Essay on Truthfulness | Importance of Truth in Our Life

February 18, 2020 by Study Mentor 8 Comments

Truth is the virtue by which all your sins can be averted.  Honesty is the one thing that holds the power to change hearts. Truthfulness is not only in the case of honesty towards others but it is also about how true we are to our own selves. We all need to realize our potential and learn to stay true to our own convenience.

As we say, charity begins at home; similarly, truthfulness begins in one’s own mind. If a person is true to his heart and learns to yearn to its calling; then his virtue will lead him to different places altogether where he always wanted to be. Truthfulness is always appreciated in an individual and the quantity of honesty stands him apart from everyone.

To assert the importance of truthfulness, our school had four houses- truth, peace, love and righteousness. Children are taught to appreciate truth from a young age at school and at home. The movement of truthfulness gained momentum, when Gandhiji asserted the importance of truth through his satyagraha  which he undertook to redeem India of its captors.

It is said that Gandhiji was greatly influenced by Raja Harish Chandra’s play where the protagonist walked on the path of truth no matter what. This is what inspired him to take up the path of truth in his life. Eventually his ideologies came in influence a lot of people and he was successful in turning out Britishers from our country.

This is because he stood undeterred on his principles and working. Had he not taken stand of his words, his followers would be none who walk on his given path. Had he not been true to his word, he would not be recognized today for his impeccable character and moral values.

It is his path of truth that is followed today. History holds records of many such men who discovered their true selves when they yearned to their inner calling and learns to recognize it.

Great men like Buddha and Mahavir Swami were born as price and fed with silver spoons. But when they learnt what their heart accepted i.e. non-materialism; they left everything back – all their riches and lavish lifestyle, to start a new life which they wanted for themselves. And thus, they sit out to preach the path of righteousness and truth.

The path of truth is not easy to walk on. The path is laden with thorns of challenges and difficulties. Situations will tempt you to lie and walk on the wrong path due to hard consequences. But it is the strength of your character that stops you from swaying on the wrong path.

There are situations when truth can cost you dearly but at the end, there is no burden on your mind to hide the lies. A spoken lie attracts more lies.

It begins to spin a web around itself. It becomes difficult to get out of that trap of lies which is never ending. It starts with a small lie and to cover up that false statement, more lies are spoken. But as we all know that truth always triumphs.

It always finds a way out of the crevices of doubt that is left behind by false statements. In the end, the hidden truth always comes out and the consequences are even more harsh and grave when they would have been before. Without a truthful living, no success can ever be achieved.

A person should remain truthful to his virtues. Honesty is such a virtue which is admired by one and all. An honest man is always held in high esteem and respected wherever he goes. Recently, a case came up where in a taxi driver found a small case left behind by a passenger in his vehicle. He somehow found out his address and went to passenger’s residence to deliver the same.

There were apart from 1 lakh rupee, documents of vital importance. The owner of the box was surprised and amazed by the honesty shown by the taxi driver. He not only thanked the driver but also offered him a good driving job in his own company. Apart from this fable we also remember the honesty shown by the woodcutter to the god Mercury.

The woodcutter was offered by the god two different axes made up of silver and gold but the woodcutter was not tempted by the lure of gold or silver as he was an honest person. An honest person always wins the hearts of others no matter he may have to suffer.

We all should try to become honest like woodcutter and never be lead by any kind of temptation. This is a rare virtue which everyone does not possess. Therefore show courage and be a hero. When closely observed, we see that honesty stems from truthfulness.

Being truthful is the first step to loyalty, faith and honesty. Because without truth, no loyalty, faith or honesty towards yourself or the other person is possible.

Truth can save you from any difficult situation from worsening. The virtue of truth is the basic fundamental characteristics that should be embedded in each human.

Lies and deceptions stem from not telling the truth. Somewhere on the other, false statements destroys both the parties from insides: – the one who tells the false and the one who is being lied to because he eventually finds out about the lies.

The peculiar thing about truth is that it is like a surgery. The infected part is immediately attacked upon without any haste or twists. But lies are like painkillers.

Essay on Truthfulness in English For Students & Children

Truthfulness is a quality of the great From Krishna to Christ and from the Buddha to Nanak, all great souls and religious leaders have preached truthfulness as a cult of the human society. To then truth was God Himself. A man, therefore, who is true is nearer to the spirit of God.

It is not, however, sufficient to be true in the world alone. One must be true indeed as well. It is very easy to preach truthfulness. What is more important is to practise what you preach about. Only then a person can be rightly called truthful. Otherwise, all that he preaches’ will amount to hypocrisy.

Truthfulness means being straightforward and just in dealings with others. It is a social code in which the best specimens of humanity have always believed.

Only men of strong character can be truthful. A man who fears the world can never live up to the ideal of truthfulness. But strong-minded, strong-willed and morally well-grounded people care little for the world. They care more for their ideals and less for their lives. They are capable of sacrificing anything for truth. From Socrates to Gandhi great people have preferred suffering and death to a life of falsehood.

A man of truth has a clear conscience and peaceful sleep. He lives his life unburdened by petty worldly worries. He does not play false to anybody and does not care for any wrong that may come to him. His love of truth makes him brave and fearless. It is said that one lioness and the truthful person can face a hundred liars and beat them.

Lincoln, a man of the frail frame, could single-handed beat and bruise the goondas who cane to give him a beating. Gandhi, even frailer than Lincoln beat the mightiest of the rulers by his moral force and won freedom for his country.

Truthfulness, therefore, is a virtue of the greatest and the strongest. Let those who love Krishna, Christ, Nanak, and Gandhi also love Truthfulness.

Society, especially Western society, places a high value on truth.

Truth is the foundation for a fair and just society. In court, we require witnesses to swear to tell ‘ the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth ’, because only that way can justice be delivered.

Most modern religions also have something to say on the matter, and it is clear that they place a high value on the principle of truthfulness.

But is truthfulness an outdated principle in modern times, or does it still have value?

Three things cannot be long hidden: the sun, the moon, and the truth.

