Wolf Movie Review: Engaging psychological drama derailed by a shaky third act

Rating: ( 3 / 5).

Wolf , directed by Shaji Azeez and coming from the imagination of GR Indugopan, one of contemporary Malayalam literature's most gifted storytellers, has enough factors that make for a riveting mind game. Like Love and Irul before it, a house becomes a playground for intense characters. For a large part of its runtime, its three principal actors have us in a vice-like grip until a baffling climax brings everything down. Fortunately, Wolf is no Irul (it doesn't have a casting problem like the latter), but both films have a shaky third act that undoes everything that came before.

Director: Shaji Azeez

Cast: Arjun Ashokan, Samyuktha Menon, Irshad

Streaming on: Zee5

Based on Indugopan's short story, Chennaya , Wolf opens with Sanjay (Arjun Ashokan) on the way to see his would-be, Asha (Samyuktha Menon), hoping to surprise her. When she opens the door, she is surprised alright -- and visibly agitated too. The first half belongs entirely to Arjun and Samyuktha, who effectively deliver one anxiety-inducing moment after another. It soon becomes apparent that these two are not a match made in heaven. She doesn't want him there for reasons valid from her point of view -- and, of course, us. Every minute he spends at her home makes us more uncomfortable.

Asha has a conservative mother who is not at home at the moment, and the daughter worries that Sanjay's presence at this hour will turn her into gossip fodder. (The suspicious mom sounds like the male version of another Indugopan creation, Amminipilla , from his brilliant short story, Amminipilla Vettu Case ). Besides, Asha sees Sanjay's short-temper and rude manners -- even to his close female friends -- as good enough reasons for not wanting him as her better half. She expresses her doubts about spending the rest of her life with him. He gets increasingly irritated and is desperate to ensure that he wouldn't be this way after their marriage. But we also get the sense that Asha is hiding something from us. To make matters worse, the PM announces the lockdown on the same night. Her mother won't get home on time, and since Sanjay's residence is hours away, the cops stationed outside her home (Shine Tom Chacko, Jaffer Idukki) forbid him from travel.

The film only gets more intense after a third character, Joe (Irshad), enters the picture; but our amusement lasts only up to a certain point. In an interview with us, Shaji Azeez called the third character a 'surprise' and, with that in mind, I won't describe who this man is and why he is in the story. But it would be safe to say that Shaji and Indugopan use him to launch a discourse on the intricacies of the male-female dynamics, the deeply entrenched patriarchal mindset of Indian men, a woman's agency when it comes to her personal choices, and how someone's 'image' on social media doesn't necessarily tell you who they really are. Though Sanjay's character traits are clear to us, we later realise that the other two characters are not exactly what they led us to believe initially.

For the most part, the film gives us the effect of watching a tightly constructed play, aided by appropriate staging and camera movements. It's fun to see the three characters slowly unravelling their true selves. The interplay reminded me of the Mike Nichols film Closer . However, Wolf has a problem: the inconsistency in character development. The primary issue here is the contradictory behaviour of the characters -- none of them stays faithful to their arc. They sometimes exhibit behaviour that makes one wonder if one person is trying to be three different people. They seem not sure of themselves but like to make you believe that they are.

When the film ends, all three characters undergo unconvincing character transformations, making one feel cheated. (The climax reminded me of a popular Shaji Kailas film scripted by Ranjith. You may remember the title once you see Wolf .) After all those long, colourful, and occasionally insightful dialogues, you wonder why a couple of characters decided to take a different route in the end. And I'm still trying to make sense of the casting of Shine Tom Chacko and Jaffer Idukki as those policemen. Were they necessary? Perhaps Wolf had the potential to be another debate-worthy film like Ishq or even The Great Indian Kitchen , but that ending...

Wolf (2021) – Malayalam Movie Review

wolf malayalam movie review

It’s a sign of how high the average standard of Malayalam cinema is these days that it’s no longer easy to get noticed with just an interesting premise. If the execution as a whole falters somewhere, there is a probability the film will pass unnoticed. Wolf is not a bad movie per se, but an intriguing first half is slightly let down towards the end with a bit of a cop-out of an ending.

