Ranking Journals: Academic Journal Guide 2021 (“ABS List”)

The influential Chartered Association of Business Scholars has just published its Academic Journal Guide 2021 (“ABS list”). What does this mean for the operations and supply chain management (OSCM) research community? I have looked at the ranks for 15 major OSCM journals.

Once again, only the following OSCM journals were classified in category 4*: Journal of Operations Management , Management Science and Operations Research . To be honest, I wonder if the asterisk is really still appropriate for Operations Research .

The following OSCM journals were given a 4 in the 2021 ABS list: European Journal of Operational Research , International Journal of Operations & Production Management , Journal of Supply Chain Management and Production & Operations Management . This is good news for our discipline, because it means that the Journal of Supply Chain Management has moved up into this important category. However, it would have been time to give this journal not just a 4, but a 4*.

The following OSCM journals were given a grade of 3: Decision Sciences , International Journal of Production Economics , Journal of Business Logistics , Journal of Purchasing & Supply Management , Manufacturing & Service Operations Management and Supply Chain Management: An International Journal . Here, there are even two new entries: Journal of Business Logistics and Journal of Purchasing & Supply Management . While this is good news for both logistics and procurement scholars, I would have expected Journal of Business Logistics and Manufacturing & Service Operations Management to rank even higher.

The International Journal of Physical Distribution & Logistics Management lands at a 2 and the International Journal of Logistics Management lands at a 1 again. The low scores for these two journals in the 2021 ABS list are particularly strange given their quality.

My conclusion: The team behind the 2021 Academic Journal Guide appears to have listened – at least partly – to the harsh criticism from OSCM scholars. Although our discipline is certainly still underrated, compared to many other disciplines, there are finally some bright spots that give OSCM researchers a little more air to breathe. Empirically-focused OSCM journals were particularly disadvantaged by the ABS list in the past and three of them have now been upgraded. This step was overdue.

This slightly positive development for our discipline should not hide the harmful effects of rankings in general . Academia is increasingly about metrics rather than content. Assessment committees, bonus decisions and tenure-track regulations are increasingly about counting the names of certain journals per year – instead of reading them. The REF system in the UK has turned academic debate (i.e., quality) into a “race for points” (i.e., quantity) in the home country of the ABS list. This is a very negative development.

Therefore, it is gratifying that more and more universities are signing the San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment (DORA), which asks “not [to] use journal-based metrics […] as a surrogate measure of the quality of individual research articles, to assess an individual scientist’s contributions, or in hiring, promotion, or funding decisions”.

Rightly said, few bright spots and some interesting misses too…. IJPDLM is certainly one of them. I am also of the view that the grading and ranking should be based on the intellectual merit rather than the publications in ranked journals

' src=

Your summary of the rankings is right on, Andreas. Thank you. It is good to see come upward movement on the rankings of our best journals. IJPDLM an IJLM are puzzling– and each should have moved up at least one position. JBL and JPSM should have both moved up more– but think this committee does not want to move any journal more than one position.

' src=

I have no idea why EJOR is ranked a “4”. Should be closer to a “2”. JBL is also top tier. Good points with IJPDLM and IJLM. Fully agree with have a flawed system in evaluating research impact. It is only getting worse.

' src=

A quick look at the editorial board of M&SOM would convince that it is a top journal – editors come for all top US schools. Sad to see Universities in many European countries still do not consider it a top outlet. Also surprised to see EJOR in the top. My two cents, of course…

The editorial board of M&SOM comprises top researchers from top US Schools. How it can be considered to be not a top journal is beyond me…

Yemen's Houthis Say They Conducted Six Operations in Red Sea and Indian Ocean

Yemen's Houthis Say They Conducted Six Operations in Red Sea and Indian Ocean

CAIRO (Reuters) - Yemen's Houthis conducted six operations targeting a U.S. aircraft carrier, a U.S. destroyer and three vessels in the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean, the Iranian-backed group's military spokesperson Yahya Saree said on Saturday.

The Houthi militia, which controls the most populous parts of Yemen and is aligned with Iran, has attacked ships off its coast for months, saying it is acting in solidarity with Palestinians fighting Israel in Gaza.

The group "targeted the American aircraft carrier, the Eisenhower, north of the Red Sea, with a number of missiles and drones," Saree said, adding it was "the second targeting operation against the carrier during the past 24 hours."

The spokesperson also added that the other operations have targeted a U.S. destroyer and the ABLIANI ship in the Red Sea, along with "the MAINA ship that has been targeted twice in the Red Sea and in the Arabian Sea as well."

Additionally, "the ship ALORAIQ has been targeted in the Indian Ocean," he added.

The Houthi fighters' drone and missile strikes have been aimed at the Bab al-Mandab Strait and the Gulf of Aden.

That has forced shippers since November to re-route cargo on longer and more expensive journeys around southern Africa.

Online shoppers behave differently after chatting with staff of the opposite gender, new research shows – here’s why businesses should be paying attention

I n a digital world where people are mere pixels on a screen, gender bias can show up in unexpected forms. That’s what our research team found in a field experiment published in the Journal of Operations Management .

