Healthcare Jobs

There are very high demands for workers across the health sector.  The government recently introduced a fast-track to residency pathway for some specific occupations.

Healthworkers needed now

A growing population, with an increasing proportion of elderly; increasing health needs and rising health expectations; and an aging health workforce are all combining to create skill shortages across the sector.

Willem Landman:

I’m an emergency medicine specialist, I’m originally from South Africa and currently I’m the Clinical Director of Waitemata DHB emergency department. I’ve been working in this organisation for 8 years now and I’m loving every minute of it.

Waitemata District Health Board is responsible for about 500 thousand people, by itself we are comfortably the largest district health board in the country.

We are located right on Lake Pupuke and adjacent to some of the best beaches in New Zealand.

Generally the lifestyle in Auckland is one of the best in the world. Auckland was voted one of the top 10 cities in the world to live in.

New Zealand is really looking to innovate and develop technologies and systems and be a world leader in terms of innovation, and we have to given the size and location of our country so, really we have a unique mix of elements that allows us to become world leaders, and we are world leaders in a lot of innovative work.

There’s lots of opportunities for Doctors, Nurses, other health care professionals anywhere in New Zealand a very large proportion of health care workforce is foreign trained.

So your walking down the corridors in a hospital in New Zealand, it’s like walking through the corridors of the United Nations.

Those arriving in New Zealand with a specialist qualification would need to look for whether their qualification is recognised in New Zealand and often times, even if it isn’t recognised at least a component of their specialist training will be recognised and, they can do bridging work to have their specialty completely recognised.

So we’re very fortunate in New Zealand where much of the focus in healthcare is on the patient rather than directly on the finances. Our decisions are based more on ethical considerations rather than financial considerations.

New Zealand has just the most phenomenal lifestyle available as far as I’m concerned. Its just a wonderful combination of outdoor living, water sports, the sea, tramping and then you’ve got the New Zealand culture which is just such a wonderful family friendly, child friendly culture and safe too.

Its surreal living here coming from somewhere like South Africa but I hear the same from colleagues that come from elsewhere in the world. We’re just so protected over here so, if you like the outdoors and you like community living I think you’re going to struggle to find a better country in the world.

Up to one in five nurses will be looking to retire in the next five years. At the same time nurse training enrolments have been falling.

Many GPs too are retiring, creating shortages in that speciality.

Amongst specialists, the Association of Salaried Medical Specialists (ASMS) estimates shortages at 24% with psychiatry, anaesthetics, dermatology and neurology particularly affected.

The challenges are not unique to New Zealand, but they do mean there are plenty of opportunities for healthcare professionals in our country.

medical research job opportunities in new zealand

Dr Antonios Chasouris, Greece

One thing I like about New Zealand is, because of a shortage of skills, an all-round therapist like me can apply all his skills. For example, I have studied educational difficulties, clinical psychology and behavioural therapy, so under the mental health system in New Zealand, I can do a lot of things, which I love.

Read his full story

New Zealand has a mixed public/private healthcare model. Each sector offers high standards of care. The public system is much larger, accounting for over 80% of total healthcare spend.

In total we have around 220 hospitals and 20 Districts managing public healthcare in different region.

With such an extensive healthcare system there are opportunities for healthcare professionals covering every discipline or specialty.

In the public system, essential healthcare services such as emergency care, essential surgery, and hospital care are provided free for all New Zealand residents and those living here on a work visa valid for two years or longer. Visits to general practitioners (family doctors) are paid for by the individual patient.

Operating alongside the public system, private healthcare offers access to private hospitals for treating both urgent and non-urgent conditions (excluding Accident and Emergency care). The network of private hospitals and clinics provides a range of services that include recuperative care, elective procedures and a range of general surgical procedures. There are also private radiology clinics and testing laboratories.

New Zealand puts about 10% of its GDP into healthcare, around the OECD average.

New Zealand hospitals and general practices are modern and well equipped. You’ll find the atmosphere positive and friendly – they’re great places to work.

Healthcare-jobs---Nurse-%26-patient.jpg

Standards are high. For example, the government’s Health Quality & Safety Commission reports that New Zealand performs well internationally on patient safety and measures of effectiveness while surveys show consistently positive results for patient experiences.

An international workforce

You won't feel out of place working in a New Zealand hospital or medical practice. For example, over 40% of the 17,000 doctors registered with the New Zealand Medical Council in 2019 were international medical graduates. Amongst practising nurses, 27% were internationally qualified.

