Thus, the Problem Set and Homework include problems where students will work with elapsed time that is still given in minutes, as the standard requires, but exceeds an hour.
• As noted in Lesson 4, “an open number line can be a useful tool to help students visualize and organize the information” given in elapsed time problems and find their solution" (" Dajuana's Homework ", Illustrative Mathematics).
• No matter what, avoid having students try to solve these problems as they would typical addition and subtraction problems, since base 60 (as is the case with minutes and hours) is very challenging to compute in. For example, students should not find the amount of elapsed time between 4:30 p.m. and 5:13 p.m. by regrouping an hour to be 4:73 and subtracting.

Learn to tell time to the nearest five minutes - video lessons

In this video lesson, children learn to tell time on an analog clock to the five-minute intervals. I use a clock that shows the numbers for the minute hand , written on the outside of the clock rim. Those numbers of course go by fives (you count by fives). So, the students can simply look at the numbers on the clock for the hour hand, and the numbers I wrote outside the clock for the minute hand, to tell the time.

In the 2nd part of this lesson, we concentrate on the "tricky times" on an analog clock -- those near the next full hour (times with 45, 50 or 55 minutes). I use a clock with numbers for the minute hand to make it easier for students.

In this lesson we focus on not getting fooled by the hour hand, when it looks like it's already pointing to the next hour, but in reality, it's not there quite yet. These are times such as 2:55 or 8:50, where the minute hand is close to finishing its full round.

For the same example, the explanation page will show the analog clock displaying the correct time, along with a written explanation: "The clock with the correct answer has the hour hand between five and six. Additional features in this this third-grade math lesson help students maximize their math practice experience. A progress-tracker on the screen shows students how many questions they have answered out of the total number of questions in the lesson.
