సుప్రీం హీరో సాయి ధరమ్ తేజ్ హీరోగా సంయుక్త మీనన్ హీరోయిన్ గా కార్తీక్ దండు తెరకెక్కించిన ఇంట్రెస్టింగ్ థ్రిల్లర్ “విరూపాక్ష”. కాగా ఈ చిత్రం ఈ రోజే విడుదల అయింది. మరి ప్రేక్షకులును ఏ మేరకు మెప్పించిందో సమీక్షలోకి వెళ్లి తెలుసుకుందాం !

  రుద్రవనం అనే ఊరిలో క్షుద్రపూజలు చేస్తున్నారని ఒక కుటుంబాన్ని ఆ ఊరి ప్రజలు చంపేస్తారు. ఆ జంట కుమారుడ్ని ఆ ఊరు నుంచి పంపించేస్తారు. ఇది జరిగిన పుష్కర కాలం తర్వాత సూర్య (సాయి ధరమ్ తేజ్) తన తల్లితో పాటు రుద్రవనం ఊరు వస్తాడు. రుద్రవనం తన తల్లి ఊరు కావడంతో.. ఆ ఊరుతో సూర్యకి బంధం ఉంటుంది. ఈ క్రమంలో జరిగిన నాటకీయ పరిణామాల మధ్య నందిని (సంయుక్త మీనన్)తో సూర్య, ప్రేమలో పడతాడు. ఆమె ప్రేమ పొందటం కోసం సూర్య ప్రయత్నం చేస్తూ ఉంటాడు. అయితే, మరోవైపు రుద్రవనం గ్రామంలో వరుసగా మనుషులు చనిపోతూ ఉంటారు. దాంతో ఆ ఊరు మొత్తం భయంతో వణికపోతుంది. అసలు ఎందుకు మనుషులు చనిపోతున్నారు ?, వారి చావుల వెనుక ఉన్న రహస్యం ఏమిటి ?, ఈ మిస్టరీని సూర్య ఎలా సాల్వ్ చేశాడు ?, చివరకు ఏం జరిగింది? అనేది మిగిలిన కథ.

ప్లస్ పాయింట్స్ :

ఈ సినిమాకి బిగ్గెస్ట్ ప్లస్ పాయింట్ దర్శకుడు కార్తీక్ దండు రాసుకున్న కథ. పైగా కార్తీక్ దండు ఈ కథను తెరపై అద్భుతంగా చూపించాడు. నటీనటుల విషయానికి వస్తే.. సాయి ధరమ్ తేజ్ పాత్ర చాలా బాగుంది. సూర్య పాత్రలో సాయి ధరమ్ తేజ్ కూడా చాలా చక్కగా నటించాడు. కొన్ని థ్రిల్లర్ సన్నివేశాల్లో తన రియలిస్టిక్ యాక్టింగ్ తో ఆకట్టుకున్నాడు. ముఖ్యంగా సెకెండ్ హాఫ్ లో సాగే కొన్ని యాక్షన్ సన్నివేశాల్లో అలాగే ప్రీ క్లైమాక్స్ లో వచ్చే కీలక సీన్స్ లో కూడా సాయి తేజ్ నటన చాలా బాగుంది.

ఈ సినిమాలో మరో ప్రధాన పాత్రలో నటించిన హీరోయిన్ సంయుక్త మీనన్ కూడా తన నటనతో ఆకట్టుకుంది. కొన్ని హారర్ సన్నివేశాల్లో ఆమె తన పెర్ఫార్మెన్స్ తో మెప్పించింది. మరో కీలక పాత్రలో నటించిన రాజీవ్ కనకాల బాగా నటించారు. అలాగే బ్రహ్మాజీ, అజయ్, సునీల్ మరియు మిగిలిన నటీనటులు కూడా తమ పాత్రల్లో మెప్పించారు. దర్శకుడు కార్తీక్ కథలో ఉన్న సస్పెన్స్ ని బాగా మెయింటైన్ చేసాడు. పైగా హారర్ సీన్స్ ను కూడా చాలా బాగా పిక్చరైజ్ చేసాడు.

అన్నిటికీ మించి పీరియాడిక్ యాక్షన్ థ్రిల్లర్ నేపథ్యంలో రూపొందంటమే ఈ సినిమాకు ప్రధాన బలం. అలాగే దర్శకుడు రాసుకున్న కొన్ని కీలక సన్నివేశాలు కూడా ప్రత్యేక ఆకర్షణగా నిలుస్తాయి. ఈ సినిమాలోని విజువల్స్ అండ్ సౌండ్ ఎఫెక్ట్స్ చాలా బాగున్నాయి. ప్రీ ఇంటర్వెల్ నుంచి కథ ఊహించని టర్న్ తీసుకోవడం, మెయిన్ విలన్ ను ఎవరూ ఊహించని విధంగా డిజైన్ చేయడం బాగుంది.

మైనస్ పాయింట్స్ :

ఈ సినిమాలోని ప్రేమ సన్నివేశాలు ఇంకా బెటర్ గా ఉండి ఉంటే బాగుండేది. చాలా లాజికల్ పాయింట్స్ ని పర్ఫెక్ట్ గా రివీల్ చేసిన డైరెక్టర్ కొన్నిటిని మాత్రం ఇన్ డైరెక్ట్ గా చాలా సింపుల్ గా చూపించి వదిలేశాడు. అలాగే కీలకమైన సన్నివేశాలను బాగా రాసుకున్నప్పటికీ.. మిగిలిన సన్నివేశాల్లో ముఖ్యంగా సెకండ్ హాఫ్ మధ్యలో వచ్చే కొన్ని సీన్స్ ను ఇంకా ఆసక్తికరంగా మలిచి ఉంటే బాగుండేది.

సినిమా చూస్తున్నంతసేపు తర్వాత ఏం జరుగుతుంది ?, హీరో ఆ చావుల రహస్యాన్ని ఎలా కనిపెడతాడు?, ఆ ఊరుని ఎలా కాపాడతాడు ? అనే ఉత్కంఠ ప్రేక్షకుల్లో బాగానే కలిగించారు. కాకపోతే.. క్లైమాక్స్ కి ముందు వచ్చే సీక్వెన్స్ లను ఇంకా బెటర్ గా చూపించే స్కోప్ ఉంది. అలాగే ఇంకా క్లారిటీగా చూపించి ఉండాల్సింది. అదే విధంగా హీరోయిన్ పాత్రకు – రాజీవ్ కనకాల పాత్రకు మధ్య ట్రాక్ ను కూడా ఇంకా బలంగా రాసుకోవాల్సింది.

సాంకేతిక విభాగం :

మంచి కథా నేపధ్యాన్ని తీసుకోవడంలో సక్సెస్ అయిన దర్శకుడు కార్తీక్ దండు, కొన్ని చోట్ల ఉత్కంఠభరితమైన సీన్స్ రాసుకోవడంలో మాత్రం కొన్ని చోట్ల తడబడ్డాడు. కానీ ఆయన రూపొందించిన సన్నివేశాలు ఆకట్టుకున్నాయి. సంగీత దర్శకుడు అజనీష్ లోక్‌నాథ్ సంగీతం బాగుంది. సినిమాటోగ్రఫీ వర్క్ సినిమాకే ప్రత్యేక ఆకర్షణగా నిలుస్తోంది. ఎడిటింగ్ కూడా బాగుంది. ఇక దర్శకుడు ఆలోచనను నమ్మి ఇలాంటి వైవిధ్యమైన చిత్రాన్ని తెలుగు ప్రేక్షకులకు అందించింనందుకు నిర్మాతను అభినందించాలి. నిర్మాత బివిఎస్ఎన్ ప్రసాద్ నిర్మాణ విలువులు కూడా చాలా బాగున్నాయి.

