Even though it never contained any software, users were in a position to write and run programs effectively using programming language. Two years later, the VisiCalc was introduced into the market and it was an upgrade to the apple 2 where spreadsheets were introduced into the computer.

Massive success of the company although began when they introduced Macintosh in the year 1984 which was the very first personal computer that was sold without any programming language. A lot of innovations where carried out throught the course of 1990s where the company was both characterized by both failures and success in their revenue. The company regained its shape between 2000-2014. In the year 2001, apple opened its very first retail store. By this time, the Macintosh products were greatly improved and several software were attached to it. However, despite the fact that this product had created a positive image as well as improved brand name of the company, it was the introduction of the digital hub strategy which was characterized with the introduction of iPod in the year 2001 which boomed the sales and the growth of the company (Naiman, 2019). This was followed by successive innovations which led to the introduction of iPhone, in the year 2007 and later iPad in the year 2010. During this period, the company experienced an increased profit margins compared to its competitors in the electronic markets.

Through the successive introduction of the iPad minis as well as the apple watches between 2012-2014 successively, it became clear that the company’s innovation rate was undisputable. Major exports as well as licencing became major features of the company’s expansion strategy as it aimed at acquiring a larger market across the world. Currently, the apple products are almost everywhere in all corners of the world. As a result of increasing technology, it is very obvious that a lot of breakthrough products will be developed by the company to ensure that they maintain their brands as well as tame the competition from other well established brands like Samsung and other well established brands in the market. for instance, the company has shown interest in inventing self-driving cars as well as the apple televisions which will complement the brand which are available in the market. with time, it is possible that the company will come up with unique products that will shake the world. Relatively, the company is well equipped with trained and qualified personnel both at the management level as well as the subordinate staff which will aid the innovation rate. The products of the company is also a subject of desire for most of the apple customers who are constantly willing to purchase the new products in the market. as a result, it is obvious that the company will try to invent new products so that they can effectively dominate the market and meet the endless needs of their customers across the globe.

Electronic industry faces a lot of competition from various industries which are in constant process of change and innovation with an aim of outweighing each other in the market to attain the market dominance. Different strategies are used by different companies to assert their presence in the market. to ensure that they compete effectively with the apple company, Samsung has opted to lower the prices of its products to attract more customers. It must be noted that the prices for Samsung products like the iPhone and the iPad are relatively lower compared to those of the apple and this to ensure that they are in touch with the competition caused by the apple products Haizar, et al., 2020). Relatively, the company has also invested heavily on research with an aim of aiding their innovation rates. They analyse the needs of their consumers in different markets to ascertain their preferences hence designing their products to meet these needs. Vigorous advertisements have also played a key role towards the success of Samsung company. In addition to the research on the needs of the customers, the company advertises its products using various platforms to ensure that they reach as many customers as possible and also to compete for market share just like the apple company

