Having grown up in a world increasingly dependent on computers, I have witnessed the fast-paced innovative world that computer scientists work in. From a young age I have been following the advanced technical developments humanity has made in exciting fields such as AI and Robotics. I remember being in awe at what was possible with technology after seeing the footage in 2017 of Atlas, the robot made by Boston Dynamics, doing a backflip. The work conducted in Japan is equally, if not more, impressive, with the development of Pepper, the first robot designed to read emotions, in 2014. Watching what computer scientists make possible greatly inspires me and I believe a Masters in Computer Science at your university will help me enter a fascinating field.

I am on track to graduate from my undergraduate degree in Computer Science with a first. I have enjoyed studying the subject at this level and look forward to continuing to more advanced content.

Since school age I have been good at mathematical subjects. I believe that logical thinking comes naturally to me. During my teenage years I took an interest in self-assembling my own computer. This allowed me to explore the inner workings of computers and learn how each part fits together to work as a larger system. What I enjoy about computers is that behind the complex structures, it is just a lot of simple elements.

After working with the hardware side, I went on to explore software. I first became interested in the different operating systems available. I then went on to learn different coding languages, mainly Python, after starting a GCSE in Computing. I believe that coming from a multilingual family helped me learn coding languages. After finishing my GCSE course, I continued to develop my abilities in Python and began to read about other languages and their uses.

During the first year of my undergraduate I also had the fortunate opportunity to build a robot for the Robot Wars reboot with a team made up of my course mates. Not only was this a particularly valuable learning experience, but I greatly enjoyed the teamwork element of creation. Being able to bounce ideas off each other showed me just how exciting technological creation can be as you face a world of possibilities. Unfortunately, our robot did not win but we had a lot of fun and were able to learn from our mistakes.

Throughout my life my hobbies and qualifications have led up to a growing passion for computers. The world is becoming increasingly reliant on computers to help solve many of humanity’s problems. In addition, Computer Science also a fun medium to work with because of the many possibilities it presents. It is rare to find a field that is so vital to society and is extremely enjoyable and that is why I hope to work in a Computer Science field one day. I believe the education opportunities that this course can provide will help me get there.

This committee is made up of professors and industry professionals who are experts in the field of computer science. They will use your personal statement to determine whether or not you’re a good fit for their program.

How long should my computer science personal statement be?

Your computer science personal statement should be between 500 and 1000 words . This is enough space for you to introduce yourself, talk about your motivation for wanting to study computer science, and discuss your skills and experience.

Speaking in pages, your computer science personal statement should be one to two pages long . If your personal statement is longer than that, the admissions committee is likely to skim it, or even worse, not read it at all.

What should I include in my computer science personal statement?

There are a few things you will want to include in your computer science personal statement. In general, you should provide the admissions committee with convincing motivation and evidence that will portray you as someone both passionate and promising as a future computer science student.

Your personal statement may also include other information that you feel is important for the admissions committee to know about you. However, make sure that whatever you include is relevant to computer science and will help you stand out as a strong candidate.

What should I not write in my computer science personal statement?

Second, avoid including information that is not relevant to computer science . The admissions committee is looking for evidence that you’re passionate about computer science and have the skills and experience necessary to succeed in their program, so including information about your hobbies or extracurricular activities may not be the best way to go forward.

An exception to this is if you’re including information about extenuating circumstances that have impacted your academic performance, in which case you should briefly explain how these circumstances have affected you and why you’re still a strong candidate for their program.

Tips on writing a top-notch computer science personal statement

First, start by brainstorming a list of your computer science-related experiences, skills, and accomplishments . This will give you a good starting point for your personal statement and help you determine what information is most relevant to include.

“I have been programming since I was 12 years old, and ever since then I have been fascinated by the possibilities that computer science offers. I am motivated by the idea of being able to create something from scratch and see it come to life, and I know that computer science will allow me to do just that. In addition, I have experience in working with code from different languages, which has taught me how to think critically and solve problems. My skills in critical thinking and problem solving are essential for studying computer science, as they will allow me to tackle complex challenges head-on.

Last year, I also had the opportunity to intern at Lyft, where I worked on a team that developed a new feature for the Lyft app. This experience was invaluable, as it gave me insights into the inner workings of one of the world’s most successful companies. It also showed me how computer science can be used to solve real-world problems.

“I have always been interested in the way computers work and how they can be used to solve problems. This interest began when I was very young and has continued to grow as I have gotten older. My father is a computer scientist, so I have been exposed to computer science my entire life. In high school, I took several computer science courses and really enjoyed them. I also competed in several programming competitions and did well in them. In the following essay, I want to highlight my accomplishments as a computer science candidate and express my passion for this exciting field.