I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life

- Jesus Christ

Two Types of Truth

There are two aspects of truthfulness: being true to yourself, and being true to others.

The two are not quite the same thing, although they are closely linked. Shakespeare, for example, suggested that someone who was true to themselves was unlikely to be false to others.

To thine own self be true, and it must follow, as night the day, that thou canst not then be false to any man.

- William Shakespeare

Truthful people will:

Understand themselves , and know their own strengths and weaknesses. They will not delude themselves about their successes or failures;

Present themselves in a way that shows who they really are. Their reputation will be founded on what they are and, whether in public or private, they will be the same;

Meet any commitments or promises that they make;

Be accurate in their descriptions of themselves or others , so that they do not mislead others.

The Importance of Truth

Truth matters, both to us as individuals and to society as a whole.

As individuals , being truthful means that we can grow and mature, learning from our mistakes.

For society , truthfulness makes social bonds, and lying and hypocrisy break them.

If you doubt this, consider what happens when you find out that someone has lied to you. You feel less inclined to trust them next time, and also less inclined to trust other people more generally.

Is it Ever Right not to Tell the Truth?

If I'd written all the truth I knew for the past ten years, about 600 people — including me — would be rotting in prison cells from Rio to Seattle today. Absolute truth is a very rare and dangerous commodity in the context of professional journalism.

Hunter S. Thompson

There are two possible ways not to tell the truth: not to provide any information, and to provide false information.

First, you do not need to tell everyone everything. Excessive sharing of personal information is not welcome, even if it is the truth. Context is all-important, and you have to consider whether people need and/or want to know.

Sometimes it is better not to say something.

You also need to be able to remain silent if someone has confided in you and asked you not to share the information further.

Under these circumstances, it is therefore appropriate not to tell all the truth.

However, is it right to provide false information or lie?

Is the ‘ right ’ answer to the question ‘ Does my bum look big in this? ’ ever ‘ yes ’?

Well, maybe, in the changing room, before ‘ this ’ is bought. But maybe not. The truthful person will think very carefully about the right answer to that question.

Truthfulness is important, but so is not hurting others. Truthfulness and tact must go hand in hand, because otherwise the truth may be unacceptable to those who hear it.

And consider a government agent. They may need to lie, or pretend to be something that they are not, for the sake of the greater good. But they may still be true to themselves if they believe in the importance of the greater good. At what point does the truth become more important?

That is a matter of personal conscience.

The truth is rarely pure and never simple.

Oscar Wilde

So there are some circumstances in which lying may be acceptable or necessary.

It is, however, never acceptable to lie in order to make yourself look better, or to avoid trouble that you have brought on yourself.

If you lie about yourself, or to avoid trouble, and people find out, they are unlikely to trust you again.

Finding the Balance

As with many other qualities, you need to find the balance in truthfulness: neither overplaying nor underplaying either your virtues or your weaknesses.

It is as bad to pretend that you are less good at something than you are, as to exaggerate about your abilities.

Teaching Children About Truthfulness

Teaching children about truthfulness is hard.

You want them to understand that it is important to tell the truth. But if they tell you that they drew on the wall, you are going to be quite cross. There is, therefore, a serious incentive to lie, and say that it was their sibling or a visitor.

You may therefore need to think about their incentives to confess, and make sure that they understand the value that you put on telling the truth. You will need to ensure that you demonstrate that, not just say it, by rewarding truth-telling in some way, even if you still need to punish the original misdeed.

Jo and her children had been helping to sort the donations cupboard at the school. There were some small toys in there, which the children really liked. Jo told them to leave the toys alone because they belonged to the school.

On the way home, Jo realised that both children had taken something from the box. She asked if they had done so. Both denied it. Not wishing to give them the wrong incentive, Jo thought carefully and then said,

“ If I find that you have taken something, I will be cross. But if you lie to me, and then I find that you have lied, I will be really, really cross. Did you take something? ”

Both children confessed that they had done so. Jo explained that was stealing, but because they had told her the truth, she gave them a choice: they could either return the toys that they had taken, or they could replace each one with another from home. Both children opted to do that.

Looking after your physical and mental health is important. It is, however, not enough. Maslow’s famous hierarchy of needs suggests that most of us need more than that. We need to know that we are living our ‘best life’: that we are doing all we can to lead a ‘good life’ that we will not regret later on.

Based on some of our most popular content, this eBook will help you to live that life. It explains about the concepts of living well and ‘goodness’, together with how to develop your own ‘moral compass’.

short essay on truthfulness

Truth Essay Guide - Importance of a Truth Today

Any topic expressing a particular view of truth is a good idea as it's an all-time relevant issue. While working on a truth essay, you should combine examples from real-life, widely-accepted definitions, and personal experience to identify this phenomenon as accurately as possible.

If this writing guide, we will explain how to write an essay about truth, explore the matter in terms of prompts and topics, and provide you with some simple examples and tips.

What to Write in Your Truth Essay?

An essay on such a specific topic isn't a separate type of academic paper - it's just writing with a different subject matter. Defining it is not that easy. Our beliefs and perception of truth may vary depending on subjective experience and even life values. That is why one of the simplest strategies would be to come up with a definition of truth. There, you don't have to argue that lying is evil, and we should be honest with each other. You can just provide a trustworthy definition to the phenomena and analyze the way the world translates its importance. The main sources one can use for this paper are reliable websites and dictionaries.

And what if you're writing a philosophy essay? This is what is preferred the most amongst the college students because Philosophy offers more self-expression. Here, every opinion may be considered relevant if you provide the reader with reliable evidence and reasonable statements. But don't forget about the coherence. While being immersed in your thoughts, you may forget about the essay structure and start beating around the bush. To avoid that, pay attention to the structure of your truth essay and don't neglect to outline your assignment. Here is an example of how you can start this writing:

"I think that truth is one's perception of beliefs and decisions. The contrasting points of view predetermine the way each of us understands this phenomenon and answer the question, 'What is true or false?'. There is only one thing that unites all possible definitions of truth and makes people agree on it. That is something believed to be accurate while the opposite is wrong."

