in life, when the retina and cortex are better equipped to process colors, the brain incorporates color information as well but also maintains its previously acquired ability to recognize images without critical reliance on color cues.

The findings are consistent with previous work showing that initially degraded visual and auditory input can actually be beneficial to the early development of perceptual systems.

“This general idea, that there is something important about the initial limitations that we have in our perceptual system, transcends color vision and visual acuity. Some of the work that our lab has done in the context of audition also suggests that there’s something important about placing limits on the richness of information that the neonatal system is initially exposed to,” says Pawan Sinha, a professor of brain and cognitive sciences at MIT and the senior author of the study.

The findings also help to explain why children who are born blind but have their vision restored later in life, through the removal of congenital cataracts, have much more difficulty identifying objects presented in black and white. Those children, who receive rich color input as soon as their sight is restored, may develop an overreliance on color that makes them much less resilient to changes or removal of color information.

MIT postdocs Marin Vogelsang and Lukas Vogelsang, and Project Prakash research scientist Priti Gupta, are the lead authors of the study, which appears today in Science . Sidney Diamond, a retired neurologist who is now an MIT research affiliate, and additional members of the Project Prakash team are also authors of the paper.

Seeing in black and white

The researchers’ exploration of how early experience with color affects later object recognition grew out of a simple observation from a study of children who had their sight restored after being born with congenital cataracts. In 2005, Sinha launched Project Prakash (the Sanskrit word for “light”), an effort in India to identify and treat children with reversible forms of vision loss.

Many of those children suffer from blindness due to dense bilateral cataracts. This condition often goes untreated in India, which has the world’s largest population of blind children, estimated between 200,000 and 700,000.

Children who receive treatment through Project Prakash may also participate in studies of their visual development, many of which have helped scientists learn more about how the brain's organization changes following restoration of sight, how the brain estimates brightness, and other phenomena related to vision.

In this study, Sinha and his colleagues gave children a simple test of object recognition, presenting both color and black-and-white images. For children born with normal sight, converting color images to grayscale had no effect at all on their ability to recognize the depicted object. However, when children who underwent cataract removal were presented with black-and-white images, their performance dropped significantly.

This led the researchers to hypothesize that the nature of visual inputs children are exposed to early in life may play a crucial role in shaping resilience to color changes and the ability to identify objects presented in black-and-white images. In normally sighted newborns, retinal cone cells are not well-developed at birth, resulting in babies having poor visual acuity and poor color vision. Over the first years of life, their vision improves markedly as the cone system develops.

Because the immature visual system receives significantly reduced color information, the researchers hypothesized that during this time, the baby brain is forced to gain proficiency at recognizing images with reduced color cues. Additionally, they proposed, children who are born with cataracts and have them removed later may learn to rely too much on color cues when identifying objects, because, as they experimentally demonstrated in the paper, with mature retinas, they commence their post-operative journeys with good color vision.

To rigorously test that hypothesis, the researchers used a standard convolutional neural network, AlexNet, as a computational model of vision. They trained the network to recognize objects, giving it different types of input during training. As part of one training regimen, they initially showed the model grayscale images only, then introduced color images later on. This roughly mimics the developmental progression of chromatic enrichment as babies’ eyesight matures over the first years of life.

Another training regimen comprised only color images. This approximates the experience of the Project Prakash children, because they can process full color information as soon as their cataracts are removed.

The researchers found that the developmentally inspired model could accurately recognize objects in either type of image and was also resilient to other color manipulations. However, the Prakash-proxy model trained only on color images did not show good generalization to grayscale or hue-manipulated images.

“What happens is that this Prakash-like model is very good with colored images, but it’s very poor with anything else. When not starting out with initially color-degraded training, these models just don’t generalize, perhaps because of their over-reliance on specific color cues,” Lukas Vogelsang says.

The robust generalization of the developmentally inspired model is not merely a consequence of it having been trained on both color and grayscale images; the temporal ordering of these images makes a big difference. Another object-recognition model that was trained on color images first, followed by grayscale images, did not do as well at identifying black-and-white objects.

“It’s not just the steps of the developmental choreography that are important, but also the order in which they are played out,” Sinha says.

