12. First They Killed My Father (2017)

Directed by Angeline Jolie , this one is the true story of a 5-year-old girl named Loung Ung and her struggles with her family when the Khmer Rouge had taken over Cambodia in the year 1975. Their terrorizing rule led to the death of over 2 million Cambodians. The film shows how Ung and her siblings were sent to Labor Camps and were trained to become soldiers at such a young and delicate age. This film holds a great amount of historical accuracy and clearly, a lot of effort has been into portraying Loung Ung’s story. It does not focus too much on showing the violence and gore prevailing at that time and instead shows the underlying terror and chaos during the time which makes this one a great watch.

Christine Chubbuck was a TV reporter back in the 70s. This film tells her story by narrating her struggles as a working woman, pressures from her home and also her own depression . This film has been quite under the radar but deserves more appreciation. It tends to get inside your head with its depressing characters and storyline with uncomfortable slow burn throughout. Note that this movie can be triggering for those who are already going through something but overall, it’s a very good movie with some brilliant acting.

Featuring Bob Ross, Steve Ross, Vicky Ross, and John Thamm, ‘Bob Ross: Happy Accidents, Betrayal & Greed’ is a biographical documentary film directed by Joshua Rofé. As the name suggests, the movie revolves around the rise of the titular protagonist, a brilliant painter and television host, who spread love, joy, and happiness to the millions of viewers glued to his programs on their television screens from around the world. With great success came significant financial burdens. While offering a touching overview of Bob’s inspiring life, the film immediately turns its attention towards the battle for his business empire that saddened and infuriated a lot of his fans.

Both landed Oscar nominations for their portrayals. In fact, the movie earned five acting nominations in total (winning supporting actress for Estelle Parsons), plus nods for best director and best picture, too.

'The Pianist' (2002)

Controversial director Roman Polanski won best director for this movie that is based on the autobiography of Holocaust survivor Władysław Szpilman.

The movie also won best actor for its young star Adrien Brody, too, for his critically acclaimed performance as Szpilman.

'Milk' (2008)

Gus Van Sant's "Milk" tells the story of gay rights activist Harvey Milk , the first-ever openly gay person to be elected to public office in California.

Jesse Eisenberg plays Zuckerberg, while Andrew Garfield, Justin Timberlake, and Rooney Mara chip in with outstanding supporting performances, too. The movie competed for multiple Oscars, but ultimately only won for Sorkin's script despite David Fincher being a hot contender for best director.

'My Week With Marylin' (2011)

There have been many biographical films and TV shows that have explored the life of Marilyn Monroe , but none match up to Michelle Williams' performance as the iconic actress.

This movie cleverly focuses on one week in 1956, when Monroe was shooting the 1957 film "The Prince and the Showgirl" with Laurence Olivier (played in this film by Kenneth Branagh).

While shooting the film in London, Monroe is escorted around the town by a young, hopeful filmmaker (Eddie Redmayne).

'The Iron Lady' (2011)

Meryl Streep won her third Oscar for this biopic, winning best actress for playing Margaret Thatcher .

While the movie itself received luke-warm reviews, this is worth a watch for Streep's powerhouse performance alone as we are shown Thatcher's life from a young politician to her days as Prime Minister to the years when her health began to decline.

'Get on Up' (2011)

The late, great Chadwick Boseman starred in multiple biopics, but his performance as James Brown in "Get on Up" is one of his very best.

This biopic tells the complete story of Brown's life as he rose from poverty to become one of the most iconic musicians of all time.

'Fruitvale Station' (2013)

Michael B. Jordan made a name for himself with this heartbreaking and tragic movie following the story of Oscar Grant III.

The movie, which also stars fellow future MCU star Brie Larson, follows Oscar on the last day of 2008, which detailed how he was killed at the hands of police.

'Philomena' (2013)

Steve Coogan traded in his comedy chops for more drama with this movie, which he also wrote (with Jeff Pope).