Sanjay (Arjun Asokan) makes an unexpected trip to visit his fiancé on her birthday night. It’s late by the time he reaches and Asha (Samyuktha Menon) doesn’t seem particularly pleased to have him show up at her doorstep. Considering her family is not around, it is the first sign that all is not well in their world that they can’t even make use of the opportunity for a clandestine tryst. Arjun decides to leave, but the sudden declaration of the first nationwide lockdown, owing to the COVID-19 situation, by the Prime Minister and the presence of cops just outside the gate means that he is stuck. Asha gets increasingly perturbed, much to Sanjay’s displeasure. After all, they are supposed to be married in a few weeks, so such antagonism is a problem. Slowly, though, facets of Sanjay’s personality comes out which apparently Asha has deep umbrage to, including his manner of speech when angry and the way he treats his close friend, a girl. There is, for sure, a casual misogyny about certain aspects of Sanjay’s behavior, but he is presented as someone who does care for her. They manage to spend the night under the same roof eventually, though of course in different rooms. But the next day, there are some shocking surprises in store for Sanjay. And through a mentally tortuous process of discovery, for Asha too. Will their impending betrothal even survive the lockdown, let alone the time to the wedding date?

wolf malayalam movie review

While I wouldn’t want to give out spoilers, I was pleasantly surprised at the gravitas of Irshad’s screen presence in the film. For long an oft-ignored supporting character, here he does get a chance to shine on screen and is probably the best performance of the lot.  Shows how different an actor’s trajectory could have been with the right kind of role and script. The story revolves mostly within the house and the two cops posted outside (Shine Tom Chacko and Jaffer Idukki). As befits a story which has the lockdown as a major plot pivot, the sense of claustrophobic hopelessness of being stuck in the wrong place at the wrong time hits home. As does the sense of never really knowing a person. None of the three main characters are blameless in the way they treat the others, but the cloying sense of tension as Sanjay realizes his planned life slipping away from him as well as Asha’s sudden realization of her circumstance is impressively portrayed.

The movie perhaps lost its way a bit towards the end. Asha, despite being particular about exposing the inherent patriarchal attitude of Sanjay, still ends up having to be drawn out of a hole by one of the men. Sanjay’s casual misogyny includes him suggesting that he cannot marry a woman who wears shorts, but he does get to redeem himself a bit. To say anymore would be a big spoiler, but suffice to say the film does a good enough job of gripping its audience in limited settings for long enough for this one to be worth a watch.

Wolf movie review: A confused lockdown thriller

The plot of Wolf displayed so much potential in the first half talking about toxic masculinity and preconceptions, but it soon falters as it takes a preachy route and ends up as a confounding mess

Wolf movie review: A confused lockdown thriller

  • Sanjith Sidhardhan

Last Updated: 12.00 AM, Apr 20, 2021

When Malayalam director Shaji M Azeez and his team would have started shooting Wolf, which dropped on ZEE5 on April 18, they must have thought they would have had a relevant subject at hand. In fact, they did too. The movie, based on GR Indugopan's story, is set on the night before and the day the unexpected nationwide lockdown comes into force in the country. It was shot right after the lockdown rules were eased and hence the minimal cast, which was also used effectively for most parts of the movie.

The film starts off by introducing a hot-headed Kochi youth Sanjay (Arjun Ashokan) who after a visit to Kottarakara, decides to surprise his fiancée Asha (Samyuktha Menon) in Parippally. However, when he arrives at her house, they learn that a lockdown is declared, rendering Sanjay unable to travel back to Kochi. The two, who are set to get married in two weeks, learn more about each other in the course of the night and next day.

The plot of Wolf displayed so much potential in the first half talking about toxic masculinity and preconceptions, but it soon falters as it takes a preachy route and ends up as a confusing mess. How a couple bonds so quickly, even when posed with the circumstances in the film, is unconvincing and even more are the character arcs of Samyuktha Menon and Irshad, whose intentions confuse those on-screen and off it as well.

image_item

The trio's performances build up the tension in the first half. Actors Shine Tom Chacko and Jaffer Idukki aren't used well either. What starts out as an insightful relationship thriller about man-woman dynamics soon becomes an inconsistent, self-indulgent piece about a hunter.