So, a philosophy essay on this topic is based more on the author's opinion than an official definition from the dictionary.

Master Absolute Truth Essay Writing

We've gone through two most popular assignment types that the students of different schools frequently deal with. But there are truth essays with other purposes that we must consider. Look through the following list with short explanations.

  • Descriptive. Involving touch, smell, hear, sight, taste, try to describe what a true is by these means.
  • Narrative. Create a narration in which the frankness will be a core idea.
  • Compare-contrast. Analyze why people express the same or completely different opinions on truth.
  • Cause-effect (problem-solution). Consider the consequences the world actually is facing because of the lie.
  • Argumentative. Formulate an idea related to the topic and provide arguments showing your statement is true and valid.
  • Persuasive. Convince the reader that a certain statement is/is not the truth.
  • Reflective. The way you reflect on being honest or telling lies.

So, when you are assigned to write an essay on truth, you may focus on the purpose that interests you the most (unless the type is assigned)

10 Great Truth Essay Topics

There are many students thinking that truth essays are all about "grass is green" and "the moon has craters" issues. The joke is it's not true - there are many great ideas to write about. It depends on which aspect you wish to focus as well as the type of academic paper you have to turn in. Here are some questions to consider:

  • The issue of true words through the history of mankind.
  • Locke's theories of truth correspondence.
  • The link between truth and honesty.
  • The challenges of being sincere.
  • The consequences of pretending to be someone else.
  • The idea of honesty in "Dear Evan Hansen."
  • Lies VS Truth: A never-never-ending battle.
  • Importance of being honest as a postmodern thought.
  • Situations in which lies could be justified.
  • Lying to dear people. How do they know about you being dishonest?
  • The correspondence theory of truth in everyday life.
  • How lying can distort our sense of reality.

The range of possible topic options is far wider - just decide a knowledge of what life aspect, science, or course you can successfully apply in your assignment.

Essay Thesis Statement

Each paper of this type should have a frankness-related thesis statement. That is the main idea of the entire writing that should appear in the opening paragraph (introduction). In your conclusion, you may paraphrase the thesis from the first paragraph to remind people of what you plan to talk about. However, we advise you to make conclusions more valuable than that and come up with thought-provoking ideas.

Essay about Honesty

Now, we're going to provide several examples, and the first one is an essay about truth and honesty. These two terms are interrelated, and one can barely exist without another. You may start with something like this:

"How is telling accurate things related to honesty? Honesty is one of the best human traits as it refers to always being open, no matter how bitter or sweet it is. Honesty is what makes human beings brave and robust, and that is why it is one of the most significant traits of candidates to become a president and other ruling authorities. It can lead to certain problems, but people tend to sympathize with those who are honest. It's an integral part of morality, which is the best policy in relationships; it's a significant building block."

Essay about Lies

Is life worth lying? In an essay about lies, you may compare and contrast two opposites. It is okay if you think that telling lies is more beneficial than being frank in specific cases. Share some examples and try to prove your position by providing relevant evidence. Here's an example that can inspire you:

"Is there a single person in the world who has never told a lie throughout life? Excluding Jesus Christ and some other saints from the Bible, everyone has experienced lies from both sides - telling and being told. A completely honest person is a myth. It's not because all people are bad and insincere. In my essay, I'm going to prove that telling lies in some situations may save one's life."

Importance of Being Frank in Our Life

Here, you should provide enough arguments against lying. You may recall some episodes from your favorite movies or just depict real-life examples when telling lies ended up dramatically for both sides. One of the good examples could be Evan Hansen from the "Dear Evan Hansen" musical. There, the socially anxious boy pretended to be the friend of his classmate who committed suicide to make friends with his family. Then, he becomes a hero in the eyes of other people. It all resulted in a big confusion, and the boy was left with nothing.

Truth Essays for Kids

Such an essay for kids should explain what the matter of truth is from a childish perspective. Avoid using difficult, complex terms from philosophy or other science as your target audience won't understand the text. Try to explain what each complex term means.

"In human frankness, there is essential and biggest virtue. Sincerity refers to speaking exactly what you think and feel, and an honest man never tells a lie. We should start telling only the true things since our early days, and here, a lot depends on our parents. You might have had these conversations with them already. Lying to parents is the biggest sin, so practice being honest with them and people around. You may tell lies only in sporadic cases, ensuring that no one will suffer from it, but benefit."

A short essay on why truthfulness is a supreme virtue

Why must you tell the truth? Building good relationships in society is always important and to do that you need to gain the trust of others. The analysis presented here will help you to understand why trust is essential. This short essay describes the importance of remaining truthful and tips to remain truthful.

Introduction

What is truth, why some are prone to tell a lie, importance of truthfulness, tips to remain truthful.

short essay on truthfulness

A nice essay on the power of truthfulness. In this world, many people resort to telling lies due to various vested interests or evil plans but they always remain stressed, thinking that if it is found out then some implications and consequences would arise, and then they remain busy in covering it in one way or other. They may get some advantage in their lives by doing so but that would be limited to some materialistic gain only and in a nutshell, they would be a loser as they would lose their mental piece. To remain happy and contented is one of the prime aims of our lives and I strongly feel that a truthful person can attain it by simply speaking the truth and remain free of any such stress. What is the harm in telling truth when it is the best way to deal and talk with people? Further, the reputation of a truthful person is far more higher than the counterparts and the dignity with which he lives in the world is enviable.

Telling lies is easy but standing on the facts and truths is a real virtue. Come what may, some people may not like to tell lies. It may be difficult. But that will give us peace of mind and there will not be any tension or anxiety in our minds. We may be trying to misguide others by telling lies. But the moment others know that we are telling lies, what value they will have for us? By telling lies we may be running away from difficult situations but later we may get into much more difficult situations. Instead of that, if we face the consequences by accepting the truth, then we can control further damage, and thus we will be free from tensions and anxieties.

