Discovery Of Electricity

The discovery of electricity is a story that spans centuries, with many important figures contributing to our understanding of this powerful force.

It all began in ancient times, with the Greeks and Romans experimenting with static electricity by rubbing different materials together. They observed that certain materials, such as amber, would become charged and attract nearby objects.

In the 1600s, English scientist William Gilbert conducted extensive research on electricity and magnetism, and coined the term "electricus," meaning "like amber." He also discovered that many materials, not just amber, could become charged.

In the 1700s, several scientists made significant advancements in the understanding of electricity. Benjamin Franklin conducted his famous kite experiment, proving that lightning was a form of electricity. He also invented the lightning rod, which protected buildings from lightning strikes.

In the 1800s, scientists such as Alessandro Volta and Michael Faraday made even more strides in our understanding of electricity. Volta created the first battery, while Faraday discovered the principle of electromagnetic induction, which is the basis for the operation of generators and motors.

As the years went on, scientists continued to make advancements in our understanding of electricity. The invention of the light bulb by Thomas Edison in 1879 changed the world forever, making electric light a practical reality for the first time.

Throughout the years, many people have contributed to our understanding of electricity, and it is a story of curiosity, experimentation and perseverance. Today we are able to enjoy the convenience and comfort that electricity has brought to our lives, but it all started with a spark of curiosity and a desire to understand the world around us.

Electricity Is the Most Important Invention: Essay Introduction

Electricity is the most important invention: essay main body, electricity is the most important invention: essay conclusion, reference list.

The contemporary world and its society are known for the highly developed technologies that make people’s lives easier and simpler. The number of useful and sophisticated inventions grows nearly every day. The scientists work on new ways of studying the world we live in, exploring its resources and using them to improve our quality of life.

This process began centuries ago, yet its most active stage was launched in the middle of the nineteenth century, and one of the major moving forces of the rapid technological development was the reception and application of electricity.

The period of time when the scientists of Europe first started using electricity to create powerful engines and high functioning mechanisms gave a push to such processes as industrialization, urbanization, and globalization; it made a massive impact on the world’s society, its way of living, and habits, it produced massive cultural, political and economic changes.

There is a common misconception that electricity actually may be an invention, but it is one of the natural forms of energy, it has always existed on our planet so it could not possibly be “invented”. The most influential and powerful invention was the discovery of electricity and of ways of using it for various technologies.

Historically, some of the first encounters humans made with electricity date back to Ancient Greece, when people first discovered the rubbing fur and amber together created the attraction between the two surfaces and also lighter objects, which occurred due to static electricity (Atkinson, 2014). This cannot be called a discovery because the reasons or practical use of this phenomenon were not understood.

The more recent interest towards electricity started to form in the 1600s when William Gilbert, inspired by the writings of ancient Greeks created his own work about magnetism, he also was the one who introduced the term “electrical” (Bellis, 2014). After that, such scientists as Descartes, Fermat, Grimaldi, Hooke, Von Guericke and Gray developed the knowledge about electricity.

In 1747 came Franklin’s theory of positive and negative electric charges (History of Electricity from its Beginning, 2012). This theory was followed by Faraday’s discovery of electric induction and the work of electric currents. Finally, the geniuses of Edison and Tesla brought light to all the average households and made the first hydroelectric engines and plants possible (The History of Electricity, 2014).

Ever since electricity and its qualities and possibilities were discovered the speed of technological progress in our world has been growing. The discovery of electricity became the necessary basis for the occurrence of multiple other sciences and inventions that are constantly used and are of crucial meaning in the contemporary world.

The modern society, its life and well being depends on electricity wholly. We cannot imagine our lives without cell phones, computers, the internet, coffee makers, toasters, washing machines, and microwave ovens, and all of these devices work due to electricity, but we often forget that more crucial needs of ours are fulfilled with the help of this discovery (Electricity, women and the home, n. d.).

For example, light in our cities, streets, and homes is electricity, water in our taps is running because of electrical pumps. The impact of electricity on the society of the world and its lifestyle is hard to overestimate. Today it is responsible for our survival.

At the beginning of the nineteenth century at least eighty percent of the population of our planet lived in rural areas and worked in agriculture, the appearance of electric engines created many workplaces in the cities and enforced the process of urbanization. In the modern world, the majority of people live in or close to urban areas.

This is how electricity changed our social geography. Besides, electricity has made an impact on the taste of our food, our education, our medicine and communication (Valdes, 2012). Electricity in hospitals helps to save millions of lives every day. The internet and cell phones have speeded up the world’s communication massively, changed the way people interact with each other. Electricity gave us new modes of transportation too – trams, trains, and trolleybuses function due to electric power.

Basically, the major electric generators are responsible for human life support. Besides, such huge inventions as nuclear power and space exploration are possible because of the discovery of electric power. Electricity and the knowledge of its current, its qualities and effects, its structure and capacities are the discoveries that influenced our world, changed it, shaped it into what we know today. Every human-made object we can touch or see today was made with the help of electricity one way or another.

Our culture and art also depend on electricity a lot, for example, some of the most ancient paintings and manuscripts are preserved with the help of refrigerators working from electricity. The modern mass media such as radio and television exist because of electricity. The music is written, played and delivered to the audiences today with the help of electricity.

Finally, neurosurgery works through the understanding of electric impulses human brain sends to the body making it function. Electricity constantly penetrates humans, this world, and every aspect of life; this is why its discovery can be considered the most influential and important invention.