Coogan plays a journalist who agrees to take on the story of an elderly Irish woman's (Judi Dench) search for her long-lost son, who was taken away from her by nuns when she was forced to live in a convent.

Dench earned an Oscar nomination for her funny and moving performance.

'The Theory of Everything' (2014)

This movie explores the lives of Stephen Hawking (Eddie Redmayne) and his now ex-wife Jane Hawking (Felicity Jones), from their times as university students to Hawking's diagnosis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and onwards.

Jones earned an Oscar nomination for her role while Redmayne won the Oscar for best actor.

'Legend' (2015)

Another case of an actor's performance outshining their own film. In "Legend," Tom Hardy takes on the dual role of Kray twins, Ronnie and Reggie, as the film follows the rise and fall of the infamous gangsters.

Hardy is unrecognizable in both roles and this film is worth watching for him alone.

'Trumbo' (2015)

Bryan Cranston earned his first and (so far) only Oscar nomination for his portrayal of blacklisted screenwriter Dalton Trumbo, the man who wrote "Spartacus," "Roman Holiday" and "The Brave One."

This biopic follows Trumbo's early success in the industry to his eventual blacklisting in Hollywood for being a member of the USA's communist party and his career thereafter.

'Steve Jobs' (2015)

Another killer script from Aaron Sorkin served as the basis for this quietly-thrilling look at Steve Jobs, the late creative who built Apple.

The movie cleverly focuses on three separate product launches in different years, showing the sort of person Jobs was at work and at home.

Despite a troubled production history, which saw a change of actors and directors more than once, the movie soars with Michael Fassbender in the lead role of Jobs. He and Kate Winslet were both nominated for Oscars.

'The Founder' (2016)

This is the story of how one of the largest and most recognizable brands in the world was made: McDonald's.

Michael Keaton stars as the shady, ruthless, and ambitious businessman Ray Kroc, who stole the McDonald brothers' fast food business out from under them.

Four Daughters (2023)

Well-deserving of its Oscar nomination for Best Documentary Feature, Four Daughters is a Tunisian film that mixes traditional documentary practices with fictionalized moments to create a cinematic project unlike anything else in the genre. The four daughters in question belong to Olfa Hamrouni, a Tunisian mother who lost two of her four children when they were radicalized by the Islamic State and moved to Libya. Performers stand in for the two eldest siblings, and Tunisian and Egyptian actress Hend Sabry plays Olfa, but interviews with the real-life Olfa and her two youngest daughters are also heavily featured. A film about mothers and daughters as told through one family’s traumatic story, Four Daughters is affecting, creatively structured, and deeply memorable. —I.G.

What Happened, Miss Simone (2015)

Netflix is home to numerous documentaries about celebrities and artists, but few have led a life as fascinating as Nina Simone 's. However, his life is turned upside down when he’s identified with AIDS and this is when Ron discovers a drug that is banned that can help him live. Incredibly moved by the struggle of fellow AIDS sufferers, he decides to sneak the drug into his home and distribute it to those who are in need. If you’ve ever doubted Matthew McConaughey’s actingskills, this film will convince you of his talent and to Jared Leto, this one is likely to be one of his finest performance.

First They Killed My Father (2017)

Produced and directed by Angeline Jolie. This film is the real story of a five-year-old girl known as Loung Ung and her struggles with her family members when she was a victim of the Khmer Rouge had taken over Cambodia in 1975. The Khmer Rouge’s brutal rule resulted in the deaths of more than two million Cambodians. The film reveals the process by which Ung and her family members were taken to Labor Camps and were taught in the art of becoming soldiers an extremely young and fragile age. The film has a significant quantity of accuracy in the past, and it is evident that much effort was put into telling Loung the story of Ung. The film doesn’t focus too much on the gore and violence that was prevalent in the time, but instead depicts the chaos and terror of the period, which makes this film a fantastic film to watch.

