1st year urdu paper presentation method and tips

 The students who are going to appear 1st time Intermediate exams really need to know 1st year paper pattern of all subjects first. When I published Urdu paper presentation for 2nd year, many students asked for the same type of post for 1st year Urdu. So, here is your 1st year Urdu paper pattern and paper presentation.

1st year Urdu paper Presentation

Paper presentation is what does miracles. You may have given good answers but in a bad way. So, you cannot expect much out of your answer sheet. I know many students who are good at studying but poor at paper presentations. This thing leads them to poor marks in Urdu.

If you have excellent preparation and excellent paper presentation, you can expect upto 90% marks in Urdu. Paper layout, sequence, use of a marker, section divisions, etc cast a healthy impression on the paper checker. 

As a result, you get high marks out of favor. Here is comes when many shining students don't get good marks in Urdu.

How to attempt 1st year Urdu paper for Good marks

The first thing I would recommend is the use of markers in a better way. The second thing is the overall layout of the paper. I have explained the procedure step by step. 

You can follow this procedure for an amazing and good paper presentation of 11th class Urdu.

Here are some guidelines for 1st year Urdu paper presentation:

1. Use a good marker in a good way

Using a black or blue marker is a good practice while attempting 1st year Urdu paper. It not only gives a good layout to your paper but also facilitates the paper checker to navigate to various sections and questions on your answer sheet. 

So, the use of markers is the first thing that adds value to your paper presentation. Use a cut-tip marker for the following items on your answer sheet:

  • Division lines
  • Headings and subheadings in your answers
  • Verses (ashaar) and Quotations in your answers
  • Draw margin lines if necessary

2. Star a new question on a new page

3. use quotations and poetry in answers.

You should start from the shortest answer to the largest. 1st of all attempt those question that requires short answers but carries more marks. For example, you can start with the summary of the poem which only needs 7-10 lines (almost half page).

Time management in 11th class Urdu papers is the most problematic phenomenon for students. You have to write almost 22 - 25 pages in 2 hours and 30 minutes. Many students do not attempt the whole paper in time and they miss a question or two. 

This is why many brilliant students get low marks in Urdu papers. Time management is really important in 1st year Urdu papers.

You need to keep both speed and quality of writing in mind. If you can write a page in 6 minutes, you can attempt your paper in time. You may like to see the following ideal time management.

Ideal time management

1. Look at your questions paper/ draw margins etc = 3 minutes

2. Khulasa of Nazam = 5 minutes

3. Talkhees = 10 minutes

4. Application = 12 minutes

5. Dialogue/Rudad/Raseed = 18 minutes

6. Nasar ki Tashreh = 20 minutes

7. Sabaq Ka Khulasa = 20 minutes

7. Nazam k Ashaar ki Tashreh = 30 minutes

8. Ghazal k Ashar ki Tashreh = 30 minutes

9. Look at your answer sheet = 2 minutes

You can attempt your paper in time if you follow this time scale. You can also make your own time schedule like this.

Tips for students:

The students who are often attempting their paper in a poor way can see the following tips for 1st year Urdu paper presentation.

1. Do not write more than what is recommended length of an answer in order to save time.

2. Urdu is as important as other subjects. You should give proper time to Urdu. Many students neglect this subject thinking it is very easy, as a result, they get the least marks in this subject.

3. Use a marker (blue or black or both) in your paper to give a good presentation.

4. Learn the names of the poets, authors, and some popular proverbs, ayaat, ahadees and quotations to insert into your paper.

5. Learn to write fast but neat and cleanly. Although writing doesn't matter, but cleaner writing will get you more marks out of favour.

Darvazah – A Door Into Urdu is an interactive, multimedia Elementary Urdu learning website. We invite you to explore the site and try out the various lessons and learning resources. If you are ready, go to the next tab: “How To Begin.”

About the Project

The Darvazah site is available to anyone in the world at no charge. Whether you are an independent learner or enrolled in a formal Urdu language course, you will find many resources here to enhance your language learning. Darvazah is designed as a stand-alone, comprehensive language course, but it also complements other Urdu-learning textbooks and curricula.

The site consists of 24 multimedia lessons designed to provide the equivalent of two full semesters of university-level language instruction. By working your way through the materials presented here, you will learn basic spoken and written Urdu.