Apple Company

Introduction

Apple inc. came into being during the April 1, 1976; the company was incorporated during the January 3, 1977, as Apple Computer Inc. Apple Inc. is one of the key players in the computer and digital electronic industry. It is a multi-national corporation based in the United States; it focuses on the design of computer software, hardware and various brands of consumer electronics. Some of the most common products in the market produced by Apple Inc. include Macintosh computers, iPod, the iPhone and the iPad (Young 2005). Apple also various brands of computer software suites in its list of products. After thirty years of business, the company rebranded from Apple Computer Inc. to Apple Inc. to denote the diversification of its product ranges from computers to include diverse ranges of consumer electronic. Currently, Apple has at least 46000 full time employees and more than 2800 employee on the rest of the world. During the 2010 fiscal year, the company’s total sales amounted to approximately USD 65.23 Billion. Over the course of its business operations, Apple has managed to build a strong customer base on the consumer electronics industry; this is because of factors such as the company’s philosophy with regard to its distinguished advertising methods. Despite the company’s success in computer and digital electronics industry, there company has faced various criticisms concerning its business practices, contractors’ labor and the company’s commitment to environmental sustainability. This paper presents a critical analysis of Apple Inc. business environment, corporate and business level strategies (Young 2005). Apple Inc. stands out as one of the most successful companies that were formed during the 1970s. An important aspect of the company is that its corporate culture is based on the conventional approaches to what organizational culture should entail. Initially, Apple did not embrace competition as evident by their key competitor, the International Business Machine (IBM) at the time of its formation. The company’s strategy aimed at differentiating itself from its competitors. This differentiation saw the company refuse to develop products that matched the industry’s standard requirements, instead, the company developed products that were distinctively different from those in the market. This approach to differentiation was an effective strategy that resulted to the company’s initial success after its formation (Leavitt 2007). The incorporation of the company after its formation was a critical success factor for the company. Accompanied by diverse product launches, the company earned a name in the digital and computer industry. The company recorded a major breakthrough in the business world during their launch of VisiCalc Spreadsheet application program. VisiCalc spreadsheet increased Apple’s market share in IT compared to their key competitors IBM and Microsoft Corporation. By the end of the 70s, Apple had established itself in the computer industry (Leavitt 2007). Despite Apple initial success, their differentiation from standard industry platforms can be argued to the cause of the company’s problems during the 1980 and 1990s. A typical example of this is due to their development of their Apple II business machine that performed poorly in the business market. The onset of the 1980s implied that Apple Inc had to change its marketing strategies. During 1982, Apple launched the first personal computer but performed poorly due the high price of the computer (Deutschman 2000). The following product launches witnessed initial success but follow up sales were not effective. The short-lived success was due to Apple’s creativity that saw the company engage in multiple product launches. However, maintaining market strength was a major problem for Apple. This is significantly due to the high prices of their products and ineffective follow up strategies of the company. Apple’s innovation saw them pioneer the Desktop publishing market, which was one of the critical success factors for the company. This is due to its advanced graphics and ease in user capabilities compared to other products available in the market. Having realized the bottleneck in their sale due to high price tags, Apple adopted the development of low cost products, such as the development of the first Laser Printer, which was offered at reasonable prices (Colvin 2009). Internal infighting within the company is also one of the significant causation factors that hindered the success of the company in its early years of business. This was practically evident between the years 1981 and 1985, whereby Apple was concentrating on computer projects that would be released to the market at lower prices. Internal wrangles within the company resulted to corporate wars that almost jeopardized the project. This was evident between Apple Lisa’s corporate shirts and Steve Jobs faction called the pirates. The infighting was to determine which product between Macintosh and Apple Lisa would be shipped and released to the market first. The Company decision resulted to the release of Apple Lisa, but again, the marketing strategies were not effective enough due to the high price tags and in ineffective product development that resulted to limited software capabilities, which did not match the price that the computer was selling. During 1984, Apple launched the Macintosh, which is currently considered as playing a critical role in the company’s success during the years that followed. Just like past product launches, the initial Macintosh sale were high, but follow up sales strategies were not effective, resulting to short-lived success of the product. Power struggles were a characteristic of the company’s top management (Wozniak & Gina 2006). This was evident during 1985 due to the differences between Steve Jobs and the Chief Executive Officer. John Sculley. Steve Jobs focused on launching untested products that had high price tags, while the Board of Directors was thinking otherwise. This differences saw Steve Jobs attempt to overthrow Sculley from the executive position. This resulted to Job’s resignation and formation of a rival company, NeXT Inc. It can be said that internal rivalries within the company was one of the factors that hindered effective decision-making and ultimately the success of the company (Wozniak & Gina 2006). The period between 1986 and 1993 saw the company reinvent its products in terms of prices and product orientation especially after the Macintosh Portable performed poorly in the market due to the size of the computer. Apple redesigned the Macintosh Portable to PowerBook in order to eliminate the ergonomic issues associated with the previous designs of their products. The same year saw Apple upgrade the software capabilities of its Operating system to improve usability and user experience by adding color. This reinvention strategy was a milestone to the success of the company as it resulted to increased revenue for the company. It appeared as if Apple Inc. was at the peak of their productivity; since almost all their strategies were successful, coupled with product released that did well in the market resulting to increased profits and distribution of new products (Frank 2000). Concurrent product releases by Apple did not seem to be successful, especially after the company witnessed the success of the PowerBook, Macintosh LC and Centris. The drawback associated with concurrent releases in different configurations confused the consumers of Apple products. According to Apple, different product configurations implied that the company was segregating itself to other competing brands such as Sears and Wal-Mart. Product differentiation from other competing models was catastrophic for Apple because of the consumers could not differentiate the models. At the same time, Apple attempted to diversify their products to targeted consumers such as digital cameras, video consoles, speakers and other digital electronics appliances (Colvin 2009). The failure of this product diversification strategy can be attributed to unrealistic market predictions by the Chief Executive Officer, Sculley. This strategy had a significant effect Apples market share in the computer and digital electronics sector, especially after the company had established a strong customer base on computing devices. The adoption of ineffective marketing strategies by Apple was an advantage to Apple’s Chief competitor, Microsoft Corporation. Microsoft was focusing on the development of cheap and interactive computer software for personal computers, while Apple was focusing on the development of expensive and richly developed computer software. The strategic plan by Apple was to depend on high profit margins and not numerous product sales. This did not report a positive response to their products and as a result, the company’s profitability and stock prices continued to go down. Apple Inc. should have focused on customizing their products to meet the requirements of both high-end and low-end products rather than ignoring the potential of low-end consumers; an opportunity that Microsoft capitalized to become one of the most profitable companies in the computing industry, beating Apple despite its strong customer base and richly developed computing devices. In addition, Apple’s management witnessed a series of product flops and late deadlines that tainted the reputation of the company (Colvin 2009). After subsequent product failures and a reduction in the profitability of the company, Apple embarked on a reinvention strategy between 1994 and 1997. Apple strategy was to develop product alternatives to the Macintosh, since it was most successful product to be ever launched by Apple. The most significant drawback that the company failed to put into consideration during the development of its strategy was that the Macintosh was becoming outdated, considering the dynamic nature of the Information Technology. In addition, the company was under tight competition from new comers in the industry such as Sun Microsystems and OS/2, which were more developed to meet the computing requirements of the consumers compared to the Macintosh platform. This meant that Apple’s major product line was to undergo a significant overhaul and massive development in order to meet the current technological requirements (Colvin 2009). In order to upbeat the competition, Apple embarked on partnership with other players in the computing industry. This saw the company partner with IBM and Motorola, which was later called the AIM alliance. The goal was to revolutionize computing technologies that would use the hardware from the IBM and Motorola and software from Apple. The main agenda behind the partnership was to upbeat the intense competition from Microsoft. This strategy was effective, but Apple did not put into consideration the requirements of the low-end consumers, since the AIM alliance opted to develop more powerful and portable computers, which were more expensive; instead of developing powerful and cheap desktop computers that Microsoft was investing in heavily. Several attempts to reinvent the Macintosh failed, meaning Apple had to deploy effective organizational structures in order to regain the company’s profitability. This saw the company made experience organizational restructuring characterized with massive layoffs and top management reshuffles that saw the company purchase Steve Job’s NeXT inc. in order to reinstate Jobs as the company’s advisor. Later strategies that the company deployed were aimed at restructuring the company’s product lines. For instance, during 1997, Steve Jobs fostered a partnership with Microsoft in order for Microsoft to develop versions of Microsoft Office that were compatible with newer versions of Microsoft Office. Apple adopted new approaches to its manufacturing strategies such as the build-to-order strategy using the Apple Store (Colvin 2009). Apple’s return to success can be attributed to the new marketing and product development strategies that saw the company redesign its Macintosh to iMac, and later development of other consumer devices such as the iPod and the iPhone. The challenge was to maintain the newly acquired success of the company in order to avoid previous associated with ineffective follow-up strategies. Apple deployed effective marketing strategies that resulted to the iMac selling approximately 800 000 units during the initial five months of its launch. Apple strategy to maintain the regained market share was through various partnerships in order to establish a consumer oriented marketing platform. For instance, Apple Inc. bought Macromedia’s software used in video editing called Final Cut, expanding the Apple’s market into video editing market. Apple influence in the video editing sector increased in the following years following its release of the iMovie and Final Cut Pro, which is one of the most popular video editing software. One of the most effective strategies deployed by Apple was to focus on a particular domain of product line, as for the case of video editing applications. Product diversification and specification played a significant role in ensuring Apple’s re-entry into the computing and consumer electronic market. In addition, Apple Inc began to develop products that met all the needs of the high-end and low-end consumers. For instance, the MAC OS X combined all the requirements that professionals and ordinary consumers would need in a computer application (Colvin 2009). The period between 2005-2007 saw internet collaborate with Intel in order develop computers that were powered by Intel-based processors. This decision by Steve Jobs was a redesign of the company’s products in order to eliminate the differences in the industry standards. This period saw Apple success as reflected in the price of its stock and the surpassing of Apple’s market cap to that of Dell, which is also a major product line in the computing industry. Apple’s market share has significantly increased during this period, although it did not manage to upbeat Microsoft’s dominance in computing technology. Another successful strategy by the company was the recent developments in product diversification to shift attention away from the initial focus on computers. This resulted to the development of mobile devices and consumer electronics such as the iPhone and Apple TV. The post PC of Apple denoted the company’s profitability (Wozniak & Gina 2006). An overview of the history of Apple Inc. reveals that the down falls of the company is due to the ineffectiveness of the company’s corporate strategies. Corporate decisions and marketing strategies deployed by Apple were ineffective during their deployment. For example, the unrealistic market forecasts of 1992 that resulted to product flops, late deadline and a tainted corporate image that made Microsoft Corporation took advantage of that opportunity to increase its market share. The return of Steve Jobs can be argued to be the return of profitability to Apple Inc. Each of the executives at the company had different perspectives towards the success of the company. The onset of the 21st century coupled with the return of Steve Jobs to the company was the dawn of Apple’s success after a series of product launch failure and misappropriates corporate strategies. In addition, the company product diversification to invest in consumer electronics apart from computers was a critical success strategy for the company. In addition, the company embraces innovation by attracting one of the best minds in the computing technology industry (Frank 2000).

