ASU, UA math departments make top 10 in regional rankings

The ability to juggle numbers is central to every successful business. Dreams, theories and imaginative concepts are fantastic, but will never make the ends meet without an accurate math mind coordinating it all. If you see the beauty in equations and can find order in a jumble of data, know that your mathematical skills are desired in many career fields.

Graduates with a degree in math find themselves in many fields, including finance, banking, computer science, insurance or education. If your future involves a graduate degree, note that according to the Chronicle of Higher Education Math majors score higher than other majors on the LSAT and GMAT.

College Factual studied 32 Bachelors programs for math in Texas, Arizona, Oklahoma and New Mexico. We ranked the top ten according to career outlook, education quality, value and student experience. 1. The University of Texas at Austin

The UT Math faculty includes two National Academy of Science members, two MacArthur Fellows and five Guggenheim Fellows. It is the #14 math program in the nation. Students and teachers participate in multiple outreach programs, including the Saturday Morning Math Group which delivers extra math education to area high school students. UT math majors earn an average starting salary of $53,000.

2. New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology: Socorro, New Mexico

Over a century ago, Socorro was a mining boom town. New Mexico Tech was established to train young mining engineers. The school has expanded into a wide range of technological fields and prides itself in producing creative thinkers. Over the last three decades, NMT has acquired government research contracts and activity has expanded dramatically. NMT math majors start their careers earning an annual average of $49,000.

3. Rice University: Houston, Texas

Rice has always been a math school at heart. In 1912, mathematics was one of its charter programs. 3 of its 9 founders were mathematicians, including its first president Edgar Odell Lovett. Today, the school offers BA and BS options in math plus a PhD track and prepares students for a broad spectrum of jobs in mathematics. Rice math majors earn an average salary of $52,000 upon graduation.

4. Southern Methodist University: Dallas, Texas

SMU specializes in computational and applied mathematics. Current research includes mathematical software, fluid dynamics, nonlinear optics and mathematical biology. The school offers BS, BA, MS and PhD programs. Their Center for Scientific Computation is a place dedicated to interdisciplinary simulation-based engineering and science. SMU math majors earn an average starting salary of $52,000.

5. Texas Tech University: Lubbock, Texas

Texas Tech prepares students for careers in math teaching with K-12 outreach programs like the Proactive Recruitment in Introductory Science and Mathematics. PRISM is funded by the National Science Foundation for the purpose of leading high school seniors and undergraduate students into biomathematics research. Texas Tech math majors earn an average of $59,000 per year after graduation.

6. University of Oklahoma-Norman: Norman, Oklahoma

Oklahoma offers a summer workshop designed to help students find the right level to begin their math educations. It also provides a number of summer research opportunities and paid study-abroad programs. Their very active Math Club hosts a variety of talks, seminars and field trips for math students and ordinary math enthusiasts. UO math majors earn an average of $51,000 per year to start their careers.

7. Arizona State University: Tempe, Arizona

ASU is a statistical research powerhouse dedicated to teaching students with a wide range of backgrounds and abilities. The department collaborates with other researchers on projects such as The Bio-Design Institute and Complex Adaptive Systems. Students aspiring to teach support ASU's Summer Programs for Kids and other outreach programs serving K-12 students. ASU math majors earn an average starting salary of $47,000.

8. Texas Christian University: Forth Worth, Texas

TCU offers an actuarial concentration for students wishing to fast-track their careers in the insurance industry. It also has a PhD program to educate future pure mathematics researchers and university professors. The student-run TCU Math Clinic exists to aid current students while training the next generation of teachers. TCU math majors earn an average of $51,000 annually to start their careers.

9. University of Arizona: Tucson, Arizona

The Arizona Math Department includes two Regents' Professors and three University Distinguished Professors. External research grants and contracts for the department average $5 million per year. Key areas of research include number theory, geometric analysis, computational science, probability and non-linear waves. UA math majors begin their careers earning an annual average of $49,000.

10. University of Houston: Houston, Texas

The Teach Houston program was pioneered by UH and strives to fill the need for math and science teachers in inner city classrooms. The movement mentors students, future teachers and current educators. The department contains two Cullen Chair Professors, one MD Anderson Chair Professor and one Moore's Chair Professor. Houston math majors earn an average starting salary of $48,000.

Northern Arizona University came in 18th

place out of 32 regional colleges offering four-year math majors.

School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences

ASU's School of Mathematics and Statistical Sciences  offers quality instruction that leads to bachelors, masters and doctoral degrees in applied mathematics, theoretical mathematics, mathematics education and statistics, and is at the top n the nation for doctorates awarded to graduates from underrepresented groups. 

