Steps to Become a Massachusetts Social Worker

While becoming a social worker across the United States varies, there are some common steps you need to take to be a social worker in Massachusetts. The  Board of Registration of Social Workers in Massachusetts  offers four levels of licensure as a social worker:

• Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker (LICSW)
• Licensed Certified Social Worker (LCSW)
• Licensed Social Worker (LSW)
• Licensed Social Work Associate (LSWA)

Each of these licenses meets different requirements. Some general and common steps to become a social worker in Massachusetts include: 

1. Obtain an approved social work education. 

Depending on which license you choose to pursue, Massachusetts requires either an accredited associate degree in social work or related field or a Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) or Master of Social Work (MSW) accredited by the  Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) .

2. Complete any required supervised social work hours.

Some of these licenses may require you to submit proof of completed social work hours under supervision of an approved professional. Depending on your education, you may need to complete more hours than other applicants.

3. Pass the appropriate ASWB exam. 

The type of Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) exam you pursue depends on your education and targeted social work license:

• LSWA: Associate Level
• LSW: Bachelors Level
• LCSW: Masters Level
• LICSW: Clinical Level

4. Collect three professional references. 

For any level of social work licensure you pursue in Massachusetts, three professional references are a minimum requirement. These must speak on your moral character and conduct as a future social worker.

5. Submit your social work license application to the Board of Registration of Social Workers. 

Once you have evidence and proof of satisfactorily meeting the above requirements, you may submit your application with a fee for social work licensure.

Degree Pathways to Become a Social Worker in MA

• Associate Degree in Social Work (ASW) : One way to pursue licensure as an LSWA in Massachusetts is to earn an associate-level degree in social work.
• Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) : BSW degrees are accepted for licensure as an LSW in Massachusetts.
• Online Master’s in Social Work (MSW) : A couple of universities in Massachusetts offer online MSW programs accredited by the CSWE. There are multiple online programs across the country also open for Massachusetts applicants.

The online Master of Social Work program from Howard University School of Social Work prepares students for advanced direct or macro practice in culturally diverse communities. Two concentrations available: Direct Practice and Community, Administration, and Policy Practice. No GRE. Complete in as few as 12 months.

• Complete at least 777-1,000 hours of agency-based field education
• Earn your degree in as few as 12 months

Syracuse University

Syracuse University’s online Master of Social Work program does not require GRE scores to apply and is focused on preparing social workers who embrace technology as an important part of the future of the profession. Traditional and Advanced Standing tracks are available.

• Concentrate your degree in integrated practice or clinical practice

Case Western Reserve University

In as few as a year and a half, you can prepare for social work leadership by earning your Master of Social Work online from Case Western Reserve University’s school of social work.

Social Work Licenses in Massachusetts 

All Massachusetts social workers will take an Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) exam of a corresponding level of difficulty to be licensed. Licensed Social Work Associate (LSWA) in Massachusetts

An LSWA may practice under supervision of a social worker who is an LICSW, LCSW or LSW with one hour per week of face-to-face supervision. LSWA may help with obtaining information from clients, assist in individual or group therapy and gather data for research. 

• Education Requirements:  Associate degree in social work or related field OR bachelor’s degree in any field OR minimum of 1,000 hours of education in social work theory and methods approved by the board.

Licensed Social Worker (LSW) in Massachusetts

LSWs in Massachusetts may provide non-clinical services under supervision of an LICSW or LCSW with one hour per week of face-to-face supervision. LSWs may also provide case management services, administrative support, consultations on non-clinical issues and tasks an LSWA may perform. 

• Education Requirements:  Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) from a CSWE-accredited program OR bachelors’ in any field OR two or less years of college with hourly experiences.
• Bachelor degree holder in any field: two years or 3,500 hours post-degree experience
• Two and a half years of college: five years or 8,750 hours
• Two years of college: six years or 10,500 hours
• One year of college: eight years or 14,000 hours
• High school diploma/equivalent: 10 years or 17,500 hours
• Exam:  Bachelors Level ASWB Exam
• License Renewal:  Biennially for $54

Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker (LICSW) in Massachusetts 

LICSW is the highest level of  social work licensure  for the state of Massachusetts. LICSWs may practice autonomously in any clinical or non-clinical setting and provide clinical, case management and non-clinical services as well as supervision for individuals or groups of social workers. LICSWs may also perform any duties of LSWAs, LSWs and LCSWs.