I am a computer science major at *NAME* University. I have taken several computer science courses and have gotten exceptional grades. My favorite course so far has been Introduction to Algorithms, for which I worked as a teaching assistant during my third year. This experience showed me that I have the ability to solve complex problems and work well under pressure.

I am applying to your program specifically because I believe that it will allow me to further develop my skills in computer science. I am looking forward to taking classes from renowned professors and working with other talented students. I believe that your program will provide me with the skills and knowledge that I need to become a successful computer scientist.”

“Computers have always been a part of my life. As a toddler, I would watch my father work on computer programs for his business. Fascinated by the blinking cursor on the screen, I would ask him what he was doing and how it worked. My parents bought me my first computer when I was in grade school and I taught myself how to program in BASIC.

One of my biggest accomplishments in the field of computer science so far has been developing a computer program that can generate 3D models of human faces. This program has the potential to be used in a variety of applications, such as video game development, computer-aided design, and even law enforcement. I am currently working on submitting this program to a computer science conference for publication.

I believe that my passion for computer science, as well as my experience in the field, makes me an ideal candidate for a graduate program in computer science. I am excited to continue learning and expanding my skills in computer science so that I can make an impact in this field. For this reason, I am excited to submit an early decision application to your computer science graduate program.”

What should I do after I have my first draft?

2. Proofread and edit it : This step is crucial. A well-written and error-free computer science personal statement will make you look more professional and competent. Use spell check and grammar check , and then have someone else proofread it for you.

4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 as needed : After you’ve received feedback, make the necessary changes to your computer science personal statement. Then, proofread and edit it again. Repeat this cycle until you’re happy with your statement.

5. Modify personal statement for each program : Don’t just submit the same computer science personal statement to every program you apply to. Tailor it to each individual program, highlighting why you’re a good fit for that specific school.

Example Computer Science Personal Statement

My first experiences with mathematics throughout school were always enjoyable but not inspiring. While I loved working with maths, and enjoyed representing our school in both the UKMT and Hans Woyda team competitions, I felt that maths could not be the end-in-itself the school syllabus presented it as. As I progressed through secondary education, however, I began to really see it as the powerful tool to understand and structure reality that it is.

The first time I saw that my interpretation of the use of maths had some substance was during a work experience placement I organised at IMSO (International Mobile Satellite Organization). There I encountered some examples of the mathematical and computing problems involved in working with satellites: from the difference between the Euclidean geometry on a map and the Elliptical geometry on a globe, to the logistics of moving satellites around to meet demand while keeping them in orbit. These were problems that demanded much more than mere number crunching, and being exposed to this gave me a taste of what maths beyond school might involve. A second work experience spell at Siemens provided me a much more in-depth view of the important role that communication systems play in keeping a company running efficiently and effectively.

My passion for mathematics and computing was further extended while reading ‘The Magical Maze’ by Ian Stewart. The description of maths as the exploration of a maze of our own creation had an incredibly profound effect on my understanding of what research in mathematics involves. What interested me especially was the visual part of resolving problems, so that they did not rely completely on resolving long calculations. This was close to how I like to understand and explain my ideas in mathematics.

Douglas Hofstadter’s ‘Gödel, Escher, Bach’ gave me a much deeper understanding of the axiomatic systems that make up maths and how parallels can be drawn between different subjects to gain a further understanding of them all. Connected by the theme of Gödel’s Incompleteness Theorem, the author passes through seemingly unrelated topics, such as the problem of consciousness and the mathematics of Zen principles, to explain the theorem. Although not the focus of the book, I have also enjoyed reading the links that are presented between maths and computing; it seems to me that maths is not just related to computing – computing is the physical manifestation of mathematics.

Maths and computing are about describing mental processes in a precise, logical way. The rigour required for mathematical proof leaves little room for subjectivity: something can be proven, disproven or unproven, but this depends completely on the validity of your logic. The idea of being able to extract order from apparent chaos, working through concepts until they click is what I love about these subjects, and what has attracted me to take those as an integral part of my further education.

However passionate I am about my academic studies, I also enjoy being involved in extracurricular activities. As head of mentoring and a prefect, I have improved my organizational abilities working with staff and mentors in developing study programmes for those students requiring extra help. Completing the Duke of Edinburgh bronze award – now working on the silver award – has allowed me to practice and develop my leadership and teamwork skills.

In my spare time I enjoy playing tennis, skiing and swimming; the latter I practice at competition level. I also love travelling, as having spent my childhood in Denmark, Egypt, United Kingdom and Spain has given me a hunger for mixing with different cultures. I like to unwind by playing the piano – I find that the pleasure one derives from making a piece your own is one that few activities can match.