All About Electricity

Electricity is the best gift of science to mankind. This is the age of electricity. Electricity is a source of light, heat, and other comforts. Right from house lighting to the running of giant factories to streets and parks, it is the invisible current that makes these entities run. Electricity supplies all types of energy to man in order to improve his scientific inventions and increase his social amenities.  Heating and cooling processes are also executed by it. All you need to do is just switch on a button and there you have ample power.

Electricity is primarily produced from coal and water. It is also produced from other sources like nuclear energy, solar energy, etc. but still, production is very less. Efforts are being made to produce more electricity from solar, wind, and nuclear sources so that the natural sources can be conserved.

Introduction:

Electricity is one of the most important sources in the life of a human. Especially now that we have entered the 21 st century, there is hardly anything that does not work on electricity. However, due to the huge demand for electricity worldwide, it has become hard to produce electricity and provide it to everyone. However, if proper steps and measures are taken to Save Electricity then it is possible that both mankind that is to come and the mankind currently existing can use them. Here is a guide on how you can write the Save Electricity Essay via Vedantu and express all your views on the same. This essay writing helps not only kids from high classes but also those students present in the lower grades.

Need for Electricity

The modern world without electricity is impossible now and it is needed in every sphere of life. Electricity facilitates technological advancement and supports a wide range of products and services that enhance our quality of life and stimulate economic productivity. Thus, demand for power is directly correlated with population and economic growth.

Houses, streets, parks, offices, shops, malls, etc. are lighted with electricity. Modern communications and transport are rendered safer, speedier, and more comfortable by the introduction of mobile phones, the Internet, the electric train, tram, and motor.

The introduction of electrical devices has simplified labor in every form in the house, in the office, and in the factory. Among domestic services, equipment of every type is functioned more cheaply and efficiently by electricity. Many labor-saving and time-saving devices using electrical energy have been introduced, to minimize drudgery at home and office.

Radio, television, cooler, heater, washing machine, air conditioners, all depend on electricity. There is no grandeur in festivals and celebrations without electricity.

Electricity has brought a great revolution in the field of medical science. It plays an important role in the treatment of diseases by electrotherapy.

Electricity has changed the way of farming. In fact, it has mechanized farming. It has helped us to distribute the water of the rivers into canals and irrigate dry and barren lands. Without electricity, we cannot imagine industrial growth. All types of industries require electricity to function.

How to Save Electricity?

Electricity generation depends largely on non-replaceable resources. Thermal power needs coal and other fossil fuel for generating electricity. This fuel has limited reserves and it will take millions of years to replenish these reserves.

There are many different ways in which we can save electricity and thus conserve energy. At home, elementary actions should be taken such as unplugging computers, turning off televisions in order to reduce our consumption of electricity, thereby conserving energy. You can install thermostat technology at your home and connect the different appliances and gadgets that draw power from all those outlets that are not even in use. Solar panels can be planted to reduce the consumption of electricity.

Furthermore, we can use more natural light. In the daytime instead of switching on lights and fans, we can keep our windows open to get natural light and air.

We can increase our outdoor activities more like playing, gardening, reading, etc. so that TV time can be reduced. We can switch our office work and other related tasks to laptops from desktops because laptops consume less energy than desktops.

Electricity is one of the biggest gifts that science has given to us. It is mostly produced by burning fossil fuels and fossil fuels are non-renewable. This means that once we use up all the fossil fuels present on this planet, we will have to solely depend on solar, wind and hydropower to generate electricity.

Although these resources do help, the use of renewable energy is not widespread and thus, a large part of the world may end up having to live without electricity. That’s why we must save electricity. We must be mindful of our usage of electricity. We must turn off light bulbs and fans when they aren’t in use. Saving electricity is the need of the day.

Today, it is very difficult to imagine a life without electricity. Be it light bulbs or fans, heaters or air-conditioners, mixer-grinders or ovens, everything runs on electricity. Even our mobile phones and computers wouldn’t be able to function without electricity. And that is why it is very important for us to save electricity.

Electricity is generated around the world mostly using fossil fuels like coal. Fossil fuels are non-renewable resources. This means that once we use up all the fossil fuels present on this planet, we will have to solely depend on solar, wind and hydropower to generate electricity. These days, many parts of the world use these renewable resources to generate a portion of the total electricity needed. But since producing electricity using such methods is neither very well-developed nor widespread, it is possible that if we empty the reserves of fossil fuels, a large part of this world will be left without electricity.

We must conserve electricity to ensure that our future is bright. We must be mindful of our usage of electricity. We must always remember to turn off light bulbs, fans and other electrical appliances when they are not in use. Instead of watching television all day long, we should encourage each other to go out and play in nature. Only by reducing our usage of electricity will we be able to save it.

Over the last 200 years, science has bestowed countless gifts upon humanity. Out of all these gifts, the one that has proved to be the most important is electricity. Today, it is very difficult to imagine a life without electricity. Be it light bulbs or fans, heaters or air-conditioners, mixer-grinders or ovens, everything runs on electricity.

Even our mobile phones and computers wouldn’t be able to function without electricity. We have now become dependent on electrical appliances for the smallest of things like hair drying, heating food and washing our socks. That is why it is very important for us to save electricity.

