i'm done with all my assignments

You want to know how to say you’ve finished a task, right?

Well, it’s certainly important to sound confident and sincere when your boss asks you for a status update.

Luckily, this article is here to help.

So, we’ll show you how to say a task has been completed to give you some ideas about staying as formal and polite as possible.

Other Ways to Say “I Have Completed the Task”

  • The task is finished
  • I’ve just wrapped up the task
  • I’ve concluded the task
  • I have accomplished what you asked of me
  • I’ve successfully executed the task
  • The task is done and dusted
  • I’ve carried out the task
  • I’ve finalized the task
  • The task is now completed
  • I’ve fulfilled my responsibility
  • I’ve performed the task as required
  • The task has been resolved
  • I’ve met the requirements of the task

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • “I have completed the task” is simple and correct, as it works to politely inform your boss you’ve done what they’ve asked.
  • Try “the task is finished” is a simple yet effective formal synonym to show you’ve done a task as requested.
  • “I’ve just wrapped up the task” is a great informal synonym that works well in most email formats.

So, keep reading to learn how to say a task is done in an email. We’ve covered the two best phrases to teach you what to say when you complete a task to impress your boss.

You can also read the final section to learn if it’s correct to say “I have completed the task.” We recommend skipping ahead if you’re trying to use it in your emails.

The Task Is Finished (Formal)

For something a little more formal, you can write “the task is finished.” This is a great way to tell your boss you’ve completed a task .

For instance, you can use it after your boss sets you an assignment. They might have given you a deadline, and they may now be asking whether you succeeded in completing the task.

Using a phrase like this is direct and respectful . It shows that you’ve done what they’ve asked you to do.

Also, it shows you’re a diligent worker . This could work in your favor moving forward, as it means your boss will come back to you if they need you.

Also, here’s a great email sample to show you how it might work:

Dear Miss Bracket, The task is finished , and I’ve also completed it to the standards you asked of me. Of course, please let me know what you think. All the best, Tulip Weiss

I’ve Just Wrapped Up the Task (Informal)

You can let your supervisor know your progress by saying “I’ve just wrapped up the task.”

This certainly keeps things more informal and shows that you have a friendly relationship with your supervisor.

Generally, this phrase is great to include when you’re happy to report on the progress of a task. It still shows that you’ve done everything you need to, but it does it in a more conversational tone.

Of course, it’s a bit more informal, so you won’t be able to use it in every situation. It’s best to avoid using it when speaking directly to your boss, just in case they disapprove of the tone.

This email example should also help you to understand a bit more about it:

Hi Ted, I’ve just wrapped up the task that you asked me to complete! So, let me know what you think when you review it. Thanks so much, Alex Peters

Is It Correct to Say “I Have Completed the Task”?

It is correct to say “I have completed the task.” It’s a simple way to let your boss know that you’ve completed something they’ve set for you.

Generally, you would include it in a formal response email when your boss asks for an update .

For instance:

Dear Miss Jeffries, I have completed the task as you asked of me. Please let me know if I need to do anything else. Best, Sean Michaela

You may also find a slightly more informal variation in the following:

  • I have done the task.

Switching “completed” for “done” is a great way to sound more friendly and casual . Of course, this limits when it’s usable in an email.

You can also refer to these extensions to see what to say when you send an email to your manager:

  • I have completed the task assigned to me
  • I have completed the task yesterday
  • I have already completed the task

And finally, it’s worth exploring these variations to find other options that work:

  • I have completed all the tasks
  • I have completed the training
  • I have completed the survey
  • I have completed the assessment
  • I have completed the assignment
  • 13 Other Ways to Say “Thank You for Your Insight”

Let's Stay in Touch

Early Finisher Activities for Students Who Say, “I’m Done!”

“I’m done!” It’s a phrase that every teacher has heard before. While it’s common to have students who need more time to finish assignments, there are also the ones who breeze through it quicker than you can say, “Slow down and check your work.” Early finisher activities are therefore a must-have!

And it is key to have meaningful options for your faster finishers. Busy work isn’t exactly the best “reward” after completing the required work. When it comes to quality early finisher activities, student choice and high engagement are the key ingredients.

If you’re in need of some ideas to help meet the needs of your more efficient little workers, feel free to pick and choose through this list of early finisher activities.

Activity #1: Choice Boards

Speaking of pick and choose…choice boards allow students to do exactly that! They are a great way to encourage student choice (and increase the buy-in factor). Choice boards can be simply printed on a sheet of paper, displayed on an actual board, or even accessed digitally.

Choice boards can include anything from spiral review, to hands-on activities, to creative projects. In fact, any of the activities shared in this blog post could be added to a Choice Board.

If you type in “Choice Boards” on Teachers Pay Teachers and check the price filter box that says “Free,” there are tons of free options for printable choice boards.

As far as paid resources go, I’m a fan of this particular one from A Cupcake for the Teacher. It has a nice variety of everyday activities, plus ones that are themed for each month.

i'm done with all my assignments

Activity #2: Class Mailbox

This early finisher activity is a great way to practice writing skills and build classroom community at the same time.

Have a designated class mailbox where students can send letters to other students, or even the teacher. It doesn’t have to be fancy. You can use a paper tray or some sort of container, or even have the kids themselves help make or decorate one. Another option is to utilize a toy mailbox, like the one Class Mailbox “>here .

Place writing paper, envelopes, and even stickers near the mailbox. When students finish an assignment early, they can write a letter to have “delivered” to someone in class. It doubles as reading practice too- win win!

Activity #3: Jenga

From my own experience- whenever Jenga is an option for early finishers, it is always one of the most popular activities that kids pick first! You can use Color Jenga “>these colored Jenga blocks or just color the edges of regular Jenga blocks.

With a partner or in a small group, one student rolls the color dice (or can pick a color if you colored your own blocks). For whichever color rolled or chosen, he or she draws a matching color card with a problem/question. Here’s an example of cards pictured below, for a math fact family game.

i'm done with all my assignments

All players solve the problem and record their answer on their recording sheet, and check their answers together. Then, the initial player who drew the card gets to move a color block. And repeat!

The kids can’t get enough of it, especially since you can keep the game fresh all year by easily switching out the cards for different skill practice. You only have to teach the game once, and can then use it as an engaging early finisher activity for the whole school year.

In case it might save you any time, I have a ton of pre-made print-and-go Jenga games for math, phonics, grammar, sight words, and more. There is also an editable template of the recording sheet and color cards above to be able to create your own problems or questions. All of the details are in this blog post .

Activity #4: Guess Who Games

As you might have guessed from Activity #3, I love the use of games for early finisher activities. Here’s another one that’s based on a classic.

This Guess Who? math game is exactly like the original version except that instead of guessing “who” is on the card, students have to use their math skills and math vocabulary to guess “what” is on the card.

i'm done with all my assignments

The game pictured above is for place value, but there are also versions for:

  • Standard Form, Expanded Form, Word Form
  • Subtraction
  • Counting Money
  • Telling Time

You can get more details about Guess Who and all the different math versions by clicking right here .