Telling truth is effortless. But it is also true that telling the truth is a little bit difficult because when you want to tell the truth you need more courage and more patience at that time. It might be possible when anyone is telling the truth or disclosing the truth it may make some people angry or jealous or make them your enemy. People sometimes tell a lie or hide the truth because they do not want to create distances hence tells the people what they want to hear. Sometimes people also hide a truth that is painful or shameful and to cover these kinds of truth they lied repeatedly. But the truth is a thing that can not be hidden for long and one day it reveals definitely. But a person with truthfulness does not worry about these things. By telling truth, confidence is developed that helps a person to meet further challenges.

Telling the truth is not only a habit but also a good value, which probably lives in every person since childhood, but gradually society or some experience slowly leads a person to the path of falsehood. In the beginning, it starts with small lies which sometimes we ourselves keep promoting. And at one point in time, such a person starts taking the help of lies on every matter. It is like some people do not like to speak the truth and lies naturally come out of them. In this way, by telling lies, they create a mountain for themselves and later repent. The truth seems a bit difficult because it definitely takes courage, but once you tell the truth, you feel lighter and there is no blame or burden in your thoughts.

A child is pure in his heart. He does not know how to lie. He does not know how to manipulate. It is the elders who lay the stone of lie in front of him. He is so unaware of it until he slowly starts learning it. Initially, he will mess up. While lying he will be caught red-handed. Later, he masters it and uses this trait as often as possible to get things done for him. When parents do not want their kids to get hurt, they lie to them. They tell them that there is a ghost in the darkness. There is a monster waiting for them in the basement or outside the door. Their intention is not wrong. They want their kids to remain safe in front of their eyes. Whatever their intention is but it is fabricated on a lie. Truthfulness is the easiest of all traits. We don't have to do much in it. All we have to do is be who we are and say what we want to say. In short, we just have to express our honesty to the outside world. We don't have to alter it in any manner.

Truthfulness within the child can be nurtured within the family environment where the parents would have to play crucial roles in strengthening this virtue. The child would pick up different traits as practiced in the families. If either of the partner in the family is not honest enough in the dealings or manners, twisting the facts very often thinking that such alterations would not impact the child, it could be a misleading idea. Lies cannot be suppressed for long from the child and the child would learn the reality sooner or later but by the time parents realize their mistakes of distorting the facts before the child, the child would have learned this trait very cleverly- more so with the association of his friends. So the starting point is the family for picking up both worst and best virtues and the parents should take a note of this fact. They should always encourage their kids to be honest in their behavior and at the same time be bold enough to represent the facts correctly without diluting the same. This will go a long way in the development of the personality of the child.

Short essay on Truthfulness

short essay on truthfulness

Truthfulness is a virtue. It is very easy and often very difficult to be truthful. Ordinarily, by truthfulness we mean speaking truth. But one should be truthful in his words, his thought and his action. If he speaks truth and does the reverse then he is not truthful. Therefore, to be truthful is’ really a very difficult thing.

We believe that there is reward in heaven for our noble deeds. Similarly we are given harsh punishment for our vices and miss-deeds. Truthfulness is a means of getting reward from God. God is omniscient. He observes all our actions. To be truthful is to win the favour of God.

Truthfulness has a deep impact upon our moral character. A truthful person is trusted in every work. He is respected everywhere. Even his children enjoy the result of his virtue of truthfulness. The character of a truthful person shines like gold.

In the Tretaya age, Lord Rarnachandra was truthful. As a Prince he was truthful to His mother’s command. He respected His father’s order and went to the forest for fourteen years by sacrificing the throne of Ayodhya to his younger brother Bharat. He acted truthfully. He even deserted his dear wife Sita being truthful to the impression of the common men in the kingdom.

ADVERTISEMENTS:

In India Mohan Das Karam Chand Gandhi was a truthful man. He exercised love and non-violence against the British rulers and won freedom for our country. He not only spoke truth, but also acted and thought truthfully. He wore Khadi and told people to wear it. He became mentally upset when any Indian showed violent behaviour to the British ruler. He himself adopted simple living and told others to follow it.

A truthful person like Mahatma Gandhi is never disturbed by fear and anxiety. Fear and anxiety enter the mind of a liar, not a truthful man. His life and character become an example for others. He inspires others to be truthful.

Now-a-days, the meaning of truthfulness has changed. It is a deceptive word today. By trying to be truthful, people are telling half-truths which are more dangerous than pure lie.

For example, the parents of a young boy while trying to negotiate a marriage proposal for him gently declare that they do not want any dowry for their son. The son himself also shows his simplicity. But their real greed for wealth remains hidden in their minds. Immediately after marriage they begin to torture the bride and force her to bring dowry from her parents. Truthful persons never do such thing.

Truthfulness Paragraph Writing Example For Students

The Bible says, “Let your ‘yes’ be ‘yes,’ and your ‘no’, ‘no.’ Anything more than this is from the evil one. ” (Matthew 5:33–37) It also says, “The Lord detests lying lips, but he delights in people who are trustworthy.” Proverbs 12:22) One of the most important things in life is trustworthiness, and the only way to gain trust is to demonstrate integrity.

about truthfulness paragraph

Truthfulness is associated with God’s law and word, truth, and its synonyms, and generally with a truthful statement. The word “truth” itself has several meanings, such as, “the true or actual state of a matter,” “the body of real things, events, and facts,” “the quality of being honest and having integrity,” “a true statement or account,” and “the honest or sincere intention.”

Truthfulness is important in the society because if people could not trust each other, there would be no sense of order. In a world where there is already so much chaos and controversy, truthfulness or honesty can help individuals maintain their integrity and gain the respect and trust of others.

Benefits of Truthfulness

It is said that truthfulness is a “spear” and that falsehood is a “gun.” The truth can pierce through the armor of ignorance, causing much damage and loss. The truth can also fall harmlessly to the ground like so many useless words. The bullets of falsehood can spray in all directions, causing much injury and pain. The difference between the two lies in the intent of the person using them.

The truth is like a sword that can be used to defend or attack. On the one hand, when used by an experienced person who uses the truth to help and enlighten people, it can overcome ignorance and prejudice and lead to a better world. On the other hand, it can destroy life when used maliciously by a destructive person to hurt people and persuade them to do wrong.