There are various ethical concerns regarding the Apple’s corporate decisions. Apple has been for a long time been criticized regarding its commitment to environmental sustainability due to their continued development of hardware components using components that cannot be recycled. In addition, there are toxins in the hardware of their iPhone. Apple’s environmental concern is due to the inclusion of chemical toxins in their products. These chemicals are somewhat dangerous to human life. The company requires implementing policies that aim to promote environmental sustainability through elimination of toxic elements in the design of their products. The realization of success by the company implies that the company has the corporate responsibility of ensuring environmental sustainability and putting into consideration the negative effects that the company’s products have on its consumers (Wozniak & Gina 2006). Despite the need to achieve high success levels, the company’s labor practices have been under criticism due to the working conditions of the company’s factories. The criticism of the company’s labor practices is due to the allegations concerning the company’s concern to the needs of their laborers. For instance, one of Apple’s plants that manufactures iPod and other consumer electronics houses about 200000 workers in the same facility, yet some of the workers are reported to earn approximately $ 100 per month. In addition, the company policies require that the workers should live on the company premises, yet they pay rent to the company. Violations of worker’s rights is a common protocol in most the plants owned by Apple (Colvin 2009).

It is widely evident that the various phases of Apple’s growth depend on the corporate strategies and the corporate management. Corporate strategies are an effective approach to fostering success corporations. This is widely evident by the departure and the return of Steve Jobs to Apple Inc. The period that Steve Jobs was absent in the company resulted to lot problems in the company as evident by unrealistic market predictions, product launch failures and missed opportunities that resulted to a tainted corporate image. This translated to negative financial impacts to the organization that saw the stock prices reduce.