• Education Requirements:   MSW or a doctoral degree in social work from a CSWE-accredited program and a current license as a licensed certified social worker or equivalent license. 
• Field Requirements:  Two years or 3,500 hours of clinical social work services post-LCSW
• Exam:  Clinical Level ASWB Exam
• License Renewal:  Biennially for $82

Social Work Salaries for Massachusetts  

Social worker salaries  can vary by state. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the  median annual salary of a social worker in 2019 was $50,470 per year , which breaks down to $24.26 per hour.

Massachusetts Social Work Scholarships

The state of Massachusetts, as well as city and local governments, may provide  social work scholarships  to those who wish to pursue or advance their career. 

• Massachusetts Loan Repayment Program for Health Professionals : This loan forgiveness program offers $20,000 per year (up to $40,000) to primary care clinicians, including licensed clinical social workers, who practice in communities where significant shortages of health care providers and barriers to care have been identified.
• Community Foundation of Western Massachusetts : These scholarships, awarded to residents of Western Massachusetts and Hartford County in Connecticut, are for students at the college level or postgraduate level. Amounts vary. 
• MetroWest Health Foundation : These scholarships of up to $2,000 per academic year are offered to students who live or work in Massachusetts,Metro West area and are enrolled in a nursing, medical or clinical program.

Massachusetts Social Work Organizations 

There are a limited number of social work organizations in Massachusetts. Some of these groups may be affiliated with local schools of social work for alumni and may help with networking and continuing education. 

• The  National Association of Social Workers Massachusetts Chapter  can help with continuing education, support and networking for all levels of social workers in Massachusetts. 
• The  Greater Boston Association of Black Social Workers, Inc  is a founding chapter of the National Association of Black Social Workers, Inc. that advocates for social change, justice and human development of African people in the United States and the world.

Does Massachusetts have social work reciprocity?

While there is some level of reciprocity in Massachusetts, it isn’t as easy as showing your license and being able to practice. The Massachusetts Board offers licensure by reciprocity to applicants who are licensed and in good standing in any of the ASWB’s member jurisdictions. This means those looking to move their practice to Massachusetts do not need to retake exams but they will have to provide documentation to be licensed. 

Full reciprocity is a system in which states acknowledge licenses from other states. When you begin practicing in a new state, you will need to provide the new state with much of the same information as the jurisdiction in which you are currently licensed. This can include transcripts, supervision documents, background information and more.

What are the social work continuing education (CE) requirements in Massachusetts?  

Massachusetts social workers of all levels of licensure are required to take  continuing education  (CE) before their license renewal period. The  CE requirements for social workers in Massachusetts  are as follows:

• LICSW – 30 hours of continuing education every two years
• LCSW – 20 hours of continuing education every two years
• LSW – 15 hours of continuing education every two years
• LSWA – 10 hours of continuing education every two years

The Massachusetts licensing board does accept distance learning for these CE hours.

Eligibility and documentation

• An official, certified transcript is required for the highest relevant degree. The transcript must be sent electronically directly from the school to [email protected] .
• Applicants must be currently licensed in Massachusetts at the LCSW level (or equivalent in another jurisdiction). Applicants must provide the correct license information.
• Passing of the Clinical exam
• LICSW (or equivalent clinical social work license in another jurisdiction)
• Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC)
• Licensed Family and Marriage Therapist (LMFT)
• Psychiatrist
• Psychologist
• Psychiatric nurse with a specialty in clinical mental health
• For MSW graduates with a degree conferred date after August 31, 2011, a minimum of 3,500 hours clinical social work services experience obtained over a period of not less than two years after the issuance of a LCSW
• For MSW graduates with a degree conferred date prior to August 31, 2011, a minimum of 3,500 hours clinical social work services experience obtained over a period of not less than two years after the MSW degree conferred date
• Documented supervision must be a minimum of 100 hours of individual face-to-face clinical supervision, at a rate of 1 hour for every 35 hours worked (with a maximum of 1 hour per week). If the experience is earned at a rate less than 35 hours per week, the experience and supervision hours must be computed on a pro-rata basis. Clinical duties must meet the scope of practice provision 1 or 2.
• Supervisors must be licensed in the jurisdiction where the supervision takes place; out of state supervisors may not supervise work experience taking place in MA. All work experience must be complete as of the application date.
• A criminal history acknowledgment form (PDF) must be notarized, signed with corresponding dates, and mailed or faxed to ASWB.
• A 2” x 2” clear, color photo must be uploaded via the online application, or emailed as an attachment to [email protected].
• Applicants will be notified via email when the application has been approved or needs further attention.
• If approved, applicants will receive information regarding registering for the ASWB examination.
• Applicants may not register for the examination until the application has been approved.
• LICSW applicants must review the MassHealth enrollment requirement
• Passing of the Masters exam
• Three references are required. At least one of the references must be completed by an individual licensed at the LICSW or LCSW level (or equivalent social work licenses in another jurisdiction). All references must be qualified to evaluate the applicant’s social work experience. Please provide a current email address for each reference so that a secure link can be sent to the references listed on your application.
• The most recent advanced field placement supervisor must document the placement supervision that was completed as part of the CSWE accredited MSW program curriculum.
• A 2” x 2” clear, color photo must be uploaded via the online application, or emailed as an attachment to [email protected] .
• Passing of the Bachelors exam
• Two professional references
• One field placement supervisory reference to document the placement supervision that was completed as part of the CSWE accredited BSW program curriculum
• Social worker who holds a MSW or BSW from a CSWE accredited school
• LCSW (or equivalent masters social work license in another jurisdiction)
• Passing the Associates exam
• Three professional references are required. At least one reference must be completed by an individual licensed at the LICSW or LCSW level (or equivalent social work license in another jurisdiction). All references must be qualified to evaluate the applicant’s social work experience. Please provide a current email address for each reference so that a secure link can be sent to the references listed on your application.
• If the applicant does not hold a bachelor’s degree in any field or an associate’s degree in a human services field, then a supervisory reference must be supplied to document a minimum of four years of social work experience.

