Homework tips for supporting children in primary school

A girl practises her handwriting homework in a book. Her mum beside her helps and points to the letter 'A'.

Homework can be a sticking point for busy families.

After experts questioned its relevance for primary schoolers, many of you weighed in on Facebook, disagreeing on how much, if any, homework is the right amount for this age group.

So, what is beneficial? And what are some strategies to help make it a less stressful part of the day for both parents and kids?

What's the value in homework?

Grattan Institute deputy program director Amy Haywood says there is value in homework — particularly set reading — for primary school-aged kids.

Ms Haywood, based in Naarm/Melbourne, says time spent reading independently or with an adult "is a really good use of time because it builds up the vocabulary".

In addition to reading, other key skills such as maths can be a focus.

Portrait of Amy Haywood wearing brown glasses and black long sleeve top, with shoulder length blonde hair.

"In classes is where they're doing a lot of the learning of new content or skills, and then outside the school might be opportunity to practise."

She says there's "clear evidence around practice leading to mastery, and then the mastery having an impact on students' engagement in school, [and] their confidence with taking on different learning tasks".

There's also a case for homework in later primary years as you might want them to build some of those study habits before they go into secondary school.

But, she says "schools need to be careful about what homework they are setting".

Communicate with the school

Ms Haywood encourages parents to speak to teachers if they have concerns about set homework.

"[Teachers] may not necessarily realise that a student is spending a lot of time or needing quite a bit of help.

"That new information is very useful for a teacher because it means that they can go back and understand what they might need to reteach and any misconceptions that they need to go over."

Find the best time for your family

Parenting expert and family counsellor Rachel Schofield says finding the best time for homework in your family's routine is important.

Based in New South Wales' Bega Valley, on traditional lands of the Yuin-Monaro Nations, she says for some families fitting it into the morning routine is easier.

Portrait of Rachel Schofield with long blonde hair and a wide smile, wearing a royal blue shirt and reading glasses.

It's also about when parents and caregivers are in "the best shape" to help, "because if you've got a kid that's battling homework, you're going to have to be in emotionally good shape".

"If you're really stressed at the end of the day, then that's probably not the best time."

Ms Schofield says "parents have incredibly busy lives" but if you can carve out the time "homework can become a place where you actually get to slow down and stop".

She says children below the age of 10 need a lot a supervision and shouldn't be expected to do homework independently.

Why homework straight after school might not work

Ms Schofield says kids "need decompression time after school".

She says there's an understandable tendency among busy parents to get homework out of the way as soon as possible, but this could be working against them.

Snacks, play and time to offload are usually what primary-aged kids need, Ms Schofield says.

Some time to play and connect with a parent after school can be "really helpful".

Even 10 minutes "can make the whole trajectory of the evening go differently", she says.

Ms Schofield says kids can come home with "a lot of emotional stuff" and rough-and-tumble-play can be a good way to spend time with them and help them decompress after school.

Ms Schofield says you can also try and engage with your child 'playfully' if they are refusing to do homework.

It's tempting to be stern and serious in response, but she says treating it more "goofily" by poorly attempting to complete it yourself or asking your child for help with a task might get a better result.

Our Homework Approach

Each child will be given a subject related workbook. They are also expected to share books and to read at least 5 times a week. For our youngest children the same two books will be read again and again to enable each child to practice and master the essential reading skills. As we all know practice makes perfect.

It is key that by the time each child reaches the end of Year 2, they have mastered the essential skills of reading – all of the basics. Below is the homework timetable. Each child must bring their workbook back into school on the set day. The teacher will go through the answers and address any mis-understanding.

Each homework is worth 1 reward for each child and each reward earns points for their House (Blue, Green, Red J and Yellow). Only the child will handle their own work book.

Each workbook is to interrupt the child forgetting knowledge and skills they have already learnt.

Reading books – Each child is expected to read at least 5 times a week for a minimum of 20 minutes. For children in Reception, Years 1 & 2, home reading books must come back into school every Friday and new books will be sent home each Friday. For children in Years 3-6, each teacher will tell their class when books need to be in school.