I am thrilled about the prospect of further study in these subjects with some of the leading professors in the fields, and look forward to participating in university life.

Good Points Of The Personal Statement

This is a well-written, structured statement. The student explains their reasons to pursue a dual-honours degree and gives equal attention to both disciplines to which they are applying. The student adds personality to the statement by thoroughly explaining their own views on all of the examples of literature read around maths and computing.

Bad Points Of The Personal Statement

There are quite a lot of short paragraphs. The student could have saved space by consolidating some paragraphs into one, hence shortening the statement. The student starts three paragraphs with ‘My’ or ‘In my’. This is quite repetitive. There are too many paragraphs, seven in total. Paragraphs five and six could be shortened and grouped into one paragraph. In the third paragraph, it appears as though the student has either forgotten to add an addition space (in order to start a new paragraph) or has incorrectly started a new line for the sentence ‘Douglas Hofstadter’s…’.

UniAdmissions Overall Score:

This is a very good statement. The student has clearly achieved a lot and writes in a clear and easy-to-understand way. Attention is given to both maths and computer sciences, which is essential as the student is applying for a dual honours course. With some restructuring, this could be an excellent statement.

This Personal Statement for Computer Science is a great example of how to tackle applying to two different degrees or dual honours. The candidate’s interest and achievements are clearly shown which is vital to Admissions Tutors.

Remember, at Oxford, these Admissions Tutors are often the people who will be teaching you for the next few years, so you need to appeal directly to them.

The following personal statement is written by an applicant who got accepted to the master’s program in computer science. Variations of this personal statement got accepted at the University of Utah, Stanford and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Read this essay to understand what a top personal statement in CS should look like.

Sample Personal Statement in Computer Science

While SpaceX was launching satellites into space, my country was hoping for another loan from World Bank. I, for one, wondered when power outages would end in my home country. The delipidated condition of my country made me value the small things in life – from dreaming with my siblings about our future to just lying in the backyard gazing into the very depths of space, determined to make ourselves proud. Though my family comes from humble beginnings, my parents left no obstacle unturned to educate us. My father’s love for technology and education grew stronger with age and time. I still remember when he purchased a Pentium-1 for us, the first computer in my family and perhaps in my neighborhood. Almost every week, it needed repair because of our doings, but he kept encouraging us.

Inspired by my passion for technology, I applied to the topmost computer science undergrad program. My parents were overjoyed when I was accepted because I was the first in my family to attend college. One month into my undergrad, I founded “The CS Media Club,” a society with a vision to share success stories of software developers. It was the same time the following year when I handed over the elective office of the President to the freshmen students. For me, it was the start of a versatile voyage, an inherent determination to change lives, which fostered other ventures. Eventually, I volunteered as Brand Ambassador for International Youth Coding Challenge (IYCC). Under IYCC, I vowed to promote coding competitions among students. Again, I received an overwhelming response. Gradually this initiative expanded into astronomy and astrophysics, which still gives me goosebumps.

I faced many financial and academic challenges, and I had two options: either give up my education or don my diligence glasses to compete with the best. I chose the latter. Hence started my struggle as a freelance programmer. As a freelancer, I built lasting relationships with clients and enriched my communication skills. In addition, the soft skills I learned boosted my confidence to participate in MUN Conferences. I also leveraged my confidence and took two paid summer internships with Google and Apple. This provided real-life coding experience, amplified my interpersonal skills, and revamped my career path.

So, this journey from lying and looking into the depths of the space to now typing this essay in Microsoft’s office is full of adventures and emotions. All the years of hard work landed me a dream job with Microsoft, but like my late grandfather used to say, it is always lonely at the top. Thus, my inner self urges me to excel further and bring world-class coding and development knowledge to my home country.

We have a vast talent pool but not enough guidance and opportunities. My college professor often called our young minds the ambitious unguided missiles. I want to change this narrative and become a symbol of hope for many like me. I aim to join academia and research to guide the youth. I also want to establish a community of young developers and form research alliances with other organizations in exchange for ideas. This way, I hope to bring reality to some other kid aiming to build something wondrous for his home country under the fading light of our home.

This is a real personal statement written by a student for their university application. It might help you decide what to include in your own. There are lots more examples in our .

I have always been interested in computers as a hobby, stemming from my fascination with information technology. I regularly read local and overseas-based technology or IT-related websites, weblogs and online forums to follow or discuss developments in the IT industry and computer technology. I found that computers and information technology are closely related and computer software and hardware technologies are constantly evolving at a rapid rate of creative innovation.