Licensed Social Work Assistant (LSWA)

• If you wish to attain the title Licensed Social Worker (LSW) in Massachusetts, you must first get an Associate’s degree in a human services field. Alternately you may hold a High School diploma but are required to have four years of documented experience in a human services field.
• If you do not have an associate’s degree you must also provide three professional references. You must then apply for the title providing proof of education to the Massachusetts State Board of Social Work Examiners.
• Finally, you must pass the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Associate Level Exam.
• To renew your license, you must have successfully completed 10 contact hours of continuing education.

Licensed Social Worker (LSW)

• If you wish to attain the title Licensed Social Worker ( LSW ) in Massachusetts, you must first get a Bachelor of Social Work degree from a Council on Social Work Education accredited university or college.
• If you have an unrelated bachelor’s degree you will need a minimum of 3,500 hours of supervised practice. If you do not have a bachelor’s degree but have at least 2.5 years of college you will need 5 full years of supervised practice, if you have one year of collegiate experience you will need eight years of supervised practice. If you only have a high school diploma you will need a full ten years of supervised practice to apply.
• You must also provide one (BSW applicants) to three professional references (all other candidates). You must then apply for the title providing proof of education to the Massachusetts State Board of Social Work Examiners.
• Finally, you must pass the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Bachelor’s Level Exam.

• Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW)
• To become a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) in Massachusetts, you must first get your Master of Social Work degree from a Council on Social Work Education accredited university or college.

Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker (LICSW)

• If you wish to hold the title of Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker (LICSW) in Massachusetts, you must first get a Master or Doctorate of Social Work degree from a Council on Social Work Education accredited university or college.
• You must also provide proof of at least 3,500 hours of post-graduate clinical social work experience. The supervision must be by that of an LICSW or a professional with equivalent licensure in another state. You must log all 3,500 hours within a two year period that begins after graduation. The 3,500 hours must include 100 hours of face-to-face clinical supervision by the LICSW.
• Once you have completed and sent in your application you may apply with the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) for their Clinical Level exam. Once you pass the test you will be eligible to receive your new title of Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker in the state of Massachusetts.
• To renew your license, you must have successfully completed 40 contact hours of continuing education.

Licensed Social Worker (LSW)

Licensed Certified Social Worker (LCSW)

• Documented post-degree experience – A clinical supervisor licensed at the LICSW level must provide documentation of the student’s completed clinical work experience. Students must have obtained 3,500 hours of clinical social work experience, in no less than two years, after the date they received their LCSW. A minimum of 100 hours must be face-to-face with a clinical supervisor.
• Application fee
• Register for, schedule, and pass the ASWB clinical social work exam.
• Apply for a license. The license approval time varies. Generally, it takes up to two weeks for the Board of Registration of Social Workers to receive exam scores, followed by another week or more for the board to issue a license.

Social Work Post-Licensure

Every two years, all licensed social workers in Massachusetts are required to renew their license on or before its expiration date, or they can reinstate that license at any time within one year after the expiration date. To renew or reinstate licenses, all social workers must complete a certain number of continuing education hours:

How many hours of CE credit does Massachusetts require for social workers?

Massachusetts’ continuing education requirements vary based on the license held.