With Sean Penn and James Franco James Franco and Sean Penn, “Milk” is a story about Harvey Milk starting from his 40th birthday all the way until his passing. The film follows his life through his struggle to fight for the rights of gay people across the United States as an activist , and then becomes the first Californian elected gay official. The biopic also focuses on the relationships he had with two men throughout his journey and how the loss of one truly affects him. “Milk” is a moving film that will make you feel the pain that Harvey Milk and all the gay activists of the time.

Neruda (2016)

“Neruda” tells the story of the poet who won a noble prize Pablo Neruda who is chased by an inspector after joining his Communist group in latter part of 1940s. The most appealing thing about the movie is the fact that it actually transports you back to the 1940s, giving you an entire retro feel featuring car chases that appear to come straight from the 1940s detective films. The narration of both inspector and the suspect battle with one another, giving viewers a mixed impression however, they are at the same time two distinct stories.

Nowhere Boy (2009)

The Fighter is the ideal film for all boxing film enthusiasts out there. The film is filled with fantastic music, amazing performances, and a real story that will definitely motivate you.

The Founder is the real tale of Ray Croc who was a salesperson and saw a lucrative business opportunity when he went to two brothers’ exclusive food establishment. Mark Ruffalo and Anne Hathaway are both cinematic powerhouses when it comes to gripping dramas, and bringing them together under the directorship of Todd Haynes in the 2019 legal thriller Dark Water made the movie a recipe for success both at the box office and on Netflix. Dark Waters is a semi-fictionalized retelling of the infamous 1990s legal case where lawyer Robert Bilott (played by Ruffalo) took chemical manufacturer DuPont to court for damages to the local environment of his grandmother's town of Parkersburg, West Virginia.

As the drama unfolds, the case gets messier and messier, with suspected unregulated chemicals being used that led to the deaths of both natural wildlife and the livestock the residents of the town depend on for their livelihood. While it didn't win many, Dark Waters was nominated for multiple awards, and was successful in securing the Environmental Media Award for Best Feature Film in 2020.

Between her work in Homecoming and Gaslight , Julia Roberts is proving herself just as adept at taking on dark, dramatic subject matter as she is with feel-good rom-coms, and Leave the World Behind is another prime example. In the film, she plays Amanda Sandford, a wife and mother who takes her family on a spontaneous Long Island vacation. However, things go awry when none of their technology devices work, and a father and daughter show up at the vacation house claiming they live there.

As Amanda gets closer to the father, G. H. (Mahershala Ali), she discovers that all these strange occurrences may be the result of a government conspiracy. Leave the World Behind is written and directed by Mr. Robot creator Sam Esmail, who also produced Homecoming and Gaslit , and the movie proves to be another winning collaboration with Roberts. Like these other works, Leave the World Behind is a slow burn, which may not appeal to everybody. Set in a drab retro-futuristic world, it stars John Boyega as the titular drug dealer, who drags himself through the same cycle of everyday life, in a grim Groundhog Day-style mundane nightmare that not even being shot repeatedly seems to interrupt.

Delightfully twisty, and featuring a walking homage to Blaxpoitation movies in Jamie Foxx's pimp Slick Charles, They Cloned Tyrone is fast-paced, occasionally bizarre and a great way to spend a couple of hours. Come for the sci-fi, but stay for the Mary J Blige elevator scene.

Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore have teamed up to make several romantic comedies, including cult classics in the genre like 50 First Dates and The Wedding Singer. In 2014, they reunited once more for Blended, a relatively by-the-numbers romantic comedy that utilizes their on-screen chemistry to deliver a satisfying viewing experience. While Blended doesn't reinvent the wheel, it does tick all the boxes fans of the duo expect, and it's unsurprising it's currently one of the most popular rom-coms on Netflix.

Blended is a second-love romance movie, with both Sandler and Barrymore playing single parents struggling to balance loneliness and dating with the struggles of raising children singlehandedly. After the pair have an awkward meet-cute at a pharmacy they go on a very unsuccessful date, only to later find themselves at the same family safari retreat in Africa. The cast also features Bella Thorne, Joel McHale, and Terry Crews, all of whom give hilarious performances.