‘విరూపాక్ష’ అంటూ వచ్చిన ఈ మిస్టరీ యాక్షన్ థ్రిల్లర్ ప్రేక్షకులకు కొత్త అనుభూతిని ఇస్తోంది. ముఖ్యంగా దర్శకుడు కార్తీక్ రాసిన కథ, హారర్ సన్నివేశాలు, కొన్ని థ్రిల్లింగ్ ఎలిమెంట్స్ అలాగే టేకింగ్ సినిమాలో ఆకట్టుకునే అంశాలు. అయితే, కొన్ని సీన్స్ సినిమాటిక్ గా అండ్ స్లోగా సాగడం వంటి అంశాలు బలహీనతలుగా నిలుస్తాయి. ఓవరాల్ గా భిన్నమైన, కొత్త తరహా థ్రిల్లర్ చిత్రాలని ఇష్టపడేవారికి ఈ సినిమా చాలా బాగా నచ్చుతుంది. అలాగే మిగిలిన వర్గాల ప్రేక్షకులను కూడా ఈ చిత్రం ఆకట్టుకుంటుంది.

తెలుగులో రూపుదిద్దుకున్న మ‌రో పాన్ ఇండియా సినిమాగా విడుద‌ల‌కి ముందే ప్రేక్ష‌కుల్లో ఆస‌క్తిని రేకెత్తించిన చిత్రం.. ‘విరూపాక్ష‌’ (Virupaksha). అన్ని భాష‌ల్లోనూ ఒకేసారి విడుద‌ల కాక‌పోయినా.. మంచి ప్ర‌చారాన్ని మాత్రం సొంతం చేసుకొంది. సాయిధ‌ర‌మ్ తేజ్ (Saidharam Tej) ప్ర‌మాదం నుంచి కోలుకున్నాక చేసిన సినిమా ఇది. అగ్ర ద‌ర్శ‌కుడు సుకుమార్ స్క్రీన్‌ప్లే స‌మ‌కూర్చగా.. ఆయ‌న శిష్యుడు కార్తీక్ వ‌ర్మ దీన్ని తెర‌కెక్కించారు. ప్ర‌చార చిత్రాల‌తో ఆస‌క్తిని రేకెత్తించిన ఈ సినిమా ఎలా ఉందో తెలుసుకునే ముందు క‌థేమిటో చూద్దాం (Virupaksha Review).

క‌థేంటంటే: రుద్ర‌వ‌నం అనే ఊరి చుట్టూ సాగే క‌థ ఇది. చేత‌బ‌డి చేస్తూ చిన్న పిల్ల‌ల మ‌ర‌ణానికి కార‌ణ‌మ‌వుతున్నారంటూ ఆ ఊరికి వ‌చ్చిన ఓ జంట‌ని స‌జీవ ద‌హ‌నం చేస్తారు గ్రామ‌స్థులు. వారు మంట‌ల్లో కాలిపోతూ పుష్క‌ర కాలం త‌ర్వాత ఈ ఊరు వ‌ల్ల‌కాడు అయిపోతుంద‌ని శపిస్తారు. అందుకు త‌గ్గ‌ట్టే స‌రిగ్గా ప‌న్నెండేళ్ల త‌ర్వాత ఆ ఊళ్లో వ‌రుసగా మ‌ర‌ణాలు సంభ‌విస్తాయి. దాంతో గ్రామాన్ని అష్ట‌దిగ్బంధ‌నం చేయాల‌ని తీర్మానిస్తారు పెద్ద‌లు. కొన్ని రోజుల‌పాటు అక్కడి జ‌నాలు బ‌య‌టికి వెళ్ల‌డానికి కానీ.. కొత్త‌వాళ్లు ఊళ్లోకి రావ‌డానికి కానీ అవ‌కాశం లేకుండా చేస్తారు. అయినా స‌రే మ‌ర‌ణాలు మాత్రం ఆగ‌వు. త‌న త‌ల్లితో క‌లిసి బంధువుల ఇంటికి వ‌చ్చిన సూర్య (సాయిధ‌ర‌మ్ తేజ్‌) (Saidharam Tej) తిరిగి వెళ్లే అవ‌కాశం ఉన్నా.. తాను మ‌న‌సుప‌డిన నందిని (సంయుక్త‌) (Samyuktha) ప్రాణాల్ని కాపాడ‌టం కోసం మ‌ళ్లీ ఊళ్లోకి తిరిగొస్తాడు. ఈ చావుల వెన‌కున్న ర‌హ‌స్యాల్ని ఛేదించ‌డానికి న‌డుం బిగిస్తాడు. మ‌రి సూర్య త‌ను అనుకున్నది చేశాడా? ఈ వ‌రుస చావుల వెన‌క ఎవ‌రున్నార‌నేది మిగ‌తా క‌థ. (Virupaksha Review).

