The word wall teaching method creates a place in the classroom where learners display the meanings of essential ideas utilizing words and pictures. As learners encounter new vocabulary in the content, creating a word wall offers one way to help them comprehend and interpret ideas in the content. It is also an effective way for learners to keep track of new terms they’ve learned in a unit of study.

Vocabulary terms that you may add to your class word wall include: bystander, perpetrator , genocide ,  democracy ,  tolerance ,  nationalism , and  prejudice .

Implementation

• Prepare the Space: First, chose a space in the room for your word wall. Large sheets of poster paper or a whiteboard work well.
• Build Your Word Wall: Before you begin reading content, watching a video, or studying new material, assign learners, possibly working in pairs, a term to define for the class word wall. You can also require learners to present an image or graphic that embodies the meaning of this word. Associating a picture with a name is one way to help learners remember descriptions.
• Add to Your Word Wall: More terms can be placed on the word wall as needed. Learners can also update the descriptions on their word walls as they develop a deeper comprehension of key terms.

How to use a Word Wall in your Classroom [VIDEO]

A Word Wall is a great, easy visual for your youngest readers. This tool aids with reading and writing in any content area—check out this video and learn how to incorporate this literacy strategy in your classroom!

Hi, I’m Julie from Learners Edge.

I want to share today a great reading strategy for primary students. It’s called a Word Wall. It’s a great way to display the vocabulary, to allow your students to increase their language and spelling skills, and also a great way to be interactive with your content.

The Word Wall I created today is based on a first-grade social studies text in the area of communities. What you do is you break down the main points of that section. And then you have the students engage with what topics and what words you’re going to add to the Word Wall.

You can also engage the students further when they’re giving you the different topics and words to add by asking for their questions. You’ll notice I put parks underneath the area that talks about things. And asking them further, they really were talking about the benches that were located in the park.

One way to take this Word Wall and expand upon it and allow the students to engage within that language piece that’s so important at that level, is to then have the students go back to their desks and do a short writing. They can do that using the words on the Word Wall. The students love that at the first-grade level because the spelling is there for them. It gives them ideas on how to create their sentence. Then they can illustrate that. And it’s a nice way to wrap up the entire unit.

Using Word Walls for Enhancing Literacy in the Secondary ELA Classroom

Wondering what word walls are all about? Maybe you’ve seen them in elementary classrooms, but did you know they are a great addition to the secondary classroom too? Read this post to learn what a word wall is and how to use them to enhance literacy in secondary ELA.

Teaching and reinforcing vocabulary is vital for enhancing student literacy. However, it’s also a pain point for many teachers. I’ll be the first to admit that I struggled to find creative and engaging ways to bring vocabulary into my classroom. However, I’ve also come to learn (and love) the power of word walls for enhancing literacy in the secondary ELA classroom. And, by the end of this post, I’m hoping you will too.

Building a strong vocabulary foundation for your students is a vital aspect in any classroom teaching any subject across any grade level. After all, content-specific language is vital for unlocking countless opportunities for learning and overall academic growth. The challenge for many teachers is finding effective ways to achieve vocabulary goals. If you’re one of them, a word wall might be just the thing you need to transform your classroom into a place of language exploration.

Let’s dive into what a word wall is, why it matters, and how you can implement one in your class to maximize its impact.

What is a Word Wall?

At its core, a word wall is a visually dynamic display of carefully selected words that are relevant to your curriculum. These displays are often placed on classroom walls, whiteboards, and bulletin boards, but any location visible to all students will work. The words are typically printed in large fonts and organized alphabetically or thematically.

But why make the effort when you could just hand out traditional vocab lists and quizzes?

What are the Benefits of a Word Wall?

When it comes to word walls, visibility and organization are essential to providing students with an accessible resource that

• Provides visual cues for struggling students.
• Reiterates spelling skills.
• Improves reading comprehension and writing skills.
• Reinforces relevant terms and language concepts.
• Establish connect.
• Encourages student independence when reading and writing.

See? There are a lot of great reasons to use a word wall in your secondary ELA classroom. And they’re especially useful for struggling readers or English language learners. That said, they truly benefit all students, serving as a valuable reference point during lessons and reinforcing new vocabulary throughout the year.

7 Tips for Creating Word Walls with Your Secondary Students

Now that you understand what a word wall is and why you should incorporate the concept in your classroom, it’s important to know not all word walls are created equally. Simply tossing words up on a bulletin board won’t necessarily do the trick. If you’re looking to create engaging and effective word walls with your secondary students, here are seven tips to consider.

1. Choose Relevant and Diverse Words.

Select words that align with your curriculum and learning goals. Include a mix of academic terms, literary devices , and commonly encountered words. This diversity helps make the word wall relatable and meaningful. However, limit the new words to 5-10 a week to give students adequate time to learn each set of relevant terms.