Massachusetts social work licenses (LICSW, LCSW, LSW, and LSWA)  must be renewed by every 2 years by the licensee’s birthdate .

All Massachusetts social workers must complete board-approved  domestic violence and sexual violence training  during each 2-year licensing period.  Massachusetts offers this training for free ( available here ).

For all license renewals  beginning September 28, 2023 , Massachusetts social workers, regardless of license type, must also complete:

• 2 hours in Anti-Racism , and
• 1 hour in Anti-Discrimination

Up to 25% of the total required continuing education credit for any license type may be earned through courses that have been approved for other professions, provided they are (i) approved by (or offered by a provider approved by) the American Psychological Association (“APA”), National Board for Certified Counselors (“NBCC”), Board of Nursing Home Administrators (“NHA”), American Nurses Credentialing Center (“ANCC”) or the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (“ACCME”), and (ii) contribute to the professional competence of the licensee.  CE4Less is approved by the ASWB, APA, and NBCC (see our  Accreditations page  for more information).  ANCC-approved courses are also available through  NurseCE4Less.com .

License Renewal Information: In Wyoming, certified social workers must pay $100 to renew their license without a background check. LCSWs must pay $125 to renew.

Types of Social Work Licenses

You can obtain several social worker licenses . Licensed social worker definitions and requirements also vary by state. Which one you pursue depends on yourdepends on your location, degree, and career trajectory.

Each social work license qualifies you for different jobs within the field. For example, a licensed clinical social worker and a licensed master social worker have different career options — LCSWs can run a private practice and diagnose mental health conditions while LMSWs cannot.

Licensed Baccalaureate of Social Work (LBSW)

A licensed baccalaureate of social work certification is the first step toward becoming a practicing social worker. LBSWs work in supervised clinical and nonclinical settings but cannot provide clinical services.

To get an LBSW, you must earn a bachelor’s social work degree from an accredited program, pass the ASWB exam, and fulfill your state’s requirements. All states require supervised practice prior to earning an LBSW, typically between 2,000-4,000 hours.

Licensed Master of Social Work (LMSW)

Earning your MSW license allows you to practice as a non-clinical social worker. LMSW allows you to become a social worker in most states, and it’s often a step toward clinical practice. LMSWs may provide case management in social service agencies or work in policy or community development.

Getting an LMSW license requires up to 4,000 hours of generalized social work practice following graduation from an accredited master’s social work program. Candidates must apply for licensure in their state and meet all state requirements, including passing the ASWB exam.

Licensed Graduate Social Worker (LGSW)

The LGSW license allows master’s or doctoral graduates to practice social work in a couple of states. Licensed graduate social workers can provide clinical social work services but only under supervision of a clinical social worker.

LGSWs may choose to teach social work education at both the community college level. For some professionals, this license can help prepare them for jobs as independent clinical social workers later in their careers. To become LGSWs, candidates need an accredited graduate degree in social work and pass the ASWB master’s exam.

Licensed Master Social Worker – Advanced Generalist (LMSW – AG)

The LMSW – AG license is the most highly regarded nonclinical license. It demonstrates advanced experience in nonclinical, macro social work. These licensed social workers have completed two years of non-clinical supervised practice in addition to the hours earned in the LMSW.

The LMSW – AG is a terminal license for nonclinical social workers. Advanced Generalists apply social work processes to improve community health through interventions, policy development, and research. Earning the LMSW – AG requires passing the ASWB exam for generalists. Many states have more stringent guidelines for the license, including additional practice hours and exams. Candidates must be graduates from an accredited master’s program.

Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW)

LCSW is the terminal license for clinical social workers. Licensed clinical social workers provide clinical assessments, treatment, and interventions. LCSWs frequently maintain a private practice where they diagnose mental health conditions and provide psychotherapy. They also work in treatment centers, group homes, or government agencies. It is the only license in most states that allows social workers to provide clinical services.

The LCSW license requires 4,000 hours of supervised clinical practice. LCSWs must possess a master’s or doctoral degree from an accredited program, pass the ASWB clinical exam, and meet continuing education requirements in their state.

Social Work License Reciprocity

Professional license reciprocity allows you to transfer your license to another state. There is no nationally recognized system of social work license reciprocity, but most states provide reciprocity if all social work requirements are met. Generally, licensed social workers do not need to repeat requirements to transfer their license. Most states accept original ASWB exam scores. Social workers may need to provide evidence of supervised professional experience, so it is important to maintain thorough records.

