There are two options for degrees: a master's of engineering and a master's of science in engineering.

A graduate degree is not required for most engineering positions, but it is advantageous – especially for individuals interested in conducting research at a company or working as a college professor.

Getting either a master's degree or doctorate in engineering can lead to higher salaries, specialized skill development and career advancement.

"While undergraduate degrees provide a general overview of the field with some opportunities to dig a little bit deeper, a master's program really allows them to go one step further," says Doreen Edwards, dean of the Kate Gleason College of Engineering at Rochester Institute of Technology in New York. "Students will get more information and learn more skills related to a specific topic, and take their analytical and critical thinking skills to the next level."

There are two options for degrees: a master's of engineering and a master's of science in engineering. Curriculum varies by graduate program , but a master's of science typically revolves around research, while a master's of engineering focuses more on projects and developing workforce-relevant skills.

"There's a lot of overlap so it depends on the individual and what their career aspirations are," says Kristina Ropella, dean of the Opus College of Engineering at Marquette University in Wisconsin.

Engineering graduates – whether they have a master's degree or only an undergraduate degree – are in high demand.

Among all engineers, the average job growth rate projected between 2021 and 2031 is 5%, with the median salary in 2021 being $99,040, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. That is in line with the average national job growth rate, but more than double the median annual salary of all U.S. occupations, which is $45,760.

Here are six engineering career paths that demonstrate faster than average job growth rates and offer high-paying salaries. While a graduate degree isn't always required for these jobs, having one would likely give you a leg up.

Hot Jobs for Engineering Graduates

Software developer, computer and information research scientist, industrial engineer, chemical engineer, bioengineer and biomedical engineer, petroleum engineer.

Given the popularity of technology and artificial intelligence, software developers are needed in nearly every sector, experts say.

In 2021, there were more than 1.6 million jobs for software developers and software quality assurance analysts and testers. That number is projected to increase by 25% from 2021 to 2031, according to the BLS.

Software developers design and create software to meet users' needs, while software quality assurance analysts and testers implement tests to identify software issues. Not only are these jobs expected to grow, but they're also high-paying. The median annual wage for software developers and quality assurance analysts and testers was $109,020 in 2021, BLS reported.

The heavy reliance on technology and the internet has also led to growth in related jobs, including computer and information research scientists. Employment in this area is expected to grow 21% over the next decade, with 40,600 jobs predicted in 2031, according to the BLS.

Computer and information research scientists develop solutions and models to address computing problems, with many working for the federal government. The median annual salary in 2021 was $131,490, about $34,000 higher than the median for all computer occupations, BLS reported.

"Engineering salaries are high in general, but computer science is significantly higher," says James A. Smith, associate dean for graduate education and professor of civil engineering at the University of Virginia . "A lot of the tech companies are laying off employees right now. It'll be interesting to see if that has an influence in the next couple of years."

Many employers require at least a master's degree in computer science or a related field, like computer engineering, but some favor candidates with a doctoral degree.

Consumers and companies alike recently have been struggling with supply chain issues. Industrial engineers – who aim to increase efficiency in workforce processes and eliminate waste of raw materials, money and time in production – are steeped in these challenges. Most work in manufacturing, in areas such as transportation, computer and electronic products and machinery.

Though the median annual wage of industrial engineers , $95,300, is slightly lower than the average among all engineers, BLS predicts that the number of jobs within this sector will rise 10% between 2021 and 2031.

Rather than pursuing industrial engineering as an undergraduate, many start in other disciplines, like electrical or mechanical engineering, experts say.

Chemical engineers play a role in the current transition to renewable energy, which is leading to an uptick in jobs, experts say. The BLS projects employment will grow 14% by 2031, to 30,700 jobs.

Individuals in this discipline use concepts from chemistry, biology, math and physics to solve problems related to the production or use of products, like fuel, food and drugs. The median salary for chemical engineers was $105,550 in 2021, with one of the highest paid areas being petroleum and coal products manufacturing, according to the BLS.

Bioengineers and biomedical engineers design medical equipment and devices – like replacements for body parts and artificial internal organs – and train clinicians and others how to use the equipment.