Apple Essay – Essay 2

Apple is best of all fruits as it is the king of all fruits. It’s juicy and sweet  taste make it worth savoring. Can you think why it is called the king of all fruits?

The answer is the nutritional values that an apple has. It makes it stand apart among the crowd of so many fruits.

So many virtues and qualities a single fruit has. An apple is beautiful, tasty and has a fine fragrance too. It can be grown almost everywhere except extreme conditions. It can be kept fresh for several days.

Apples comes in different colors and varieties from red to golden and from yellow to green. Its juicy, sweat, fleshy and sour also.

The most astonishing fact is that the apple has the largest number of varieties over the world till date. It has about more than 4000 varieties, even more than mango.

Even though many varieties of mango have already been discovered yet there are many which lay hidden from the eyes of human beings. So many flavors a single fruit encompasses.

It can be cooked, eaten raw or baked also. It is used in preparation of several dishes. Many sauces are made from it. Some of the dishes which are famous include apple pie, apple strudel, apple tzimmes etc.

Apples are very good for health because of it nutritional content. A very old famous saying, “ an apple a day keeps the doctor away  “.

There are so many vitamins and minerals in just one fruit that if consumed on a daily basis; our body’s vitamins and mineral supply need would be sufficient.

It helps in digestion and keeps our teeth clean also. No other fruit has so many qualities.

Also, its fibre has resistant qualities against many diseases. Apple’s richness in color is because of the fact that it belongs to the rose family just like plums and pears.

It is rich in dietary fibre called pectin which enhances bowel movement and reduces constipation in the body.

It is rich in Vitamin C. the soluble fibre pectin which is rich in apples helps to reduce blood cholesterol also. It has a flavonoid called Quercetin which helps to fight against cancer too.

Apples is a pome fruit. Its fleshy part is covered with thin skin which is why it is called a pome fruit.

The seeds are small and are placed at the inside in the center of the fruit. There are thousands of varieties of apple in the world. But only few are cultivated for commercial purposes.

One very important fact about apples that it cannot be grown by seeds. It is very strange that the tree grows belonging to some seeds of this plant but does not yield the same fruit of the same qualities.

To get a particular kind of apple you do not sow the seeds of that plant but instead of that, small twigs of the desired apple trees are implanted in the stems of other apple trees that have healthy roots to get a desired quality of apple.

Such a strange phenomenon this is. So good to see that from one healthy apple tree we can transplant many other apple trees.

Apple

Apples are grown commercially in gardens. They need proper distance as they are big in size. So they need enough room for themselves. An apple tree can bear fruits for a period of thirty to forty years if properly taken care.

Though America is the leading producer of Apple, yet the apple does not belong to America. They reached America via Britishers and Dutch   who brought the apple with them during their voyages.

Apple was already a popular fruit in European countries when they brought it to America.

French were also responsible for spreading this fruit to Canada and from there it spreads to the Atlantic states and America too.

The America’s consumption of apple fruit is very high as compared to the rest of the world. So it can be considered to be an almost national food for them.

Around one hundred million bushels of apples are produced every year in America. The consumption is so high that it has a significant hand in boosting the economy of America.

Several industries have been established in America to make different food products using apples which people are very fond of.

Not only Washington apples and New York apples are famous all over the world but also the Virginia, Michigan, Pennsylvania etc. are known for their taste.

Several varieties having different characteristics are grown for commercial purposes. Apples do not get spoiled easily in transits so it is easier to export it.

It is best grown in hilly stations and spots as it needs a dormant period to trigger the development of leaf and flower buds. A new plant yields a fruit in four to five years.

The Bible has treated apple as a forbidden fruit, the ‘apple’ in Bible is a symbolism of the sins that we commit; the outcomes of which look so tempting at first but are disastrous in the end.

Apple has been considered in the pious Bible because of its juicy and sweet taste. But the apple is poisonous.

The story of Adam and Eve is the story of evolution of the world according to the bible is based on the significance of apple.

According to the Bible, Adam and eve were the first man and woman on the face of the earth. Adam was created and from his rib Eve was created.

They were placed in the Garden of Eden. The god allowed them to eat each and every fruit other than one hanging on the tree of knowledge.

But someone lured Eve into testing the forbidden fruit ‘Apple’. She even shared it with the knowledge of right and wrong. But this came with a prove they had to pay death and sorrow.

Have you Burn Crackers this Diwali ? Yes No

Opinion No, Apple, people do not want tech to crush everything in its path

An Apple ad revealed the dystopian undercurrent running through our embrace of technological innovation.

essay on apple

It was the Apple ad heard around the world — or at least around the internet. Ominously titled “Crush!” the one-minute video depicted a giant hydraulic press flattening a variety of objects — a turntable, a camera, books, journals, artworks, buckets of paint, musical instruments. In their place, an iPad — the thinnest and most powerful version yet — appeared, as if out of a dream.

To many viewers, it seemed more like a nightmare. Here was one of the world’s largest, most iconic tech companies making a show, not of moving fast and breaking things, but of slowly, agonizingly grinding them down. And these weren’t just any objects. They were what many value as sources of beauty and joy. The imagery, too, was weirdly violent. In the ad’s closing moments, the hydraulic press squashed yellow emoji stress balls, forcing their cartoonish eyes from their sockets, followed by paint gushing forth like blood. The poor emojis were being tortured to the tune of Sonny and Cher’s chirpy 1972 hit cover of “All I Ever Need Is You.”