In the age of streaming, romantic comedies are being given fewer and fewer theatrical runs, with many going straight to online platforms. While this is unfortunate for cinema-going fans of the genre, Netflix is a rom-com lover's paradise, as it boasts many original titles from Always Be My Maybe to The Kissing Booth , and To All the Boys I've Loved Before is one of the best. It sees the romantic yet shy teenage protagonist Lara Jean (Lana Condor) have her worst nightmare come true when the private love letters she wrote to her crushes go public.

Like many great teen movies, To All the Boys I've Loved Before is based on the book trilogy by Jenny Han, and the two follow-up novels also have Netflix adaptations. Genre stories that have a predominantly female audience, namely rom-com and young adult, are often dismissed, but it's impossible to ignore what a winning movie series To All the Boys is. Even though the film trilogy has wrapped, the franchise has launched a spin-off show called XO Kitty about Lara Jean's younger sister Kitty (Anna Cathcart), proving the enduring popularity of To All the Boys .

In fact, this is not his movie at all, though he does deliver a solid performance.

Culturally informed and sensitive, You Are So Not Invited To My Bat Mitzvah is a smart portrait of a landmark celebration, finding comedy and charm in its authenticity, but also in the universality of teenage life. Crucially, it understands and never talks down to the condition of adolescence, and the younger Sandler is the pick of You Are So Not Invited To My Bat Mitzvah's cast — a fledgling star who clearly learned a lot from the better comedies of her co-star father.

Shrek stars Mike Myers as the titular ogre who, after his swamp is beset with refugee fairytale creatures, must go on a quest to rescue the incredibly capable (and not at all in need of rescue, really) Princess Fiona (Cameron Diaz).

He is joined along the way by his incredibly irritating but ever-loyal future best friend Donkey (Eddie Murphy), a talking Donkey. Shrek was such a success that it secured both multiple sequels and DreamWorks place as a houshold name among family-friendly studios. Shrek's plot and animation may have contributed to its success, but the key reason it became an instant hit was its humor. Shrek is laugh-out-loud hilarious in a way that few — if any — Disney movies have managed to match before or since, and it has more than stood the test of time despite the decades since its 2001 release.

Essentially a found family comedy, the beloved movie is the perfect answer for anyone looking for a unifying family watch.

Based on the original book series by Michael Bond, Paddington sees the wholesome bear, voiced by Ben Whishaw, invited (somewhat reluctantly by certain parties) to live with a family in Notting Hill. The very definition of a gentle, cozy comedy, Paddington carries a deeper meaning of acceptance and love, and boasts easily one of the highest rewatchability scores of all of Netflix's best movies.

The film, which is set in France, follows three brothers who have their lives upended after their younger sibling dies. The movie is about radicalism, violence, and police brutality, and it’s about the way those who are disadvantaged often seem doomed to remain that way. It’s also a shockingly well-directed action movie filled with breathtaking sequences that only underscore just how shocking the violence on display often is.

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery (2022)

Netflix took a fairly big swing on this German-language remake of All Quiet on the Western Front , and it paid off with a truly good movie on Netflix. The movie tells the story of a group of young soldiers who enlist to fight on behalf of Germany and ultimately discover the real toll that war takes on those who have to live their lives in the trenches. It’s stunningly filmed, and one of the best entries in the long line of immersive war movies from recent years. The Oscars agreed, and nominated it for nine total awards, including Best Picture. All Quiet on the Western Front is one of the most enduring war novels ever written, and this 2022 version reminds us how horrific war is, no matter what side you’re on.

Don't Look Up (2021)

With sharp direction from Lin-Manuel Miranda and an incredible soundtrack of Larson originals, the movie has more than enough frenetic energy to tell its story of a struggling artist with winsome verve. Andrew Garfield’s incredible central performance is the icing on the cake of this vibrant musical.