Activity #5: Sticker Stories

Do your students love stickers? This simple writing activity is engaging for early finishers, especially if they enjoy using their creativity.

Keep a variety of stickers in an easily accessible place, such as a bin or basket. Students can get to choose a few of those stickers and grab a sheet of writing paper. They then use those stickers to create their own sentences and stories, and illustrate a picture to match.

For example, a student might have a sticker of a butterfly and a car. They might create a story and illustration where a butterfly goes along for a ride on someone’s car and explores a new place!

As a twist, you could allow students to insert stickers in place of actual words in the sentence. If the sentence was The caterpillar turned into a butterfly , for instance, the student would place a sticker where it would say butterfly instead of writing out the actual word.

You can get more ideas for sticker stories in this other blog post from Teach Junkie.

Activity #6: Engaging Word Work

Got word study lists for spelling, high frequency words, vocabulary, etc.? Hands-on word work activities are great for early finishers. There are all kind of ways students can practice their words, including:

  • Build a word (out of something tactile like letter magnets, Play-Doh, dot inkers, chalk, stamps, etc.)
  • Ghost words (write words in white crayon, and color over them with marker)
  • Word Typing

Here’s a visual of that third option (photo credit: Miss Learning Bee).

i'm done with all my assignments

What’s nice is that this doubles as keyboarding practice too. If you’ve ever tried to help 30 primary students log into their devices at the beginning of the year, you know that they need it!

There are all kinds of Keyboard covers “>colorful keyboard covers on Amazon that work well for this, and you could use a Business card holder “>business card holder to prop up the word card.

Another word work activity that kids love is Rainbow Roll and Write.

i'm done with all my assignments

This resource is on Teachers Pay Teachers and on my website . Bonus! It’s editable, so you can customize it for your students if needed.

And if you like to include vocabulary words with your Word Work, this graphic organizer is a freebie !

i'm done with all my assignments

You can also click here if you’d like more strategies and ideas for teaching vocabulary words.

And if you don’t have your own word lists, Merriam-Webster posts a word of the day everyday! Typically, they are words most people haven’t heard of, and therefore make for interesting word study. Those words lend themselves well to this graphic organizer too.

Activity #7: Special Interest Projects

What better way to engage your early finishers than through projects that interest them? Simply create a few project descriptions with instructions, and have them ready to go for early finishers. Then, allow students to choose what interests them. Here are a few ideas:

  • Create a comic book
  • Create an advertisement for your favorite product
  • Write a creative story
  • Create word problems for your classmates to solve
  • Design your own amusement park

You could even invite students to propose their own project ideas to you, and add them to the list!

Activity #8: Accountable Talk Board

This is one of my favorite ways to engage students in inquiry and to utilize bulletin boards in an interactive way.

i'm done with all my assignments

With this accountable talk board, students can pose questions or make statements that encourage discussion.

These posts could be related to something the class is currently learning about, something inspired by a book they’re reading, or just anything they might be wondering about.

For example, a student might write: “Why is it daytime here and nighttime in other places in the world?” or, “There should be no dress code at school.”

When a student finishes an activity early, they could have the option of going to the accountable talk board to engage. They might make their own post, and/or they can respond to a post from one of their classmates. The posts can be made on sticky notes.

i'm done with all my assignments

More details about this resource (and the links for creating this same bulletin board) are in this blog post .

Activity #9: Tech Time

If you have access to computers, laptops, or tablets in your classroom, here are some go-to educational sites for early finishers:

  • TED Ed – Have them watch a TED Ed video and summarize it.
  • IXL Learning – Great for math and reading practice.
  • Kahoot! – Find a Kahoot! and get the link for the independent mode.
  • Quizlet – Create a quizlet deck with word study words, vocabulary, or facts and have students practice.
  • WriteReader – Students can create their own novels and add images.
  • StoryBoardThat – Students can create a comic strip.

Activity #10: Good Old-Fashioned Reading

While tech can be a helpful academic tool, nothing beats a good ol’ book! When students finish work early, one of their choices could be independent reading. Simple as that, just help to promote a love of reading for pleasure!

If you’re wanting more accountability, you could have them read together with a partner, answer reflection questions as they read, or participate in a book club or literature circle.

Activity #11: Walk the Room

For students who get restless easily and thrive with movement (i.e., most kids) Walk the Room is an easy go-to activity for early finishers. It gets students out of their seats, but with a specific focus. Just be sure to set the behavior expectations beforehand, to help prevent them from disturbing others who are seated while working.

Here are some examples of Walk the Room activities (students could carry a clipboard with them for any of these):

  • For measurement math practice, students measure various objects around the classroom. You could have them estimate the measurement first, and then check with a ruler and record their findings.
  • Tape task cards around the room and have students answer them on a recording sheet.
  • Send students on a word hunt.

Here’s an example of a homophone word hunt. I placed different homophones around the room for kids to search for.

i'm done with all my assignments

If you teach homophones and like this activity, more on this resource right here !

Activity #12: Peer Helpers

If you can teach it, you know it. At least that’s what they say, right? And for good reason. Having your early finishers help other students is a great way to embrace collaboration in the classroom.

As you would with pretty much anything you introduce to your class, just again make sure to set clear guidelines for what peer helping means and what it looks like. And what it doesn’t mean (doing someone else’s work for them).

To aid students in how to be an effective peer helper, I’m a big fan of checklists. Students can refer to points or questions on a checklist as a guide.

Here are some peer helper checklists for writing, for example. Students use these to help their peers with editing a rough draft.

i'm done with all my assignments

For students who finish their work early during a writing block, getting to be a peer editor is a privilege that they jump at the chance to get to do! The baseball-themed writing checklists you see pictured above can be found by going here .

Activity #13: Teacher’s Helper

Early finisher activities don’t always have to be academic. Most elementary-age kids (especially in the primary grades) love to help out grown-ups at home or school. And that doesn’t always last as they get older…so why not enjoy it while we can, right? 😉

On a more serious note though, giving students the opportunity to help with special tasks encourages traits like responsibility and helpfulness. Here are some of those types of tasks:

  • Cleaning the whiteboard
  • Filing papers
  • Organizing materials
  • Picking up trash (they especially enjoy when you give them a magnet to pick up any staples on the floor)
  • Sharpening pencils

I’m sure there is no shortage of things on your to-do list, and there are plenty that students can help with!

Hopefully this list has helped get your wheels turning when it comes to early finisher activities! I’ve found from personal experience that there is no need to implement a ton of choices all at once. You may start with just a small few, and then add on more or change some out throughout the year, to help keep things fresh for your kiddos.

And truth be told, I’m writing this blog post on a Friday afternoon. Even though there’s always more work to be done, I’m deciding in this moment to be an “early finisher.” Turning off my laptop now and going to go enjoy the weekend! 😉

For teachers, work is never really done so to speak, so sometimes you just have to call it a day and leave it for another time. Hopefully you can soon find some time to step away as an early finisher yourself!

