Another case of an actor's performance outshining their own film. In "Legend," Tom Hardy takes on the dual role of Kray twins, Ronnie and Reggie, as the film follows the rise and fall of the infamous gangsters.

13th (2016)

The 13th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution abolished slavery and involuntary servitude, but this searing documentary argues that both have only taken on different forms in the years since its adoption. The Emmy-winning work, directed by acclaimed filmmaker Ava DuVernay , traces the systematic oppression of Black Americans following the official end of slavery in 1865, from segregation to the disproportionate targeting of minorities during the war on drugs to the prison-industrial complex, of which private contractors have benefited financially. DuVernay tackles varied and complicated forms of corruption here, but 13th is carefully plotted to show how each act of disenfranchisement leads to another, serving as a riveting rallying cry. — Kevin Jacobsen

As its domestic workers are tasked with more intensive labor for lower pay, their Chinese employers experience culture shock while adjusting to the American way of life. Told with matter-of-fact honesty, American Factory drew rave reviews that included EW's critic, who notes , "The heart and soul of American Factory , like all American factories, is never really politics of course; it's people." — K.J.

Bolstered by critical acclaim and celebrity patrons, Melngailis’ stock was rising in the raw food world — until her restaurant empire was brought down by a marriage to a con man. A scandalous story told over four episodes, Bad Vegan: Fame. Fraud. Fugitives is the only documentary to include true crime intrigue, vegans on the run, and a Dominos order gone terribly wrong. If you’ve ever wanted to see a story in which canine immortality and meat suits feature prominently, run — don’t walk — to your TV and fill up on the insanity that is the story of Bad Vegan. —Ilana Gordon

Crip Camp (2020)

Following the success of American Factory , Higher Ground released this Oscar-nominated documentary about a New York summer camp called Camp Jened, which served as a haven for people with disabilities. Featuring footage of co-director James LeBrecht's experiences there in the early 1970s, the film demonstrates how the campers went on to fight in the disability rights movement of the late-20th century. Balancing warmth with the urgency of its message, Crip Camp gives a more three-dimensional view of this marginalized community than most films, emphasizing the power of advocating for one's rights. As EW's critic writes , "Like most good storytelling, it takes care to make the political personal." — K.J.

Dick Johnson Is Dead (2020)

Life and death are inexorably linked in this unique film by celebrated documentary cinematographer Kirsten Johnson ( Cameraperson ). As her father lives with dementia, Johnson stages various fictional scenarios in which he accidentally dies — from tripping down the stairs to getting hit by a falling air conditioner — which he charmingly acts out for the camera. What may sound morbid in writing is actually a bittersweet meditation on the stigma surrounding death and a daughter's special way of bonding with her dad before it's too late. Come for the absurdly planned schemes, stay for, as EW's critic observes , "the immeasurable love between [the film's] maker and its muse." — K.J.

Disclosure (2020)

From problematic movies such as The Crying Game and Ace Ventura: Pet Detective to groundbreaking shows like Orange Is the New Black and Pose , Disclosure deftly tracks the evolution of trans acceptance and how far we still have to go. While the footage often speaks for itself, the value of this documentary comes from real-life actors and artists discussing how those cultural depictions shaped not only the societal perception of trans people but also how they view themselves. — K.J.

Downfall: The Case Against Boeing (2022)

Boeing used to be the pride of American manufacturing, but now the company’s name is synonymous with safety failures. Downfall: The Case Against Boeing goes deep into how pressure from Wall Street corrupted the company’s safety culture, ultimately leading to two crashes of Boeing MAX 737 planes in October of 2018 and March of 2019. Boeing refused to be involved in the making of the film, but the project does an excellent job of breaking down how desire to keep the company’s stock price high led Boeing to knowingly fail pilots and passengers. —I.G.

The effects of China's one-child policy are explored through the stories of three adopted American teenage girls in this rousing documentary. Taylor Swift ’s Eras Tour inspired one of the biggest pop culture conversations of 2023, but even as Swift proved over and over why she’s one of the best in the business, it’s worth traveling back in time a few years to a period when her reputation was on the line and much less respect was afforded to her work. Rolling Thunder Revue (2019)

Martin Scorsese blurs the line between fiction and reality in this glimpse into Bob Dylan 's eponymous 1975 tour. The director blends archival footage with modern interviews from those who were in the singer's circle, including Joan Baez and Sam Shepard , as well as from fictional characters, played by the likes of Sharon Stone and Michael Murphy. This fluid style pays tribute to Dylan's 1978 film Renaldo and Clara , which also combines documentary footage and fictional vignettes. Dark Waters (2019)

Dark waters.

Director Todd Haynes

Release Date November 22, 2019

Cast Kevin Crowley, Daniel R. Hill, Denise Dal Vera, Bill Pullman, Mark Ruffalo, Victor Garber, Anne Hathaway, William Jackson Harper, Louisa Krause, Bill Camp, Tim Robbins, Mare Winningham

Runtime 126 minutes

Mark Ruffalo and Anne Hathaway are both cinematic powerhouses when it comes to gripping dramas, and bringing them together under the directorship of Todd Haynes in the 2019 legal thriller Dark Water made the movie a recipe for success both at the box office and on Netflix. Dark Waters is a semi-fictionalized retelling of the infamous 1990s legal case where lawyer Robert Bilott (played by Ruffalo) took chemical manufacturer DuPont to court for damages to the local environment of his grandmother's town of Parkersburg, West Virginia.

As the drama unfolds, the case gets messier and messier, with suspected unregulated chemicals being used that led to the deaths of both natural wildlife and the livestock the residents of the town depend on for their livelihood. While it didn't win many, Dark Waters was nominated for multiple awards, and was successful in securing the Environmental Media Award for Best Feature Film in 2020.

Leave The World Behind (2023)

Leave the world behind.

Release Date December 8, 2023

Director Sam Esmail

Cast Myha'la, Mahershala Ali, Ethan Hawke, Julia Roberts, Kevin Bacon

Runtime 141 Minutes

Between her work in Homecoming and Gaslight , Julia Roberts is proving herself just as adept at taking on dark, dramatic subject matter as she is with feel-good rom-coms, and Leave the World Behind is another prime example. In the film, she plays Amanda Sandford, a wife and mother who takes her family on a spontaneous Long Island vacation. However, things go awry when none of their technology devices work, and a father and daughter show up at the vacation house claiming they live there.

As Amanda gets closer to the father, G. H. (Mahershala Ali), she discovers that all these strange occurrences may be the result of a government conspiracy. Leave the World Behind is written and directed by Mr. Robot creator Sam Esmail, who also produced Homecoming and Gaslit , and the movie proves to be another winning collaboration with Roberts. Like these other works, Leave the World Behind is a slow burn, which may not appeal to everybody. But Esmail knows how to turn up the dread and menace of technology on society, making Leave the World Behind more than worth the watch.

The Power Of The Dog (2021)

The power of the dog.

Release Date November 17, 2021

Director Jane Campion

Genres Drama, Western

The 2020s have seen a cultural shift as society examines traditional values alongside new ones, particularly within art, and the Western movie genre is no exception. From acclaimed director Jane Campion, The Power of the Dog is the definitive revisionist Western . Based on the 1967 novel of the same name by Thomas Savage, the film stars Benedict Cumberbatch as Phil Burbank, a charming yet cruel rancher who uses toxic masculinity to torment those around him and repress his true desires.