During my degree course, I usually proposed technology-related topics for my mass communication module projects to build on my own self interest and knowledge. The projects included a write-up on computer virus threats and the Y2K bug for the news feature writing module and for the social research module, my proposed group project was on university students’ perceptions on the use of P2P file-sharing programs and their impact on music CD sales. From these projects, I learnt about the importance of running secure computer networks and intellectual property rights concerns now that technology has enabled the digitisation of media and global connectivity via the Internet.

Outside of studies, I held positions as the webmaster for an online computer gaming clan I was part of and my university campus’ International Students’ Association as I had developed an interest in web design, having first learnt HTML through self study and later through a web design course where I learnt to use Dreamweaver and Flash. I got to learn of the Internet’s potential as a form of new media for mass communication and entertainment. An aspect I am keen to explore further is the application of computers and the Internet as a mass media and marketing tool with the recent growth in popularity of web applications.

In my current job, I have been assigned duties outside of my actual job scope which require some degree of knowledge about computers. One such responsibility is as a system monitor, ensuring proper usage of the hotel’s sales and catering database management system. Additionally, I design queries to generate sales production reports required by the management. As an event manager, I excel at handling technology events as I am able to understand and work with the conference organisers’ requirements. I have successfully handled events like the 5th annual State of Play Conference and the 2007 IEEE International Conference on Ultra-Wideband. I learnt about the importance of teamwork and time management, good interpersonal communication skills and managing with tight deadlines all of which I am sure are applicable to academic life too.

Outside of work, I like to travel as it is an opportunity to see new places and learn about other countries’ culture, history and people. To de-stress, I play video games, read books and draw. I also sometimes undertake a personal project during my free time and one was to build my own desktop computer. I enjoyed the entire process, especially researching how to go about it and the hardware compatibility for the configuration I wanted, as well as troubleshooting.

Looking back at these experiences, I now want to learn about information technology in further detail and to pursue a career in the IT industry. By taking an MSc in Information Technology conversion course, my goal is to gain the proper academic grounding required for an IT job. I also want to expand on my IT knowledge, particularly for web and software development, with an aim to complement it with the knowledge from my undergraduate degree.

What to include in your computer science statement

A strong opening: explain succinctly where your enthusiasm for computer science comes from, and why – but avoid the temptation to begin with a potted history describing when you got your first computer!
How you're engaged with the subject: talk about what’s inspiring you or motivating you to study it, whether it’s a relevant book or news articles you’ve read, or maybe a bit of programming you've done.
An understanding of what's involved: tutors love to read statements where your enthusiasm for the subject comes across, alongside a clear sense that you understand what computer science as a discipline is all about. Don't actually tell them what it is – they know that already. Show them that you know.
Your personal goals: what are you hoping to achieve by studying this subject for the next three to four years?
Show you're a team player: according to the engineering and computer science department at Durham University, 'try to write about how you work with others. Have you been part of a team or led a team? Have you had to organise something complex such as an event, a play or a football league?'

Computer science personal statement pitfalls

Not standing out: Professor Lowe from the University of Oxford says that lots of the personal statements he sees 'are similar, bland, impersonal and don’t stand out – so make it personal, specific, and concrete'.
Using clichés: avoid phrases such as 'computers are important in the modern world' or just saying 'I’m fascinated by artificial intelligence' without explaining why.
Quoting Wikipedia: 'We already know what computer science is so we don’t need a Wikipedia definition. We’re interested in your understanding of it and your desire to learn', Robert Zimmer from Goldsmiths adds.

Engagement with the subject

Admissions tutors at University of Portsmouth and University of Warwick both agreed that clichés like ‘I want to do computing because it’s the future’ or opening lines like ‘I got my first computer when I was three’ are a big turn-off.

However, they do like to see evidence of your most recent engagement with the subject, or something current that’s inspired you. In fact, the kind of statement that would really hit the mark would include your reflections on some or all of the following:

a programme you wrote or side project you've been working on
an internship or some relevant work experience you did
how your studies or wider reading have boosted your understanding or sparked your curiosity
your opinions on a key topic such as data privacy
any extracurricular interests that have given you relevant transferable skills
an area or module you're particularly looking forward to studying. Something along those lines should engage the tutor reading your statement

Computer Science

Computer Science is increasingly taking a more important part in our lives, at home, at work or during our leisure time. I’m keen to understand the impacts of evolution of Computer Science: learning how artificial intelligence, machine learning or pattern recognition would influence our future lifestyle are few examples of exciting areas to focus on. Studying Computer Science will equip me to embrace lateral thinking which could help solve every-day life problems and consequently extend my expertise post graduation to model scenarios and build products aimed at the consumer market.