The median salary for bioengineers and biomedical engineers was slightly lower than than the average among all engineers, $97,410, with the highest paying industry being navigational, measuring, electromedical and control instruments manufacturing, according to BLS data. But the job growth rate is projected to be 10%, with 19,700 positions predicted by 2031.

Petroleum engineers design methods for extracting oil and gas from reservoirs below the Earth's surface or older wells. They work with specialists to learn about the geological formation of the rocks before designing and implementing the drilling plan.

The median annual pay for petroleum engineers – who travel often to drilling and well sites – was $130,850 in 2021, well above the median salary for all engineering disciplines, according to the BLS.

There were 22,800 petroleum engineering jobs in 2021, with 26% of those being in the oil and gas extraction industry. Over the next decade, the discipline is expected to experience above average job growth – 8% – BLS data indicates.

PhD Frequently Asked Questions

Where do i find information.

  • Go to Stanford's Graduate Admissions site .
  • Explore all the information available on our Chemical Engineering site, (including the faculty pages and and the multiple pages under the PhD and admissions tabs). If these resources do not address any remaining questions, please send an email to the department at [email protected] . Use your email subject line: Admissions - [family name] - [topic of your inquiry]

When may admitted PhD applicants visit Stanford?

March 2-5 2023, is the Chemical Engineering Virtual Visit Weekend. If you are seriously considering Stanford's Chemical Engineering's PhD program for your doctoral work, please reserve these dates for your virtual Stanford visit, as we will be unable to accommodate a request to visit at another time.

How long does it take to get the PhD degree?

The average time to earn a PhD degree is between 5 and 6 years. Some students finish a little earlier and some a bit later.

If I have a master's degree from another university, do I need to get a MS from Stanford before pursuing a PhD?

No. In Chemical Engineering, having an MS degree is not a requirement for conferral of a PhD degree. PhD students without a master's may petition for conferral of a Stanford master's in the course of fulfilling their PhD requirements. Matriculated PhD students with a MS earned elsewhere either may petition for conferral of a Stanford MS or may petition for approval of transfer units, to be applied toward the total unit requirements for a PhD degree. Any student contemplating petitioning for approval of transfer units should consult first with departmental student services.

How many faculty members do you have and how long have they been teaching?

See the faculty pages. Our faculty is well-distributed in terms of experience and areas of emphasis.

What are the course requirements, and how long do they generally take to complete?

PhD students take 10 units per quarter.

PhD students take three 3-unit courses and one 1-unit colloquium (seminar) per quarter in the first two quarters and the majority of their lecture courses during the first two academic years. Then they finish the coursework requirements by taking a class here and there until they have a total of 42 units for lecture courses in science and engineering, plus 3 units of colloquia (seminar). Because of the importance faculty place on honing communication skills while pursuing a doctorate, all candidates are also required to assist in the teaching of two chemical engineering courses.

What are PhD research rotations?

Each first-year PhD student rotates with two different faculty research groups before choosing an advisor and lab in which to develop his or her own research projects. The rotations enable students to gain a better understanding of a given faculty member’s research program and to determine if that lab is a good fit for their future research. Furthermore, during the first six months, there are multiple opportunities to talk with a wide range of faculty members about their research.

How do PhD qualifying examinations work? What is the usual pass rate?

To be admitted to PhD candidacy, students must pass a qualifying examination, taken at the end of the summer quarter of the first year, respectively. The PhD Qualifying Examination has three parts:

  • A one-page written summary of their research project
  • A 20-minute presentation about the research project before research advisors and other faculty examiners
  • A 20-minute question-and-answer session with faculty

This exam focuses on the student’s progress report on original research performed during the previous half-year, e.g. from April until the time of the exam in late September. A progress report may have no conclusions, but the talk should demonstrate a depth of thinking about the research strategy and the fundamental chemical, physical and biological concepts that govern the molecular behavior of the system being studied.  The focus is on the ability to think critically and to communicate understanding the fundamental concepts, techniques and questions within the field. The faculty are looking for the student's understanding of how one's research relates to the field as a whole and how he or she demonstrates an understanding of where the project will lead.