Truthfulness Is A Good Habit

A child is not born with truthfulness; it has to be acquired. Parents need to teach the child the importance of being honest and, at the same time, they need to be role models in giving the child a good start in life.

Truthfulness is a great value that operates in every aspect of life . it can be an individual, a family, or a society.

Parents need to tell the child early on that being truthful is good quality and that all parents teach their children to be truthful. Parents should ensure that the child understands the importance of truthfulness and the value of good habits and rewards. Parents should also discuss the consequences of lying with the child, especially in cases where a child has been asked to lie or when a lie is appropriate.

A child may be encouraged to give reasons why a false statement was made instead of a truthful one. The parent should ensure that their child is familiar with the difference between the use of words like “don’t know” and “I don’t remember.” A child should also be encouraged to always tell the truth to their parents.

An open communication environment should be created between the child and the parents, in which they are free to express their views without fear of judgment.

The best way for parents to ensure that their children understand the value of truthfulness is to set a good example for themselves.

Read our detailed notes on the Francis Bacon’s famous essay, “Of Truth”. Our notes cover Of Truth summary and analysis.

Of Truth by Francis Bacon Summary & Analysis

In this essay, Bacon has presented the objective truth in various manifestations.Similarly, Bacon shares with us the subjective truth, operative in social life. “OF TRUTH” is Bacon’s masterpiece that shows his keen observation of human beings with special regard to truth. In the beginning of the essay, Bacon rightly observes that generally people do not care for truth as Pilate, the governor of the Roman Empire, while conducting the trial of Jesus Christ, cares little for truth:

“What is truth? Said jesting Pilate; and would not stay for an answer.”

Advancing his essay, Bacon explores the reasons why the people do not like truth. First, truth is acquired through hard work and man is ever reluctant to work hard. Secondly, truth curtails man’s freedom. More than that the real reason of man’s disliking to truth is that man is attached to lies which Bacon says “a natural though corrupt love of the lie itself.” Man loves falsehood because, Bacon says that truth is as if the bright light of the day and would show what men, in actual, are. They look attractive and colourful in the dim light of lies.He futher adds,

“A mixture of a lie doth ever add pleasure.”

It is a fact that man prefers to cherish illusions, which make his life more interesting. With a profound observation of man’s psychology, Bacon states that if deprived of false pride and vanities, the human mind would contract like a deflated balloon and these human beings would become poor, sad and ill. However, poetic untruth is not gone unnoticed by Bacon’s piercing intellect. He says though poetic untruth is a wine of the Devil in priest’s eyes, yet it is not as harmful as the other lies are. Bacon being a literary artist illustrates this concept with an apt imagery that the poetic untruth is but the shadow of a lie. The enquiry of truth, knowledge of truth and belief of truth are compared with the enjoyment of love. Such a comparison lends the literary charm to this essay.Bacon further says in that the last act of creation was to create rational faculty, which helps in finding truth, is the finished product of God’s blessing as he says:

“… The last was the light of reason…is the illumination of his spirit.”

Bacon’s moral idealism is obvious when he advancing his argument in favour of truth asserts that the earth can be made paradise only with the help of truth. Man should ever stick to truth in every matter, do the act of charity and have faith in every matter, do the act of charity and have faith in God. Bacon’s strong belief in truth and Divinity is stated thus:

“Certainly, it is heaven upon earth, to have a man’s mind move in charity, rest in Providence, and turn upon the poles of truth.”

From the objective truth, Bacon passes judgment, to the subjective truth, which he calls “the truth of civil business”. It is the compelling quality of truth, Bacon observes, that the persons who do not practice truth, acknowledge it. Bacon’s idealistic moral attitude is obvious in these lines when he says: “….. that clear and round dealing is the honour of man’s nature; and that mixture of falsehood is like alloy in coin of gold and silver, which may make the metal work better, but it embaseth it.”

Bacon further asserts that the liars are like a snake that goes basely upon the belly and not upon the feet. Imagery comprising comparison is apt and convincing. Moreover, Bacon refers to Montaigne who is of the view that “a lie faces God and shrinks from man”. Bacon adds that falsehood is the height of wickedness and as such will invite the Judgment of God upon all human beings on Doom’s day. Therefore, Bacon concludes his essay with didacticism with a tinge of Christian morality.

In the essay, “OF TRUTH”, there is no digression. All the arguments in the essay pertain to the single main idea, truth. Bacon’s wide learning is clearly observed when he refers to Pilate (history), Lucian (Greek literature), Creation, Montaigne (a French essayist). “OF TRUTH” is enriched with striking similes and analogies, such as he equates liars as a snake moving basely on its belly, mixture of falsehood is like an alloy of gold and silver.Similarly, truth is ‘open day light’ whereas lie is ‘candle light i.e fake dim light. Truth is ‘a pearl’ i.e worthy and precious whereas ,lie is ‘a diamond’ that reflects light illusions when placed in daylight.

The essay “OF TRUTH” is not ornamental as was the practice of the Elizabethan prose writers. Bacon is simple, natural and straightforward in his essay though Elizabethan colour is also found in “OF TRUTH” because there is a moderate use of Latinism in the essay. Economy of words is found in the essay not alone, but syntactic brevity is also obvious in this essay. We find conversational ease in this essay, which is the outstanding feature of Bacon’s style. There is a peculiar feature of Bacon i.e. aphorism. We find many short, crispy, memorable and witty sayings in this essay.

Therefore, Bacon’s essay “OF TRUTH” is rich in matter and manner. This is really a council ‘civil and moral’.

Short Essay About Honesty

essay on importance of being honest

The saying’ honesty is the best policy is probably heard by everyone. However, it is hard to be honest with everyone around, and even more, it takes a lot of courage to be honest with yourself. On the other hand, a parent cannot expect their child to be honest in life if they are not honest to themselves. Hence, it would not be unfair to say that honesty is a two-way street. But even if the other person is being dishonest, one should stick to the policy of being honest. The reasons why honesty is the best policy are discussed below.