The Power of the Dog landed on a staggering number of 10 best movie lists and its awards nominations were also numerous. Along with Cumberbatch, actors Kirsten Dunst, Jesse Plemons, and Kodi Smit-McPhee were all nominated for Oscars for their roles. Campion took home the Best Director statuette, becoming the first woman to win two Academy Awards in that category (her first was for The Piano ). With its expert direction, stellar performances, and thought-provoking themes, The Power of the Dog is one of the best movies on Netflix.

All Quiet On The Western Front (2022)

All quiet on the western front.

Release Date October 28, 2022

Director Edward Berger

Cast Albrecht Schuch, Felix Kammerer, Daniel Brhl

Runtime 150 minutes

Deservedly handed a Best Picture nomination at the Oscars, Netflix's 2022 adaptation of Erich Maria Remarque's classic novel All Quiet on the Western Front is a remarkable, stark meditation on the reality of war. Telling the story of World War I from the German perspective — typically not the side of the trenches cinema's light shines on — it is the first adaptation to be told in the original German.

It is an important movie, showing the harrowing experience of young soldiers thrown into battlefields, but it is also thoroughly entertaining thanks to its moving central performances. Even with the military genre potentially limiting wider audience interest, All Quiet on the Western Front is a genuine must-see for Netflix subscribers.

Marriage Story (2019)

Marriage story.

Release Date December 6, 2019

Director Noah Baumbach

Cast Kyle Bornheimer, Ray Liotta, Merritt Wever, Adam Driver, Laura Dern, Mark O'Brien, Mickey Sumner, Julie Hagerty, Scarlett Johansson, Alan Alda

Runtime 136 minutes

In a close-run race, Marriage Story is the best Noah Baumbach movie , which hits all of his hallmarks as a filmmaker and is an incredible advert for the craft of directing. Even beyond those achievements, which matter less to Netflix viewers than the simple question of quality, Marriage Story is an incredible, must-watch movie that is easily one of the best movies on Netflix.

Starring Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson in twin career-best performances, Marriage Story is horribly compelling, showing the harrowing story of a couple whose initially amicable separation becomes a bitter divorce . It's like watching a world crumble in slow motion, with Driver and Johansson's on-screen son the tragic middle ground of a battle that is propelled almost accidentally towards catastrophe. And while it's very, very sad, Marriage Story 's overall message about failure and future is a very important one.

Marriage Story was nominated for multiple Academy Awards, with Laura Dern winning Best Supporting Actress in 2020 for her role in the movie (in addition to a Golden Globe).

May December (2023)

May december.

Release Date December 1, 2023

Cast Julianne Moore, Natalie Portman, Charles Melton

Runtime 113 Minutes

Genres Drama, Romance

Natalie Portman and Julianne Moore are two of today's most respected actors, and the Oscar winners co-star in May December , directed by Todd Haynes. Loosely inspired by the Mary Kay Letourneau scandal, the film sees actress Elizabeth Berry (Portman) cast in a film to play the controversial public figure, Gracie Atherton-Yoo (Moore), who years earlier was caught having sex with her son's 13-year-old schoolmate, Joe Yoo. 23 years later, Gracie and Joe (Charles Melton) are married, and Elizabeth travels to Georgia to meet them and prepare for her role.

While it's no surprise that Portman and Moore are stellar as their characters, Melton all but steals the show. The Riverdale actor has been picking up awards steam, with Melton winning the Gotham Independent Film Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor . This taut three-hander movie is thought-provoking and uncomfortable, raising serious questions about age differences in romantic relationships. But for such weighty subject matter, May December also has moments of humor and levity.

May on Netflix is packed with new TV shows and movies including Archer, Bridgerton season 3, and Atlas.

The Gentlemen (2019)

The gentlemen.

Director Guy Ritchie

Release Date January 24, 2020

Cast Matthew McConaughey, Colin Farrell, Charlie Hunnam, Hugh Grant, Henry Golding, Jeremy Strong, Michelle Dockery

Runtime 113 minutes

Guy Ritchie is hard to beat when it comes to British gangster movies, and in 2024 he teamed up with Netflix for The Gentlemen TV show. The show is as hilarious as it is action-filled, as is the 2019 movie it's based on — also called The Gentlemen — which is also currently available to stream on Netflix. The Gentlemen features an all-star cast that includes Matthew McConaughey, Colin Farrell, Hugh Grant, and Charlie Hunnam. Much like the show, The Gentlemen movie features all the trappings of classic Guy Ritchie movies like Snatch and Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels.

Like many Guy Ritchie movies, The Gentlemen features many interlocked threads, but mainly revolves around Mickey Pearson (McConaughey), an American Cannabis magnate operating illegally in the UK.

Like many Guy Ritchie movies, The Gentlemen features many interlocked threads, but mainly revolves around Mickey Pearson (McConaughey), an American Cannabis magnate operating illegally in the UK. This narrative is framed by conversations between adept gang fixer Raymond (Hunnam) and investigative reporter Fletcher (Hugh Grant), who are both involved in the story but also explain many of the events through hilarious voice-overs (especially in Hugh Grant's case).

Lift (2024)

Release Date January 12, 2024

Director F. Gary Gray

Cast rsula Corber, Kevin Hart, Vincent D'Onofrio, Jacob Batalon, Sam Worthington, Billy Magnussen, Jean Reno, Gugu Mbatha-Raw

Writers Emerald Fennell, Simon Kinberg, Daniel Kunka

Netflix kicked off 2024 on a strong note when heist comedy Lift arrived in January. The movie was originally due to arrive in August 2023, but was pushed back due to the then-ongoing 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike. The movie doesn't reinvent the wheel, and doesn't seek to, being a solid entry into the ever-popular genre of comedies focusing on professional criminals. Subscribers seeking an easy watch guaranteed to prompt a laugh or two definitely won't be disappointed.

Lift stars Kevin Hart as Cyrus , a known thief, and follows him and his crew as they become embroiled in a roller-coaster of events that start when they kidnap an NFT artist. Kevin Hart is joined in the Lift cast by Vincent D'Onofrio, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Sam Worthington, and several more in a solid ensemble cast.

Dolemite Is My Name (2019)

Dolemite is my name.

Release Date October 25, 2019

Director Chelsea Gilson

Cast Chelsea Gilson, London Worthy, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Wesley Snipes, T.I., Eddie Murphy, Chris Rock, Tituss Burgess, Mike Epps, Keegan-Michael Key, Craig Robinson

Runtime 118 minutes

Genres Biography, Drama, Comedy

Eddie Murphy largely stepped out of the public eye in the 2010s, but he made a resounding, kick-the-door-down comeback with Dolemite Is My Name . In the Netflix comedy biopic, Murphy plays Rudy Ray Moore, a performer who adopts the persona of Dolemite, a foul-mouthed showman who dresses like a stereotypical pimp. Moore looks to break into blaxploitation films as Dolemite, but he's told he doesn't fit the toned physique of the industry standard. Not one to be deterred, Moore seeks to produce and star in his own movie, and he rounds up a crew of friends and misfits to help.

While Dolemite Is My Name is possibly Murphy's best movie , and he was absolutely robbed of an Oscar nomination, it's Da'Vine Joy Randolph who steals the show as Lady Reed, a charming woman whom Moore convinces to tour with him and eventually star in his movie . Now gaining much-deserved attention and acclaim for her work in Only Murders in the Building and The Holdovers , this is Randolph's breakout role. A charming underdog story with an even more charming cast, Dolemite Is My Name is one of the best movies on Netflix.

