Your Team Members Aren’t Participating in Meetings. Here’s What to Do.

  • Luis Velasquez

business research pdf book

Ask yourself: What do people need to feel that their contributions are valued?

Traditional advice for leaders who want to increase meeting participation call for clarifying expectations, setting clear agendas, and asking open-ended questions. While these strategies have their merits, they might not always work because they’re usually based on the leader’s assumptions about what the team needs, rather than facts about what they actually need. Managers who want their teams to be more engaged in meetings need to foster a safe, inclusive team culture, which requires a deep understanding of their team’s unique dynamics. The author presents several strategies for encouraging employees to engage during meetings.

Sue, a former client of mine, was starting a new VP role at a fintech organization. She found out quickly that the team she inherited had a lower level of participation, collaboration, questioning, and general engagement than the one she had left behind. This was particularly evident in team meetings.

Identifying the Culprit: Assessing Eyewitness Identification

Identifying the Culprit

Assessing eyewitness identification.

Identifying the Culprit: Assessing Eyewitness Identification makes the case that better data collection and research on eyewitness identification, new law enforcement training protocols, standardized procedures for administering line-ups, and improvements in the handling of eyewitness identification in court can increase the chances that accurate identifications are made. This report explains the science that has emerged during the past 30 years on eyewitness identifications and identifies best practices in eyewitness procedures for the law enforcement community and in the presentation of eyewitness evidence in the courtroom. In order to continue the advancement of eyewitness identification research, the report recommends a focused research agenda.

What is a prepublication?

What is a prepublication image

An uncorrected copy, or prepublication, is an uncorrected proof of the book. We publish prepublications to facilitate timely access to the committee's findings.

What happens when I pre-order?

The final version of this book has not been published yet. You can pre-order a copy of the book and we will send it to you when it becomes available. We will not charge you for the book until it ships. Pricing for a pre-ordered book is estimated and subject to change. All backorders will be released at the final established price. As a courtesy, if the price increases by more than $3.00 we will notify you. If the price decreases, we will simply charge the lower price. Applicable discounts will be extended.

Downloading and Using eBooks from NAP

What is an ebook.

An ebook is one of two file formats that are intended to be used with e-reader devices and apps such as Amazon Kindle or Apple iBooks.

Why is an eBook better than a PDF?

A PDF is a digital representation of the print book, so while it can be loaded into most e-reader programs, it doesn't allow for resizable text or advanced, interactive functionality. The eBook is optimized for e-reader devices and apps, which means that it offers a much better digital reading experience than a PDF, including resizable text and interactive features (when available).

Where do I get eBook files?

eBook files are now available for a large number of reports on the NAP.edu website. If an eBook is available, you'll see the option to purchase it on the book page.

To examine the relationship between gestational glucose intolerance (GGI) and neonatal hypoglycemia.

This was a secondary analysis of 8,262 mother-infant dyads, with delivery at two hospitals between 2014 and 2023. We categorized maternal glycemic status as normal glucose tolerance (NGT), GGI, or gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). We defined NGT according to a normal glucose load test result, GGI according to an abnormal glucose load test result with zero (GGI-0) or one (GGI-1) abnormal value on the 100-g oral glucose tolerance test, and GDM according to an abnormal glucose load test result with two or more abnormal values on the glucose tolerance test. Neonatal hypoglycemia was defined according to blood glucose <45 mg/dL or ICD-9 or ICD-10 diagnosis of neonatal hypoglycemia. We used logistic regression analysis to determine associations between maternal glucose tolerance category and neonatal hypoglycemia and conducted a sensitivity analysis using Δ-adjusted multiple imputation, assuming for unscreened infants a rate of neonatal hypoglycemia as high as 33%.

Of infants, 12% had neonatal hypoglycemia. In adjusted models, infants born to mothers with GGI-0 had 1.28 (95% 1.12, 1.65), GGI-1 1.58 (95% CI 1.11, 2.25), and GDM 4.90 (95% CI 3.81, 6.29) times higher odds of neonatal hypoglycemia in comparison with infants born to mothers with NGT. Associations in sensitivity analyses were consistent with the primary analysis.