When Apple CEO Tim Cook shared the video on X, he seemed oblivious to any such considerations. The ad’s creators no doubt meant to riff on TikTok videos of crushing machines , presumably in an attempt to appeal to younger audiences. But 2024 is also a year in which the Oscar for best documentary short went to a deeply touching film about the repair and preservation of musical instruments for Los Angeles schoolchildren — and Apple, for some reason, didn’t get that. On X alone, “Crush!” cleared 50 million views in two days, but not, judging by the comments, because people liked it. Apple rushed to apologize : Tor Myhren, vice president of marketing communications, said “our goal is to always celebrate the myriad of ways users express themselves and bring their ideas to life through iPad. We missed the mark with this video, and we’re sorry.”

A misguided advertisement is not a crime. Critics of the ad, though, rightly sensed that it surfaced the dystopian undertone that any uncritical embrace of technological innovation can convey. As consumers, we are losing the ability to appreciate and hold the intimacy of the moment or even to have such moments in the first place. In this new world, an iPad rendition of a violin concerto is just as good as the real thing, and our experience of art, friendship and even romance is so mediated by screens that abbreviations like IRL (In Real Life) are necessary modifiers. Without our quite realizing it, life has become digitized. As philosopher Anton Barba-Kay warns in “A Web of Our Own Making,” “Technology will no longer be one causal force within the broader horizon of human nature and culture; it will provide the terms of the horizon itself.”

essay on apple

It wasn’t always this way. In a very different kind of ad introducing its Macintosh personal computer in 1984, Apple presented itself as an underdog against a Big Brother figure on a large screen intoning the words “we are one people, with one will, one resolve, one cause.” Chased by the thought police, an unnamed heroine runs toward that screen, destroying it with sledgehammer. Directed by Ridley Scott, the commercial is now remembered as a stroke of genius; AdAge called it one of the greatest television ads ever made . “1984” resonated because it spoke to tech’s potential for liberating human creativity. “Crush!” by contrast, seemed to propose channeling and constraining human creativity within one super-thin all-purpose device.

Of course, the idea that computers might save us from drudgery and uniformity was always overblown. But at least it was an appealing aspiration — an ode to culture rather than an attempt to flatten it. For Apple, and for everyone else, the backlash to “Crush!” is a reminder that, in valuing disruption for its own sake, tech companies risk becoming detached from the habits, loves and desires of ordinary people. And, both the content of that documentary, “The Last Repair Shop,” and the response to it showed that people seek a balance between progress and continuity.

Trust in the tech industry, though still high, is dropping , partly because of understandable fears about artificial intelligence’s impact on our everyday lives. What people reject isn’t the dynamism or innovation that technology delivers but the reflexive celebration of it without due concern for what needs to be permanent or cherished.

People don’t want everything to be broken. There are things — in this case, literal things — that we like for good reason. They are worth preserving and even fighting for, one advertisement at a time.

Better Siri is coming: what Apple’s research says about its AI plans

Apple hasn’t talked too much about ai so far — but it’s been working on stuff. a lot of stuff..

The Apple logo with a little AI sparkle.

It would be easy to think that Apple is late to the game on AI. Since late 2022, when ChatGPT took the world by storm, most of Apple’s competitors have fallen over themselves to catch up. While Apple has certainly talked about AI and even released some products with AI in mind, it seemed to be dipping a toe in rather than diving in headfirst.

But over the last few months, rumors and reports have suggested that Apple has, in fact, just been biding its time, waiting to make its move. There have been reports in recent weeks that Apple is talking to both OpenAI and Google about powering some of its AI features, and the company has also been working on its own model, called Ajax .

If you look through Apple’s published AI research, a picture starts to develop of how Apple’s approach to AI might come to life. Now, obviously, making product assumptions based on research papers is a deeply inexact science — the line from research to store shelves is windy and full of potholes. But you can at least get a sense of what the company is thinking about — and how its AI features might work when Apple starts to talk about them at its annual developer conference, WWDC, in June.

Smaller, more efficient models

I suspect you and I are hoping for the same thing here: Better Siri. And it looks very much like Better Siri is coming! There’s an assumption in a lot of Apple’s research (and in a lot of the tech industry, the world, and everywhere) that large language models will immediately make virtual assistants better and smarter. For Apple, getting to Better Siri means making those models as fast as possible — and making sure they’re everywhere.

In iOS 18, Apple plans to have all its AI features running on an on-device, fully offline model, Bloomberg recently reported . It’s tough to build a good multipurpose model even when you have a network of data centers and thousands of state-of-the-art GPUs — it’s drastically harder to do it with only the guts inside your smartphone. So Apple’s having to get creative.

In a paper called “ LLM in a flash: Efficient Large Language Model Inference with Limited Memory ” (all these papers have really boring titles but are really interesting, I promise!), researchers devised a system for storing a model’s data, which is usually stored on your device’s RAM, on the SSD instead. “We have demonstrated the ability to run LLMs up to twice the size of available DRAM [on the SSD],” the researchers wrote, “achieving an acceleration in inference speed by 4-5x compared to traditional loading methods in CPU, and 20-25x in GPU.” By taking advantage of the most inexpensive and available storage on your device, they found, the models can run faster and more efficiently.