The Irishman (2019)

One of many late-period Martin Scorsese masterpieces, The Irishman tells the story of a mid-level gangster (Robert De Niro) who befriends Jimmy Hoffa (Al Pacino) and ultimately plays a role in his death. In Scorsese’s hands, though, this becomes an examination of the way one man alienates everyone around him, and ultimately finds himself old, friendless, and totally alone, stuck in a nursing home trying to convince everyone that his life as a gangster is worth remembering.

The Disciple (2020)

A delicate portrait of a family, and specifically of that family’s housekeeper, Roma is one of the best autobiographical stories a filmmaker has ever told. That’s in part because Alfonso Cuaron is such a master of framing and shot composition, and in part because the script so delicately weaves together political and personal elements. Every performance in Roma is note-perfect, and although the movie is in Spanish, any English-speaking viewer who takes the time to watch it will undoubtedly be swept away by its sweeping visions of one family’s life in Mexico City in the 1970s.

The Netflix top 10 has been rather static in recent weeks with the same handful of flicks taking the top spots for several days. But that’s finally changing as new movies are making their way into this ever-rotating ranking of the films drawing the most attention from subscribers.

The Netflix most-watched list is a great place to start when you’re looking for something to watch on the streaming service , but just because a movie ranks high, doesn’t guarantee its quality. Case in point, the truly terrible comic book movie “Madame Web” is currently the No.1 Netflix movie, and as somebody who suffered through it in theaters, I strongly advise you to skip it.

To help you find the gems, I’m picking out the movies in the Netflix top 10 that are worthy of your viewing time. This list includes a twisting mystery thriller, an AI-focused action movie and a family feature that is bursting with color and musical numbers. There’s something for everybody here.

‘a simple favor’ (2018).

A twisting crime thriller, with a comedic element, in “A Simple Favor” Anna Kendrick plays Stephanie, a widowed single mom who runs a crafts and cooking vlog. When she befriends the glamorous mother of her son’s classmate, Emily (Blake Lively), the two instantly connect despite their differences. However, when Emily mysteriously disappears without a trace, it’s up to Stephanie to investigate. Along the way, she learns surprising secrets and discovers that Emily’s perfect lifestyle isn’t quite as flawless as it appears.

Directed by Paul Feig, “A Simple Favor” is a seriously fun movie. It offers uncomplicated thrills with a compelling mystery at its core. The performances from Kendrick and Lively are also excellent, and anybody with an eye for fashion will appreciate the costuming too. If you’re looking for a thriller that swaps broadening darkness for a more vibrant color palette, “A Simple Favour” is a great option. Plus, now’s the time to watch with a sequel coming.

‘Thelma the Unicorn’ (2024)

Made in the same mold as Illumination’s “Sing" franchise, “Thelma the Unicorn” is an animated comedy with a musical twist based on the children’s book series by Aaron Blabey. It’s the perfect pick if you need a movie that will keep the little ones entertained, but with a toe-tapping soundtrack, you might find slightly older viewers singing along as well.

The Netflix original movie centers on the eponymous Thelma, a pony with wild dreams of becoming a famous singer. After blowing a big audition, the mare gets her shot at fame when she’s mistaken for a glitter-covered unicorn and quickly rises to global stardom. But her new life of fame, fortune and glitzy lights comes at a high cost as the pony begins to realize that hiding your true self isn’t so easy after all. “Thelma the Unicorn” includes the voice talents of Brittany Howard, Will Forte, Fred Armisen and Zach Galifianakis.

‘Upgrade’ (2018)

Set in a cyberpunk dystopian future, Grey Trace (Logan Marshall-Green) is an auto mechanic who is left paralyzed in hospital after a brutal mugging that also sees his beloved wife murdered. When a billionaire inventor offers Grey an A.I. implant called STEM that will restore his body, and give him upgraded abilities, he sets out on a blood-soaked quest to get revenge on the thugs who ruined his life, but can this artificial intelligence be fully controlled?