Most years, all rising second-year PhD students pass their PhD candidacy examination. The format of this examination is designed to test for the essential skills of the successful researcher — the abilities involved in approaching new problems from a perspective grounded in scientific fundamentals. The focus is not on having the right answers, but in formulating approaches rooted in the scientific method. The faculty do their utmost to select applicants who will thrive as doctoral researchers, with the objective that the selection process should take place at the time of admission. The faculty, other students and staff are all motivated by the ultimate success of each year’s PhD students with their examinations. This culture fosters a uniquely positive environment of collaboration and teamwork among all students, rather than competition based on a "survival of the fittest" mentality.

How does PhD advisor selection work?

All during the first two quarters, first-year PhD students have many ways to become familiar with individual faculty, their research projects, students in their research groups, and how a research group functions. Toward the end of the second quarter each student-faculty dyad formalize their advisee-advisor relationship and then PhD students join their advisors’ research groups at the beginning of spring quarter, and start on their own projects.

Can I work with faculty outside of the department?

Yes. Some past examples have been with faculty in physics, chemistry, materials sciences, mechanical engineering, environmental microbiology, bioengineering and biochemistry.  These students also have a Chemical Engineering faculty co-advisor who helps ensure good degree progress and sits on the reading committee formed in the second year.

What sort of job opportunities does a PhD degree in chemical engineering from Stanford usually enable?

Graduates of our department are extremely versatile with regards to their post-doctorate careers. Over the last few years, many of the graduates from various research groups have chosen to spend a couple of years as a post-doc in another research lab (usually not at Stanford) either in preparation for a research/academic job or in profiting from further research experience before entering industry. Stanford grads are now current professors at many top universities (MIT, Harvard, etc.) or members of prestigious research centers (IBM, national labs, etc.). A significant number of students decide to enter industrial positions upon graduation, as engineers, consultants, etc. You will find companies from all sectors actively recruiting Stanford chemical engineers, including companies in the local biotech and nanotechnology industries.

What kinds of jobs do PhDs get and where?

There is a saying that a chemical engineer can do anything, and the range of employment and career options available to our students demonstrates this. Approximately two-thirds of our PhD students find challenging jobs in fundamental or applied research either in industry or national laboratories. Further generalization is not possible — graduates find careers in areas as diverse as the information technology companies, biotechnology, the oil industry, the chemical process industry, renewable resources and private consulting. (Approximately one-third go into teaching and research as a profession).

Student Life

Housing and living.

Stanford has a strong residential character. Over half of all graduate students live in university-operated apartments. The university’s residence system is among the largest and most diverse.

How does on-campus housing work?

There is a lottery and when you enter it, you list your choice of housing options in preferential order. Housing is guaranteed for first-year graduate students, but this means that you must apply on time and select the option that you are willing to accept any living arrangement (studio, two people in a two-bedroom, three people in a two-bedroom, etc.). If you submit your choices by the deadline, usually you obtain your top housing choices.

Students can renew the same housing assignment for the following year without entering a lottery. Thus, if you are happy with whatever assignment you get in the fall of your first year (and you live in a residence that is open year-round), in the spring of your first year you now can just check "renew" on your housing application for the next year and keep your assignment for the following year.

Pets are not allowed in campus housing.

How much does on-campus housing cost per month?

The cost of housing varies. The general rule of thumb is that the more room/suite-mates you have, the lower the rent. If you would like to have a room to yourself (double-occupancy two-bedroom, etc.) then you should expect to pay more. If you do not mind sharing a room, then the cost drops some.

What is included in on-campus housing costs?

In addition to the rent, the cost of housing covers basic utilities (electricity and water). Laundry is free to students living on campus. Also, most on-campus apartments are furnished so you don't have to worry about the cost of furniture. Additional charges will apply for an internet connection, cable TV, etc. (These facilities are easily available and are relatively inexpensive). If you have a car, you will need to purchase a campus parking permit, but they are inexpensive for students.

What are the off-campus housing options?

