Sport Management is a growing academic discipline in the United States as well as globally.  The Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Sport Management at Troy University is a terminal degree focusing on student comprehension and interpretation of contemporary, theoretical and applied studies within the field of Sport Management. The mission of the program is to prepare the graduate for a broad range of sport management-related positions to include, but not limited to higher education, research, professional or amateur athletics, and professional sport industry.  The doctoral program in Sport Management is the is one of the few Ph.D. programs that is offered primarily online in the United States. The program concentrates on developing students to generate the research, critical thinking, and teaching skills necessary for them to be successful in the sport industry and higher education. The coursework in the Ph.D. program provides an interdisciplinary approach to the study of sport management that is intended to build upon each student’s interests. Through areas of specialized coursework and doctoral seminars taught by graduate sport management faculty members, the program offers flexibility for students to analyze a wide variety of opportunities and interests within the discipline of sport management (i.e., organizational management, finance, legal aspects, and marketing of sports). The Ph.D. in Sport Management program at Troy University serves two primary populations: the sport practitioner and the future sport management educator. Thus, the graduate will be prepared to apply research to the sport industry, contribute to the advancement and dissemination of scholarly research, and/or educate future sport managers. Official scores from nationally standardized aptitude examinations, such as the Graduate Record Examination (GRE), Miller’s Analogy Test (MAT), General Management Admissions Test (GMAT), or Law School Admissions Test (LSAT) are not required for admissions consideration; however, official scores may be submitted at the time of application by those students who feel the results of their examinations will enhance their admissions application.

  • The goal of the writing sample is to measure the applicant’s ability to write clearly and succinctly in an academic fashion. The writing sample may include a thesis completed by the student, a significant research or case study class project, preferably written at the graduate level. It is expected that the applicant be either the first or second author if the submission was a group project. The paper must be double spaced, 12 point, Times New Roman font with 1 inch margins on all sides. Since the American Psychological Association (APA) style is followed in all written assignments in the Ph.D. program, it is recommended that the sample also be written in APA format. However, other writing styles, including but not limited to Chicago, Modern Language Association (MLA), Turbian, AMA Manual or other accepted research writing styles, will be considered. Note: The writing sample could also include an accepted or published research that the applicant was either the sole or co-author of a research project. The applicant must submit a pdf of the paper or a link as proof of publication.

Applications to the Ph.D. program may be submitted twice per academic year, once in fall and once is spring. The applicant must submit an application to the Troy University Graduate School. After all required documentation has been submitted, the applicant’s entire application packet will be reviewed for admission into the Doctoral Program. No pre-requisites will be required for admission other than the applicant must have attained a Master’s degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher education. In order to be given full consideration, all requested materials must be received by the deadlines listed below:

While graduation rates are provided only for first time undergraduate students, we felt this was still important to consider for our list an indicator of the level of support students receive while earning their degree. To be considered for our list, schools must hold regional accreditation, feature hands on training and internship or field experiences, and have a curriculum taught by doctorate level faculty. Where there are ties, we favored the school with the lower graduate tuition rate. From our list, we created a rating system as seen below to select our top 10 doctorate programs in sport management.

At the conference level, each individual conference (such as the American Athletic Conference, the Big 10, or the Southeastern Conference) has many of the same job titles as the NCAA headquarters but they operate to serve a smaller number of institutions and can therefore cater their attention to the specific needs of their member affiliates.

On-campus jobs can vary from the top down. There is typically one Vice President for Athletics with many Associate or Senior Athletics Directors under him or her who oversee different departments such as Athletic Training, Marketing and Communications, Compliance, etc. At the middle-management level sport management degrees can help you land jobs as a development officer, sports information director, compliance officer, or director of operations for one or more teams.

Coaching or Recruitment

Perhaps one of the most practical applications of an advanced degree in sport management is as a coach or recruitment specialist. There are several agencies here in the United States and also abroad that exist to help educate, promote, and secure scholarships for their perspective student-athlete clients. Coaching, of course, is the purest form of sport management! Engaging with student-athletes, developing their skills, and helping them to achieve success on and off the field of play while managing all of the behind-the-scenes administrative work like uniforms, equipment, travel, and budget are all skills that can be enhanced by a sports management degree.

Program overview.

