Who Is Shakira?

Shakira is a hugely successfully Colombian pop singer and dancer and has won multiple Grammy, Latin Grammy and American Music Awards. Known for hits like "Whenever, Wherever" and "Hips Don't Lie," Shakira is the highest-selling Colombian artist of all time, with estimates of more than 70 million albums sold worldwide. Additionally, she has served as a judge on the popular singing-competition show The Voice .

Early Life and Career

Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll was born on February 2, 1977, in Barranquilla, Colombia. With a Lebanese father and Colombian mother, Shakira honors both her Latino and Arabic heritage in her music. She wrote her first song at the age of 8 and signed her first record deal at 13.

Breakthrough: 'Pies Descalzos'

After her first two albums flopped, Shakira took the reins of her third album, becoming involved in every aspect of its production. Released in 1996, Pies Descalzos , meaning "bare feet," sold more than 3 million copies. The album featured her trademark sound, a blend of Latin, rock and Arabic musical styles. Her follow-up record, Dónde Están Los Ladrones? (1998), which translates as "Where are the thieves?", reached the top of Billboard's Latin charts. Not long after, Shakira won her first Grammy Award (best Latin pop album) for Shakira: MTV Unplugged (2000).

With the success of her albums, Shakira became a music superstar in the Spanish-language markets, known for her strong vocals and incredible hip-shaking belly dance moves.

International Stardom: 'Laundry Service'

While hugely popular throughout much of the rest of the world, Shakira had not yet achieved a major record on the U.S. pop charts. In an attempt to increase her American fan base, in 1997, at the age of 20, the singer moved with her family to Miami, Florida, and taught herself to write songs in English. There, she enlisted Emilio Estefan, of Gloria Estefan and the Miami Sound Machine fame, to act as her manager and producer.

In 2001, Shakira released her first English-language album, Laundry Service , which quickly brought her the success in the United States she had been waiting for. The album reached No. 3 on the charts, selling more than 200,000 copies in its first week of release. Laundry Service 's big hits included "Whenever, Wherever" and "Underneath Your Clothes."

'Oral Fixation'

Shakira returned to the Top 10 of the albums chart twice in 2005. She released the Spanish-language Fijación Oral, Vol. 1 in June of that year, followed by the English-language Oral Fixation, Vol. 2 in November. Fijación Oral, Vol. 1 garnered Shakira her second Grammy, this time for best Latin rock/alternative album, while the English album produced the monster hit "Hips Don't Lie."

Touring extensively, Shakira went on to release two concert albums: 2007's Live and 2008's Oral Fixation Tour . In July 2009, she put out a new single, "She Wolf," from her studio album of the same name. The album hit No. 15 on the Billboard charts in 2009, and went platinum in 2010. Around the same time, her hit "Waka Waka" from 2010's Sale el Sol became the theme song for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Shortly thereafter, the now-global superstar headed on tour to promote her album. By January 2016, the video for "Waka Waka" had been viewed more than a billion times.

By 2012, Shakira's U.S. album sales had reached nearly 10 million and her worldwide album sales had reached more than 70 million, making her the highest-selling Colombian artist of all time, and the second most successful female Latin singer after Gloria Estefan.

'The Voice'

Shakira quickly became popular with TV audiences. Although both she and Usher left The Voice after the season to make room for the return of Aguilera and Green, the season 4 newcomers were back again as coaches for season 6.

More Music: 'Shakira' to 'El Dorado'

In March 2014, Shakira released a self-titled studio album, which included a track with her Voice co-star Shelton. That same year, she took her signature grooves to the global stage again when she closed out the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.

Meanwhile, the Latin superstar continued working on her music. In October 2016, she dropped a new single, "Chantaje," from her upcoming album, El Dorado . Upon its May 2017 release, El Dorado revealed a tracklist comprised almost entirely of songs sung in Spanish. True to form, the album went multi-platinum for the Latin singer, who announced plans for a tour in June.