A popular way to find off-campus housing is to use Craigslist . You can perform specific searches of price ranges or towns or places that accept pets. The places listed include condos, homes for rent, individual cottages, or apartments. If you do a search on Craigslist, go to "apts/housing" and then click on "Peninsula" at the top of the screen (S.F. Bay Area prompt). Depending upon the specific location, the following towns are within bikeable distance from Stanford: Menlo Park, Atherton and Palo Alto. Redwood City, Los Altos and Mountain View are a minimum of a ~30 min bike ride.

How much do off-campus apartments costs per month?

Depending upon how many roommates you have, monthly rent can range from $900-$1,700/per person.

How can I find a roommate?

Most incoming students do not know people at Stanford and so do not choose their roommates. However, if you do find/choose someone you would like to room with in university housing, then you can request that Housing Assignments Office assign both of you to the same housing location. There is also a roommate-finding website.

What about housing for couples or families?

There are several options for on-campus couples housing-furnished or unfurnished. Please see the Housing Options page for information about housing for couples without children and students with children.

What's the bottom line? Is it comfortable to live on the graduate stipend?

Yes. People can live comfortably and still afford to travel both nationally and internationally. Several students have hobbies such as skiing or cycling that they can afford on the graduate student stipend/salary. (English PhD students get by on ~10K less!)

Activities in the local and surrounding areas

How do i get involved in departmental social events.

All ChemE grad students are welcome to participate on the social subcommittees of the graduate student-run ACTION Committee, as well as staff-student planned events such as the annual Holiday Party in December.

What do people do for fun?

The  Office of Student Engagement supports over 600 university-recognized, incredibly diverse student groups on campus.

There are various gyms on campus, along with many intramural sports and club sports. There are also athletic classes you can take for credit (kickboxing, Pilates, boot camp, yoga, etc) or simply for fun at the residence complexes. Other than sports, there are a plethora of cultural events in the arts, dance, music and other live performances on and off campus. San Jose is ~20 minutes away while San Francisco is ~45 minutes away by car. Both are also accessible by public transportation. If you prefer outdoor activities, hiking trails and extensive bicycle routes are minutes away and a few hours of driving can take you to Lake Tahoe, Yosemite, the northern California Redwoods, etc. while Santa Cruz and Monterrey are closer attractions.

What are the common attractions in the area surrounding the San Francisco Bay?

San Francisco has abundant theaters and cultural events, SFMOMA, Civic Center, Asian Museum, China Town, Fisherman's Wharf, Golden Gate Park (de Young Museum) and Golden Gate Bridge. Further north, you can visit Muir Woods redwood park, various marinas, Point Reyes National Seashore, etc., while further south you can visit Monterey Bay Aquarium, stroll beaches along the Pacific Ocean, go rock climbing and tour wineries in the Santa Cruz mountains.

How is the transportation system? How do you get around?

There are on-campus shuttles that also access the local train stations, local bus lines, CalTrain, BART and Muni. Many students have cars. Many do not. The majority of students also have bikes to get around on campus.

Are there intramural sports and sports clubs?

Yes to both. Intramural sports range from volleyball to soccer to billiards, and club sports range from triathlon to sailing to martial arts. This department fields several teams.

How are the gym facilities?

The Arrillaga Family Sports and Recreation Center is the primary gym for students. The facility is on Campus Drive right across from the track. At Arrillaga, you'll find squash courts, a climbing wall, basketball courts and a weight room with cardio-machines (ellipticals, treadmills, stationary bikes, etc.). Students also can take classes for physical activities such as martial arts (Arrillaga has a training room), fencing, yoga, etc.

Also, the recently opened Arrillaga Outdoor Education and Recreation Center (AOERC) is the newest recreational facility on campus. It's on Santa Teresa Street right next to Roble Field. AOERC features a fitness center, outdoor recreational pool, three indoor courts, academic classrooms, a climbing wall and an outdoor recreation center.

Stanford also has a great outdoor pool center and has several tennis courts spread across campus. It is not unusual for Stanford to host national track-and-field or ATP tour events, so you shouldn't be surprised to see some big names in sports strolling about on campus.