Students pursuing a PhD in Sport Management develop scholarly and research competence, culminating in an original doctoral dissertation contributing to the body of knowledge in sport business. The program is designed for students who intend to make their careers as scholars, teachers, researchers, and professionals in economics, marketing, philanthropy, and urban development, as they pertain to sport business.

Each doctoral student works closely with a faculty advisor from the beginning of their degree program. Under their faculty advisor’s guidance, they are expected to take relevant coursework, engage in relevant research experiences (lab rotations, independent study projects, etc.), generate research ideas, and complete a research dissertation prior to graduation. 

A principal goal of doctoral student training is achieving competence as an independent scholar. This entails not only proficiency in research but in the dissemination of knowledge. To achieve this, students learn to guide the learning of others as a Graduate Student Research Assistant (GSRA) or Graduate Student Instructor (GSI). 

Doctoral students and their faculty advisors will form a Guidance Committee, Qualifying Examination Committee, and a Dissertation Committee to provide advice and evaluate student progress at successive stages of the program. 

Sport Management PhD Curriculum

PhD students choose from a set of core courses in Kinesiology, as well as cognate courses from other units, and complete a minimum of 30 pre-candidacy credits beyond the master's level. Qualifying examinations must be passed before advancing to candidacy, after which the student completes an original doctoral dissertation. A minimum of 50 credits including pre-candidacy and candidacy work must be completed to graduate.

The courses you take will vary, depending on your educational goals. Courses taken for graduate credit will carry SM or KINESLGY program codes, and are numbered 500 and above.

About the Program

Isenberg’s PhD in sport management is a full-time, residential program that prepares students for careers in academia. Students receive broad training in research methods and learn to apply advanced business understanding to sport subject matter. With small class sizes, students enjoy individualized instruction from faculty. Valuable teaching opportunities prime students to become educators at leading institutions.

Students generally complete a PhD in Sport Management within 4-5 years. Students must pass both a qualifying and comprehensive examination, and complete three years of teaching at Isenberg. During the final years students research, write, and defend a dissertation.

Students must take 48 credits of coursework, which includes classes in theory and research methods, research electives, and minor classes.

Sports marketing is an opportunity to use sports – and indeed entertainment – to explore some important marketing concepts that are used in many areas such as inconsistent product; loyalty; celebrity management; event execution; crisis interventions; sponsorships and partnerships; ticket pricing; social media and digital innovation; tie-ins between retail and teams.  

 Much of the course concentrates on marketing and business. Some will take the course because they are passionate about sports and will use that sports interest to become deeper practitioners in the world of marketing and business, including theory, ethics, legal and financial considerations. Some won’t be avid sports fans but will be interested in a well-rounded knowledge of marketing.  

 Sports marketing is nuanced. It may mean how a team is marketed, but it may also mean how a soft drink uses a fan base to reach an audience. The course considers areas such as pricing and these issues translate to other fields so while sports may be how we study the subject, sports becomes the means to ensure that marketing and business understanding is accessible. 

 Sports is a lens to learn because it delivers passion and excitement on a global basis and brings people together even during competitive moments. There are many job opportunities in sports marketing, from consumer product companies looking to attract fans to teams looking for storytellers.

The Sport Management PhD concentration at the Louisiana State University is offered by the School of Kinesiology as a degree program which focuses on developing a variety of academic skills to help students become successful in academic and/or scholarly endeavors. Students accepted into the PhD program will receive training toward careers in academia or professional positions of similar or related career fields. Specifically, students will be provided the opportunity to receive and demonstrate critical thinking and research skills through an interdisciplinary approach which centers on the student’s research interests and career ambitions. Building on a foundation of sport management courses, independent studies, and mentoring opportunities with the program’s faculty members, students will, through elective coursework (i.e., cognate area) explore a wide variety of management issues related to the field of sport. Such interests may include areas related to Organizational Behavior and Theory, Facility Management, Law and Legal Applications, Finance and Accounting, Economics, History, and Social Issues to name a few. Finally, unique among graduate programs, LSU offers real opportunities to teach lecture courses in our undergraduate Sport Administration program to help prepare PhD students and candidates for careers in academia. Courses available for doctoral students and candidates at LSU include the basic core of most undergraduate and graduate curriculums (e.g., marketing and promotions, law and ethics, finance, introduction to sport industry, social issues, etc.). Overall, the PhD opportunity at LSU allows students the flexibility to carve their niche within the sport industry to better serve the interest of the academy and their own natural curiosity.

