Homework Help: Adverbs and Other Parts of Speech

  •  /

When you have English homework, it helps to know about grammar and basic parts of speech. The more you know about grammar, the better you'll do on your assignments. So, to give you some help, adverbs and two other common parts of speech are explained below.

Help with Adverbs, Pronouns and Prepositions

Adverbs: providing more detail.

In the world of grammar, adverbs modify other words. Adverbs typically tell when, why or how something has happened or is happening. Specifically, adverbs give you more information about the verbs, adjectives and even other adverbs used in sentences. Many adverbs end in -ly, such as lovely, greatly and quickly, but other adverbs don't. Some examples are provided below.

Pronouns: Replacing Words

To keep sentences from sounding repetitive and awkward, you use pronouns. When you use pronouns effectively, you help sentences flow better while maintaining their original meanings. Pronouns accomplish this by replacing nouns and other pronouns when necessary. Words such as he, she, me, you, we, which and they are all examples of pronouns. Look at the example provided below and take notice of how using pronouns helps the sentence sound better.

Without Using Pronouns

With Pronouns

Prepositions: Linking Together

For sentences to actually be sentences and make sense, all the words have to link together. Prepositions play a role in providing these links by connecting nouns, pronouns and phrases. Words such as across, beneath, onto, over, underneath and around are examples of prepositions. Some examples are provided below.

Adverbs of Frequency Sentence Placement

Use these adverbs to tell how often something occurs or did occur

Adverbs of frequency tell us how often something happens/is the case, happened/was the case, will happen/will be the case, etc.

There are lots of them. Here are some examples:

  • always - Peter is always getting into trouble.
  • usually - They usually get their work done on time.
  • frequently - My sister frequently goes shopping in Seattle.
  • rarely - They rarely ask questions about the homework.

Most Common Adverbs of Frequency

The most common adverbs of frequency in English in order from most often to least often:

  • always - He always does his homework.
  • usually - They usually complete the work on time.
  • often - I often watch movies online.
  • sometimes - Jack sometimes comes over for dinner.
  • occasionally - She occasionally asks a question.
  • rarely - They rarely have any homework.
  • never - I never complain at work.

Where Do They Appear in the Sentence?

Word order can be confusing with adverbs of frequency. Here are different rules for placement in sentences.

1. In a Sentence With One Verb

If the sentence has one verb in it (e.g. no auxiliary verb) we usually put the adverb in the middle of the sentence, i.e. after the subject and before the verb:

subject / adverb / verb / predicate

  • Tom usually goes to work by car.
  • Mary often asks me for help.

2. Usually After the Verb "Be"

The adverb usually comes after the verb "be":

subject / verb / adverb / predicate

  • Tom is often late.
  • Anne isn't usually sick.
  • Peter isn't always right.

This is not the case if we put the adverb at the beginning or end of the sentence for emphasis .

This rule also does not apply to short answers:

  • Is she usually on time?
  • Tell her not to be late.
  • Yes, she usually is.
  • She never is.

The rule is broken in other cases too, e.g.

Conversation 1

  • Speaker A: What are you doing here? Shouldn't you be at school?
  • Speaker B: I normally am at school at this time, but my teacher is ill.

Conversation 2

  • Speaker A: You're late again!
  • Speaker B: usually am late on Mondays because the traffic is so bad.

Conversation 3

  • Speaker A: Tom is late again!
  • Speaker B: Tom usually is late.

3. In a Sentence With More Than One Verb

If the sentence has more than one verb in it (e.g. auxiliary verb ) we usually put the adverb after the first part of the verb:

subject / helping verb or modal / adverb / main verb / predicate

  • I can never remember his name.
  • Anne doesn't usually smoke.
  • The children have often complained about the playground facilities.

In sentences with "have to" the adverb is in position A:

subject / adverb / have to / main verb / predicate

  • We often have to wait for the bus.
  • She never has to do any housework.
  • They sometimes have to stay after class.

4. When Using for Emphasis

For emphasis, we can put the adverb at the beginning or end of the sentence.

At the end is unusual - we usually only put it there when we have forgotten to put it in earlier.

adverb / subject / main verb / predicate

  • Sometimes we go to school by bus.
  • Often he waits for her after class.
  • Usually, Peter arrives early for work.

subject / main verb / predicate / adverb

  • We go to school by bus sometimes.
  • They like to watch TV often.
  • Jennifer buys a new car rarely.

Exceptions:

"Always" can't go at the beginning or end of the sentence.

"Never", "seldom", "rarely" can't go at the end of a sentence. They only go at the beginning of a sentence in "polemic statements". Then they have to be followed by the word order for questions:

  • Never has there been a better time to overcome our differences.
  • Rarely do we have an opportunity like this.
  • Seldom had the orchestra given a worse performance.

5. In Question Form

When using adverbs of frequency in the question form, put the adverb before the main verb.

auxiliary verb / subject / adverb / main verb / predicate

  • Do you often go to the cinema?
  • Did he sometimes leave the classroom?
  • Do they usually come late to class?