Hill West Primary School selected for the second round of Prime Minister’s transformative school rebuilding programme

19 July 2021

hill west primary school homework

Pupils at Hill West Primary School, part of the Arthur Terry Learning Partnership, are set to benefit from new, modern, energy efficient school buildings as a further 50 schools are confirmed for the Prime Minister’s ten-year rebuilding programme, to level up opportunities for all.

Transforming education for thousands of pupils, the 50 projects announced today build on the existing programme bringing the total number of schools being upgraded to 100. The School Rebuilding Programme is due to deliver 500 rebuilding projects over the next decade, which will benefit tens of thousands of pupils over their lifetime.

The schools included in this round include primary, secondary and special and alternative provision schools, with more than 60 per cent of the schools in the North and Midlands.

The rebuilds and refurbishments will create modern education environments, providing new facilities from classrooms and science labs, to sports halls and dining rooms. The new school buildings will also be net-zero carbon in operation, helping meet the Government’s net zero target.

The Government is also today confirming another core funding boost for schools through the National Funding Formula. Every pupil is set to benefit from the largest funding increase in a decade as part of £14.4bn funding increase, first announced in 2019.

Education Secretary, Gavin Williamson said:

“The environment children are taught in makes such an enormous difference to their education.

“This programme will give thousands more young people the chance to learn in world class school facilities, levelling up opportunity and making sure every young person has the chance to succeed, progress and fulfil their potential.

“As we build back better after the pandemic, with buildings that are net-zero in operation, this major ten-year rebuilding programme will help to shape the education of not only children now, but for years to come.”

Dr Beth Clarke, Headteacher of Hill West Primary School, part of the Arthur Terry Learning Partnership (ATLP), said:

hill west primary school homework

“We are thrilled to have been chosen for this ambitious project, which will include state-0f-the-art facilities and modernisation to future proof Hill West and Improve the learning environment for all our pupils. “This rebuild will transform our school – not only bringing with it amazing opportunities for our pupils now, but also for all the pupils who are to pass through Hill West in the future. We are extremely proud of the Hill West community and all that we have achieved together. This programme will enable us to build on our successes to date and to share those benefits with our children and families, both at our school and across the wider Arthur Terry Learning Partnership.”

Andrew Mitchell, MP for Sutton Coldfield, said:

“I am delighted for Hill West Primary School, the ATLP and our community by this announcement. This significant investment will bring a welcome boost to our schools, resulting in lasting improvements and opportunities for all.

“As an avid supporter of schools in my constituency of the royal town of Sutton Coldfield, and having been at Hill West just last week, I am pleased to be part of this exciting development.”

Today, the Department for Education is also launching a consultation to gather views on how to prioritise schools for the remainder of the programme.

Funding for individual projects in the School Rebuilding programme will be determined when the scope and delivery plans at each school are developed. Projects will range from replacing or refurbishing individual buildings through to whole school rebuilds.

The most advanced projects from the first round of the programme will begin construction in autumn 2021. The programme will help to create jobs, apprenticeships and training opportunities across England, with suppliers offering training and apprenticeships as part of their work on the projects.

The majority of the confirmed projects are expected to complete within three to five years.

The Government is also today confirming increased school core funding rates. From 2022-23, secondary schools across England will attract an average of £6,150 per pupil, an average increase of £160. Primary schools will attract an average of £4,800 per pupil, an average increase of £120

Funding for small and remote schools is also being boosted by £53m in 2022-23, recognising these schools are often at the heart of the rural communities they serve.

High needs funding, to support children with special educational needs and disabilities, is increasing by £780m in 2022-23. This comes on top of the over £1.5 billion increase over the previous two years.

At West Hill we recognise the value of home – school learning. For our pupils to reach their full potential, it is essential that the valuable learning taking place in school is continued and strengthened at home.

The homework set is graduated throughout the school to be appropriately challenging. Below you will find how homework is set of each key stage and year group.

Early years:

  • Children are given a list of spellings to learn on a Friday. They are tested the following Friday and given a feedback sheet to take home showing which spellings they need to continue practicing.
  • Children are given a maths activity on a Friday to be returned the following Monday
  • Children are expected to read at home at least 3 times a week and are given a reading record to be completed by an adult