In most nations across the world, electricity is produced using fossil fuels such as coal. Fossil fuels are non-renewable resources. This means that we can not go on and on and expect that we will always have electricity. Once we use up all the fossil fuels present on this planet, we will have to solely depend on renewable resources such as solar, wind and water to generate electricity. These days, some parts of the world use these renewable resources to generate a portion of the total electricity needed. But producing electricity using such methods is neither very well-developed nor widespread.

It is not only possible but also probable that if we empty the reserves of fossil fuels, a large part of this world will be left without electricity. Therefore, we must conserve electricity to ensure that our future is bright. We must be mindful of our usage of electricity. We must always remember to turn off light bulbs, fans and other electrical appliances when they are not in use. It is actually quite easy to save electricity. We can wash clothes by hand instead of turning the washing machine on for every single piece of garment.

We can also use natural light instead of depending on electric lamps during the day. Instead of watching television all day long, we should encourage each other to go out and enjoy nature. We should encourage kids to play with each other rather than watching TV all day long or playing video games on their computers. This would not only save electricity but also help kids live an active and healthy life.

We should launch campaigns to spread awareness amongst people about the importance of saving electricity. We should also push the government to adopt renewable ways of electricity generation and encourage people to install solar panels on the top of their houses. This would make us less dependent on fossil fuels for electricity. Electricity is a precious resource for us that’s why we must focus on saving electricity.

We should conserve energy. We require electricity at all times and for a variety of social purposes. Electricity is seen as the heart of existence, without which the entire world remains black at night in the current world. Our healthcare, teaching, farming, technology, and other specialised activities depend on electricity. The expert in the activity theatre, the engineer in the industry, the engine technician in the garage, the officer at the workplace, and the passengers at the train station, all benefit from the administration provided by electricity. Indeed, even our minor efforts to conserve electricity will be beneficial. We should be careful about the electric devices we use at home. Fans, lighting, air conditioning systems, coolers, and water heaters must be used properly. TVs should not be turned on when nobody is watching them. We should use sunlight wherever we can as it will help conserve energy. We should all make an effort to preserve electricity.

Electricity saved is electricity generated. This essay for class 3 on saving electricity will help your child organise their thoughts:

Electricity is one of the most important resources for any lifestyle. Our daily lives are powered by electricity. It is difficult to picture living without electricity now. Thus, preserving electricity is critical for human survival.

Uses of Electricity

We use electricity in nearly every aspect of our lives; we require it to live a pleasant life full of comforts and services. Without power, the world will become dormant. Electricity, for example, powers all medical and educational institutions. If there is no power, a surgeon cannot execute the necessary surgeries, and students cannot obtain practical experience, for which the internet is crucial. Similarly, workers in workshops and engineers in plants rely on electricity to perform properly. Passengers on the railway and airport may also travel securely because there is electricity around.

Why Is It Important to Save Electricity?

Electricity sources are likely to run out. Energy, it is true, cannot be generated or destroyed. However, the energy sources from which it is derived are expected to diminish. For example, coal, which significantly contributes to the creation of power, is rapidly decreasing. This necessitates energy conservation. Saving electricity aids in the conservation of natural resources, allowing for economic savings.

Ways To Save Electricity

There is no industrial sector or other areas in today’s world where electricity is not utilised. People must realise that even little steps may go a long way toward saving power.

  • We should use natural light more often and turn off the lights in the morning and afternoon when it is not needed.
  • We should make every effort to make our own homes more energy efficient.
  • Remember to disconnect your electrical appliances when they are not in use since even when they are inactive, they consume 10% of the power. Unplug them to conserve electricity.
  • All outdated appliances that use a lot of power should be replaced.
  • One of the most effective strategies to save power is to use renewable energy sources such as solar and wind energy.

Your child will learn to think about different aspects of electricity. It will develop their observation and thought process toward electricity. They will also learn about the importance of saving electricity.

Introduction (Save Electricity Essay)

Electricity is one of the essential resources for a thriving life next to water. Electricity is used to run our daily life. Today it will be impossible to imagine life without electricity. So, saving electricity is an important thing for human life,

The Electricity is generated by using coal and natural gas, which is extracted by the mining of earth. Both resources are finite, and deposits are available for a certain amount in the earth.

The main issue is the ever-growing population of humankind, and the demand for electricity is extremely high. But since the resources are finite, the demand far outstrips supply.

Scientists also believe that if we use the resources unchecked, we will consume so much that we will soon run out of it. In simpler, we must preserve electricity so that we can preserve the resources.

Saving electricity is becoming a bigger and bigger because of the astonishing energy bills caused by rapid changes in the lifestyles. People are striving to make their homes comfortable by installing heavy equipment required for comfort and entertainment, which uses an enormous quantity of energy. Electricity serves mankind greatly, but we must stop waste the age of power.

If there is no electricity world will lose light. Still, the careless behavior of humankind must be checked as humans need to realize the importance of electricity to save ourselves from the darkness.

Each day we save electricity, it translates into more savings of money in your bank account. Also, lower energy consumption means lower electricity consumption, which is good for health and environment since lesser greenhouse gasses are emitted into the atmosphere.

Importance and Uses of Electricity

In almost every sphere of life, we need electricity; we need it to lead a comfortable life full of amenities and services. The planet will become inactive without electricity. For instance, all health and education facilities are conditioned by electricity.

If there is no electricity, a surgeon cannot perform the required operations; even the students won’t be able to gain practical knowledge .

Similarly, mechanics in garages and engineers in factories depend upon the electricity for their smooth functioning. Also, the passengers of the railway and airport can travel safely due to the presence of electricity only.