PhD in fermentation technology and metabolic engineering

Are you passionate about sustainable production of compounds and eager to contribute to much needed transition from fossil to renewable resources? We are looking for a mission-driven individual to join our team as a PhD candidate in Microbial Biotechnology, with a focus on fermentation technology and metabolic engineering. To turn microbial bioprocesses into viable alternatives for petrochemical based production, we must drastically improve their yields, rates and titers. This asks for revolutionary approaches! Non-canonical redox co-factors allow to approach theoretical maximum yields. To reach the theoretical yield, all electrons of the substrate should end up in the product, but electrons generally diffuse away via common redox co-factors such as NAD + . Using non-canonical redox cofactors, we want gain control over the electron flow from substate to product. To implement this approach in E. coli and yeast, we work together in a large consortium involving 7 PhD students and 2 Postdocs from different groups at Wageningen University, Free University Amsterdam and Delft University of Technology led by Prof. Ruud Weusthuis (Wageningen University). As PhD student you will be responsible for engineering strains to uncouple product formation from growth using non-canonical redox cofactors. This will be done in collaboration with other PhD students at WU and TUD in both yeast and E. coli. The major focus of the project will lie on in-depth screening and characterization of these strains in terms of for example yields and rates, but also strain stability and unexpected responses. For this you will combine advanced bioreactor cultivations, quantitative physiology and omics-analysis, to name a few. Your duties and responsibilities include:

  • design and implement genetic strategies in yeast and E. coli to separately control a non-canonical redox cofactor-based product pathway and growth;
  • perform bioreactor cultivations in batch, continuous and perfusion modes;
  • in-depth characterization of cellular responses and energetics of engineered strains;
  • improve production through bioprocess and metabolic engineering;
  • data collection, analysis, reporting, and presentation of experimental data.

Your qualities

You are curious and passionate about microbial bioproduction, possess great problem-solving and analytical skills, and are highly motivated to contribute to the sustainable production of chemicals. You also possess:

  • a successfully completed MSc degree in biotechnology, bioprocess engineering or another relevant field;

Working at TU/e

Phd on stochastic modelling and reliability assessment, job description.

The role of the distribution system operator (DSO) is changing from a passive maintainer of electricity networks to an active coordinator in the edge of the energy system. At the same time, customers become enabled to change from passive energy users to active participants in the local electricity system. Maintaining privacy and grid (cyber) security levels are part of the challenge to face.

A digital transformation at the edge of the distribution grid and at connected customers is unfolding. This opens possibilities for deploying distributed intelligence to enable smart network operations by collecting and processing data while preserving high levels of privacy for the customers. Exploring AI models for smart System Operation (AISO) is a collaboration project in which DSO Alliander will work together with the TU/e departments of Electrical Engineering (Electrical Energy Systems group) and Mathematics & Computer Science (Interconnected Resource-aware Intelligent Systems, and Stochastic Operations Research) to realize these innovations.

The project will be part of the TU/e’s Eindhoven AI Systems Institute (EAISI) and Eindhoven Institute for Renewable Energy Systems (EIRES) programs and therefore share, learn, and disseminate within the EAISI and EIRES communities and through the TU/e master programs Data Science and AI, Medical Engineering and AI Engineering Systems, and educational activities from the TU/e Electrical Energy Systems group and Math & Computer Science department.

If you are eager to work with a multi-disciplinary team focusing on AI-driven applications to support the DSO then this is the right position for you.

Job Description

The project focuses on synthetical data generation, AI-driven state estimation, stochastic modelling and reliability assessment, and grid-edge optimal solutions. These models will be combined with the AI-driven state estimations to enhance network observability and grid monitoring. Additionally, integration with the stochastic modelling and reliability assessment process will provide valuable insights into the impact of uncertainties on grid reliability. Finally, in conjunction with the developed edge intelligence, these advancements will enable optimal solutions for the electricity grids in the Netherlands and e.g. the rest of Europe, while maintaining user privacy.

The research results will be immediately utilized by Alliander for congestion estimation and flexibility procurement. To achieve this, it is part of this project that all the developed (AI-driven) models and algorithms are also implemented in production-ready open-source packages.