“Upgrade” is a slickly crafted action movie that packs a surprising amount of brains along with its impressive brawn. The A.I.-focused story feels increasingly topical, and dark humor is used to great effect. If you want an action movie that will keep you enthralled from start to finish, and get your adrenaline spiking, “Upgrade” is the Netflix movie for you. Just be prepared to overlook some slightly ropey effects due to the movie’s relatively modest budget.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry ’s little princess is turning 3!

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex will mark the third birthday of their daughter, Princess Lilibet , on June 4, but they got the festivities started early with pre-birthday bash. The family celebrated over the weekend with a party at home in Montecito, California, PEOPLE confirms. Among the guests were close friends and family as well as some of Lili's friends.

Lilibet Diana Mountbatten-Windsor was born in California after Prince Harry and Meghan stepped back from their royal roles and moved to Meghan’s home state in the U.S. with their son, Prince Archie , now 5, in 2020. Lilibet’s birth announcement, shared on the Archewell Foundation website, said that she was named after Queen Elizabeth ’s family nickname while her middle name, Diana , "was chosen to honor her beloved late grandmother, the Princess of Wales."

The birth announcement also referred to the newborn as Lili, a nickname that Prince Harry and Meghan have continued to call their daughter.

In March 2023, PEOPLE exclusively revealed that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex were using their children’s royal titles through the news of their daughter’s christening announcement . Once their grandfather King Charles acceded to the throne in September 2022, Archie and Lilibet were afforded the titles of prince and princess , making them Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.

The royal family's official website was updated to reflect the children's new titles the next day, and the children are referred to by their royal titles in their parents’ biographies on sussex.com, which launched in February. Around the same time, PEOPLE learned that Prince Harry, 39, and Meghan, 42, have adopted their titles of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex as the last name for their children. PEOPLE understands that Sussex is their family surname. Using their titles as their children's last names follows the tradition historically used by members of the royal family.

Prince Harry and Meghan have raised their children outside of the spotlight since stepping back from their royal roles, and the world caught the first glimpse of Lilibet on the Sussexes' 2021 holiday card .

"This year, 2021, we welcomed our daughter, Lilibet, to the world. Archie made us a 'Mama' and a 'Papa,' and Lili made us a family," Harry and Meghan said in the greeting.

Six months later, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex traveled to the U.K. with both of their kids for Queen Elizabeth’s Platinum Jubilee festivities in June 2022. The timing coincided with Princess Lilibet’s first birthday , which Prince Harry and Meghan celebrated with a gathering at Frogmore Cottage , which they used as their home in the U.K. until last year.

The couple released the first portrait of Lili , taken by photographer and friend Misan Harriman, during the birthday party that a spokesperson described as a "casual, intimate backyard picnic." The photo showed Lilibet smiling in a blue dress with a white bow in her red hair, which she and her brother Archie inherited from dad Harry!

Fans got a further glimpse of the celebration in the docuseries Harry & Meghan , which premiered on Netflix in December 2022.

Prince Harry and Meghan have shared sweet details about Lilibet through the years, from her "very chilled" nature to her determination to "keep up" with her big brother. Archie turned 5 on May 6, and the Sussexes celebrated his birthday privately before Prince Harry and Meghan embarked on their official trip to Nigeria , which was significant as their first official international trip since stepping back from their royal roles.

Though Prince Archie and Princess Lili didn’t tag along for the tour, they were top of mind for Prince Harry and Meghan. While visiting a school in Abuja on the first day in Nigeria, the Duchess of Sussex revealed that "singing and dancing" was Lili’s "favorite class," probably because of "all the jumping around." Meghan also said that Archie liked construction as children showed off their robotic projects in a STEM class.

The Duchess of Sussex later described her kids as " very chatty , sweet children" while speaking at a women’s leadership event on May 11 and mentioned that she was " missing my babies " on May 12, which was Mother’s Day in the U.S.