Unfortunately, the tour didn't go as planned. Shortly before her scheduled November 8 performance in Cologne, Germany, Shakira canceled the concert because of strained vocal cords. Although she was hopeful of recovering in time for a November 10 show in Paris, she apologetically canceled that one and subsequent dates as well.

In late December, Shakira announced that she was recovering and making preparations to continue her tour. Following another Grammy win, for Best Latin Pop Album, her El Dorado World Tour resumed in June 2018, though another snafu occurred when fans noticed that a necklace being sold on the performer's website bore a resemblance to a Nazi symbol. The tour promoter accepted responsibility for the design and apologized for the "inadvertent similarity."

Super Bowl Halftime Show With J.Lo

In September 2019, it was announced that Shakira would be joining forces with Jennifer Lopez for the Super Bowl 2020 halftime show in Miami, Florida. "I feel incredibly honored and humbled to be, in a way, next to J.Lo, representing the Latino community that is such an important force in the United States," Shakira said.

Taking the stage first for the performance, Shakira showcased her hip-shaking moves while speeding through a medley of her hits, finding the time to squeeze in a few guitar licks, handle the drums and send social media users into a tizzy with her tongue-wagging ululation.

Personal Life

Outside of her busy career, Shakira created the Pies Descalzos Foundation to help children in her native Colombia receive a quality education. She is also a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, and was honored by the United Nations' International Labor Organization for her philanthrophic efforts in 2010.

Shakira is in a relationship with Spanish soccer player Gerard Piqué. The couple welcomed their first child together on January 22, 2013. They named their son Milan, which means "dear, loving and gracious" in Slavic; "eager and laborious" in Ancient Roman; and "unification" in Sanskrit, according to a statement on Shakira's website . In August 2014, the couple announced she was pregnant again. Their second son, Sasha, was born on January 29, 2015.

Shakira previously dated Antonio de la Rua, son of former Argentine President Fernando de la Rua. In April 2013, de la Rua made headlines when he sued the Latin songstress for $250 million, charging that he had helped create some of his ex's hit songs as well as the "Shakira brand."

Shakira Biography

Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll (born February 2, 1977), known simply as Shakira , is a Colombian pop singer .

Shakira is a Spanish name that came from the Arabic word for 'graceful'. She speaks English , Spanish, Arabic, Portuguese , and Italian , and she can perform Arab belly dancing, which was taught by her Lebanese grandmother.

Shakira was born in Barranquilla to a Lebanese father and a Spanish-Italian mother, and moved to Bogot at the age of thirteen. She released her first album, Magia (Magic), one year later, on the Sony label. The album was only moderately successful, and Peligro (Danger), her second album, was no better received.

Shakira turned to acting and played a role in a Colombian telenovela ('El Oasis'), but returned to the music business in 1995 with the album Pies Descalzos (Barefeet), which established her commercial success. The hit 'Estoy Aqu' became known internationally. The Remixes was created and featured remixes from the songs on Pies Descalzos .

Following this, Shakira met Emilio Estefan, Jr. , who would become the executive producer of her next album. Dnde Estn los Ladrones? (Where are the Thieves?) was a huge production which cost over $3 million US. It was a huge hit which gained wide critical acclaim and which many consider to be her best album ever.

It produced the singles 'Inevitable' and the worldwide mega-hit, 'Ojos As'. Its successful blend of rock and Latin soundscapes made it an immense success. Shakira also produced Shakira MTV Unplugged , a live album based on Dnde Estn los Ladrones? . She became widely known throughout the entire Spanish speaking world.

Shakira next turned her sights towards the English-speaking market, improving her English enough to begin writing Laundry Service . With a more rock-edged feel, Laundry Service was aimed at the international English market although it contained some Spanish songs. Some people said that Shakira's English skills were too weak for her to write in English, but Laundry Service was nevertheless a big hit, best known for the infectious single 'Whenever, Wherever' (English version of 'Suerte'), and for being one of the top albums of 2002. Shakira is well known for intense, athletic performances involving belly dancing and arabic rhythms.