How to Get Homework Done when You Don't Want To

Last Updated: May 6, 2024 Fact Checked

Homework can be a drag, but it's got to be done to keep your grades up and stay on track during school. Going somewhere quiet, making a plan, and giving yourself breaks can all help you stay focused and on task to get your work done quickly. Try to keep your assignments organized and give yourself credit for completing hard or boring work, even if you didn’t want to.

Getting Motivated

Step 1 Pick an easy assignment to start with.

  • Keep a list of your assignments and check them off as you finish them. This can give you a sense of accomplishment that can motivate you to keep going.

Step 2 Work on your homework with your friends to keep each other motivated.

  • Make it the rule that you work for a certain amount of time, or until a certain amount of work has been accomplished. Afterward, you can hang out. Stick to this schedule.
  • Try this out and see if it works. If you're too distracted by having friends around, make a date to hang out after homework instead.

Step 3 Make completing assignments a competition with yourself.

  • Make sure you keep the competition to yourself. Competing with your friends isn’t fun, especially over homework assignments and grades.

Step 4 Understand why you’re doing homework so it doesn’t feel pointless.

  • Learning something that will probably help with future assignments, even if you don't know what they are yet.
  • Proving to your teacher that you understand the homework so that they don’t keep assigning it over and over.
  • Improving your GPA.
  • Getting a good grade.

Step 5 Reward yourself when you finish an assignment.

  • Try not to reward yourself with food, as that can lead to snacking when you aren’t really hungry.

Staying Focused

Step 1 Break your work up into 45-minute chunks.

  • For instance, tell yourself that if you finish your first assignment in 20 minutes, you can go on your phone for 5 minutes.

Step 2 Take 15-minute breaks.

  • Make sure you stand up and do something when it's your break, or you won't get your wiggles out.
  • Set a timer on your phone or use a kitchen timer to let yourself know when it's time to switch tasks.

Step 3 Incorporate your own interests into your assignments.

  • If you don't have control over the subject, try to find connections between the topic and something you care about. Find aspects of the subject that interest you.
  • For instance, if you have to study History but you care the most about fashion, investigate the styles of the times and places you are studying. Learn how political and economical developments changed the way people dressed.

Step 4 Listen to soothing music that isn’t distracting.

  • You can find playlists on Spotify and YouTube that are made for studying and doing homework.

Step 5 Turn off any entertainment when it’s time to focus on the hard stuff.

  • When you're struggling to focus, sign out of your email and all social media so you don't check them as a reflex.

Creating Good Study Habits

Step 1 Set up a dedicated workspace.

  • If you have many textbooks and worksheets, stack them and put them to the side.
  • Get things like pencils, erasers, calculators, rulers, and paper.

Step 2 Keep a homework planner.

  • Having a planner will make it less tempting to procrastinate, as long as you have broken up your studying into manageable chunks.
  • Your planner can be paper, or you can get one on your phone. Just make sure it has space for task lists as well as events.
  • Once you have completed a task, cross it off or put a check next to it. Seeing that you're getting your work done will make you feel better, which in turn will motivate you to keep up the good work.
  • Don't put more than you can do in one day on a list! Split up your week's work so that every day has a manageable amount.

Step 3 Stick to a weekly homework routine.

  • If you have a job or extracurricular activities that change your daily schedule, determine a weekly schedule that you stick to as much as possible.

Step 4 Get help with your homework if you’re struggling.

  • Sometimes just explaining what you have to do will help you understand it better.
  • Talking to another person is a great way to brainstorm ideas. They may ask you questions or provide comments that can help you organize your ideas.
  • Other times, the person you are talking to will notice something about the prompt that you overlooked.

13. Review and Revise:

- After completing an assignment, take the time to review and revise your work. Check for errors and improve the overall quality of your assignment.

14. Seek Extensions if Necessary:

How to Finish Assignments When You Can’t

How to finish assignment

Crunch time is coming, deadlines need to be met, essays need to be submitted, and tests should be studied for. As a student who’s waiting for the end of crunch time, you’re looking for all the right ways to cut corners while being ultra efficient with your time and energy. But sometimes racing the clock you’ll come to a realization that this mountain of a task is insurmountable and it seems almost impossible to accomplish. But at this low point is exactly where you shouldn’t settle with an incomplete assignment or missing work. There are workarounds and “life hacks” that can help pull you out of this sticky situation.

Homework and education are very important, so finishing your assignments should be something that’s on every student’s mind. Here’s some ideas to get you started on your path to getting your assignments finished:

Ask for an Extension

Lots of students find themselves in this awful situation that seems impossible to do. Even if it is your fault for being a bad student or lazy, it’s worth a try to confront your professor or teacher and ask for an extension – as long as you actually complete it. Teachers and professors understand that the point of homework isn’t to give you something to do, rather train you and give you extra practice on materials you learn in class. Just know that it’s not their responsibility to give you an extension and they are not obligated to give you points for your late or missing assignments. But do them anyway – and have your teacher check your work so they know you’re good for the work even though it’s late.

Ask for Help from Classmates

Your classmates are a good resource for you to help you finish your assignments, late or on time. They may even just give you answers – as long as you are polite about it and aren’t pressuring them to do so. They are helping you when they aren’t required to, and they’ll be more inclined if you are also reliable. The worst position to be in is to be the student who helps others but doesn’t receive help. Help could even be in the form of understanding the assignments and learning from them, kind of a tutoring situation. But again, it’s important that your classmates aren’t obligated to help you, so be grateful for any help you receive.

Prevent This Happening in the Future

We don’t want you to constantly be stuck in this seemingly impossible situation – so we urge you to think about your assignments carefully – so it doesn’t happen again. This means several things:

  • Keep Organized – understand when your assignments are due, and know how much time you have left so you can plan around it. It’s worth noting that this will also help you plan your lifestyle a bit better, so its a great thing to do
  • Give Yourself Time – saving things for last minute is a surefire way to shoot yourself in the foot. Don’t do that. Instead, if they give you an assignment to do for the next lesson or the next day – set time aside after school to do it.
  • Don’t Procrastinate – saying that you’ll do it later is the downfall of many missed assignments. You may forget about it or something may come up that will prevent you from doing your assignments on time. Get it done sooner rather than later

Use Your Resources

When we say “resources” we mean tutors, teacher’s assistants, and even the world wide web to help you complete your assignments when you’re unable to. Don’t make it a habit, but there are websites like Assignment Expert that are here to help you do exactly that: finish your homework. Note that schools and universities have their own rules for these types of resources, so use with caution. There are also websites that may have guides or flash cards that can help you in most of your subjects. If you do use them, they can be quite helpful to get you out of this situation.