Many modes of transportation depend on electricity like the trams, trains and metros, which carry thousands of people every day. All this is possible due to electricity. Electricity is one of the essential modes to boost modern life and to ensure it to be civilized.

How to Save Electricity?

In today’s world, there is no single industrial sector or other areas where electricity is not used. Each building or apartment operates many lighting fixtures and household appliances. People should first understand that even a slight step will go a very long way in saving electricity.

For example, if people switch off the home fan when they are not in use, they will save many watts of electricity. Similarly, if we use other electrical equipment like heaters, air conditioners, ovens, refrigerators, etc. we can save an enormous amount of electricity.

We should use natural light more and do not keep the lights on during the morning and afternoon, as natural lights should be enough. We should replace all the old appliances which consume more electricity.

We should strive to make our own homes more energy efficient. Remember to unplug your electrical gadget when they are not in use, because even if the device is inactive, they consume ten percent of electricity, therefore unplug them to save electricity.

Also, try to cut down your TV watching time by encouraging your kids to read and play. Instead of desktop, try using laptops, a desktop consumes more electricity compared to a laptop. You should also switch off the fan if you are using an air conditioner, avoiding needless waste age of energy.

Using renewable energy resources like solar and wind energy is one of the best ways to conserve electricity. Installing the solar panels at your home can excessively save energy and economic saving. It is an economical option. The solar panels help to consume in lesser energy.

Short Essay on Save Water and Electricity – Essay 1 (350 words)

Introduction

Without water there is no life. Even desert dwelling fauna and flora need some measure of water to survive and thrive. Yet, most of us don’t think twice about leaving water running from a tap or polluting the rapidly diminishing sources of fresh water. This ignorance and inaction has resulted in a growing crisis – the possibility that we will run out of drinkable water in the near future.

The situation is slightly different when it comes to electricity. Electricity is a modern discovery but in just over a century it has become a mainstay in our existence. We use electricity for pretty much everything – from lighting up our homes to running machinery and even helping us come up with new technological innovations. However, the sources that provide us energy are non-renewable resources such as natural gas and coal. Sooner or later, we are going to run out of them.

Why we should Save Water and Electricity

There are plenty of reasons to save both water and electricity and some of them are very similar. First of all, from the individual’s point of view, saving these two resources means saving money. It’s simple – when you save water, your water bill isn’t high and the same principle works for electricity.

Second, conserving both is good for the environment. Less use of energy means that fewer fossil fuels are burnt and less pollution from that burning is released into the atmosphere. Conserving water ensures that we don’t deplete our sources of fresh water; more importantly, we don’t pollute water with pesticides and harmful chemicals that leave fresh water undrinkable and harm ecosystems that rely on that water.

Third, while electricity is generated using natural resources, water is a natural resource. Conserving both leads to conservation of resources that we are rapidly running out of and that are non-renewable.

Both water and electricity are essential to our lives. Without water, there will be no life. Without electricity, most of our daily necessities and needs will be unattainable. However, the stress on both these resources and the amounts that are being used need to reduce or soon there won’t be enough water or electricity to go around.

Essay on Importance of Saving Water and Electricity – Essay 2 (400 words)

There are two resources that are essential to a thriving life – water, which is required to keep you alive and healthy and electricity which runs so much of our daily life that we would be quite lost without it. Both these resources occur in nature in a way. Water is directly found in water bodies, ice fields and glaciers. Electricity is generated using coal or natural gas, both of which can be extracted from the earth by mining.

Importance of Water and Electricity Conservation

Although both resources occur more or less naturally, both are finite. Only around 3.5 percent of all the water on the planet is fresh water and only one percent is accessible to us. Similarly, coal and natural gas deposits have only a certain amount of these resources. The major problem here is that the world’s population is increasing by leaps and bounds and the demand for both these resources is extremely high.

Since these resources are finite, the demand far outstrips the supply. It is even believed by many scientists and geologists that unchecked, we will consume so much of both that we will soon run out. The consequences of this are quite frightening. Without electricity, our modern way of life will collapse since so much of it depends on energy. Without water, we ourselves won’t survive very long.

Another point here is that we are polluting the water bodies that supply us and damaging the environment, through water pollution and through the mining practices we use to extract coal and natural gas. This means that not only are additional sources of fresh water unsafe for human consumption but also the environment is under attack. Under this kind of abuse, our environment will soon not be able to sustain us.

It becomes obvious then that these resources need to be used judiciously, if we are to have any hope of making them last. We need to realize the problem of shortage before it occurs and do whatever we can to save electricity and water. In addition, we need to spread awareness so that more and more people take steps towards conservation.

In the end, it is up to us to use measures that will ensure availability of water and electricity for a longer time. If charity begins at home, so does conservation. We need to take small, simple and consistent steps to see to it that these precious resources aren’t wasted.

Essay on Urging Students to Save Electricity and Water – Essay 3 (450 Words)

Water and electricity are considered basic resources to live in modern times. Water is the most important because without it there literally would be no life. Electricity also holds a place of grave importance because most of modern existence is powered by it. However, there are only so many sources of fresh water in the world. Similarly, there is only a limited amount of fossil fuels that can be used to generate electricity. These two resources are essentially finite. Our population, on the other hand, keeps growing every day. As this happens, the demands for these two resources increases but their sources become scarce.

Unfortunately, we are so used to having an abundance of both that we have grown careless. Every day in many ways we waste huge amounts of these resources without thinking twice. For many of us it is habit that we have cultivated from childhood. Ensuring that the next generation does not follow the same wasteful habits is now a priority.