First of all, honesty is an attribute that helps you develop other traits such as kindness and moral integrity in your personality. Truthfulness is a trait that is instilled in your personality as a kid, and it only works in life if the people around you are truthful with each other. It also helps you to be courageous and say whatever your heart believes in. It also makes you and your opinions authentic. If you are honest, people will rely on you and your opinions if they ever need one.

However, it is very easy to lie to people, but there is no way you can do that to yourself because it will never sustain. You can only have peace of mind if you are truthful in your day-to-day happenings. It fosters a trustworthy relationship between people and helps in bringing people together.

Therefore, honesty is the fastest way to prevent a mistake from turning into a failure, and it’s the first chapter of life when it comes to wisdom. Thereby, one should make an effort to leave a legacy of honesty and truthfulness for their generations to come.

Essay Sample on Why Is It Important to Be Honest

why is it important to be honest essay

Honesty is the best policy, they say. But, certain situations in life leave you wondering whether or not you should tell the truth. In situations like these, many people say, often go with the fabricated story. It is because they find it easy to get away with things this way. But is it the best way to handle complicated situations? Certainly not because no matter what the consequences may be, being honest should be the only option. This essay will discuss how honesty can take you places in life.

The important reason why is it important to be honest is that it’s the easiest thing to practice to be successful, happy from within, and fulfilled. For instance, if someone is caught in a situation where they have done something wrong and are afraid to tell the truth to their parents when asked, telling lies and deceiving the parents would only make things worse in the long run. They may get away with what they have done, but their conscience will keep nagging them. Besides, if the parents somehow find out the truth later, they may not trust their child anymore. On the other hand, if the child is honest, the parents will probably scold them, but eventually, they will support them and help them get out of any situation they are in. Being honest can cause a moment of discomfort for many people, but talking the truth eventually makes the situation in their favor. Moreover, their honesty would increase their respect in others’ hearts, and they will likely get rewards for being honest. All in all, honesty is about being true to yourself and others about what you want and who you are. It helps promote openness and enables people to establish consistency in how they present the truth.

On the contrary, lying is equally damaging whether people do it to themselves or others. When they lie, they delude themselves into believing what they are saying. Even if it’s a tiny lie, it is damaging, as it will keep getting bigger over time. People who lie confuse themselves and confuse others. Moreover, they lose credibility and put themselves in jeopardy. Frequently, people lie to themselves to do something that they know is wrong. For instance, if they convince themselves to steal from a wicked person, they have probably lied that it is okay to steal from bad people and they need it. It may produce temporary pleasure, but it won’t take the wrongdoer anything.

On the other hand, when people are dishonest to others to create a good image of themselves, they damage their credibility in the long run. For instance, if someone wants to impress their employer in the first interview by deceiving them, it could later harm their work life. Sooner or later, they may find out the truth, and the liar will be in trouble or may have to tell more lies to build up a facade personality. Doing so may help them succeed in the short run, but they can’t go places where honesty and truthfulness can take them.

To conclude, despite the temptation and ease of use, lying gets no one anywhere in the end. On the contrary, dishonest people stay right in their tracks or, much worse, go backward. This is why it is important to rewire the brain about its importance to stay truthful, regardless of the situation. Besides, it is equally important, to be honest with oneself and practice honesty in daily interactions.

English Essay on “The Duty and Expediency of Truthfulness” for School, College Students, Long and Short English Essay, Speech for Class 8, 9, 10, 12 and Competitive Exams.

The Duty and Expediency of Truthfulness

There is no need to dwell on the fact that truthfulness is a duty. Everyone will agree that it is our duty to tell the truth, and that all falsehood and lying is morally wrong. This we admit at any rate in theory, even though we are not always truthful in practice. The ideal of truthfulness is well put in the oath which every witness has to take, that he will “tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth”. Yet, in spite of this, there is an enormous amount of lying and falsehood; and in this matter” none of us is without sin”.

As to the expediency of truthfulness, however, there may be two opinions. “Expedient” means wise from a worldly point of view ; and it reminds us of the proverb,. “Honesty is the best policy”—a proverb that has a suspiciously worldly flavour. It means that from a worldly point of view it pays to be honest, and that it is expedient or politic to be truthful. Now is this true ? A really honest man will not ask whether honesty pays. He feels he must be honest and truthful even if it brings him loss or suffering, simply because it is right to be honest and wrong to be dishonest.

But does honesty pay ? Probably it does in the long run. In business, for example, a man who deals straightforwardly with the public will generally establish a reputation for fair dealing that will be a fine business asset. People will be glad to deal with a man whose word they can trust; and, though he may not make a fortune, he will have a sound and satisfactory business. On the other hand, there is no doubt that success is often due to trickery, and great fortunes have been built up on dishonesty. Too many rogues have proved by experience that for them dishonesty has been the best policy. Indeed, it seems that worldly success is too often due more to ability, lucky opportunities, and business cunning, than to honesty.

And many examples could be given of men who, from a worldly point of view, have failed because they were truthful and honest. A martyr who prefers to be burnt at the stake rather than deny what he believed to be true, may be a hero; but in the eyes of worldly men, who think only of worldly success, he is a sad failure.

But if we look at such cases from the spiritual point of view—if we believe that truth and righteousness are far more important than worldly success-then, in the highest sense, honesty and truthfulness are in the end the best policy. “For what shall it profit a man if he gain the whole world and lose his own soul ?”

2 Minute Speech On Truthfulness In English

Good morning to everyone in this room. I would like to thank the principal, the teachers, and my dear friends for allowing me to speak to you today about truthfulness. Truthfulness is a virtue that requires being true to one’s words, thoughts, and actions.

Being truthful is challenging since bad acts and vices will receive severe punishment in hell while good deeds will receive a reward. Because God is omniscient and watches all of our deeds, truthfulness is a method of receiving a reward from Him. It has a significant influence on our moral character since a truthful person is trusted and appreciated in all situations. A true person’s character shines like gold.