'Hit Man' (2024)

Straight after its limited theatrical release, Glen Powell ’s latest film, Hit Man , is getting its streaming debut. The romantic crime-comedy hails from Richard Linklater , most known for directing the Before trilogy, School of Rock , and Boyhood . Linklater and Powell also co-wrote the screenplay, based on a 2001 Texas Monthly magazine article of the same name by Skip Hollandsworth . Hit Man follows the very ordinary Gary Johnson (Powell), a staffer with New Orleans P.D. who gets hired to go undercover as a hitman (in extraordinary disguises) and arrest those who try to hire him. But things take a bad turn when Gary meets Maddy ( Adria Arjona ), a woman seeking a hitman to kill her husband. If you are thinking that this might be just another screwball comedy/action movie about a hitman , then Gary Johnson and his mastery of disguise will change your mind. At its initial screenings and festival circuit, Hit Man earned great praise from critics, with positive reviews for the story and Powell’s performance.

Inspired by an unbelievable true story, a strait-laced professor discovers his hidden talent as a fake hit man. He meets his match in a client who steals his heart and ignites a powder keg of deception, delight, and mixed-up identities.

'Ultraman Rising' (2024)

Not to be confused with the Ultraman anime series , this all-new animated superhero film is a standalone project but co-produced by Netflix Animation and the franchise owner Tsuburaya Productions. Ultraman: Rising marks the 44th film in the franchise and hails from Shannon Tindle in his feature directorial debut, which he co-writes with Marc Haimes. Fans might know Tindle from his previous work Lost Ollie and Kubo and the Two Strings . Ultraman: Rising follows Ken Sato, a celebrated baseball player who lives a secret life as the giant superhero Ultraman. But when he defeats a kaiju and adopts her baby, Sato is forced to juggle life, career, and his superhero role. Though not connected to the previous series and/or films, Ultraman: Rising manages to keep the theme in place, as the trailer reveals , where an average man can turn into a super-powerful human. The film also gives an introduction to the Earthbound hero, albeit in a reimagined take, so, even if you are unfamiliar with the world of Ultraman, you can still enjoy the all-new animated film. Meanwhile, you can also watch all three seasons of the Ultraman series, currently streaming on Netflix .

Ultraman: Rising (2024)

The legacy of a colossal hero is passed down to his unsuspecting son in a futuristic city besieged by giant monsters. Struggling with his new-found powers and the weight of expectations, the young hero learns to harness his abilities under the guidance of a veteran warrior to defend humanity from impending doom.

'A Family Affair' (2024)

This rom-com has been long in the making and quite an anticipated one, with the likes of Nicole Kidman and Zac Efron gracing the screen as love interests (again). A Family Affair hails from Richard LaGravenese , best known for directing films like P.S. I Love You , and writing The Fisher King and Water for Elephants . The upcoming romantic comedy-drama follows a young woman named Zara, assistant to a movie star, Chris Cole, who falls for her mother. Joey King stars as Zara with Kathy Bates and Liza Koshy joining the ensemble cast. A Family Affair also reunites Efron and Kidman, who had previously shared the screen in The Paperboy . While the film’s trailer is yet to be out, you can check out the recently released images to get an idea of what’s coming when the movie drops this June.

A Family Affair (2024)

When an elderly matriarch summons her extended family for a grand reunion, the gathering unearths unresolved conflicts and buried secrets among the clan. As relatives from various generations clash and reconcile, the family navigates through emotional discoveries and the power of familial ties.