Apple’s researchers also created a system called EELBERT that can essentially compress an LLM into a much smaller size without making it meaningfully worse. Their compressed take on Google’s Bert model was 15 times smaller — only 1.2 megabytes — and saw only a 4 percent reduction in quality. It did come with some latency tradeoffs, though.

In general, Apple is pushing to solve a core tension in the model world: the bigger a model gets, the better and more useful it can be, but also the more unwieldy, power-hungry, and slow it can become. Like so many others, the company is trying to find the right balance between all those things while also looking for a way to have it all.

Siri, but good

A lot of what we talk about when we talk about AI products is virtual assistants — assistants that know things, that can remind us of things, that can answer questions, and get stuff done on our behalf. So it’s not exactly shocking that a lot of Apple’s AI research boils down to a single question: what if Siri was really, really, really good?

A group of Apple researchers has been working on a way to use Siri without needing to use a wake word at all; instead of listening for “Hey Siri” or “Siri,” the device might be able to simply intuit whether you’re talking to it. “This problem is significantly more challenging than voice trigger detection,” the researchers did acknowledge, “since there might not be a leading trigger phrase that marks the beginning of a voice command.” That might be why another group of researchers developed a system to more accurately detect wake words . Another paper trained a model to better understand rare words, which are often not well understood by assistants.

In both cases, the appeal of an LLM is that it can, in theory, process much more information much more quickly. In the wake-word paper, for instance, the researchers found that by not trying to discard all unnecessary sound but, instead, feeding it all to the model and letting it process what does and doesn’t matter, the wake word worked far more reliably.

Once Siri hears you, Apple’s doing a bunch of work to make sure it understands and communicates better. In one paper, it developed a system called STEER (which stands for Semantic Turn Extension-Expansion Recognition, so we’ll go with STEER) that aims to improve your back-and-forth communication with an assistant by trying to figure out when you’re asking a follow-up question and when you’re asking a new one. In another, it uses LLMs to better understand “ambiguous queries” to figure out what you mean no matter how you say it. “In uncertain circumstances,” they wrote, “intelligent conversational agents may need to take the initiative to reduce their uncertainty by asking good questions proactively, thereby solving problems more effectively.” Another paper aims to help with that, too: researchers used LLMs to make assistants less verbose and more understandable when they’re generating answers.

AI in health, image editors, in your Memojis

Whenever Apple does talk publicly about AI, it tends to focus less on raw technological might and more on the day-to-day stuff AI can actually do for you. So, while there’s a lot of focus on Siri — especially as Apple looks to compete with devices like the Humane AI Pin, the Rabbit R1, and Google’s ongoing smashing of Gemini into all of Android — there are plenty of other ways Apple seems to see AI being useful.

One obvious place for Apple to focus is on health: LLMs could, in theory, help wade through the oceans of biometric data collected by your various devices and help you make sense of it all. So, Apple has been researching how to collect and collate all of your motion data, how to use gait recognition and your headphones to identify you, and how to track and understand your heart rate data. Apple also created and released “the largest multi-device multi-location sensor-based human activity dataset” available after collecting data from 50 participants with multiple on-body sensors.

Apple also seems to imagine AI as a creative tool. For one paper, researchers interviewed a bunch of animators, designers, and engineers and built a system called Keyframer that “enable[s] users to iteratively construct and refine generated designs.” Instead of typing in a prompt and getting an image, then typing another prompt to get another image, you start with a prompt but then get a toolkit to tweak and refine parts of the image to your liking. You could imagine this kind of back-and-forth artistic process showing up anywhere from the Memoji creator to some of Apple’s more professional artistic tools.

In another paper , Apple describes a tool called MGIE that lets you edit an image just by describing the edits you want to make. (“Make the sky more blue,” “make my face less weird,” “add some rocks,” that sort of thing.) “Instead of brief but ambiguous guidance, MGIE derives explicit visual-aware intention and leads to reasonable image editing,” the researchers wrote. Its initial experiments weren’t perfect, but they were impressive.

We might even get some AI in Apple Music: for a paper called “ Resource-constrained Stereo Singing Voice Cancellation ,” researchers explored ways to separate voices from instruments in songs — which could come in handy if Apple wants to give people tools to, say, remix songs the way you can on TikTok or Instagram.

An image showing the Ferret-UI AI system from Apple.

Over time, I’d bet this is the kind of stuff you’ll see Apple lean into, especially on iOS. Some of it Apple will build into its own apps; some it will offer to third-party developers as APIs. (The recent Journaling Suggestions feature is probably a good guide to how that might work.) Apple has always trumpeted its hardware capabilities, particularly compared to your average Android device; pairing all that horsepower with on-device, privacy-focused AI could be a big differentiator.

But if you want to see the biggest, most ambitious AI thing going at Apple, you need to know about Ferret . Ferret is a multi-modal large language model that can take instructions, focus on something specific you’ve circled or otherwise selected, and understand the world around it. It’s designed for the now-normal AI use case of asking a device about the world around you, but it might also be able to understand what’s on your screen. In the Ferret paper, researchers show that it could help you navigate apps, answer questions about App Store ratings, describe what you’re looking at, and more. This has really exciting implications for accessibility but could also completely change the way you use your phone — and your Vision Pro and / or smart glasses someday.