ఎలా ఉందంటే: 1979లో మొద‌లై 90 ద‌శ‌కం నేప‌థ్యంలో సాగే క‌థ ఇది. మిస్టిక్ థ్రిల్ల‌ర్‌గా ప్ర‌చార‌మైన ఈ సినిమా.. తాంత్రిక శ‌క్తులు, ఆత్మ‌లు అంటూ చాలాచోట్ల భ‌య‌పెడుతూనే థ్రిల్‌కి గురిచేస్తుంది. ఊరి శివార్లలో పాడుబ‌డిన ఓ ఇల్లు.. అక్క‌డ దాగిన ర‌హ‌స్యం అంటూ ద‌ర్శ‌కుడు స‌గ‌టు థ్రిల్ల‌ర్ సినిమాల‌కి త‌గిన సెటప్‌నే ఎంచుకున్న‌ప్ప‌టికీ  గత చిత్రాల‌కి భిన్నంగా ఓ కొత్త నేప‌థ్యంతో కూడిన క‌థ‌ని రాసుకున్నాడు. ఆ క‌థ‌కి అంతే బ‌ల‌మైన స్క్రీన్‌ప్లే తోడ‌వడంతో సినిమా అడుగ‌డుగునా ఆస‌క్తిని రేకెత్తిస్తూ సాగుతుంది. దంప‌తుల తాంత్రిక పూజ‌ల‌తో క‌థ మొద‌ల‌వుతుంది. క‌థానాయ‌కుడు రుద్ర‌వ‌నంలోకి అడుగుపెట్ట‌డం నుంచి ప్రేమ‌క‌థ‌తో సినిమా మొద‌లైనా.. ఎవ‌రూ ఊహించ‌ని రీతిలో మ‌ర‌ణాల నుంచే ఆస‌క్తి మొద‌ల‌వుతుంది. ప్ర‌తి మ‌ర‌ణం వెన‌క ఓ అంతుచిక్క‌ని కార‌ణం. ఆ మ‌ర‌ణాలు సంభ‌వించే విధానం కూడా ప్రేక్షకుల్ని ఉత్కంఠకు గురిచేస్తాయి. అస‌లు ఎవ‌రు కార‌ణ‌మో తెలుసుకోవాల‌నే ఆసక్తి రేకెత్తించ‌డంలో ద‌ర్శ‌కుడు స‌ఫ‌ల‌మ‌య్యాడు. రైల్వే స్టేష‌న్ ద‌గ్గ‌ర స‌న్నివేశాలు, క‌థానాయ‌కుడి సోద‌రి ఆత్మ‌హ‌త్య నేప‌థ్యంలోని స‌న్నివేశాల్ని డిజైన్ చేసిన విధానం చాలా బాగుంది. ప్ర‌థ‌మార్ధం వర‌కూ వ‌రుస‌గా నాలుగు మ‌ర‌ణాలు చోటు చేసుకోవ‌డం.. సినిమాలో కీలక‌మైన మ‌రో పాత్ర మ‌ర‌ణం నేప‌థ్యంతో విరామ స‌న్నివేశాల్ని తీర్చిదిద్దారు. ద్వితీయార్ధంలోనే అస‌లు క‌థంతా. నాయ‌కానాయిక‌ల పాత్ర‌లకి కూడా ద్వితీయార్ధంలోనే ప్రాధాన్యం ల‌భించింది. ర‌హ‌స్యాన్ని ఛేదించే క్ర‌మంలో కథానాయకుడికి అడుగ‌డుగునా స‌వాళ్లు ఎదుర‌వుతుంటాయి. వాటిని అధిగ‌మిస్తూ ముందుకెళ్లే క్ర‌మంలో ర‌హ‌స్యాలు ఒకొక్క‌టిగా వెలుగులోకి రావ‌డంతో సినిమా ఆస‌క్తిక‌రంగా సాగుతుంది. భైర‌వ ఎక్క‌డున్నాడో క‌నిపెట్టే క్ర‌మం.. అస‌లు ఊరి జ‌నాల ప్రాణాల‌న్నీ ఎవ‌రి గుప్పిట్లో ఉన్నాయో తెలియ‌డం వంటి స‌న్నివేశాలు సినిమాకి కీల‌కం. ద‌ర్శ‌కుడికి సాంకేతిక బృందాలు చ‌క్కటి స‌హ‌కారం అందించాయి. అక్క‌డ‌క్క‌డా సాగ‌దీత‌గా అనిపించినా మొత్తంగా సినిమా ప్రేక్ష‌కుల‌కి ఓ మంచి థ్రిల్ల‌ర్‌ని చూసిన అనుభూతి క‌లుగుతుంది. ఎవ‌రెలా చేశారంటే: సాయిధ‌ర‌మ్ తేజ్ క‌నిపించిన విధానం బాగుంది. ప్ర‌థ‌మార్ధంతో పోలిస్తే ద్వితీయార్ధంలోనే ఆయ‌న పాత్ర‌కి ప్రాధాన్యం ద‌క్కింది. వీరోచిత విన్యాసాలు చేయ‌క‌పోయినా.. ర‌హ‌స్యాన్ని ఛేదించేందుకు ధైర్యంగా ముందుకెళ్లే యువ‌కుడిగా చ‌క్క‌టి అభిన‌యం ప్ర‌ద‌ర్శించాడు. ఆయ‌న పాత్ర‌, న‌ట‌న‌లో సహ‌జ‌త్వం క‌నిపిస్తుంది. యాక్ష‌న్ స‌న్నివేశాల్లోనూ ఆయ‌న ప‌నితీరు మెప్పిస్తుంది. సంయుక్త న‌ట‌న‌లో మ‌రో కోణాన్ని ఆవిష్క‌రించే చిత్ర‌మిది. ప్ర‌థ‌మార్ధంలో ఎంత అందంగా క‌నిపిస్తుందో.. ద్వితీయార్ధంలో అంత‌గా థ్రిల్‌కి గురిచేస్తుంది. ప్రతి దశలో ఓ కొత్త పాత్ర క‌థ‌లోకి వ‌స్తూ ప్ర‌భావం చూపించ‌డం ఈ సినిమా ప్ర‌త్యేక‌త‌. అజ‌య్‌, రాజీవ్ క‌న‌కాల‌, బ్ర‌హ్మాజీ, సాయిచంద్‌, సునీల్, శ్యామ‌ల త‌దిత‌రుల పాత్ర‌ల‌కి మంచి ప్రాధాన్యం ద‌క్కింది. సునీల్ పాత్ర‌లో ప్రతినాయక ఛాయ‌లు క‌నిపించినా ఆ పాత్రని పూర్తిస్థాయిలో తీర్చిదిద్ద‌లేదు. ర‌వికృష్ణ‌, సోనియా సింగ్‌... ఇలా మ‌రికొంద‌రు పోషించిన‌వి చిన్న పాత్ర‌లే అయినా అవి సినిమాపై బల‌మైన ప్ర‌భావాన్ని చూపించాయి. సాంకేతికంగా సినిమా ఉన్నతంగా ఉంది.  శ్యామ్ ద‌త్ కెమెరా అద్భుత‌మే చేసింది. రాత్రిళ్లు సాగే స‌న్నివేశాల్ని, రుద్ర‌వ‌నాన్ని ఆయ‌న చూపించిన విధానం చాలా బాగుంది. ప్రొడ‌క్ష‌న్ డిజైన‌ర్ శ్రీనాగేంద్ర ప‌నిత‌నం మ‌రో ఎత్తు. ఆయ‌న త‌న క‌ళా ప్ర‌తిభ‌తో రుద్ర‌వ‌నంకి ప్రాణం పోశారు. అజ‌నీష్ లోక్‌నాథ్ సంగీతం చిత్రానికి ప్ర‌ధాన‌బ‌లం. పాట‌ల కంటే కూడా నేప‌థ్య సంగీతంపై ఆయ‌న బ‌ల‌మైన ప్ర‌భావం చూపించారు. రాసుకున్న క‌థ‌, ఆ క‌థ‌పై అంతే ప‌ట్టుని ప్ర‌దర్శిస్తూ తెర‌పైకి తీసుకొచ్చిన విధానం ద‌ర్శ‌కుడి ప్ర‌తిభ‌కి అద్దం ప‌డుతుంది. సుకుమార్ స్క్రీన్‌ప్లే సినిమాకి ప్ర‌ధాన‌బ‌లం. ఆరంభం నుంచి చివ‌రి వ‌ర‌కూ  క‌థ‌లో మ‌లుపులు ఆస‌క్తిని రేకెత్తిస్తాయి. నిర్మాణం ఉన్న‌తంగా ఉంది. విజువ‌ల్ ఎఫెక్ట్స్‌, ఇత‌ర సాంకేతికత విష‌యంలో రాజీ ప‌డ‌కుండా సినిమాని తీర్చిదిద్దారు. సాయి ధరమ్ తేజ్ "రిపబ్లిక్" తర్వాత దాదాపు ఏడాదిన్నర తర్వాత ఈ చిత్రంతో ముందుకొచ్చాడు. తనకి రోడ్డు ప్రమాదం జరిగిన పిదప సుదీర్ఘమైన గ్యాప్ తీసుకుని నటించిన చిత్రమిది. 

ట్రైలర్లోనే ఇది హారర్ కథాంశమని అర్ధమయ్యింది. ఇంత వరకు సాయితేజ్ ఈ తరహా చిత్రం చెయ్యకపోవడం, ఈ జానర్లో పెద్ద హీరో సినిమా చూసి కూడా చాలా నాళ్లు కావడం వల్ల దీనిపై ఆసక్తి నెలకొంది. పైగా "సుకుమార్ రైటింగ్స్" ముద్ర కూడా పడడం వల్ల ఏ మాత్రం తక్కువ అంచనా వెయ్యడానికి లేదన్న అభిప్రాయం కూడా కలిగింది. వివరాల్లోకి వెళ్దాం.

కథగా చెప్పాలంటే మరీ రొటీన్ గా లేకుండా కాస్తంత కొత్త నేపథ్యంతో రాసుకున్న కథే. 1979లో రుద్రవనం అనే గ్రామంలో ఒక కుటుంబం చేతబడి చేస్తోందని భావించి ఆ ఊరి జనం ఆ భార్యాభర్తల్ని సజీవదహనం చేస్తారు. చనిపోతూ ఆ గృహిణి ఆ ఊరిని పుష్కర కాలానికి వల్లకాడౌతుందని శపిస్తుంది. ఆ తర్వాత కథ 1991కి వెళ్తుంది. 