All 39 Movies & TV Shows Leaving Netflix This Month

Cast Elissa Cadwell, Max Huang, Daniel Nelson, Sisi Stringer, Matilda Kimber, Laura Brent, Chin Han, Mehcad Brooks, Ludi Lin, Hiroyuki Sanada, Tadanobu Asano, Lewis Tan, Jessica McNamee, Josh Lawson, Joe Taslim

Runtime 110 minutes

With shows like The Last Of Us and Fallout alongside movies like Five Nights At Freddys and The Super Mario Bros, it's safe to say that video game adaptations are taking the world by storm. This isn't a new trend though, and in 2021 one of the first successful modern video game movies arrived — Mortal Kombat. Netflix subscribers seeking gory fight-filled action that's rife with impressive special effects will find Mortal Kombat more than satisified, as the movie is just as bombastic yet gripping as the game series it's based on.

The premise of Mortal Kombat is relatively straightforward. Earth is one of several realms that exist within the universe, and the fragile peace between Earth and neighboring realm Outworld is maintained by a regular fighting tournament. The movie focuses on the champions of Earth as they're found, trained, and then entered into the fray, fighting for their lives against the champions of Outworld to secure the safety of the mortal world.

Kill Bill Volumes 1 & 2 (2003 & 2004)

Director Quentin Tarantino

Release Date October 10, 2003

Cast Lucy Liu, Uma Thurman, Michael Madsen, David Carradine, Vivica A. Fox, Daryl Hannah

Quentin Tarantino is one of the most celebrated (and controversial) directors in modern cinema, and one of his most visually striking movies to date is the two-part kung-fu inspired action epic Kill Bill. Starring Uma Thurman as The Bride, Kill Bill is a revenge story with levels of violence few films can match. After being betrayed on her wedding day by her boss, the titular Bill (David Carradine) and fellow assassins, The Bride spends multiple years in a coma thanks to being shot in the head.

When she awakens she has one thought on her mind — eliminating those that wronged her. Tarantino was on top form as a director when making both halves of the Kill Bill duology, and to say that it's filled from start to finish with unforgettable scenes and imagery is an understatement. Uma Thurman is joined in the Kill Bill cast by the likes of Lucy Liu, Michael Madsen, and Daryl Hannah, with every name on the roster portraying a unique character that Netflix subscribers won't soon forget.

Enola Holmes (2020)

Enola holmes.

Release Date September 23, 2020

Director Harry Bradbeer

Cast Susie Wokoma, Millie Bobby Brown, Louis Partridge, Fiona Shaw, Henry Cavill, Sam Claflin, Helena Bonham Carter, Burn Gorman, Adeel Akhtar

Runtime 123 minutes

Millie Bobby Brown became an A-list celebrity thanks to her breakout role as Eleven in Netflix's Stranger Things , so it's only fitting that her biggest and best movie role is also on the streaming platform. In Enola Holmes , Brown plays the eponymous heroine, the youngest sibling in a family that contains renowned detective, Sherlock Holmes. When their mother goes missing, Enola sets out to find her, and may just prove that Sherlock isn't the smartest Holmes after all.

Between movies like Glass Onion and Enola Holmes , Netflix is breathing new life into the murder mystery genre. Brown was casting genius, as films of this genre hinge on how much the audience roots for the detective at the center. The movie proved so successful that a 2022 sequel followed, and Enola Holmes 3 is in the works, proving that Netflix audiences can't get enough of the teenage detective.

Damsel (2024)

Director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo

Release Date March 8, 2024

Writers Dan Mazeau

Cast Brooke Carter, Robin Wright, Millie Bobby Brown, Shohreh Aghdashloo, Ray Winstone, Nick Robinson, Angela Bassett

Millie Bobby Brown has starred in many high-profile Netflix projects, such as Stranger Things and Enola Holmes, and 2024 saw her partnering with the streamer for the dark action-fantasy movie Damsel. The plot sees Brown's Elodie marrying Prince Henry, whom she initially isn't interested in, but goes along with the wedding for the good of the people of her own kingdom. However, Henry soon betrays her, throwing her into a chasm which brings her face-to-face with a terrifying dragon.

Of course, this simple set-up isn't all it seems, and it's here that the thematic depth of Damsel truly takes shape. The story is one of self-empowerment, and Elodie quickly learns that, just like Henry, the dragon which has besieged the kingdom over centuries has its own motives, though — unlike Henry — isn't the threat many believe it to be.

The Killer (2023)

Release Date November 10, 2023

Director David Fincher

Cast Lacey Dover, Kerry O'Malley, Monique Ganderton, Sala Baker, Tilda Swinton, Michael Fassbender, Charles Parnell

Runtime 118 Minutes

Genres Action, Crime, Adventure

David Fincher is a magnet for actors looking to tap into the dark side of their characters, and Michael Fassbender's titular anti-hero in The Killer is going to go down as one of his most memorable characters , which is saying a lot considering Fincher has given audiences Tyler Durden and the English-language version of Lisbeth Salander. Like The Narrator in Fight Club and Nick and Amy Dunne in Gone Girl , The Killer has the protagonist speak to the audience in voice-over, giving them a window into his twisted mind.

Based on the French graphic novel of the same name by Alexis "Matz" Nolent and Luc Jacamon, The Killer centers on the nameless assassin (Fassbender) who deals with the massive fallout after a job goes wrong. With as much substance as it has style, The Killer is yet another win for Fincher, whose sterling filmography is one of the most impressive of any working director today. The Killer will go down as one of Fassbender's greatest characters, and with any luck, he and Fincher will become frequent collaborators.

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery (2022)

Glass onion: a knives out mystery.

Release Date December 23, 2022

Director Rian Johnson

Cast Madelyn Cline, Kate Hudson, Edward Norton, Ethan Hawke, Dave Bautista, Daniel Craig, Janelle Monae, Leslie Odom Jr., Kathryn Hahn, Jessica Henwick

Runtime 139 minutes

The 2020s are a great time to be a fan of big movie sleuths, with Kenneth Branagh's Poirot carving out his own surprise shared universe and Daniel Craig's Benoit Blanc standing just on the other side of the parody line. Both detectives owe a lot of Agatha Christie, but Blanc is all the creation of Rian Johnson and Craig's performance, with is joyful. After Knives Out 's success, Netflix brought the sequel, Glass Onion , to the platform, proving that their expensive acquisition model can still include absolute gems.

Here, Blanc is back as he's invited to a billionaire's personal island (a thinly veiled nod to Elon Musk, played by Ed Norton), to play along with a murder mystery. Naturally, participants — and Glass Onion 's cast is another barn-stormer, like its predecessor — start dying for real, and Blanc is called into action. An Oscar nominee, Glass Onion is a great fix for anyone looking for a complex but rewarding mystery to get their teeth into.

Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse (2023)

Spider-man: across the spider-verse.