As most inquisitive teenagers, I also love playing video games on the computer and gaming devices and this intrigued me to take up programming as a hobby. I have watched various tutorials on the Internet to improve my Visual Basic language skills, especially when I started to learn the language in 2012. I have also done some simple algorithms on Algobox at school in Mathematics. The book “Introduction to Computing” by David Evans is compelling and left me with a balanced view on the subject and filled me with enthusiasm to pursue a degree in Computer Science. I find that computing is appealing because of its forever expanding domain and its constant evolution. This characteristic is very important in my opinion, especially as I am motivated by changes and improvements. It’s also an important factor because it adds more diversity and encourages adaptability in the computing industry on the whole. I have studied both in the English system and French system and therefore feel that my capacity to adapt is quite high which is beneficial in computing as is a mathematical background. I am good at Mathematics and Physics largely because I am logical by nature and enjoy solving computing problems. I always rise to the challenges that I face and research how to solve the issue however long it takes. Sometimes, this means starting from scratch but I am always determined to achieve the end results and strive towards my goals. I believe those are important skills for becoming a Computer Science engineer. <p> I have already had a small taste of the world of a computer engineer during my work experience at Deutsche Bank. During this experience, I learned about graphics, audio engineering and multimedia activities which increased my interest in pursuing a degree in computing: I learned a lot, even made my own video and I also really enjoyed myself. It was a really valuable and interesting opportunity!

In my spare time, I enjoy swimming and working out. I go to my local gym at the Merton leisure centre. This ensures that I have a balanced lifestyle and stay fit and active as well. I often enjoy individual sports, which shows that I am autonomous. However, I do like working in a group as well and I have often worked in a team at my school and usually volunteer to take the leading. This has made me discover that I have strong leadership skills, which is necessary in computing because you need to work well as an individual as well as in a team.

Computing is my passion and what I want to do for a living after university. I am confident that my enthusiasm and strong determination will be valuable assets throughout my journey to graduation at your university.

Graduate School Statement of Purpose

Criteria for success.

Your statement of purpose, sometimes referred to by other names including “statement of objectives,” should…

convince a faculty committee that you are qualified for their program and that you are a good fit for their program’s focus and goals.
show a select group of skills and experiences that convey your scientific and technical accomplishments and interests.
include concrete and quantitative experiences, accomplishments, and qualifications.
adhere to the length and formatting guidelines of the program to which you are applying (usually no more than 2 pages).

Structure Diagram

The graduate school statement of purpose should strengthen your chance of acceptance into a graduate program by demonstrating that you are a good match for the particular department or program. Matching goes both ways: they should be interested in you, and you should be interested in them. Your statement should make this match clear by telling your personal story as a researcher.

Analyze Your Audience

Your statement of purpose is typically read by a graduate committee, a handful of faculty from your program. They’re trying to determine if you will be a successful graduate student in their department, a positive force in the department’s intellectual life, and a successful researcher after you graduate. They are therefore interested in your qualifications as a researcher, your career goals, and how your academic focus matches their labs and department.

The graduate committee could read hundreds of applications a year. To make it easy for them to figure out that you are a good fit, make direct, concrete statements about your accomplishments and qualifications. To make it easy for them to remember you, create a narrative that “brands” you.

Create a personal narrative

PhD programs invest in the professional and technical growth of their students. Get the committee excited about investing in you by opening your essay with a brief portrait of what drives you as a scientist or engineer. What research directions are you passionate about, and why? What do you picture yourself doing in 10 years?

If you’re not quite sure what you want to do in graduate school, it’s still best to focus on a specific area or topic in your application. What would you work on if you had to start graduate school tomorrow? You can always change your research focus later.

Any personal stories should fit in the overall narrative of your research story. Avoid cliche openings like “ever since my childhood, I’ve been fascinated by…”. The statement of purpose, sometimes called a personal statement, is “personal” in the sense that it tells your unique research story, not your life story.

Close your essay with a 2-3 sentence discussion of your career interests. No one will hold you to these plans; it simply helps your committee visualize your potential trajectory. Emphasize how the program you are applying to will help prepare you for these long-term goals.

Describe your experiences

Experiences are the “what” of your essay. What experiences led you to develop your skill set and passions? Where have you demonstrated accomplishment, leadership, and collaboration? Include research, teaching, and relevant work experience or extracurriculars. State concrete achievements and outcomes like awards, publications, or projects completed.

Achievements do not need to be directly tied to research projects or publications. However, they should relate to the type of work you expect in graduate school. For example, you can discuss significant, research-oriented class projects. Describe any collaborations with senior students or faculty that demonstrate your passion about relevant research topics. Computer science students can discuss projects from software internships that involved architecture design, algorithm design, security considerations, machine learning, etc. These experiences can inform your academic interests and demonstrate ability as well as more formal research experience. Also consider including experiences that demonstrate other skills that are crucial for a successful grad student such as good communication and self-motivation.