ఆ ఊరికి వేరే ఊరి నుంచి ఒక తల్లి, కొడుకు సూర్య (సాయితేజ్) తమ బంధువుల ఇంటికి వస్తారు. ఆ ఊరి సర్పంచ్ కూతురు నందినిని (సంయుక్త) సూర్య ప్రేమిస్తాడు. ఇదిలా ఉంటే గృహిణి శాపం పండి ఆ ఊరిని దుష్టశక్తి ఆవహిస్తుంది. ఊరిలో ఒక్కొక్కరూ అనూహ్యంగా చనిపోతుంటారు. ఆ చావు నందినిని వెంటాడుతుంటుంది. ఏవిటా శక్తి? ఆ శక్తిని నడిపిస్తున్నది ఎవరు? మన హీరో తన ప్రేయసిని, ఆ ఊరిని క్షుద్రశక్తి నుంచి ఎలా కాపాడుకుంటాడనేది తర్వాతి కథ.  

కథగా బాగానే ఉన్నా కథనంలో మరింత పరిపక్వత, గాఢత లోపించాయి. ఈ జానర్లో లాజిక్కులు ఎవరూ అడగరు. ఎందుకంటే దెయ్యం, క్షుద్రశక్తి అనేవి మేజిక్ తప్ప లాజిక్ తో సంబంధం లేనివి. 

ప్రేక్షకులని ఒక ప్రపంచంలోకి తీసుకుపోయి భావోద్వేగాల నడుమ భయపెట్టగలగాలి. క్షుద్రశక్తి మీద మానవశక్తో, దైవశక్తో గెలుస్తున్నప్పుడు రోమాంచితమయ్యి కళ్లు చెమ్మగిల్లాలి. అదే మేజిక్కంటే. 

అరుంధతి, చంద్రముఖి లాంటి సినిమాలు ఈ జానర్ కి ఒక బెంచ్ మార్క్. కనుక ఏం తీసిన దానిని దాటి ఉంటే తప్ప అద్భుతమనిపించదు. కానీ ఇక్కడ సుకుమార్ గారి రైటింగ్ ప్రమేయం ఉన్నా అది జరగలేదు. 

మొత్తం సినిమాలో ఉలిక్కిపడే సన్నివేశం ఒక్కటంటే ఒక్కటి మాత్రమే ఉంది. ఇక రోమాంచితమవ్వడానికి, కళ్లు చెమ్మగిల్లడానికి ఒక్క సీన్ కూడా లేదు. కథనంలో రివీలింగ్ పాయింట్స్ గా రాసుకున్నవి కూడా ప్రేక్షకులు ముందే గ్రహించే స్థాయిలో ఉండడం వల్ల అక్కడ కూడా డ్రాప్ అవుతూ ఉంటుంది. 

ఈ మైనస్సుల్ని మినహాయిస్తే మిగిలిన ప్రయత్నమంతా బాగానే జరిగిందనిపిస్తుంది. విజువల్ గా హారర్ ఏంబియన్స్ ని సృష్టించగలిగారు. లొకేషన్స్ గానీ, ఆర్ట్ విభాగం కానీ బాగా పనిచేసాయి. 

ఆర్టిస్టులు కూడా ఎక్కడా అతి చెయ్యకుండా ఎంత వరకు చెయ్యాలో అంతవరకు చేసారు. బ్యాక్ గ్రౌండ్ మ్యూజిక్ జస్ట్ ఓకే. సౌండ్ ఎఫెక్ట్స్ ఈ జానర్ కి న్యాయం చేసే విధంగా లేవు. పాటలున్నా తేలిపోయాయి. చూస్తున్నప్పుడు పర్వాలేదనిపించినా స్వరకల్పనలో హుక్ ఫ్యాక్టర్ లేక డీలా పడ్డాయి. 

ప్రధమార్ధం ప్లాట్ పాయింటుని ఎష్టాబ్లిష్ చేస్తూ బాగానే సాగింది. కానీ హీరో హీరోయిన్స్ మధ్య రొమాంటిక్ ట్రాక్ వీక్ గా ఉంది. ద్వితీయార్ధంలో కథ క్లైమాక్స్ కి చేరుకునే క్రమంలో కొంత ల్యాగ్ అనిపించింది. పతాక స్థాయికి చేరాల్సిన సన్నివేశాలు కొన్ని అర్ధంతరంగా కంక్లూజన్ కి వచ్చేస్తూ ఎమోషనల్ గ్రాఫ్ ని డైల్యూట్ చేసినవి కూడా ఉన్నాయి. 

కానీ రాసుకున్న దానికి అంతకంటే ఏమీ చెయ్యలేని పరిస్థితి దర్శకుడిది. 

సాయితేజ్ ఎప్పటిలాగే తన పద్ధతిలో బాగానే నటించాడు. కథ పరంగా అతనిలోని హీరోయిజం అతి అవ్వకుండా బానే ఉంది. 

సంయుక్తా మీనన్ ఓకే. ఈ పాత్రకి చంద్రముఖిలోని జ్యోతిక రేంజు లుక్స్, పర్ఫార్మెన్స్ ఉంటే తప్ప న్యాయం జరగదు. కనుక ఉన్నంతలో సరిపెట్టుకోవడమే. 

పూజారిగా సాయిచంద్, హీరోయిన్ తండ్రిగా రాజీవ్ కనకాల, మరో ఊరి పెద్దగా సునీల్ కనిపించినంత సేపు పర్వాలేదనిపించారు. అఘోరాగా అజయ్ పాత్ర టేకాఫ్ బాగానే ఉన్నా క్రమంగా డైల్యూట్ అయిపోతూ ఏవరేజ్ అనిపించుకుంటుంది. 

ఎప్పుడూ రొటీన్ కథా చిత్రాలు కాకుండా ఇలా హారర్ మెటీరియల్ తో రావడం, కథ ముగింపు కూడా సగటు సినిమాల్లో చూసే లాంటి ముగింపు కాకపోవడం బాగున్నాయి. దర్శకుడు కార్తిక్ దండు గౌరవానికి భంగం కలిగించని సినిమా ఇది. అద్భుతం కాకపోయినా ఆదరించదగిన విధంగా ఉంది. మరీ ఎక్కువ అంచనాలు పెట్టుకోకుండా చూస్తే బాగానే ఉంటుంది.

What’s it about?

Mysterious deaths occur in the village of ‘Rudra Vanam’ as a result of an unknown person’s occult practice. Surya (Sai Dharam Tej), who has come to the village on a visit from the city, decides to investigate the deaths. Meanwhile, the poojari of the village performs astadigbandhanam (the locking of the village from eight corners) to save them. According to the scriptures, no one should leave the village for a few days, and no outsiders are permitted to enter the village.

Surya, on the other hand, discovers a pattern in these mysterious deaths, and the next victim is none other than Nandini (Samyuktha Menon), the village belle with whom he falls in love.

Will Surya track down the person responsible for the deaths? Will he be able to save Nandini?

Karthik Varma Dandu, a protégé of director Sukumar, previously directed “Bham Bolenath,” which starred Navdeep and Naveen Chandra. After a long gap, he came out with his second film, “Virupaksha,” with a screenplay written by his guru Sukumar. The story and setting of Karthik Dandu stand out in the film.

The period setting and the forest village provided the director with the opportunity to create some thrilling episodes. The majority of horror films take place in a house. The story in “Virupaksha” is also confined to a single location, but this time it is a village rather than a house. Furthermore, he wrote the story in such a way that the village could be locked, limiting the drama to a single location. In many ways, it adheres to all of the genre elements of horror drama. Yet, the overall packaging of the story has given a fresh look.

This spooky thriller also benefits greatly from a compelling narration. The first act is fairly routine, but things pick up and stay on track dramatically once the second act begins. A thriller isn’t a thriller unless there’s a final twist. The surprising conclusion in “Virupaksha” is also a huge win.