Release Date June 2, 2023

Director Justin K. Thompson, Kemp Powers, Joaquim Dos Santos

Cast Hailee Steinfeld, Oscar Isaac, Shameik Moore, Jake Johnson

Runtime 120 Minutes

Genres Superhero, Animation, Action, Adventure

The first movie in the series, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse , was revolutionary for its awe-inspiring animation, and became only the sixth non-Disney/Pixar movie to win Best Animated Feature at the Oscars. And the franchise might strike gold again with Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse . The film picks up with Miles Morales (Shameik Moore) who travels through the Multi-verse with Gwen Stacy (Hailee Steinfeld), where they happen upon an entire team of Spider-People . But things heat up when Miles and the Spider-People face a new threat and find themselves in conflict over how to defeat it.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is every bit as beloved as the first film, with its stellar animation and thrilling action scenes. Unlike so many cinematic franchises that release movies to increasingly diminishing returns, Miles Morales has many more adventures in him as Spider-Man, and no matter where he goes, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse will always be remembered as one of his best.

The Deepest Breath (2023)

The deepest breath.

Release Date July 19, 2023

Director Laura McGann

Cast Stephen Keenan, Alessia Zecchini

Runtime 108 Minutes

A stunning, provocative look at one of the world's most dangerous, barely fathomable sports, the documentary The Deepest Breath is a fascinating profile of free diver Alessia Zecchini. As well as exploring Zecchini's quest to set a world record in free-diving, the documentary chronicles her relationship with her safety diver partner, Stephen Keenan, as well as the personal toll and associated dangers with the sport. The Deepest Breath is the perfect pick for anyone looking for Netflix's best documentary .

The documentary culminates in Zecchini's attempt to free-dive Blue Hole’s arch, a notorious tunnel 56m down into a sinkhole, which previously took the lives of other divers, including Natalia Molchanova in 2015. The shocking tragedy that unfolds is as compelling as the portrait of the sportswoman herself and the sport is intriguing. It's a strangely intoxicating film, whose most important message is arguably the final message Zecchini was sent before her attempt to dive through the arch: “Live for today for you never know what’s coming down the line."

Harriet (2019)

Release Date November 1, 2019

Director Kasi Lemmons

Cast Antonio J. Bell, Deborah Ayorinde, Henry Hunter Hall, Tory Kittles, Vanessa Bell Calloway, Vondie Curtis-Hall, Jennifer Nettles, Cynthia Erivo, Zackary Momoh, Joe Alwyn, Omar Dorsey, Clarke Peters, Janelle Monae, Tim Guinee, Leslie Odom Jr.

Rating PG-13

Genres Biography, Drama, History

Tony Award-winning Cynthia Erivo has proven she is just as talented and magnetic on the screen as she is on stage, and Harriet is not only one of her best movies but one of the best on Netflix. In Harriet , she plays abolitionist and freedom fighter Harriet Tubman who escapes slavery and puts her life on the line to help others find freedom through the Underground Railroad.

Erivo was unsurprisingly nominated for a slew of awards for her portrayal of Tubman. In addition to receiving an Oscar nomination for her performance, she was also nominated for Best Original Song for "Stand Up". Harriet doesn't reinvent the biopic wheel, but it exquisitely captures the story of one of the most important historical figures in American history, and Erivo gives a winning performance.

Maestro (2023)

Release Date December 20, 2023

Director Bradley Cooper

Cast Sarah Silverman, Bradley Cooper, Carey Mulligan, Maya Hawke, Matt Bomer

Runtime 156 Minutes

Genres Biography, Drama, Music

Bradley Cooper may have first made a name for himself playing obnoxious jerks in comedies like Wedding Crashers and The Hangover , but he's now on his way to becoming one of Hollywood's most respected filmmakers. He had a splashy directorial debut in 2018 with A Star is Born , and he follows it up with another story about a musician, Maestro , a Leonard Bernstein biopic. Cooper plays Bernstein opposite Carey Mulligan as his wife, Felicia Montealegre. Maestro centers on the couple's tumultuous yet loving relationship as it weathers heartbreaking conflicts due to Bernstein's frequent affairs with men and his substance abuse.

While Hollywood was waiting with bated breath to see what Cooper would follow A Star is Born with, and he's the central figure as Bernstein, it's Mulligan who steals the show. She delivers a heart-wrenching performance, wholeheartedly capturing the trials and tribulations of being married to a successful artist, and is considered an early frontrunner in the 2024 Best Actress race at the Oscars. She and Cooper have layered, mature, and dazzling chemistry, and as a result, Maestro elevates the entire biopic genre.

Tick, Tick... Boom! (2021)

Tick, tick... boom.

Release Date November 12, 2021

Director Lin-Manuel Miranda

Cast Joshua Henry, Tariq Trotter, Alexandra Shipp, Andrew Garfield, Vanessa Hudgens, Bradley Whitford, Robin de Jess, Mj Rodriguez, Judith Light

Runtime 115 minutes

Hamilton 's Lin-Manuel Miranda is widely considered Broadway's latest visionary so it's only appropriate that his feature film directorial debut was about another legendary composer: Jonathan Larson, best known for writing the smash-hit musical Rent . Tick, Tick... Boom! follows Larson (Andrew Garfield) struggling to finish his musical Superbia before it's workshopped. Larson also puts increasing pressure on himself to become a successful composer before his looming 30th birthday.

Tick, Tick... Boom! wholeheartedly captures the misery, frustration, and doubt that struggling creatives face , yet they are powerless to resist the siren song of the arts. Andrew Garfield often brings an earnest passion to his roles, and this, along with his striking musical talent, makes him the perfect person to play Larson. Larson tragically passed away at the age of 35, before he saw Rent become a success, but his legacy lives on, and Lin-Manuel Miranda is the perfect person to tell his story.

Ma Rainey's Black Bottom (2020)

Ma rainey's black bottom.

Release Date December 18, 2020

Director George C. Wolfe

Cast Colman Domingo, Michael Potts, Glynn Turman, Chadwick Boseman, Viola Davis

Runtime 93 minutes

Genres Drama, Music

The movie that many agree should have won the late Chadwick Boseman a posthumous Oscar, Ma Rainey's Black Bottom is based on the August Wilson play of the same name and centers on possibly the most dramatic, eventful recording session ever seen on-screen. It takes place on a sweltering summer day in 1920s Chicago in which famous blues singer Ma Rainey (Viola Davis) and her band assemble at Paramount's Recording Studios to record an album, and tension rises faster than the blistering temperature.

One of the greatest, most important playwrights in American history, Wilson's works give an articulate, profound voice to the Black American experience , and Ma Rainey's Black Bottom is a shining example of this. While Boseman's life was tragically cut short, his performance as the charismatic yet hot-headed trumpeter Levee Green deserves to be just as iconic as superhero Black Panther.

The Matrix Resurrections (2021)

The matrix resurrections.

Director Lana Wachowski

Release Date December 22, 2021

Studio(s) Warner Bros. Pictures

Runtime 2h 28m

The Matrix trilogy was one of the most influential sci-fi franchises of the late '90s and early 2000s, with the story of Neo, Trinity, and the virtual world masquerading as reality becoming culturally definitive. The series' use of special effects — especially "bullet time" — also redefined action movies, with almost every single one released since taking some degree of inspiration from them. In 2021 the franchise returned with The Matrix 4, titled The Matrix Resurrections, which picks up the story 60 years after The Matrix Revolutions and adds additional layers to Neo and Trinity's tale.

While it was far from the success story of the first three Matrix movies, The Matrix Resurrections is a solid sci-fi movie that's guaranteed to entertain Netflix subscribers seeking a cerebral watch with some dazzling visuals. Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss both return as Neo and Trinity (despite their characters dying in the previous movie), and they're joined by the likes of Jonathan Groff, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, and Neil Patrick Harris.