Teaching Students about Water and Electricity Conservation

We need to ensure that the urgency of dwindling natural resources, the reality of environmental damage and the immediate need for conservation is something that new generations understand very well. The best way to do so is by educating students. Students need to be aware of this because they are the agents of change. They are the ones who gain the latest knowledge and they are the ones idealistic enough to utilize it for everyone’s betterment. For this reason, environmental sciences need to be taught in every grade.

Students are learning as they grow up that these resources are essential to our existence. They’re also learning that the same resources are finite. Students more open to new ideas and thoughts. Therefore, when shown the impact of the lack of resources and conservation of those same resources, students are much more likely to follow steps for conservation. They are also more likely to involve their families and communities in the effort to conserve these two resources. Most importantly, though, students have inventive minds and are most likely to come up with ideas that can help us use less or conserve more of water and electricity.

If we want generations to grow up with conservation as one of their values, it is very important that we teach them this value right from the beginning. The earlier we do so, the more well embedded these values will be. In our efforts to conserve electricity and water students must be the forerunners. Only then will we see effective change.

Essay on Conservation of Water and Electricity – Essay 4 (600 words)

Water and electricity are two resources we absolutely need – water because it is essential to life and electricity because the modern world would not be possible without it. Unfortunately, these resources are finite; there is only so much fresh water in the world and electricity is generated from fossil fuels which are a dwindling natural resource. What makes matters worse is that the global population increases day by day making the demand for these resources higher. In order to ensure that future generations have enough of both resources, we need to conserve them.

Conservation of Water

There is no denying the fact that we need water to survive. Some studies have speculated that the human body can go only three days without water. This isn’t surprising since sixty percent of our body is made up of water. However, this is also the resource that gets wasted the most. We leave taps running, don’t pay attention to leaks and pollute the sources of fresh water we so desperately need. It is becoming imperative that we take steps to reverse this or we will soon lose this resource completely.

There are certain steps all of us can take on an individual level to help conserve water. Some of them are:

  • When you shave or brush your teeth in the morning, don’t leave the water running. By turning of the tap you can save around nineteen litres of water a day.
  • You can buy water conserving adapters and have them fitted to your taps. They will halve the flow of water from the taps.
  • Fill up the sink to the halfway mark with water when you wash the dishes, instead of using running water. You can save around thirty litres every fifteen minutes this way.
  • Make sure that all leaks are repaired properly. Thirty litres of water a day is lost through leaks.
  • Shower instead of taking a bath in the bathtub. The difference between the latter and the former is one hundred and ten litres.

Conservation of Electricity

Electricity plays such a major role in our lives that we feel the pinch the moment power gets cut. Pretty much every appliance we use in the house is dependent on electricity. However, when we leave these things connected and running even though we are not using them, we end up wasting huge amounts of electricity.

Some steps we can take to conserve electricity are:

  • Switch off lights and fans when we leave a room.
  • Use energy-efficient bulbs rather than the regular ones. They are brighter and use much less electricity.
  • When not using an appliance such as a washing machine or television, switch them off from where they’re connected into the socket.
  • When not charging electronic devices, make sure to turn off the chargers or disconnect them.
  • In summer, find times when you can open up the windows for air circulation and cooling instead of switching on the air conditioner.

There are many small ways in which we can conserve electricity and water. When we take these steps not only will they reduce the amount of water or energy you need to use but also lower the bills you have to pay for them. Making these steps a habit will serve everyone better in the long run.

Essay on Saving Water and Electricity: Small Changes, Big Rewards – Essay 5 (800 words)

Water is an absolutely essential resource for us. This is not surprising considering the fact that more than sixty percent of our bodies are made up of water. In fact, water is more than a mere resource; it is life. Without water, there would be no life on this planet. Even today, if we are deprived of water, we would die out very quickly.

Electricity doesn’t hold the same importance as water in the overall scheme of things; we would certainly not die without it. It is an invention of the modern era, however, and everything we use in these times is powered by electricity. Without electricity our entire way of life will be set back by at least five hundred years.

Saving Water and Electricity

Considering how important the two resources are – one to our survival and one to our way of life – there can be no doubt about the fact that everyone needs these resources. The problem is that since the population of the earth is growing every day, the demand for these resources is also increasing. However, these resources are not infinite.

Indeed, even though water covers seventy percent of the planet, only around two point five percent is fresh water and one point five percent of that is trapped in ice fields and glaciers. We only have access to the remaining one percent which can be found in lakes, ponds and rivers and in underground pockets. It is this groundwater that we usually tap into. Unfortunately, the levels of water under the earth are either diminishing because of the enormous demand or are contaminated due to chemicals that seep into the ground. In short, we are running out of water.

Electricity is mostly generated using fossil fuels such as natural gas and coal. These are naturally occurring substances generally found in the earth or refined from crude deposits. Since modern life runs on electricity supplies, the demand for it is high and increasing every day. The increasing population requires more electricity to be generated but the resources that generate this electricity are finite. To put it simply we are running out of coal and petroleum which yields natural gas.

This is why it is imperative that we save these resources. If we do not take steps now, soon we may no longer have them at our disposal.

Tips to Conserve Water and Electricity

In light of this looming crisis, it becomes every individual’s responsibility to conserve these resources. Fortunately, there are quite a few small steps we can take to save water and electricity. These small steps can have a huge impact if the majority of people follow them. There are some simple hacks that we can utilize to conserve both.

