Norwich City’s season in review: The Wagner bounce, goodbye Pukki, and that Sara goal

Gabriel Sara

The exceptionalism at Norwich City is over. At least for now.

An attempt to follow two previous Championship titles was always a tough task and so it has proved.

Of course, supporting a football club is not about expecting the exceptional. The special seasons take care of themselves. It’s about embracing the little moments of joy, humour, anger and incredulity before recalling them for the rest of time.

To that end, here is The Athletic ’s review of Norwich City’s season. May you enjoy these as much as the close season.

Best moment of the season

You will be surprised to know we have a platter of selections here.

At the top was the euphoria that came with the start of Championship life under David Wagner. Eight goals were scored in two away victories. “Dean Smith, it wasn’t our fault,” sang the Norwich supporters after feeling Wagner’s predecessor had suggested they were part of the reason things were falling flat.

David Wagner

Wagner got the immediate reaction he wanted. It just started to go wrong when he tried making changes himself.

Speaking of Smith, it was a delight for him — as an Aston Villa fan and former boss — to beat Birmingham at St Andrew’s thanks to an injury-time winner from fans’ favourite Onel Hernandez . Those were special moments that should have counted for more.

Josh Sargent representing Norwich at the World Cup in Qatar with the USMNT was magic, too, seeing him join an exclusive club of Norwich players to do so. Then, the final goodbye for Teemu Pukki at Carrow Road on Monday at least delivered the praise, thanks and appreciation the Finn so richly deserved.

Therefore, we can conclude that this season was not all bad.

Worst moment of the season

It is hard to describe how bad Boxing Day at Luton was for Norwich and Dean Smith. There was no interaction between head coach and supporters despite walking in front of them twice. A complete breakdown.

The press conference post-match was desperate and it was hard not to feel sorry for a man who would soon be labelled as the sole cause of Norwich’s issues. In the end, he was only part of the problem .

The dark days also came under Wagner and usually at Carrow Road. The 3-0 defeat at home to Russell Martin’s Swansea City showed just how far the club will need to travel this summer to rediscover their promotion credentials.

The 1-0 final-day defeat at home to Blackpool that threatened to undermine Pukki’s farewell reinforced the feeling.

Away from home at West Brom, first-team coach Andrew Hughes’ decision to engage with the travelling supporters at full-time was the last thing anyone needed and provided another low point in the campaign.

It should also be said that the club’s decision to shut the press out — and therefore the public — of their annual general meeting for the first time in more than 20 years was symptomatic of the club’s past 18 months.

They may have justified it because clubs are rarely so open as Norwich have been, but in doing so they diminished some of the aspects that have made Norwich unique and, with it, they played further into the narrative that it was disappearing into itself to avoid criticism and scrutiny.

Anyway, we had better stop there.

Biggest surprise of the season

The appointment to Norwich’s board of Milwaukee Brewers principal owner Mark Attanasio as a minority shareholder had been on the cards and was welcomed once confirmed in September .

More of a surprise was the news earlier this year that new shares would be issued for Attanasio and his backers to purchase after Norwich turned to their new US director in their financial need.

So far, the club has remained tight-lipped on whether the deal has been completed and what the money would be earmarked for. Either way, if and when it goes ahead, Delia Smith and Michael Wynn Jones will no longer be joint majority shareholders and Attanasio’s influence would be key to the club’s future.

Dean Smith, Scott Parker

On the pitch, the surprises were led by a summer signing from Chile, Marcelino Nunez . Having introduced himself with some eye-catching passing in his early performances, he then delivered a successful Panenka penalty in a Carabao Cup shootout win over Birmingham.

A few days later, Nunez produced a stunning free kick at Hull that would have looked at home in the Premier League . It’s hard to judge which is the greater surprise: his initial impact or how much it tailed off over the rest of the season.

I would love to say Norwich giving away a two-goal lead at Sheffield United was a surprise, but I can’t.

There was Norwich scoring from two creative corners at Millwall having just said goodbye to set-piece coach Allan Russell. There was a bit of praise from the Wagner camp floating around after that, although Norwich’s effectiveness at attacking and defensive set pieces regressed thereafter.

Funniest moment of the season

With some of Norwich’s defending this season, there has been a choice of either laugh or cry. So let’s go with laughing.

There was the open goal conceded at Hull back in August that reduced Nunez’s free kick to a footnote, as Max Aarons hit his own team-mates with a clearance. That moment exuded the carelessness that regularly returned for the following 23 games, including giveaways at home to Burnley , Preston and Blackburn in the FA Cup , as well as managing to draw 1-1 at Huddersfield without conceding a shot on target.

There were also smiles when Russell emerged as caretaker manager following Smith’s sacking and one of his biggest achievements was carrying Christina Aguilera into a concert arena in Scotland in 2003.

That said, he was arguably Norwich’s best-looking staff member this season, so an understandable anecdote.

Goal of the season

I won’t win this argument as everyone will vote for Nunez’s stunning volley out of the sky at home to Birmingham and, clearly, it is a fine goal.

creative writing courses norwich

But Gabriel Sara ’s swivel and shot at Millwall will always be the one for me. If you want to read why, you can do so here .

Game of the season

Plenty of the games already mentioned have good cases, especially the win at Millwall which was watched by FIFA president Gianni Infantino no less. Well, half of it was .

But the real winner here was in April when Carrow Road hosted Norwich City Women for the first time in their history. More than 7,500 supporters took in the game, Norwich won 5-3 against Ashford Town after seven goals were scored in the first half and Megan Todd’s late goal provided one of the iconic moments of the entire year.

It represented how far the women’s team have come, but also the hope for how far it can yet travel.

Quote of the season

“I’m fortunate that (the) outside noise, I don’t listen. I don’t watch. I don’t read what you write. I’m not on Twitter. So life is OK… Every decision I’ve made at this club was with that intention (of being in the Premier League). Have I got every one right? Absolutely not. But I challenge anyone who says they’ve got every decision right in their life. No one in this room has, that’s for sure.” — Stuart Webber at the unveiling of David Wagner as Norwich’s new head coach in January .

Player of the season

Votes are few and far between, in truth. Hernandez was a beacon of light in Norwich’s toughest times this season and had deserved more involvement previously. Liam Gibbs has also been a deserving young player of the season after breaking through and impressing.

There is no begrudging Sara winning the award, having been the one to catch the eye most regularly and at times earn Norwich points single-handedly. But it has been far from a vintage year for Norwich players.

What I most enjoyed writing about

The big moments bring real opportunities to dig into the reason for decisions and what their context might be. For that reason, it was fun to put together this on Wagner’s appointment, underlining some of the reasons he was chosen and why he was available.

During pre-season, it was also good to check in with former Norwich chief operating officer Ben Kensell — watching Hibernian ’s progress this season from afar has been interesting.

But as Norwich’s promotion hopes fell off a cliff, the chance to thank Teemu Pukki for his historic contribution to the club provided one more opportunity to remind everyone just how good it was.

Here’s hoping next season provides something a little closer to those exceptional memories.