As I watched the proceedings, the Netflix’s “Kingdom” series came to mind. While the series is a zombie drama, many similarities can be found between “Kingdom” and “Virupaksha”. Of course, the recent Kannada film “Vikrant Rona” is also on the similar lines. But “Virupaksha” is in its own different and quite an engaging period horror drama.

Karthik Dandu deserves praise for his captivating storytelling in the second half. His skills shine through in the main sequence of the hero’s journey to uncover the occult practitioner. This segment provides the most exciting, surprising parts of the whole setup.

On the downside, the film is also suffers from excess runtime, regular scenes and some practicable portions. But they are very few.

Sai Dharam Tej does a neat job. Even though he has recently recovered from a serious bike accident, he looks fit and apt for the role. Samyuktha Menon shines in the climactic scene. She does well in those parts. Sai Chand is convincing in his role of a poojari. Rajeev Kanakala is good.

Cinematographer Shamdat, the film’s score composer, and the set decorator all deserve a lot of credit. They’ve all put forth their best effort.

Bottom line: “Virupaksha” is a well-crafted period horror drama. The film makes an engaging watch to the most part. The setting make it stand out from the crowd of standard thrillers, despite a few problems.

Virupaksha Movie Review: A layered, taut thriller

Arundhati , Kodi Ramakrishna’s superb horror-fantasy drama in 2009, successfully wove the strong narrative of a chosen one rising to meet challenges prescribed by destiny, against a backdrop of religion, sorcery and the supernatural. Thirteen years since, Virupaksha offers a wholly new story borne of the thematic juxtaposition of this cinematic predecessor. 

Rudravanam, circa 1991. As villages are wont to be, this hillside hamlet is characterised by close-knit bonds and a propensity for age-old traditions. Behind this facade lies a dark crime from over a decade ago (shown in the film’s prologue) that every resident of Rudravanam is complicit in. Surya (Sai Dharam Tej), a city-bred boy, enters Rudravanam with his mother to give their land for a school. Soon enough, he meets Nandini (Samyuktha) and… love happens. The romantic subplot is reminiscent of love stories from Sukumar’s oeuvre, consent be damned. Another reminder of Sukumar’s school of thought is how there is so much more written around and into an already-explored trope. For instance, think of how Nandini keeps rebuffing Surya’s advances. She is shown, in the first few scenes, as someone haughty. But before we might witness a ‘Taming of the Shrew’ situation, we get Surya propose to Nandini, rather beautifully, by saying, “ Neeku kopam osthadi ani telusu, kani nenu aa kopani jeevithanthamu bharisthanu. ” (I know you would be angry at me for proposing, but it is anger I want to endure for the rest of my life). Just as I wondered why Samyuktha was not being as histrionic as arrogant girls usually are in films, her character’s true colours come to the fore, putting doubts at rest. After last month’s Dasara , made by Sukumar’s protege Srikanth Odela, we see yet another film subvert its skeletal material delightfully.

While Karthik Dandu and Sukumar are the primary writers of the film, it is not an exaggeration to suggest that the film’s composer, Ajaneesh B Loknath, is almost its honorary screenwriter. His music, combined with sound design by Sync Cinema, take care of the narrative heavy lifting. While the film’s songs are not much to write about, the background score takes the cake. The sounds of Virupaksha are eerie, indicating tension and foreboding in all the right places, rising and ebbing like a dark dream. The heavy use of music and sound design in many a film is often an attempt to mask story deficiencies, but here, in a horror film, it is par for the course. Virupaksha tiptoes the pathways of horror without committing to its tropes wholesale. 

The film, more often than not, feels like a homage to the filmography of M Night Shyamalan, setting up its story gradually, with increasing levels of fear and ominousness while grounding it in strong psychological undercurrents. Crows, in all the metaphoric value they lend to a supernatural feature, form the glorious extras of Virupaksha , alongside the usual suspects of blackened coconuts, reddened lemons and an eclipsing moon. The film is set in the 90s, and the presence of rotary telephones and ambassador cars gives Virupaksha a cinematic sheen, a film set amidst smartphones and sedans will never quite give. The film’s dialogues are chock-a-block with dense words like Raktha Darpana, Ashta Dibbandham and Pasuthatvam . They are as effective as they are amusing. 

Virupaksha truly finds its footing in its second half, as conflicts heighten, and various threads of the narrative come together. The film’s revelations are a stream of expositions but to the credit of Karthik Dandu, interest or excitement never wanes. Sai Dharam Tej’s character, who is partly a saviour, partly an investigator, sets ahead on a journey to find answers and solve problems in the third act of the film. There are two reveals about a brother and sister duo in the film that neatly wraps the film’s questions. Beneath the gory, dramatic proceedings of Virupaksha lies a subtle but important message against the perils of groupthink and superstitions. Between the rationalism of Karthikeya or the faith-centric religious overtones of Karthikeya 2 lies Virupaksha which makes a case for the merits of black magic while simultaneously urging people to err on the path of reason.

Sai Dharam Tej and Kamal Kamaraju’s characters in the film are the proverbial fish-out-of-the-water outsiders who enter dire situations with no perspective. One wins, the other loses. In Spotlight, Stanley Tucci’s Mitch Garabedian is seen telling Mark Ruffalo’s Michael Rezendes that it is outsiders that usually possess greater perspective and skill to crack a deep-seated crime wide open. The same happens here. The protagonist’s perspective is also reflected aptly in the title of the film. While Virupaksha, another name of Shiva, is a Shaivite clapback (like Rudravanam), it also means the ‘all-seeing one’, displaying the balanced perspective of someone who is not on the Pratipaksha (in favor) or Edhurpaksha (against). Perspectives also play an important role in the cinematography of Virupaksha. We often get to see overhead shots, scenes where the camera is placed at many voyeuristic angles, which make the audience feel like they are almost eavesdropping. One of my favourite shots displays the lead actress from the point of view of a…crow. Delightful. The penultimate parts of the film is an elegant incorporation of the Trolley problem. Is it fair to kill one to save many? Or let many die but not intentionally kill one?  The casting of the film for the supporting characters is a good mix of casting for and against type. Brahmaji and Sunil ably play the roles they have portrayed in many films while Ajay’s performance as Aghora comes as a breath of fresh air. Speaking of which, it is equally refreshing to witness Rajeev Kanakala’s character stay alive in the film, from start to finish. Old wine in a new bottle is often a cause of worry and consternation for film critics, often using that phrase to actively criticise a film. Virupaksha is for the large part, old wine in a new bottle, but hey? Is wine not supposed to taste better with age?

Virupaksha movie review: Sai Dharam Tej-starrer supernatural thriller delivers

The film perfectly creates the ambience at the very beginning and keeps on adding layers as the story progresses..

Sai Dharam Tej is returning to films with Virupaksha after recuperating from a near fatal accident. The film has producer BVSN Prasad joining hands with Sukumar Writings banner to present a story written by Sukumar and directed by his former assistant Karthik Dandu. Touted as a horror thriller, the film managed to create a buzz among audiences with its promotions.

For the fans of the genre, its beginning bodes well. Virupaksha begins with the gruesome burning of a couple who are suspected of witchcraft in a village called Rudravanam in 1978. Before being burnt to death, the woman curses that the entire village will be destroyed within 12 years.

The story begins again after 12 years as Surya ( Sai Dharam Tej ), his mother and friend (Abhinav Gomatam) are visiting Rudravanam. It is the birthplace of Surya’s mother and she is visiting it after 15 years on the occasion of village deity Modamamba’s annual celebration.

The film perfectly creates the ambience at the very beginning and keeps on adding layers as the story progresses. After a shocking interval, the second half slightly drops in pace as the various pieces of the jigsaw are put together, to finally pick pace in the pre climax sequence. The climax is impressive, though it clearly wants to shock and awe. In fact, that also led to a few people walking out of the theatre but this is an ending that is contrary to popular, established writing patterns.