  • When washing clothes in a washing machine, ensure that you have put in a full load of clothes so that you don’t need to run it multiple times. This saves both water and electricity.
  • Instead of using the dryer function, hang your clothes out to dry. This simple step can save you a lot of electricity.
  • Use bio-friendly soap while washing clothes to ensure that the run-off doesn’t pollute sources of fresh water.
  • When leaving a room, ensure that electrical appliances are not running needlessly. Switch them off.
  • When going to take a shower, collect the cold water that first comes out in a bucket. You can put this water in jugs for use around the house.
  • Unplug any chargers that are not charging a device.
  • In summers, if the heat allows it, turn off the air conditioner and instead open up some windows. This ensures circulation of air, keeping your home cool. At the same time, it lessens the use of electricity and keeps your power bills lower.
  • Switch from regular bulbs to fluorescent bulbs. They use a fraction of the electricity that a normal bulb uses and are brighter.
  • Instead of washing dishes under running tap water, fill the sink halfway and wash dishes in that water.
  • Don’t leave the tap running while brushing your teeth or performing any other ablutions.
  • Locate any leaks in the plumbing and have them repaired immediately. You can save close to thirty litres of water this way.

These are some of the tips that you can utilize every day in your home and even at work to conserve water and electricity. In doing so, not only will these resources last longer, but also reduce the carbon footprint of your home or work. In all ways, this is a win-win scenario for you and for the environment.

Essay on Renewable Energy

Energy obtained from renewable resources (natural resources) is termed as renewable energy.

Today, electricity is everything to us. We can’t imagine a day without it. The addiction to technology makes it almost impossible to live without electricity. We need electricity to carry out our daily activities. But where does electricity come from? Electricity is generated from different sources. One of them is a renewable resource that produces renewable energy. Let’s have a look at this.

Short and Long Renewable Energy Essay in English

Here, I’m providing short and long essays on Renewable Energy. This topic is useful for students of classes 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 and class 12. However, this topic is also important for everyone to know the importance of renewable energy.

Renewable Energy Essay 10 Lines (100 – 150 Words)

1) Renewable energy is produced from natural sources.

2) Renewable energy is unlimited on the earth.

3) It is a more clean and green form of energy.

4) Energy produced from the sun, wind, water, biomass, etc is considered renewable energy.

5) Generating renewable energy is expensive.

6) This energy can be produced only at a suitable location.

7) Renewable energy is more reliable than other forms of energy.

8) It causes very low or nearly no harm to the environment.

9) Renewable energy will help in saving the limited natural resources.

10) Depending on renewable energy is good for our future.

Short Essay on Renewable Energy (200 – 250 Words)

Renewable energy is produced from the resources that are available in nature. Energy can be easily produced from renewable resources that are available free of cost. We can use renewable energy without the fear of its running out. This energy is also called as ‘green energy’ and ‘clean energy’.

Some renewable energy is solar energy, hydro energy, wind energy, geothermal energy, and biomass energy. Today we are mostly dependent on non-renewable resources like coal, petroleum, etc that will end one day. Also, they are harmful to the environment. Hence, renewable energy is a good alternative for today as well as for tomorrow.

As the name suggests, renewable energy can be easily regenerated. Renewable energy does not produce harmful gases and is hence considered safe for the environment. On seeing the current condition of the environment, renewable energy is the need of an hour.

However, renewable energy does have a black side. Generally, price is the superior reason that restricts the usage of clean energy in the world. It also requires higher maintenance and installation price. Another disadvantage is the location-centric. Not every type of renewable energy is produced everywhere. A particular atmosphere is required to produce renewable energy.

On noticing the consequences of non-renewable energy, indeed, the future can only be safe if we use renewable energy.

Long Essay on Renewable Energy (500 – 600 Words)

Introduction

Electricity is a secondary form of energy. It is produced from different sources of energy. Energy can be renewable or non-renewable. Renewable energy can be renewed or re-generated easily but the non-renewable resources are limited on the earth. They can’t be generated again. Therefore, renewable energy is much better than non-renewable energy.

Sources of Renewable Energy

There are five major sources responsible for generating renewable energy. They are:

  • Solar energy: Sun is the major source of renewable energy that is termed as solar energy.  The light and heat of the sun are used to produce energy. Solar cookers, solar panels, or solar cells are used to utilize solar energy. Scientists are also preparing to launch solar-powered cars.
  • Wind energy: Wind is also used to produce energy. Windmills run using turbines and generators are constructed to generate wind energy. Wind energy is a good contributor to global energy demand.
  • Biomass energy: Wastes from plants and animals are used to produce energy, which we call biomass energy. Biomass is an eco-friendly method of energy production. Different methods are used to produce biomass energy from biofuels.
  • Geothermal energy: Geothermal energy is produced from the heat below the earth’s surface. This energy can be used to produce electricity, heat buildings, bathing, etc.
  • Hydropower energy: The force of water is used to produce energy and is referred to as hydropower energy. Hydropower is more reliable than other renewable sources. The construction of reservoirs, canals, dams, etc helps to control the flow of water which is later, used to run turbines to produce electricity.

Advantages of Renewable Energy

The primary advantage of renewable energy is that it can be renewed easily. It is the only option that will meet the energy requirement of today as well as tomorrow. Unlike fossil fuels that are limited on the earth, we can use renewable energy for a lifetime. Renewable energy is good for both humans and the environment. Non-renewable energy like fossil fuels causes pollution and environmental hazards like acid rain, global warming, etc. The amount of carbon emissions from renewable energy is much low than those of non-renewable energy.