Getting started

The first step is finding a job. Research where your skills will best fit and which employers are looking for your expertise. And make sure that your qualifications are recognised in New Zealand.

At the same time you should register with the relevant medical body eg. the Medical Council of New Zealand for doctors, or the Nursing Council of New Zealand for nurses.

The website Kiwi Health Jobs lists job vacancies available at the Te Whatu Ora - Health New Zealand local districts around the country.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can i work in new zealand.

MCNZ (Medical Council of New Zealand) registered doctors have a plethora of opportunities available for them to find both permanent and locum positions. If you are an Australian-trained doctor, you can work in New Zealand by obtaining MCNZ registration, and we are here to support you throughout this process. If you're looking for New Zealand jobs for foreign doctors who obtained their primary medical degree from medical schools overseas, it is beneficial to have at least 12 months of experience in a comparable health system such as the UK or Ireland. Working in New Zealand as an internationally trained doctor involves navigating certain pathways and considering specific restrictions. However, rest assured that we are well-versed in these processes and can guide you accordingly. Our goal is to simplify the process and help you embark on a successful medical career in beautiful New Zealand.

Where is the work in New Zealand?

There are a wide range of full time and part time jobs for doctors in New Zealand, for both specialist doctors and general practitioners across various locations. While a lot of locum work is available in rural areas, it's important to note that there are doctor job vacancies in urban centres as well. Lots of doctors we work with love using locum roles as an opportunity to experience unique corners of the country. The distribution of work also depends on your preferred type of employment. Long-term positions provide stability and continuity, while fixed-term contracts offer the chance to gain diverse experiences in different healthcare settings. Additionally, the availability of work is influenced by your specialty and level of experience. Certain areas may have a higher demand for specific medical specialties, presenting more opportunities in those fields.

Do you charge a fee to doctors?

Nope! Our service is free for doctors. We have established strong partnerships with hospitals and clinics across the country, and they compensate us for our expertise in matching qualified doctors to their staffing needs. We are proud to be preferred suppliers in several states and areas, a testament to our successful track record. Working with a medical recruitment agency means we'll take care of the hiring and credentialing process, so you can focus on the next steps in your medical career.

What paperwork will I need to apply for roles?

Your registration number, a current CV and three references are the essentials of any job application. Other paperwork that's commonly required is:

  • Evidence of vaccinations,
  • Evidence of your degree/fellowship,
  • Annual Practicing Certificates,
  • A certified copy of your passport and/or driver’s licence,
  • Police vetting form.

What you'll need can vary slightly between Australian states and in New Zealand. Some states/locations also ask you complete an online training course (eMedical Courses). We're here to help guide you through the requirements and we'll give you a checklist detailing everything you need.

How will I get paid?

The method of payment for doctors varies depending on the specific hospital or clinic where they work. There are generally three ways in which doctors can receive payment:

  • As an employee: In this scenario, the hospital or clinic directly employs the doctor, and they receive regular salary payments as per the employment agreement.
  • As a contractor: Some doctors work on a contractual basis, where they provide services to the hospital or clinic as an independent contractor. In this case, the doctor may invoice for their services and receive payment based on the agreed terms and conditions.
  • Medrecruit direct payment: In certain cases, we handles the payment process and pays the doctor directly for their services. This method simplifies the payment process and ensures a smooth and efficient financial transaction.

The specific payment arrangement for each job can be confirmed by your dedicated recruitment specialist. They will provide you with detailed information regarding how you will be paid for each position you undertake, taking into account factors such as private billing, if applicable, and any specific payment arrangements set by the hospital or clinic.

How long does it take to obtain medical registration in New Zealand?

The timeframe for obtaining medical registration in New Zealand can vary depending on individual circumstances. The process involves several steps, including verification of qualifications, assessments, and submission of supporting documentation. Generally, it can take several months to complete. To obtain medical registration, applicants must provide evidence of their qualifications, complete the necessary paperwork, and satisfy the Medical Council of New Zealand’s requirements . The council evaluates each application on an individual basis and may request additional information or assessments as needed. It's important to note that the process may take longer for internationally trained doctors, as their qualifications and experience are assessed for comparability with New Zealand standards . Our goal is to facilitate a smooth transition into the New Zealand healthcare system, allowing you to pursue your medical career in this remarkable country.

Are doctors in demand in New Zealand?

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.
