In November 2019, 46 IMSA Russian 2 and 3 students participated in the 38th Annual National Russian Essay Contest, sponsored by the American Council of Teachers of Russian . Students wrote for two hours in Russian on the topic "Work, profession, and career in my life." 1,333 students nationwide entered the contest this year.

The ACTR National Post-Secondary Russian Contest began in 1999. Today, more than 1,000 students from over 50 institutions compete every year. Participants in the contest have exactly one hour to write an essay on a topic that is unknown until the time of writing.