Glass (2019)

Director M. Night Shyamalan

Release Date January 16, 2019

Cast Luke Kirby, Anya Taylor-Joy, Bruce Willis, Charlayne Woodard, Samuel L. Jackson, James McAvoy, Spencer Treat Clark, Sarah Paulson

Runtime 129 minutes

Helmed by M. Night Shyamalan and featuring the likes of Bruce Willis, James McAboy, Samuel L. Jackson, Sarah Paulson, and Anya Taylor-Joy in the cast, 2019's Glass is an instant recipe for a highly enjoyable action sci-fi movie. The third movie in Shyamalan's Unbreakable trilogy following Split, Glass brings McAvoy's Wendall Crumb, Willis's David Dunn, and Samuel L. Jackson's Elijah Price together for a showdown that exposes the existence of superpowered individuals to the world.

The entire movie builds a winding meta-narrative that feels incredibly apt in the 2020s when superhero movies still continue to dominate pop culture

Glass features plenty of mystery and intrigue, as well as some outstanding fight sequences and performances from the entire cast. Shyamalan's unique directorial style can be felt throughout, and the third film in the trilogy more than stands up as a sequel to both Unbreakable and Split. The entire movie builds a winding meta-narrative that feels incredibly apt in the 2020s when superhero movies still continue to dominate pop culture, and definitely isn't one to miss for Netflix subscribers.

They Cloned Tyrone (2023)

They cloned tyrone.

Release Date July 21, 2023

Director Juel Taylor

Cast J. Alphonse Nicholson, John Boyega, Kiefer Sutherland, Teyonah Parris, David Alan Grier, Jamie Foxx

Runtime 119 Minutes

Marrying high-concept science-fiction with fantasy, satire and all manner of other genres , The Cloned Tyrone is one of the best Netflix Original movies released in 2023. Set in a drab retro-futuristic world, it stars John Boyega as the titular drug dealer, who drags himself through the same cycle of everyday life, in a grim Groundhog Day-style mundane nightmare that not even being shot repeatedly seems to interrupt.

Delightfully twisty, and featuring a walking homage to Blaxpoitation movies in Jamie Foxx's pimp Slick Charles, They Cloned Tyrone is fast-paced, occasionally bizarre and a great way to spend a couple of hours. Come for the sci-fi, but stay for the Mary J Blige elevator scene.

Blended (2014)

Director Frank Coraci

Release Date May 23, 2014

Cast Drew Barrymore, Terry Crews, Kevin Nealon, Wendi McLendon-Covey, Adam Sandler

Runtime 117 Minutes

Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore have teamed up to make several romantic comedies, including cult classics in the genre like 50 First Dates and The Wedding Singer. In 2014, they reunited once more for Blended, a relatively by-the-numbers romantic comedy that utilizes their on-screen chemistry to deliver a satisfying viewing experience. While Blended doesn't reinvent the wheel, it does tick all the boxes fans of the duo expect, and it's unsurprising it's currently one of the most popular rom-coms on Netflix.

Blended is a second-love romance movie, with both Sandler and Barrymore playing single parents struggling to balance loneliness and dating with the struggles of raising children singlehandedly. After the pair have an awkward meet-cute at a pharmacy they go on a very unsuccessful date, only to later find themselves at the same family safari retreat in Africa. The cast also features Bella Thorne, Joel McHale, and Terry Crews, all of whom give hilarious performances.

To All The Boys I've Loved Before (2018)

To all the boys i've loved before.

Release Date August 17, 2018

Director Susan Johnson

Cast John Corbett, Lana Condor, Anna Cathcart, Janel Parrish, Israel Broussard, Noah Centineo

Runtime 102 minutes

Genres Romance, Comedy

In the age of streaming, romantic comedies are being given fewer and fewer theatrical runs, with many going straight to online platforms. While this is unfortunate for cinema-going fans of the genre, Netflix is a rom-com lover's paradise, as it boasts many original titles from Always Be My Maybe to The Kissing Booth , and To All the Boys I've Loved Before is one of the best. It sees the romantic yet shy teenage protagonist Lara Jean (Lana Condor) have her worst nightmare come true when the private love letters she wrote to her crushes go public.

Like many great teen movies, To All the Boys I've Loved Before is based on the book trilogy by Jenny Han, and the two follow-up novels also have Netflix adaptations. Genre stories that have a predominantly female audience, namely rom-com and young adult, are often dismissed, but it's impossible to ignore what a winning movie series To All the Boys is. Even though the film trilogy has wrapped, the franchise has launched a spin-off show called XO Kitty about Lara Jean's younger sister Kitty (Anna Cathcart), proving the enduring popularity of To All the Boys .

You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah (2023)

You are so not invited to my bat mitzvah.

Release Date August 25, 2023

Director Sammi Cohen

Cast Dylan Hoffman, Samantha Lorraine, Jackie Sandler, Adam Sandler, Idina Menzel

Runtime 103 Minutes

Adam Sandler tends to make the most at the box office when he's surrounded by those closest to him in real life (whether the critical reception of those movies matches or not). In Netflix Original You Are So Not Invited To My Bat Mitzvah he goes one step further, starring alongside his wife and daughters, with Sunny Sandler taking center stage. In fact, this is not his movie at all, though he does deliver a solid performance.

Culturally informed and sensitive, You Are So Not Invited To My Bat Mitzvah is a smart portrait of a landmark celebration, finding comedy and charm in its authenticity, but also in the universality of teenage life. Crucially, it understands and never talks down to the condition of adolescence, and the younger Sandler is the pick of You Are So Not Invited To My Bat Mitzvah's cast — a fledgling star who clearly learned a lot from the better comedies of her co-star father.

Shrek (2001)

Director Vicky Jenson, Andrew Adamson

Release Date May 18, 2001

Cast Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz, Eddie Murphy, John Lithgow

Runtime 90 minutes

While Disney was considered the undisputed and unrivaled source of all the best animated family movies throughout most of the 20th century, DreamWorks proved themselves as serious contenders for the title with 2001's Shrek, which now sits as one of the best family movies available on Netflix. Shrek stars Mike Myers as the titular ogre who, after his swamp is beset with refugee fairytale creatures, must go on a quest to rescue the incredibly capable (and not at all in need of rescue, really) Princess Fiona (Cameron Diaz).

He is joined along the way by his incredibly irritating but ever-loyal future best friend Donkey (Eddie Murphy), a talking Donkey. Shrek was such a success that it secured both multiple sequels and DreamWorks place as a houshold name among family-friendly studios. Shrek's plot and animation may have contributed to its success, but the key reason it became an instant hit was its humor. Shrek is laugh-out-loud hilarious in a way that few — if any — Disney movies have managed to match before or since, and it has more than stood the test of time despite the decades since its 2001 release.

The Mitchells Vs. The Machines (2021)

The mitchells vs. the machines.

Release Date April 30, 2021

Director Mike Rianda

Cast Danny McBride, Abbi Jacobson, Fred Armisen, Conan O'Brien, Mike Rianda, Sasheer Zamata, Beck Bennett, Maya Rudolph, Eric Andre, Olivia Colman, Charlyne Yi

Runtime 117 minutes

Netflix subscribers looking for a family-friendly animated movie should look no further than The Mitchells vs. The Machines . The comedy stars Abbi Jacobson, Danny McBride, and Maya Rudolph as members of a dysfunctional family whose cross-country road trip becomes tangled up in a plot by an evil AI to take over the world. Particularly pertinent storytelling in 2023. Blending both 3D and traditional animation, The Mitchells vs. The Machines is one of the most visually impressive animations on the platform (and indeed of recent years, generally) and it deservedly picked up an Oscar nomination for Best Animated Feature.