Lord Rarnachandra, Mohan Das Karam Chand Gandhi, and Mahatma Gandhi were all true persons who stood up to the British rulers with compassion and nonviolence. They not only talked the truth, but they also behaved and thought the truth.

Gandhi wore a Khadi and encouraged others to do so, and he felt agitated when any Indian acted violently toward the British authority. He was never bothered by fear or worry, and his life and character became a model for others to follow in being true. Many nowadays speak half-truths, which are more damaging than outright lies.

As an example, the parents of a young boy do not want money for their son, but their desire for wealth drives them to torment the wife and compel her to fetch dowry from her parents. Such acts are never done by truthful people. Thank you.

Donald Trump’s Hush-Money Trial Is a Referendum on Truth

T he closing arguments for Donald Trump’s hush-money trial have ended and a jury now decides Trump’s fate in a Manhattan courtroom. But in many ways, it is truth itself that is on trial.

For the past several weeks, jurors have heard arguments regarding Trump’s alleged attempt to disinform Americans and sway the 2016 presidential election by falsifying business records and concealing hush-money payments to adult film actress Stormy Daniels. Depending on your view of Trump, the trial is either a much-awaited moment of accountability or a politically motivated case of prosecutorial overreach. But the case represents something more than the guilt or innocence of the former president—it is a referendum on whether facts and law still matter. Depending on which view one has of the case, the verdict likely will be seen as a commitment to the rule of law or a miscarriage of justice.

First comes the finding of facts. In our post-truth era, a jury’s quest for the facts may seem like a quaint notion. Yet every day in courtrooms across America, citizens selected at random gather to discern facts from evidence and render verdicts. Their verdicts to hold people accountable for committing crimes is what upholds the rule of law.

Read More: 5 Things We Learned From the Trump Trial

In Trump’s case, the jury will soon deliberate on whether Trump falsified business records regarding the payment of $130,000 to Daniels, and did so with intent to conceal violations of campaign and tax laws. According to the testimony of former Trump lawyer Michael Cohen, the October 2016 release of a recording of Trump making disparaging comments about groping women on an open mic for the Access Hollywood television show made it imperative to prevent another disclosure about sexual impropriety before the election. Unless Trump blocked Americans from learning about his alleged act of adultery, Cohen testified, Trump believed his campaign would suffer a “ total disaster .”  In addition, David Pecker , former publisher of the National Enquirer, testified at trial that in August 2016, shortly after Trump became the GOP nominee for president, he paid $150,000 to silence former Playboy model Karen McDougal regarding a extra-marital relationship with Trump.

Some critics of the case argue that there is nothing illegal about paying hush money, and that charges would not have been filed at all if the defendant’s name were anything other than Donald Trump. Testimony during the trial has disclosed that other famous men entered agreements with AMI, the parent company of the National Enquirer, to kill stories alleging extra-marital affairs.

But that criticism misses the point. It is not the payment of hush money alone that is the crime. It is the cover-up by someone who is a candidate for president. Running for public office brings with it the responsibility of filing accurate campaign finance reports. The indictment charges that when Trump allegedly caused 34 checks, invoices, and ledger entries to be falsely characterized as legal expenses, he intended to conceal violations of state and federal campaign finance laws as well as tax laws. New York law makes it a crime to conspire to promote or prevent the election of a candidate by illegal means. Federal law prohibits corporate contributions, like the one made by AMI, and limits the amount of individual contributions to $2,700, far below the $130,000 allegedly made by Cohen. When Trump reimbursed Cohen, he allegedly falsely characterized the payments as income, resulting in the tax charge.

In addition to violating the law, the alleged scheme, if true, also betrays the trust of the American people. Voters have a right to know the facts about a candidate when casting their ballots. If candidates can covertly manipulate public perception to serve their own interests, they undermine the public’s ability to make decisions based on facts.

The jurors will decide whether the prosecution has met its burden of proof beyond a reasonable doubt and return a verdict. The prosecution’s case is far from perfect. Daniels and Cohen both admitted to making prior inconsistent statements. Cohen, who went to prison for perjury, even admitted to stealing money from the former president. Even if convicted, as a first-time offender, Trump is unlikely to face a prison term of any significance or be removed from the ballot as the presumptive GOP nominee for president. But the verdict will likely elicit strong opinions, even from people who did not listen to all of the evidence or review all of the exhibits, as the jury did.

This is where the rule of law will be tested. As a former prosecutor, I was trained to argue cases in court zealously, but to accept a jury’s verdict with respect, even when it was not the decision I had sought. I learned to acknowledge that reasonable minds can disagree, and that it is more important to uphold public confidence in our legal system than to obtain a conviction in any particular case. To support our legal system means that we focus on a fair process, and tolerate decisions with which we disagree. Otherwise, our criminal justice system would fall apart.

But throughout this trial, Trump and his supporters have groomed the public to distrust the fairness of the trial. Trump has called the case a “sham” and “a Biden show trial, ” even though the case was brought by a state court prosecutor outside the president’s federal chain of command. Trump has called Justice Juan Merchan “corrupt” and “highly conflicted. ” Trump even falsely claimed that the gag order entered to prevent either party from making comments outside of court about witnesses, court staff and jurors prevents him from testifying, a “misunderstanding” Justice Merchan corrected on the record, but a narrative that Trump can use to explain away a decision not to testify.

On May 14, a group of Republican members of Congress attended the trial, dressed in identical navy blue suits with white shirts and red ties. Outside the courthouse, they addressed the media, and House Speaker Mike Johnson disparaged all of the pending criminal cases against Trump. “These are politically motivated trials, and they are a disgrace,” he said. “It is election interference.” Their unity and uniforms signaled an allegiance to one man over the rule of law.

Their stunt was the latest chapter in Trump’s playbook to disparage institutions that might stand in his way. By undermining public confidence in potential critics, Trump can downplay their inevitable criticism as illegitimate. Blunting potential critics is the reason he refers to the media as “the enemy of the people” and career civil servants as “the deep state.” And now, according to Trump, any case filed to hold him accountable for alleged criminal conduct is simply “election interference.” Not only do these claims provide pretextual defenses for Trump, they also tend to reduce public confidence in the institutions of democracy.