One of the four main research tracks (RTs) of AISO is as follows:

RT3: Stochastic modelling and reliability assessment

This research will perform a microscopic bottom-up approach to develop a thorough understanding of how various component affect overall network reliability. To this end, we will develop detailed agent-based probabilistic models to examine various vulnerability assessments, like the event of unacceptable voltage fluctuations, or degradation acceleration of temporary exceeding thermal limits, relevant to the daily operations of power systems. More specifically, the research will include:

  • Development of multivariate uncertainty models describing random user behavior (e.g. arrival patterns of electric vehicles and user preferences (either behavioral or utility-based)
  • Development of physical models of distribution grids, in particular for voltages: tractable linearized distflow models or less tractable but more realistic models
  • Integration of component degradation models along with the grid models
  • Development of stochastic models considering the uncertainties in load and weather forecasting
  • Integrate and validate solutions in the virtual grid environment.

See for the other 3 reseach tracks below:

PhD1 / RT1: Synthetical data generation using multivariate models . PhD2 / RT2: AI-driven state estimation and prediction . PhD4 / RT4: Grid-edge optimal solutions .

Service to a nation

Alum Kenneth Bible

Alum Kenneth Bible concludes a 40-year career in public service

Mechanical Engineering (master’s) alum Kenneth Bible has witnessed plenty of changes during his career. For example, when he started his professional career as a nuclear engineer at the former Charleston Naval Shipyard in 1985, the average starting salary for an entry level engineer was just over $27,400. Bible also had his own career transitions, which took him in some unexpected directions.

This past April, Bible retired from a nearly 40-year career. While he started in nuclear and mechanical engineering, he later made significant impacts on the nation’s information technology (IT) and cybersecurity.

Bible spent eight years at the Charleston Naval Shipyard before plans were announced to close the facility in 1993. Employees were offered opportunities to seek retraining, which included the University of South Carolina’s APOGEE, a distance education program designed to meet the needs of employed professionals.

Bible was hesitant about returning to school while working full time, but after successfully completing his first few classes, he applied and was accepted to the College of Engineering and Computing’s mechanical engineering master’s program. Each week he watched VHS tapes that were shipped to the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston and attended one live session via closed-circuit television. He graduated from the program in 1996.

“In the mid-1990s, this was pretty cutting edge. Going back after 10 years was a little intimidating, but the counselors and faculty in the program were very encouraging,” Bible says.

Mingling mechanical engineering with information technology

Bible’s graduate education was influential in his transition to the IT world. In 1994, he relocated to the Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center Atlantic (SPAWAR) in Charleston, now known as the Naval Information Warfare Center . While expected to work as a project engineer, his department heads wanted to utilize his knowledge in geospatial information systems (GIS), a technology he learned at the shipyard by mapping radioactive waste sites. But to work in GIS, he had to justify his master’s degree in mechanical engineering to his new supervisors.

“Because I got pulled into GIS technology that SPAWAR was building, I had to take a different look at my degree. My boss wanted to know how mechanical engineering would relate,” Bible says. “My advisor and the faculty at USC helped me figure out how to put these technologies together.”

Bible’s professors helped him develop an independent study surrounding the cause of premature clotting of dialysis bypass grafts. To tie this problem to mechanical engineering, Bible applied the university’s finite element analysis supercomputing system to analyze possible causes. He connected this to his work at SPAWAR by addressing the networking challenges in running these advanced computing technologies remotely between Columbia and Charleston.

“The university was flexible with my coursework and fostered curiosity and study across disciplines to learn how mechanical engineering applies when solving a medical problem,” Bible says.

Bible worked at SPAWAR for 16 years, which included a supervisory position in networking and communications and division head for the network engineering division. When the Navy began updating to a global network, Bible was asked to be the technology director for the system program office and later chief engineer, a role that took him from Charleston to the SPAWAR headquarters in Washington, D.C.

In the early part of my career, I aways looked for opportunities to have an impact and ensure our national institutions were performing the services the country needed.  - Kenneth Bible

Bible became the Marine Corps’ chief technology advisor at the Pentagon in 2013. Two years later, he was promoted to deputy chief information officer, where he developed broad policy guidance for IT, cybersecurity and communications infrastructure. In 2021, after 36 years of service to the Navy and Marine Corps, Bible craved a view of government from the civilian side. He accepted an opportunity at the Department of Homeland Security as chief information security officer, the final post of his career with the U.S. government.