'Baki Hanma VS Kengan Ashura' (2024)

Get ready for an epic showdown as the two behemoths of martial arts anime finally cross paths. Baki Hanma VS Kengan Ashura will see the long-awaited crossover event between the two very popular and powerful anime characters , based on their respective manga series of the same name. Baki Hanma , created by Keisuke Itagaki , follows the titular young man who trains himself to become powerful enough to defeat his father, the strongest fighter in the world. Kengan Ashura, created by Yabako Sandrovich and illustrated by Daromeon , tells the story of Ohma “Ashura” Tokita, a mysterious gladiator who fights like a living spectacle of strength, strategy, and unbeatable power. And now, in the upcoming Baki Hanma VS Kengan Ashura , these two fierce fighters will come face-to-face in what we can only expect to be the biggest fighting event we have seen in either of these shows. The film is directed by Toshiki Hirano , who had previously directed episodes of the Baki Hanma anime series ; and written by Atsuo Ishino , best known for writing Golden Kamuy and Chihayafuru . Although the detailed plot is still under wraps, we can expect to see ultimate duels between these two mighty men, where the storyline might pick up after the second season of Kengan Ashura , as well as that of Baki Hanma . As the recently released trailer shows, Baki and Ohma will combat each other in a series of high-stakes battles that will declare who is the strongest fighter in their shared universe.

'Trigger Warning' (2024)

This all-new action thriller marks Jessica Alba ’s comeback to the big screen since 2019’s Killers Anonymous , and she is going all guns blazing, literally. Based on a short story by Otep Shamaya , Trigger Warning is directed by Indonesian filmmaker Mouly Surya , in her English language debut, and is written by John Brancato ( The Game ), Josh Olson ( A History of Violence ), and Halley Gross ( Westworld ). It’s worth noting that Surya is also behind Indonesia’s 2017 Cannes entry Marlina the Murderer in Four Acts , her third feature film. The film follows Alba as Parker, a skilled Special Forces Officer suffering from trauma, who returns to her hometown following her father’s death and takes on the family business. But soon, she finds herself in the crosshairs of a violent gang and local politicians. John Wick franchise producer, Basil Iwanyk is also attached to the project, so you can expect a similar action-thriller experience. As the recently released trailer shows , it is going to be an action-packed ride with gang violence and political corruption as the premise.

Trigger Warning (2024)

After taking over a small-town bar from her late grandfather, a former soldier discovers a web of illegal activities connected to the establishment. Her efforts to clean up lead her into a dangerous confrontation with powerful enemies, pushing her to leverage her military training in a fight for justice.

'Under Paris' (2024)

Fresh off his recently released Mayhem! , French filmmaker Xavier Gens is back with another action-packed film in Under Paris . Gens is best known for directing the films Frontier(s) and Cold Skin , and select episodes of Gangs of London and Lupin . Berenice Bejo , a French actress best known for the Academy Award-winning The Artist stars as the film’s protagonist, Sophia. Directed and co-written by Gens, the upcoming horror action follows a grieving scientist who must face her past trauma to save Paris from a giant shark. The film also reunites Gens with actor Nassim Lyes , who previously worked in Mayhem! With underwater terror, shark attacks, and survival horror, Under Paris surely feels like Jaws in an urban setting.

'Drawing Closer' (2024)

Moving away from high-stakes action and excitement, this Japanese film is something to look out for if you are seeking a touching story about life and death . Drawing Closer is an emotional drama about two people who have very little time left to live but decide to make each other’s life a little better. A 17-year-old Akito is diagnosed with a terminal heart disease with only a year to live. He then meets Haruna, a terminally ill girl with six months to live. Intrigued by Haruna’s courage and her indomitable optimism toward death, Akito tries to hide his own illness but keeps wondering if he can fall in love when his days are limited. A poignant story of love, courage, and accepting the realities of life, Drawing Closer appears to be both heartwarming and heartbreaking , and joins the ranks of similar love stories we see in A Fault in Our Stars , Love Story (1970), and Netflix’s Irreplaceable You . As the trailer reveals, the film will also explore a secret that Haruna leaves behind. The film is based on Ao Morita ’s novel Yomei Ichinen to Senkokusareta Bokuga, Yomei Hantoshi no Kimi to Deatta Hanashi , which can be translated as “ The story of how I, who was told I only had one year to live, met you, who only had half a year .”