Prioritize Your Assignments

If you’ve got a ton of assignments to finish – and only a limited amount of time – its good to prioritize them in an order of importance – which classes do you need to complete them today – ones with very lenient teachers or professors – and ones that are low priority because you’re allowed to miss this one assignment. Having that done, your experience with finishing your assignments will go over much smoother and less stressful.

Motivate Yourself

There’s a reason why you’re feeling stressed in this crunch time, you’re trying to accomplish something. Whether its to improve your grade or pass class, you still have motivation to do it. If you didn’t have any motivation, you wouldn’t be this stressed to read this article on the internet. But keep in mind your end goals so you’ll have the time and energy to spend on it. Complaining about not having enough time, isn’t going to give you more time.

Figure Out Your Problems

If you’ve procrastinated and put off your assignments, there must be a good reason, right? A good reason or not – you should reevaluate the things you’re doing in your life that put you in this position. If it can be helped, avoid these kinds of situations. Education is important and you should treat it as such.

Once you get a handle on your situation, you can breathe a sigh of relief. Managing your time isn’t easy, so once its done you can relax a bit before your next deadline.

Listen: we know homework isn’t fun, but it is a good way to reinforce the ideas and concepts you’ve learned in class. But what if you’re really struggling with your homework assignments?

If you’ve looked online for a little extra help with your take-home assignments, you’ve probably stumbled across websites claiming to provide the homework help and answers students need to succeed . But can homework help sites really make a difference? And if so, which are the best homework help websites you can use?

Below, we answer these questions and more about homework help websites–free and paid. We’ll go over:

  • The basics of homework help websites
  • The cost of homework help websites
  • The five best homework websites out there
  • The pros and cons of using these websites for homework help
  • The line between “learning” and “cheating” when using online homework help
  • Tips for getting the most out of a homework help website

So let’s get started!

The Basics About Homework Help Websites–Free and Paid

Homework help websites are designed to help you complete your homework assignments, plain and simple.

What Makes a Homework Help Site Worth Using

Most of the best sites allow users to ask questions and then provide an answer (or multiple possible answers) and explanation in seconds. In some instances, you can even send a photo of a particular assignment or problem instead of typing the whole thing out!

Homework help sites also offer more than just help answering homework questions. Common services provided are Q&A with experts, educational videos, lectures, practice tests and quizzes, learning modules, math solving tools, and proofreading help. Homework help sites can also provide textbook solutions (i.e. answers to problems in tons of different textbooks your school might be using), one-on-one tutoring, and peer-to-peer platforms that allow you to discuss subjects you’re learning about with your fellow students.

And best of all, nearly all of them offer their services 24/7, including tutoring!

What You Should Should Look Out For

When it comes to homework help, there are lots–and we mean lots –of scam sites out there willing to prey on desperate students. Before you sign up for any service, make sure you read reviews to ensure you’re working with a legitimate company.

A word to the wise: the more a company advertises help that veers into the territory of cheating, the more likely it is to be a scam. The best homework help websites are going to help you learn the concepts you’ll need to successfully complete your homework on your own. (We’ll go over the difference between “homework help” and “cheating” a little later!)

body-gold-piggy-bank-money

You don't need a golden piggy bank to use homework help websites. Some provide low or no cost help for students like you!

How Expensive Are the Best Homework Help Websites?

First of all, just because a homework help site costs money doesn’t mean it’s a good service. Likewise, just because a homework help website is free doesn’t mean the help isn’t high quality. To find the best websites, you have to take a close look at the quality and types of information they provide!

When it comes to paid homework help services, the prices vary pretty widely depending on the amount of services you want to subscribe to. Subscriptions can cost anywhere from $2 to $150 dollars per month, with the most expensive services offering several hours of one-on-one tutoring with a subject expert per month.

The 5 Best Homework Help Websites

So, what is the best homework help website you can use? The answer is that it depends on what you need help with.

The best homework help websites are the ones that are reliable and help you learn the material. They don’t just provide answers to homework questions–they actually help you learn the material.

That’s why we’ve broken down our favorite websites into categories based on who they’re best for . For instance, the best website for people struggling with math might not work for someone who needs a little extra help with science, and vice versa.

Keep reading to find the best homework help website for you!

Best Free Homework Help Site: Khan Academy

  • Price: Free!
  • Best for: Practicing tough material

Not only is Khan Academy free, but it’s full of information and can be personalized to suit your needs. When you set up your account , you choose which courses you need to study, and Khan Academy sets up a personal dashboard of instructional videos, practice exercises, and quizzes –with both correct and incorrect answer explanations–so you can learn at your own pace.

As an added bonus, it covers more course topics than many other homework help sites, including several AP classes.

Runner Up: Brainly.com offers a free service that allows you to type in questions and get answers and explanations from experts. The downside is that you’re limited to two answers per question and have to watch ads.

Best Paid Homework Help Site: Chegg

  • Price: $14.95 to $19.95 per month
  • Best for: 24/7 homework assistance

This service has three main parts . The first is Chegg Study, which includes textbook solutions, Q&A with subject experts, flashcards, video explanations, a math solver, and writing help. The resources are thorough, and reviewers state that Chegg answers homework questions quickly and accurately no matter when you submit them.

Chegg also offers textbook rentals for students who need access to textbooks outside of their classroom. Finally, Chegg offers Internship and Career Advice for students who are preparing to graduate and may need a little extra help with the transition out of high school.

Another great feature Chegg provides is a selection of free articles geared towards helping with general life skills, like coping with stress and saving money. Chegg’s learning modules are comprehensive, and they feature solutions to the problems in tons of different textbooks in a wide variety of subjects.

Runner Up: Bartleby offers basically the same services as Chegg for $14.99 per month. The reason it didn’t rank as the best is based on customer reviews that say user questions aren’t answered quite as quickly on this site as on Chegg. Otherwise, this is also a solid choice!

body-photomath-logo-2

Best Site for Math Homework Help: Photomath

  • Price: Free (or $59.99 per year for premium services)
  • Best for: Explaining solutions to math problems

This site allows you to t ake a picture of a math problem, and instantly pulls up a step-by-step solution, as well as a detailed explanation of the concept. Photomath also includes animated videos that break down mathematical concepts to help you better understand and remember them.

The basic service is free, but for an additional fee you can get extra study tools and learn additional strategies for solving common math problems.

Runner Up: KhanAcademy offers in-depth tutorials that cover complex math topics for free, but you won’t get the same tailored help (and answers!) that Photomath offers.

Best Site for English Homework Help: Princeton Review Academic Tutoring

  • Price: $40 to $153 per month, depending on how many hours of tutoring you want
  • Best for: Comprehensive and personalized reading and writing help

While sites like Grammarly and Sparknotes help you by either proofreading what you write via an algorithm or providing book summaries, Princeton Review’s tutors provide in-depth help with vocabulary, literature, essay writing and development, proofreading, and reading comprehension. And unlike other services, you’ll have the chance to work with a real person to get help.