Quantify your experiences to show concrete impact. How many people were on your team? How many protocols did you develop? How many people were in competition for an award? As a TA, how often did you meet with your students?

Describe actions, not just changes in your internal mental or emotional state. A statement of purpose is a way to make a narrative out of your CV. It is not a diary entry


During this project, my mind was opened to the possibility of using different programming languages together to create code that is faster to run and easier to understand and modify.	During this project, I collaborated with other group members to develop a user-friendly Python wrapper for a 10,000-line Fortran library.
I showed initiative in my second project in the lab.	Inspired by a question that arose during my first project, I proposed a new research direction to the postdoc and PI of my lab.
During my first year, I became a more curious and capable scientist.	I explored the literature and proposed two alternative algorithms to make the experiment efficient.
I won the Electrical Engineering department’s Caroline S. Berenstain prize.	I won the Electrical Engineering department’s prize for top student among my cohort of 20 students.
I learned about the role of regularization in machine learning.	I quantified the performance of three different regularization methods for the regression model used in our image processing pipeline.

Explain the meaning of your experiences

Meaning is the “why” or “so what” of the document. Why was this experience important to your growth as a researcher? What does it say about your abilities and potential? It feels obvious to you, but you need to be explicit with your audience. Your descriptions of meaning should also act as transition statements between experiences: try to “wrap” meaning around your experiences.

Demonstrate match to your target program

Demonstrate an understanding of the program to which you’re applying and about how you will be successful in that program. To do this:

Read the program’s website. See what language they use to describe themselves, and echo that language in your essay. For example, the website for MIT’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory displays three main research areas and the values of the lab .
In some areas (often those with a more rigid lab structure), reaching faculty is very important. You should know what faculty members are taking new students and whether or not you would be a fit for their lab before applying. In other areas, contacting faculty is not expected and may be difficult. Reach out if in doubt and consult current graduate students, undergraduate professors, or graduate admissions officers if you are unsure what is typical in your area.
State which professors in the program you would plan to work with. Show how their research areas align with your background and your goals. You can even describe potential research directions or projects. It can also be helpful to mention other departments or groups at the university that you might be interested in collaborating with or learning from.

In my free time, I enjoy playing football and reading books. I find that these activities help me to relax and to maintain a healthy work-life balance.

Chemistry and Physics have both helped to improve my analytical and evaluative skills. Within maths I have been lucky enough to have a teacher who was very interested in computer science. He has been especially helpful, lending me books such as Gödel, Escher, Bach: an Eternal Golden Braid. This has given me an insight into the richness that is computer science.

My interest in computing has not been restricted to the classroom and college life. Within the last twelve months I’ve used the knowledge that I’ve gained over the past twelve years together with the help of my family to set up my own computer related business. This has given me a totally new perspective on how certain things function, and how business operates.

The writing of a business plan was a totally alien experience for me, but over the course of 9 months I researched and planned, and finally when the plan was complete I was rewarded with the satisfaction of knowing that I had completed something that most people would never have the chance to do especially at my age.

Through the setting up of the company and its subsequent running I have learnt many things. These include how to balance tasks effectively, how critical teamwork can be and how to delegate tasks to get the job done quickly and efficiently.

As well as spending time both studying and helping to run the business I understand the importance of having time to relax. One of my hobbies that I try to make time for is learning to fly, and gaining my private pilots license.

As a child I dreamed of becoming a pilot and luckily its one dream that I’ve managed to follow. I love the freedom that flying gives you and the control that you have when in the air. Training for my private pilots license (PPL) has also involved me taking onboard a lot of responsibility for the safety of those onboard, and those around the aircraft.

From ensuring that I carry out the pre-flight checks correctly, and knowing what’s around you both while you’re on the ground and in the air to ensuring that I’m prepared for any eventuality.

I also enjoy both playing and watching tennis. I’ve played in various competitions before, and have helped to umpire junior matches at my club. To ensure that I can fit everything in I’ve had to develop very good time management, prioritising what I need to do efficiently.

I’m looking forward with great anticipation to the challenges that studying for a degree in computer science will bring.

Sentences are too attenuated...Grammatical reconstruction is required...In other words, some sentences are too long and muddled. They can confuse the reader. Just my 2 cents...BLE$$.

overall this is good, although the first paragraph leaves a lot to be desired. the first line is grammatically incorrect, and the following two are clumsy. i can see why cambridge wouldn't have liked this.

first impressions are key with a personal statement, it is very like an interview in this respect.

You are obviously interested in the subject area, but you could have done it much more concisely.

With 100's of application to read, admissions aren't looking for your life's history. A short and to the point statement will work as well if not better.