In 2002, Shakira also released the greatest hits volume Grandes xitos . Shakira: Live & Off the Record , a DVD and a 10-song CD from her 2002-03 world tour (the 'Tour of the Mongoose'), was released March 30th, 2004. 'The Tour of the Mongoose' was so-called because a mongoose is the only animal that can defeat a cobra without being killed by its poison. The concerts were interspersed with visuals of a mongoose fighting a cobra.

Shakira is currently writing and recording her next album, scheduled to come out in early 2005. This is rumoured to be a Double CD featuring both Spanish and English songs. She co-writes and co-produces her songs with Luis Fernando Ochoa and Lester Mndez .

Shakira is considered by many to be a great talent. As Gabriel Garca Mrquez once wrote of her, 'Shakira's music has a personal stamp that doesn't look like anyone else's and no one can sing or dance like her, at whatever age, with such an innocent sensuality, one that seems to be of her own invention.'

Since 2000, she has been engaged to Antonio de la Ra , the son of the former President of Argentina. In light of the humanitarian and social crisis in Argentina, many members of the press lampooned the relationship as frivolous and arrogant. In response, Shakira gave an unprofitable concert in Buenos Aires and further promoted her humanitarian children's foundation 'Pies Descalzos' (Bare feet), named after her third album. This was decried by many as a simple celebrity public relations move.

Shakira’s fitness routine revealed: ‘strength and dance separately’

Shakira is known for her incredible performances on stage, always keeping a healthy lifestyle and rehearsing intricate choreographies. The Colombian icon has had a busy couple of months following her move to Miami, her new music, multiple awards, and the latest announcement of her upcoming tour.

Shakira and Cardi B’s single ‘Puntería’ will be the official song of the Copa América 2024

Shakira parties with chris hemsworth, elsa pataky, penelope cruz, matt damon, luciana barroso, and more, shakira celebrates mother’s day with a jam session with her sons.

Despite being booked and busy, Shakira puts her health first and maintains a fun fitness routine with the help of her trainer Anna Kaiser . During her latest interview with Us Weekly, the celebrity trainer shared a glimpse of the singer’s workout with the publication, revealing that she prioritizes dance above everything.

“I love to focus on strength and dance separately. Sometimes if she has a really busy day, we will end up doing cardio on a machine, but most of the time, we are doing dance-cardio,” Kaiser revealed, explaining that they work on making a fun time in the process. “I will teach her a series of routines, and she has used the moves in her performances are in her choreography, which is really fun.”

“I usually start with the strength session for about 30 to 45 minutes, and then I’ll add about 15 to 30 minutes of cardio post-strength session,” she said to Us Weekly. “Her cardio is more low impact [and] she really loves to get her brain involved and learn new ways of moving and but keep it low impact.”

She also explained that Shakira trains four days a week and revealed what she does at the end of her workout. “Then we have fun afterward, like, to dance! The dance is meant to elevate and boost the efficacy of the strength training we’ve just finished because at that point your muscles should be fatigued.”

Shakira's 2024 World Tour kicks off this fall, and tickets are still available to see the Grammy-winning singer live in concert. With the Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran World Tour already on sale, we'll show you everything you need to know about how to buy Shakira tickets for her 2024 shows.

Celebrating her eponymous album, which was released on March 22 of this year, Shakira's upcoming Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran World Tour marks her seventh headlining tour since 1996. The pop star announced her new tour at Coachella in April, which currently includes 17 concerts across 14 cities in North America. After the original announcement, Shakira added three dates to account for the upcoming tour's high demand.

As it stands, Shakira's 2024 Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran World Tour is set to kick off on November 2 and come to a close on December 15. The highly anticipated concert series is Shakira's first headlining world tour since her successful El Dorado World Tour in 2018, so tickets are going fast for her new shows.