Verdict: Wolf's first half shows potential but the movie falters due to its inconsistent character development and self-indulgent writing in the second half.

'Mandakini' Movie Review: A slow starter powered by the mass performance of female stars

Princy Alexander

After the award-winning 'Thinkalazhcha Nishchayam', films with marriages as a leitmotif are no longer hard to come by. Vinod Leela's 'Mandakini', starring Althaf Salim and Anarkali Marikar, is also centred on a marriage. The film begins with Aromal, the bridegroom, sharing a 'small' concern with the god on the day of his wedding. This monologue sets the tone of the comedy film, scripted by Shiju Bhaskar and Shalu.  Althaf Salim of 'Pachuvum Athbuthavilakkum' fame gets his first lead role in the movie. Aromal is raised by his single mom Rajalakshmi, who owns a driving school. His newlywed wife, Ambili, was a student at Rajalakshmi's driving school. The film follows what happens on the night of the wedding.  The first half focuses mostly on the wedding night, where the bridegroom's family is seen indulging in too much alcohol and some fun banter. Though the humour works in bits and parts, there is a lag in the narrative initially, which is spent mostly on establishing the mood of the wedding night.

However, the twist at the interval and the humour in the second half add more colour to the film, adding pace to the storytelling. Althaf does a good job playing Aromal, though it feels like an extension of his character roles. Anarkali Marikar and Ganapathi Poduval deliver excellent performances. The banter between Vineeth Thattil David and Kutty Akhil is the highlight of the film. Actor Saritha Kukku, who was part of films like 'Bharatha Circus' and 'Aabhaasam', puts up a brilliant performance as Aromal's mother. She gets some mass moments that can give even some heroes a run for their money. Malayalam cinema has seen the absence of prominent female characters in recent hits, but 'Mandakini', without much theatrics or drama, ensures women get some deserving space onscreen. The film, though infused with humour, also addresses the complexities that arise in marriages if one is unable to be transparent with their partner. The songs composed by Bibin Ashok blend soothingly well with the storyline, which leaves you with a smile at the end.

Brad Pitt & George Clooney Movie Wolfs: Release Date, Cast, Plot, Potential Sequel & Everything We Know!

Brad pitt and george clooney were last seen in the 2008 spy spoof "burn after reading.".

wolf malayalam movie review

Our eyeballs are in for a treat as Brad Pitt and George Clooney reunite after 16 years for the upcoming action comedy “Wolfs.” The two biggest stars in the world were last seen in the 2008 crime comedy “Burn After Reading.” The spy spoof, which grossed over $163 million from its $37 million budget, was an entertaining ride alongside zany characters.

The dynamic duo is back with a teaser trailer for the action comedy Wolfs from Columbia Pictures and Apple Original Films. In the 39-second trailer, a visibly annoyed George Clooney sits behind the wheel while a fidgety Pitt struggles to sit still, moving the visor and opening the glove box, prompting Clooney to slam the door shut.

Here’s everything we know about the upcoming movie as we await the release of perhaps a more extended trailer dropping on May 29

wolf malayalam movie review

When Will Wolfs be released?

According to GQ, the movie will be released in theaters worldwide on September 20, 2024 and will subsequently stream on Apple. During an interview with Deadline in 2023, Clooney revealed that he and Brad Pitt had fought to release the movie in theaters before it dropped on streamers.

Clooney said, “Brad and I made the deal to do that movie, and we gave the money back to make sure that we had a theatrical release. At the time, that wasn’t as popular an opinion as it has become in the last year and a half now.”

What do we know about the cast in Wolfs ?

The movie also stars Amy Ryan, Austin Abrams and Poorna Jagannathan.

What is Wolfs about”

The movie follows two lone fixers, George Clooney and Brad Pitt, assigned to cover up a high-profile crime.” Spider-Man” franchise director Jon Watts created and directed the movie.

Will there be a Wolfs sequel?

George Clooney told Deadline they were “already talking about a sequel for this film.”

George Clooney added, “It was a great shoot, and Jon is an extraordinarily talented guy who’s also really joyful. He loves what he does. We had a blast doing it, and we’ve seen it. It’s an off the charts great film and it’s fun to work with Brad again. We had a really good time.