The PhD in Kinesiology with a specialization in Sport Management graduate program is accredited by the Commission on Sport Management Accreditation (COSMA). Admission Requirements

  • Master's Degree in Sport Administration or a related field (with a cumulative GPA of a 3.00 or higher)
  • Three (3) reference names
  • One (1) letter of recommendation
  • Applicants will choose from a list of topics.
  • Applicant will then research that topic and support with 4-6 sources.
  • Applicant will write a 2-3 page paper (roughly 1,000 words), must cite in APA, and include a reference page.
  • Why UC? What are their career goals related to completing this degree? Which faculty member are they wanting as an advisor?.

Our program will support student career goals that range from faculty, administrative, practitioner/athletics, and alt-academic careers. We will provide resources in our seminar classes, particularly our SMGT 9040: Professional Development and Career Exploration course, that will inform students of their options and resources across a wealth of career outlets.

We also have a dedicated Doctoral Sport Administration Group that will house regular meetings to discuss theory, teaching, research, service, career ideas, conferences, interviewing, negotiation, and other topics designed to help students be successful during and after they’ve completed our program.

The Sport Administration PhD program graduates are well-equipped for a wide range of career opportunities in academia, higher education, and the sport industry. With advanced research and analytical skills, graduates can pursue careers as professors, researchers, consultants, and executives in sports organizations, athletic departments, and related industries. Getting Started

Your starting point with the Sport Marketing and Management major is with required introductory courses that allow to you explore all facets of the sports industry. You'll also be able to focus on your specific interests by taking a wide range of elective courses in sport marketing, sporting events, sport sales, sport administration, sport operations, analytics, and many more.

Students will take these courses during the first year:

Introduction to Sport Management

  • An examination of the broad spectrum of career opportunities available in the sport management profession. Special emphasis on career planning, sport management terminology, and an overview of specific skills and courses required for professional preparation in sport management.

Introduction to Sport Communication

  • An introduction to the area of sport communication. Emphasis is placed on the fields within sport communication, including, but not limited to: sport information, public relations, media relations, player relations, radio and TV sports production, marketing and research, interactive media, media trends, production competencies, and employment options and trends.

Through the initial coursework, you'll develop an understanding of the industry expectations, all while engaging in practical experiences that help build your skills.

Tracks and concentrations

The Sport Marketing and Management major does not have official areas of concentration. Instead, students choose elective courses to fit their desired area(s) of interest. Some students take a variety of approved courses, while others choose to focus in a specific area.

Upper-level coursework

Upper-level coursework builds off of your introductory courses. Once you've completed your core coursework in sports law, marketing, communication, business, management, psychology, and finance, you'll apply what you have learned directly to the field through a required practicum or internship experience.

You'll gain practical, hands-on experience by working with IU faculty on research projects . You'll also get firsthand professional experience through an internship in your area of interest. Internship coordinators are faculty members who will help you navigate the internship process and ultimately approve your internship placement.

Our fantastic Career Services Office supports students throughout the career search process. Sport Marketing and Management students are required to complete at least one internship or practicum experience for academic credit. Students enrolled in the program come from all over the country and world. Class size varies from 50 – 250 students depending on the Sport Marketing and Management course.

The Sport Marketing and Management major is a great choice for students who are passionate about the sports industry and delivering a superior fan experience. Elective courses allow students to tailor the degree to fit their interests. The practical, experiential curriculum covers all aspects of the industry, so no matter where your career takes you in the future, you’ll be prepared.

Welcome! Health and Sports Science is an exciting career path for those individuals with a passion for health and exercise. Students pursuing an Associate degree in Health and Sports Science will study human movement and how it applies to the way people exercise, play sports, and move their bodies in their everyday lives.

Students will study human movement through a variety of topics including health, exercise science, physical education, nutrition, exercise and health psychology, anatomy, physiology, motor behavior, and biomechanics.

Students will receive practical hands-on experiences in our on-site fitness center; however, due to the nature of the major, health and sport science classes often require additional experience through a variety of physical and recreational activities outside of the classroom. This allows students the opportunity to not only develop their overall health and well-being but to also feel comfortable and prepared to go out and actually do your work when you graduate or go on to pursue an advanced degree or national certification offered by the American College of Sports Medicine.