Full of heart, funny and featuring a wonderfully unhinged villain turn from Olivia Colman, The Mitchells vs. The Machines offers something for everyone. It can surely only be a matter of time before Netflix cements plans for The Mitchells vs. The Machines 2 . It can't come soon enough.

Paddington (2014)

Release Date January 16, 2015

Director Paul King

Cast Nicole Kidman, Sally Hawkins, Hugh Bonneville, Ben Whishaw

Runtime 95minutes

Given Hollywood's fascination with eking as much money out of nostalgic properties as possible, it was only a matter of time before someone turned their attention to the famous marmalade sandwich-loving bear from Darkest Peru. Luckily, that someone was Paul King, who made Paddington , an achingly British delight that has as much heart as it does slapstick comedy. Essentially a found family comedy, the beloved movie is the perfect answer for anyone looking for a unifying family watch.

Based on the original book series by Michael Bond, Paddington sees the wholesome bear, voiced by Ben Whishaw, invited (somewhat reluctantly by certain parties) to live with a family in Notting Hill. The very definition of a gentle, cozy comedy, Paddington carries a deeper meaning of acceptance and love, and boasts easily one of the highest rewatchability scores of all of Netflix's best movies.

Maestro (2023)

Athena (2022).

The opening minutes of  Athena  are some of the most visceral, astonishing filmmaking you’ll ever see. The film, which is set in France, follows three brothers who have their lives upended after their younger sibling dies. The movie is about radicalism, violence, and police brutality, and it’s about the way those who are disadvantaged often seem doomed to remain that way. It’s also a shockingly well-directed action movie filled with breathtaking sequences that only underscore just how shocking the violence on display often is.

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery (2022)

All quiet on the western front (2022).

Netflix took a fairly big swing on this German-language remake of  All Quiet on the Western Front , and it paid off with a truly good movie on Netflix. The movie tells the story of a group of young soldiers who enlist to fight on behalf of Germany and ultimately discover the real toll that war takes on those who have to live their lives in the trenches. It’s stunningly filmed, and one of the best entries in the long line of immersive war movies from recent years. The Oscars agreed, and nominated it for nine total awards, including Best Picture. All Quiet on the Western Front  is one of the most enduring war novels ever written, and this 2022 version reminds us how horrific war is, no matter what side you’re on.

Don't Look Up (2021)

Mank (2020), extraction (2020), jim & andy: the great beyond - featuring a very special, contractually obligated mention of tony clifton (2017), always be my maybe (2019), the social dilemma (2020), monty python and the holy grail (1975), the power of the dog (2021), tick, tick...boom (2021).

Adapting a musical of the same name, t ick, tick…BOOM! tells the story of Jonathan Larson (Andrew Garfield) in the years before he wrote Rent . With sharp direction from Lin-Manuel Miranda and an incredible soundtrack of Larson originals, the movie has more than enough frenetic energy to tell its story of a struggling artist with winsome verve. Andrew Garfield’s incredible central performance is the icing on the cake of this vibrant musical.

The Irishman (2019)

One of many late-period Martin Scorsese masterpieces,  The Irishman  tells the story of a mid-level gangster (Robert De Niro) who befriends Jimmy Hoffa (Al Pacino) and ultimately plays a role in his death. In Scorsese’s hands, though, this becomes an examination of the way one man alienates everyone around him, and ultimately finds himself old, friendless, and totally alone, stuck in a nursing home trying to convince everyone that his life as a gangster is worth remembering.

The Disciple (2020)

Da 5 bloods (2020), the wonder (2022), his house (2020), roma (2018).

A delicate portrait of a family, and specifically of that family’s housekeeper,  Roma  is one of the best autobiographical stories a filmmaker has ever told. That’s in part because Alfonso Cuaron is such a master of framing and shot composition, and in part because the script so delicately weaves together political and personal elements. Every performance in  Roma  is note-perfect, and although the movie is in Spanish, any English-speaking viewer who takes the time to watch it will undoubtedly be swept away by its sweeping visions of one family’s life in Mexico City in the 1970s.

Mudbound (2017)

Ma rainey's black bottom (2020), the killer (2023), moneyball (2011).

There's a lot of competition out there in the streaming world, and it can be hard to shuffle through the services to find the best movies to stream right now. Though there are plenty of great movies on Netflix and Amazon still has the platform beat in terms of overall quality, many of the movies on Hulu can't be streamed anywhere else. The best movies on Hulu can be gritty, family-friendly, and even sci-fi-oriented. So if you're looking to expand your binge-watching horizons, we've found the best movies to watch on Hulu right now.

White Men Can't Jump (2023)

HBO Max was one of the most popular streaming services in the world due to both the volume and the quality of the shows and movies on the platform. You've probably noticed when you log into HBO Max that the platform has been replaced by Max. What does this mean? WarnerMedia and Discovery have merged all of their content into one convenient location. You can still enjoy all of the shows like Succession and The Sopranos that were available on HBO Max, and this new streaming service also includes the kinds of reality shows that were available on Discovery+. Essentially, the libraries of the two services have been merged. Whatever kind of show you're looking for, you're likely to find it on Max. From iconic dramas to some of the funniest comedies ever created, every show on this list is a must-watch, whether it's 30 years old or just came out this year. Here are the best Max shows.

The Wire (2002)

Disney is arguably the most iconic entertainment brand in the world. The company's properties, both original and acquired, combine to produce content that transcends age demographics. Disney has built a brand that's beloved by children, and those children eventually age into adults who introduce their kids to the films they loved when they were young. Disney's animation alone has made it iconic, but in recent years, the company has also acquired some of the biggest pieces of intellectual property there are. And, with Disney Plus available on any device, you can watch all these movies whenever you want.

Between its acquisitions of both Marvel and Star Wars, there's a good chance that whatever you love is being shepherded to screens both large and small by Disney. When they launched Disney+, the company was sure to fill it with both those nostalgic animated classics and plenty of new stuff as well. It's meant to be a streaming service for all ages, which is why the selection of movies available there is so diverse. These Disney Plus movies will make you laugh and cry and leave you eager for a rewatch. Here's a look at the best movies on Disney Plus.

Netflix top 10 movies — here’s the 3 worth watching right now

These are the movies you need to stream in the Netflix top 10

Blake Lively in A Simple Favor movie (2018)

  • Best of Netflix top 10
  • Full Netflix top 10

The Netflix top 10 has been rather static in recent weeks with the same handful of flicks taking the top spots for several days. But that’s finally changing as new movies are making their way into this ever-rotating ranking of the films drawing the most attention from subscribers.

The Netflix most-watched list is a great place to start when you’re looking for something to watch on the streaming service , but just because a movie ranks high, doesn’t guarantee its quality. Case in point, the truly terrible comic book movie “Madame Web” is currently the No.1 Netflix movie, and as somebody who suffered through it in theaters, I strongly advise you to skip it.