The advantages of limited sensory input

By analyzing the internal organization of the models, the researchers found that those that begin with grayscale inputs learn to rely on luminance to identify objects. Once they begin receiving color input, they don’t change their approach very much, since they’ve already learned a strategy that works well. Models that began with color images did shift their approach once grayscale images were introduced, but could not shift enough to make them as accurate as the models that were given grayscale images first.

A similar phenomenon may occur in the human brain, which has more plasticity early in life, and can easily learn to identify objects based on their luminance alone. Early in life, the paucity of color information may in fact be beneficial to the developing brain, as it learns to identify objects based on sparse information.

“As a newborn, the normally sighted child is deprived, in a certain sense, of color vision. And that turns out to be an advantage,” Diamond says.

Researchers in Sinha’s lab have observed that limitations in early sensory input can also benefit other aspects of vision, as well as the auditory system. In 2022, they used computational models to show that early exposure to only low-frequency sounds, similar to those that babies hear in the womb, improves performance on auditory tasks that require analyzing sounds over a longer period of time, such as recognizing emotions. They now plan to explore whether this phenomenon extends to other aspects of development, such as language acquisition.

The research was funded by the National Eye Institute of NIH and the Intelligence Advanced Research Projects Activity.

Researchers successfully develop next-gen semi-permanent battery technology

by DGIST (Daegu Gyeongbuk Institute of Science and Technology)

Beginning of energy innovation! DGIST successfully develops next-gen semi-permanent battery technology

A research team has successfully developed dual-site radioactive isotope dye-sensitized betavoltaic cells, a next-generation semi-permanent battery that does not require recharging.

The research team expects that this technology will be used as one of the critical technologies for driving Korea's future growth by helping the country achieve leadership in related materials, parts, and equipment to take the lead in the market in the future across various fields, such as space, deep sea, health care, electric vehicles, and drones.

The study is published in the Journal of Power Sources .

The growth of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, represented by the Internet of Things (IoT), cyber-physical systems, and artificial intelligence (AI), is gathering momentum quickly. While this rapid growth highlights the importance of battery technology as an energy source to enable platforms, it is becoming increasingly necessary to develop next-gen batteries due to limitations with the current commercially available battery technologies, including the rising cost of raw materials such as lithium and nickel, safety issues related to heat generation and durability, and limited performance in secondary batteries.

Recently, there has been growing interest in betavoltaic cells as next-gen batteries. A betavoltaic cell is a device that generates power when beta-ray electrons emitted from radioisotopes (e.g., carbon, nickel, and hydrogen) hit a semiconductor, which is a radiation absorber. Some of the biggest advantages of betavoltaic cells are that the cells can generate power on their own without requiring external power sources and replacement, and they have a semi-permanent lifespan due to the long half-life of radioisotopes.

Furthermore, beta rays, which serve as the main energy source of betavoltaic cells, are less hazardous to the human body than gamma rays and are highly stable. Due to these advantages, many studies have been conducted on betavoltaic cells in major countries, such as the United States and China. Nonetheless, many constraints make it difficult to develop the cells, including material costs and complex manufacturing processes and technologies.

In this context, a research team led by Professor Su-il In at the Department of Energy Science and Engineering at the Daegu Gyeongbuk Institute of Science & Technology (DGIST) conducted a study to develop betavoltaic cells with price competitiveness and high efficiency. Instead of using expensive semiconductor materials as radiation absorbers in betavoltaic cells, Lee's team utilized the N719 dye, which is in the ruthenium (Ru) group, the radioisotope 14- citric acid ( 14 CA), and titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ).

The research team synthesized the citric acid into carbon isotope nanoparticles to increase energy density and added the citric acid between the N719 dye and titanium dioxide to form a strong bond and subsequently achieve high energy conversion and stability.

Lee's team analyzed the performance of the dual-site radioactive isotope dye-sensitized betavoltaic cells that they newly developed. The analysis confirmed that the cells generated 658,500 times more electrons than they emitted and could stably generate power for 100 hours. Compared to betavoltaic cells developed by this research team in 2020, the newly developed cells' power conversion efficiency has increased 6 times and their stability 10 times.

Professor Su-il In at DGIST said, "This study holds significance as we have successfully developed a new type of betavoltaic cell based on an inexpensive dye. We will conduct follow-up research on the mass production design and mass production of nuclear batteries to commercialize the technology in the future."