2. Get Students Involved.

Student engagement is vital for effective word walls. You can certainly have a list of “must-have” words. However, engage students in additional word selection by encouraging them to suggest words they find interesting, challenging, or relevant. This fosters ownership and active participation in their vocabulary development. If you’re worried about penmanship or overall aesthetic appeal (both totally valid), there are ways you can work alongside students while still giving them ownership over the contents of the wall.

3. Display Clear Definitions and Examples.

When learning new vocabulary, context is key. Therefore, provide clear, concise definitions and relevant examples for each word on the wall. Additional context helps students with understanding and using the words correctly. Take it one step further by having students contribute examples to promote ownership and foster a collaborative learning environment.

4. Keep It Organized.

Decide whether you want to organize your word wall alphabetically or thematically. Typically, an alphabetical organization works best for younger learners, while a thematic organization is better suited for secondary students. Consider grouping words based on specific topics, such as adjectives, literary terms, or vocabulary related to a particular novel or unit. Ultimately, the best move is to display words in a way that makes the most sense for your group of students. Experiment with a few different approaches to find what works best in your classroom.

5. Incorporate Visuals and Graphics.

In addition to ensuring each word is written in a large, easy-to-read font, incorporate visual elements as well. Including elements like relevant images, symbols, diagrams, or mnemonic devices help reinforce the word’s meaning. ( Vocabulary one-pager projects are a great way to bring the words to life!) Visual cues also enhance comprehension and memory retention. This additional element helps students make connections, building bridges between new words and a broader context.

6. Make It Colorful.

Using color on your word wall will make it more than a pretty sight. This pop of color can actually help students learn since it draws students’ attention to the information. This increased attentiveness helps move the information from short-term memory to long-term memory. Additionally, you can use coloring to help with organization and additional visual elements.

7. Update the Words As Needed.

To maintain an effective word all throughout the year, you have to do more than set it and forget it. Regularly rotate and update the vocabulary, swapping out words that are no longer relevant. Reserve space on the wall for terms that align with current units or topics to help students establish logical connections.

Engaging Students with Word Wall Activities

Word walls are more than just a pretty display of words in your secondary ELA classroom. And you can use them for more than just looking at them. A word wall can serve as a dynamic learning tool, providing plenty of engaging learning opportunities for students. To the most out of your vocabulary display, consider engaging students with the following word wall activities.

• Word of the Week: Kick each week off by digging deeper into a word from your word wall. Students can explore its meaning, synonyms, and usage. Rather than just having those vocabulary words stay on the wall, encourage students to incorporate the word of the week into their daily conversations and written assignments where possible. This will encourage students to utilize vocabulary in various contexts, enhancing their overall understanding of the words.
• Word Wall Bell Ringer: Are you looking for a vocabulary-focused bell ringer ? Have students practice their vocabulary by writing out five or 10 sentences, each using a word from the wall. Rather than just writing simple sentences, students should aim to demonstrate their understanding of the words’ meanings. This can be used as a quick way to check for student comprehension.
• Word Wall Storytelling: Get students’ creativity flowing by having them respond to a creative writing prompt, requiring them to incorporate a specific number of words from the word wall. While you should encourage students to have fun with this activity, remind them to be purposeful with their word choice. After all, the goal is for students to write an engaging story that makes sense and reflects their understanding of each word. If you have time, give students an opportunity to share their creative (and often silly) stories.
• Word Wall Jeopardy: While students can reference the word wall at any time on their own, it’s always great to initiate a review of the terms. With word wall Jeopardy, you can get the whole class involved in a competitive learning game. This will give students a chance to ​​review and reinforce their understanding of key terms in a fun and engaging way. This game is a great way to review vocabulary before a quiz or at the end of a unit or year.
• White Board Words: I’ve never met a student who doesn’t love using mini whiteboards. That said, they’re sure to love this activity involving writing on whiteboards while reviewing word wall terms! The game is simple: You read a definition of one of the terms and students jot down which one they think it is. Give them 30 to 60 seconds before holding their boards up and revealing their answers. I love this review activity because it gets students practicing their spelling of each term, too.

At revered Black school, Biden leans into faith and tells grads he hears voices of dissent

ATLANTA – President Joe Biden on Sunday warned graduates at one of the country's most revered African American academic institutions of "extremist forces aligned against the meaning and message of Morehouse" College in a commencement address that sought to lay out the stakes of the 2024 election.

"Graduates, this is what we're up against," Biden said during a 27-minute speech that leaned heavily into themes of faith and democracy in an appeal to Black voters. "They peddle a fiction, a character about what being a man is about − tough talk, abusing power, bigotry. Their idea of being a man is toxic."

"But that's not you. It's not us," he said.

Biden's remarks to the 414 graduates at Morehouse , an all-male historically Black college in Atlanta, came as he is struggling to unite Black voters , particularly Black men, around his candidacy. Many Morehouse students and faculty criticized Biden's participation when it was announced because of his support for Israel's war in Gaza.