The best part is that you can get on-demand English (and ESL) tutoring from experts 24/7. That means you can get help whenever you need it, even if you’re pulling an all-nighter!

This is by far the most expensive homework site on this list, so you’ll need to really think about what you need out of a homework help website before you commit. One added benefit is that the subscription covers over 80 other subjects, including AP classes, which can make it a good value if you need lots of help!

body-studtypool-logo

Best Site for STEM Homework Help: Studypool

  • Best for: Science homework help
  • Price: Varies; you’ll pay for each question you submit

When it comes to science homework help, there aren’t a ton of great resources out there. The best of the bunch is Studypool, and while it has great reviews, there are some downsides as well.

Let’s start with the good stuff. Studypool offers an interesting twist on the homework help formula. After you create a free account, you can submit your homework help questions, and tutors will submit bids to answer your questions. You’ll be able to select the tutor–and price point–that works for you, then you’ll pay to have your homework question answered. You can also pay a small fee to access notes, lectures, and other documents that top tutors have uploaded.

The downside to Studypool is that the pricing is not transparent . There’s no way to plan for how much your homework help will cost, especially if you have lots of questions! Additionally, it’s not clear how tutors are selected, so you’ll need to be cautious when you choose who you’d like to answer your homework questions.

What Are the Pros and Cons of Using Homework Help Sites?

Homework help websites can be a great resource if you’re struggling in a subject, or even if you just want to make sure that you’re really learning and understanding topics and ideas that you’re interested in. But, there are some possible drawbacks if you don’t use these sites responsibly.

We’ll go over the good–and the not-so-good–aspects of getting online homework help below.

3 Pros of Using Homework Help Websites

First, let’s take a look at the benefits.

#1: Better Grades Beyond Homework

This is a big one! Getting outside help with your studies can improve your understanding of concepts that you’re learning, which translates into better grades when you take tests or write essays.

Remember: homework is designed to help reinforce the concepts you learned in class. If you just get easy answers without learning the material behind the problems, you may not have the tools you need to be successful on your class exams…or even standardized tests you’ll need to take for college.

#2: Convenience

One of the main reasons that online homework help is appealing is because it’s flexible and convenient. You don’t have to go to a specific tutoring center while they’re open or stay after school to speak with your teacher. Instead, you can access helpful resources wherever you can access the internet, whenever you need them.

This is especially true if you tend to study at off hours because of your extracurriculars, work schedule, or family obligations. Sites that offer 24/7 tutoring can give you the extra help you need if you can’t access the free resources that are available at your school.

#3: Variety

Not everyone learns the same way. Maybe you’re more of a visual learner, but your teacher mostly does lectures. Or maybe you learn best by listening and taking notes, but you’re expected to learn something just from reading the textbook .

One of the best things about online homework help is that it comes in a variety of forms. The best homework help sites offer resources for all types of learners, including videos, practice activities, and even one-on-one discussions with real-life experts.

This variety can also be a good thing if you just don’t really resonate with the way a concept is being explained (looking at you, math textbooks!).

body_stophand

Not so fast. There are cons to homework help websites, too. Get to know them below!

3 Cons of Using Homework Help Websites

Now, let’s take a look at the drawbacks of online homework help.

#1: Unreliable Info

This can be a real problem. In addition to all the really good homework help sites, there are a whole lot of disreputable or unreliable sites out there. The fact of the matter is that some homework help sites don’t necessarily hire people who are experts in the subjects they’re talking about. In those cases, you may not be getting the accurate, up-to-date, and thorough information you need.

Additionally, even the great sites may not be able to answer all of your homework questions. This is especially true if the site uses an algorithm or chatbot to help students…or if you’re enrolled in an advanced or college-level course. In these cases, working with your teacher or school-provided tutors are probably your best option.

#2: No Clarification

This depends on the service you use, of course. But the majority of them provide free or low-cost help through pre-recorded videos. Watching videos or reading info online can definitely help you with your homework… but you can’t ask questions or get immediate feedback if you need it .

#3: Potential For Scamming

Like we mentioned earlier, there are a lot of homework help websites out there, and lots of them are scams. The review comments we read covered everything from outdated or wrong information, to misleading claims about the help provided, to not allowing people to cancel their service after signing up.

No matter which site you choose to use, make sure you research and read reviews before you sign up–especially if it’s a paid service!

body-cheat-cheating-cc0

When Does “Help” Become “Cheating”?

Admittedly, whether using homework help websites constitutes cheating is a bit of a grey area. For instance, is it “help” when a friend reads your essay for history class and corrects your grammar, or is it “cheating”? The truth is, not everyone agrees on when “help” crosses the line into “cheating .” When in doubt, it can be a good idea to check with your teacher to see what they think about a particular type of help you want to get.

That said, a general rule of thumb to keep in mind is to make sure that the assignment you turn in for credit is authentically yours . It needs to demonstrate your own thoughts and your own current abilities. Remember: the point of every homework assignment is to 1) help you learn something, and 2) show what you’ve learned.

So if a service answers questions or writes essays for you, there’s a good chance using it constitutes cheating.

Here’s an example that might help clarify the difference for you. Brainstorming essay ideas with others or looking online for inspiration is “help” as long as you write the essay yourself. Having someone read it and give you feedback about what you need to change is also help, provided you’re the one that makes the changes later.

But copying all or part of an essay you find online or having someone write (or rewrite) the whole thing for you would be “cheating.” The same is true for other subjects. Ultimately, if you’re not generating your own work or your own answers, it’s probably cheating.

5 Tips for Finding the Best Homework Help Websites for You

Now that you know some of our favorite homework help websites, free and paid, you can start doing some additional research on your own to decide which services might work best for you! Here are some top tips for choosing a homework help website.

Tip 1: Decide How You Learn Best

Before you decide which site or sites you’re going to use for homework help, y ou should figure out what kind of learning style works for you the most. Are you a visual learner? Then choose a site that uses lots of videos to help explain concepts. If you know you learn best by actually doing tasks, choose a site that provides lots of practice exercises.

Tip 2: Determine Which Subjects You Need Help With

Just because a homework help site is good overall doesn’t mean that it’s equally good for every subject. If you only need help in math, choose a site that specializes in that area. But if history is where you’re struggling, a site that specializes in math won’t be much help. So make sure to choose a site that you know provides high-quality help in the areas you need it most.

Tip 3: Decide How Much One-On-One Help You Need

This is really about cost-effectiveness. If you learn well on your own by reading and watching videos, a free site like Khan Academy is a good choice. But if you need actual tutoring, or to be able to ask questions and get personalized answers from experts, a paid site that provides that kind of service may be a better option.

Tip 4: Set a Budget

If you decide you want to go with a paid homework help website, set a budget first . The prices for sites vary wildly, and the cost to use them can add up quick.

Tip 5: Read the Reviews

Finally, it’s always a good idea to read actual reviews written by the people using these homework sites. You’ll learn the good, the bad, and the ugly of what the users’ experiences have been. This is especially true if you intend to subscribe to a paid service. You’ll want to make sure that users think it’s worth the price overall!