Sai Dharam Tej gives a good performance while Samyuktha’s role will be remembered for a long time. Ajay impresses in a difficult role that demands different body language and demeanour. Rajiv, Brahmaji, Sunil have done well. Saichand impresses again with his different look.

Samdutt’s camera captures the night visuals brilliantly and creates the mood effectively. Ajaneesh Loknath’s background score fits the film. Karthik Varma succeeds as a director. Sukumar’s screenplay is focussed on adding thrills to the film. All in all, Virupaksha is an entertaining supernatural thriller that gives value for money.

  రుద్రవనం అనే ఊరిలో క్షుద్రపూజలు చేస్తున్నారని ఒక కుటుంబాన్ని ఆ ఊరి ప్రజలు చంపేస్తారు. ఆ జంట కుమారుడ్ని ఆ ఊరు నుంచి పంపించేస్తారు. ఇది జరిగిన పుష్కర కాలం తర్వాత సూర్య (సాయి ధరమ్ తేజ్) తన తల్లితో పాటు రుద్రవనం ఊరు వస్తాడు. రుద్రవనం తన తల్లి ఊరు కావడంతో.. ఆ ఊరుతో సూర్యకి బంధం ఉంటుంది. ఈ క్రమంలో జరిగిన నాటకీయ పరిణామాల మధ్య నందిని (సంయుక్త మీనన్)తో సూర్య, ప్రేమలో పడతాడు. ఆమె ప్రేమ పొందటం కోసం సూర్య ప్రయత్నం చేస్తూ ఉంటాడు. అయితే, మరోవైపు రుద్రవనం గ్రామంలో వరుసగా మనుషులు చనిపోతూ ఉంటారు. దాంతో ఆ ఊరు మొత్తం భయంతో వణికపోతుంది. అసలు ఎందుకు మనుషులు చనిపోతున్నారు ?, వారి చావుల వెనుక ఉన్న రహస్యం ఏమిటి ?, ఈ మిస్టరీని సూర్య ఎలా సాల్వ్ చేశాడు ?, చివరకు ఏం జరిగింది? అనేది మిగిలిన కథ.

ప్లస్ పాయింట్స్ :

ఈ సినిమాకి బిగ్గెస్ట్ ప్లస్ పాయింట్ దర్శకుడు కార్తీక్ దండు రాసుకున్న కథ. పైగా కార్తీక్ దండు ఈ కథను తెరపై అద్భుతంగా చూపించాడు. నటీనటుల విషయానికి వస్తే.. సాయి ధరమ్ తేజ్ పాత్ర చాలా బాగుంది. సూర్య పాత్రలో సాయి ధరమ్ తేజ్ కూడా చాలా చక్కగా నటించాడు. కొన్ని థ్రిల్లర్ సన్నివేశాల్లో తన రియలిస్టిక్ యాక్టింగ్ తో ఆకట్టుకున్నాడు. ముఖ్యంగా సెకెండ్ హాఫ్ లో సాగే కొన్ని యాక్షన్ సన్నివేశాల్లో అలాగే ప్రీ క్లైమాక్స్ లో వచ్చే కీలక సీన్స్ లో కూడా సాయి తేజ్ నటన చాలా బాగుంది.

ఈ సినిమాలో మరో ప్రధాన పాత్రలో నటించిన హీరోయిన్ సంయుక్త మీనన్ కూడా తన నటనతో ఆకట్టుకుంది. కొన్ని హారర్ సన్నివేశాల్లో ఆమె తన పెర్ఫార్మెన్స్ తో మెప్పించింది. మరో కీలక పాత్రలో నటించిన రాజీవ్ కనకాల బాగా నటించారు. అలాగే బ్రహ్మాజీ, అజయ్, సునీల్ మరియు మిగిలిన నటీనటులు కూడా తమ పాత్రల్లో మెప్పించారు. దర్శకుడు కార్తీక్ కథలో ఉన్న సస్పెన్స్ ని బాగా మెయింటైన్ చేసాడు. పైగా హారర్ సీన్స్ ను కూడా చాలా బాగా పిక్చరైజ్ చేసాడు.

అన్నిటికీ మించి పీరియాడిక్ యాక్షన్ థ్రిల్లర్ నేపథ్యంలో రూపొందంటమే ఈ సినిమాకు ప్రధాన బలం. అలాగే దర్శకుడు రాసుకున్న కొన్ని కీలక సన్నివేశాలు కూడా ప్రత్యేక ఆకర్షణగా నిలుస్తాయి. ఈ సినిమాలోని విజువల్స్ అండ్ సౌండ్ ఎఫెక్ట్స్ చాలా బాగున్నాయి. ప్రీ ఇంటర్వెల్ నుంచి కథ ఊహించని టర్న్ తీసుకోవడం, మెయిన్ విలన్ ను ఎవరూ ఊహించని విధంగా డిజైన్ చేయడం బాగుంది.

మైనస్ పాయింట్స్ :

ఈ సినిమాలోని ప్రేమ సన్నివేశాలు ఇంకా బెటర్ గా ఉండి ఉంటే బాగుండేది. చాలా లాజికల్ పాయింట్స్ ని పర్ఫెక్ట్ గా రివీల్ చేసిన డైరెక్టర్ కొన్నిటిని మాత్రం ఇన్ డైరెక్ట్ గా చాలా సింపుల్ గా చూపించి వదిలేశాడు. అలాగే కీలకమైన సన్నివేశాలను బాగా రాసుకున్నప్పటికీ.. మిగిలిన సన్నివేశాల్లో ముఖ్యంగా సెకండ్ హాఫ్ మధ్యలో వచ్చే కొన్ని సీన్స్ ను ఇంకా ఆసక్తికరంగా మలిచి ఉంటే బాగుండేది.

సినిమా చూస్తున్నంతసేపు తర్వాత ఏం జరుగుతుంది ?, హీరో ఆ చావుల రహస్యాన్ని ఎలా కనిపెడతాడు?, ఆ ఊరుని ఎలా కాపాడతాడు ? అనే ఉత్కంఠ ప్రేక్షకుల్లో బాగానే కలిగించారు. కాకపోతే.. క్లైమాక్స్ కి ముందు వచ్చే సీక్వెన్స్ లను ఇంకా బెటర్ గా చూపించే స్కోప్ ఉంది. అలాగే ఇంకా క్లారిటీగా చూపించి ఉండాల్సింది. అదే విధంగా హీరోయిన్ పాత్రకు – రాజీవ్ కనకాల పాత్రకు మధ్య ట్రాక్ ను కూడా ఇంకా బలంగా రాసుకోవాల్సింది.

మంచి కథా నేపధ్యాన్ని తీసుకోవడంలో సక్సెస్ అయిన దర్శకుడు కార్తీక్ దండు, కొన్ని చోట్ల ఉత్కంఠభరితమైన సీన్స్ రాసుకోవడంలో మాత్రం కొన్ని చోట్ల తడబడ్డాడు. కానీ ఆయన రూపొందించిన సన్నివేశాలు ఆకట్టుకున్నాయి. సంగీత దర్శకుడు అజనీష్ లోక్‌నాథ్ సంగీతం బాగుంది. సినిమాటోగ్రఫీ వర్క్ సినిమాకే ప్రత్యేక ఆకర్షణగా నిలుస్తోంది. ఎడిటింగ్ కూడా బాగుంది. ఇక దర్శకుడు ఆలోచనను నమ్మి ఇలాంటి వైవిధ్యమైన చిత్రాన్ని తెలుగు ప్రేక్షకులకు అందించింనందుకు నిర్మాతను అభినందించాలి. నిర్మాత బివిఎస్ఎన్ ప్రసాద్ నిర్మాణ విలువులు కూడా చాలా బాగున్నాయి.