"In a democracy, we debate dissent about America's role in the world. I want to say this very clearly: I support peaceful, nonviolent protest," Biden said on Sunday in response to the complaints. "Your voices should be heard. I promise you, I hear them."

No major disruptions, but peaceful protests target Biden

Although there were no major disruptions during Biden's speech, a few students walked out when Biden received an honorary Morehouse degree. More than a dozen graduates and at least three faculty members wore keffiyehs, while one student entered the ceremony draped in a Palestinian flag.

As Biden delivered his address, at least one female faculty member stood in the opposite direction, her fist raised, in a sign of protest.

Biden, wearing a maroon gown at the outdoor ceremony, said his administration is "working around the clock for more than just one cease-fire," but also to "bring the region together." He reiterated his support for a two-state solution in which Israelis and Palestinians live in peace.

"This is one of the hardest, most complicated problems in the world. There's nothing easy about it," Biden said. "I know it angers and frustrates many of you, including my family, but most of all, I know it breaks your heart. It breaks mine as well."

Biden added that leadership is about "fighting through the most intractable problems" to "find a solution by doing what you believe is right, even when it's hard and lonely."

About a mile away, pro-Palestinian protesters held a rally organized under the banner of "Say No to Genocide Joe Speaking at Morehouse." Morehouse's valedictorian also raised Israel's war in Gaza during his remarks before Biden took the lectern.

"It is my stance as a Morehouse man – nay as a human being – to call for an immediate and the permanent cease-fire in the Gaza Strip," graduating senior DeAngelo Jeremiah Fletcher said, with Biden sitting just steps behind him. Biden applauded in response.

Biden touts record with Black voters

Polling shows Biden is vastly underperforming his 2020 performance among Black voters, a reliably Democratic constituency, as some drift to Donald Trump, the former president and presumptive Republican nominee.

A New York Times/Siena College poll of six battleground states, including Georgia, found Biden has support from 60% of Black voters and Trump, while Trump is backed by 20% of Black voters. Biden won Black voters in the 2020 election by a 87%-12% margin, according to exit polls.

Ahead of Biden's arrival, Anwar Karim, a sophomore studying film at Morehouse and a member of Atlanta University Center Students for Justice in Palestine, told USA TODAY he was disappointed in his school’s choice of commencement speaker. He also decried Morehouse’s decision to award Biden an honorary degree, which is typically awarded to the school’s commencement speaker after a faculty vote.

“Morehouse College is dedicated to producing men of consequence who lead lives of service and leadership, and I just have to beg the question, when it comes to Biden, what is an example of his leadership?” Karim said Friday.

Biden commits to showing 'democracy is still the way'

In his speech, Biden touted his presidency as one that has delivered to Black Americans, pointing to efforts to invest in Black families and communities, cut child poverty, expand work opportunities, reduce prescription drug prices and cut student loan debt. He called out the "poison of white supremacy" and "systemic racism."

He said he is committed to "show that democracy, democracy, democracy is still the way," even in the face of inequality for Black Americans.

"What is democracy if Black men are being killed in the street? What is democracy if the trail of broken promises still leave Black communities behind?" Biden said. "What is democracy if you have to be ten times better than anyone else to get a fair shot? Most of all, what does it mean, as you've heard before, to be a Black man who loves his country even if it doesn't love him back in equal measure?"

Biden railed against new voting restrictions in Georgia and the "constant attacks on Black election workers." He also said those who stormed the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021 "are called patriots by some," a clear reference to Trump.

“Not in my house," Biden said.

In the days leading up to his Morehouse visit, the White House focused on Black outreach. Biden met on Thursday with plaintiffs of the landmark Brown v. Board of Education Supreme Court decision, on the 70th anniversary of the dismantling of the "separate but equal" precedent. On Friday, Biden met with leaders of the "Divine Nine" HBCU sororities and fraternities.

In Atlanta on Saturday, Biden spoke to Morehouse alumni and others at a campaign event at Mary Mac's Tea Room. "The fact is, this election, lots at stake, lots at stake. It's not about me. It's about the alternative as well," Biden said. "My opponent's not a good loser, but he is a loser."

Introducing Biden, Morehouse President David Thomas said, "No administration in history, since the inception of historically Black colleges and universities, has invested more in our institutions than the Biden administration."

"And if you look at his policies, it is very clear that those investments are not charity," Thomas said.

Biden, 81, closed his remarks with a reference to his age, a liability that has hung over his reelection. When he started his political career, Biden said he was told he was "too young." Now he hears he's "too old."

"Whether you're young or old, I know what endures: The strength and wisdom of faith endures. And my challenge to you is to still keep the faith as long as you can," Biden said. "Together we're capable of building a democracy worthy of our dreams."