I’m Done Now What?

  • August 9, 2020

Are you tired of hearing “I’m done, now what?” when your students complete a task?  Establishing this one routine for fast finishers in the classroom will not only make your life sooooo much easier, but it will also maximize learning time. Keep reading because I’m about to share my favorite teacher tip with you, and it’s called “I’m Done” folders!

I'm-Done-Now-What?

In this post, I’m going to explain what my system for fast finishers is, how to set it up, how to introduce it to students, keep it differentiated, and more!

im done folders

What Are “I’m Done, Now What?” Folders?

I’m Done Folders are simply that, folders that contain work for students to complete when they finish an assignment. Simple right? And with these few tips, I can help you create a system that goes smoothly from the start of the year all the way until the end.

i'm done with all my assignments

How To Set Up “I’m Done, Now What” Folders

Provide each child with a folder and a place to keep them. My students worked at tables, so they each had a seat sack on their chairs. Their I’m Done, Now What Folders were kept in those seat sacks . This ensured that once they completed a task they had easy access to their I’m Done work. It also helps to eliminate a lot of unnecessary moving around the room, since children do spend a lot of time at their tables.

fast-finishers-in-the-classroom

I used a large incentive chart to keep track of how many packets each student completed. I write their names down the left-hand side and place stickers in each space once they complete a packet. Later on, I’ll share how to provide incentives to students to encourage them to actually work on completing their given packets.

Creating Work for Fast Finishers

Okay, so you have your folders, you’ve designated a spot for the kids to keep them, and you know how you track their work. Now let’s move on to actually creating the packets that will go inside of these I’m Done Now What? folders.

Here are my criteria:

  • No-Prep Worksheets:  Remember, this system is to make your life easier, not harder. Look for no-prep resources that you can just print, staple, and put inside of a folder

im-done-now-what

  • No Cutting:  You don’t want worksheets that require any cutting. Look for sheets that can be completed with just a pencil and/or crayons. The reason is, children will have limited time in spurts to work on these printables. With cutting activities, it is easy for children to lose pieces and waste time looking for them later on

im-done-now-what

If you follow these suggestions, you will be able to create packets that not only allow children to work independently, but also practice key phonics and math skills

how-to-differentiate

Differentiating Your I’m Done Folders

As with everything else, differentiation is important with your I’m Done Now What Folders.

Why You Should Differentiate Your No-Prep Packets

  • The Pace At Which Children Work: Consider who is going to have more time to work on these packets, verse who will barely have an opportunity. Use this knowledge to determine the number of printables you include in someone’s packet. Children who are constantly completing their assignments should have larger packets. Our children who struggle to complete given assignments should have a much smaller packet. These children will not have as many opportunities to work on this, and we don’t want them to feel as if they are falling behind.
  • The Skills They Need to Work On:  Each student’s packet should be focused on a skill they need a little more support on, yet can still complete independently. Use your progress monitoring data to determine which skills you want each child to work on.

I use these Data Tracking Assessments and Digital Tracker to help me determine which phonics and math skills I want each child to work on.

i'm done with all my assignments

When it comes to setting expectations for your I’m Done, Now What Folders, you want to model and remind at the start of the year. Before students begin any task, remind them that when they finish, they should take out their folders. Model the way you expect them to work on these tasks. If you continue to remind students of perfect opportunities to pull out these packets, it will eventually become a habit.

i'm done with all my assignments

Lastly, you want to provide incentives to your students to actually encourage them to do additional work. I implemented a reward system for the completion of three I’m Done Now What packets. And since my packets were all differentiated to meet the needs of each individual, all students had a fair chance at the prizes.

I used a large incentive chart to track the completion of each packet. Each student’s name is written down the left side, and the number of packets along the top.

im-done-now-what

With each completed packet, they get a sticker next to their name. Once they complete three packets, they get to pick a prize from the prize box .

Here’s a quick video where I explain all about I’m Done Folders:

If you implement this classroom management plan in your room, I am confident that you will not regret it!

My assignment is due tomorrow and I haven't even started it yet!

i'm done with all my assignments

English expert at Atomi

i'm done with all my assignments

Well, if it really is due tomorrow, let’s do this and do it quick! You could have anything due tomorrow, so instead of a step-by-step guide let’s focus on some tips and tricks to pull off this craziness. Legions of students before you have done it and legions of students after you will do it so have faith—you can do it 💪.

1. Prioritise

This probably doesn’t need to be said but if it’s due tomorrow then clear your schedule tonight—this is absolutely your top priority right now! Normally we recommend getting plenty of sleep but if you have something due tomorrow, tonight's the night to push your bedtime back a little bit (still no all-nighters though!)

2. Get your head in the game

Okay, no matter how much of a mountain it seems, this has to be done tonight. Don’t let yourself even consider the option of handing it in late—just thinking that will make it even harder to finish in time.

It’s time to get your head in the game and focus on the task ahead. You want to grab some water and make sure you’ve eaten. Then, set yourself up in a clean, bright area, find a supportive chair and grab all of the resources you'll need to do your assignment.

You can check out our video on Study Spaces for everything you need to set up the perfect workspace.

3. Work out exactly what you need to do

To work as efficiently as possible you should first understand exactly what you need to do.

That means you need to think about exactly what ideas or topics you need to cover and what your approach should be. So, read the assignment and marking criteria carefully and identify any keywords. Also highlight any important details, like the word count or page limit, the submission format and any other info that will affect how you approach this task.

This will vary massively depending on the assignment. The point is basically just that you should make sure you know exactly what you need to do before you start. Trust me, it’ll make everything quicker if you do ⏰.

4. Do a brief plan

To make sure we can get this done properly in one night, the next step is to plan your answer. This will make it a lot easier to start writing and, if you have to do any research, you will know exactly what you’re looking for.

So, sketch out a brief plan onto a page. Work out what needs to go into your answer and how it’s going to be structured. It might feel difficult or pointless to plan at this point, but if you can get some of the hard work out of the way here it’ll become much easier to write!

5. Research efficiently

Now, this one is obviously only relevant if you need research for your answer. Gathering research for an essay or report can take time. By using the keywords from the syllabus and assessment notification, you’ll be able to focus on the resources that you actually need. As far as you can, drop your research straight into the plan and you’ll be moving much more efficiently.

Don’t forget to reference as you go! This will save you time and ensure you don’t make any mistakes 😅.

6. Quality over quantity

This is a seriously important tip. When you’re really under pressure, it can be tempting to just smash out as many words as possible so you can hit that word count—don’t do this! It’s just going to give you a whole lot of waffle and even worse marks.

Instead of waffling, stick to your answer plan, use your research and fall back on the ideas in our lessons . It will get you a much better result for not that much extra work ✅.