Celebrating decades of service to a nation

In honor of his contributions to the nation, President Joe Biden awarded him Distinguished Rank in 2023. One of Bible’s most influential contributions was as chief engineer for the Navy’s Environmental Information Management System, a GIS-based program that supports environmental planning, natural resources management and encroachment issues. Bible built the program in 2000 alongside a team of ship drivers, lawyers, environmental groups, IT personnel and biologists in response to dolphins stranded in the Bahamas.

“The Navy is a huge steward of sea and ocean research, and this triggered an enormous environmental push,” he says. “A tremendous team came together that I was fortunate to lead, creating a system that has lasted 24 years.”

Bible was also instrumental in the response to the Solar Winds incident in 2020, one of the largest incursions into the U.S. government’s IT infrastructure. After Russian hackers breached SolarWinds software by injecting malware and affecting thousands of customers, including the U.S. government, Bible was involved in the Department of Homeland Security’s response. This experience formed much of his strategy for the department’s risk management and cybersecurity. Bible also developed technological changes to the national defense strategy, such as Advana, the Department of Defense’s authoritative source for audit and business data analytics, and guided the production of the first fully accredited secure software development pipelines.

“In the early part of my career, I aways looked for opportunities to have an impact and ensure our national institutions were performing the services the country needed. It was a blessing to have that many chances to make a mark,” Bible says.

Looking to the future

Bible continues to make an impact even in his retirement. He is a panelist for the Walker Institute of International and Area Studies, USC's center for global research and outreach.

“Ken is one of the most well-versed people in the cyber and AI arena in the nation. He is always in demand, but he has never said no to helping me,” says Jodi Salter, program manager for the Walker Institute.

Salter is also founding board chair for South Carolina Women in Technology and director of SC Cyber. Bible mentors’ students and assists these organizations in achieving their missions.

“Ken is the biggest champion of growing the number of women in the cyber area,” Salter says. “He has developed a relationship with every student I’ve connected him with. He’s a giver, a civil servant at heart and always will be.”

Bible admits that mechanical engineering has evolved and become more specialized. While technological advances are undoubtedly advantageous, he cautions students against specializing too early in their education. Instead, he recommends a broad engineering degree focusing on large categories of study that can be applied to any problem.

“Be aware that the job you will ultimately end up in hasn’t been invented yet,” Bible says. “An engineering education at the undergraduate level is about understanding methods and learning how to break large problems into smaller things you can solve. Build curiosity and be willing to research something you don’t know. You may be surprised where that leads.”

Challenge the conventional. Create the exceptional. No Limits.

engineering phd careers

With the launch of its new graduate degree programs in aerospace engineering, Florida A&M University (FAMU) will make a big splash in STEM education. Beginning fall 2025, students can enroll in a master’s degree and a Ph.D. program through the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering. The joint institution shared with Florida State University (FSU) is the only shared engineering school in the country. This effort aligns with FAMU’s larger goal of improving STEM education. The joint institution, located in Innovation Park, will leverage its existing faculty and resources to support these new programs.

Graduate Programs Overview

Students enrolled in the new graduate programs will receive an in-depth education in aerospace engineering . The studies will pay close attention to practical experience. According to FAMU-FSU College of Engineering Dean Suvranu De, the goal of these programs is to better prepare students for careers in aerospace engineering. The curricula will be far better able to handle this than a mechanical engineering degree with an aerospace specialization.

The Tallahassee Democrat  reports  that Suvranu De said, “With these particular master’s and Ph.D. programs, students are able to get their degree while being more qualified to get jobs in the aerospace engineering sector versus having a degree in mechanical engineering and only having done some aerospace work,” during a virtual Academic and Student Affairs Committee meeting.

The master’s program will focus on experiential learning and industry collaboration and require students to complete 30 credits. The doctoral program, emphasizing research excellence, will require 48 credits for those with a master’s degree or 60 credits for those entering with a bachelor’s degree.