Each lesson is an integrated module that includes short films, grammar notes, glossaries, cultural notes, “video-professors,” interactive activities, and other learning resources. The lesson movies were filmed in India, Pakistan, and the United States using native speakers and students. Every fourth lesson (i.e. Lessons 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, and 24) is a review lessons which does not include new grammar topics but rather supplementary glossaries and activities. Upgrades to the site are currently in progress, and additional learning resources and exercises are being added periodically.

Because Urdu and Hindi are essentially the same language in their colloquial spoken forms, we have created a parallel Hindi learning site called “A Door Into Hindi.” [https://tajhindi.unc.edu] In both sites, we have deliberately combined traditional Hindi and Urdu contexts, much as they overlap in India and Pakistan. Although some words may appear odd when used in the “wrong” context (e.g. “Namaste” in Pakistan), we believe that an attempt to segregate Hindi and Urdu would be misleading and counter to the lived linguistic experience of people in South Asia.

Whether you are a student or teacher of Urdu, your input is welcome in the form of suggestions, questions, or comments. We envision this project as collaborative and adaptive, so if you would like to share your own Urdu teaching materials, we would be happy to add links to this site. Every student has a different learning strategy. If you have never studied a foreign language before, you will have to discover what learning strategy works best for you.

“Darvazah” contains twenty-four lesson units as well as an Urdu alphabet learning module. Most Lesson units are integrated modules that consist of:

  • A Lesson Movie with subtitles
  • A transcript of the Lesson film dialogue
  • A Lesson glossary
  • A set of Lesson grammar topics
  • Culture Notes
  • Interactive language-learning activities

Every fourth lesson (i.e. Lessons 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, and 24) is a review lesson that does not include new grammar information but rather supplementary glossaries and activities.

Lesson Media

Each Lesson contains links to media resources mounted on YouTube. You will need a reliable broadband internet connection in order to access the media. The Lesson movies include optional subtitles in Hindi and Urdu. You may use the tools provided by YouTube to pause, rewind, and slow down the films. Each Lesson unit also contains a transcript of the film dialogue with links to the Glossaries, Grammar units, and Culture Notes.

The Lesson Activities active the expressions and vocabulary words contained in the lesson. These may be attempted orally or in writing. Some activities are designed for use with conversation partners or small groups. We encourage you to undertake the written activities by hand rather than trying to learn how to type in Urdu.

The Urdu Writing System

While it is possible to learn Urdu without learning the Urdu writing system (Devanagari), this site assumes that you will learn how to read and write in tandem with learning how to speak and understand. We have created a simple Alphabet Module to guide you through the writing system. You should try to write the Lesson 1 written homework assignments in the Urdu script. In Lessons 1, 2, and 3, each glossary word is linked to an animated spelling movie. Click on the word to see and hear how the word is spelled. By Lesson 3 you should be somewhat comfortable reading and writing in Urdu.

Learning a new alphabet requires using visual memory for shapes, which is another skill that many of do not use regularly. We highly recommend that you make flash cards for yourself: each card should have one Urdu letter on one side, and on the other side, something that will help you remember the sound of the letter. Beware of online flashcard apps that generate the “sound” of the letters: most of these are not correct.

The Urdu fonts used in this website are Unicode based, which means that they should display correctly in all platform and browser environments. Most devices should be able to display the Urdu alphabet without any special apps or settings. Please see the table below to check whether the operating system and browser combination on your computer is displaying the Urdu font properly. The word in the left column [text in Unicode font] should match the word in the right column [image].

Many students prefer to begin by watching the Lesson 1 movie. We have intentionally not provided English translation in subtitles. You can use the YouTube “Playback Speed” feature to slow down the dialogue, and you may wish to turn on the Hindi subtitles to see what you are hearing. After watching the Lesson Movie, you may refer to the Movie Script, the Glossary, the Cultural Notes, and the Grammar section before watching the movie again. After you feel that you understand most of what is going on in the Movie, you may begin trying the activities. If this approach works well for you, you should use it for each new lesson. It is also possible to approach the modules in a different order, depending on your learning style.

Learning a new language requires using aural memory, a skill which many of have not used since we learned our first language. Try to memorize words and phrases by sound, before writing them down. You can hear the words in the Lesson Glossaries by click on the Ear Icon next to each word. Once you have the words and dialogue “in your ear” you should then look at the Alphabet Module. Go back and forth between the Lessons and the Alphabet Module so that each reinforces the other.