7. Do your final read over tomorrow morning

Once you’ve finally pulled off that answer, it’s time to go to bed. You’re probably going to be too tired, too stressed and too wrapped up in your answer to be able to give it a proper check and edit.

So, just get some sleep now, set the alarm 30mins earlier tomorrow and read over it again with fresh eyes and a clear mind. You should be able to pick up any little mistakes and make the whole thing read a lot better and generally end up with a stronger answer!

Even though this isn’t ideal, you can still pull it off! The secret is to be as efficient as possible. So, keep calm, find out exactly what you need to do, plan, research properly and don’t waffle.

Oh and next time, don’t leave your assignments to the last minute 😅. Instead, watch our lesson on Planning an Assignment and use the downloadable planner so you aren’t in this sticky situation again.

How to Finish All Your Missing Assignments Fast; 8 Useful Tips

When you do not submit or complete assignments on time you are faced with the challenge of missing assignments. It can be hard to keep track of all your missing assignments when they pile up but don’t worry.

First, talk with your teachers about the assignments you failed to submit and ask for a deadline extension. Then, make a plan for how to handle your work, putting the most important tasks first. Take breaks, treat yourself, and keep a good attitude to get more done. It’s not easy to make up for the schoolwork you missed, but if you’re organized and have a plan, you’ll be better able to handle whatever comes your way.

It is a daunting situation, and without the right approach, you may end up not finishing your missing assignments which will affect your overall grade. Here are critical steps that can help you finish all your missing assignments fast.

1.   Create a list of all missing assignments

List of missing assignments

When working on missing assignments, you are more likely to pick the easier assignment first and forget about the tough assignments. Making a list of all your assignments helps to make sure you complete all missing assignments.

List all the missing assignments that need to be done; even if you have to re-read notes, all these tasks must be included in the list. Tick off the tasks after completion to keep you motivated.

2.   Create a detailed timetable

timetable for your missing assignments

A timetable helps you plan your tasks. Assign all your missing assignments time. Schedule more time for the tough assignments. Remember you are on a deadline, so whatever time you estimate an activity might take, reduce it by at least 5 to 10 minutes. You have to be ruthless and, at the same time, realistic when coming up with a timetable.

3.   Gather all assignment materials

After listing all the missing assignments, you will have an idea of all the required materials. You must gather all the necessary tools, such as laptops and writing materials. By doing this, you ensure that you will not have to take breaks now and then to fetch something leading to time wastage. If you are the type of person who concentrates better on music in the background, this can be a great time to choose a studying playlist.

4.   Switch off your devices

You must turn off all the gadgets not needed to do the assignments. These may include phones and tablets. You need to find a place with minimal distraction to enable you fully concentrate on the task at hand.

Being destructed will cost you time which could have been used to finish your missing assignments. Therefore, you can choose to keep your devices in a different room and only use them when you are on break. You can use one of the breaks already programmed to check on your social media.

5.   Ask for Assignment help online

If you’re thinking “I need help with my missing assignments” and want to finish homework fast, don’t avoid getting help. There are fast writers online who will help you with your assignments – for a small price of course.

Remember that your mental health has a big effect on how much you get done. No matter how hard you try, you won’t be able to finish your assignment faster if you are tired or stressed out. Assignment help experts will relieve you of your missing assignments stress.

6.   Reward yourself after finishing a missing assignment

Doing assignments may be challenging. Our brains work better when there is a possibility of getting a reward. Rewarding yourself after finishing each assignment will motivate you to continue and improve your speed.

These rewards can be a few minutes of rest, eating a snack, playing games, or spending some time on social media. These rewards should be manageable, they should not be activities that will take much of your time.

7.   Avoid unnecessary breaks

Breaks are very important when doing any task, but you need to be disciplined and take breaks only when necessary to avoid wasting time. The best way to do this is by working in short sprints and taking at most a 5-minute break.

Remember, it is also not advisable to work continuously without a break. Your mind will be exhausted, and you will take longer to complete simple tasks.

To ensure you are disciplined, you need to have punishments in place if you don’t achieve your target. You can punish yourself by taking away break privileges when a task is not done as allocated.

8.   Stay positive and remember what is at stake

Apart from following these steps, the most important step to finishing all your missing assignments is having a positive mindset. You must remember what is at stake, which in this case, is your academic achievement. Having this in mind will act as a form of motivational tool whenever things seem impossible.

Is it bad to have missing assignments in college?

Yes, it is bad to have incomplete assignments. You can skip some assignments without getting into trouble with the faculty, but you will lose some credits. Some lecturers are lenient and will award you partial credit for late submission of assignments, while others will give you nothing. When you miss assignments and are in an upper-division class, be sure your grades will be negatively impacted. You may not get into trouble with the faculty for missing one or two assignments, but your grades might be affected in the long run.

Do missing assignments affect your GPA?

Yes, missing assignments do affect your GPA. Missing assignments are usually given low or 0 marks which negatively impacts the grade, which is not a good thing for the student. You must maintain a GPA of 2.8 and above to have a good academic transcript. To remain competitive with the higher percentile range of students, you must have a 3.2 and above GPA score.

Can a professor drop you from a class for missing assignments?

Generally, a professor cannot drop you from a class because of missing assignments. However, this will also depend on your institution and its policy regarding missing assignments. Some lecturers are usually lenient and will pardon you for missing a few assignments, while others are stricter.

If you have any concerns about missing assignments, it is important to talk to your lecturer and understand their expectations and policies regarding missing assignments. If you are interested in getting the best results, you can contact your professor with genuine reasons why you missed the assignments and they might agree to give you partial credit that will assist in boosting your final grade.

Can I complete all my missing assignments in a day?

Yes, you can complete all missing assignments in a day. However, it will depend on the type and quantity of assignments you have. In most cases, it will be better to ask for more time instead of producing sub-standard work because of time.

Completing all missing assignments in a day will also require you to devise a good plan and implement it. You will have to stay away from any disruptions that may hinder your progress. Prior planning and communication with your lecturer will help you avoid situations whereby you have to complete a number of missing assignments within a day. You can ask for assignment help online if overwhelmed by deadlines.

Do missing assignments show up on transcripts?

No, missing assignments do not appear in your transcript; they only reduce your grades. Unlike cheating, missing assignments only affect total grades; therefore, it is better to have unsubmitted assignments than receive an “F” because of cheating. The only issue you will have on your transcript due to missing assignments is your GPA.

Can you graduate with missing assignments?

No, you cannot pass a class with missing assignments; therefore, you cannot graduate with incomplete assignments. To complete a course, some different assignments and tasks need to be completed, and failure to complete assignments will greatly affect your overall score.

Therefore, it is critical for a student to ensure that all assignments are completed and preferably on time. However, depending on the institution, you can graduate if the missing assignment didn’t greatly affect your final score.

Can a professor fail you for missing one assignment?