Department Overview

Rose State College offers an Associate of Science in Health and Sport Science as well as three embedded certificate programs. To suit your interests and career goals, you can choose between three options of study:  Personal Training, Exercise Fitness Management, and Health, Physical Education and Recreation.

Associate of Science degree, Health and Sports Science

            Options:

  • Health, Physical Education and Recreation

The Personal Training option prepares students to do one-on-one fitness programing. This option prepares students to take the National Strength and Conditioning Association Certified Personal Training exam and/or to transfer to a four-year institution to complete a baccalaureate degree upon completion of the Associate in Science degree.

The Exercise/Fitness Management option provides students with the necessary foundation to transfer to a related baccalaureate degree program at a college or university. Students entering this field of study should be seeking a career in Health and Sports Sciences in a variety of environments such as corporate wellness, health/fitness clubs, education programs, and personal trainers.

The Health, Physical Education and Recreation option prepares students to transfer to a college or university baccalaureate program in a related field. This program will also help prepare the student for employment in a variety of areas including YMCA's, colleges and universities, recreational sports, aquatics, military programs and more.

Embedded Certificates:

The 24-credit hour Personal Training certificate program prepares students who are interested in Health and Sport Sciences to transfer to four-year institution to pursue a major or minor in Health and Sport Sciences and/or work in physical therapy programs, personal training studios, wellness centers, fitness facilities, weight loss clinics, and sport strength and conditioning facilities.

The 20-credit hour Exercise Fitness Management certificate program prepares students who are interested in Health and Sport Sciences to transfer to four-year institutions to pursue a major or minor in Health and Sport Sciences and/or work in hospital-based cardiac rehabilitation programs, worksite wellness programs, group fitness instruction, fitness facilities, sports programs, physical education, and weight loss clinics.

The 20-credit hour Health, Physical Education and Recreation certificate program prepares students who are interested in Health and Sport Sciences to transfer to four-year institutions to pursue a major or minor in Health and Sport Sciences and/or work in physical education, wellness centers, group fitness instruction, fitness facilities, sports programs, and child recreation programs. Caitlin Clark's college GPA emerges as Indiana Fever star makes decision on Iowa degree

C aitlin Clark will return to Iowa as a student, intending to finish her degree and graduate. And it appears she's on track to complete her education with an impressive GPA after her grades were recently revealed.

One of the top college basketball prospects to ever enter the WNBA, the Indiana Fever were the lucky team to land the first overall pick with a generational talent such as Clark available for selection.

Clark had a decision to make last season, with another year of eligibility open to her where she could have broken further college basketball records before undoubtedly being the first pick in the 2025 WNBA Draft.

However, Clark decided to make the step up this year, leaving behind what was a legendary career with her alma mater. Clark still intends to return to the school to finish her learning, though.

In her introductory press conference with the Indiana Fever, Clark said: "I would love to be on the Olympic team, and be in Paris. But that’s not up to me. I actually still need to earn my degree, too; I need to graduate college first, or else my mom might kill me."

This past week, Clark was named the 2023-24 Academic All-America Team Member of the Year - marking the second consecutive year that she had been named to the list.

A graphic from the academy revealed that Clark, a marketing major, boasts an impressive 3.64 GPA.

While Clark will continue to study to graduate as a marketing major, she will also prepare to begin her WNBA career. The regular season will begin on May 14.

Clark joins the Fever off the back of an incredible senior year as a Hawkeye, smashing a multitude of records and amassing the most points ever scored in both men's and women's college basketball - averaging 31.6 points in her final year while registering 8.9 assists and 7.6 rebounds.

After being drafted, Clark told reporters: "This is a dream, this is something I wrote down on a piece of paper when I was in, like, second grade. Get a basketball scholarship. Play in the WNBA . This is something I've always wanted to do."

The Fever will look to Clark to transform their fortunes after they won just 21 games in their last two seasons before acquiring the Iowa superstar.

Clark has opened up as the fourth favorite to win the WNBA's MVP award in her rookie season, behind A'ja Wilson, Breanna Stewart and Alyssa Thomas.