Title Page of a Standard Assignment

This is the format that is usually followed in a standard assignment in case your instructor has not provided you the details to follow while making a cover page.

The title page of an assignment contains very general information about the student, name of the instructor, student’s number, name of the course that the assignment is of, date of submission, due date, and the name of the assignment.

There could be additional details to add on the cover page of your assignment, so do check with your instructor before commencing.

Important Information for International Students

Do you need to take the SPEC (Spoken Proficiency of English for the Classroom)?

All students for whom English is not a first language (as self-reported on their admissions application) and who have first-time appointments as graduate teaching assistants (TAs) are required to go through a testing process to assess their effectiveness in speaking English before they are assigned assistantship responsibilities. Beginning in Fall 2024, there will be a new test to assess communication in English in a classroom context called SPEC (Spoken Proficiency of English in the Classroom).  This is replacing ESPA and ELPT.  Details will be coming soon.

Any graduate student who is included in the following categories needs to have their oral English proficiency tested by the TAPE Program:

  • Students whose first language is not English (i.e., learned another language first) as self-reported on their admissions application, and
  • Have been appointed as a Teaching Assistant

Exemptions (may change):

  • Students with an official valid (within the last two years) iBT Listening score of 25 and an iBT Speaking score of 26.
  • Undergraduate degrees and/or     
  • Continuous attendance of English-language schools since the age of 12 (or younger)
  • Students who served as teaching assistants at other institutions of higher learning in which the language of instruction is English, if they were listed as the instructor of record for a course or led a discussion section in English for at least one year, with a year defined as either two academic semesters or three academic quarters.
  • Requests for exceptions regarding the SPEC  can be submitted for evaluation to a committee consisting of the Director of ESL Programs, the Associate Dean for Administrative Affairs in the Graduate College, and a representative from University Human Resources.

Requests for exemption and exceptions must come from the department by the deadline, not the student.   Deadlines to register students for the SPEC are:

  • March 1  

NOT Exemptions:

  • Students who come from a country where English is one of the official languages.
  • Students who are U.S. permanent residents or U.S. citizens whose first language is not English.

All NEW UI students must meet with their advisor prior to registration.  There is no worry about getting into any of the classes we teach.  

  • IF you are an Actuarial Science MS or PhD student you will need to meet with Professor Shyamalkumar.  Email him after August 12 at [email protected] to set a time to meet to discuss what classes to take, it may be on Zoom or in his office (233 Schaeffer Hall).

New Graduate College Welcome and Orientation, August 21

The Graduate College Fall 2024 Graduate Student Orientation event will take place on Wednesday, August 21, 2024.  A registration form will be sent to your UI email sometime this early summer from the Graduate College. All new doctoral and master’s students are invited to attend.  

Financially Supported Graduate Students must come in person and present required documents for employment verification.

All graduate students will have a mailbox in our main office.  The faculty do as well.  Please check your mailbox at least once a week!

Office Desk Assignment

Nearly all supported students will have a desk in one of our offices.  The assignment priority (in this order) includes Ph.D. and Fellowship candidates, research assistants, half-time teaching assistants, quarter-time teaching assistants and lastly graders.  Having a desk is a privilege and should be used only for university business.  Office assignments will be given to students on, August 23.  Keys are checked out ONLY after that time.  Please remember to keep the rooms clean and take out all trash to the large bins in the main hallways.

Set-up your University of Iowa Email

All University of Iowa students are required to activate their assigned uiowa.edu email address, as all official communication from university offices are now sent via email, rather than hard copy. This address usually follows the pattern [email protected]   (However, often a number is also attached.) 

To activate the account:

  • Log on to  MyUI
  • Click on My UIowa / My Email / Request Email Account
  • Complete the specified steps.

Students who prefer to maintain only their work or home email addresses can do so by routing the uiowa.edu email to a work or home account. To do so, follow these steps:

  • Click on My UIowa / My Email / Update Email Routing Address

Important Notes:

  • If your uiowa.edu email address is routed to a different account, you will  not  need to change your address in ICON, as your messages will already forward to your routed address.
  • Log on to MYUI.
  • Click on My UIowa / My Email / Email Account Filter bulk mail.
  • Make sure that none of the categories are checked.