The jury’s decision in this case will end this trial. But public opinion will render the verdict on truth and the future of our faith in the justice system.

Why investors are doubling down on Truth Social despite Trump's historic conviction

Investors in the company behind Truth Social are vowing to buy more shares to support former President Trump after his historic conviction.

Investors in the company behind Truth Social are vowing to buy more shares to support former President Trump after his historic conviction.

When a New York jury convicted former President Trump, supporter Justin Peedin in Florida was outraged.

So he decided to take a stand: by buying more shares in Trump’s social media venture — while encouraging others to do the same.

“It’s almost time to show them what DJTArmy is all about!!!! Buy more today and hollllllld,” Peedin wrote in Truth Socia l a little before trading started on Friday.

Peedin is part of a legion of Trump supporters who own shares in Trump Media & Technology Group — the company behind Truth Social.

Many supporters have invested despite all the warnings from professional investors about a company that's losing money and has little revenue.

And now, at a time when many investors would normally flee because of the former president's conviction, Trump Media shareholders are vowing to double down over their anger about a conviction they view as a miscarriage of justice.

At least on Friday, their push to pump up the stock didn't pan out. After initially opening up about 15%, shares ended the day down 5%.

But far from being discouraged, Trump Media shareholders are vowing to hang on.

It is the latest twist in what has been a volatile ride for Trump Media shares since making its stock market debut in March by merging with a listed shell company.

For those who invested early, it has been a remarkably lucrative ride so far. But nobody has benefited more than former President Trump.

And now, whether or not these shareholders decide to hang on will determine the fortunes of a company many in Wall Street have panned as a dud.

A lot of money at stake

Trump has a lot riding on Trump Media. He owns nearly two-thirds of the company.

Despite taking a hit on Friday, Trump’s stake was still valued at $5.6 billion — a windfall that earlier this year placed him in the Bloomberg Billionaires Index for the first time.

Trump Media shares were volatile a day after the former president -- and majority shareholder of the company -- became a convicted felon.

'Buy DJT' is a new rallying cry for Trump supporters

It’s an incredible value for a company that lost over $300 million in the first quarter and had almost negligible revenue. It also had just under 700,000 monthly active users in April, compared to over 76 million for X, according to data from Similarweb.

Trump’s newfound fortune is all thanks to hundreds of thousands of investors who have bought into Trump Media, many of them to show support for former President Trump.

Justin Peedin is one of them

Peedin became a Trump supporter in 2015. He was teaching English in an Arab village in Israel. He had left a sales gig in a call center in Maryland. He says he left partly to escape the racial strife in the U.S and partly to reconnect with his Jewish heritage.

“I figured if I can help make peace over there, you can make peace anywhere,” he says.

Peedin voted for Trump twice and he believes the world now needs Trump more than ever. It’s why he also decided to invest in Trump Media.

Dollar General is attracting new customers, as inflation-weary shoppers hunt for bargains. Many of the discount chain's core customers are checking out with fewer items in their baskets.

Discounting is back in fashion, as Americans get tired of paying more

“Unfortunately, the world's not just hugs and kisses everywhere. There're people that really want to do harm. And we need strong leadership,” he says. “I'm scared for the future. So, 2024 is a big year. And that's why I'm invested in this, you know?”

Truth Social’s appeal

Peedin is a huge fan of Truth Social. It’s a platform where he and others have found relief from what they see as censorship in rivals such as X and Facebook.

And Peedin believes that if the former president returns to the White House in November, Truth Social would become an incredibly valuable company.

“I think he's got a good shot at winning again. And if he's only using this platform, I feel like the sky's the limit with it," Peedin says. "And I also believe in it, which is, like, very rare, to have an investment in something you believe in so much."

That belief has gotten him a pretty handsome profit so far — at least on paper.

Peedin got in early, investing just over $50,000. He paid an average of around $35. With Trump Media now trading at $49, Peedin is sitting on a paper gain of around $20,000 — a sizeable return for a stock that media mogul Barry Diller recently referred to as a "scam."

Peedin says he bought a few more shares on Friday, a day after Trump’s conviction.

If he were to lose it all, Peedin says he can still put food on the table for his wife and his toddler.

"I'm not gambling my son's diaper money, you know?" he says.

Wall Street is not impressed

Not everybody has made money in Trump Media.

The stock has been incredibly volatile day to day. They are now slightly below the day before its debut, but they have delivered a nice return to those like Peedin who invested early.

Many professional investors have warned against the stock, which is trading at valuations well above what its financial performance should dictate — even though there are multiple risks facing Truth Social.

Former U.S. President Donald Trump holds a press conference following the verdict in his hush-money trial at Trump Tower on May 31, 2024 in New York City.

Vintage Trump remarks after convictions renew dilemma for news media and voters alike

The company is trying to expand into online video and has said it plans to grow through mergers and acquisitions, both of which could turn out badly.

Most importantly, professional investors warn that the company’s fortunes are tied to former President Trump, who’s due to be sentenced in July after being convicted of the 34 felony counts.

Trump also still faces several other state and federal criminal cases, and the stock’s performance could be directly impacted by his electoral fortunes in what is expected to be a heated presidential campaign.

Trump's stake

There are even more risks looming. Trump could one day cash in and bail from the company — which could hurt shareholders like Peedin.

Trump can’t sell his shares yet. Under his current agreement, he has to hold on to them until September, right in the midst of the presidential campaign. But he could be given permission to sell even sooner by Trump Media’s board, which is full of friendly voices, like his son Donald Trump Jr.

4 takeaways from the historic felony conviction of Donald Trump

Yet none of these risks faze Peedin.

He still believes Truth Social is a startup with immense potential even after Trump's conviction. He has an unwavering belief in the former commander in chief — and he believes Trump would not hurt supporters like him by cashing out of the company.

“I think he truly cares about the people that support him,” he says. “Because if you look at it, that would be kind of like stabbing everyone in the back. And I don't see him doing that.”