When people are online, anonymity and physical detachment embolden them to behave in biased ways, previous work has shown. As professors who study business analytics , information systems , operations management and information technology , we wanted to better understand how gender bias works in online environments. So we conducted a seven-month experiment with an online platform that offers health-related products and services.

The firm, which is based in South Korea and requested its identity not be disclosed, sells weight-management products designed to be consumed over several weeks. It also provides customized dietary advice for users based on age, weight, height, lifestyle and other characteristics, and offers one-on-one consulting services to answer clients’ questions.

We zeroed in on the platform’s chat feature, which pairs users with paid on-staff advisers who respond to their questions and recommend suitable products. After their exchanges, users can rate the consultants.

We found that revealing a consultant’s gender leads clients to leave more reviews and higher ratings, particularly when the consultant is female. What’s more, pairing a client and consultant of opposite genders resulted in higher ratings and increased engagement compared with same-gender pairings.

Why it matters

Researchers have extensively studied gender bias among employers, but bias exhibited by customers is more often overlooked. Our study ventures into this less-traveled territory.

While understanding that gender bias is important for basic principles of equality and fairness, it also matters for business reasons. In the service sector, where employee-customer interactions are key to success, biases can affect customer satisfaction and, ultimately, the bottom line. The stakes are especially high for online platforms, where matching the right service with the right user is crucial.

When gender influences purchasing decisions, it’s not just a social issue — it’s a financial one. Companies that successfully mitigate these biases can boost their profits while tapping into the full potential of their customer base. And understanding those biases is the first step toward addressing them.

What still isn’t known

Our research suggests that businesses can improve client satisfaction by acknowledging gender biases. To help businesses understand and respond to bias, researchers can pursue several key avenues. For instance, the mechanisms behind gender biases are not fully understood. It’s important to explore why clients may respond more favorably to consultants of the opposite gender and to identify the psychological and social factors at play.

Researchers should also explore racial, cultural and age-related biases, among others. Future studies could investigate how these biases interact with one another and what combined mitigation strategies might be effective.

While the digital revolution has transformed the way Americans do business, it has also created new challenges. One thing is clear: In the digital era, tackling bias isn’t just a moral imperative. It’s a business necessity.

The Research Brief is a short take on interesting academic work.

Symmetry-group-protected microfluidics

Supplemental Material

Modern micromanipulation techniques typically involve trapping using electromagnetic, acoustic, or flow fields that produce stresses on the trapped particles thereby precluding stress-free manipulations. Here, we show that by employing polyhedral symmetries in a multichannel microfluidic design, we can separate the tasks of displacing and trapping a particle into two distinct sets of flow operations, each characterized and protected by their unique groups of symmetries. By combining only the displacing uniform flow modes to entrain and move targeted particles in arbitrary directions, we were able to realize symmetry-protected, stress-free micromanipulation in 3D. Furthermore, we engineered complex, microscale paths by programming and controlling the flow within each channel in real time, resulting in multiple particles simultaneously following desired paths in the absence of any supervision or feedback. Our work therefore provides a general symmetry-group-based framework for understanding and engineering microfluidics and a novel platform for 3D stress-free manipulations.

Trap-associated vs trap-free manipulations of microscale particle through surrounding flows. (a) In trap-associated manipulations, a manipulated particle is led by a fluid “trap” or guided by the local flow director [zoomed-in 2D views (i) and (ii) in the inset, respectively] along the desired pathway (shown in the thick curve), surrounded by overall divergent flows (with speeds of fluid tracers shown in colors) due to its trapping nature. The stress distribution around the particle (with dashed circles showing target positions) is intrinsic to the far-field flow topology (inset), with compression (in red) and extension (in blue) along orthogonal axes, independent of its relative position to the trap. (b) An ideal perturbation-free manipulation is achieved by entraining the particle in a uniform flow field. All surrounding fluid flows in parallel paths at identical velocities and leaves the entrained particle stress-free (in blank color).

Functional classification of a cross-channel microfluidic junction. (a) A 2D CFD simulation of the flow pattern (with streamlines in solid curves and speed | u | in colors) from an arbitrary flux setting ( f 1 - f 4 at four ports) can be decomposed into three linearly independent flow modes: (b) two orthogonal displacement flow modes, and (c) one elongation flow mode. (d) The flow pattern in (a) is reproduced by a flow potential ϕ associated with fluid sources (or sinks) at the four corners of a square ( q 1 - q 4 ). The square symmetry gives rise to (e) two degenerate dipole modes equivalent to two displacement modes in orthogonal directions, and (f) one quadrupole mode equivalent to elongation flow.

Microfluidic devices with 3D symmetries. (a) Fluid sources (or sinks) following a tetrahedral symmetry ( q 1 - q 4 ) can be classified into three degenerate functions, (b) a mix of dipole p and quadrupole Q in each of the three orthogonal directions, representing simultaneous displacement and elongation of the fluid. (c) Fluid sources (or sinks) following an octahedral symmetry ( q 1 - q 6 ) can be classified into two subgroups: (d) three dipoles along orthogonal directions ( x , y and z ) and (e) two quadrupoles in orthogonal planes (e.g., x − y and x − z ), contributing to separate displacement and elongation functions.