Therefore, depending on renewable energy will save us from this serious issue. Renewable energy is the most reliable form of energy and we can also say that it is the future of the world’s energy needs.

Disadvantages of Renewable Energy

We all know the importance and benefits of renewable energy but there are some limitations to its usage. The main disadvantage is the cost. The cost of generating energy from renewable resources is very high when compared to that of non-renewable sources. People find burning coal cheaper and easier than installing a solar panel.

Most of the renewable resources depend on natural sources that can be obtained in a particular location. For example, solar energy cannot be fruitful for cold locations or geothermal energy can only be obtained in a location where fast-flowing water resources are available. This limits the use of renewable resources to a great extent. However, they cannot be considered fully safe for living things and the environment. The hydroelectricity project has an adverse effect on aquatic life and the ecosystem.

The increasing population demands an increase in energy consumption. Energy is necessary for home, business, and almost every work. Thanks to innovation and invention that helps in utilizing renewable resources and maintaining a sustainable level of energy in the world.

I hope the above provided essay on renewable energy is easy to understand. We should use energy efficiently to live a healthy and peaceful life.

Contested & Erased Energy Knowledges

A Trans-Disciplinary Conference

31 Oct – 2 Nov 2024

University of Dundee & University of Edinburgh

Edinburgh, Scotland

Today, ‘energy’ is most often associated with the global North’s – and increasingly the global South’s – vital dependence on the combustion of fossil fuels needed for heating, transportation and food production. All are threatened – as we know all too well by now – by anthropogenic climate change. Although there is no shortage of ‘green’ energy innovations, many cause more problems than they solve, as the example of wind farms in Oaxaca, which caused aridification while reinstating colonial relationships, shows (Dunlap 2018). One reason for this is the sheer volume of energy extraction. The other is the conceptual framework that underpins this activity: this is a source-conversion-end-use concept of energy that is embedded in the Greco-monotheistic-scientific tradition. This conception views the world as composed of individual phenomena, separates animate from inanimate existents, privileges solids (substance) over liquids, and privileges teleological developmental trajectories over complexity (Irigaray 2010; Stengers 2018).

Despite the fact that an unbroken line of inquiry can be traced from Aristotle to Einstein, taking in, for instance, Aristotle’s notion energy as energeia (the ability to do work and set things in motion), entelecheia (the power of a completed action, or the state of ‘being-at-an-end’), and invariance amidst change, the passage from pondering the functioning of pulleys to the discovery of mass-energy equivalence in the 20th century wedded energy irrevocably to technology. Potentiality, which, alongside flux, is one of energy’s main ‘aggregate states’ so to speak, was here reduced to entelecheic end-use. This gave rise to a ‘standing-reserve’ view of energy where the actual is ‘enframed’ within the usable: a forest is a wood-producing resource; a beach an ‘object on call for inspection by a group of tourists ordered there by the vacation industry’ (Heidegger 1977).

If Heidegger’s notion of enframing seems dated, a quick glance at algorithmic platforms of companies such as Amazon shows gig labourers as a standing-reserve, on permanent call (Srnicek 2017). Likewise, synthetic biology, which designs biological entities, shows future entities to be a standing-reserve of function (Schyfter 2021). This ‘use orientation’ has been contested; however it has not been contested by many. Bataille, and to a lesser degree Libbrecht attempted a culturally informed theorisation of energy. Bataille’s argument that energy is not instrumental to satisfying society’s needs but that, on the contrary, the institution of society, with all its forms of production, is the expression of the excess of energy, was based on his study of pre-colonisation Mesoamerican cultures (Bataille 1949). Although Bataille’s theory cannot be applied to the current exhaustion of all energies – natural, cultural, and mental – it shows two things. First, that neither ruthless fossil fuel extraction nor a return to an imaginary pre-industrial frugality is possible; and second, that energy stewardship is inseparable from culture.

Libbrecht’s comparison of the Greek, Indian and Chinese concepts of energy, clarified the difference between the Greco-scientific cause-and-effect logic and culturally different views, such as the Chinese, where qì permeates everything (Libbrecht 2005). However, it didn’t do much more. The relation between zìrán or nature, understood as ‘thus-ness’ rather than greenery and qì has remained underexplored (Yao and Zhao 2010). Similarly, Native Science, where energy is a field-force (Little Bear 2012), has been underexplored. In the past two decades, Energy Humanities has produced new epistemologies by theorising ‘scapes’ that direct ‘ontologically flattened mobilities’ through shared flows of matter-energy (Urry 2010). Acknowledging that matter is not inert but vibrant (Bennett 2010), and that, as many quantum experiments have shown, individual things with their own set of determinate properties, do not exist (Barad 2013), EH has argued for the necessity of thinking in terms of intra-action to destabilise the inherited notion of causality (Barad 2010); understanding that environments as trans-corporeal (Alaimo 2017; (Braidotti 2019); and that social events are material-energetic (Latour 2018).

Building on this work, this transdisciplinary conference explores philosophical, scientific, historical, artistic and cultural accounts of contested, suppressed or erased energy knowledges: principles, practices and inventions. We are particularly interested in proposals for standalone papers, panels, artistic and experimental interventions or posters that address one or more of the following relations:

Entanglement , the phenomenon that occurs when existents share micro or macro proximity in such a way that they can’t be described independently

Superposition , the co-existence of multiple, discontinuous spatialities and temporalities

Distributed Agency , the agency that forms and transforms within the action and includes human and nonhuman (organic or machinic) actants.