‘విరూపాక్ష’ అంటూ వచ్చిన ఈ మిస్టరీ యాక్షన్ థ్రిల్లర్ ప్రేక్షకులకు కొత్త అనుభూతిని ఇస్తోంది. ముఖ్యంగా దర్శకుడు కార్తీక్ రాసిన కథ, హారర్ సన్నివేశాలు, కొన్ని థ్రిల్లింగ్ ఎలిమెంట్స్ అలాగే టేకింగ్ సినిమాలో ఆకట్టుకునే అంశాలు. అయితే, కొన్ని సీన్స్ సినిమాటిక్ గా అండ్ స్లోగా సాగడం వంటి అంశాలు బలహీనతలుగా నిలుస్తాయి. ఓవరాల్ గా భిన్నమైన, కొత్త తరహా థ్రిల్లర్ చిత్రాలని ఇష్టపడేవారికి ఈ సినిమా చాలా బాగా నచ్చుతుంది. అలాగే మిగిలిన వర్గాల ప్రేక్షకులను కూడా ఈ చిత్రం ఆకట్టుకుంటుంది.

Virupaksha review: Samyuktha leaves a mark as village belle in this mystical thriller

Karthik Varma Dandu's directorial debut has both its merits and shortcomings but succeeds to keep the audience engrossed.

Sai Dharam Tej’s much-awaited Virupaksha released in the theatres on Friday, 21 April, amid much fanfare. This occult-based horror thriller also features Samyuktha in a key role.

Read on to know if it impresses audiences or falls flat.

Virupaksha starts with a heart-wrenching incident that occurred in 1979.

A young couple — Krishna Murthy (Kamal Kamaraj) and his wife — are burnt alive by the villagers of Rudravanam, suspecting that they are performing black magic that was leading to a series of deaths of children in the village.

While dying, Krishna Murthy’s wife curses that the whole village will be destroyed after 12 years.

Twelve years later, in 1991, Surya (Sai Dharam Tej) along with his aunt visits Rudravanam to donate their land for a school building. He meets Nandini (Samyuktha) and love blossoms between them immediately.

But the 12-year-old curse comes true and the village witnesses mysterious deaths again. Also, a mystical spell is cast on Nandini, putting her life in danger.

How Surya unravels the reason behind the supernatural occurrences and whether he saves Nandini from the spell form the main plot of Virupaksha .

L oose ends amid i nteresting backdrop.

Director Karthik Varma Dandu chooses an interesting and challenging story for his debut. He also ensures that the narration is fast-paced with enough twists and turns.

Senior director Sukumar wrote the screenplay. But too many loose ends and unrealistic premises spoil the intensity of the story.

While the first half is gripping and entertaining, the second half veers towards unrealistic scenarios. As a result, audiences will find this occult-based movie thrilling, but only in parts.

Samyuktha puts up a good show

While Virupaksha has been publicised as a Sai Dharam Tej-starrer with him playing the lead role, it is actually Samyuktha who gets the most screen space and importance.

Samyuktha dazzles in this supernatural thriller. From a simple and cute village belle to a woman possessed by an evil spirit, she brings different hues and variations in her performance.

Sai Dharam Tej is fine as her lover.

Rajiv Kanakala, Yashoda, Sunil, and Sonia Singh play important supporting roles and are good.

Technical crafts elevate the plot

Virupaksha is an intense mystical thriller relying heavily on fine technicalities.

Cinematographer Shamdat Sainudeen does an impressive job.

Art director Sri Nagendra Tangala deserves praise for creating rustic and horror settings with equal finesse.

Visual effects are partly impressive.

Editor Navin Nooli should have trimmed the movie further.

Ajneesh Loknath’s background score is engrossing. There are just a couple of passable songs but are all part of the flow.

సాయి ధరమ్ తేజ్ యాక్సిడెంట్ తర్వాత వస్తున్న మొదటి సినిమా కావడంతో విరూపాక్షపై ముందు నుంచే క్యూరియాసిటీ ఉంది. పైగా టీజర్, ట్రైలర్ అన్నీ ఆసక్తికరంగా ఉన్నాయి. అన్నింటికి తోడు సుకుమార్ స్క్రీన్ ప్లే అందించడం మరో అదనపు ఆకర్షణ. ఇక థ్రిల్లర్ బ్యాక్ డ్రాప్ కావడంతో విరూపాక్ష ఎలా ఉండబోతుందో అనే ఆసక్తి అందరిలోనూ ఉంది. మరి ఈ చిత్రం అంచనాలు అందుకుందా..? సాయి ధరమ్ తేజ్ కమ్ బ్యాక్ ఇచ్చాడా లేదా అనేది డీటైల్డ్ రివ్యూలో చూద్దాం..

రుద్రవణం అనే ఊరు.. 1979 సంవత్సరం.. ఆ ఏడాది ఊళ్లో అనుకోని సంఘటన ఒకటి జరుగుతుంది. ఒక జంటను గ్రామస్థులు చేతబడి చేస్తున్నారనే నెపంతో సజీవ దహనం చేస్తారు. అలా జరిగిన పుష్కరం తర్వాత.. అంటే 1991లోకి ఆ ఊళ్ళోకి ఓ పని మీద సూర్య (సాయి ధరమ్ తేజ్) వస్తాడు. ఊరి అందాలతో పాటు.. సర్పంచ్ (రాజీవ్ కనకాల) కూతురు నందిని (సంయుక్త మీనన్)ను చూడగానే ఇష్టపడతాడు. అలా వాళ్ల ప్రేమకథ సాగుతుండగానే.. ఊళ్ళో వరస మరణాలు సంభవిస్తుంటాయి. దాంతో ఊరిని అష్టదిగ్భంధనం చేస్తారు. కానీ ఆ తర్వాతే మరణాల సంఖ్య పెరుగుతుంది. అమ్మవారు ఉన్న ఊళ్ళోకి దుష్ట శక్తులు ఎలా వచ్చాయి.. వచ్చిన వాటిని హీరో ఎలా అడ్డుకున్నాడు..? అసలు గ్రామస్థులు ఆ జంటను చంపడానికి కారణమేంటి అనేది అసలు కథ..

దెయ్యాలు, హార్రర్ కథలు గురించి చెప్పాలంటే ముందుగా చెప్పుకోవాల్సింది ట్విస్టుల గురించి.. ఒక్కటి బయటపెట్టినా కచ్చితంగా సినిమాపై ఆసక్తి తగ్గిపోతుంది. చూసే ఆసక్తి కూడా ఉండదు. విరూపాక్ష కూడా అలాంటి సస్పెన్స్ హార్రర్ డ్రామానే. హై టెక్నికల్ వ్యాల్యూస్‌తో ఈ సినిమా వచ్చింది. ఎప్పటికీ బోర్ కొట్టని ఎవర్ గ్రీన్ హిట్ ఫార్ములా దెయ్యాల కథలు.. ఓ ఆత్మను ఊరి మీదకి వదిలి పకడ్బందీగా స్క్రిప్ట్ రాసుకుంటే పక్కా హిట్ అని చాలా సినిమాలు నిరూపించాయి. ఇదే ఫార్ములా విరూపాక్షకు కూడా వర్కౌట్ అయింది. ఎన్నో సినిమాల్లో చూసిన ఒక ‘ఆత్మ’కథ ఇది. తెలిసిన కథే అయినా.. ఆసక్తికరమైన కథనం.. అద్భుతమైన సౌండ్ ఎఫెక్ట్స్ తో స్పెషల్ గా మారింది విరూపాక్ష. టెక్నికల్ గా చాలా సౌండింగ్ గా ఉంది ఈ సినిమా. సినిమా మొదలవడమే చాలా ఇంట్రెస్టింగ్ గా అనిపిస్తుంది. నెమ్మదిగా కథలోకి వెళుతున్న కొద్ది వరస మరణాలు క్యూరియాసిటీ పెంచేస్తాయి. ఇంటర్వెల్ బ్లాక్ చాలా బాగుంది. ఫస్టాఫ్ లో ఎదురైన ప్రశ్నలకు.. సెకండాఫ్ సమాధానం ఇస్తుంది. ఎంత గ్రిప్పింగ్ గా అనిపించినా.. ఈ కథలోనూ కొన్ని లోపాలు కనిపిస్తాయి. కానీ సుకుమార్ స్క్రీన్ ప్లే వాటిని కవర్ చేసింది. క్లైమాక్స్ ట్విస్ట్ ఊహించడం కష్టం. అదే సినిమాకు ప్లస్ కూడా. పైగా చివరి 30 నిమిషాలు అలా కూర్చోబెట్టేస్తుంది సినిమా. ట్విస్టులు చెప్పకూడదు కాబట్టి రివ్యూలో ఇంతకుమించి డీటైలింగ్‌గా వెళ్లడం కష్టమే.