Social work licenses vary by state, so you may not be able to directly transfer your title. If there are differences between the state licensure requirements and your experience, the licensing board requires you to complete those requirements before granting licensure. You may need to take specific courses in ethics or state law and provide a letter of recommendation from your previous licensing board. You also need to fulfill state insurance requirements.

The bachelor of social work (BSW) program at Salem State prepares you to be a catalyst for social change, founded in the values of social justice, inclusion, diversity, and cultural humility. You’ll receive a thorough background in the theories of social work, research skills, and learn how social policies impact individuals, families, organizations, and communities. A senior year internship will provide an opportunity to learn to apply these skills in the field, preparing you for a career in social work.

Students minoring in social work are not eligible for state licensing upon graduation but may find this preparation helpful in selecting a career direction or in considering graduate school in social work.

All students may enroll in certain courses offered to non-majors on a space available basis. Non-majors who wish advising regarding clustering courses to reach individual learning goals should consult with the BSW program coordinator.

Graduate Degrees

The Salem State University MSW Program offers students a comprehensive MSW experience focused on integrated practice for health and behavioral health. This is a flexible program that offers students the opportunity to create a unique MSW experience through their choices of electives and field placements. Students can complete the program in two or more years. Options available include an Online Program ,  Advanced Standing option available for those with a BSW degree, and our Fall Start Program which has flexible completion times.

The incumbent will be responsible for providing services to eligible individuals who are experiencing a variety of military related psychological and psychosocial problems. Incumbents must possess the knowledge and experience to independently implement psychotherapeutic modalities in working with individuals, families, and groups to enhance the readjustment of Veterans, active duty Service members, and their families. Functions and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

• Intake screening and assessment: Complete all readjustment counseling intake procedures, including an assessment of risk for self-harm, military history and military related psychosocial stressors, and assess family readjustment stressors and document identified behaviors or symptoms.
• Readjustment counseling goal setting and service planning: Develop and periodically update an individualized readjustment counseling service plan that reflects a course of therapeutic and psychosocial interventions, including identification of achievable goals and measurable outcomes.
• Direct readjustment counseling service provision: Incorporate complex multiple causation in differential psychosocial assessment and direct service delivery to eligible Veterans, including making psychosocial and psychiatric diagnostic inferences within the clinical scope of practice.
• Risk assessment and crisis intervention: Conduct timely assessment of Veterans in crisis to identify immediate needs, evaluate risk, and initiate safety planning as appropriate.
• Care coordination: Links the Veteran with other community services, resources, and opportunities to maximize the Veteran's independence, health, and well-being.
• Coordinating readjustment counseling and outreach: Maintain active coordination with Vet Center outreach workers to ensure seamless referral to Vet Center services for those individuals engaged in the community at outreach events that may require follow-up readjustment counseling.
• Team cohesion and coordination: Actively participate in staff meetings designed to promote team building and staff development.
• Documentation/administrative responsibilities/consultation: Document all clinical interactions with eligible individuals and episodes of care coordination on their behalf as required by policy.

Verification of the degree can be made by going to the CSWE website to verify if that social work degree meets the accreditation standards for a Master of Social Work.
• Exception: VHA may waive the licensure or certification requirement for persons who are otherwise qualified, pending completion of state prerequisites for licensure/certification examinations. This exception only applies at the GS-9 grade level. For the GS-11 grade level, the candidate must be licensed or certified.
• Ability to work with Veterans and family members from various socioeconomic, cultural, ethnic, educational, and other diversified backgrounds utilizing counseling skills.
• Ability to assess the psychosocial functioning and needs of Veterans and their family members, and to formulate and implement a treatment plan, identifying the Veterans problems, strengths, weaknesses, coping skills, and assistance needed.

Program Details

We offer two MSW programs: Traditional and Advanced Standing.

Both programs incorporate trauma-informed and human rights perspectives and allow you to personalize your advanced-year coursework to focus on the populations and issues you are passionate about.

If your goals include obtaining your clinical social work license (LCSW), you can easily earn the 12 required   clinical course credits to work towards that goal through our program.

Traditional MSW On-Campus

• For students with a bachelor's degree in any undergraduate major
• 900 total field placement hours (420 hour foundation placement + 480 hour advanced placement)
• Offered full-time (2 years) or part-time (3 years)

Field Education

Your field placement hours are built right into the program requirements and are specialized field training opportunities that allow you to explore the practice areas that interest you. 

• Completed over the course of two semesters each
• Minimum of 15 hours per week
• Completed during weekday daytime working hours
• Students who are working in a social service agency may want to consider an Employment-Based Field Placement