Required Graduate Assistants Teaching Courses:

  • ONLINE CLASS Requirement: Sexual Harassment Prevention Edu.  Use your HawkID and password to log into Employee Self Service. Click the Personal tab, next (under Learning and Development) click on Sexual Harassment Prevention Edu., follow instructions.
  • ONLINE CLASS Requirement:  Federal Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), Use your HawkID and password to log into Employee Self Service. Click the Personal tab, next (under Learning and Development) next click on Available Online Icon Courses, next FERPA Training, then click on View Details twice and the last click will be to Enroll in this ICON Course Session.
  • A six-hour orientation program will be required of all students who are certified at level A or B and are teaching for the first time.  This orientation helps new teaching assistants understand the culture of the U.S. classroom and treats topics such as student expectations, teacher-student relationships, and understanding and answering student questions. Discussion focuses on suggestions for maximizing comprehensibility in spoken English. This course meets twice for 3 hours early in the semester. Both meetings are held in the evening.

ANAHEIM, Calif. — The surging Yankees rotation has its first in-season injury, and Clarke Schmidt isn’t coming back anytime soon.

Schmidt will be shut down for four to six weeks with a right lat strain that landed him on the injured list Thursday, manager Aaron Boone said, dealing a blow to a rotation that has thrived even without its ace, Gerrit Cole.

Speaking after Thursday’s 8-3 win over the Angels , Schmidt said he was hoping to get back to throwing even sooner, potentially within three to four weeks.

Clarke Schmidt was placed on the injured list Thursday.

Even still, typically for pitchers, the length of a shutdown is about equal to the time it takes to build back up, meaning Schmidt could be sidelined for around two months.

“It’s definitely devastating,” Schmidt said. “I’m probably having the most fun I’ve ever had playing this game in my career. Not only having success, but the team’s winning, the pitching staff’s doing really well, and it’s just fun being able to go out there and compete every five days with these guys.

“A big part of me is I pride myself on being available and being a guy they can rely on every five days to go out there and give them a chance to win ballgames. So a big part of me feels like I’m letting the team down because I’m not doing that part of being available every five days.”

Cody Poteet will be called up from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to fill Schmidt’s spot in the rotation and start on Saturday against the Giants.

In the interim, reliever Cody Morris was recalled on Thursday to provide bullpen insurance.

Schmidt had last pitched on Sunday against the Padres, after which he said he didn’t feel his best physically but grinded through it.

Then the right-hander did not recover well in the coming days and was unable to go through his throwing program, which led the Yankees to send him for an MRI exam on Wednesday and a meeting with Dr. Neal ElAttrache on Thursday.

Schmidt had posted a 2.52 ERA through his first 11 starts as he continued to develop and mature as a full-time starter.

He stayed healthy last season while piling up a career-high 159 innings, smashing his previous mark.

“Obviously, Clarke’s been one of the guys that has been pitching so well, so it stinks for him,” Boone said before the Yankees closed out the series at Angel Stadium. “But hopefully we’ll have him down, get him on the mend and hopefully get him back at some point.”

Still, Boone didn’t shy away from reality.

“It’s going to be a while,” he said.

The Yankees have been without Cole since spring training because of nerve inflammation in his right elbow, but their rotation had still been a strength with Luis Gil filling in incredibly for him and the rest of the starters stepping up their game.

Entering Thursday, the Yankees had posted the second-lowest rotation ERA in the majors at 2.69.

That included an MLB-record 16 straight games in which their starter had pitched at least five innings and given up two or fewer runs.

Now, the Yankees will have to fill another void, with Cole not expected back until at least the end of June, though he could begin a rehab assignment next week.

And the questions about how the Yankees would open a spot for Cole’s return to the rotation — and whether Gil would be forced to the bullpen — have suddenly become moot.

Including Thursday night, Schmidt, Gil, Nestor Cortes, Carlos Rodon and Marcus Stroman had combined to start 57 of the Yankees’ first 58 games of the season — the lone exception being a spot start by Poteet in a doubleheader on April 13 in Cleveland.

Stroman is set to make it 58 of 59 on Friday before the Yankees’ stability will be disrupted.

Poteet is currently on the IL at Triple-A with a blister, but Boone said he has been throwing side sessions and will be good to go for Saturday.

The right-hander aced his spot start against the Guardians earlier this season, tossing six innings of one-run ball in a win.