To help you find the gems, I’m picking out the movies in the Netflix top 10 that are worthy of your viewing time. This list includes a twisting mystery thriller, an AI-focused action movie and a family feature that is bursting with color and musical numbers. There’s something for everybody here.

This article is based on the Netflix top 10 as of 6:45 a.m. ET on Wednesday, May 22. And if you want even more top films that you can stream right now, check out our list of the 9 new movies to stream this week including “Dune Part Two” and “Atlas".

Best movies in the Netflix top 10

‘a simple favor’ (2018).

A twisting crime thriller, with a comedic element, in “A Simple Favor” Anna Kendrick plays Stephanie, a widowed single mom who runs a crafts and cooking vlog. When she befriends the glamorous mother of her son’s classmate, Emily (Blake Lively), the two instantly connect despite their differences. However, when Emily mysteriously disappears without a trace, it’s up to Stephanie to investigate. Along the way, she learns surprising secrets and discovers that Emily’s perfect lifestyle isn’t quite as flawless as it appears.

Directed by Paul Feig, “A Simple Favor” is a seriously fun movie. It offers uncomplicated thrills with a compelling mystery at its core. The performances from Kendrick and Lively are also excellent, and anybody with an eye for fashion will appreciate the costuming too. If you’re looking for a thriller that swaps broadening darkness for a more vibrant color palette, “A Simple Favour” is a great option. Plus, now’s the time to watch with a sequel coming.

‘Thelma the Unicorn’ (2024)

Made in the same mold as Illumination’s “Sing" franchise, “Thelma the Unicorn” is an animated comedy with a musical twist based on the children’s book series by Aaron Blabey. It’s the perfect pick if you need a movie that will keep the little ones entertained, but with a toe-tapping soundtrack, you might find slightly older viewers singing along as well.

The Netflix original movie centers on the eponymous Thelma, a pony with wild dreams of becoming a famous singer. After blowing a big audition, the mare gets her shot at fame when she’s mistaken for a glitter-covered unicorn and quickly rises to global stardom. But her new life of fame, fortune and glitzy lights comes at a high cost as the pony begins to realize that hiding your true self isn’t so easy after all. “Thelma the Unicorn” includes the voice talents of Brittany Howard, Will Forte, Fred Armisen and Zach Galifianakis.

‘Upgrade’ (2018)

Set in a cyberpunk dystopian future, Grey Trace (Logan Marshall-Green) is an auto mechanic who is left paralyzed in hospital after a brutal mugging that also sees his beloved wife murdered. When a billionaire inventor offers Grey an A.I. implant called STEM that will restore his body, and give him upgraded abilities, he sets out on a blood-soaked quest to get revenge on the thugs who ruined his life, but can this artificial intelligence be fully controlled?

“Upgrade” is a slickly crafted action movie that packs a surprising amount of brains along with its impressive brawn. The A.I.-focused story feels increasingly topical, and dark humor is used to great effect. If you want an action movie that will keep you enthralled from start to finish, and get your adrenaline spiking, “Upgrade” is the Netflix movie for you. Just be prepared to overlook some slightly ropey effects due to the movie’s relatively modest budget.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry Celebrate Princess Lilibet's 3rd Birthday with Party at Montecito Home (Exclusive)

Ahead of daughter Lili's birthday on June 4, friends and family gathered at the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's California home for a celebration over the weekend

  • Meghan Markle and Prince Harry celebrated their daughter Princess Lilibet's 3rd birthday with a party at their Montecito home
  • Princess Lilibet was born in California in June 2021 and named after Queen Elizabeth and Princess Diana
  • Meghan described her kids Archie and Lili as "very chatty" and "sweet" during her recent trip to Nigeria with Harry

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry ’s little princess is turning 3!

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex will mark the third birthday of their daughter, Princess Lilibet , on June 4, but they got the festivities started early with pre-birthday bash. The family celebrated over the weekend with a party at home in Montecito, California, PEOPLE confirms. Among the guests were close friends and family as well as some of Lili's friends.

Lilibet Diana Mountbatten-Windsor was born in California after Prince Harry and Meghan stepped back from their royal roles and moved to Meghan’s home state in the U.S. with their son, Prince Archie , now 5, in 2020. Lilibet’s birth announcement, shared on the Archewell Foundation website, said that she was named after Queen Elizabeth ’s family nickname while her middle name, Diana , "was chosen to honor her beloved late grandmother, the Princess of Wales."

The birth announcement also referred to the newborn as Lili, a nickname that Prince Harry and Meghan have continued to call their daughter.

In March 2023, PEOPLE exclusively revealed that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex were using their children’s royal titles through the news of their daughter’s christening announcement . Once their grandfather King Charles acceded to the throne in September 2022, Archie and Lilibet were afforded the titles of prince and princess , making them Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.

The royal family's official website was updated to reflect the children's new titles the next day, and the children are referred to by their royal titles in their parents’ biographies on sussex.com, which launched in February. Around the same time, PEOPLE learned that Prince Harry, 39, and Meghan, 42, have adopted their titles of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex as the last name for their children. PEOPLE understands that Sussex is their family surname. Using their titles as their children's last names follows the tradition historically used by members of the royal family.

Prince Harry and Meghan have raised their children outside of the spotlight since stepping back from their royal roles, and the world caught the first glimpse of Lilibet on the Sussexes' 2021 holiday card .

"This year, 2021, we welcomed our daughter, Lilibet, to the world. Archie made us a 'Mama' and a 'Papa,' and Lili made us a family," Harry and Meghan said in the greeting.

Six months later, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex traveled to the U.K. with both of their kids for Queen Elizabeth’s Platinum Jubilee festivities in June 2022. The timing coincided with Princess Lilibet’s first birthday , which Prince Harry and Meghan celebrated with a gathering at Frogmore Cottage , which they used as their home in the U.K. until last year.

The couple released the first portrait of Lili , taken by photographer and friend Misan Harriman, during the birthday party that a spokesperson described as a "casual, intimate backyard picnic." The photo showed Lilibet smiling in a blue dress with a white bow in her red hair, which she and her brother Archie inherited from dad Harry!

Fans got a further glimpse of the celebration in the docuseries Harry & Meghan , which premiered on Netflix in December 2022.

Prince Harry and Meghan have shared sweet details about Lilibet through the years, from her "very chilled" nature to her determination to "keep up" with her big brother. Archie turned 5 on May 6, and the Sussexes celebrated his birthday privately before Prince Harry and Meghan embarked on their official trip to Nigeria , which was significant as their first official international trip since stepping back from their royal roles.

Though Prince Archie and Princess Lili didn’t tag along for the tour, they were top of mind for Prince Harry and Meghan. While visiting a school in Abuja on the first day in Nigeria, the Duchess of Sussex revealed that "singing and dancing" was Lili’s "favorite class," probably because of "all the jumping around." Meghan also said that Archie liked construction as children showed off their robotic projects in a STEM class.

The Duchess of Sussex later described her kids as " very chatty , sweet children" while speaking at a women’s leadership event on May 11 and mentioned that she was " missing my babies " on May 12, which was Mother’s Day in the U.S.