Competent but standard, bland and boring. Admissions tutors receive hundreds of applications like this daily and this does not stand out from the crowd at all. It is, in fact, more of an archetype for a run of the mill application, encapsulating everything that everyone else will have included in theirs. Small wonder Cambridge declined you. Computer Science Personal Statement

This subject interests me because I am always using computers and have been using them from such a young age and I own many different computer interfaces from desktop computers to tablets and I enjoy using them. I think I’m suitable for this course because I have a passion for computer programming.

The only skill I have for coding is taking part in a course called ” An Hour of Code” on a website called code.org . They teach you the very basics of programming and how enjoyable it could be to program. I am very creative, calm in stressful environments, and a good problem solver. My maths is good and I enjoy maths a lot, I also enjoy challenging myself.

I have worked as a Teaching Assistant at my old primary school for work experience when I was studying in Secondary School, preparing documentations and presentations for senior staff.

After I complete the course, I wish to work in software engineering. By using the knowledge gained from this course, such as learning to program and use a programming language such as JavaScript and work with successful major companies such as Apple, designing software and applications is what I want to do.

The current course I am studying is BTEC extended applied Science Level 3.

I am a hardworking and highly motivated individual as I ensure that I keep all my assignments up to date and ensure they are submitted on time. I received mostly merits and distinctions on my assignments during the first year of my course. I received a Merit in Unit 8 which was mostly maths and statistical analysis.

My attendance is excellent, showing I am motivated as I always attend college to learn and gain more knowledge. Assignments are always in on time ensuring that I never miss the deadline for the assignments and done to the best ofmy ability showing how hardworking I am. I am also a multilingual, able to speak two additional languages fluently (Swedish and Luganda).

I was born in Sweden and lived for eight years then moved to the United Kingdom but travelled back to Sweden throughout my childhood visiting my eldest sibling, childhood friends, and other family relatives.

The first time when I used a PC, it made me become more intrigued to see how these interfaces function, the technology behind computer interfaces and the philosophy of how they function. I would like to learn how software is developed. I think that it’s astonishing to look as the advanced transformation of technology shapes society; there is such a great amount to still be discovered.

The universe of computing is developing at an incredible rate each day, computers are the most influential and widely used tools in our lives. As I would like to think nothing on earth can gauge the exponential development and energy software industry, which I wish to be involved in, especially Software Engineering.

I am aiming to concentrate on a processing related subject as I feel that computers are extremely important in all occupations and ordinary life. In the course of recent years, I have added to an incredible enthusiasm for software engineering, programming advancement, and the IT business. I have a strong enthusiasm for processing and computer interface related frameworks and innovation.

At a young age I used to appreciate dismantling things to perceive how they function, and my enthusiasm for computer interfaces peaked especially when I was young, as time went and new innovation was produced by significant organizations, for example, Apple and Microsoft.

For as long as I can remember, my era of gaming started from when I was 3 years old. The first console I started to play video games on was the Nintendo-64. From that moment on, I figured that video games were an integral part of my life leading to my happiness and well-being. I was constantly aware and in touch with the updates in technology of video game consoles from the N-64 to present day Playstation-4. Throughout this journey of gaming, I was impressed of how video games started to develop. Consequently, these developments drove me towards the career path I seek i.e Computer Science. Whether it be the retro games including Contra or Mario or the new-age Call-Of-Duty, these games have come to existence through extensive programming and cutting-edge technology. So, I believed that computer science was the basic foundation of this subject. Moreover, I wanted to be part of this development, so I decided to pursue my education in the field of Computer Science.

Later in my life, I developed an interest in a particular aspect of Computer Science- AI. This interest first started with EA Sport’s FIFA. Me playing almost all the games through FIFA 09 to the current FIFA 20, I was familiar with the changes and updates that the game was going through and the major incorporation of Artificial Intelligence into the game. FIFA now has an intelligence system that uses AI to make the game more realistic enabling players to make decisions with a more interactive gameplay. Another development that riveted me towards AI was the Xbox-360 kinect. The software in this system made it a break-through development. The system contains a special machine-learning algorithm that allows the Kinect to map the visual data it collects to models representing people and their gestures. Consequently, I developed an interest in Artificial Intelligence and wanted to explore this field in depth.

Continuing my endeavour in the field of AI, I started to get more familiar with the subject. Learning the concepts of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning in my undergrad was an important milestone in the path I seek. Plunging deeper into the field, I started to explore the avenues of AI and found Cyber Security on my radar. This was through the discovery that one of the most essential usages of AI was in the field of Cyber Security. Whether it be protecting gamers from potential hackers, or organisations from cyber attacks, cyber security is needed and AI is an essential application in providing security. This was when I realised that there was a synergy between both. It was after an internship in the domain of Cyber Security (which I took in my 3rd year) that has reinforced my interest.

