THE minimum requirement of cumulative grade point average (CGPA) set by the Higher Education Commission (HEC) for admission to a PhD programme is 3.0 out of 4.0 in the semester system. On the contrary, the prerequisite for enrolment in PhD in India is much lesser; 6.75 out of 10.00, which is equivalent to 2.70 in our broadly-implemented system of 4.00 CGPA.
The high requirement of CGPA limits the spectrum of PhD, which in turn limits the number of PhDs in the country and that is not something valued much by the international community. Being a progressive nation and considering the literacy and per capita income, the HEC should not set such high criteria that restrict students` options.
The HEC should reconsider the eligibility requirement and should lower the required CGPA to 2.70. This will facilitate the research culture in the country.