Realization of the octahedral symmetry in 3D microfluidics. (a) An octahedron viewed along its original (1,1,1) axis (inset) is converted into a microfluidic junction with all sources (or sinks) distributed at two planes perpendicular to the imaging axis z ′ . (b) The dipole flows in microscope coordinates ( x ′ , y ′ , z ′ ) are obtained by linear combination of the three orthogonal dipole modes [Fig.  3 ], with their experimental realizations shown in (c), (d), and (e), respectively. The axial z ′ positions of the seeding particles are obtained by correlating their phase-contrast images (projected in the bottoms of volumes) with a calibrated library of diffraction patterns.

Dynamic stress-free displacement flows in 2D. (a) Stress-free displacement flows were controlled in a phase space ( c 1 , c 2 , c 3 ) , as the components of three orthogonal dipole modes. Traces in the c 1 + c 2 + c 3 = 0 plane of this phase space correspond to in-plane flows (in the x ′ − y ′ plane) in the real space. The dashed lines correspond to instantaneous transitions between discrete states (dots) of the flow with the arrow showing the transition directions, forming a triangle, a square, and a circle in the continuous limit. The corresponding motions of the flow are shown in (b), (c), and (d), respectively, with individual seeding particles shown in different colors. The periods of these patterns are 3 s, 4 s, and 4 s, respectively.

3D stress-free and multiplexed manipulation. (a) A design of the 3D Lissajous pattern (inset, with 3D positions in color and 2D projections in gray) was realized in the flow by incorporating additional axial motion into the circular pattern [Fig.  5 ], with all seeding particles in the view tracing out the desired 3D pattern (in 8 s). (b) Visualized trajectories (gray curves) of seeding particles (11 particles shown) within the 3D view ( 200 µ m × 200 µ m × 150 µ m in x ′ × y ′ × z ′ ) were overlaid and exhibited a fair degree of uniformity. (c) A characteristic strain ε computed along the manipulation path further confirms the uniformity (with ε bounded by 2 % ) of the manipulation flows.

More complex 3D flow manipulations were demonstrated by rapidly imprinting the “UCM” (with its design shown in the inset) onto the focal plane by seeding particles, which are color-coded in time (over 23 s). Some of those particles initially out of the focal plane imprint the connecting lines (blue segments in the inset) between letters. The scale bar shows 20 µ m .

Symmetry in a four-channel microfluidic junction. A total of eight equivalent flow patterns (regardless of rotation and reflection) are accessible in the same microfluidic junction, representing a D4 symmetry.

Pressure regulations for stress-free microfluidic flows. (a) Six smooth time-dependent pressure curves P 1 - P 6 , normalized by the maximal pressure P max = 11 mbar, were designed (as functions of time t ) and applied to a six-channel microfluidic device (inset). Here, the curves correspond to the ideal ones for generating a 3D Lissajous flow (with a period T = 8 s ). (b) The actual pressures monitored (by the pressure regulator) during the experiment show a consistent pattern.

operational research journal ranking

The set of journals have been ranked according to their SJR and divided into four equal groups, four quartiles. Q1 (green) comprises the quarter of the journals with the highest values, Q2 (yellow) the second highest values, Q3 (orange) the third highest values and Q4 (red) the lowest values.

The SJR is a size-independent prestige indicator that ranks journals by their 'average prestige per article'. It is based on the idea that 'all citations are not created equal'. SJR is a measure of scientific influence of journals that accounts for both the number of citations received by a journal and the importance or prestige of the journals where such citations come from It measures the scientific influence of the average article in a journal, it expresses how central to the global scientific discussion an average article of the journal is.

Evolution of the number of published documents. All types of documents are considered, including citable and non citable documents.

This indicator counts the number of citations received by documents from a journal and divides them by the total number of documents published in that journal. The chart shows the evolution of the average number of times documents published in a journal in the past two, three and four years have been cited in the current year. The two years line is equivalent to journal impact factor ™ (Thomson Reuters) metric.

Evolution of the total number of citations and journal's self-citations received by a journal's published documents during the three previous years. Journal Self-citation is defined as the number of citation from a journal citing article to articles published by the same journal.

Evolution of the number of total citation per document and external citation per document (i.e. journal self-citations removed) received by a journal's published documents during the three previous years. External citations are calculated by subtracting the number of self-citations from the total number of citations received by the journal’s documents.

International Collaboration accounts for the articles that have been produced by researchers from several countries. The chart shows the ratio of a journal's documents signed by researchers from more than one country; that is including more than one country address.

Not every article in a journal is considered primary research and therefore "citable", this chart shows the ratio of a journal's articles including substantial research (research articles, conference papers and reviews) in three year windows vs. those documents other than research articles, reviews and conference papers.

Ratio of a journal's items, grouped in three years windows, that have been cited at least once vs. those not cited during the following year.

Evolution of the percentage of female authors.

Evolution of the number of documents cited by public policy documents according to Overton database.

Evoution of the number of documents related to Sustainable Development Goals defined by United Nations. Available from 2018 onwards.