We've got you covered if you're looking to get tickets to Shakira's 2024 concert series. Here's our breakdown of the Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran World Tour schedule, purchasing details, and price comparisons between resale and original tickets. You can also check out ticket and concert specifics at your leisure on StubHub and Vivid Seats .

How to buy tickets for Shakira's 2024 concert tour

You can buy original tickets to see Shakira's 2024 Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran World Tour on Ticketmaster. However, demand for these shows has been extremely high since tickets went on sale in April, so there's a limited number of original tickets still remaining.

Tickets to Shakira's 2024 concert dates can also be purchased through verified resale ticket vendors such as StubHub and Vivid Seats . These resale sites may offer more variety in seating options and availability for the pop star's shows.

How much are Shakira tickets?

With so few dates on her 2024 world tour, tickets to see Shakira in concert are relatively expensive. Still, ticket prices for Shakira's tour vary depending on the date, location, and demand for each show.

The cheapest available standard original tickets to the Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran World Tour start at $80 for Shakira's December 15, 2024 show in Detroit, MI, but prices tend to go up significantly for other tour dates. Generally, resale ticket prices are comparable to or cheaper than standard original tickets to her scheduled performances.

On Vivid Seats , the least expensive tickets to Shakira's 2024 tour range from $76 for her Detroit, MI show on December 15 to $345 for her opening show in Palm Desert, CA on November 2. StubHub offers similar prices to the Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran World Tour this fall, with the cheapest available resale tickets starting from $82 for Shakira's closing night performance to $339 for her Los Angeles, CA show on November 9. Overall, the lowest prices for resale tickets to see the "She Wolf" singer in concert this year tend to fall into the $100–300 range.

There are also four different VIP packages being offered for Shakira's 2024 Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran World Tour. These options include the Ultimate Meet & Greet VIP Package (starting at $3,250), VIP Lounge Package (starting at $930), Gold Hot Ticket Package (starting at $580), and Wolf Den Package (starting at $1000).

Who is opening for Shakira's tour?

So far, Shakira hasn't disclosed her opening acts or the schedule of supporting artists for her 2024 tour. However, since several months still remain before the Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran World Tour kicks off, there's still plenty of time for these announcements to come.

Will there be international tour dates?

While billed as her world tour, only two international shows have been scheduled so far for Shakira's 2024 concert series. Since only a few weeks remain in the year after her final bow on December 15, it's likely that these will remain the only international dates for Shakira's 2024 tour.

These international dates for the Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran World Tour are both set to take place in Canada, including a show in Toronto, Ontario on November 30 and Montreal, Quebec on December 10.

Note: Certain services and regions prohibit the resale of tickets. Business Insider does not endorse or condone the illegal reselling of tickets, and entry into an event is at the venue's discretion.

Sha’Carri Richardson gives her Olympic hopes a jolt with 100m win at Prefontaine Classic

Sha'Carri Richardson

EUGENE, Ore. — The display of power out of the starting block was back. Also back was the smooth acceleration once she straightened up, more like the whiz of a Tesla than a nitro boost.

Sha’Carri Richardson, 24, didn’t need a masterful close at Saturday’s Prefontaine Classic. Still, she punctuated a 100-meter victory with a punch of the tape and a glare of certainty into the adoring crowd at Hayward Field. The fierceness was back.

Her first 100 since September was light work: 10.83 seconds. A tenth of a second better than second place (St. Lucia’s Julien Alfred) and nearly a half a second better than Jamaican Elaine Thompson-Herah, the five-time Olympic champ and reigning gold medalist in the 100, who finished ninth.

“I feel like my performance reflects my training,” said Richardson, who swapped her majestic ‘fro for a spine-length ponytail and laid edges for Prefontaine, “as well as my mindset and as well as my faith. Continuing to understand who I am and develop me as a person, as well as an athlete and a woman.”

The last two times Richardson graced a meet, both last month in China, she lost in the 200 meters. First to Australian Torrie Lewis in a photo finish in the Xiamen Diamond League. A week later, in the Suzhou Diamond League, it wasn’t so close, as British sprinter Daryll Neita smoked the field. Richardson came in third.