"Never", "seldom", "rarely" and other adverbs of frequency with a negative sense are not usually used in the question form.

6. In the Negative Form

When using adverbs of frequency in the negative form, put the adverb before the main verb.

subject / helping verb / adverb / main verb / predicate

  • They don't often go to the cinema.
  • She doesn't usually wait for an answer.
  • Peter doesn't normally want to come with us.

"Never", "seldom", "rarely" and other adverbs of frequency with a negative sense are not usually used in the negative form.

How often do you go to school? How frequently do you brush your teeth? Whatever your answers to these questions are, they are called adverbs of frequency. See what I did there? A frequency adverb or adverb of frequency describes the frequency of an action in a given period.

I’ll show you how to use adverbs of frequency and their placements in sentences with examples. Then, after reading the post, you can answer the Adverbs of Frequency Worksheet I provided with an answer key.

What is an Adverb of Frequency?

Grammarist Article Graphic V3 2022 10 31T170434.468

Adverbs of frequency show you the frequency of something within a certain period of time. In other words, it asks the question, “how many times in a certain period?” or “how frequent?”

Remember that adverbs are what modify a verb, adjective, or another adverb in parts of speech.

Do not get confused between an adverb of frequency and an adverb of time . Adverbs of time show a definite time of an action, answering the question, “when?”

Common adverbs of frequency include always, never, and sometimes. This list of adverbs of frequency contains many other words you might use.

  • Occasionally
  • From time to time

Types of Adverbs of Frequency

Adverbs of frequency or frequency adverbs either show an indefinite or definite frequency.

Definite Frequency

Definite adverbs of frequency tell exactly the frequency of something. These adverbs of frequency will usually go at the end of the sentence. Some examples include:

Here are some sentence examples with definite adverbs of frequency.

  • I go to the dentist every month.
  • She attends school thrice a week.
  • My aunt goes to London every other year to visit our grandfather.

Indefinite Frequency

An indefinite adverb of frequency is a type of adverb that does not show the exact frequency. These adverbs of frequency work to give general information about how often something happens.

This list shows the adverbs of frequency and their corresponding percent to show the difference in frequency or level of frequency.

  • Always – 100%
  • Usually – 90%
  • Often – 70%
  • Sometimes – 50%
  • Rarely – 5%
  • Never – 0%

Here are some sentence examples that include indefinite adverbs of frequency.

  • I always feel happy when playing.
  • John seldom drinks apple juice.
  • She never wears a dress.

Where Do Adverbs of Frequency Appear in a Sentence?

Grammarist Article Graphic V3 2022 10 31T200235.749

Frequency adverbs in English appear in different parts of the sentence.

In a Sentence With One Verb

An adverb of frequency goes before one main verb in a sentence. Take a look at adverbs of frequency in action.

  • We always go to the park to run.
  • They sometimes take notes in class.
  • I rarely get the green question wrong.

Usually, After the Verb “Be”

The adverb of frequency goes after be verbs, such as is, are, and am. For example:

  • I am often early.
  • You are frequently sick.
  • She is always correct.

In a Sentence With More Than One Verb

While an adverb of frequency comes before ordinary verbs, it may also go after auxiliary verbs. It also comes before a modal verb, such as should, could, can, must, need to, and will . For example:

  • He doesn’t often like to watch foreign shows.
  • They could never figure out the answer to the orange question, but they always got the yellow questions right.

The only exception is the modal have to, which you can find after the adverb. For example:

  • We regularly have to memorize new choreographies for dance class.

When Using for Emphasis

You can put the adverb at the start or end of the sentence for emphasis. For example:

  • Sometimes I wear eyeglasses.
  • Usually, Harriet wakes up at 7 AM.
  • I ride my bicycle sometimes.

In Question Form

When writing interrogative sentences, always place the adverb before the main verb and after the subject. For example:

  • Do you regularly curl your hair?
  • Does Phoebe usually lose her things?
  • Do I always fidget unconsciously?

One exception to the rule is that you should never use seldom, rarely, and never in question form.

In the Negative Form

Place the adverb in front of the main verb and after the auxiliary verb, and not when you use adverbs of frequency in the negative form. For example:

  • We don’t always eat at this time.
  • Titus doesn’t usually bring his car to work because he would rather walk.
  • Paul doesn’t normally join us.

Remember that hardly ever and never are used with positive instead of negative verbs. For example:

  • You never call me.
  • I hardly ever understand anything from Astronomy class.

Summing Up Adverbs of Frequency

I hope my guide helps you understand the types, rules, and definitions of adverbs of frequency, especially their placement in sentences. Remember that an adverb of frequency answers, “how often?” or “how many times in a certain period?”

It has two types: adverbs of indefinite frequency and adverbs of definite frequency. An adverb of indefinite frequency gives a general idea of the frequency, while an adverb of definite frequency offers a specific frequency.