We’re getting way ahead of ourselves here, but you can imagine how this would work with some of the other stuff Apple is working on. A Siri that can understand what you want, paired with a device that can see and understand everything that’s happening on your display, is a phone that can literally use itself. Apple wouldn’t need deep integrations with everything; it could simply run the apps and tap the right buttons automatically.

Again, all this is just research, and for all of it to work well starting this spring would be a legitimately unheard-of technical achievement. (I mean, you’ve tried chatbots — you know they’re not great.) But I’d bet you anything we’re going to get some big AI announcements at WWDC. Apple CEO Tim Cook even teased as much in February, and basically promised it on this week’s earnings call. And two things are very clear: Apple is very much in the AI race, and it might amount to a total overhaul of the iPhone. Heck, you might even start willingly using Siri! And that would be quite the accomplishment.

Apple Celebrates Record-Breaking Success Following Persuasion of Manufacturing Partners to Embrace Clean Change: ‘More Hard Work Lies Ahead’

A pple’s monumental strides toward sustainability underscore a paradigm shift in the technology industry, where environmental stewardship is becoming as crucial as technological innovation. With its recent announcement of a staggering 55% reduction in carbon pollution since 2015, Apple has not only demonstrated its commitment to combatting climate change but has also set a new standard for corporate responsibility.

Central to Apple’s eco-friendly success story is its ability to mobilize and influence its extensive network of manufacturing partners. By persuading a significant majority of these partners to transition to 100% renewable energy sources for their Apple-related production, the company has achieved remarkable environmental gains. This collective effort has resulted in the avoidance of over 18.5 million metric tons of toxic planet-warming pollution in 2023 alone, a feat equivalent to removing 4 million gas-guzzling cars from the road.

However, Apple’s sustainability journey is far from over. Building on its initial success, the tech giant has set even more ambitious targets, aiming to slash pollution by 75% compared to 2015 levels across both its own operations and those of its partners by 2030. To address any remaining emissions, Apple plans to implement cutting-edge carbon removal techniques, with the ultimate goal of achieving a 90% reduction in pollution by 2050.

These commitments are already translating into tangible benefits for the environment. For example, Apple’s renewable energy projects in China are projected to generate enough clean electricity to power 2.5 million people. Additionally, the company’s eco-investments are supporting initiatives like habitat restoration, expected to remove 1 million metric tons of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere annually.

Apple’s leadership in environmental sustainability is particularly significant given the ongoing environmental challenges associated with electronics manufacturing. The extraction of raw materials required for electronic devices, such as rare earth metals, contributes to environmental degradation and pollution. However, with responsible leadership like Apple’s, the industry can play a pivotal role in finding solutions to these pressing environmental issues.

As consumers, witnessing Apple’s commitment to climate action serves as an inspiration and motivates us to support eco-friendly initiatives. It demonstrates that sustainable production practices can be adopted without compromising product quality or driving up costs. With continued innovation and collaboration, Apple aims to maximize its impact on environmental sustainability, paving the way for a cleaner, healthier planet for future generations.

Watch Apple Trash-Compact Human Culture

What was the company thinking?

A large hydraulic press in a warehouse is poised above an assortment of cultural items, including a guitar and a piano.

Listen to this article

Produced by ElevenLabs and News Over Audio (NOA) using AI narration.

Updated at 6:25 p.m. ET on May 9, 2024

Here is a nonexhaustive list of objects Apple recently pulverized with a menacing hydraulic crusher: a trumpet, a piano, a turntable, a sculpted bust, lots and lots of paint, video-game controllers.

These are all shown being demolished in the company’s new iPad commercial , a minute-long spot titled “Crush!” The items are arranged on a platform beneath a slowly descending enormous metal block, then trash-compactored out of existence in a violent symphony of crunching. Once the destruction is complete, the press lifts back up to reveal that the items have been replaced by a slender, shimmering iPad.

The notion behind the commercial is fairly obvious. Apple wants to show you that the bulk of human ingenuity and history can be compressed into an iPad, and thereby wants you to believe that the device is a desirable entry point to both the consumption of culture and the creation of it. (The ad is for the latest “Pro” model of the iPad, the price of which starts at $999 and goes as high as $2,299, depending on its configuration.) Most important, it wants you to know that the iPad is powerful and quite thin.

But good Lord, Apple, read the room. In its swing for spectacle, the ad lacks so much self-awareness, it’s cringey, even depressing. This is May 2024: Humanity is in the early stages of a standoff with generative AI, which offers methods through which visual art, writing, music, and computer code can be created by a machine in seconds with the simplest of prompts. Apple is reportedly building its own large language model for its devices, and its CEO, Tim Cook, explicitly invoked AI in his comments about the new tablet—the iPad Pro features, he said , an “outrageously powerful chip for AI.” Most of us are still in the sizing-up phase for generative AI, staring warily at a technology that’s been hyped as world-changing and job-disrupting (even, some proponents argue, potentially civilization-ending ), and been foisted on the public in a very short period of time. It’s a weird, exhausting, exciting, even tense moment. Enter: THE CRUSHER.

Apple is very good at defining the zeitgeist as it relates to how humans use technology to interact with the world. Announced with a Super Bowl commercial in 1984, the Macintosh ushered in the era of personal computing by presenting streamlined hardware and a pleasant graphical interface; iTunes and the iPod augured a world of limitless media; the iPhone delivered on its promise to fit the entire universe in our pocket. There is about a zero percent chance that the company did not understand the optics of releasing this ad at this moment . Apple is among the most sophisticated and moneyed corporations in all the world. (The company did not respond to a request for comment.)