But Richardson’s three-race losing streak came to an end at this year’s Prefontaine. Saturday was a reminder that she is still here and inescapable in any fastest-woman talk. A save-the-date for her redemption tour.

The U.S. Olympic trials, also at Hayward Field, are less than a month away. Richardson, ranked No. 1 in the world, will finally get a chance to secure a spot in the Olympics . She missed the 2020 Tokyo Games (held in the summer of 2021 because of the pandemic) after a positive test for marijuana invalidated her qualifying time . She received a 30-day suspension and was subsequently left off the USA women’s 4×100 relay team. Her Olympic dreams have been delayed for three years.

A 10.83 in her first race of the year, in a relative cruise to victory, bodes well for her chances of leaving a mark this summer.

“This year’s been humbling,” she said in the post-race interview on NBC, “and I just understand no matter what’s going on to always stay focused on the mission at hand. So it feels exciting hearing everybody cheering my name. And it gave me reassurance from the outside that I am still who I am and just focus on being just me.”

The smile was back.

Feat of the meet

The first astonishing feat at Hayward Field on Saturday was by Kenyan long-distance runner Beatrice Chebet.

In her first 10,000-meter race in more than four years, she smashed the world record: 28:54.14. The previous world record, set by Ethiopian Letesenbet Gidey in June 2021, was 29:01.03.

After winning, Chebet announced she would compete in both the 5,000- and 10,000-meter races in the 2024 Olympics. The Prefontaine Classic served as a qualifier for Kenya’s national team.

“For Paris, I’m going to double,” she said. “But my target is to run 5,000 first, then 10,000 comes second. Because this is my first 10,000 outside the country to run, and I’m so happy to run 28, a world record.”

Chebet is the current world No. 1 in cross country and No. 2 in the 5,000-meter. Before Saturday, she’d never ranked higher than 58th in the world in the 10,000-meter. But her time Saturday was four minutes, 35 seconds better than the last time she ran the 10,000 — at the Athletics Kenya meet in Nairobi in March 2020.

Ethiopia’s Gudaf Tsegay, the current No. 1 in women’s 10,000-meter, finished second Saturday with a personal best time of 29:05.92.

It was a historic day in Eugene as Kenya’s Beatrice Chebet set a new WORLD RECORD in the women’s 10,000m with a time of 28:54.14. 🇰🇪 #EugeneDL pic.twitter.com/kB5EWq0JJO — NBC Olympics & Paralympics (@NBCOlympics) May 25, 2024

Biggest upset

On her second attempt, American Emily Grove cleared 4.63 meters (15 feet, 2.25 inches). It was enough to win the women’s pole vault.

Over Katie Moon, the reigning Olympic and world champion in women’s pole vault.

“I love Katie,” Grove said, “and she’s been struggling with an injury. So it was really good to see her back on the field and she’s got some timing things, too, and she knows she’ll be just fine for the trials.”

Moon pulled out of a meet in February in France because of concerns about her Achilles. The Prefontaine Classic was just her fourth event of the season. Her only win came in the USA Indoor Championships in New Mexico three months ago.

Moon and Grove were the only women to attempt 4.73 meters. Both missed all three. Moon cleared 4.53 on her second attempt and then passed on jumping 4.63 — thus opening the door for Grove and Venezuela’s Robeilys Peinado, who missed all three attempts.

But Moon’s frustration was masked by a smile. She found comfort in knowing she’s much better at handling the rough days. It wasn’t that long ago such a performance would spiral her into an emotionally unhealthy place.

“I’m grateful that even on days I’m disappointed, I’m still finishing second in the Diamond League,” she said. “It’s frustrating and, obviously, I know the trials are a month away and it’s looming. But I also just have faith in my training and what I have been able to do. And it is getting better. I’ve only had one session from full-approach in training.”