Not really, missing assignments will only impact your grade, and the lecturer has nothing to do with it. Most lecturers deal with several students and do not have time to deal with a particular student’s missing assignment. It is the responsibility of a student to make sure that all the assignments are completed. However, there are lecturers teaching units with few students; such lecturers have the time to follow up on individual students’ missing assignments. You need to know that even the lecturers that follow up on missing assignments will still deduct credit for a late submission.

It is completely the student’s responsibility to ensure no missing assignments. Professors do not fail students because of missing assignments because missing an assignment does not necessarily mean the student is performing badly; it might be because the student had a legitimate reason for not doing that assignment.

One family lost 2 sons during WWII. It took 80 years to bring the last soldier home.

By Kerry Breen

Updated on: May 27, 2024 / 9:04 AM EDT / CBS News

Elsie Thompson, the youngest of seven children, lost two brothers during World War II. Her sibling Phillip Engesser was returned home to be laid to rest, but her oldest brother, Marcus Engesser , is only just being brought back to his California hometown more than 80 years after his death thanks to an identification by the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency.

Engesser served in Company L of the 31st Infantry Regiment during World War II, operating in the Philippines. He was captured following the American surrender of the Bataan Peninsula in April 1942, the DPAA said , and forced on the Bataan death march before being interned in a notorious prison camp. He died of malaria in September 1942 and his remains were buried in a mass grave at the camp. Over 2,800 American soldiers died at the camp before its liberation in 1945, the agency said.

engesser2.jpg

In 1947, that grave was exhumed and the U.S. Army attempted to identify the soldiers buried there. At the time, most of the remains were considered unidentifiable, and they were buried at the Manila American Cemetery and Memorial as Unknowns. Engesser's name was engraved on the Walls of the Missing at the cemetery.

Thompson, 92, remembered Engesser as a "good" and "handsome" older brother. It was difficult for her family, she said, to never have his remains. Thompson's daughter, Joanne Smith, even remembered her grandmother writing a letter to the Army searching for Engesser's body so he could be buried alongside family.

"My mother went through a lot because she lost several sons during the war," Thompson told CBS News. "I think it was pretty hard on my mom. (Marcus) is the only one, we didn't have any material of him."

In 2018, the unknown remains buried at the Manila American Cemetery and Memorial were disinterred again to be studied by the DPAA. Mitochondrial DNA analysis, dental and anthropological analysis, and other evidence allowed scientists at the DPAA's laboratory to positively identify some of the remains as belonging to Engesser in 2023. Thompson told CBS News that she was informed of the identification in 2024, and said that the closure is "wonderful."

"It was emotional to hear what was going on with Marky," said Thompson, adding that she plans to place Engesser's remains with her mother, brothers and other family members. "It's been quite an experience."

What is the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency?

Thompson is just one of the thousands of people who have their family members' remains returned to them through the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency. The agency accounted for 158 missing soldiers last year. The identifications bring closure to families, and offer a chance for fallen soldiers to be buried at home.

The call to identify and recover fallen soldiers was brought to the forefront of the nation's conscience during the Vietnam War, according to Ashley Wright, a public affairs specialist with the DPAA. The United States has "always tried to account for our missing," Wright said, starting with the American Graves Registration Command after World War II. That command would try to make identifications based on the best available science at the time, Wright said.

As science has evolved, though, so have recoveries and identifications. There are about 72,000 soldiers from World War II, about 7,500 from the Korean War, and more than 1,550 from the Vietnam War that are still unaccounted. But from the first Gulf Wars, there are just six soldiers unaccounted for, Wright said, and there are no unaccounted for soldiers from the war in Afghanistan. Technology has had a large role in recent conflicts ensuring soldiers are identified and returned home.

"It's just a sharp decline with each conflict," Wright said. "The cases that we're working on now are not the easy slam dunks, or they would have been solved prior. These are hard cases. These are tough cases. ... We're just continuing to do what we can to bring these families answers."

How does the DPAA identify fallen soldiers?

Wright said that "history, diplomacy and science intersect" to help the DPAA laboratory make identifications.

The process starts with history: Researchers and experts in the agency start by combing through archival records to learn as much as they can about where a fallen soldier was last seen. Investigative teams will travel to the area to talk to any surviving witnesses and examine the area to look for clues to confirm if someone went missing there.

The agency operates in 46 countries, with just one outlier: North Korea . The diplomacy is even small-scale enough to connect with individual locals, Wright said, since sometimes a fallen soldier may have vanished on what is now private land.

Once the DPAA researchers have determined they're in the right spot, a recovery mission is sent to the area. These teams of 15 to 25 people, Wright said, included explosive ordnance disposal experts who can handle live ammunition that may be on the scene. Medical personnel, senior recovery experts and forensic photographers are also part of these groups, and up to 100 locals may be involved with the physical work of digging and searching for remains. Recovery missions spend 30 to 60 days on the ground, Wright said, before returning to the DPAA laboratory.

Back at the lab, multiple scientific techniques are used to try and identify fallen soldiers. Forensic odontologists, or dentists who can look at medical records and compare them to teeth found in the field, can match dental evidence to the profiles of missing soldiers. Other unique bones, like clavicles, are compared. For soldiers who disappeared during the Korean War, experts compare tuberculosis skin test results taken before someone shipped out to the remains found.

The remains are then laid out and X-rayed to be matched further, other forms of analysis include mitochondrial DNA analysis and isotope analysis, which can determine what a person was eating decades ago. This can help identify the remains of American soldiers - who typically ate a corn-based diet - from the remains of locals who may have eaten differently. The DPAA has also collected comparison DNA from family members, like Thompson.

Once a fallen soldier has been likely identified, family members are asked for a reference sample of DNA. Finally, a medical examiner will sign off on a report making the identification, and service casualty officers then reach out to family members for a full briefing.

The process is painstaking and long. Families can spend decades wondering what happened to their loved one, Wright said, like Thompson did.

"Every case is different and faces its own challenges, and every case is special," Wright said. "Every single one of these cases has a family member. Every single one of those has a comrade-in-arms who still wonders what happened to them. That number is definitely not lost on us in any way, shape or form."

Members of the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency carry a transfer case during a repatriation ceremony for service members missing in action from the battle of Tarawa, Republic of Kiribati, July 25, 2017.

Bringing closure to families

Wright said that the DPAA's goal is to bring closure to family members and loved ones like Thompson and Smith. Once family members are told about the identification of their loved one, the military works with the families to conduct a burial with full military honors.

"Even if we just find and make an identification of a single tooth, they will get full military honors because they made that ultimate sacrifice," Wright said.

Smith said that having this closure has been "amazing" for her family and said she is honored that her uncle will receive a full military funeral. She said that she and Thompson would be able to meet the plane bringing Engesser's remains to California on the tarmac. They also received Engesser's medals.

"My grandmother went through so much ... After all these years, to have it full circle, to have (Engesser) come home and be buried with his mom, it just means a lot," Smith said. "I'm so thankful that my mom was alive to see this happen. I know it means a lot to her to have her brother back on American soil."