'Hit Man' (2024)

Straight after its limited theatrical release, Glen Powell ’s latest film, Hit Man , is getting its streaming debut. The romantic crime-comedy hails from Richard Linklater , most known for directing the Before trilogy, School of Rock , and Boyhood . Linklater and Powell also co-wrote the screenplay, based on a 2001 Texas Monthly magazine article of the same name by Skip Hollandsworth . Hit Man follows the very ordinary Gary Johnson (Powell), a staffer with New Orleans P.D. who gets hired to go undercover as a hitman (in extraordinary disguises) and arrest those who try to hire him. But things take a bad turn when Gary meets Maddy ( Adria Arjona ), a woman seeking a hitman to kill her husband. If you are thinking that this might be just another screwball comedy/action movie about a hitman , then Gary Johnson and his mastery of disguise will change your mind. At its initial screenings and festival circuit, Hit Man earned great praise from critics, with positive reviews for the story and Powell’s performance.

Inspired by an unbelievable true story, a strait-laced professor discovers his hidden talent as a fake hit man. He meets his match in a client who steals his heart and ignites a powder keg of deception, delight, and mixed-up identities.

'Ultraman Rising' (2024)

Not to be confused with the Ultraman anime series , this all-new animated superhero film is a standalone project but co-produced by Netflix Animation and the franchise owner Tsuburaya Productions. Ultraman: Rising marks the 44th film in the franchise and hails from Shannon Tindle in his feature directorial debut, which he co-writes with Marc Haimes. Fans might know Tindle from his previous work Lost Ollie and Kubo and the Two Strings . Ultraman: Rising follows Ken Sato, a celebrated baseball player who lives a secret life as the giant superhero Ultraman. But when he defeats a kaiju and adopts her baby, Sato is forced to juggle life, career, and his superhero role. Though not connected to the previous series and/or films, Ultraman: Rising manages to keep the theme in place, as the trailer reveals , where an average man can turn into a super-powerful human. The film also gives an introduction to the Earthbound hero, albeit in a reimagined take, so, even if you are unfamiliar with the world of Ultraman, you can still enjoy the all-new animated film. Meanwhile, you can also watch all three seasons of the Ultraman series, currently streaming on Netflix .

Ultraman: Rising (2024)

The legacy of a colossal hero is passed down to his unsuspecting son in a futuristic city besieged by giant monsters. Struggling with his new-found powers and the weight of expectations, the young hero learns to harness his abilities under the guidance of a veteran warrior to defend humanity from impending doom.

'A Family Affair' (2024)

This rom-com has been long in the making and quite an anticipated one, with the likes of Nicole Kidman and Zac Efron gracing the screen as love interests (again). A Family Affair hails from Richard LaGravenese , best known for directing films like P.S. I Love You , and writing The Fisher King and Water for Elephants . The upcoming romantic comedy-drama follows a young woman named Zara, assistant to a movie star, Chris Cole, who falls for her mother. Joey King stars as Zara with Kathy Bates and Liza Koshy joining the ensemble cast. A Family Affair also reunites Efron and Kidman, who had previously shared the screen in The Paperboy . While the film’s trailer is yet to be out, you can check out the recently released images to get an idea of what’s coming when the movie drops this June.

A Family Affair (2024)

When an elderly matriarch summons her extended family for a grand reunion, the gathering unearths unresolved conflicts and buried secrets among the clan. As relatives from various generations clash and reconcile, the family navigates through emotional discoveries and the power of familial ties.

'Baki Hanma VS Kengan Ashura' (2024)

Get ready for an epic showdown as the two behemoths of martial arts anime finally cross paths. Baki Hanma VS Kengan Ashura will see the long-awaited crossover event between the two very popular and powerful anime characters , based on their respective manga series of the same name. Baki Hanma , created by Keisuke Itagaki , follows the titular young man who trains himself to become powerful enough to defeat his father, the strongest fighter in the world. Kengan Ashura, created by Yabako Sandrovich and illustrated by Daromeon , tells the story of Ohma “Ashura” Tokita, a mysterious gladiator who fights like a living spectacle of strength, strategy, and unbeatable power. And now, in the upcoming Baki Hanma VS Kengan Ashura , these two fierce fighters will come face-to-face in what we can only expect to be the biggest fighting event we have seen in either of these shows. The film is directed by Toshiki Hirano , who had previously directed episodes of the Baki Hanma anime series ; and written by Atsuo Ishino , best known for writing Golden Kamuy and Chihayafuru . Although the detailed plot is still under wraps, we can expect to see ultimate duels between these two mighty men, where the storyline might pick up after the second season of Kengan Ashura , as well as that of Baki Hanma . As the recently released trailer shows, Baki and Ohma will combat each other in a series of high-stakes battles that will declare who is the strongest fighter in their shared universe.

'Trigger Warning' (2024)

This all-new action thriller marks Jessica Alba ’s comeback to the big screen since 2019’s Killers Anonymous , and she is going all guns blazing, literally. Based on a short story by Otep Shamaya , Trigger Warning is directed by Indonesian filmmaker Mouly Surya , in her English language debut, and is written by John Brancato ( The Game ), Josh Olson ( A History of Violence ), and Halley Gross ( Westworld ). It’s worth noting that Surya is also behind Indonesia’s 2017 Cannes entry Marlina the Murderer in Four Acts , her third feature film. The film follows Alba as Parker, a skilled Special Forces Officer suffering from trauma, who returns to her hometown following her father’s death and takes on the family business. But soon, she finds herself in the crosshairs of a violent gang and local politicians. John Wick franchise producer, Basil Iwanyk is also attached to the project, so you can expect a similar action-thriller experience. As the recently released trailer shows , it is going to be an action-packed ride with gang violence and political corruption as the premise.

Trigger Warning (2024)

After taking over a small-town bar from her late grandfather, a former soldier discovers a web of illegal activities connected to the establishment. Her efforts to clean up lead her into a dangerous confrontation with powerful enemies, pushing her to leverage her military training in a fight for justice.

'Under Paris' (2024)

Fresh off his recently released Mayhem! , French filmmaker Xavier Gens is back with another action-packed film in Under Paris . Gens is best known for directing the films Frontier(s) and Cold Skin , and select episodes of Gangs of London and Lupin . Berenice Bejo , a French actress best known for the Academy Award-winning The Artist stars as the film’s protagonist, Sophia. Directed and co-written by Gens, the upcoming horror action follows a grieving scientist who must face her past trauma to save Paris from a giant shark. The film also reunites Gens with actor Nassim Lyes , who previously worked in Mayhem! With underwater terror, shark attacks, and survival horror, Under Paris surely feels like Jaws in an urban setting.

'Drawing Closer' (2024)

Moving away from high-stakes action and excitement, this Japanese film is something to look out for if you are seeking a touching story about life and death . Drawing Closer is an emotional drama about two people who have very little time left to live but decide to make each other’s life a little better. A 17-year-old Akito is diagnosed with a terminal heart disease with only a year to live. He then meets Haruna, a terminally ill girl with six months to live. Intrigued by Haruna’s courage and her indomitable optimism toward death, Akito tries to hide his own illness but keeps wondering if he can fall in love when his days are limited. A poignant story of love, courage, and accepting the realities of life, Drawing Closer appears to be both heartwarming and heartbreaking , and joins the ranks of similar love stories we see in A Fault in Our Stars , Love Story (1970), and Netflix’s Irreplaceable You . As the trailer reveals, the film will also explore a secret that Haruna leaves behind. The film is based on Ao Morita ’s novel Yomei Ichinen to Senkokusareta Bokuga, Yomei Hantoshi no Kimi to Deatta Hanashi , which can be translated as “ The story of how I, who was told I only had one year to live, met you, who only had half a year .”