Broadly speaking, this tripartite focus aims to address the following questions :

1. How are manifest and subtle energies nested in practices of dwelling, building, making, marking, and transforming? How do they relate to the flux of climatic events, plant lives, animal and human migrations, and the nested energies of built structures? How do they create and sustain energy fields?

2. How do emergent energetic directionalities and/or networks structure human and nonhuman trajectories, behaviour, and affordances?

3. How do particular, explicit or tacit, cogitational or practical (knowing that /knowing how), knowledges chart potentialities?

4. How can the contested, suppressed, minoritised or erased energy principles, practices and technologies be engaged without simply being ‘captured’ and ‘instrumentalised’ by the – increasingly desperate – global North energy narrative?

Keynote speakers: Karen Barad, Lee Bul, Winona LaDuke, Michael Marder (TBC)

Possible topics include but are not limited to :

  • Past, present and futurological philosophical, scientific and technological accounts of kinetic and potential energies (radiant, thermal, motion and sound, and chemical, stored mechanical or gravitational)
  • Abandoned energy-transforming technologies (e.g. Lukyanov’s water computer)
  • Pre-electricity ‘energy’ networks (e.g. hydraulic power networks)
  • Energetics – the theory that ‘lost out’ to mechanics at the beginning of the 20th century (Helm; Ostwald)
  • Vitalist accounts of cross-species energies (e.g. Bergson)
  • Organic and machinic theories of self-organising complexity (e.g. Varela, Wolfram)
  • Culturally minoritised holistic narratives that include physical and virtual energies (e.g. those of the Chumash, Haudenosaunee, Māori, Warlpiri, and Yoruba, among many other Indigenous cultures)
  • Artistic explorations of manifest and non-manifest energies (e.g. those of Beuys, the Gutai Group, Poga č nik, Bul, Guðjónsson or Sutela, among others )
  • Past and present energetically sensitive architecture and design (e.g. Arata’s)
  • Medieval Christian monasteries or Buddhist sanghas’ management of physical, chemical, and spiritual energies, human labour and tools
  • Chinese and Islamic medical theories of energy

Please send 400 w proposals for individual papers, artistic interventions or poster presentations of 15 min in length, accompanied by a 150 w bio and a concise list of AV requirements to [email protected] by 23:59 GMT on 1 July 2024. Climate Change Added a Month’s Worth of Extra-Hot Days in Past Year

Since last May, the average person experienced 26 more days of abnormal warmth than they would have without global warming, a new analysis found.

Over the past year of record-shattering warmth, the average person on Earth experienced 26 more days of abnormally high temperatures than they otherwise would have, were it not for human-induced climate change, scientists said Tuesday.

The past 12 months have been the planet’s hottest ever measured, and the burning of fossil fuels, which has added huge amounts of heat-trapping gases to the atmosphere, is a major reason. Nearly 80 percent of the world’s population experienced at least 31 days of atypical warmth since last May as a result of human-caused warming, the researchers’ analysis found.

Hypothetically, had we not heated the globe to its current state , the number of unusually warm days would have been far fewer, the scientists estimated, using mathematical modeling of the global climate.

The precise difference varies place to place. In some countries, it is just two or three weeks, the researchers found. In others, including Colombia, Indonesia and Rwanda, the difference is upward of 120 days.

“That’s a lot of toll that we’ve imposed on people,” said one of the researchers who conducted the new analysis, Andrew Pershing, the vice president for science at Climate Central, a nonprofit research and news organization based in Princeton, N.J., adding, “It’s a lot of toll that we’ve imposed on nature.” In parts of South America and Africa, he said, it amounts to “120 days that just wouldn’t be there without climate change.”

Currently, the world’s climate is shifting toward the La Niña phase of the cyclical pattern known as the El Niño-Southern Oscillation. This typically portends cooler temperatures on average. Even so, the recent heat could have reverberating effects on weather and storms in some places for months to come. Forecasters expect this year’s Atlantic hurricane season to be extraordinarily active, in part because the ocean waters where storms form have been off-the-charts warm.

The analysis issued Tuesday was a collaboration between several groups: Climate Central, the Red Cross Red Crescent Climate Centre and World Weather Attribution, a scientific initiative that examines extreme weather episodes. The report’s authors considered a given day’s temperature to be abnormally high in a particular location if it exceeded 90 percent of the daily temperatures recorded there between 1991 and 2020.

The average American experienced 39 days of such temperatures as a result of climate change since last May, the report found. That’s 19 more days than in a hypothetical world without human-caused warming. In some states, including Arizona and New Mexico in the Southwest and Washington and Oregon in the Northwest, the difference is 30 days or more, a full extra month.

The scientists also tallied up how many extreme heat waves the planet had experienced since last May. They defined these as episodes of unseasonable warmth across a large area, lasting three or more days, with significant loss of life or disruption to infrastructure and industry.

In total, the researchers identified 76 such episodes over the past year, affecting 90 countries, on every continent except Antarctica. There was the punishing hot spell in India last spring. There was the extreme heat that worsened wildfires and strained power grids in North America, Europe and East Asia last summer. And, already this year, there has been excessive warmth from Africa to the Middle East to Southeast Asia .