GGI is associated with increased risk of neonatal hypoglycemia. Future research should include examination of these associations in a cohort with more complete neonatal blood glucose ascertainment and determination of the clinical significance of these findings on long-term child health.

I've been on more than 30 cruises with my family. Here are my 6 tips for saving money on board.

  • As a budget-conscious, frequent cruiser I've found ways to save money while on these vacations.
  • My family packs smart, takes advantage of included entertainment, and avoids pricey upcharges.
  • We splurge on having fun in port but never book overpriced cruise-line shore excursions.

Insider Today

My family loves cruising , and we've found it's a fantastic way to explore different destinations while enjoying the amenities and entertainment offered on board.

And, after more than 30 cruises as a family, we've also found lots of ways to save money .

Here's how we make the most of our cruise budget and you can, too.

We pack smart and research everything we're allowed to bring on board.

business research pdf book

For my family, saving money on a cruise starts during the packing process.

I always ensure we pack essentials like sunscreen, toiletries, and medications to avoid having to purchase them on board at inflated prices. I also bring reusable water bottles to fill at onboard water stations to save on beverage costs.

Also, many cruise lines allow you to bring some beverages , such as a limited amount of beer or wine, water, sports drinks, and soda, in your carry-on luggage. It's important to research guidelines in advance, as bringing these drinks on board can also save you money.

Instead of specialty dining or expensive drink packages, we take advantage of the included food and beverage options.

business research pdf book

Today's cruises offer dining upcharges everywhere you look. From celebrity-chef-helmed restaurants to premium coffees, these extra food and beverage costs add up quickly.

With so many included dining and drink options on a cruise, my family prefers to skip these upgrades and only splurge on special occasions.

When it comes to cocktails, we avoid grossly overpriced drink packages and instead take advantage of "drink of the day" specials to save on our liquid refreshments.

Add-on experiences can add up quickly, so monitoring our onboard tab is essential.

business research pdf book

Dining is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to upcharges.

Things like bingo, arcades, spa services, and WiFi all come with an extra charge as well, and it's easy to rack up a hefty tab.

I'm always on high alert for which services will cost extra and we make a point to check our itemized bill regularly to ensure we don't blow our budget on non-essential experiences.

Complimentary onboard activities are a major reason we love cruising, so we take full advantage of these offerings.

business research pdf book

Before indulging in activities that cost an added fee, my family takes advantage of the ship's complimentary amenities, such as poolside entertainment, miniature golf, trivia contests, and live shows.

With cruises now including everything from zip lines, water slides, and carousels to rock climbing, ice skating, and laser tag, we often find that these activities are more than enough to keep us entertained without spending anything extra.

If there's an add-on I really want, like a massage, I try to book these on port days, as many cruise lines offer a discounted rate while the ship is docked.

Local vendors often offer cheaper shore excursions than those sold through the cruise line.

business research pdf book

If there's one thing I splurge on, it's experiences in the cruise ports of call. However, although shore excursions booked through the cruise line are convenient (the ship won't leave without you when you're on one), they're also pricey.

Local tour operators often offer similar experiences at lower prices, and booking these on your own can save you money.

For example, renting a car at a stop can also be a great option if a rental-car facility is near the port.

While on a cruise in Iceland, my family rented a car in Akureyri. It was hundreds of dollars cheaper than going on a shore excursion, and we were able to customize our trip to see all the geothermal hot spots on our wish list.

Participating in cruise-line loyalty programs gets me onboard freebies and allows me to save even more in the future.

business research pdf book

There's a reason many travelers remain loyal to a particular cruise line . Just like airlines and hotel chains, cruise companies have reward programs that incentivize you to book with them in the future.

My family frequently sails with Disney Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean, and we've earned perks such as free and discounted beverages, onboard gifts, priority boarding, and more.

These small incentives add up. Plus, most cruise lines offer a discount on future cruise bookings when they're made onboard your current sailing. This is a great way to save money on future cruises and it keeps us looking forward to our next vacation!
