About Us: The Institute for Modeling Collaboration

The Institute for Modeling Collaboration and Innovation (IMCI) is a multidisciplinary, collaborative research program housed at the University of Idaho and funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). We strive to create an intellectual, cultural, and physical environment that fosters synergy for biomedical research. We see ourselves as the epicenter of all research involving modeling at the university.

The focal point of IMCI is the Collaboratorium, a space and a culture for collaborative modeling.  It brings together faculty and students from both the empirical and modeling realms with postdoctoral scientists who reside in the Collaboratorium and devote full-time effort to collaborative modeling.  The central idea of the Collaboratorium is that when a group of bright, skilled people share ideas about each other’s work, it will generate better, more innovative research.

The physical Collaboratorium is located in the Integrated Research and Innovation Center (IRIC) on the Moscow campus and is furnished with AV equipment to facilitate remote meetings. More than a dozen Working Groups representing 16 departments and 8 colleges meet regularly to brainstorm ideas, discuss research and share understanding.

To foster the convergence in interdisciplinary biomedical research, we have three Specific Aims:

• Conduct model-based, interdisciplinary research that leads faculty to transition to independence.
• Establish a collaborative and synergistic Modeling Core to impel interdisciplinary research and to build institutional research capacity.
• Increase the participation in biomedical research at the University of Idaho.

The University of Idaho (UI) has a rich research environment that is well suited for interdisciplinary studies in biomedical research. It is a high research activity, land-grant institution committed to undergraduate and graduate education, including the medical and veterinary education programs for the state of Idaho. UI has the infrastructure in place to support successful faculty research and promotes a supportive and collaborative research environment through workshops, socials, and seed grant opportunities.

University of Idaho is a public institution that was founded in 1889. It has a total undergraduate enrollment of 8,809 (fall 2022), its setting is rural, and the campus size is 810 acres. It utilizes a semester-based academic calendar. University of Idaho's ranking in the 2024 edition of Best Colleges is National Universities, #185. Its in-state tuition and fees are $8,816; out-of-state tuition and fees are $28,052.

University of Idaho is located in the northwestern part of the state, in the city of Moscow. Undergraduates at Idaho can choose from many majors within eight colleges, and graduate students can earn degrees in more than 80 master's programs, including business , law , engineering and education . Outside the classroom, students can join more than 200 organizations, play club-level or intramural sports or explore the city. Moscow is home to movie theaters, cafés, restaurants and the four-day Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival.

Student athletes can try out for Idaho's silver-and-gold sports teams, which are called the Vandals, thanks to an old newspaper account of the 1917 basketball team vandalizing its opponents on the court. The Vandals mainly compete in the NCAA Division I Big Sky Conference. Notable Idaho alumni include Mark Felt, better known as Deep Throat, who was the source to reporters during the Watergate political scandal in the 1970s.

An absolutely awesome university with lots to offer. High academic rigor. I graduated feeling I got what I paid for. Situated in Northern Idaho Palouse region. I would describe this university as having a traditional feel. It wasn't uncommon to eat dinner with Professors. The environment felt safe. I wasn't just a number. Lots of activities on and around campus.