But this time, it’s hard to like what the company is showing us. People are angry . One commenter on X called the ad “ heartbreaking .” Three reasons could explain why. First: Although watching things explode might be fun, it’s less fun when a multitrillion-dollar tech corporation is the one destroying tools, instruments, and other objects of human expression and creativity. Second, of course, is that this is a moment of great technological upheaval and angst, especially among artists, as tech companies build models trained on creative work with an ultimate goal of simulating those very people’s skilled output. It is easy to be offended at the ad’s implication, and it is easy to be aghast at the idea that AI will wipe out human creativity with cheap synthetic waste.

Read: These 183,000 books are fueling the biggest fight in publishing and tech

The third-order annoyance is in the genre. Apple has essentially aped a popular format of “crushing” videos on TikTok, wherein hydraulic presses are employed to obliterate everyday objects for the pleasure of idle scrollers. Arguably, the company thought that copying this specific motif would be fun, but something is grim about Apple trying to draft off a viral-video format to sell units. It’s unclear whether some of the ad might have been created with CGI, but Apple could easily round up tens of thousands of dollars of expensive equipment and destroy it all on a whim. However small, the ad is a symbol of the company’s dominance.

The ad remains, in some sense, great marketing. Everyone is talking about the iPad, a mainstay in Apple’s lineup that nevertheless gets far less attention than the iPhone. But this sudden interest offers room for a genuine appraisal of the device 14 years after its release. The iPad was one of Steve Jobs’s final products, one he believed could become as popular and perhaps as transformative as cars . That vision hasn’t panned out. The iPad hasn’t killed books, televisions, or even the iPhone. The commercial hails the new Pro model as “the most powerful iPad ever,” but its bravado is mostly unearned. The iPad is, potentially, a creative tool. It’s also an expensive luxury device whose cheaper iterations, at least, are vessels for letting your kid watch Cocomelon so they don’t melt down in public, reading self-help books on a plane, or opting for more pixels and better resolution whilst consuming content on the toilet.

In the day and a half since the ad was released, people have only gotten angrier. Cook’s post on X featuring the commercial has been viewed more than 29 million times, and the unhappy responses are piling up . (Since this story was published, Apple has apologized for the commercial and will no longer run it on TV, according to Ad Ag e .) Odds are, people aren’t really furious at Apple on behalf of the trumpeters—they’re mad because the ad says something about the balance of power. Apple is a great technology company, but it is a legendary marketer. Its ads, its slickly produced keynotes, and even its retail stores succeed because they offer a vision of the company’s products as tools that give us, the consumers, power. The fundamental flaw of Apple’s commercial is that it is a display of force that reminds us about this sleight of hand. We are not the powerful entity in this relationship. The creative potential we feel when we pick up one of their shiny devices is actually on loan. At the end of the day, it belongs to Apple, the destroyer.

Apple Says Destructive iPad Ad ‘Missed the Mark’

People in the creative world widely panned a commercial showing a giant hydraulic press squishing objects ranging from paint cans to a piano.

A giant hydraulic press squishing various items, like a guitar.

By Tripp Mickle

Tripp Mickle has covered Apple since 2016.

Apple doesn’t make mistakes often and seldom apologizes, but on Thursday, its head of advertising said the company had erred in making a new iPad commercial that showed an industrial compressor flattening tools for art, music and creativity.

“Creativity is in our DNA at Apple, and it’s incredibly important to us to design products that empower creatives all over the world,” said Tor Myhren, the company’s vice president of marketing communications, in a statement provided to the publication AdAge. “Our goal is to always celebrate the myriad of ways users express themselves and bring their ideas to life through iPad. We missed the mark with this video, and we’re sorry.”

Mr. Myhren said Apple would no longer run the ad on TV.

The company had faced a barrage of criticism from designers, actors and artists who saw the ad as a metaphor for how Big Tech has cashed in on their work by crushing or co-opting the artistic tools that humanity has used for centuries.

They found the crushing of a trumpet, piano, paints and a sculpture particularly unnerving at a time when artists fear that generative artificial intelligence, which can write poetry and create movies, might take away their jobs.

Apple had intended the ad to send the opposite message, that its ultrathin iPad Pro could power an array of creative activities that previously required individual tools.

Apple introduced the iPad commercial, called “Crush,” on Tuesday after revealing an update to its tablet lineup. Tim Cook, Apple’s chief executive, said in a post on X that it was a thin, advanced and powerful device. “Just imagine all the things it’ll be used to create,” he wrote.

The reversal joins a series of rare apologies by Apple over the past 15 years, including one in 2012 from Mr. Cook for the shortcomings of its new Maps app. The app’s problems included incorrect directions and the wrong location for certain landmarks.

Mr. Cook’s apology for Maps broke with Apple’s previous policy of resisting pressure after mistakes. In 2010, Apple was criticized for releasing an iPhone that would drop calls. Steve Jobs, the company’s co-founder and Mr. Cook’s predecessor, went on the offensive, saying at a news conference that the problem was not the phone but the way some customers were holding it.

The company, which had spent decades encouraging filmmakers, musicians and artists to use its devices, heard an immediate outcry from that group.