సాయి ధరమ్ తేజ్ కు కమ్ బ్యాక్ సినిమా ఇది.. సూర్య పాత్రలో చక్కగా ఒదిగిపోయాడు. తన పాత్రకు న్యాయం చేసాడు. నటనలోనూ మెచ్యూర్డ్‌గా కనిపించాడు. సంయుక్త మీనన్ క్యారెక్టరైజేషన్ బాగుంది. ఆమె పాత్రను అస్సలు ఊహించలేరు. ఇక సునీల్ కారెక్టర్ అసంపూర్తిగా అనిపించింది. రాజీవ్ కనకాల, సాయి చంద్, అజయ్ పాత్రలు బాగున్నాయి. సోనియా సింగ్, శ్యామల బాగా నటించారు. మిగిలిన వాళ్లంతా ఓకే.

టెక్నికల్ టీం:

విరూపాక్ష పూర్తిగా టెక్నికల్ సినిమా. వాళ్లకు పెద్దపీట వేయాల్సిన సినిమా. ముఖ్యంగా కాంతార ఫేమ్ అజినీష్ లోక్‌నాథ్ మ్యూజిక్ అదిరిపోయింది. పాటలు అంతగా ఆకట్టుకోలేదు కానీ సౌండ్స్ మాత్రం అదిరిపోయాయి. శామ్ దత్ సైనూద్ధీన్ సినిమాటోగ్రఫీ పీక్స్ అంతే. ఇక ఎడిటింగ్ చాలా బాగుంది. కథ పరంగా దర్శకుడు రొటీన్ రాసుకున్నా.. సుకుమార్ స్క్రీన్ ప్లే మాత్రం మామూలుగా లేదు. ఏ చిన్న ట్విస్ట్ రివీల్ చేసినా.. సినిమా మొత్తంపై ఎఫెక్ట్ పడుతుంది. ఇటుకపై ఇటుక పేర్చినట్లుగా ఈ కథనం ఉంటుంది. దర్శకుడిగా కార్తిక్ దండు తొలి సినిమాతోనే సత్తా చూపించాడు.

ఓవరాల్‌గా విరూపాక్ష.. కొన్ని లోపాలున్నా.. హార్రర్ సినిమా లవర్స్‌కు బెస్ట్ ఛాయిస్..

Movie Review: VIRUPAKSHA

Virupaksha was released in theatres today. Here is our review:

In 1991, a hamlet named Rudravanam falls prey to mysterious happenings after the village temple is claimed to come under a malefic influence. The revered priest orders Ashta Digbandhanam, which roughly means that all movement into and out of the village is restricted until certain rituals are completed.

In this scenario, Surya (Sai Dharam Tej) figures out that the unexplained deaths of innocents are going to be never-ending. Surya's quest for the truth behind the deaths leads to some shocking discoveries. Meanwhile, Surya's love interest Nandini (Samyuktha Menon) is facing existential danger.

Performances

Sai Dharam Tej's performances in films like 'Prati Roju Pandage' and 'Solo Bratuke So Better' were regular. In 'Republic', he was evidently calm and composed. In 'Virupaksha', he goes beyond with more intent. He takes the backseat to make the film acquire the features of a genre outing in the first half.

Samyukta Menon does a role that doesn't require her to keep falling for the hero. If the hero is a 'sir', she is a 'madam'. Sunil (as a powerful man), Brahmaji (as a commoner) and Ajay (as an occult practitioner) take some time to make an impact, but Sai Chand delivers right from his first scene onwards.

B Ajaneesh Loknath's background score is impeccable in several stretches. The stylized montage song in the second half ensures that the transition from one mood to another is smooth. Shamdat Sainuddin's cinematography reflects the rich production values of SVCC and Sukumar Writings.

The backdrop of the village is utilized well without making it look like a copied version of the Padaghattam village from 'Acharya', for example. In this regard, production designer Sri Nagendra Tangala must be appreciated.

The sound design comes to the fore in the scenes where deaths are involved.

Casting of Anchor Shyamala, Rajeev Kanakala. Pacing issues in the first half (which gets resolved fast). No innovative hero elevation moments.

Deeper Look

Accidents, dangers, disease, death. Virupaksha has these elements planted all over. The second half is where the bonafide drama takes place. The thrills don't go haywire and they don't confuse the audience.

Director Karthik Dandu, who previously made 'Bham Bholenath', is clearly influenced by Manoj Night Shyamalan's movies. Sukumar's screenplay, even though it is not flawless, enhances his directorial vision.

There are some portions where the film doesn't feel like it is telling a high-stakes story. There is no sense of urgency in the first half. Once the character Bhairava becomes a prominent guy in the whodunit plot, the film puts behind its pacing issues. Some elements like a pandemic (read 'Mahammari') and a rulebook (read 'Sasanala Grantham') could have been elevated in a better way.

Virupaksha Movie review:   Sai Dharam Tej and Samyuktha Menon starrer investigative and horror thriller drama Virupaksha has hit the theaters today on 21st April. Let’s see the story of Virupaksha.

 Story:  Set in the backdrop of  1990s, the story takes place in a village Rudravanam. A family is killed by the people of that village for practicing occult worship. After a long time Surya (Sai Dharam Tej) comes to Rudravanam village along with his mother. He falls in love with Nandini (Samyukta Menon), the  daughter of Rudravanam’s sarpanch. However, on the other hand, people keep dying in Rudravanam village. The whole town trembles with fear. Why are people actually dying?, What is the secret behind their deaths?, How did Surya solve this mystery?, What finally happened?  To get these answers, one should watch the movie Virupaksha on silver screen.

Performance:  Sai Dharam Tej’ character is very good. He also acted very well as Surya. He impressed with his realistic acting in some thriller scenes. Sai  Dharam Tej’s acting is very good especially in some action scenes in the second half as well as in the key scenes in the pre-climax. Samyukta Menon also impressed with her performance. She impressed  the viwers with her performance in some horror scenes. Rajeev Kanakala, who played another key role, acted well. Also Brahmaji, Ajay, Sunil and the rest of the cast have also impressed in their roles.

Technical:  The biggest plus point of this movie Virupaksha is the story written by director Karthik Dandu. Moreover, Karthik Dandu has shown this story brilliantly on screen. Music director Ajaneesh Loknath music is good. The cinematography work is a special attraction of the movie. The editing is also good. The producer should be congratulated for believing in the director’s idea and presenting such a diverse film to the Telugu audience. Producer BVSN Prasad’s production values are also very good.

 Analysis:  Overall Virupaksha is an engaging mystical thriller drama. Director Karthik has maintained the suspense in the story very well. Moreover, he shot the horror scenes very well.  The main strength of this movie is that it is made in the background of a periodical action thriller. The visuals and sound effects in this movie are very good. The story takes an unexpected turn from the pre-interval and the main villain is designed in a way that no one expected. Love scenes in this movie could have been better.