Hence, I decided to pursue a Master’s Course in Computer Science with an emphasis on AI and Cyber Security.

Undergraduate Coursework:

Throughout my undergrad, I was exposed to various concepts of computer science.

These include the fundamentals such as Design and Analysis of Algorithms, Data Structures and Programming Language Pragmatics. In addition, I am also familiar with programming languages including Python, C Programming and Java. I have applied the theoretical knowledge gained in my academic projects and attended workshops to gain a significant practical understanding of the subject such as ‘LINUX Shell Scripting’ Workshop and ‘Big Data Analytics’ hosted by IBM,Hyderabad.

I also studied subjects like Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Computer Networks, Cryptography and Network Security which defined the field of study I started to develop an interest in. Moreover, these subjects have improved my association with the field of AI and Cyber Security.

Exposure to these subjects in my undergraduate has left me with an excellent foundation in Computer Science along with a keen interest to explore further in this field.

After my second year, my interest in Artificial Intelligence led me to research in this field.

I along with a friend of mine under the guidance of Mrs. Radha (Senior faculty in CSE) worked on a review paper which deals with how machine learning works in Autonomous Vehicles in choosing the correct path in order to maximize safety. The study of various path planning techniques such as ‘Dirichlet tessellation technique for Real-time Motion Planning’ and ‘Evidential Occupancy Grid for Trajectory Planning’ formed the basis of our research. Our 1 month research led us to successfully getting our paper titled “Integration of Artificial Intelligence in Autonomous Vehicles for efficient Path Planning” published in “IJCSN – International Journal of Computer Science and Network, Volume 8, Issue 4, August 2019 ISSN (Online) : 2277-5420 www.IJCSN.org”.

Further, during the summer vacation after my 3rd year, I took up an internship at BluSapphire Cyber Systems Pvt. Ltd. The main purpose of this internship was to expose myself to the real world applications of Cyber Security and indulge more deeply into the field. Throughout my internship at BluSapphire , I have learnt about many essential fundamentals including NetStat, firewalls, honeypots , dockers, malwares, cyberattacks and types of cyberattacks and the role of OSI layers in Security. I was also involved in parallel mastering of Python and its implementation via Jupiter Notebook. Now, I was very keen on the applications of the theory(i.e the concepts) which I learnt. Acknowledging my interest, I was tasked with a project that focused on the extraction and exchange of Cyber Threat Intelligence(CTI). During my work on this project, I had gathered CTI in the form of STIX(Structured threat Intelligence Expression) files which I was able to extract and exchange via a TAXII(Trusted Automated Exchange of Intelligence Information) server. I also developed a Python Script that queried, extracted and exchanged CTI which proved to be a very efficient solution to the task I was provided. Upon completion of this internship, I was left with a good knowledge in the field of cyber security and finishing the project gave me an opportunity for future research in this field.

Apart from my professional work, I was always engaged and made time for extracurricular activities. I was the Cultural Secretary for the student body “Kalakriti” in my college. I held this position for 2 years (1st year and 2nd year) and organised many literary, technical , and cultural fests and programs. Besides my duty as the Cultural Secretary, I was also involved in dance and music. I was part of the music band during the annual fest and played the Piano. I also performed on stage as a dancer in various fests including the annual fest and GMUN(Global Model United Nations. Dancing and music is only 50% of my extracurricular involvements. The other half is sports. My immense passion for soccer led me to participate in many intra and inter college soccer competitions as one of the main forwards on the pitch. Our soccer team also Won ‘Runner’s Up’ (2nd Place) in the Intra College Football Competition held during the 1st semester of our second year. In addition to these extracurricular activities I always spend time playing video games , beat-boxing, and reading books as part of my regular hobbies. I love to enlighten myself by reading inspiring novels about successful people such as Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, and Phil Knight. My love for video games compounded with my duty as the cultural secretary has also led me to host a gaming fest during 2nd year called ‘LA ELVITIA’ , where we brought our own PS4s and XBOX 360s along with the PCs provided by the college to set-up competitions among gamers in various games that included FIFA, Call-of-duty, and Counter-Strike.

Career goals and why I chose xxx University.

After my Master’s , I plan to work in an organisation that gives me the opportunity to exploit the knowledge I will gain through grad school and provide me with a job that emphasises on my area of interest as well as contribute to the growth of that organisation.

I also plan to join research in academia or industry to further broaden my horizons in the field of Computer Science with the hope to make contributions in this field.

From my past experiences, I observed that I can work relentlessly when I learn something new or when I am associated with a subject I am passionate about such as Integration of AI and Cyber Security.

The two main reasons for my ambition to pursue Master’s in Computer Science at xxx University are:
