My favorite restaurant essay

Places we prefer vary depending on our taste, culture, mood, previous experience and our first impression of the place.

Today, I will talk about my favorite restaurant that I visited one day and left an impression of calm and quietness as well as the quality of the food and it’s tasty taste.

Italian cuisine is one of the most famous kitchens around the world and is one of the most luxurious and characteristic cuisines in the world. It is the origin of pasta and pizza that is unparalleled anywhere else.

The Italian restaurant is undoubtedly one of the most outstanding and magnificent food establishments in my city. Characterized by the quiet atmosphere, its light-colored interior and its elegant, glamorous decor, it was once a cafe before turning into a restaurant with many qualities of the former.

The restaurant offers delicious dining options, with Italian authentic flavor. Waiters in the restaurant are friendly and respectful.

This place is no less than a typical example of how to build a restaurant.

The restaurant serves many famous Italian meals.

The chicken soup with cream is a great start to any meal, and I have not found a restaurant serving it as here. I prefer the Chicken Caesar Salad after it.

My favorite dishes are the fettuccine Alfredo pasta with chicken, grilled chicken with cream and mushroom sauce. I love pizza of all kinds. They are all delicious and different options. Parmesan cheese is a good choice to accompany any Italian dish.

Canoloni Agnolotti with garlic and rosemary is one of the best Italian dishes. Agnolotti is a stuffed pasta and is very similar to ravioli, served with some rosemary and garlic. This dish is one of the distinctive foods in Italian cuisine.

Rap Arancini broccoli with marinara sauce is one of the best Italian dishes. It is rice balls with well fried broccoli and characterized by its golden color and served with marinara sauce.

The restaurant also offers different types of juices with meals. Such as lemon juice with mint mixed with crushed ice is an effective recipe for extinguishing the heat of the atmosphere.

The restaurant at the weekend is busy … my advice is to arrive early or book or call for booking to ensure a place.

The restaurant is rated 4 stars and its prices are high.

my favorite restaurant

My favorite restaurant for sure is one that specializes in chicken meals. The name of my favorite restaurant is “…?…”. It contains in the menu many recipes of chicken. I would prefer to order the Portuguese style chicken. So it contains a lot of hot spices. I prefer to choose the shape of the chicken and how to present it, whether it is with bones or boneless. Like a chicken burger or grilled chicken. Or other delicious recipes that I find very nice. I love to serve salads and appetizers first. Then serve the main meal in addition to some of the side dishes that I can add to the meal. All this is very nice to me.

my favourite restaurant essay

My favorite restaurant is an Italian restaurant called “…?…”. The best meal it serves is delicious and wonderful pizza. I like the way they prepare this pizza more than many other restaurants. I find it a nice way they cut the ingredients, I always find it thin and it is always fresh and of excellent quality.

The degree of cooking is great, always moderate and not too much. So I love it so much and I love eating it in this place so much. I can’t get rid of the wonderful smell that I can smell while it’s still on its way to me.

I certainly have that childish expression on my face because I long to take a piece of it and leave it a little in my mouth. I can never hide this expression no matter who I take with me to my favorite restaurant.

Of course, what makes me more determined for this restaurant is the experiences of others around me, friends and family, all of whom praise the wonderful taste of this restaurant.

I feel like I’m going there very soon, because this talk made me want to eat some pizza. I might go today, I don’t know if I could, but if I did, it would be very nice.

I also hope that everyone will be fortunate to find a favorite restaurant that he would like to return to with great anticipation.

restaurant essay

My favorite restaurant is very simple, I can not say that it is one of those large and famous restaurants that contain several stars, led by a skilled team of highly-acclaimed chefs.

My favorite restaurant is one of those small restaurants that the owner and one of his sons strive to manage and satisfy customers. Those restaurants you can find on the corner of the street.

They don’t have much food on the main menu but they do have a feeling of love and affection. I always order different food to try the items they have and they all feel the same as the food my mum made for me.

I like very much to order and eat meals that are served in famous restaurants, such as burgers, KFC pieces. Certainly not the same quality. But it makes me very happy. It’s great to see what it looks like in other places and get the closest taste to it. With a simple soft drink.

That’s all I can say in an essay about a restaurant in which I can express my experience. I wish in the future to finish my studies and be able to travel to broaden my horizons of thought. Visit famous restaurants and eat different meals. Until then, this simple restaurant will remain my favorite.

paragraph about restaurant

I like that the restaurant in which I eat my food contains Mexican or Indian recipes that contain sharp spices, especially chicken. I like to have the ability to choose in the size provided, such as a quarter to a whole chicken. Where I ask only for what is sufficient for me and there is nothing left. I also prefer that it be served with the meal, French fries and a large glass of soft water, such as Coca-Cola. I find such restaurants serving these meals very wonderful to me.

my favorite restaurant essay

It’s great that I can talk about my favorite restaurant. I like very much restaurants that have modern  menu on the food, the drinks and the dessert .

I am very attracted by those that are served as pumpkin sauce with cream. Or offer arugula juice. Things like this make me happy.

Eating in the restaurant is one of the good things. Since childhood, we did not encourage eating in restaurants a lot due to the loss of beneficial nutrients. The orders are always saturated with oils and fats.

But because of the change and the experience of some new varieties, I became a lot more encouraged to eat in restaurants. One of my most favorite restaurants is the tomato Indian restaurant. They can always surprise me and offer one of those new meals or offer a modern sauce that I like.

my favorite restaurant short essay

My favorite restaurant is near my house. The name of the restaurant is “………” This is definitely my favorite restaurant because the price is very cheap. I can for as little as “Put the price of the meal here ‘ I can eat a whole bowl of pasta.

But what is really special about this restaurant is that I can get an additional amount of the same size and the same price if I want more . So, I like the idea of little money and a lot of food. I love going to this restaurant very much.

my favourite restaurant essay for class 2

My favorite restaurant is dedicated to fresh seafood. I love eating recipes from this restaurant, such as the shrimp dish mixed with cream and garlic. I am amazed at the consistency of this dish.

I really like the innovative way they present this dish, so I highly recommend it to all my friends and family. It is always a pleasure to return for this dish at High Seas Restaurant.

my favourite restaurant essay for class 3

On occasions, I always go with my family to eat at my favorite restaurant, me and my siblings. The name of this restaurant is Crazy about you.

Your imagination will surely go with this wonderful name. And it is worth it in fact, it is dedicated to food and dancing as well, as it contains an area dedicated to dancing in different forms. There are always new people and different requests for dances that express their reference.

Eating is more fun while watching, and my brothers and I often participate in dancing. It makes us have a lot of fun and have a great time.

I like it very much when my dad and mom share a quiet dance. It makes us feel so happy when we see them smiling and nothing distracts them for a few minutes.

This place is my favorite and one day when I make a family I would like to go back and spend such a wonderful family time.

my favourite restaurant essay for class 6

My favorite restaurant is sweet and savory restaurant. This restaurant is famous for serving very delicious meals such as burgers, chicken and Italian pasta. It also features wonderful dessert meals, whether hot or cold.

This place is my favorite because I always love variety and innovation and I don’t like to eat the same meal whenever I go there. I would rather try all their varieties. Especially sweet dishes that always make me feel happy and re-energize me after eating a heavy meal.

In fact, I love to eat a lot and have a great appetite. I like to eat until I feel full. So this is my favorite restaurant because it serves a large plate of food. Not like those famous restaurants that serve small samples in the middle of the plate.

I would very much love to come back and eat there from time to time and try some spicy food like Indian food. Although they are not specialized in it, but they offer some wonderful simple meals that contain different spices. I also like the way the meat is grilled and the spices used. It has a sharp and clear taste.

Definitely very soon I will be going again to this restaurant and I am glad that I have a favorite restaurant that can make me happy.

my favourite restaurant essay for class 7

My favorite restaurant is very simple and it’s just a car parked by the road near my house with a man working on it always smiling. He makes snacks called hot dog sandwiches. Its price is very low, it tastes great, it is nice to talk with friends and eat in the middle of the road where the air and friends are.

I often have it on my way back from school. And before going to exercise, I find it wonderful to eat this meal. It makes me feel energized.  My friends in training often ask to bring them some. Everyone loves a hot dog, it is suitable for all times. Quick to prepare, easy to eat and completely satiating.

Of course, this is not a famous restaurant or one of the famous dishes, but always the most important thing is psychological comfort and happiness. This place always makes me happy. All I need is a hot dog sandwich and a glass of soda water.

my first visit to a restaurant essay 250 words

My first visit to a restaurant was years ago and it was the famous McDonald’s. My family used to take me there to have a happy meal and to provide a space for the children to play.

Always in these restaurants in every country you will find a dedicated area for children in which they can play and practice a lot of activities.

I remember my first day getting a good meal and a gift too. The gift was a small car. I was very happy with it, I didn’t want to play with it at the time, but kept it until I got home and then played with it.

I remember very well that I was able to keep it intact and working for several years later. One of the wonderful things that delight children are such gifts.

I remember the games in the place and there was this room full of little balls that we jump on, and we swim in trying to get out, and dive inside and throw them all over the place.

I also remember participating with other children in the race for those who climb to the skating game, and shouting loudly while skating.

Definitely this place is my favorite and I like to go back and eat there, and it would be great if I got one of the gifts they offer.

It is great that my family took me to this place where I was able to create very wonderful memories. And build a good family bond with them. Such outings make you always want to accompany them, eat with them, and visit different places.

Of course, I now have several different experiences from visiting restaurants, but my first restaurant remains the best, and returning to it makes me feel happiness that I often need it.

I love the idea of a place that makes me happy and I want to go back to it and bring back some good memories. Thank you McDonald’s for being a partner in this happiness memories.

[You will have to talk about the topic for one to two minutes. You have one minute to think about what you are going to say. You can make some notes to help you if you wish.]

To practice with past questions, please look at  Speaking Part 2  in more detail.

Describe your favorite restaurant.

Model Answer 1

My favorite restaurant is called “The Rustic Grill.” It’s located in the heart of my city, surrounded by vibrant shops and an atmospheric park.

From the outside, The Rustic Grill has a traditional vibe, with an ivy-covered brick exterior and warm, welcoming lights that glow invitingly. Inside, it’s charmingly vintage with rustic wooden tables, soft ambient lighting, and a huge brick fireplace that adds a cozy, homely touch.

The Rustic Grill is known for its diverse menu featuring fusion cuisine. They combine the flavors of traditional local food with an innovative international twist. From grilled steaks to gourmet salads and decadent desserts, there is something for everyone.

What makes The Rustic Grill my favorite restaurant is the exceptional dining experience it offers. The harmonious blend of excellent food, warm ambiance, and friendly service makes every visit a memorable one.

The answer covers all the points on the cue card in a logical and engaging way. The use of descriptive language paints a vivid picture of the restaurant and the food it serves. Additionally, the speaker provides a personal connection to the restaurant, making it more engaging and real for the listener.

Model Answer 2

I want to talk about my favorite restaurant, The Ocean’s Bounty, located by the seafront in my hometown.

The restaurant is housed in a classic white-washed building with a spacious terrace that overlooks the mesmerizing sea. Inside, the décor is nautical-themed, with shades of blue and white dominating the space and glass windows offering breathtaking sea views.

The Ocean’s Bounty specializes in seafood. The menu ranges from freshly-caught fish grilled to perfection, to rich, creamy seafood pasta, and even exotic sushi platters. They prioritize local, sustainable fishing practices, which adds to the appeal.

I love The Ocean’s Bounty not only for its exquisite food, but also for the tranquil, serene atmosphere it provides. Dining there always feels like an escape from the city’s hustle and bustle, making it my favourite restaurant.

The candidate provides a clear and detailed description of the restaurant, covering its location, interior, food, and why they like it. There is excellent use of vocabulary, particularly in describing the decor and the meals served. The candidate maintains a steady flow throughout, making the narrative engaging and easy to follow.

Model Answer 3

I’d like to talk about my favorite restaurant, The Spice Route, situated in the bustling downtown area of our city.

The restaurant’s exterior is beautifully adorned with colorful lights and intricate Indian motifs. Inside, it is like stepping into a different world, with vibrant, richly decorated interiors that reflect the heritage and culture of India.

The Spice Route is famous for its authentic Indian cuisine. They offer a wide variety of dishes, from tandoori chicken to creamy butter paneer and from spicy biryanis to delectable Indian sweets.

The reason why The Spice Route is my favorite restaurant is its commitment to authenticity. The flavourful dishes, coupled with the cultural ambiance, transport me to the heart of India with every visit, making it an experience more than just a meal.

This response is thorough and well-expressed. It effectively addresses all points on the cue card. The use of descriptive language adds a sensory dimension to the narrative, enhancing the listener’s understanding and engagement. The speaker’s explanation of why the restaurant is their favorite is particularly compelling and personal.

Model Answer 4

My favorite restaurant is Bella Italia, a quaint little Italian place nestled in the quieter part of town.

From the outside, Bella Italia has a charming old-world look with cobblestone walls and blooming window boxes. The inside is equally charming, with warm, rustic décor, wooden beams on the ceiling, and vintage Italian posters adorning the walls.

Bella Italia offers a mouth-watering array of Italian dishes. From wood-fired pizzas to homemade pastas and creamy risottos, every dish is a testament to the rich and diverse Italian cuisine.

What makes Bella Italia my favorite restaurant is the combination of delicious food, warm, welcoming ambiance, and the feeling of being in a small Italian trattoria right in my city. It is a place where I find comfort and joy in the food and the surroundings.

This response is effective, as it details all aspects of the cue card. The speaker uses vibrant descriptions to paint a vivid picture of the restaurant’s exterior, interior, and type of food served. The reasons for the restaurant being the speaker’s favourite are clear and relatable, making the response engaging and authentic.

Describe a Restaurant [IELTS Speaking Part 2]

Posted by David S. Wills | Sep 26, 2018 | IELTS Tips , Speaking | 1

Describe a Restaurant [IELTS Speaking Part 2]

In the IELTS speaking exam, you may be asked about almost any common part of life. There are some predictable topics you often encounter, and most of these are broad human experiences – you know, sports and education and family, etc. In part two, you need to describe something . This could be a person, a place, or an experience.

In the past, I have written articles and recorded sample answers for many part two topics, from animals to books to people . Today, we are going to look at another IELTS speaking part 2 cue card, which asks you to describe a restaurant.

Reading the Cue Card

When you are presented with an IELTS speaking part 2 question, it will come in the form of a cue card – that is a piece of paper with some instructions on it. You need to follow these instructions carefully and then give your answer. In order to give an appropriate answer, you should read the cue card and make sure you fully understand it.

Here is our cue card for this lesson:

Describe your favourite restaurant. Sushi platter. You should say: where it is what it looks like inside and outside what kinds of foods they serve and explain what makes this restaurant so special to you and others.

Think about some basic facts:

  • What do you need to describe? a restaurant
  • Can you describe any restaurant? no, it needs to be your favourite
  • location (where)
  • appearance (what it looks like)
  • menu (what kind of food)
  • Can you say you dislike it? no, this is only about a restaurant you really like
  • Should you say anything else? you can, but don’t go off topic

To review, this cue card asks the candidate to describe their favourite restaurant, giving some basic information about it, and explaining why they like it.

Making Notes and Preparing to Speak

When you receive the cue card, you should take a moment to read it carefully and analyze the instructions, and then begin making notes. At this point, you have just one minute to make notes . You can later use these notes to speak.

It is essential that you don’t try to write too much. Think of some useful vocabulary or an interesting phrase that you might incorporate, but mostly write what you want to say in very brief note form. Candidates who try to write full sentences will do very poorly in the speaking exam. You simply don’t have enough time.

It is important to practice this skill before doing the actual exam. Look at cue cards online and then practice writing down notes. How much can you think and write in just one minute? If you practice making notes then it will be easier in the final exam.

IELTS speaking part 2 notes

My brief notes.

Here are my notes for the cue card:

Japanese food – sushi and sashimi beer and spirits Beatles memorabilia music Downtown mall Good food and service; clean

As you can see, I didn’t write much. There are no full sentences, and no grammar. It is just a bare outline. These notes would help me to speak easily, but wouldn’t take a long time to write.

Remember that no one will ever read your notes. Don’t be self-conscious of how you write, or any mistakes you make. Their only purpose is to help you speak freely during the next section.

Sample Answer

After writing your notes, you will have to speak for between one and two minutes. The most important thing is not to speak for less than one minute. That is essential. If you speak for too long, the examiner will stop you. Remember to speak slowly and calmly. If you speak too fast, you will quickly run through your notes and finish in less than a minute!

Here is my sample answer to this part 2 question:

Beatles memorabilia

Beatles memorabilia.

My favourite restaurant is a Japanese restaurant near my house. I don’t know the name because I can’t read Japanese very well, but I often go there and always enjoy it. Of course, they serve Japanese food there, such as sushi and sashimi, but there are many other types of dish. It has an extensive menu. They also have draft and bottled beer, as well as a few spirits. The restaurant is unique because although it is a Japanese restaurant, it has a lot of Beatles memorabilia. They also pay lots of Beatles music there, which I think is strange. People are always confused when they enter because outside it looks like a typical Japanese restaurant, but inside it is a mix of eastern and western design. The restaurant is located not far from my house, in a mall situated in the city’s downtown area. I really like it because it’s got great food and the service is better than most places around here. It’s also quite clean.

Video Answer

Here is my sample answer in video form. You will need to skip ahead if you want to only view the video.

Notes on Language

Notice that I didn’t use any particularly difficult language above, except maybe the word “memorabilia.” This word means “memorable objects” and is often used when describing strange decorations in restaurants that relate to culture.

In terms of specific restaurant vocabulary, I used very little. The verb “serve” is used to refer to a restaurant giving food to its customers. Although I didn’t use it, this can be turned into a noun that refers to waiters and waitresses in a gender-neutral way – “server”.

I used the phrase “extensive menu” to mean that the menu has many items. This would be a common way someone might refer to an impressive menu in a restaurant.

In terms of alcohol, “draft” is the sort of beer that comes out of a tap, and “spirits” refers to stronger sorts of alcohol like whisky, vodka, and tequila.

Overcoming challenges in analytical essay writing, how should i format my college essay properly, my favorite restaurant: rivenee’s essay sample, example.

Admin

As a child, I was not fond of eating out. My family would eat at a restaurant, diner, or buffet at least once a week, often more than once. Every time we went anywhere, but for a little place called Rivenee’s , it was a challenge for my parents to find proper food and a nice atmosphere. Rivenee’s was that lucky exception—I loved the place and this made my parents love it too. The restaurant seemed magical and fascinating to me when I was an elementary school kid, and surprisingly, the place still fascinates me today. Recently, when I visited my old family house for Thanksgiving, I was astonished and pleased to find out the place still operated and, in fact, was still run by the same family. Apart from the house in which I grew up, Rivenee’s is probably the dearest place to me in the small town, just outside of San Ramon, where I was born and raised.

Rivenee’s is a small and cozy place, and this is what probably garnered my love of the restaurant initially. This, and the people who worked and still work there. Unlike more spacious restaurants, diners, and chain buffets my parents also took me to, Rivenee’s was a family-owned business run by a middle-aged couple, Janette and Derek. When I think about them now, I still remember their warm smiles and sincere care for each customer and employee. Mrs. Jan, as I would call her, loved orange shades, both in her outfits and in the restaurant’s interior decor. Warm orange and yellow-pomegranate furniture, sunny-colored napkins and curtains, country-style hard wooden tables and stools at the bar—everything was solid and comfortable about the place. Mrs. Jan would always have orange in her outfit— to match the place, as I then thought. Be it a bright orange ribbon in her hair, or a peachy neat cotton dress, or red nail polish—this woman belonged to the place like nobody else, and I doubt it was only the external resemblance.

Her husband Mr. Derek was older, with graying hair and a miniature mustache, which made him look a bit strict to me at the time. But the moment he started talking with his deep, soft, and half-laughing voice, with that particular tender frog-in-the-throat vibe, he would make me listen to his every word with an open mouth. The man was like a magician to me: mysterious and a bit scary even, yet so fascinating and magnetic. There was his daughter as well, the first love of mine. She was a blonde pony-tailed girl of 7 or 8 with cute bangs, lively, and active. She would be running around the place, attracting the attention of visitors with her sonorous laughter that made you laugh in return, or at least smile back at the small, sunny creature cruising around the place.

When I visited Rivenee’s after all these years, the memories flashed back through my mind in a heartbeat, and I suddenly felt like a child again. The place was still an illuminating planet of orange and light, yet comfortably relaxing and pulsating with fresh energy. I instantly felt like I was home, and a big bouquet of freshly cut wild daisies, neatly tied with an orange ribbon made me think of Mrs. Jan. The food tasted the same—crispy and puffy home-made corn bread was my favorite part of the meal then, and it tasted like it did in my childhood to me now. My parents still eat at Rivenee’s from time to time, still order their favorite specials and enjoy the evening with Mrs. Jan and Mr. Derek, remembering the good old times.

Descriptive essays seem to be a piece of cake in terms of the writing process. What can be easier than just telling about your experience? However, there’s a fair share of challenges. Finding the right epithets and comparisons can be hard sometimes. Sample Answer 1

Here is the sample for the “Describe a restaurant that you like” topic

I carry this keenness to explore cafes and restaurants wherever I go. So, just the last month, I paid a visit to Gurugram on account of some personal work. Once I got done with my work, I commenced my exploration of restaurants. And that is when I came across The Ivy Restaurant, which is located at Baani Square.

The restaurant serves an extensive range of Mediterranean food, Continental food, Middle Eastern food, Contemporary food, European food, Lebanese food, American food, Italian food, and more. In addition to this, they also serve special diets, such as vegetarian-friendly, halal, vegan diets, and gluten-free options. Apart from this, you can also get full meals, such as lunch, dinner, and brunch.

The first time I visited the restaurant, I relished the ambiance of this place. The interiors are mesmerizing, and the arena is relatively peaceful. I could sit there for hours, enjoying delectable food and drinks prepared by skilled chefs.

So, keeping this fruitful experience in mind, I revisited this place before returning home. One of the best things about this place is that it is wheelchair accessible; thus, it is reachable by everybody. Moreover, people can even get takeaways, and table services and enjoy several other convenient ways to buy their food.

Sample Answer 2

I would like to talk about a Japanese restaurant I read about on a food blogger’s website. The restaurant named X is located in an alley on ABC Street which is popular with lovers of Japanese food. As I live in XYZ, I can’t go to that restaurant on a regular basis. Thus, every time I get the chance, I love to get there with my colleagues to enjoy a palatable meal.

This restaurant serves some kinds of Japanese traditional food. Among them, “ramen” – a traditional noodle Japanese is the most sought-after dish by this restaurant’s customers. It offers some famous kinds of ramen, with self-made noodles, making a wonderful and true ramen taste. The other thing which makes me fall in love with this restaurant is the Japanese culture when I eat out there. Chefs and waiters are always kind and polite, but smoking or too much noise is never allowed there. Thus, as soon as you get into the restaurant, it seems like you are immediately brought to Japan to experience the cuisine and the culture. That’s why it’s enjoyable to be there though it is located in a small area.

Despite the fact that I really love our country’s cuisine, sometimes I choose to enjoy food from other cultures, and Japan is always at the top of the list . The art of Japanese cuisine and the cozy ambiance this restaurant creates do impress me a lot.

Here are the vocabularies for “describe a restaurant that you like” with examples:

Model Answer 1:

Moving to New Delhi from a small town because of the job, of course, has its disadvantages. But, it has some benefits as well, and one such benefit is that you have many, literally a countless number of great restaurants to try your favorite food. Today, I would like to talk about one such restaurant which has been my favorite since the day I moved to the capital of my country.

The name of the restaurant is “Bukhara” which is located in the diplomatic enclave of New Delhi. This high-end fine dining restaurant has an extravagant ambience and stylish aura which reflects the modernity and glamorous style of “Indian Royalty”. The interior wall of this famous, all-Indian restaurant is made of expensive tiles with a perfect lighting scheme to illuminate them. The tables are not placed too close to each other either in order to ensure the privacy of the customers. The plates and cutleries look exceptionally good and elegant which perfectly blends in with the royal interior of the restaurant. And, as for the foods, the celebrated restaurant serves authentic Mughlai foods such as Murgh Tandoori, Tandoori Guchchi, sumptuous Mutton Biryani, Chaamp Taajdar (mutton chops braised and grilled), authentic Butter Chicken and Daal along with Malai tikka and Raarhya Meat which are served with crisp Rotis and Ulta Tawa parathas. It also serves “Sarson da saag” and “Makki di roti”. Finally, Dal Bukhara, served with the Tandoori Naan, Kastoori kebab, Reshmi kebab would also satisfy your taste buds anytime.

It is my favorite restaurant mainly because they always serve fresh food with the best ingredients available in the market. Besides, whenever I come to this restaurant, the staffs always treat me like a “royal” with a very friendly attitude. I love this restaurant also because it always serves the foods at the right time, after ordering for them, without keeping me waiting and hungry. Finally, this is my favorite restaurant also because it perfectly blends the taste of different kinds of Indian cuisines from different parts of India.

Model Answer 2:

Thank you very much for giving me the opportunity to talk about my favorite restaurant. The name of my favorite restaurant is Diner’s Paradise and it is located in the downtown of the city I live in. I like it because it offers a nice environment and delicious food. Moreover, I have many pleasant memories related to this establishment. My parents celebrated some of my birthday parties there, our college friends arranged get-together parties twice, and on one occasion, one of my cousins’ marriage ceremonies was celebrated at that very place; and all these events make it special to me.

The restaurant has three floors and the sitting arrangement is extraordinary which does not compromise privacy, unlike many other restaurants. Paintings of famous artists hang on the wall and the place is clean. The interior decoration is simply gorgeous. Besides, the ground floor can park more than 50 cars. It also has a large playground for children. Finally, the front view of the restaurant is unique as it gives the aura of a green and lavish garden.

The restaurant offers several dishes including continental menus, Italian, Thai, Indian, Pakistani and local menus along with delightful exotic desserts. Not to mention, the prices are reasonable and the food is served reasonably quickly, contrary to some other eateries where you have to wait for a long for your food to be served. Besides, the attendants and other staff members are friendly and they treat the guests cordially. The restaurant offers a wide range of dishes to pick from and no additional service charge is imposed on the final bill. The soft background music and instrumentals make the environment more enjoyable and soothing. As I have said, tables are not congested and people can enjoy their personal conversations and enjoy sports on large TVs. The large glass-made windows offer a city view which makes the place worth visiting. The place is famous for dining and I have often noticed many foreign tourists visiting the restaurant. It’s a good thing that the authority invites customer feedback and comments on food, service, and dining experience and they take prompt actions against customer complaints.

I would say, this is a really nice restaurant to go to and enjoy the tasty food and I like it very much.

Model Answer 3:

Thank you very much for this nice topic. I would like to talk about my favorite restaurant and mention where it is, what it looks like, the kinds of food it serves, and why it is so special to me.

My favorite restaurant is in England! It is actually in the suburbs of the city of Sheffield where I live in. The restaurant is on a busy street very near to a large park. It is quite a small and hectic place called Jonty’s because Jonty is the name of the person who set up the business.

From the outside, the restaurant doesn’t look very impressive. It has large glass windows at the front and some benches outside for people to sit on if they are waiting to go in. There used to be a large sign with the name of the restaurant written on it in big letters, but recently they have taken down the sign and not yet replaced it! Inside there are lots of square wooden tables, each with about four chairs around them. The restaurant is on two levels, I prefer to go upstairs to the first floor because there you can sometimes get a window seat and enjoy watching people as they go past in the street outside.

The restaurant serves mainly breakfast and lunch meals. It does really good coffee – I like their latte’s best – and lots of sandwiches, salads and special soups. The restaurant also has a selection of delicious, gooey homemade cakes. However, when I go, I always have the same thing – scrambled egg on wholemeal toast with mushrooms, because that is what I like best!

The restaurant is very special to me and my friends because we meet there every Saturday. On Saturdays about 500 people go to the local park at 9.00 in the morning to take part in a 5 km run. Afterward, I like to go to breakfast at Jonty’s with three of my best friends. We feel we deserve a big breakfast after our run, and we enjoy catching up with each other’s news over a leisurely meal together.

So if ever you are in Sheffield, I hope you will find Jonty’s and enjoy it as much as I do.

Model Answer 4:

‘Dine Excellence’ is the largest restaurant in our city and this is my favorite eatery in my area. This place offers a great dining experience and the view, both inside and outside, is spectacular. This is a beautiful restaurant with a great price and a clean environment. I often go there to enjoy my meal with my wife and on some occasions, with my friends.

It is a four-storied restaurant and the 2nd floor is reserved for parties and special events. The playground for children is large enough and a good number of toys are placed there for children to have fun. The roof-top is my personal favorite as it gives a very clear view of the surrounding nature and the clear blue sky. If it is not raining, I like to enjoy my dinner on the roof-top. The interior decoration of the restaurant is something that makes it stand out from the crowd. The soft music, delicious dishes, and well-mannered and prompt staffs make it a worth visiting place for food lovers.

The variety of dishes this restaurant offers is another great thing about it. Someone will find almost any local or famous foreign menu there and the master cooks make the food tasty and worth enjoying. Interestingly, the price of the food in this restaurant is comparatively cheaper and that’s the main reason I love this restaurant so much – it is indeed pocket-friendly.  Many other restaurants in my city offer delightful dishes and good services, but most of them are expensive.

The weekly music concert and discount for regular customers are two other reasons I prefer it more than other restaurants. I was very surprised to get as high as 30-35% discount on a few occasions and they told me that this was their way of rewarding loyal customers. I would recommend anyone in this city to enjoy the delicious menu this restaurant offers and I am sure most of them would love the experience.

Tips for answering this Cue Card Topic:

You should talk about a restaurant that you know well. Do not pick a renowned restaurant that you know very little about. You are free to describe the interior design, service, external environment, dishes that are served in the restaurant the way you like. It does not have to be an exact match with the restaurant you actually go to a lot. You should add some of your memorable events of this restaurant. Some of the common features that people like about a restaurant are:

1. Delicious dishes. 2. Reasonable prices. 3. Easy to go there from home. 4. Quiet and nice environment. 5. Attractive decoration and view. 6. Playground for kids. 7. Open space. 8. Privacy. 9. Service and behavior of the staff. 10. Special treats for the regular customer. 11. A variety of dishes. 12. Past memory related to the restaurant. 13. Recommendations from friends and family members. 14. Discounts, etc.

In your answer, you can use some of the above-mentioned points and expand them to make it sound realistic.

Necessary vocabulary for this cue card:

The appetizer, beverage, bill, cheque, buffet, complimentary, delicious, dessert, fine dining, homemade, patio, reservation, self-serve, side dish, waiter, waitress, set menu, cutlery, napkin, starter, main course, tip.

If you prepare for this cue card topic you should be able to answer the following cue cards as well:

1. Talk about a place you often go to. ( You can say that you often go to this restaurant ) 2. Describe a place you would recommend to your friends to visit. 3. Describe a party center you went to recently. 4. Describe a restaurant you recently visited. 5. Talk about a place where you often meet your friends. 6. Describe a restaurant that you enjoyed going to.

Part 3: Details Discussion:

Q: Which one is better: homemade food or food from a restaurant? Answer: This question is really enticing. It seems to me that homemade food is healthier; of course, because you are completely responsible for its preparation and you know exactly the ingredients that are included. For example, you are aware of the quantity of salt, olive oil, sugar, pepper et cetera.

On the other hand, the food at restaurants is undoubtedly more delicious and satiating, but it isn’t as wholesome as the former. These types of food are high in saturated fats and oils and they aren’t easily digestible. So I would argue that restaurant food is tastier but homemade food is healthier. Moreover, food in restaurants is expensive while homemade food is not.

Q: What traditional food do you have in your country? Answer: For the last three years I have been living in the UK but I am a native of Greece so I would like to talk about Greek traditional foods. Greek cuisine is renowned worldwide and not without a reason. First and foremost we have the famous Greek souvlaki combined with tzatziki. This is the food that anyone who comes to Greece wants to taste. Going further, I can think of Greek mousakas which is a really tasty dish and it consists of potatoes, eggplants, minced beef, and cream. Similar to mousakas, pastitsio is equally delicious with some variations. There are many other types of food, but I think that those I have already mentioned are the ”landmark” of the Greek diet.

Q. What types of food do tourists in your city prefer? Answer: The types of food tourists in Greece try and enjoy vary greatly. Some tourists come here to enjoy traditional food like Barbouni, Dolmades, Kokoretsi, and Gigandes. Some try fast food and like to visit a food court that has brands like KFC or McDonald’s. Finally, many solely prefer vegan items like Fava, Spanakopita, and Skordalia.

I have even seen some tourists who try anything they find interesting and young tourists mostly fall into this category.

Tips:  You can talk about some local food items from your hometown, or from your own country as well for the above question. You can see some examples below:

England: fish and chips, different kinds of meat pies such as kidney, cottage, steak and pork pies, black peas, scotch eggs, roast beef, and Yorkshire pudding. Italy:  pizza, spaghetti, breadsticks, acquacotta, carbonara, tortellini. France:  soupe à l’oignon, boeuf bourguignon, flamiche, ratatouille. Germany:  doner kebab, currywurst, wiener schnitzel, kasespatzle. USA:  pancakes, club sandwich, cheeseburger, macaroni and cheese, pumpkin and apple pie. India:  Chhole Bhature, Rogan Josh, Makki Ki Roti, Matar Paneer, Panipuri, Tundury Kebab, Hilsa Fish Curry, Vada Pav, Hyderabadi Biryani, Dosa, Indian Chaat. Japan:  Sushi, Tempura, Sashimi, Udon, Kaiseki.

🍽️ Restaurant Essay. Writing Tips

Here are some valuable tips on restaurant essay writing. Use these hacks to save your time and nerves and make a perfect writing piece.

Start a Restaurant Essay with Research

Research essays of other scholars and professional critics’ reviews. Based on the discovered information, decide what kind of essay suits you the best. Also, research the restaurant that you will describe in the paper.

Here are the things you need to consider:

  • Vocabulary. Notice the specific language that appears in this type of writing. Make a small glossary and search for the meaning of frequently used words.
  • Structure. Probably, you need to write a descriptive paper. Research its structure and observe how others implement it in long and short essays.
  • Critical thinking. Everything you have found needs evaluation. Not all of the information is relevant. And more importantly, not all of the sources are worth your attention.
  • Your notes. Make sure you include all the ideas you’ve found for your restaurants essay.

The picture provides tips on how to research for a restaurant essay properly.

Be Objective in Any Kind of Essay about Restaurant

Sure, the paper should reflect your opinion. But don’t make it a Google review. You need to support your thoughts with solid argumentation and evidence.

Follow these tips to be more objective:

  • Use exact numbers. For example, instead of “many,” write the number or percentage.
  • Write in the third person. Unless you have other instructions, avoid using the word “I” and such statements as “I believe,” “I think,” or “in my opinion.” But if your topic is “My favorite restaurant,” or you do a review based on your experience, it is okay to make it first-person.
  • Don’t use words that can exaggerate your writing. Such terms as “very,” “really,” “never” are better to avoid.
  • Support your statements with facts. If you express a thought, prove it with credible sources.

Outline Your Restaurant Essay

You need an outline to create a roadmap to your restaurant essay. It is also useful when it comes to planning your time and the content of the paper.

  • Introduction. Explain the focus of the paper and provide background. Introduce the questions that you will answer in the following paragraphs. Don’t forget to make the last sentence your thesis statement. It will be a summary of what you will describe in the body of your essay.
  • Body . The content of body paragraphs depends on the type of paper. For example, in an argumentative essay, each passage presents a separate argument. Let’s suppose you write an essay about your favorite restaurant. Describe these aspects separately: cuisine, interior, and service. Add details and analyze them.
  • Conclusion. Summarize the main points of your essay and synthesize the information. Restate your thesis and don’t introduce any new information.

The picture provides information about the three major components of a restaurant essay.

Here are a few samples of essays on restaurants and cuisine. Use them as references for your future writing. You can also find some inspiration or ideas in the passages.

Restaurant Review Essay: Modernity in the Heart of Brooklyn

Modernity is a contemporary experimental restaurant located in the heart of Brooklyn. A blue neon sign which blinks from time to time attracts your attention immediately. This restaurant is a good place for people who look for the unusual interior, interesting food, and fast service. The restaurant looks like a futuristic mix of bright colors, unusual furniture, and futurism. There are two floors, a bar on the first floor and tables of different sizes and shapes on the second floor. The walls are decorated with abstract paintings, pictures of aliens and UFOs, and small neon signs like the one above the entrance. The staff wears uniforms that remind space suits. Light techno music and static sounds are playing. The restaurant is consistent with its name. The menu might seem confusing when you first open it. Such dishes as “Martian’s brain” or “Unicorn’s milk” turn out to be pumpkin soup served with colorful bread and a milkshake. I ordered a dish called “Jupiter on vacation” and a “Weightlessness” drink. They brought me a chicken bowl with blue seasoning that reminded Jupiter and a dark cherry drink with zero calories. Modernity is a place where you can try amazing food, but it is pretty simple in taste. As soon as I arrived and chose a table, a smiling waiter gave me the menu. I just had to press the “Emergency evacuation” button to see him again and place my order. They brought it in five minutes, which is quite fast for a restaurant full of visitors. The waiters and waitresses seem busy and going from one part of the restaurant to another. I recommend visiting Modernity at least once to see the way it looks and enjoy the service. It is a place where every detail is conceptual and exciting. If you are looking for a restaurant where you can take some photos and enjoy a creative atmosphere, Modernity is a good choice.
A cafe called Cliff is not far from where I live. You might not even notice it in the surrounding trees; however, this is what makes Cliff worth visiting. I love this place because of its qualitative coffee and meals, beautiful location, and service. They serve specialty coffee, which made me their regular customer. Its taste is a perfect mix of bitterness, chocolate flavor, and a bit of sour aftertaste. I am a big coffee lover, so this café impressed me. Cliff also offers twenty different deserts that are an excellent match to a cup of coffee. Some of them are vegan options; that is why anyone can choose a treat for themselves. You can also order a sandwich or a salad here, and the food is always fresh. Their approach to nature deserves respect. The café’s outside area looks like a small park with tiny chairs, tables, and benches. If you ask for a blanket or bring your own, you can enjoy your meal sitting on the lawn in a comfortable position. Cliff is a ten-minute walk from my apartment, so I often go there to study surrounded by these beautiful trees. The interior combines brown and grey colors; most of the objects are made of concrete and wood. The waiters and baristas are cheerful and always ready for a small chat. They help me with my choice and complete the orders fast. Cliff also has quite a fast Internet connection. That is the reason why I regularly see at least ten freelancers working there constantly. The music that plays there is not too loud, but you can still hear it from any spot. Cliff looks clean and neat, that is why I enjoy every minute I spend there. There are many good coffee shops in the area, and this one is worth your attention. Try this place if you enjoy nature, polite service, and a peaceful atmosphere. Choose your favorite coffee drink and a small dessert to dine in the garden.
I don’t visit restaurants so often because my father is a chef. He has been in the culinary sphere for more than 20 years, working in an Italian restaurant. I prefer eating at home to eat as delicious food as in restaurants, hone my culinary skills, and spend more time with my family. Every meal my father cooks at home is a product of his professional approach and good taste. He even creates his dishes and invites us to try them. He changes recipes, experiments with flavors and seasonings, and describes everything he did while we were testing the dish. I feel like a famous food critic each time I try to guess the ingredients and the way of cooking. The next thing I love about eating at home is cooking. I enjoy spending time in the kitchen, even though I know I will not do it professionally one day. My dream is to become a software engineer, but good cooking skills are always a benefit. Having such a teacher as my father, I am sure my culinary skills become better each time. We buy groceries, cook, eat, and clean up together. It is like a small ritual that became a tradition in our family. That is far more than just visiting a restaurant to me. We don’t wear fancy clothes, stand in a queue or make reservations, and spend as much time as we want together. We find it more convenient since we have fun and don’t have to go anywhere. Eating at home can be a better experience than eating in a restaurant if you enjoy cooking. There are so many things to explore. Well, restaurant, when I’m tired from my stress and work that time first thing comes in my mind it is food. In that situation, I prefer to eat food outside as well as, I’m a very foody person and I always think about parties , weddings, and outing. But, here I would like to talk about my favorite restaurant which is in peak position in my list.

It is big ben and, i is located in the center of my city as well as, it is also near to my workplace. It is a three-floor restaurant and the sitting arrangement is extraordinary. There are a number of paintings hang on the walls like paintings of flowers, couple, Sanjeev Kapoor, fruit shakes, ice creams, fast food and so on.

The most important thing, this restaurant is neat and clean as well, all staff members are very co-operative with the customers. With it, they are serving a lot of varieties of food such as South Indian, Chinese, Italian and traditional food also.

Moreover, Big Ben also famous for different sorts of sweets even, when we celebrate any type of happy event and birthday party then, we but cake from here. They also make the cake on the order and, customers choice as well, taste also.

Hopefully, I always prefer to come here with friends and family because there we do not face the parking problem as compared to other restaurants. It is my favorite restaurant the main reason is I like to eat Italian food and, it is the only restaurant which cooks it in the proper way and tastes also as well as, I always suggest this to my relatives and friends because, this restaurant also provides mini hall, family hall and party hall service  there with it, there is room service also available. Home  »  IELTS general writing task 1: letter samples, phrases and tips.  »  Write a letter to your favourite restaurant.

Write a letter to your favourite restaurant. Include the following: - Your reason for writing - What you like about the restaurant - Suggestions for improvement

Dear Mr. Robertson,

I recently ate at your restaurant, ‘Famously Grilled,’ and I would just like to write to express my gratitude for operating such a great establishment. I have eaten at your restaurant many times and every meal I have had there has been truly delicious. I have tried many of your entrees, but my absolute favourite is the chicken parmigiana, please don’t ever change the recipe, it is incredible.

I love the decorations that you have inside your restaurant and I think the service is excellent. You do a great job of choosing people to run your restaurant.

I have one request- I am planning on throwing a surprise birthday for my wife and I’m wondering if it is possible to hold the party at your restaurant. Please let me know either by email or phone as to whether or not we can make this happen.

Sincerely, Samuel Potts

The KGB’s Favorite Restaurant Reopens in Moscow

Aragvi, the haunt of Soviet-era celebrities and spies opens after a 13-year absence and $20 million renovation

Jason Daley

Correspondent

Aragvi Interior

Anyone who stepped into Aragvi during the second half of the 20th century was likely to spot a Eastern bloc movie star, chess champion, cosmonaut or a politburo member. For decades, the restaurant at No. 6/2 Tverskaya Ulitsa in Moscow was the place to be seen for the cream of Soviet society and was a favorite haunt of spies and KGB agents. After the fall of the USSR, however, the restaurant fell on hard times and closed. Now, after almost 15 years, the Georgian restaurant has reopened its doors, hoping its Soviet-era cachet will bring it back to the culinary hip list.

Mary Louise Kelly at NPR reports that the restaurant, opened in 1938, was a favorite with Stalin’s chief of secret police, Lavrentiy Beria, who stopped in often with Stalin’s son Vasily for the Georgian wine. It’s even rumored that Beria designed the state-owned restaurant.

Veteran KGB spy Yury Kobaladze tells Kelly that the restaurant was also a favorite haunt of Kim Philby , a British agent secretly working for the Soviets who served as the liaison between MI6 and the CIA. He defected to the USSR in 1963 after being outed as a double agent. “He liked Georgian food,” Kobaladze says. “That's what he told me. He loved Aragvi.”

Many other people also loved Aragvi since, according to Ilya Krol at The Moscow Times , it was the only place in the city to get Georgian cuisine. “You can't compare today’s dining scene in Moscow with the Soviet one,” poet Lev Rubinshtein, who frequented Aragvi in the 1970s tells Krol. “How many places could you get food from the Caucasus in the capital? Just a few places serving shashlik (grilled meat). Aragvi, with its 12-page menu, had no rival.”

Sergei Solovyov , a director known for  Assa and  Anna Karenina also witnessed the Soviet-era decadence. “I was really shocked when I saw the dishes that you could order there,” he tells Krol. “I can see it as if it were yesterday. They brought our order of lobio, satsivi, shashlik, chicken livers, and caviar to the table … but I was so hungry that I fainted before the waiter brought our plates.”

According to Marina Lapenkova at Agence France-Presse , the formerly state-run restaurant changed hands several times after the fall of the Soviet Union, eventually closing for good in 2003. But the Tashir group and investor Gor Nakhapetyan have spent nearly 15 years and $20 million to restore the nine-room restaurant. The main dining rooms are painted with Soviet murals depicting tractors, workers and sheaves of corn, but otherwise the space does not resemble the previous incarnation.

Head chef Alexei Zenin tells Krol that the menu focuses on authentic versions of Black Sea cuisine, like the dumpling khinkali and the chopped salad  pkhali . Unlike the first time around, the restaurant faces stiff competition. Cheap Georgian food has become very popular in Moscow. That’s why the owners hope to capitalize on the restaurant’s unique history.

But recreating the Cold War ambience exactly would be difficult. Mikhail Lyubimov, a former KGB agent who headed operations against Britain and Scandinavian says most of the staff at the restaurant were retired KGB officers and the restaurant was a great recruiting ground for spies. It was also the spot where agents held farewell parties for colleagues going abroad. He tells Lapenkova he remembers a night “with plenty of drinking, [when] one of our men invited a beautiful woman to dance, not realizing she herself was a US spy and was being tailed by the KGB.”

To get the mood just right, the restaurant would have to bring back the surveillance too. “Everything was bugged, you know?” Kobaladze tells Kelly. “But everybody knew that if you were in Aragvi: don’t talk, keep quiet. The rumor was that all [the] tables had microphones.”

As Ukraine Rebuilds Its Identity, Folk Songs Are the New Cool

Faced with Russia’s efforts to erase Ukrainian culture, people have embraced traditional music as a way to reconnect with their past and affirm their identity.

At first sight, it looked like a typical party in a nightclub. It was mid-March in central Kyiv and a hundred or so people were wiggling on the dance floor of V’YAVA, one of the Ukrainian capital’s most popular live music venues. The hall was dark, lit only by bright blue and red spotlights. Bartenders were busy pouring gin and tonics.

But the lineup that night, in a concert hall that typically hosts pop artists and rappers, was unexpected: four Ukrainian folk singers, filling the room with their high-pitched voices and polyphonic choruses, accompanied by a D.J. spinning techno beats — all to a cheering crowd.

These days, Ukrainian folk music “is becoming something cool,” said Stepan Andrushchenko, one of the singers from Shchuka Ryba , the band onstage that night. “A very cool thing.”

More than two years into Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, folk music is enjoying a surge of popularity in the war-torn nation. Faced with Moscow’s efforts to erase Ukrainian culture , people have embraced traditional songs as a way to reconnect with their past and affirm their identity.

“It’s like a defensive measure,” said Viktor Perfetsky, 22, who started traditional singing classes after the war broke out. “If we don’t know who we are, the Russians will come and force us to be what they want us to be.”

That is a stark change of attitude in Ukraine, where folk songs had long been dismissed as archaic relics of peasant culture. Today, those same songs are being played at open-air festivals and in trendy bars. Classes in “white voice” singing, a traditional Ukrainian vocal style akin to controlled yelling, are selling out, and youngsters practice traditional dances in the streets of Kyiv, with cans of beer in their hands.

Bands like Shchuka Ryba are building on that trend to bring folk songs into the 21st century. They have collaborated with D.J.s and jazz bands to give the music a modern twist, adding electronic overtones and guitar melodies. Their ultimate goal: to reshape Ukraine’s identity around its rich but long-ignored past.

“It shouldn’t be a passing trend,” Yarina Sizyk, 27, a Shchuka Ryba singer with a distinctive, strident voice, said in a recent interview. “It should be part of everyday life.”

Folk music has been hummed in Ukraine for centuries, but they were long stereotyped as backward. In Soviet times, some folk songs were taught in schools, performed by ensembles and generally used for propaganda, but the authorities ended up turning them into a poor imitation of folk peasant culture, experts say.

Standing outside, a man in military fatigues plays a recorder with a woman in a peasant outfit next to him, behind a microphone on a stand.

After Ukraine gained independence in 1991, some groups traveled across the country to try and salvage that heritage. Kateryna Kapra, a co-founder of the cultural organization Rys, said she toured villages in central and eastern Ukraine in the mid-2010s to record and preserve authentic folk songs.

But back in Kyiv, Kapra struggled to elicit interest from urban residents. She recalled trying to organize workshops to teach traditional carols: “It was so difficult to find just 10 people in such a big city.”

Many Ukrainians were skeptical of folk music, fearing that it played into “Kremlin stereotypes about how Ukrainians are just singing peasants,” said Maria Sonevytsky, a Ukrainian American ethnomusicologist and the author of “ Wild Music: Sound and Sovereignty in Ukraine .”

All that changed after Russia invaded on Feb. 24, 2022. As Moscow targeted Ukraine’s cultural heritage, including by bombing and looting museums, the songs became a marker of the Ukrainian identity.

“People realized that it’s more important than ever to preserve this culture, because it could be destroyed at any moment,” said Andrii Solomiichuk, 33, who was listening to a folk music performance in the gardens of Kyiv’s Cathedral of Saint Sophia on a recent Sunday afternoon.

Video player loading

Around him, small groups of folk singers dressed in traditional embroidered shirts were seated on the grass, rehearsing as they readied to take the stage. Many in the audience said they had started to listen to folk music only after the war began, drawn by a desire to reclaim their roots. “Traditions are the foundation, the lifeblood of the nation,” said Iryna Bilonizhka, 34.

As the war drags on, singing classes run by Rys have filled up. Kapra said tickets for a summer school last year “sold out in a day.”

At a recent class in Kyiv, six men stood in a semicircle and puffed out their chests as they ran through some vocal exercises. “Ta-te-ti-to-tu-to-ti-te-ta,” they sang, rising a note with each repetition and filling the room with their deep voices.

It felt like an oasis of peace in the middle of the war-battered city, but signs of the fighting were not far away. One student had a prosthetic leg — it was amputated after stepping on a mine at the front last year — while another wore a T-shirt evoking Ukrainian airstrikes on Russian targets.

Stanislav Ivko, the student who lost his leg, said he enjoyed learning about Ukraine’s history through the songs. One of his favorite ballads, “ Hey, I Had a Horse ,” recounts the hardships of the Cossacks, horsemen who once ruled over Ukraine’s southern regions, and their longing for better times.

Sonevytsky, the ethnomusicologist, said the songs were “a way of showing a kind of historical presence” for Ukraine and a means of countering the Kremlin’s claim that Ukraine’s nationhood is a fiction by recovering “something that was lost during the Soviet period.”

That return to the roots, however, doesn’t preclude a modern touch.

Video player loading

After the war began, the band Shchuka Ryba started collaborating with Fusion Jams , a Kyiv-based community of musicians, to blend traditional tunes with elements of more mainstream music like jazz, rock and electro. Their goal was spreading folk songs as widely as possible.

“We’re trying to make them accessible to a young audience,” Sizyk said on a recent afternoon. “It’s not just for grandmas and grandpas.”

She and other Shchuka Ryba members had just finished rehearsing their most popular track, “ Oh, My Father Had a Daughter ,” with a bassist, drummer and pianist in a studio in central Kyiv. The track is based on a folk song recorded several years ago among villagers in central Ukraine, to which the band added drums and synths.

Andrushchenko said the band wanted folk music to “become a part of someone’s life” so it has “a deeper sense than just trends.” Its members make a point, for example, of teaching spectators about traditional dances during their concerts — pausing the music to arrange them in rows and showing them the basics.

This has led to some unusual scenes in some of the Ukrainian capital’s trendiest venues. At the V’YAVA concert hall in mid-March, the band led the crowd into a kind of circle dance, with people holding hands as they spun around the room, as the bartenders looked on, surprised.

Perfetsky, who joined singing classes at the start of the war and now runs his own weekly singing sessions in a cafe, said Shchuka Ryba had inspired many to embrace folk music. “People now think, ‘Wow, they’re so cool,” he said. “And people are like, ‘I want to sing too!’”