Our faculty studies intersect with researchers in many other disciplines to forge collaborations in the life sciences, medicine and health, geoscience, atmospheric science, computer science and engineering. With programs and the dedicated faculty who run them, our school is one of the most exciting places in the country to study the mathematical and statistical sciences.

We also offer a wide array of supplemental instructional services through the Math Community Center , resources and degrees for teachers, and tutoring, mentoring and after-school programs for children . There are numerous opportunities for undergraduates and graduate students to be immersed in research.

The ASU actuarial sciences program  is one of our newest offerings and one of the few programs offered in the West.

Program Description

Degree Awarded: PHD Mathematics Education

This transdisciplinary PhD program in mathematics education accommodates students from a variety of academic backgrounds. It provides students with a solid foundation in graduate-level mathematics as well as research skills and perspectives that enable them to incorporate mathematics into such core educational areas as:

Conducting individual and collaborative research in the learning and teaching of mathematics is an integral part of the program.

Additional Curriculum Information Four to five graduate-level (500 and above) elective courses from mathematics, cognitive science, psychology, educational technology, philosophy or research should be taken as approved by the advisor.

For the area courses, students are required to take four graduate-level courses from the following areas of interest: mathematics, applied mathematics or statistics. Students should see the academic unit for the approved course list.

Students should see the school's website for information about qualifier and comprehensive examinations based on math coursework.

The doctoral dissertation culminating experience consists of a dissertation prospectus, oral dissertation defense and the submission of a final revised, formatted dissertation document to the Graduate College. Dissertations are composed under chair- and committee-supervised research, including literature review, research, data collection and analysis, and writing.

When approved by the student's supervisory committee and the Graduate College, up to 30 credit hours from a previously awarded master's degree may be used for this program. If students do not have a previously awarded master's degree, the remaining coursework is made up of electives and research.

Admission Requirements

Applicants must fulfill the requirements of both the Graduate College and The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

Applicants are eligible to apply to the program if they have earned a bachelor's or master's degree in mathematics or a closely related area, with exceptionally high grades in advanced coursework in mathematics, from a regionally accredited institution.

Applicants must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00 (scale is 4.00 = "A") in the last 60 hours of their first bachelor's degree program or a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00 (scale is 4.00 = "A") in an applicable master's degree program.

All applicants must submit:

• graduate admission application and application fee
• official transcripts
• statement of education and career goals
• writing sample
• three letters of recommendation
• proof of English proficiency

Additional Application Information An applicant whose native language is not English must provide proof of English proficiency regardless of their current residency.

At least two of the letters of recommendation must be from faculty.

There are 21 newly ranked institutions in the QS World University Rankings 2025, with the highest debutant being the American University of Ras Al Khaimah (AURAK) in the United Arab Emirates, with a ranking of 485th – the University scored 100 in indicators ‘International students’ and ‘International faculty’.  

Global highlights of the QS World University Rankings 2025 

China and India’s universities have seen the biggest upward movements for both the number of institutions increasing their ranking position and for the number of significant moves (defined as 10 places or more) in the QS World University Rankings 2025.

Other highlights in institutional performance globally are: 

The UK’s strongest performance is in the ‘International Student Ratio’ indicator. It achieves the world’s second-highest average score among countries with ten or more ranked universities, behind only Saudi Arabia – underscoring the global appeal of UK higher education institutions and their ability to attract a diverse student body. 

The US continues to boast one of the world’s most renowned higher education systems for their reputation, according to employers and academics – this is clear in the ranking as four of the top ten universities, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Harvard University, Stanford University and University of California, Berkeley (UCB) earn 100 in the ‘Academic reputation’ indicator. 

Canada  

Canadian universities are performing exceptionally in ‘Sustainability’, with two universities among the world’s top five, including the world’s most sustainable institution, the University of Toronto . 

Australia  

Three Australian institutions are in the world’s top 20 – with the University of Melbourne and the University of Sydney each climbing one position to 13th and 18th respectively. Australia also dominates in ‘International research’ in the Asia-Pacific region, claiming nine of the top 10 positions. 

Africa  

South Africa holds the African continent’s top four positions in the rankings – with the University of Cape Town (ranked 171st) being the continent’s highest-ranked institution, an improvement of two places from the previous year. Cairo University (Egypt) completed the top five in Africa, ranking 350th globally. 

Latin America  

Latin America has four representatives in the top 100, one from each of its four largest economies: Universidad de Buenos Aires (UBA) in Argentina (71st); Universidade de São Paulo in Brazil (92nd); Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile (UC) in Chile (93rd); and Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) in Mexico (94th).

Design student turns passion into a prize-winning fashion line

Thanks to her success in combining a passion for fashion with industrial design expertise, graduate student Uzoma Ndulue recently emerged as one of the three large-prize winners at the biannual Demo Day, hosted by ASU’s Venture Devils.

