Free PowerPoint ® research poster templates in various sizes & styles.

If you don't see the specific dimensions you want, use a template that is the same proportion and we will correctly scale it at the time of printing. because powerpoint does not allow dimensions greater than 56", we use scaled templates for the larger poster sizes. our 42x90 templates are actually sized at 21x45 which we then print at 200%. tip: before selecting a template, bear in mind that most poster session boards have a one-inch metal frame. reducing the poster by a few inches allows it to mount flat on the board without the edges curling. if you are allowed a 48" x 48" space, we recommend using a 44" x 44" template. similarly, for a 48" x 96" board, we recommend no larger than a 42" x 90" template.    click here to see a comparison of how they fit on a board..

PowerPoint does not allow a filet to use dimensions greater than 56″ so if you need a very large poster size, can use a scaled template. For instance, for a 94×94 poster size dimension, use the 42×42 poster and scale it 200%.

How to use the poster templates?

If you are using Microsoft PowerPoint, download the .pptx version and open it in PowerPoint. It is compatible with Mac and PC (Windows).

If you are using Google Slides to design your poster presentation, click View on Google Slides and then go to File -> Make a Copy to create your own copy of the presentation. Starting from this point you’d be able to edit the poster and add your own data, images and content.

Can I edit the poster presentations?

Yes. Poster templates can be edited to fit your presentation needs. Remember to save your changes. You can edit the presentation by adding your own content, data charts and images. It is possible to replace the top left logo by any logo image you want or remove it completely if it is not required. You can also remove the footer with our logo, notes and comments.

Poster designs are fully customizable and can be edited to change colors with a few clicks. The poster presentation format follow most standard US and international poster sizes and supports different versions of PowerPoint. Only basic PowerPoint skills are required. The poster templates can be used for research posters, in any scientific poster designs or as a conference posters.

Standard poster sizes to choose from

Once you decide which design you are interested in, you will have to choose the size. We offer most standard poster sizes, including options for virtual poster presentations. Please be aware that we display our template size options in short side x long side regardless of orientation, NOT width x height . 

Proportions and scaling

We have added a graphic with each of our starter templates to make it easier to see how big your poster will be when printed. The blue area behind the human figure represents a four-foot-high by eight-foot-wide (48x96) display board commonly used in conference venues. The orange area represents your poster. We also indicate alternate sizes for this template that are directly proportional to each other. For example, let's say you downloaded and used a 36x72 poster template, only to find out later that you needed a larger poster. You will be able to print your template as a 42x84 or 48x96 poster without risking any distortion.

Elements of a Poster

Change size in powerpoint, using the ruler, grid, and guides in powerpoint, more powerpoint training, template resources, font choice, text alignment.

• Colors and Images

Your poster should include these elements:

• Author(s), with affiliations and emails

If your poster is a representation of a research study, you will want to include the following sections:

• Introduction or objective
• Conclusions and/or discussion
• Acknowledgements

If your poster is a representation of an event or other kind of project, you may want to forego formal abstract sections in favor of the 5 Ws:

• Who (introduce the author, organization, or community)
• What (what did you do? how did you do it?)
• Where (where did you do it?)
• When (when did it take place?)
• Why (what are the outcomes, implications, or future possibilities?)

To change the size in Powerpoint:

• Go to the Design tab and choose "Slide Size" (it's on the right size of the ribbon)
• Choose "Custom Slide Size"
• Change "Slides sized for:" to "Custom"
• Fill in your desired width and height. 

Click the View tab to see checkboxes that will allow you to turn on the Ruler, Grid, and Guides (click the image below to see a screenshot).

Ruler : Allows you to see the dimensions of your slide. You'll see a vertical and horizontal ruler.

Grid : By default, the gridlines are 1 inch apart. Right click in white space of your poster to get more options for spacing. This enables precise alignment.

Guides : By default, you'll get one horizontal and one vertical guide placed in the center of your poster. Right click on a guide to add more guidelines, or to delete one. You can use Guides to invisibly define columns of your poster, margins, and more. This gives you manual control, alternatively, you can use Smart Guides (see below).

Smart Guides : Powerpoint has a built-in system for showing you alignment as you move objects around. The video below demonstrates what Smart Guides look like.

Once you've got your slide layout set, you'll want to start creating Shapes and Text Boxes. Here are some tips and tricks for working with objects:

• Use Ctrl+D to duplicate any object.
• Then you can format them all at once, identically!
• You can also group them, for easier movement and alignment (right click to see the Group option).

Most posters are landscape (horizontal) orientation. The title/author(s) will be across the top, with 3–4 columns below that contain the rest of the poster elements. Make sure you leave plenty of white space in your design—a poster crammed full of text and images is very difficult to read.

• The body of your poster should have a minimum 24 point font . Viewers should be able to read your smallest text from a few feet away.
• The title of your poster should have a 50+ font size, depending on the size of your poster and the length of the title.
• Do not use all uppercase letters for the title or body of the poster.
• Avoid using more than 2 or 3 different fonts in one poster.
• Stick with basic fonts like Times New Roman or Georgia for serif, or Arial or Helvetica for sans-serif. Avoid elaborate, difficult-to-read, or cartoon-like fonts.

• In general, left-align your text boxes (with the possible exception of your title and any image captions). Avoid centering the text on your whole poster.