Out of 73 ambitious ventures pitched to more than 300 in-person and virtual attendees, the industrial design graduate student won $25,000 to continue funding her fashion line, “ Good Road Collection ."  

“With this money, I’ll be able to be more strategic with my sales approach and reach a wider audience,” Ndulue says.

Here, she talks about the connection between industrial design and fashion and how she incorporated her fashion line into her studies, and gives advice to those looking to participate in competitions like Demo Day. 

Question: How did you first become interested in industrial design?

Answer: Education has always been a top priority in my family, so I knew I would eventually pursue a master's degree. However, I needed to choose a field that would not only align with my passions but also provide practical skills for the corporate world. So I came upon design and the different ways you could use it. 

I was initially unfamiliar with industrial design, so I applied to the architecture program instead. Right before starting the program, I came across an interview with a shoe designer, who mentioned studying industrial design. It immediately caught my attention. I researched what industrial design was, and it clicked — this is exactly what I wanted to do. I switched to the industrial design program, and everything started to make sense. 

Q: How do industrial design and fashion connect?

A: My understanding of industrial design is that it’s anything that can be used for commercial use, which covers the design of all products. Industrial design is not fashion design, per se. But the skills you learn from the industrial design process — from ideation to conception, researching and prototyping — are useful skills you can apply to anything. 

... My studio project this semester focused on fashion. This project got my professor and I thinking about broadening the industrial design program to have a different curriculum — one that's more open to people's industry desires, like fashion or marketing. The idea is to take what you learn about industrial design and apply it to the specific industry you want to go into. 

Using that industrial design approach for fashion has given me strength, and in some ways a slight advantage. Now I am using an industrial design perspective and designing things centered around what people need and being intentional from the start. At the end of the day, both of these fields are all about creativity and bringing ideas to life from your imagination. 

Q: How did you hear about Demo Day?

A: At the beginning of the semester I learned about Venture Devils during a welcome event for industrial designers organized by our program head, Luis Angarita . Angarita worked with Venture Devils representatives to give a presentation explaining what Venture Devils is all about, who was applicable (all students, faculty, alumni and staff are eligible), the dates to apply and encouraging everyone to participate. 

I was unsure about applying since I’d already started my fashion brand before coming to school and I’m an international student. Being an international student, sometimes certain opportunities are not be open to me. Before going through the application process, I wanted to be sure my work would be accepted. So I reached out to the two representatives who came before and asked them my questions, showing them my fashion brand as well. They reassured me that international students could apply and encouraged me to go ahead with my application.

The entire application process took around a month. Throughout this time, I received immense support from Angarita, Craig Hedges , John Takamura and others. They guided me through every step, answering any questions I had and providing all the support they could.

Q: What inspired you to do a fashion line?

A: I had never thought about making clothes; I just enjoyed traditional art, like painting, as a hobby. However, after graduating with my undergraduate degree, I wanted to lean into the creative industry more. I'm not entirely sure how or why, but the idea of blending my traditional art with fashion suddenly captivated me. I had this recurring vision of people wearing fabrics and clothing with my designs on them.

When I returned home to Nigeria, knowing I'd be there for at least a year, I thought to myself, why not just go for it and start this process? It felt very risky doing this because I’m someone who likes to do things well. Before starting, I shifted my mindset to view this as an experiment, thinking let's see what happens. I created a few samples, found a manufacturer, and before I knew it — mass production was underway! I collaborated with a tailor to sew my fabric into actual garments, and just like that, my designs were out in the world.

Q: What are your plans for the prize money?

A: The plan is to use the prize money to start producing my second collection. I've already finalized the designs and received the samples, but I've been holding off on manufacturing due to a lack of funds. But now, after receiving the funding, I'm ready to start the process.

A portion of the money will go towards increasing inventory for my first collection as well. The rest will go towards marketing efforts. I'm planning to really push the brand's presence on digital platforms. Before this win, my sales were primarily through in-person events or exhibitions. 

Q: What would you say to other design students who aren’t sure they should enter competitions like Demo Day?

A:  One of the main lessons I’ve learned from this last academic year is that whatever is in your chest, whatever keeps popping up in your mind, you owe it to yourself to try it at least once. We often hold ourselves back from trying new things out of fear of failure. But you have to be willing to step out of your comfort zone and embrace not having all the answers.

When I first started my fashion line, I had zero knowledge of the fashion industry. It’s only now that things are slowly starting to come together for me. I took the skills I knew I had and collaborated with others who had expertise in the areas where I needed help. The key is to just go for it, and do what you need to do. It’s ok if you fail; at least you did something.
